Jogging, running, trails… Where to run in Nice Côte d’Azur?

7 February 2023

Some advice for runners… To have all the leisure to tread the ground of Nice Côte d’Azur!

Whether you are walking or running, you will have fun here in all seasons. You will discover extraordinary landscapes and breathtaking panoramas along picturesque paths.

Whether you are a jogger or an experienced runner, a runner or a fast walker, the Nice Côte d’Azur region offers you an ideal terrain to keep in shape with ease!

Put on your trainers, take a deep breath! Then open your eyes to the changing and beautiful colours of the trail ahead of you!

You don’t need to go to a gym to find a healthy lifestyle. The decor alone becomes your coach, if you know how to follow it.

The seaside as a training ground: run at any time of the day, in any season, in a stunning setting!

The promenade des anglais, an obvious choice….

The standard image of the region is of course the Promenade des Anglais , and it is also a must for jogging enthusiasts.

It is a generous and colourful 8 km running track. It brings together all athletes in search of oxygen and Mediterranean sea spray. It is a real postcard with exceptional sunsets in shades of orange-red or violet-blue, depending on the season. In summer, you can run around in the cool of the day, at dawn or late at night. In winter, it’s all day long, as temperatures vary from 6 to 15°.

Taking a little height in Nice to run

Go from sea blue to green on your way to Mont Boron . The wooded paths combine freshness and nature with one of the most extraordinary views of the coast.

Do you just want to keep up with the pace, in a very efficient way? Then head for the Gairaut canal . A fitness trail is available for all fitness enthusiasts. It’s hard to miss. Summer or winter, it remains an ideal place to go running in an enchanting setting, symbolised by the belvedere overlooking the Baie des Anges.

Of course, Nice is not the only place with wonderful trails to train on. Another very popular place for running is the Cagnes sur Mer racecourse at Rauba Capeu , used daily by hundreds of runners who love to build their jogging sessions at their own pace, splitting or not …, while taking stretching breaks on the benches overlooking the Grande Bleue.

Other spots, east of Nice

Villefranche-sur-Mer offers 4 walking trails that can be used for sport and relaxation. Circuits of up to 380m in height difference and from 4 to 6 km will make you discover the very famous bay of Villefranche.

Cap d’Ail and its coastal path invite you to go for a walk or a run (cover photo: @BBO Studio). The walk is just sumptuous, easy and pleasant.  The stairs of Cap Mala (more than 150 steps!) will not discourage the most athletic to reach the beach. Please note that for safety reasons, the path may be closed depending on the weather conditions. Do not hesitate to contact the information office or the department’s website .

The panoramic paths of the Tête de Chien (altitude 550 m) provide an opportunity to get some fresh air and admire the incredible view! Sports enthusiasts can reach “La tête de Chien”, located in the commune of La Turbie, at a run (a short trail with a 200m difference in altitude from the Espace Alain Prado). Access by bus and train from Cap d’Ail to the tête de Chien.

The Mid Country: treading the earth with the extraordinary blue of the Mediterranean as a horizon

The Grand Pré de Levens is 13 hectares of greenery which remains a favourite place for locals to picnic and play ball. Equipped with benches, fountains and a health course with 10 apparatus, the Grand Pré is the perfect place to keep fit, whatever the season.

Another interesting village for running is La Gaude . Its flowery alleys are a treat for the experienced jogger. The difference in altitude is nevertheless present.

Challenge seekers who want to flirt with the thrill of a trail will head for the Baou de la Gaude . This site is very interesting and offers a beautiful panorama, just like the Baou de Saint-Jeannet which you can discover if you are already well prepared in terms of legs (more than 400m of difference in height)

azur running tour

These first reliefs of the Alpes-Maritimes are a paradise for traileurs (nature and mountain races). They offer varied routes with breathtaking views. This is notably the case of the Baou des Blancs (Vence) where the 360° view allows you to contemplate the sea and the snow-covered Southern Alps!

Just a little higher up, the Plan des Noves circuit at the Col de Vence could be a good compromise between trail and jogging.

If you want to keep to a cross-country running pace, head back down to the Var valley. You can take the cycle path along the river and ride up to the Lac du Broc . It may lack relief but it is “very rolling” as the experienced say! And you can finish by cycling around the lake in a 3.4km loop without any difference in altitude.

Challenging the heights to push the limits: from running to trail running!

What is trail running? It is the generic term for off-road running. It is a trendy sport, practised in summer for greater safety, but sometimes in winter on terrain that is neither wet nor snowy.

In the Nice Côte d’Azur area, it is logical that you will be taken to the Mercantour or the Haut Pays to discover this very sporting discipline. Open to all, it allows you to combine sport and fast hiking with magnificent mountain landscapes. If you want to try the trail experience, nothing could be easier than to start with a workshop-type course. You can find one in Saint-Martin-Vésubie . It is a 3,200 m long loop with 290 m of ascent that can be used for several types of exercise. On the way up from the start, this loop allows you to work on improving your aerobic capacity.

azur running tour

Downhill is a great approach to technical work, or used to recover between reps by slowly descending. The objectives of such a workshop are great and develop your endurance and maximum oxygen consumption. It prepares you physically and psychologically for running speed, and improves stride efficiency by conditioning the respiratory, cardiac and muscular systems for competition practice.

The green route no. 1 – Tour du Sommet d’Auron is also a great introduction to trail running or perfect for a short training run. On the way out, a narrow path leads you to the summit of Auron. On the way back, a wider trail allows you to “unwind” easily.

The Tinée and Vésubie valleys are a paradise for trail running and offer training sessions reserved for real sportsmen.

Through this practice, it is important to respect the work of the farmers and owners who welcome you on their land, and to close the fences well to prevent the herds from escaping.

If you feel ready, put on your good shoes and set off in short strides to discover the Côte d’Azur terrain!

Great Runs

Nice, France

See also our running guide for the côte d'azure between cannes and ventimiglia.

azur running tour

Nice is the unofficial capital of the The Côte d’Azur, which stretches from Cannes in the South to Monaco/Monte Carlo in the north. The ‘French Riviera’, is a spectacular setting, with azure waters, yachts, hilltop towns, beaches, and the mountains Alpes-Maritimes in the background. The area is a popular tourist destination, on account of its beauty, beaches, and great weather. Our guide to running in Nice features several wonderful coastal routes along the Côte d’Azur between Cannes and Ventimiglia.

Some of the running highlights in the Nice area are Promenade des Anglais in Nice, a ‘runseeing’ tour of Monaco/Monte-Carlo , and a tour of St.-Jean-Cap-Ferrat . There’s a series of peninsulas, each of which has its own vibe, and great for running: Antibes , Cap de Nice (Coco Beach), Cap Ferrat, and Cap d’Ail. Our routes in these areas areas are a combination of road, seaside promenade, and in sections, ‘coastal trail’, known as the ‘sentier littoral’. There are many beaches in the Côte, but they are crowded in season, and the sand quality is generally not suitable for running. Also note that some of the roads in the area are very narrow, with no shoulder or sidewalk. We’ve paid careful attention to that in designing our routes.

One final aspect is that transportation is terrific in this area. It can be really fun to run one way and hop on a train or bus back.

Nice Côte d’Azur by UTMB: Routes, contenders and how to follow

Runners will take on Nice Côte d’Azur by UTMB for the second time from 22 to 25 September 2023, with the event forming part of the UTMB World Series .

It comes just a few days on from Julian Alps Trail Run by UTMB and is set to attract over 4,000 athletes.

The French Riviera, Mercantour Massif and Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis provide a stunning base for the competition, which is aiming to become the biggest trail running event in the Mediterranean basin.

Running Stones are on offer in all three races, with four, three, two and one available in the 165km Ultra Trail Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur, 111km Roubion-Nice, 59km Menton-Nice and 17km Villefranche-Nice respectively.

Ultra Trail Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur will also provide direct access to Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) 2024 for the top three finishers.

The top three in the Roubion-Nice race will earn direct access to the UTMB CCC, while podium finishers in the Menton-Nice will earn a place at UTMB OCC.

Nice Côte d’Azur by UTMB routes

Ultra Trail Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur features 8,700m of climbing over 165km, reaching more than 2,650m above sea level.

The race begins in Auron and winds through chestnut forests, following the Tinée river before skirting the Mercantour massif.

After crossing a series of incredible ridges at the halfway point, runners head south, scaling Mont Leuze, Mont Vinaigrier, Mont Alban and then Mont Boron.

The route then winds down a steep staircase and onto the coast, with a final stretch before the finish on the Promenade des Anglais.

Roubion-Nice consists of 5,000m of ascent across 111km, starting in the small village of Roubion, which is built on a cliff in the south of the Mercantour National Park.

The early stages take runners along the Vignols track before joining with the 165km course between the Tinée and Vésubie valleys.

The 59km Menton-Nice race begins with a ‘vertical kilometre’ to the Col du Berceau, the first of 3,000m of climbing.

The course then winds through the medieval village of Sainte-Agnès and to the Cime de Baudon at 1,266m, which offers a panoramic view of Corsica and the Mercantour peaks.

Nice Côte d'Azur by UTMB

After a few kilometres along the peaks, via Fort de la Revère and Mont Bataille, there is a dive towards the finish on the Promenade des Anglais.

The 17km Villefranche-Nice starts at Villefranche-sur-Mer, and involves 700m of ascent.

The first part of the race takes runners past Saint Michel’s church, Aire St Michel and the Col 4 Chemins.

The route then heads to the coast and climbs up to the Nice old town before offering a view of the Baie des Anges ahead of the finish at Promenade des Anglais.

Duke vs. NC State score, takeaways: Wolfpack shock Blue Devils in ACC Tournament, continue unlikely run

The blue devils, a no. 2 seed, lost their first game at the acc tournament to no. 10 seed nc state, playing its third game in three days.

NCAA Basketball: ACC Conference Tournament Quarterfinal-North Carolina State vs Duke

WASHINGTON — For the first time since 2013, No. 11  Duke is leaving the ACC Tournament without a victory. NC State – playing its third game in three days – stunned the Blue Devils 74-69 to make the Blue Devils' stay in the nation's capital a short one.

No. 10 seed NC State will face the winner of Boston College vs. Virginia in the semifinals Friday. No. 2 seed Duke will head home with a uncharacteristic long wait until Selection Sunday.

The Wolfpack led by as much as 11 and by 10 late, but a long list of errors -- three consecutive missed free throws and a blown dunk that resulted in a technical among them -- helped Duke claw back to within two. That's when  DJ Horne   stepped to the free-throw line, and after his makes, Duke had finally run out of rallies.

NC State made seven of 16 3-pointers (compared to five of 20 for Duke), but the biggest difference came via NC State's 18-8 edge in second-chance points. Thirteen of those 18 came in the second half, as the Wolfpack answered every Duke surge.  Kyle Filipowski  had 28 points and 14 rebounds for the Blue Devils, who went one-and-done in the ACC Tournament for the first time since 2013.

The Blue Devils missed its first nine field goal attempts and never got on track offensively thereafter, especially from the perimeter. NC State led by as much as 11 early, but Filipowski kept Duke close with 12 first-half points. Horne's tough runner at the first-half buzzer gave him 12 points to match Filipowski – and the Wolfpack a 37-34 lead.

Any hope that the break would get the Blue Devils' offense going quickly fizzled, as NC State's 6-0 run out of the break pushed the lead to nine.

Filipowski kept going, though, and Tyrese Proctor 's layup cut the lead to two. NC State was undeterred. Casey Morsell immediately responded with an and-one to push the lead to five, and the Wolfpack answered seemingly every Duke surge with a bucket, a key rebound or a defensive stand. After Morsell's basket and free throw, NC State scored 11 of its next 13 points via second-chance opportunities, at one point pushing the lead to 10.The teams went back and forth, with NC State holding a multi-possession lead – and seemingly home free, before things got wild late.

Filipowski brought it back to five, and NC State's Ben Middlebrooks blew a wide-open dunk, getting assessed an administrative technical in the process. Duke got back to within two on Jared McCain 's free throw and another Filipowski bucket down low as NC State missed three straight free throws. But a miracle comeback wasn't in the works.

Horne – a constant all night – hit two free throws to get the lead to four with 15 seconds left, and Duke got no closer.

Duke needs more from its backcourt, bench

Two stats stand out from Duke's loss: The first is 23 points on 7 of 28 (25%) shooting. Those were the combined numbers from Duke's starting backcourt of Proctor, McCain and Jeremy Roach . The second number is 0. That's the number of points Duke's bench scored.

The lack of backcourt production was alarming, as was the appearance of one of its members. Jared McCain played with a bandage just above his eye after banging into teammate Jaylen Blakes in warmups and receiving stitches.

"Jared wasn't himself, no doubt," Jon Scheyer said. "Jared will say he's fine because he doesn't make excuses. ... He didn't have the same pop like he normally does."

Still, Scheyer expected his guards to pick up the slack. It never happened.

"We need them to be better," Scheyer said. "We rely on them to do so much for us. It's not the scoring. It's everything else. It's the poise. It's the rebounding. It's the guarding. It's everything else that comes with it. ... We need it every game."

Meanwhile, Duke's bench combined for just four shot attempts in 19 minutes of playing time.

Not all is lost for Blue Devils

As disappointing as the loss is, Filipowski was terrific.  Mark Mitchell  also added 18 points, including two 3-pointers. He had only made nine all season coming in.

Duke's starting frontcourt -- both veterans -- said they'd have messages for their teammates.

"Just knowing that there's not many opportunities left and you've got to make the most of them," he said. "Just really got to embrace it, be all in with each other."

Mitchell had a similar line of thinking.

"I would just tell the guys just to cherish the moments," he said. "Obviously, not like in a sentimental way. But on the court, every time we get to play, just appreciate it. I think if we do that, we'll go all out for it. At times our team this season, I think we've just expected things to come. I remember last year, how sudden it ended. Obviously, it was a different path with how sudden it was. I think if we just cherish what we have each and every day and win each and every day going forward, I think we'll do something special.

NC State makes history

Tuesday of championship week can be known as a bit of a slog -- an appetizer while one waits for the conference's top teams to to take the court.

Not so this year. The Wolfpack are the first team in ACC Tournament history to make it to Friday after opening the tournament on Tuesday. NC State trailed Louisville by double digits on Tuesday before rallying for a 94-85 win. The Wolfpack showed no signs of fatigue in an 83-65 win over Syracuse on Wednesday, and despite some nervous moments late Thursday, earned their best win of the season.

"Obviously we're prepared for this," Kevin Keatts said. "I would say this: A lot of people, we talk about our conditioning and how it pays off for us, and when you look at those three games that we played, honestly, we've looked like the more fresh team than anybody."

It's the first time NC State has won three games in a single ACC Tournament since 2007.

Wolfpack dominate second-chance points

Just ten days ago, Duke went on the road and NC State 79-64. A big reason? The Blue Devils held a 22-14 second-chance points advantage. On Thursday, NC State flipped that battle on its head, winning 18-8.

"Back in Raleigh, they really kicked our butts on the glass, and we decided we weren't going for that today," DJ Burns Jr . said.
