Description of SimSafari

Yet another entry in Maxis' popular "Sim..." series, SimSafari is a fun game for kids that let you build your own park and camp area, populating them with animals of your choice.

As befits a game designed primarily for kids, SimSafari is very easy. You basically just click on what you want to buy (buildings, animals, plants, cars, and so on) from pop-up menus, then click the location you want to place it. That's all there is to the game, and similar to SimTown this is more of a "toy" than a real game.

Since you start the game with far too much money than you'll ever need and everything is very cheap, there is never a danger of running out of money, which is the only way to 'lose' in this game. In the rare case that you are not sure what to do next, you need to just click on the "advice" button to let the game tell you exactly what to do.

On the upside, the graphics are very nice - you can even tell apart the different plant species, and notice little realistic details such as sunshine reflecting off car's roofs. And young kids in your house will probably like building their own safari and seeing the animals run around and interact with the environment (as well as spectators).

Recommended only for very young gamers in the house. For a real strategy game about running zoos, check out recent titles like Seaworld Tycoon instead.

When I click on an animal, it shows the correct name, correct description, but will always display a picture of the same lizard.

Thank you so much Matt! Was able to install with my Windows 11 Home. I played this game at my computer class and didn't even know how to play and read all those English subtitles lmao but now I'm 26 and finally be able to enjoy this game perfectly!

my brain just decided to randomly resurface some old memories of playing on my daycare's blocky, slow computer when i was about nine. there was a sims town, sims ants, ms paint- but my favorite by far was this game. i spent hours looking up "old sims park game" "old sims zoo game" and, after seeing the graphics for SimSafari, I knew this was definitely it. my family was deep in poverty at when i was that age. we could barely afford to eat, nonetheless own video game consoles. this is probably the game that sparked my love for building games :)

iCarly 2022-01-10 0 point

if you download the "rip" version, extract it directly on the c drive, so that it's just a single folder "smsafari". It should work then. To install elsewhere, just change the directory listed in smsafari.ini to match where you are storing the file.

I followed the instructions Matt left about Mounting the ISO. I did that and found the ENSETUP folder and nothing happens :/ Please advice

If you download the game as zip you need to edit the ini file and change the file paths there to the correct ones

matt 2019-06-06 15 points

I did this to install on Windows 10 successfully: 1) Download the ISO version. 2) Mount the ISO. Look this up on google if you don't know how to do this. 3) Navigate to the SETUP folder on the mounted DVD image. 4) Install using ENSETUP.EXE Try that and you should be set.

I really like simsafari, unfortunately I can't install this on my computer. I think something is wrong with the files on this website. None of the versions worked.

Cyn 2018-09-18 21 points

I obsessed over this game when I was a kid. I could get a 5 star park in like 15 minutes. A decade later, I got a job driving the safari truck at Disney World and my trainer was in shock that I knew every animal already, including the kudus and guineafowl. It was a proud day. lol

Dogo 2018-05-31 0 point

I remember this game from back when I was a kid. Like the reviewer commented, it is like SimTown and the other games from the Sim like aimed to younger audiences. It is a mix between a toy and an educational game, teaching a little about biodiversity and balance, like migratory events (as in: in dry seasons the animals leave to look for food, or if it is an overabundance of food and no predators you'll face a populational explosion of a certain species). Not challenging, but it can be fun for kids.

Windows 11, game just closes every time I press Play, weirdly enough Support still works though

On Windows 11, even compatibility mode can’t get this to work. Ah well.

Go to the Setup folder and click on ENSETUP.EXE, it installs fine (I’m on Windows 8, by the way).

I just did this with windows 11, worked perfectly. No emulation modes required.

This game doesn’t seem to work on Windows 10, even on compatability mode. Trying to install it results in a dialogue box that says the program is unable to run on 64-bit system Windows.

My guess is you have to run it through a “Virtual box” similating it’s an older version of Windows.

SimSafari is a construction and management simulation game created by Maxis in which the player must manage an African safari park. It was first released on March 15, 1998.

  • 3 The Tourist Ground
  • 4 The Village

Overview [ ]

The Game was divided into three different zones, the nature park, the tourist grounds and the African village. The ultimate aim was for your park to reach five stars. To do this the player had to make sure each zone was being run properly. The game was very similar both in graphics and game play to SimPark except it allowed you access to controlling tourism and staff and it was set in Africa. The game had a paragraph of information on every species in it and scenarios including one where the park is overrun by rabbits and another where the tourist grounds are burned down. It gained moderate reviews.

The Park [ ]

The park was where you bought animals and made sure they weren't overeaten by each other or being underfed. The most popular animals to have in your park were known as The Big Five, which included elephants, lions, giraffes, cheetahs and zebras You could control the species of animals, grasses, shrubs and trees that were built in the park. Like many Sim games there were also natural disasters in this case: fires, droughts and locusts.

The Tourist Ground [ ]

The Tourist Ground was where tourists stayed. You could build restaurants, hotels, swimming pools, cottages and tents, etc for guests. It was important to have a road leading into the park so tourists could see the animals. The buildings were staffed by workers from the village.

The Village [ ]

The player had the least control over the village because it was up to the computer to decide what to build. In the village you could hire drivers, naturalists, guides, cooks and attendants. The more you hired the better the village did but if you didn't hire staff the village would poach your animals.

A park simulation game released by Maxis in 1998, SimPark allows players to construct and manage a Safari park in Africa. Very similar to the previously released SimPark, but with the added mechanic of controlling the tourism aspect.

Gameplay [ | ]

Unlike SimPark, the game is divided into three different zones, the nature park, the tourist grounds and the African village. The ultimate aim was for the players' park to reach five stars although like most Sims games the player could continue playing indefinitely. To gain five stars the player had to make sure each zone was being run properly. The player can control tourism and staff.

The game had a paragraph of information on every species in it, with short animations for the animals. Scenarios including one where the park is overrun by rabbits and another where the camp is burned down. To contain rabbits, one must place many animals that prey on rabbits, or catch them all in nets. To contain fire, the player must bulldoze around it to keep it from spreading.

It gained moderate reviews. [ citation needed ]

The park was where the player could buy animals and made sure they were not being over-eaten or underfed. The player can control the species of animals, grasses, shrubs and trees that were built here. Natural disasters could happen like fires, droughts, locusts, and twisters.

The Camp, also known as the Tourist Ground, was where tourists stayed. The player can build restaurants, hotels, swimming pools, cottages, tents, etc. for guests. The buildings were staffed by workers hired from the village.

Village [ | ]

The player had the least control over the village because it was up to the AI to decide what to build. In the village the player could hire drivers, naturalists, guides, cooks and attendants to staff your tourist grounds. The more staff was hired, the better the village did and if the player didn't hire staff the village would begin poaching your park's animals. If things went very badly, the village might even stop working for you altogether.

SimSafari allows kids aged eight and up to design their own safari park, importing animals and plants to an area and setting up tourist facilities to accommodate paying guests.

Kids can use advisors to help them and there is a "helpful hints" section in the guide that gives advice on what to do if your animal species are dying with no apparent cause, and more.

The park is rated by stars, from one to five. Can you build a five-star rated Safari park? There is also a quiz section that tests kids' knowledge of animals.

Bland and uninteresting safari sim

Another in the long line of Sim games from Maxis, SimSafari makes for an ideal introduction to the city building series for younger gamers, given its relative simplicity and educational overtones. This one is pretty much identical to SimPark , with the exception that it is set in Africa rather than the US, and requires players to construct and successfully manage a safari park. A variety of buildings and animals are available for budding environmentalists, but watch out for natural disasters that can wipe everything out in a heartbeat. While SimSafari could have been an interesting addition to the series, for most gamers this will be a fairly dull experience. Beyond placing animals and buildings, there is little else to the gameplay, with none of the complexity or options associated with similar games. The difficulty is also set very low so creating the ultimate park is extremely easy, reducing the game's longevity and appeal even further. The 2D graphics are simple and clean, but nothing spectacular, while the interface is straightforward and easy to pick up, aimed at younger audiences as the game is. Ultimately, SimSafari is little more than an amusing but short-lived diversion and quickly becomes tedious due to its lack of depth. While it should be applauded for its educational intent, it's just a shame it couldn't have been a bit more fun to play. Definitely one for younger gamers only.

Sim game for kids

Much like in the game Sim Farm your job here is to build a safari camp and populate it with animals of your choice. The game is primarily fitted for children, since it has extremely easy gameplay. There is nothing to do but to see a property or building that is offered to you, buy it and place it in a spot you arranged for it. Same with the animals. That is all there really is to the game. You also start with a ridiculously high amount of money, so losing is practically not possible. I think this game is more for smaller kids to imagine they are buying animals they would like to have it they really had a safari. So, comparing to other sim games, like SimTower or Sim City , this game is just a walk in the park, a toy for kids. The graphics are high detailed and very good and the animation is superb. The African tribal music is a great addition for the game's safari atmosphere. A great game for kids to have fun and maybe learn something about managing money or differentiating animals and how they sound.

Maxis Simulation Game focusing on making your own African safari, while keeping balance with the neighboring village and a tourist camp.

This game provides examples of:

  • Darkest Africa : the setting of the game
  • Messy Pig : Warthogs
  • Evil Poacher : Averted, if you can't employ the African villagers in your safari camp, the only way they can support themselves is by poaching in your park.
  • Explosive Breeder : Savannah hares and monitor lizards are some of the worst. Fortunately hares are at the bottom of the food chain.
  • King of Beasts : Lions are the top predator in the game, and can send most mammals running away from them. Having too many lions is a bad thing, as you can really upset the balance in your park.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability : Likely that if you have an over-predatoring problem and let all the animals die out, rhinos will be the only things left in their park. They're possibly the only animal that lions are absolutely no threat to.
  • Panthera Awesome : Lions and cheetahs and leopards, oh my.

SimSafari - PC/Mac

Product information, product description.

SimSafari lets you develop a balanced ecosystem by creating a park filled with diverse African plants and animals. Team up with a neighboring village and build a flourishing safari camp. You can place selected animals and plants in your park, as well as modify the terrain with a bulldozer and water tools. But remember, adding water costs money. And keep in mind that animals need food, so make sure grass-eating animals have grasses and shrubs. Carnivores will require other animals to eat for food. It's your job to make sure the delicate balance of nature is maintained.

If your kids wore out SimPark, they'll love this trans-Atlantic promotion to managing the ecosystem of a wildlife park in the African savanna. From the masterful makers of the SimCity series, this problem-solving, nature-and-science game challenges children to weigh and mediate conflicting interests and requirements of wildlife. Choosing to start their own park or try one of the seven missions, kids have to make decisions affecting the nature park, a tourist camp and a native village-from balancing the financial budgets, to balancing bio-systems. Two levels of play take care of different ages of siblings. Accessible behind the fun and games is a databank of detailed information about the plant and animal species on the savanna. One warning: Because of the detailed animation and movements on-screen, the program requires a jungle's worth of hard-drive-about 55 megs. (Don Oldenburg, Parents' Choice®) -- From Parents' Choice®

Ratings and Reviews

It’s all good but not too good.

Can you please add more than four lions I mean like cousins and aunts and uncle’s and more cubs please because they are just adorable and can I actually hunt with them I can only see them when I’m doing quests and it just really bugs me so please fix this and what I’m hunting and I kill something it does not die as in flops on the floorplease make the animals more realistic. I’d like that they’re not a lot of ads but please make a pictures ticket is sold more like the pictures in the game. The only thing that really gets killed is when I’m in a quest and there’s a bull in my habitat other than that I like the terrain and get my lion walk a little faster because I have to run all the time and it really ticks me off so fix all of that and hopefully it improves

Just bad as WildCraft

WildCraft yes and afriCan lion no

Great but would like some improvements

Can we have sex with our mate and have more cubs pls and we would have to hunt and bring the cubs food . Also pls add more animals for us too hunt , other then that great game .

Elephants in Microsoft Flight Simulator

The recreated world in Microsoft Flight Simulator is home to famous landmarks, man-made wonders, and at least a few herds of creatures you can spot from the skies.

The simulator makes it easy to find places like your house if you know the coordinates, but you can also travel effortlessly around the world to spot herds of animals — or as the game refers to them, fauna . These are among the few living entities in Microsoft Flight Simulator . Each group of wild animals are made from handcrafted 3D models that roam about different areas of the world.

In Polygon guide to Microsoft Flight Simulator ’s animals, we’ll show you how to quickly locate and visit all the creatures in the game.

What animals are in the game?

You can find several herds of animals roaming the game world at any given time. Currently, here are the species of creatures you can come across:

  • black bears
  • grizzly bears

Each set of animals is listed in the game as “fauna,” and they have markers on them just like points of interests or airports. To make sure you have them highlighted on the world map, select the Filters options at the bottom of the map screen, and ensure that fauna is set to On .

The fauna filter is enabled on the Microsoft Flight Simulator map screen.

Now that we know fauna are displayed on the world map, let’s find them all.

How to find animals

Locating the creatures scattered across Microsoft Flight Simulator is quite easy. When on the world map, search for “fauna,” and a full list of each herd’s location will be displayed.

Searching for fauna in Microsoft Flight Simulator

From there, click on the batch of animals you’d like to visit, and the map will zoom in on their location. Just like any other destination, you can then choose to arrive or depart from that map marker.

If you choose to set a different departure location from your destination, like we recommend in our Microsoft Flight Simulator beginner’s guide , remember that animals move. So if you choose to fly to where they are located from somewhere else, make sure you have fauna markers turned on under Options > Assistance > Navigation Aids. That way, you’ll be able to spot them as they move across the map.

Highlighting Fauna Markers in Microsoft Flight Simulator’s Assistance menu

Naturally, these creatures move much slower than any aircraft you can pilot, but if you’re trying to stage shots by using the Microsoft Flight Simulator photo mode workaround, just know that they won’t stop for photos. Even if you enable Active Pause, animals will trot along, so be sure to follow them with the Showcase Camera.
