El Tour a Guatapé está diseñado para que lo pueda realizar cualquier tipo de persona ya sea adulto, niño o anciano.

Para el Tour a guatapé los niños pagan el precio de acuerdo a su edad de la siguiente manera:

• 0 a 3 años pagan $10.000 por persona correspondiente al seguro de viaje deben ir cargados y los gastos corren por cuenta de los adultos que están a cargo
• 4 a 7 años pagan $89.000 por persona e incluye todo lo descrito en el tour
• 8 años en adelante pagan la tarifa completa $99.000 por persona

Para el Tour a Guatapé tenemos disponibles los siguientes métodos de pago:

PIEDRA DEL PEÑOL Y PUEBLO DE GUATAPÉ.

El municipio o pueblo de Guatapé queda a dos horas de la hermosa ciudad de Medellín Colombia, por el Oriente Antioqueño. Guatapé fue fundada en el año de 1811 por Francisco Giraldo Giménez y con el pasar de los años se ha vuelto en uno de los lugares más hermosos y turísticos del Oriente (Aunque también hay otros hermosos pueblos como: Marinilla, Rionegro, La ceja, el Retiro, y muchos otros). Sobre todo, encontramos Casas decoradas con hermosos zócalos y mucho colorido, lo que hace que cada rincón sea mágico.

Además de todo lo que hemos dicho tenemos una de las piedras más grandes del mundo, llamada “ la piedra del Peñol ” la cual es un monolito que se dice que pesa 66 millones de toneladas y   tiene  una altura de 220 metros . También, es interesante saber que para llegar a la punta hay que subir unos 700 escalones , pero no siempre fue así. 

Hace mucho tiempo este monumento natural ( Piedra del Peñol ) era símbolo de adoración para los grupos indígenas del sector. Además, cuando se construyó el pueblo del Peñol la piedra no era tenida es gran estima, porque no servía para la economía de la época, que era en su época la agricultura.

Para el año de 1954 fue escalada por primera vez por Don Luis Eduardo Villegas López, quien juntamente con algunos de sus amigos llegaron a la cima después de 5 días. Posteriormente Don Luis compra estos terrenos, y para el día de hoy su familia es la dueña de este espectacular monumento.

About Guatape 

Guatape is a beautiful town of 6,000 residents situated on the shores of Lago Guatape. The lake is actually a man-made reservoir and dam built in the 1970s. Unfortunately, many small towns and farms on the other side of the reservoir were lost but Guatape thrived and became one of the most important electricity-producing towns in Colombia. 

However, what this colorful town is truly known for are its zocalos . Zocalos are the murals on the bases of the buildings that depict pictures and can be seen on almost every building in Guatape. Zocalos have become an important part of Guatape’s culture and history. Some of the zocalos reflect a family’s personal history while some reflect the business and some are just purely decorative! 

The town’s history is rooted in farming and you’ll still see many farmers and zocalos representing this heritage. But now, Guatape has a huge tourist market as well and you can see that through the many businesses that are flourishing thanks to tourism.

How to get to Guatape from Medellin 

Every day, hundreds of tourists flock to Guatape from Medellín. It’s pretty simple–so even if you’re directionally challenged (guilty), you can find your way to Guatape. 

First things first, let’s talk about timing. Guatape is a bit of a trip–a couple hours by bus. So factor in the trip there and back, you’ll want to get an early start on the day. Wake up early, grab a quick snack, and head over to the bus station at Terminale Norte to catch a 7 am or 8 am bus. Buses leave every hour on the hour. There’s no set “start” time because it depends on the day and time of year… but 7 or 8 am is a reasonable time to assume the buses will be running. 

The location to buy tickets is on the ground floor of the terminal and you’re looking for booth #14. The bus company is called Sotrasanvicente & Guatape La Piedra . You can expect to pay around 16,000 pesos (perhaps a tiny bit more) for a trip to Guatape (at time of writing, December 2022). Hop on the bus and get going!

The bus will stop at both Guatape and La Piedra del Pinon. The first stop is La Piedra and I recommend conquering the rock first while you’re still fresh and wide eyed! After you climb the rock, just head back to the bus stop and make your way to Guatape for the rest of the day. To return, just do the opposite of everything you’ve already done! Voila!

What to pack for a Guatape day tour

The weather in Guatape is pretty similar to that of Medellín . You can expect mild weather with plenty of humidity and often a chance of rain. Even in the “dry” season, there are random showers throughout the day almost daily in this part of Colombia! Prepare for chilly rain showers with temperatures hovering around the low- to- mid 60s (Fahrenheit) but don’t be surprised if it’s sunny and mid-70s (Fahrenheit)! What I mean to say is, be prepared for any type of weather.

For a day trip to Guatape, you’ll want to pack the essentials. Make sure you grab a rain jacket and some comfortable, waterproof shoes. Pack sunglasses and a water bottle because you’ll be outside most of the day! Throw everything you need into a day pack (we love this one!) so you have plenty of room for your camera, a portable charger, and snacks. Never leave on an adventure without snacks! Especially if you choose to do a day tour, you may get one meal provided but won’t have much opportunity to snack. 

Don’t forget sunscreen and a hat! If the sun is shining, you’re sure to get plenty of it when you’re exploring Guatape.

What to do in Guatape in one day

Luckily, Guatape is a rather small town so it’s easy to see most of it in one day. Even though it’s small, it packs a big punch! I guarantee you’ll be thinking of the precious zocalos and friendly people for weeks to come. Here’s what to explore on your day tour to Guatape from Medellín.

Plazoleta de Los Zocalos

You can’t visit Guatape without running into the Plazoleta de Los Zocalos, the colorful town square teeming with cafés and shops. There are two stories of shops and restaurants, giving you a view from both the ground and a bird’s eye view of this busy area. Grab a coffee and people watch, eat some ice cream on the steps, or grab a souvenir from the shops. This square is probably the most Instagrammable area in Guatape with the umbrellas overhead and the colorful zocalos on the bases of the buildings!

Take a boat tour on Guatape lake

Situated right on the shore, Guatape is the perfect launching point for touring one of the largest lakes in Colombia. The lake is actually a man-made reservoir formed by a hydroelectric dam that provides 30% of the electricity supply to Colombia. Hop on a cruise boat to explore this giant body of water and learn a bit more about its history and importance to Colombia. Many of the tours also offer alcohol, soft drinks, and snacks to make your trip more enjoyable. In addition to being an important electricity supply, you can also see some amazing hotels and homes… even an old home of Pablo Escobar’s! 

Walk down Calle de Recuerdo 

Calle de Recuerdo, or “memory lane”, is undoubtedly the most beautiful street in Guatape. 

Go shopping 

Just wander along the streets of Guatape and you’ll pass dozens of adorable stores. This is the perfect place to search for artisanal, handmade crafts. No matter what unique gift you’re looking for, there’s an excellent chance you’ll find it somewhere in Guatape! The best part? You’re also supporting the local businesses!

See the cathedral 

Continue along until you find the square with the cathedral… trust me, you’ll know it when you see it! The cathedral, Parroquia Nuestro Senora del Carmen, or the Church of Our Lady Carmen, will be hard to miss. It’s one of the most stunning buildings we saw during our time in Colombia! Take a seat near the fountain and watch people milling in and out of the church or even wander inside to see the beautiful indoor architecture. 

The area around the cathedral is also beautiful with a fountain, plenty of restaurants, and sometimes street performers. Take a seat and enjoy the view (even better with ice cream in hand, in my opinion!).

La Piedra del Pinon 

About 15 minutes from Guatape is the famed La Piedra del Pinon which has also been called Rock of Guatape in the past. This huge mammoth rock sits above the reservoir and has become a huge tourist attraction for visitors from around the world. The rock itself was formed over 70 million years ago and is over 200 meters high!

While I’ll say this isn’t something I’d do over and over again, it is definitely worth the visit on your first trip to Medellín ! It only takes about 15 to 20 minutes to climb the 649 steps to the top of the rock to get some pretty outstanding views.

You’ll feel like you’re juuuuuust about to pass out when you finally get to the last set of steps. Once you get to the top, grab a mango michelada and enjoy the beautiful views of the reservoir and area surrounding the rock. The atmosphere at the top is almost like a mini-club with people enjoying drinks and the views. It’s all in the experience! 

To get back to the bottom, you’ll pass through a gimmicky tourist shop and then can make your way down. Take your time–the way down is almost harder than the way up!

To get to and from Piedra del Pinon, you can take a taxi or a quick tuk tuk. You can’t miss the tuk tuks, called chivas, that are brightly decorated and waiting to take you where you need to go. This would be a fun way to get from point A to B!

Guatape waterfall

Have a little bit more time to explore? Head out to the Guatape waterfall. The waterfall’s real name is La Cazuela and it’s just about 30 minutes outside of Guatape. You’ll need to find your own way there, like renting a motorbike. It will also be helpful to have access to some sort of GPS because I’ve heard it can be a little tricky to find. But once you’re there, you get (free!) access to a beautiful waterfall and small swimming hole–perfect for a hot summer day!

Guatape day trip or stay overnight?

Is it worth it to stay in Guatape overnight? Well, it depends. If you’re already short on time in Medellín , you’ll want to make your way back so you can maximize the time you have to see everything in Medellín! However, if you have a slower itinerary and can swing it… you will want to experience this magical town at night! Once the crowds depart, you can get a better (and quieter) feel for Guatape. Enjoy a quiet dinner at La Fogota for an authentic experience and then stroll the sleepy streets.

Where to stay overnight in Guatape

There are a couple different options for hotels. Check out Hotel La Madriguera Guatape for something within walking distance to the Plazoleta. Want a more resort feel? Closer to La Piedra you’ll find Hotel Los Recuerdos which has a pool, a restaurant, and its own nightclub! Looking for a unique and luxurious adventure?! Look no further than Bosko . Bosko is an incredibly luxurious text stay overlooking the reservoir. Count me in!

Don’t feel like a DIY day tour to Guatape? No problem! This little town is so popular with tourists there are no less than 14 billion tour companies that will take you to Guatape. Okay, I exaggerate a bit, but my point is you can certainly find an amazing tour for the day so you don’t have to deal with the headache of planning it yourself. 

In fact, this is exactly what we did. After planning a full 2 week itinerary all over Colombia I didn’t feel like searching for bus tickets and taking taxis between Guatape and La Piedra del Pinon. So we booked a tour through Guatape Tours and it was fantastic. We got to climb the rock, see the reservoir by boat, and see the beautiful zocalos. The only thing you miss out on is seeing the town at night but we all have to make sacrifices sometimes, right?

During this Medellín Guatapé Tour, we will take you there but without missing out on driving through one of the most exclusive areas of Medellin´s eastern suburbs.   Join us on our tour to visit one of the most unique pueblos in Colombia, and enjoy the drive between Medellin and Guatapé.

Enjoy colorful farmland in the proximity of El Peñol as a mouth-opener to the wonderful views that you will get from the Rock. Climbing the 700+ stairs to the top of the 220-meter high rock offers 360-degree breathtaking views of the surrounding areas. 

But if you’re not into climbing stairs, we can spend extra time exploring the colorfully painted facades (zócalos) of Guatapé’s houses and walking along the waterfront in town.

As an optional activity and at an additional cost, we can include a boat ride around the lake in your Guatapé Tour package, which takes us past the vacation houses of famous and infamous Colombian celebrities.

And if you would like to add an optional horse ride on the way back to Medellín, just let us know so we can make the necessary arrangements.

• Additional Cost: $25 USD per person, minimum 2 passengers) – COP $98,000 per person, approx.

A brief visit to a coffee plantation to learn about the coffee process during the Guatapé Tour in detail:

• Additional Cost: $20 USD per person, minimum 2 passengers) – COP $79,000 per person, approx.

Free transfer to Medellin airport:

• Please note that if you have an afternoon flight departing after 2:00 pm but no later than 8:00 pm from the Rionegro International Airport (MDE) after your Guatapé Tour is over, we will provide you with a free airport transfer at the conclusion of the tour as we can just drop you off after the Guatapé Tour on the way back to Medellín. This represents savings of around USD$40 which is the usual cost of a private airport transfer out of Medellín.

Este tour aunque es llamado Tour a Guatapé también puede ser llamado Tour Piedra del Peñol , ya que visitamos estos 2 lugares, no solo el hermoso y colorido pueblo, también la grandiosa Piedra del Peñol.

La piedra del Peñol se ha convertido en unos de los lugares más importantes para visitar si estás en Colombia; por sus hermosas vistas, su historia y también porque es un monumento natural de más de 200 metros de altura.

Disfruta de una experiencia inolvidable mientras subes a «La Piedra», una de las estructuras monolíticas más altas del mundo. Ubicado en la región de Guatapé, este sitio único es un desafío a conquistar y te hará sentir como un pequeño ser humano. Descienda con asombro y descubra las mejores vistas de América del Sur mientras aprende la historia detrás de todo.

Este será un recorrido fascinante que podrá disfrutar. Puedes conocer un hermoso lago creado por el hombre, en realidad es una represa. Hablando un poco de historia; Antioquia tenía una fuente para abastecer de energía, pero la demanda de energía eléctrica del país necesitaba más. 

La represa de Guatapé fue construida para crear una interconexión con los demás embalses de Colombia y así cubrir las necesidades de todo el territorio”. Entre abril del año de 1978 y mayo de 1979, los desalojos y su inmediata demolición de viviendas fueron parte de la vida cotidiana del pueblo del viejo Peñol, hasta que finalmente todos fueron reubicados a lo que hoy se conoce como el pueblo del nuevo peñol. 

El proyecto del embalse de guatapé se estima en 45 millones de dólares, lo que para la época era una cantidad impresionante.

PUEBLO DE GUATAPE

Guatapé es un municipio o pueblo colombiano que se encuentra ubicado en el departamento de Antioquia, lo encontramos a dos horas de la ciudad de Medellín. 

Este municipio es famoso mundialmente por ser el hogar de una maravilla natural llamada la Piedra del Peñol, por su represa artificial y también por todo el colorido que se encuentra dentro del pueblo en sus Zócalos. 

Podemos decir que los zócalos son obras artísticas, en su mayoría en 3D que están en la parte inferior de las viviendas del pueblo de Guatapé.

Itinerario Del Viaje A Guatapé

Para este Viaje de un día a Guatapé lo primero que vamos hacer es encontrarnos en alguno de los puntos de encuentro seleccionados, si es un tour privado será en el hotel donde los recogemos.

Al esperar al resto de personas nos dirigiremos por la vía Medellín – Bogota al pueblo de Marinilla y después de pasar por él, nos detendremos a desayunar. Después de este receso pasaremos por el pueblo del Nuevo Peñol, para pasar luego a la réplica del viejo peñol y poder montar en el barco rumbero (en este caso para el tour grupal, si es el tour privado no está incluido, pero si les daremos tiempo de hacerlo).

Después iremos a la piedra del Peñol (el tiquete se podrá comprar en la misma piedra del Peñol) y les daremos el tiempo de subir y bajar, el guía de turismo te esperará mientras lo haces. El almuerzo se podrá comer aquí en la piedra o en el pueblo de Guatapé , al cual iremos luego de ir a la piedra.

Luego de disfrutar de la gran roca del peñón podremos disfrutar del colorido pueblo de Guatapé , donde visitaremos el malecón, el parque, la iglesia y la plaza de los zócalos (este es el lugar más conmemorativo del municipio). Después de disfrutar de este lugar y tener un tiempo libre, subimos nuevamente al vehículo para regresar nuevamente a la ciudad. Estaríamos llegando a Medellín a las 6:00 pm aproximadamente (esto depende del tráfico y dinámica del tour de cada día)

Tipos de Excursiones a Guatapé

Para ir a este hermoso lugar tienes 2 tipos de tours o excursiones, Los cuales han sido ampliamente aceptados por los turistas. Los 2 planes son:

• TOUR PRIVADO: este es un tour que se realiza solo con las personas que realizaron la reservaciòn, en el cual los recogemos en el hotel y al finalizar los dejamos en el hotel. El transporte depende del número de personas que harán el recorrido turístico.
• TOUR GRUPAL: este tour es un tour que se realiza con más personas en un bus especial de turismo, quiere decir que te incluimos en un grupo. Para este tour debes llegar a los puntos de encuentro que te vamos a señalar más adelante.

• El tour dura aproximadamente 9 horas. En ocasiones puedes demorar un poco menos o un poco más, eso depende de la dinámica del tour por parte del guía y los turistas y también del tráfico vehicular del día.

PIEDRA EL PEÑÓL DE GUATAPÉ

El peñón de Guatapé, o piedra del Peñol, es un monolito de 220 metros de altura localizado en Guatapé (Antioquia, Colombia). La piedra de El Peñol es una masa granítica, compuesta por cuarzo, feldespato y mica, puedes llegar hasta su cima mediante 740 escalones que están incrustadas en ella. Una vez terminado el recorrido tendrán una espectacular vista de 360 grados única en el mundo

La Plazoleta de los Zócalos

La Plazoleta de los Zócalos y la Calle de los Recuerdos en Guatapé son dos lugares emblemáticos que reflejan la rica cultura y la historia del pueblo. El embalse de Guatapé

Una comisión de ingenieros y arquitectos recorrió hace algunas semanas el malecón de Guatapé para acordar los detalles de lo que será la segunda etapa del proyecto.

La primera estación de Policía Turística de Antioquia está en Guatapé

Guatape and Coffee Farm Tour Itinerary

All our tours are private and include pickup and drop off, so we start from your place at the time that is more convenient for you.

Then, we head east of Antioquia to start with our first delicious stop.

Exotic Fruit Tasting 

Colombia is the most diverse country in the world in fruit production, as we grow over 430 fruits throughout our territory.

This is why we think we should take you to a fruit stand to try some of them.

In this short stop we provide you different exotic fruits you probably didn't even know existed, with intense sour or sweet flavors.

These are some of the fruits we could try in our Fruit Tasting included in this Guatape and Coffee Farm Tour.

After delighting the palate with these exotic fruits we are ready to head to our second stop: the Coffee Farm.

Coffee Farm Tour

At the coffee plantation you meet a lovely traditional coffee farmer that will walk us through the amazing world of coffee.

We start our coffee tour with an introduction in which we explain the different stages of coffee production from the moment they are planted to when they are ready to be picked from the trees.

After this complete introduction we start to pick coffee beans in the plantation.

After picking coffee beans we peel, ferment and wash them to remove the mucilage and continue to the next stage.

Drying the coffee beans

The coffee beans need to be completely dry in order to be processed.

To do this, a type of green-house called Marquesina is used, which keeps and increases the heat inside drying the beans faster.

Threshing, Roasting, Grinding and Packing the coffee

When the coffee beans are completely dry we need to remove the shell so we use a machine to do it.

The result of this process is the green coffee. This is the stage at which most of the Colombian coffee is exported.

However, in our coffee tour the process goes further with the roasting process having 3 different levels depending on your taste:

• Highly roasted.
• Medium-high (most popular one).

The next process is the grinder, where we put the brown roasted beans to grind.

Finally, the last process is packing the fresh coffee you just processed.

After our hosts pack the coffee you can buy it directly from them at a very fair price.

After learning everything about coffee, we go towards the  Guatape Rock.

Climbing Up The Guatape Rock

At this massive rock you get the chance to climb up it. It's 749 steps and 50 minutes approximately to go up and down.

Once you reach the top, you can stay up there for as long as you wish as you witness one of the most beautiful views you have ever seen.

This is not only our opinion but that of hundreds of tourists we have taken there.

However, our Guatape and Coffee Farm Tour still has more to offer.

Our next destination is Guatape, one of the most colorful and picturesque towns in Colombia.

Guatape Town The City of Zocalos

At this town we take a fully narrated walking tour through the town's landmarks: church, main square, remembrance street, Zocalos Square and more.

If you like shopping this is a good place to do it since there are a lot of hand crafted souvenirs and all kind of items to bring back home.

Tour Medellin Guatape

On this tour Medellin Guatape we invite you to discover this beautiful valley in a full day of exciting tours. Guatape not only has natural appeal with its green landscapes, but also its Colombian colonial architecture in an entertaining tour of its plaza, and its cobbled and colorful streets.

This tour is a little different from what Medellin is, since Guatape is less noisy and many choose it because it is far from the city and they take a quiet tour. This is undoubtedly one of the best tours you can do if you come to Medellin.

The Penol stone

This is one of the most impressive natural monuments and the most recognized by national and foreign travelers. This great monolith is composed of quartz, feldspar and mica and with 740 steps will lead you to the top to appreciate some of the most beautiful views in Medellin. Upon reaching the top you will find a restaurant, a souvenir shop and balconies to take a nice photo of for the memory.

Depending on your physical condition, it will take approximately 20 minutes, and during the ascent you will find balcony places to look at, to rest, and if you feel fatigued, there you will see a paramedic station to give you medical attention.

An exact replica

The old peñol is about 62 kilometers from the town you will meet, and this was due to the fact that in the 70s there was a construction of a dam and the old town of guatape had to be flooded, in fact there is a museum where you can admire photographs of this old town.

The new Peñol is an exact copy of the old one, preserving this colonial and colorful style, with its cobbled streets and squares to have a beer or have a coffee.

As for nightlife, it is quite lively, at night you will find bars for all styles, restaurants where you will be presented with typical dishes of the region, and you can also take long walks along the Malecón and take photos.

The great artificial reservoir

Make long journeys through the great artificial reservoir, we can rent you a boat, or a Jet Ski and tour this great reservoir that extends several kilometers, here you can also do activities such as fishing. All these activities are in our package.

The great surprise is that under this large reservoir is the old town of Guatape, which was flooded in the 1970s. In fact, you can see the tip of the cross of the old church of old Peñol.

Coffee Plantation and Guatape Tour a must do!!

Sara was amazing!! She text us the night before to introduce herself. From the time she picked us up until the time she dropped us off, she shared so much information about Medellín which was appreciated because this was our first time visiting. She was incredibly knowledgeable about every aspect of our tour: explaining about the local fruits, the coffee processing steps, the history of Guatapé Rock and the town itself! She was also prepared with umbrellas and ponchos for us. If you are visiting Medellin I would highly recommend this tour and Sara! Sara - thanks for taking such good care of us today!

The tour was amazing we had so much fun despite the rain. The rock was a lot of steps but worth the view. Guatape was picturesque. The best part of the entire tour was Sara. She was amazing. Very knowledgeable and friendly. She brought us to the fruit stand and explained everything while we tasted the delicious fruits. She answered every question and gave us many recommendations for Medellin as well as other locations we were traveling. I would recommend any tour with Sara.

Did this tour with Andres as our tour guide and had a great experience. We comfortably fit 5 people in the car, ATVs were fun as well as exploring the city of Guatapé. We asked to get coffee on the way and Andres took us to a local coffee spot that was amazing. All in all a great tour that I will recommend to my friends who visit

This tour was a lot of fun for our whole family (3 kids ranging in age from 3 to 9). Erika, our guide, was so kind, informative and helpful. She tailored the tour every step of the way to what worked for our family and was always mindful of how the kids were doing. It made a huge difference; she was patient, flexible and fun - the kids enjoyed being with her. The artwork and community in Comuna 13 was fascinating to see & appreciate - the kids also enjoyed the slides & escalators. It did get pretty crowded as we were leaving, so we were glad that Erika took us early in the morning. Playing tejo will be a definite highlight of our trip - we all loved it; especially the kids (we modified the rules for them a bit). They had so much fun and we had lots of laughs - we recommend it!!

10/10 recommend this tour! Our guide Danielle was super helpful and had great energy. Once we reached the mountain for paragliding, everyone on the staff was very courteous and attentive. It was easy and so fun!! Smooth sailing (:

This tour was one of the highlights of our time in Colombia, I would highly recommend! Our tour guide, Sara, was extremely knowledgeable and interesting and we loved being able to soak up all the information she shared with us, not just about the things on the tour, but anything we asked about related to Colombia. We were picked up and dropped off at our hotel and Sara tailored the tour based on the holidays, times of day, etc meaning we didn't have to queue much for anything. She was also a really good driver, we felt very safe and I didn't get car sick (which happens to me usually). The coffee farm tour was excellent, we learned a lot and also got to step through the whole process ourselves. They were great at taking photos of us as we carried out each activity, without having to ask, which we loved! And the coffee was delicious :) Thank you so much Sara and Mile!!
