Dealership goes vintage with Western Canada Power Cruise 2023

western power cruise

It was a big day over at Cypress Motors, as some vintage rides took over the parking lot.

The Western Canada Power Cruise 2023 came to Swift Current, stopping off on their parade into the western edge of the province at the local Ford dealership. There, they were welcomed with all 72 of their hotrods and joined by a few local car enthusiasts, with a bbq lunch.

All the proceed from that lunch were going towards Swift Current Ride for Dad, who puts the money towards prostate cancer research.

By the end of the day, they managed to raise a total of $2,240 for the local Ride for Dad branch.

For Randy Voth, the business development manager for Cypress Motors, the team-up with Ride for Dad as these motorheads came to town was perfect.

Randy Voth with Barry Anderson, who organized the Western Canada Power Cruise 2023.

"We wanted to team up with a charity that needs help with things like this," said Voth. "We think [Ride for Dad] is a really big deal, and we're very happy to support them."

Anyone who showed up, be that in the Power Cruise or just from around Swift Current was able to through $10 in the donation bin, and receive a burger, a drink, and some chips. All the food was prepared by members of Swift CUrrent Ride for Dad.

The cars that managed to make it out for the day ranged from the rare and the pristine, to the common and tricked out. Folks drove in in things as old as 1920's Chevrolets, to things as new as 2023 Mustang convertibles.

Some were even coming in on trailers, towed by classic trucks and semis. Even the highway had a few classic trucks go by on the flat deck of a truck, purely coincidently.

Making out to show some local support for the massive motorcade of classics was car clubs like the Eliminators, the Rogue Cruisers, and the Excellerators.

For a few hours, the most common year for a vehicle in the dealership may have been the mid-50s through to the mid-70s. Rather fitting, as the event arrived just as Cypress Motors was in the midst of their used car sale for the summer.

"We really want to support the community of southwest Saskatchewan," said Voth. "We have a program called 'Partners in your Community', where for every vehicle that is sold from our dealership, new or used, we donate $300 to the buyer's charity of choice for their town or here in the city."

In total, by the end of the event, 80 or so classic cars made it out for the show. Ride for Dad was presented with the donation after everyone had headed out on the highway and the cleanup had been completed. In a little over three hours, thousands of dollars in contributions were raised in the fight against prostate cancer.

Thru the Windshield: The "Western Canada Power Cruise"

Words: Roger A. Jetter

Photos: Roger Jetter and Dan Jetter

Wow, what a trip! My brother, Dan, and I did three car events in two weeks and three days; we also saw a lot of magnificent western U.S. countryside through the windshield of our Cadillacs as we drove the Trans-Canada Highway One with a bunch of Canadian rodders. Oh, and we put 4,552 trouble-free miles on our Cadillacs—my ’55 Coupe DeVille (Lavender) and my brother’s green ‘n flamed ’54 Cadillac.

western power cruise

Here’s the story - last November we read a short letter about the “Western Canada Power Cruise” in Rod & Custom Magazine. The letter was signed by the organizer, Chris McMillan, and eventually I found Chris and we started e-mailing back and forth about the Cruise. My brother and I thought it would be fun to join a bunch of Canadians on a cross-country tour, and we liked driving and sight-seeing, especially to somewhere we’d never been. We registered for the event and decided to meet the tour in Regina, Saskatchewan, on July 22, two days drive from our home in Denver, Colorado.

The five-day tour across Canada would begin in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and would terminate at the GoodGuy’s Puyallup, Washington, event on Friday, July 27, 2013.

The ‘WCPC Tour’ started with about half dozen rodders some 1336 miles east of Puyallup, Washington, and ‘picked up’ rodders along the way in each city or overnight stop. The first overnight, Monday, July 22, was Regina, 301 miles from Winnipeg. Of course, the whole tour was planned to stay on Trans-Canada Highway One, the major highway all the way across Canada.

Dan and I crossed the US/Canada border at Raymond, Montana, and were astounded at how flat Saskatchewan is. I thought Kansas was flat but it’s nothing compared to Saskatchewan, and most of that province is colored with yellow Canola fields.

Monday night, The Majestics Car Club hosted a hot dog roast for us. The rain shower early that evening certainly didn’t stop the camaraderie as we enjoyed plenty to eat and drink, then toured the clubhouse and the various members’ projects.

Dan and I took several side trips after Calgary, among them to Lake Louise, the Chateau Hotel and the glaciers there. The lake is a gorgeous shade of emerald green, there was still a lot of snow pack in the mountains surrounding the lake.

For those of us living in Colorado, it’s hard to imagine driving mountain roads for three full days, yet that’s exactly what we did. From Calgary, it was mountain driving all the way to the coast - up, down and around curves, if there were long straight stretches of road in those mountains, I don’t remember them.

We arrived late afternoon Wednesday in Golden, BC, a small town tucked into the corner of Yoho National Park. Crossing the border into BC made the third Province we’d driven through. Several Calgary rodders had joined in Calgary but we didn’t get to meet them until we got to the motel in Golden. Event organizer Chris had arranged a cruise-in at the local A & W drive-in and we ‘paraded’ thru the downtown area to end up at the Rec Center for a photo shoot session.

Thursday’s “cruise” was 271 miles to Merritt, BC, with a lunch stop in Salmon Arm at Boston’s Pizza—a strange name for a town in Canada but we found out the town is on Shuswap Lake, a huge narrow valley lake over 115 miles in length. The town of Salmon Arm is the eastern ‘arm’ of the three-armed lake. The local A & W in Merritt hosted a cruise-in that night but we didn’t get to that as we were preparing for the door prize giveaway Dan had hauled up from Denver (he got better mileage with his stock 331” engine so he was elected to carry the heavier stuff). We also had a plaque to give to the “Coo-oo-lest WCPC Cruiser “on the tour and that was awarded to Rob Shuba, his wife, Brenda, and their ’53 Chevy. All totaled, 73 cruisers made the trip and several more joined in for day-long runs between stops.

The Merritt to Puyallup, Washington, trip was the final cruise on Friday—276 miles—and most of the cruisers were going to the drags in Kent, Washington that night so most of them weren’t in a hurry. Dan and I left Merritt at 6 a.m. because we wanted to be at the Goodguy’s event by noon. We still had mountain driving and a wait at the U.S. border ahead of us, and that delayed us so much that we didn’t get to the Puyallup Fairgrounds until 2:00 that afternoon.

The Goodguy’s event itself was great—the fairgrounds were huge and had plenty of cruising lanes. I understand there were over 2800 cars registered. Both Dan and I entered the “You Gotta Drive ‘Em” section (sponsored by GoodYear), because that’s exactly what we did: 2084 one way miles from Denver to Puyallup! I was lucky enough to get win that pick, along the perfect prize - four brand new GoodYear tires!

Sunday evening after the event was for relaxing. However, we weren’t ready to head home for Denver just yet. We decided to tour Mt. St. Helens, visit Astoria, Oregon and the coast and stop in Portland to see the famous B-17 Bomber Restaurant. Then perhaps take old Highway 30 for a tour of the Columbia River Gorge.

At the Puyallup event, we decided to find another rod run to attend on our way home. We’d heard there was the 43rd Annual Yellowstone Rod Run in West Yellowstone so we set our sights on Wyoming and Montana. After the Columbia River Gorge tour, we crossed Oregon and Idaho and arrived in Yellowstone Thursday evening. On Friday morning we did a tour of Yellowstone Park and the “Old Faithful” geyser and spent Friday and Saturday in the town of West Yellowstone. On Sunday, we headed for the Beartooth Mountains and the amazing Beartooth Highway (elevation 10,947 feet) ending that ‘side trip’ in Red Lodge, Montana. From there we headed south and spent the night in Worland, Wyoming. On Monday morning, we stopped in Thermopolis to see the hot springs there and then drove along the Big Horn River and through Wind River Canyon. For the first time in the two week trip, the weather turned really hot and we still had about 500 miles to go to get home. That evening, about 7 p.m., we pulled into our driveway, home tired but safe and sound. Mileage traveled: 4,552. Time away from home: 2 weeks, three days. Gorgeous sights of the western United States: Fantastic. Driving thru the Canadian Rockies: Seemingly endless. Cadillac trouble: Absolutely none…and it doesn’t get any better than that!

Geraldton businesses at wits end after second Western Power blackout in one week

Geraldton power outage

Thousands of homes and businesses in Western Australia's Midwest have gone without power today for the second time in four days.

Key points:

  • Some 24,000 Midwest homes and businesses were impacted by a power outage Friday morning
  • A local chamber of commerce head said businesses were increasingly frustrated
  • A local tourism director said there were still plenty of activities for cruise ship visitors

Power to about 24,000 customers in Geraldton was cut off for about seven hours from 3:30am Friday morning, with about the same number of customers hit with a six-hour blackout on Tuesday .

Western Power chief executive Sam Barbaro said a generator fault, rather than network damage, was to blame for the outages.

"We were doing some planned maintenance on our network, and were running generators to back-up the network outage," he said.

He said the generator tripped on Tuesday because of a "fault on a private wind farm", while Friday morning "there was a generator issue".

"We've recalled the transmission line now so that it can supply the town," Mr Barbaro said.

Businesses fed up

Midwest Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Joanne Fabling said businesses were fed up.

"They are frustrated and angry, as they well should be," she said.

"It's the second major outage inside of a week … and it just goes to show the frailty and the end-of-age of our infrastructure system."

A strip of shops on an otherwise empty street

Today's outage coincided with the arrival of thousands of visitors to Geraldton aboard the Coral Princess cruise.

Ms Fabling said the outage reflected poorly on the city.

"A lot of businesses and organisations put a lot of effort into receiving the cruise ships because it means a huge economic boost into our retail sector," she said.

"So it's really disappointing that once again we're experiencing this outage because you have to stand staff down and there is the lost productivity hours.

"You talk with people and businesses in Dongara and they're having three to four-hour outages a day. You cannot conduct business in an environment like that."

A port city, as photographed from the distance and across a bay

Visitor options without power

Tourism Geraldton Midwest member director Joanne Brown said the biggest impact caused by the outage was communication between the Coral Princess and the city.

A large cruise ship docked at a port

"The communication that we're getting from passengers is that the ship is announcing that there are power outages," she said.

"So passengers are reluctant to come off because they think everything's going to be closed and there's going to be nothing here for them to do.

"The HMAS Sydney Memorial doesn't need power, the cathedral does not need power, the meet-and-greeters welcoming them as they get off the port shuttles don't need power.

"There's just so many other things that people can do that there's absolutely no reason for them to stay on the ship."

Ms Brown said it was too early to measure any impact of the power outage because the number of passengers disembarking in Geraldton would not be known until the end of the day.

"[The power outage is] unfortunately one of those things and I guess we just have to smile to these passengers that are coming off."

Outages constraining businesses

Ms Fabling said a long-term plan for the future of the network was needed because the system was aged and at the "end of life".

"We've also got constraints on the system and we have businesses that are told that they cannot grow their business because they're at the peak of their power requirements," she said.

"They're having to buy the business next door just to keep continuing to expand their business."

Ms Fabling said she was asked why the businesses didn't have generators.

"But why does it cost more to do business in the regions? Why do we have to have this extra infrastructure?" she said.

"We pay our taxes like everybody else and we have the right to be able to have the same kind of power reliability as our metros."

These 3 lesser-known cruise lines offer amazing voyages on sail-powered ships

There is nothing quite as magical — or romantic — as a cruise on a sailing ship.

To stand on the deck of a vessel topped with dozens of billowing sails, propelled through the waves by the power of the wind alone, is to go back in time to an earlier age of travel, when crossing the world's oceans was as adventurous as it was challenging.

It's an experience that's all about the feeling of the wind in your hair, the lean of the vessel (known as the heel) as it's pushed by the wind and the sway from the waves (which is actually smoother than what you get on a motor ship).

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

In contrast to what you'll find on so many motor-powered ships, cruising on a masted ship is about the simple thrill of traveling across the sea and not about all the many attractions you'll find on board.

Only a handful of small cruise brands — so small that you might never have heard of them — offer trips on sailing ships. Here, we look at the three biggest players in this niche subset of the cruise industry.

Sea Cloud Cruises

If it's an authentic, old-style sailing experience you want, then Sea Cloud Cruises is the line for you. The Germany-based company operates three large sailing ships where the sails are unfurled by hand, just as they were on sailing ships centuries ago.

On the biggest of these three vessels, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit , 18 deckhands scurry high into the rigging on sea days to manually untie and prepare the sails, an amazing sight. Unveiled in 2021 , it's a full-rigged, three-masted sailing ship of the sort that hasn't been common on the world's oceans for more than a century.

Sea Cloud Cruises' two other vessels — Sea Cloud 2 and Sea Cloud — are smaller but offer a similar show as the sails are set by hand the old-fashioned way. The former is a 23-year-old, three-masted barque propelled by 23 sails (five fewer than Sea Cloud Spirit); the latter is a 93-year-old, four-masted barque with 30 sails and a storied past.

Now configured to carry 64 paying passengers, Sea Cloud was originally the private yacht of Postum Cereals heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and her husband, the famed financier E. F. Hutton. At the time, the vessel was the largest private yacht in the world. It later served the U.S. Navy as a weather ship during World War II, after which it became the presidential yacht for the Dominican Republic. It only began sailing as a cruise vessel in the 1980s.

If you have money to spare, you can still book Post's opulent private quarters on Sea Cloud, now its owner's suite. It'll set you back around $5,000 per day per couple. Her husband's slightly smaller quarters are also available to book at a similar rate.

Post, the wealthiest woman in the U.S. during her lifetime, notably also built Mar-a-Lago, the massive estate in Florida that is now the official residence of Donald Trump.

Sea Cloud Cruises is the most all-inclusive and upscale of the three brands listed in this story, with pricing to match. Expect to pay nearly $1,000 per person per day or more for many sailings.

Sea Cloud Cruises' three vessels offer a diverse array of sailings in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Canary Islands and Morocco, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

Windstar Cruises

Founded in the 1980s, Windstar Cruises got its start as a sailing ship line. While it now operates traditional motor-powered ships, too, voyages on sailing ships are still a big part of its business.

Three of the Seattle-based brand's six vessels — Wind Spirit, Wind Star and Wind Surf — are sailing vessels, and they all offer a similar yacht-like, small-ship experience.

Two of the three vessels (Wind Spirit and Wind Star) are particularly intimate, measuring 5,407 tons and carrying just 148 passengers with every berth full.

Related: The 2 types of Windstar ships, explained

The line's third sailing vessel, Wind Surf, is nearly three times the size at 14,745 tons. It's one of the biggest sailing ships in the world (only a sister vessel that sails for Club Med is bigger). Wind Surf carries 342 people, an enormous number for a sailing ship.

Unlike on the vessels operated by Sea Cloud, the sails on Windstar's sailing ships aren't unfurled by hand in the old-fashioned way but by the push of a button from the bridge. It's a fully automated system that is much more modern, if less dramatic.

Still, the experience of slicing through the waves by the power of the wind alone on Windstar ships is as glorious and romantic as it is on the Sea Cloud ships.

Windstar Cruises is less all-inclusive and pricey than Sea Cloud but still offers a relatively upscale experience. Its dining program is done in partnership with the food-focused James Beard Foundation, which also brings James Beard Award-winning chefs to the ships regularly for food-themed itineraries.

For an extra $89 per person per day, passengers can also make the experience more all-inclusive with included Wi-Fi, unlimited beer, wine and cocktails, and gratuities (three things that aren't included in regular fares).

The line's three vessels typically spend nearly all of their time sailing in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

Star Clippers

Like Sea Cloud and Windstar, Star Clippers operates three sailing vessels that are among the biggest and most elegant sailing vessels in the world.

The belle of the ball at the line is Royal Clipper, a stunning five-masted ship that is billed as the largest square-rigged ship in the world. Its enormous array of 42 sails has a sail area of 56,000 square feet — significantly more than the sails atop any of the Sea Cloud or Windstar vessels. (Only Sea Cloud Spirit comes relatively close with a sail area of 44,100 square feet spread across 28 sails.)

Built to resemble Preussen, a legendary tall ship of the 19th century, the 24-year-old Royal Clipper shares the spotlight at Star Clippers with two smaller sister vessels, Star Flyer and Star Clipper.

Carrying 166 passengers apiece, the smaller vessels were designed to resemble the speedy clipper ships of the 19th century, which were known for their narrow profile and large sail area. Each vessel has a sail area of 36,000 square feet spread across 16 sails, a large amount for the size.

When it comes to the setting of sails, Star Clippers vessels offer a level of old-style authenticity that is in between the ships of Sea Cloud and Windstar. Like on Sea Cloud vessels, the sails are pulled into position by a team of deckhands using hand power and winches to tighten the "sheets," or ropes.

Unlike on Sea Cloud vessels, the deck hands don't climb high into the rigging to untie and prepare the sails for winching. That part is done automatically at the push of a button from the bridge, as it is on Windstar vessels.

In one key difference, though, Star Clippers lets passengers harness up and climb into the crow's nest of its vessels — a thrilling experience. Just be prepared for your knees to go a bit wobbly as you get to the top; it's way up there.

Star Clippers sailings are the most affordable option among the three sailing brands, in part because the onboard experience is less all-inclusive and upscale.

The three Star Clippers vessels mostly operate sailings in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and along the west coast of Central America.

Bottom line

It's still possible to get a taste of what traveling the world's oceans was like in the days before motor power. Three small cruise companies — Sea Cloud Cruises, Windstar Cruises and Star Clippers — offer voyages on large sailing ships that are as majestic as anything that has sailed the seas in centuries past.

How do Russia's Kh-69 missiles measure up against the West's best?

The recent attack on Trypillia Thermal Power Plant, resulting in its complete destruction, is believed to have been executed using Russia's latest cruise missile , the Kh-69, which shares similarities with Western missiles like the Storm Shadow/SCALP and Taurus.

"This weapon, originally developed for Su-57 (newest Russian jet fighter), is far more advanced than most Russian air-launched tactical munitions," The War Zone reported in February 2024.

NV delves into the specifications and potential threats posed by the Kh-69 missiles.

The Kh-69: Russia's answer to Western missiles

Developed by Raduga, a Moscow-based design bureau specializing in cruise missiles and now facing Western sanctions, the Kh-69 emerged as one of Russia's recent innovations. It was publicly unveiled at the Army-2022 military forum and later showcased at the Dubai Airshow 2023. Russia lauds the Kh-69 as a multi-functional, stealthy, and precise next-gen air defense missile.

However, external experts note that the Kh-69 likely evolved from the earlier Kh-59MK2 missile. Significant redesigns post-2015 have given the Kh-69 distinctive features such as a square cross-section body, retractable wings, four tail fins, and an internal turbojet engine, aligning it more closely with the German Taurus missiles.

Despite these advancements, its guidance system, relying on inertial navigation with GLONASS corrections and an optoelectronic homing mechanism, remains largely unchanged from its predecessor, drawing parallels with Russia's strategic Kh-101/X-555 missiles.

As of September 2023, the Kh-69 was undergoing flight tests, and experts from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) noted its resemblance to the Storm Shadow and Taurus missiles, albeit with a smaller size and payload.

The War Zone experts confirm that even before their use in Ukraine, Russian Kh-69s were indeed compared to Storm Shadow and its French equivalent SCALP in terms of their hypothetical capabilities. However, these western missiles have a longer range and are also larger in size: in terms of length and payload, the Kh-69 is about two-thirds the size of the Storm Shadow/SCALP.

Capabilities and deployment

Unconfirmed characteristics of the Kh-69 missile include:

guidance accuracy - maximum deviation of up to 16 feet

flight range - previously stated to be up to 180 miles (however, specialists of Ukrainian website Defence Express received additional information, according to which range of missile launched at Kyiv Oblast on April 11 was actually 250 miles)

missile weight - 1500 lbs

speed - from 195 to 277 mph (i.e., missile is subsonic)

fuselage length - 13.74 feet

width and height with folded wings and plumage - 15.78 inches

wingspan - 6.56 feet

payload - 660-680 lbs

Inventory and impact

The Kh-69 missile, designed specifically for Russia's cutting-edge Su-57 fighter jets, represents a significant advancement in Moscow's military arsenal. While the Su-57s have seen limited action in Ukraine due to their high costs and scarce numbers, the adaptability of the Kh-69 missiles to be fitted onto more commonly used fourth-generation Russian aircraft like the Su-35 and Su-34 poses a growing concern for Ukrainian defenses.

According to missile developers, the Kh-69's unique square body design allows it to be equipped not only on the advanced Su-57s but also on a range of fourth-generation fighter jets widely deployed in the ongoing conflict. This versatility means that Russian forces could potentially increase the use of these sophisticated missiles, leveraging the broader fleet of Su-34 and Su-35 bombers already active near the frontline.

Defense experts from Defence Express highlight the strategic implications of this capability, noting that the potential for a wider deployment of Kh-69 missiles could significantly amplify the threat to Ukraine. Especially concerning is the missile's reported range of 250 miles, which, if accurate, would enable Russian forces to strike deep into Ukrainian territory, including key locations like Kyiv, from relatively safe distances.

Despite the looming threat, the extent of Russia's Kh-69 arsenal remains a question. Industry analysts suggest that Russia hasn't reached full-scale production of these missiles, indicating that large stockpiles are unlikely at this point. A missile analyzed in February 2024 bore manufacturing marks from the end of 2023, hinting at the nascent stage of the Kh-69's production lifecycle.

Russian missile strike in Kharkiv Oblast cuts power for 200,000

At the same time, if the missile's range of 250 miles is confirmed, this is a sufficient radius to hit a significant number of targets on the territory of Ukraine (including Kyiv) from tactical aircraft, i.e. the same Su-34 or Su-35, which can approach borders or front lines, analysts explain.

Below is the estimated radius of the Kh-69 strike range on a graphic from Defense Express.

How many such missiles does Russia have?

While analysts indicate that Russia has not yet ramped up to full-scale mass production of the Kh-69 missiles, with limited stockpiles available, the capabilities and potential targets of these missiles are drawing significant attention. According to Defence Express, a missile analyzed in February 2024 was manufactured at the end of 2023, suggesting recent production.

What targets can Kh-69 hit?

The Kh-69 is engineered to strike stationary targets with precise coordinates, capable of being pre-programmed or loaded mid-flight. The War Zone outlines that these missiles are particularly aimed at hitting critical infrastructures and military assets with known locations. This strategic approach was underscored when the Trypillia thermal power plant in Kyiv Oblast became a target, showcasing the missile's potential in hitting vital Ukrainian facilities.

Russian sources have touted the Kh-69's ability to target a range of stationary objectives, including communication nodes, transport hubs, ammunition depots, command centers, industrial facilities, power plants, and even docked ships, painting a broad canvas of potential targets within its strike capability.

Can Ukraine down this missiles?

However, Ukraine's resilience against such advanced weaponry is noteworthy. The first known use of Kh-69 missiles against Ukraine on February 7 led to significant analysis, with Ukrainian forces reportedly downing five out of six guided missiles (Kh-59 and Kh-69) launched over Poltava, Sumy, and Mykolaiv regions. These successful interceptions were later verified by experts from the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise, marking a crucial milestone in understanding and countering this new threat.

As for possibility of shooting down Kh-69 and their analogues aka Kh-59MK2 missiles, Defence Express experts have previously reminded that this is a difficult air target for Ukrainian air defense, as it is quite small in size. In particular, such missiles are even smaller than wings of the Kh-101 missile (13.77 feet for the Kh-59MK2 / Kh-69 and 23 feet for Kh-101, respectively).

"This circumstance significantly complicates downing of Kh-59 cruise missiles, so each defeat of such an air target is an outstanding result of Ukrainian air defense forces," analysts said.

And after Kh-69 strike on the Trypillia Thermal Power Plant on April 11, they added that this result "unfortunately indicates possibility of its penetration of depleted Ukrainian air defense."

After April 11 attack, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Ilya Yevlash called Kh-69 missile an "improved version of the Kh-59". According to him, it is currently being established what kind of missile it was and its type.

Yevlash suggested that Western air defense systems are capable of shooting down such missiles.

"Russia used similar missiles before," Yevlash said.

"These are fresh missiles with parts manufactured in 2023. So we can see that Russia is constantly trying to produce new missiles. However, it all depends on success of their production, how quickly they can provide themselves with various semiconductors, chips, etc."

"Of course, the Kh-69 missile is a new missile for us, so we are also studying how we can counter it. Most likely, Patriot air defense system will also be able to counter it, as it has fought against quite more sophisticated types of missiles, such as hypersonic ones,  Zircon and Kinzhal," Yevlash added.

Swing ride 160 feet above the water coming to MSC Cruises' new ship in 2025

western power cruise

MSC Cruises’ new ship will have a swing set on board – but not the kind you’d find on a playground.

Cliffhanger, a new ride launching on forthcoming U.S. flagship MSC World America next year, will allow guests to swing out over the ocean 160 feet above the water, the cruise line revealed Tuesday. The four-seat ride uses mechanical arms to lift guests beyond the 22-deck ship’s edge, where they are propelled back and forth.

The line is billing the attraction as the only over-water swing ride at sea. MSC Cruises USA President Rubén A. Rodríguez said Cliffhanger is a “natural next step,” following attractions on its other ships like Seascape’s Robotron .

“It’s the first time we’re taking thrill-seekers out past the deck and over the water, and we know they’ll love it,” he told USA TODAY in an email. There will be an added charge for the ride, but pricing details were not yet available.

Cliffhanger will be part of Family Aventura, one of seven districts on the 2,614-stateroom ship. The area also features The Harbor, an outdoor park area with a high ropes course, a playground inspired by the lighthouse at the line’s private Bahamas destination Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and more.

Other districts on the ship include Galleria, home to dining venues, shopping and games “at the heart of the ship,” and Zen Area, an adults-only zone at the vessel’s stern where guests can enjoy music, catch some sun and take a dip in twin pools, according to an earlier news release .

Short vs. long cruises: Which one is right for you?

World America will debut in April 2025 and spend its inaugural season sailing Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Miami.

The 8-day Alaska’s Western Passages cruise travels through canyons and fjords, stopping at beautiful anchorages at Admiralty, Baranof, and Kupreanof islands. Cruise between Sitka and Juneau to take in a unique experience of Alaska’s wild coast aboard the historic 8-guest adventure yacht Westward. The Westward , purpose-built as an Alaskan charter vessel, is now registered as a Historic Place by the National Park Service. This intimate small ship cruise is a remarkable way to experience the beauty of Alaska as it explores the most remote wilderness areas for up-close wildlife encounters and enriching cultural experiences.

Alaska’s glacial wilderness supports a diversity of wildlife as varied as the landscape, with a likelihood of sighting humpback whales, orca, porpoise, stellar sea lions, black bears, brown bears and mountain goats. Enjoy a dip in the Baranof Hot Springs, explore an enchanted canyon, paddle through tidal rapids, experience John Muir’s “sea flooded Yosemite Valley,” and learn bear etiquette, tracking and more. All trips will feature several walks and chances to kayak in remote and protected bays. These amazing nature and wildlife opportunities qualify this itinerary for our handpicked selection of  Alaska family cruises . The Alaska’s Western Passages itinerary cruises between Sitka and Juneau, Alaska; offering a main eastbound route and a reverse westbound route. The Westward also offers several alternative routes, including an 8-day itinerary between Petersburg and Sitka. The Westward ultimately follows a unique route each trip, allowing the weather and wildlife to dictate her itinerary, which makes her luxury Alaska cruises all the more special. Westward’s flexibility and small size make her an AdventureSmith favorite for private  Alaska yacht charters , ideal for those wanting to experience Alaska with their own group.

Southeast Alaska's Western Passages Itinerary

The 8-day Alaska’s Western Passages cruise begins in Sitka, Alaska, travels eastbound while exploring the islands and ends in Juneau, Alaska.

Route map of main & reverse Alaska's Western Passages small ship cruise, operating from Sitka to Juneau, with visits to Stephens Passage; Warm Springs Bay; Freshwater Bay; Baird, Le Conte and Dawes Glaciers; Hidden Falls Hatchery and Tenakee Springs.

Westward will be moored in Sitka Harbor, where you will meet the ship at noon. Sitka was first settled by Tlingit ancestors about 10,000 years ago, and later by Russian fur traders in 1799. There are several historic sites of significance here. Take the time to visit a few of them during a walk through the town on your own if time allows. Board Westward in time for a late lunch and to cast off for the 9-mile run to Krestof Sound, where Westward will anchor in time for a first kayak paddle before dinner.

lunch, dinner

Westward will travel through canyons and fjords, stopping at beautiful anchorages at Admiralty, Baranof and Kupreanof islands, observing bears, whales, eagles and more along the way. Enjoy opportunities to hike or kayak, accompanied by the onboard naturalist, and learn about the fauna and flora of the area. Each departure varies depending on the weather; some highlights may include:

Stephens Passage

As Westward sails through waters frequented by humpback whales and orca, be on the lookout for the whales’ tell-tale blows. Tonight’s anchorage is among the small bays and inlets that indent Admiralty Island, where there’s time to launch the kayaks and search for brown bears foraging along the shore.

Warm Springs Bay

While Westward is anchored for a few hours, hike the trail up to the lake that feeds the magnificent waterfall that drops into the head of the bay. On the way back from the lake, stop and soak in the natural hot pools overlooking the head of the falls. After taking your fill of the restorative waters, return to Westward and resume the journey.

Freshwater Bay

Westward will be anchoring in a small cove in front of an estuary system that supports a large population of brown bears. During fish runs, bears congregate near the entrance of a fish ladder that allows returning salmon access to their spawning streams, bypassing the dam built decades ago to support logging operations. We will explore the bay by kayak and then anchor our skiff in the stream at the foot of the falls where we may have an opportunity to watch and photograph brown bears sharing (not something bears often do) the bountiful returning salmon. From this stable base we can sit quietly, watch and photograph the gorging bears.

Baird, Le Conte & Dawes Glaciers

Each departure includes a visit to one or two glaciers. Each adventure is different, with possibilities to explore the newly foliated outwash plain exposed by Baird Glacier’s retreating ice, and/or cruise as close as a quarter mile of Le Conte’s or Dawes’ calving glacier face.

Hidden Falls Hatchery

Go ashore and tour the Hidden Falls Hatchery facility. When the salmon begin returning in late July, brown bears also visit the stream near the hatchery to re-stock their fat reserves for the coming winter. Moving on, the ship will reach Baranof Hot Springs before lunch, with plenty of time to hike to Baranof Lake (approximately 1 mile round trip). A post-hike soak in the hot spring pools will help soothe sore feet. By mid-afternoon, Westward will depart Warm Springs Bay to once again cross Chatham Strait, this time rounding Admiralty Island’s southern tip and entering Stephens Passage. Anchorage tonight is in one of several deep bays that serrate Admiralty’s southeast shoreline, with time to launch the kayaks and poke along the edges of the cove.

Tenakee Springs

This is a unique community of homesteaders and vacation home owners drawn to this remote area by its mineral hot springs. Explore this charming village individually or in small groups and then re-gather at the general store or bakery, to return to Westward, hoist anchor and get underway for the evening’s destination; a sheltered bay near the outflow of a mountain lake. Once securely anchored, go ashore and walk the 3-mile round trip trail to the lake.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

Sailing in time to reach Juneau 10:00am, complete the voyage along the length of Stephens Passage and enter Gastineau Channel and the final eight miles to Juneau. The Westward arrives in time for her guests to catch the early afternoon southbound flights.

Reverse Southeast Alaska's Western Passages Itinerary

Reaching Holcomb Bay at around 6:00 pm, enter the glacial fjord of Endicott Arm, where your captain will find an anchorage in time for a quiet first night aboard. Humpback whales are often found feeding in the area around the entrance to Endicott Arm, and both bears and wolves have been seen foraging along the shores at our night’s anchorage.

Disembark in Sitka this morning and transfer to the airport or explore the town further on your own.

HEAR IT FROM TRAVELERS WHO HAVE EXPLORED WITH US

Alaska has been in our minds for years... My 60th birthday seemed a great reason to make it happen! The friendliness and responsiveness of AdventureSmith staff when I first sent in an inquiry really sealed the deal. I cannot say enough about Tracie's food on the boat. It is truly some of the best food I have eaten anywhere! She also baked me an incredible birthday cake!

I truly enjoyed the whole trip but our time on the Westward was the one I'll remember most. It combined so many things I love: hiking, nature, kayaking, wildlife, wonderful people, and amazing food! And I learned so much. I loved the small size of the group. We went places and did things that no larger boat/group could do. Very special! The two very long days of travel to get to Kantishna was probably my least favorite. The bus ride into the park was beautiful and our guide was fabulous. We were just tired from traveling so long on the plane the day before and getting up early to catch the bus to the park entrance. Again, I don't think we could've really done it differently, coming from Tampa. Once we got to Kantishna, all was well. The six others on board the Westward were very congenial and we made a great group! Thank you for suggesting this itinerary. We got to see exactly what we had hoped for when we first started contemplating a trip to Alaska. I will remember it forever! Alaska has been in our minds for years but we had never made it there. My 60th birthday seemed a great reason to make it happen! The friendliness and responsiveness of AdventureSmith staff when I first sent in an inquiry really sealed the deal.

The Hilton in Anchorage was okay - seems to need a facelift soon but we weren't there long. The cabin at Kantishna was vey roomy and the beds were really comfortable. We had everything we needed. The Sheraton in Juneau was very comfortable and the staff very friendly. The Westward cabins are so efficient! I was amazed at how much room we had to put our clothes and other items. It was perfect.

Meals Review

I cannot say enough about Tracie's food on the boat. It is truly some of the best food I have eaten anywhere! She also baked me an incredible birthday cake! The food at Kantishna was fine. I know they are very remote, but I was dying for some local fish! The service was good and I enjoyed sitting with other guests. We met some really interesting people.

Crew & Guides Review

Mary was our favorite at Kantishna. She was so enthusiastic and led us on a wonderful 7 mile hike to Skyline Ridge (I think). She knew so much about the plants and all of the wildlife. All four of the folks aboard the Westward were exceptional. Don't know how I can say enough. Bill, Tracie, Kristin, and Liam. All were people I am very happy to have met.

Transportation Review

I really appreciated the detailed itinerary which I carried with me. Knowing exactly which dome train to check in to, for instance, was wonderful and eased any anxiety I may have had about being in the right place. Same with the buses we were on. I think our flights worked out well, although I am now not a big fan of the Seattle airport - it was a zoo! Glad we arrived early for our flight home. I appreciated the cabs being included as well.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

I felt that the support from AdventureSmith while planning the trip and before leaving was outstanding. I had all of the information that I needed. I felt that everyone involved was so friendly and quick to respond to any questions I had. We got wonderful, complete info about packing, etc., and felt very well-prepared.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

western power cruise

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

western power cruise

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

western power cruise

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

western power cruise

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

western power cruise

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

western power cruise

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

western power cruise

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Russia-Ukraine war latest: Putin 'may launch all-out bid to seize second city' - as Western officials fear major Russian advance

Russia has launched fresh strikes on critical infrastructure - with Kyiv residents told to cut energy consumption every night for the rest of 2024. Meanwhile, Western officials reportedly fear a major Russian advance - amid concerns Vladimir Putin could launch an attempt to seize Kharkiv.

  • Putin mocks peace conference
  • The big picture : Everything you need to know about the war this week
  • Your questions answered: Is it too late to save Ukraine?

While we haven't been able to bring you live updates today, we have been keeping an eye on what's been happening in the Ukraine conflict.

Here's a quick round-up of the key updates so far:

  • Two people were killed by Ukrainian strikes on the Russian-held parts of Kherson, the Moscow-installed regional governor said;
  • Russia's defence ministry said its air defence systems destroyed 10 Ukraine-launched drones over the Krasnodar region in southern Russia and five drones over the Black Sea overnight;
  • Ukraine similarly claimed to have downed 10 Russian drones;
  • The death toll in Zaporizhzhia from yesterday's attack, which Russia blames on Ukraine, rose to 16;
  • President Zelenskyy condemned last night's attack by Iran on Israel.

At least 10 people, including children, have been killed by shelling in a Russian-occupied town in Ukraine's southern Zaporizhzhia region, a local Kremlin-installed official said.

A Ukrainian rocket also struck a machine-building plant in Russian-occupied Luhansk in eastern Ukraine, injuring three civilians, according to Moscow-based official Vladimir Rogov.

Meanwhile, Russia has claimed to have taken a village in Ukraine's Donetsk region.

Russia's defence ministry said the capturing of Pervomaiske had improved its tactical position on the frontline.

Ukraine's army chief has also warned the situation on the eastern front had deteriorated in recent days, with Moscow's forces intensifying its armoured assaults.

Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi said battles were still raging for control of a village west of the devastated Bakhmut - an area that has seen some of the bloodiest fighting throughout the war.

We'll be back tomorrow morning with more updates on the war in Ukraine.

Two Biden administration officials have revealed the extent of China's involvement in Russia's war on Ukraine.

The officials spoke to Reuters news agency and said China has massively increased its sales to Russia of machine tools, microelectronics and other technology to Moscow.

These items are important because Russia is using them to make tanks, aircraft, missiles and other weapons for the war.

They also said:

  • About 90% of Russia's microelectronics came from China
  • Nearly 70% of Russia's approximately $900m in machine tool imports in the last quarter of last year came from China
  • Chinese and Russian entities have been working together to make drones in Russia
  • China is helping Russia improve its satellite and other space-based capabilities for use in the war. This could increase the threat Russia poses across Europe

US President Joe Biden has previously raised concerns with Chinese President Xi Jinping about Beijing's indirect involvement in the war.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen returned this week from a visit to Beijing and said she had warned China that the Biden administration was prepared to sanction Chinese banks, companies and Beijing's leadership if they helped Russia's military in the war.

She has already been given the go-ahead from Mr Biden to sanction financial institutions that help Russia's military-industrial complex.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is due to travel to China for talks next month.

Russia, increasingly isolated economically and diplomatically, has become more reliant on China in recent months.

One official said Chinese materials are helping Moscow undertake its "most ambitious defence expansion since the Soviet era and on a faster timeline than we believed possible early on in this conflict".

"Our view is that one of the most game-changing moves available to us at this time to support Ukraine is to persuade the PRC (China) to stop helping Russia reconstitute its military industrial base. Russia would struggle to sustain its war effort without PRC input," the official said.

Chinese Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu told Reuters that Beijing has not provided weapons to any party and that it is "not a producer of or party involved in the Ukraine crisis".

"We urge the US side to refrain from disparaging and scapegoating the normal relationship between China and Russia."

If Russia defeats Ukraine it will be a "turning point in history", former UK prime minister Boris Johnson says.

Writing in the Daily Mail, he criticised Western countries for not providing Ukraine with the weapons it needs to defeat Russia.

"Every week in which we fail to do the obvious — and give the Ukrainians the weapons they need — is a week in which Putin gets closer to his disgusting ambition, to torture a European country to death.

"Every day the pressure on the Ukrainians is growing — and yet the solution is within our grasp."

Mr Johnson, who visited Ukraine a number of times during his premiership, said: "A defeat for Ukraine would usher in a new era of fear in the whole Euro-Atlantic area, as Putin continues his drive to rebuild the Soviet empire: from the Baltics to Georgia to Moldova to Central Asia to the Arctic.

"It will be a terrifying moment for the people of Taiwan and the clearest possible signal to China that the West has lost the willpower to protect democracy.

"It will be a turning point in history, the moment when the West finally loses its post-war hegemony, the moment when borders everywhere are suddenly up for grabs and aggression is seen to pay — and all because of a failure to stand up for Ukraine."

Mr Johnson warned the world is "on a knife-edge, with a real risk that Western democracies are about to be humiliated, and autocracies emboldened around the world — because of our lassitude, our pathetic refusal to do what is necessary".

He said Ukraine is so short of shells that its troops sometimes have to wait under Russian bombardment because they can't fire back.

The shortage of air defences means Kharkiv, the second-largest city, is "in danger of being turned into another Mariupol", he added.

Ukrainians were able to intercept 90% of incoming strikes, he said, but now "we are starving them, for reasons I do not understand, of the protective shields they need".

Mr Johnson called on the US Congress to approve a $60bn military aid package earmarked for Ukraine and on the Germans to supply Taurus missiles.

The West - including Britain - needs to "snap out of our sleep-walk", he said, adding: "The simplest and most cost-effective way to defend freedom is to invest now in the defence of Ukraine."

Rescue workers in Ukraine have saved five puppies from under the debris of a destroyed building.

The non-residential building was on fire in the north-eastern city of Sumy, close to the border with Russia.

A video from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine showed the firefighters cuddling the squealing puppies and rinsing them off with water.

In a post of the emergency service's Telegram channel, officials said the "little ones" were not injured.

"This rescue story reminds us of the importance of human compassion and the willingness to help everyone, regardless of the circumstances," they added.

Ex-armed forces minister James Heappey has told Sky's defence and security editor Deborah Haynes the UK should consider sending its forces to Ukraine to train troops.

On the Sky News Daily, host Tom Cheshire talks to her and Sky's military analyst Professor Michael Clarke about the interview with Mr Heappey, who stepped down from his role last month.

They assess the bleak situation in Ukraine and why the conflict is at a critical stage. They also discuss how prepared the UK would be if it faced a war in the near future.

A former Ukrainian secret service employee has been injured in Moscow after a device under his car exploded.

Vasily Prozorov suffered leg injuries that are not considered life threatening after the device detonated as he tried to start his car, Radio Free Europe cited Russian media as saying.

According to RFE, Mr Prozorov worked for Ukraine's SBU until 2018.

The following year, he told media in Moscow that he had collaborated with Russia "for ideological reasons" from April 2014 until he left the SBU.

These photos show the damage to a thermal power plant in Kharkiv, eastern Ukraine.

A massive missile and drone attack destroyed and damaged a number of power plants across Ukraine overnight, part of a renewed Russian campaign targeting energy infrastructure.

The Trypilska plant, which was the biggest energy supplier for the Kyiv, Cherkasy and Zhytomyr regions, was struck numerous times, destroying the transformer, turbines and generators.

Vladimir Putin said the attacks were a response to Ukrainian strikes that targeted Russian oil refineries.

In Kharkiv, there were at least 10 other strikes on energy infrastructure, resulting in damage like that seen in these photos.

Ukraine's foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said more than 200,000 people in the region were without power.

Herman Halushchenko, its energy minister, said it was a "large scale, enormous, missile attack that affected our energy sector very badly".

More details have emerged about American Russell Bentley, who is missing in the Russian-controlled Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.

Online news outlet Mash said he disappeared on 8 April after a district in the city of Donetsk was shelled by Ukrainian forces.

Mash cited his wife as saying he had gone to see if anyone needed help but had not returned.

Mr Bentley joined pro-Russian fighters in eastern Ukraine in 2014.

According to Russian news outlet RIA, he later swapped his gun for journalism and worked with state-run news outlet Sputnik.

In a 2022 Rolling Stone interview, he came across as a conspiracy theorist (he said the collapse of the World Trade Towers was a "pre-planned controlled demolition") and a fan of dictators (he described war crimes-accused former Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi as "one of the greatest").

He became a citizen of the Donetsk People's Republic in 2017 and a citizen of Russia in 2020, said the interview, which was headlined The Bizarre Story Of How A Hardcore Texas Leftist Became A Frontline Putin Propagandist.

In words similar to those of Russia's president Vladimir Putin, Mr Bentley described the Ukrainian military as "genuine mass-murdering Nazis", also claiming their ranks were swelled by "thousands of ISIS cannibals" - claims that have been widely dismissed by commentators.
