One can come across the Samadhi of the great Indian hero Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali situated at Musa Kota amidst Dudhatoli sanctuary.

The Binsar trek is an exciting experience and the trekkers can enjoy the beautiful views throughout the expedition. Binsar is enveloped with hanging moss, ferns, alpine flora, different varieties of wild flowers and forests where one can find rhododendron and oak trees.

If you are a bird watching enthusiast, during a trek in Binsar you will come across a number of beautiful and rare birds. The trek is rather simple and the forest cover will lead to small streams, lush green fields, but be careful of lion ants and tunnel spiders.

Located on a ridge in the Great Himalayas, Almora is a beautiful Indian city that plays host to thousands of tourists every year. This city calls the Indian state of Uttarakhand home. Its scenic hill terraces, surrounding streams and lush forests covering the towering hills house some of the best Almora tourism places. If you are planning to visit a hill station on your next vacation, consider visiting Almora for a serene vacation in nature’s lap. The existence of Almora can be traced back to the days of the Hindu epic Mahabharata. The Mahabharata mentions that the Chand Kings of the Kumaon dynasty ruled over this city in the 8th and 9th centuries BC. Almora is named after a local plant called Bhilmora that was used to wash utensils and other metallic items in the Sun Temple. People called “Bhilmoris” brought the plant in the city. This name was tweaked through the centuries and finally changed to Almora. King Bhishma Chand named the town Alamnagar at the time of its establishment.

In 1568, King Kalyan Chand founded Almora. Before that, no boundaries specifically marked the region. The Kauravas and the Pandavas of Mahabharata ruled the region nominally. Other than that, the local tribes were mainly responsible for ruling the region. Tribes like Sakas, Tewaris, Nagas, Katyuris, and Khasas took care of Almora and its surrounding regions for centuries. The Garhwal clan later fought with the Chand dynasty rulers, destroying some of the most beautiful parts of the city in those wars. The city mostly remained under the Gorkhas’ rule when the British occupied India but served as a vacation spot for British officials and businessmen.Today, there are plenty of Almora tourism places that attract travelers from across the world to this hilly town. Its location on a horse-saddle shaped hill and dense forests are enough to lure those looking to spend a magical vacation exploring Northern India .

Solo Trip to Almora Tourist Places: The Cozy Town at Himalaya’s Foothills!

Last Updated on April 30, 2020 by asoulwindow

Table of Contents

My Solo Trip to Almora Tourist Places

This blog is about my Solo Trip to Almora Tourist Places, a cozy town at Himalaya’s Foothills. In the month of December, I took a solo trip to a cozy district of Uttarakhand, known as Almora. I anticipated Almora to be a small town with a limited number of houses, but to my surprise, Almora was one of the busiest mountain towns that I’ve ever been to.

I found out that my ‘before’ and ‘after’ perception about Almora is wholly different. And I believe after reading this blog post, you won’t be able to hold your curiosity to visit the magical hill station that Almora is.

Solo trips are the new buzzword in the travel industry.  People from diverse demographics are embarking upon solo trips more and more. There have been many surveys done by some reputed organizations to establish this. But I’m not going to do all that. My point is, a solo trip is just another way of you pushing yourself to be courageous and take risks. And when you do this, you feel a sense of independence and belief in yourself. You realise that you are able to do so many things you yourself must have not imagined. Perhaps, that’s why it is recommended to do at least one solo trip in your lifetime.

Back in January 2018, when I took my first solo trip to Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh , I realized how important it is to be independent and that happiness can be found within, too. And my solo trip to Almora has taught me to be a better person and that feeling lost once in a while is okay.

Reaching Almora from Lucknow

I took a train, firstly because I love to travel on trains and secondly because my budget was low. To reach Almora, I had to first reach the nearest railway station to Almora from Lucknow and then, probably catch a bus or hire a taxi, whichever will be in my budget.

The nearest railway station to Almora is Kathgodam situated at a distance of approximately 82 kilometers. But the more feasible option is to reach Haldwani station which is a station before Kathgodam and lies at a distance of approximately 90 kilometers from Almora. It is feasible because the bus stand is a mere 5-minute walk away from the station. This saves you a lot of arguments from the pushy taxi and auto drivers.

I decided to take the Haldwani path. I took the train from Lucknow at midnight and reached Haldwani station roughly around 7 in the morning. I remember the weather – dark clouds, wet land and cool breeze. It seemed that Haldwani had received rainfall in the night.

I opened up Google Maps and started marching towards the bus station. On the way, I realized I was hungry. I also realized that I hadn’t taken any winter cap to cover my huge head. I was not prepared. Yup, that’s very common to me. I satiated my hunger with some snacks from the shops outside the bus station.

Snowfall on the Way

I was on the bus, half-awake as the bus snaked towards my destination Almora. With half closed eyes, I saw thick shades of fog enveloping the landscapes in all directions. The view was so serene with a sense of calm that it took my sleep away. I woke up from my stupor and looked out of the window, and someone inside the bus said that “this is the way to Nainital”.

The entire town through which our bus was passing was covered in white snow and snowfall had just stopped. It wasn’t much, but seeing a snowfall makes me go crazy. That’s what happened when I first saw the snowfall in Old Manali . Those heavenly feelings, I cannot describe!

Almora Bus Station & The Market

After almost 4 hours of bus journey and covering 90 kilometers, I finally arrived in Almora. I call it ‘The Cozy Town’, because to me everything seems to be cozy as if there’s nothing to worry about. I don’t know why I got this feeling, but that’s just me. I am not sure if you will feel that way too. But the unhurried pace of Almora didn’t take long to grow on me.

The bus dropped me to Dharanaula Bus stop and I didn’t have a single clue where to go next. The surrounding area was very busy with people walking haphazardly, locals selling peanuts and green leafy vegetables even as the soft murmurs wafted in the air. I called up my savior again and opened Google Maps.

And what did I see – my hostel, HOTs Kasar Devi, is at almost 9 km! Holy moly! Well I wasn’t in a mood of an adventure so I hurriedly called the hostel owner. The good folks at HOTs Kasar Devi advised me to take a shared cab and ask people where to get it as the taxi point is somewhere near Almora market.

I asked the sweet shop owner next to me and he told me to take left and keep going up through the lane until taxi point arrives. So I started to move up with my not-so heavy rucksack on my back. My perception about Almora had started to change – this isn’t just any town. This is Almora, a well settled and equipped town in the foothills of Himalayas .

As soon as I reached the taxi point, I couldn’t find any public taxis, only private ones. Due to lack of my patience and capability to wait more, I hired an Alto 800 for INR 300. He was a good man and started telling me the things and places I can visit in Almora and around. But my plans were different, I was here to just be here. Seriously!

Finally, the mystical Himalayas – Almora Tourist Places

It was around 1 or 2 pm when I finally reached my hostel. HOTs Kasar Devi is a youth backpackers hostel situated in a beautiful setting – right in front of snow capped Himalayas and hill ranges. When I reached, there was absolutely no one in the hostel except the two people who manage it, reason being the off-season. This however made me feel happy inside – the feeling of complete silence and solitude has its own importance.

The hostel itself is at a great height on top of a ridge. And when I climbed up, did all the chores and finally came out, I saw such scenic views that I’d probably be unable to describe them here in words. Maybe these images might help you understand? There are many Almora tourist places but the mere glimpse of snow clad mountains made my day!

There you’re. These mountains, if you keep looking at them, they’ll start telling you stories.

Places I Went To + The Slow Traveler in Me

I am a slow traveler and I believe in spending more time at a few places than hopping quickly to a number of places. There are many Almora Tourist places but I choose selectively.

I have only been to two places on this solo trip — Kasar Devi Temple and Neem Karoli Baba Temple. Rest of the time I spent with myself gazing at the great Himalayas. I’d planned it this way.

I’m not much of a religious guy but the stories behind these places attracted me. Specifically when I came to know Steve Jobs visited Neem Karoli Baba before he started the number one technology company in the world – Apple Inc.

After all, stories are what moves people. So, what are these two places and how you can get the best of them? Let’s explore the below tourist attractions in Almora!

Kasar Devi Temple – Almora Hill Station

This temple gained popularity after Swami Vivekananda came and meditated here. It is situated on what is famously known as Crank’s Ridge taking us back in the time when the Hippie movement flourished in India.

Also, according to NASA ’s study, this place is one of the three places in the world to have high concentration of magnetic fields responsible for holding Van Allen belts.

People believe this may be one of the reasons why one feels so much at peace when they come here.

These stories imbibed a sense of curiosity in me and I decided to, at least, experience this. Luckily for me, Kasar Devi temple was just 2 km walk away from my hostel. So, the first thing I did the next day in the morning, around 10, is to visit this temple.

My full expedition to Kasar Devi temple and the interesting stories behind this place is right here .

Kasar Devi Temple is indeed one of the top Almora sightseeing places.

Neem Karoli Baba Temple – Almora Sightseeing Places

Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Dan Kotke, Julia Roberts and many other high achievers visited this spiritual place in India. That makes it one of the best Almora Sightseeing Places.

Neem Karoli Baba was believed to be an avatar of Lord Hanuman and had a massive following in foreign world. His pupils even built an Ashram with the same name in Taos, New Mexico.

Baba was magical, there are many articles and documentaries available on the Internet singing the tales of his divinity. And after knowing that many notable achievers came to this place I just couldn’t hold my feet. This temple was situated between Haldwani/Kathgodam – Almora route and just in between. It is around 42 km from Haldwani.

Other Places That You Can Consider – Tourist Places Near Almora

The place my hostel is known as Kasar Devi – a town named after the Kasar Devi temple in it. And to be honest, this town gave me the feelings that I’d only felt seeing the visual effects in movies. Expect Baked brown texture, sunny days, slow breeze and a sense of calmness all around! Enjoy these Almora sightseeing places at your own pace.

That’s why here’s the list of places you should visit if you’re coming to Almora hill station . Choose according to your preferences from these tourist places near Almora:

  • Kasar Devi Temple & Village
  • Nanda Devi Temple
  • Chitai Mata Temple
  • Jageshwar Temple
  • Katarmal Sun Temple
  • Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary & Zero Point

There are also many more tourist places near Almora. You must ask your local guide for those if you have some extra time and money.

Local Sweet of Almora Hill Station

Baal Mithai is a local sweet of Almora. It is a dark brown colored sweet coated with sugar spheres all over it. Unfortunately, I forgot to click the photo as I was in a hurry but I will link one from Google Images here.

Seeing this you can imagine the rejuvenating taste of Baal Mithai. Don’t forget to try this when you go to Almora. The oldest shop is Khim Singh Mohan Singh Rautela near the petrol pump where private taxis are parked.

Return to Old Life With a New Me

If you’re a traveler, you’d agree that some places change you in ways you never expect. Traveling does something to you and it is the places like Almora which makes traveling even more deep & meaningful.

To me, Almora was a short trip but with a really big impact on me. Whenever I get mentally disturbed I tend to find places like Almora which are serene, peaceful and with all the natural beauty. This trip taught me, in many ways, that I’m full, complete and enough. That it is okay to feel lost sometimes, and that you’ll get back in form very soon. Healing power of mother nature is often underestimated.

Hope you’ve enjoyed the article. Let me know your queries or thoughts about Almora in the comment box below.

Hotels in Almora: Budget Hotels in Almora

There are many hotels in Almora depending upon your budget. Since I was on a budget trip to Almora, I didn’t choose any luxurious hotels in Almora. If you are a solo traveler on a low budget, then you can also stay in the HOTs Kasar Devi hostel as I did. I recommend it as I enjoyed my stay and views from this hostel which was as good as some other hotels in Almora and Almora Resorts. There are also many budget hotels in Almora, you can choose from.

Last Thoughts on Solo Trip To Almora: Almora Tourist Places

Almora is a friendly and safe destination for solo travelers from India and other nations. Not only is it well connected via train, bus and taxi but is also a bustling town with various modern frills you can think of. Spending some quiet time exchanging smiles with strangers or merely walking in the woods is more healing than the expensive therapies offered by ‘experts’. The presence of many hotels in Almora available in various budgets also helps! And if you are not quite a slow traveler like me, then the myriad tourist attractions in Almora will keep you busy. So, what’s stopping you from enjoying the Almora tourist places? Just book one of the hotels in Almora or just show up! And wait for the magic to unfold!

Come, lose yourself in the therapeutic air of Almora! Thank me later!

April 8's total solar eclipse—your questions answered. (Photo by: VW Pics/Universal Images Group via ... [+] Getty Images)

On April 8, 2024, North America will witness one of the most awe-inspiring natural events—a total solar eclipse. As the day approaches, everyone is asking questions about this rare celestial event.

I’ve experienced seven total solar eclipses and written thousands of articles and books about the phenomenon, interviewing virtually everyone in the eclipse community multiple times. Here are my answers to your most frequently asked questions:

What is a total solar eclipse?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes precisely between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on the planet. When you stand under the path of that shadow, also known as the path of totality, all of the sun’s rays will be blocked for a few minutes, and you’ll experience darkness during the day. If there’s a clear sky, then those inside the path of totality—and only them—will briefly see the sun’s corona with their naked eyes.

When is the next total solar eclipse in the U.S.?

The next total solar eclipse in North America will occur on Monday, April 8.

What time is the eclipse in the U.S.?

In the U.S., totality will begin in Texas at 1:27 pm CDT and end in Maine at 3:35 pm EDT—a total of 68 minutes split between two timezones.

Google Suddenly Reveals Surprise Android Update That Beats iPhone

Ukraine has developed 15 kinds of long range strike drone and sorties them against russia s oil industry, the walking dead the ones who live episode 5 review another massively disappointing episode, do i need special glasses to view the eclipse.

You will need special eclipse glasses or solar filters to view the partial phases of the eclipse safely. Regular sunglasses are not safe to use for viewing the eclipse.

Where should I buy solar eclipse glasses?

Wherever you buy eclipse glasses, you should check that the company or brand is on the American Astronomical Society’s vetted list of Suppliers of Safe Solar Filters & Viewers that all use products that adhere to the ISO 12312-2 international standard. Hurry—stocks of U.S.-made solar eclipse glasses may run low in advance of the event. Just don’t go looking for “NASA-approved solar eclipse glasses”—they do not exist!

Where can I get free eclipse glasses?

They only cost a few dollars, and it’s fine to share one pair among several people. About 13,000 public libraries in the U.S. are involved in the Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries project, giving out five million solar eclipse glasses for free , but check this interactive map to see if your local library is involved—it may not be. Other good places include science museums, planetariums, local amateur astronomy clubs, schools, universities and eclipse-observing events.

When was the last total solar eclipse?

The last total solar eclipse occurred in Western Australia, Timor Leste and Indonesia on April 20, 2023. However, the last total solar eclipse to happen in North America was on August 21, 2017. It was nicknamed the “Great American Eclipse” and crossed 12 U.S. states from Oregon to South Carolina. About 12 million people witnessed totality that day. On April 8, as many as 42 million could experience totality in Mexico, the U.S. and Canada.

What is it like to experience a total solar eclipse?

What happens during totality: the sky will turn dark, and the temperature will drop. You can remove your eclipse glasses and gaze at the sun’s spiky white corona, which becomes visible around the moon’s edges. Explosions on the sun’s surface will be seen as pink loops and towers. Stars and planets—particularly Venus—will become visible. There could even be a comet called Pons-Brooks, though only if it brightens.

What is the path of totality?

The path of totality is the area on Earth where the sun is completely blocked by the moon during the total solar eclipse. If you’re not within the path of totality, you’ll only see a partial solar eclipse.

Where is the path of totality?

On April 8, the path of totality will travel across North America from Mexico to Canada, passing through the southwest, midwest and northeast U.S. The path of totality will be about 115 miles wide and over 3,200 miles long as it moves across North America.

It will cross parts of five states in Mexico (Sinaloa, Nayarit, Durango, Coahuila and Chihuahua), 15 U.S. states (Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee (northwest corner), Michigan (southeast corner), Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine) and six Canadian Provinces (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland).

How long will the total solar eclipse last?

The total solar eclipse will last for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds, depending on your location within the path of totality. The maximum possible totality will reduce as the moon’s shadow tracks from southwest to northeast. To experience the longest possible totality in any given region, you must be on the centerline of the path of totality. Although 4 minutes 28 seconds is only possible in Mexico, Texas Hill Country will see 4 minutes and 26 seconds. Totality will reduce by a minute or so as the path of totality tracks southwest to northeast across the U.S. and Canada.

Check on this interactive map , this eclipse simulator and this eclipse look-up for details on the start and end times of the eclipse for any specific location.

How often do total solar eclipses occur?

A total solar eclipse occurs somewhere in the world about once every 18 months, on average. However, for a total solar eclipse to occur in one specific place is very rare. It’s been estimated that only one in 10,000 people ever experience a total solar eclipse.

What is the difference between a total, partial, and annular solar eclipse?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely blocks the sun’s light, a partial solar eclipse occurs when the moon only partially blocks the sun’s light, and an annular solar eclipse occurs when the moon is too far from Earth to completely block the sun’s light.

Where can I get eclipse maps?

There are so many incredible online resources to help you get yourself in the right place to see totality:

  • Xavier Jubier’s Interactive Google Map
  • Eclipse2024’s Eclipse Simulator
  • GreatAmericanEclipse.com
  • Timeanddate

What are some good places to travel to see the eclipse?

Some popular places to travel to see the April 8, 2024 solar eclipse include Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Buffalo, and Montreal.

Are there any special events planned to celebrate the eclipse?

There are thousands of events being planned to mark the eclipse, from NASA events to small community events via true luxury experiences—including eclipse flights. The best places to find out about events are:

  • The Eclipse Company
  • National Eclipse Events
  • Festival Guides & Events

Are there any NASA events for the eclipse?

NASA TV will be live streaming the eclipse from across the U.S. with confirmed plans to broadcast from the Kerrville Eclipse Festival in Kerrville, Texas, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway , Indiana, the Southern Illinois Crossroads Eclipse Festival in Carbondale, Illinois and from Total Eclipse Fest 2024 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Where is the best place to see the eclipse?

The best place to view a total solar eclipse is from somewhere in the path of totality where the sky is clear.

Where is the best weather for the eclipse?

You’ll read over and over that Mexico has the best chance of a clear sky, then Texas. It’s true, but that’s all based on historical cloud cover. During an eclipse, clouds can clear . Read Eclipsophile and check the average cloud coverage figure for April 8 this century for your location on Timeanddate so you know what to expect. But take it all with a pinch of salt until a few days before the eclipse—weather forecasts three days out are the only thing that really matters, but that “eclipse cooling” means even if it’s cloudy everywhere, you should still travel into the path.

What happens if it’s cloudy?

If you’re in the path of totality and it is cloudy during totality, the sky will darken quite dramatically (light levels will drop 10,000 times in the last few seconds before totality), animal behavior can be affected—particularly birds—and the temperature will drop. The only thing you will miss will be the chance to see the sun’s corona with your naked eyes.

Is there a live stream of the eclipse available online?

Yes, there are always live streams of solar eclipses available online for those who are unable to view the eclipse in person. Confirmed and reliable feeds on YouTube include:

  • Exploratorium
  • Discovery Channel

Why does a total solar eclipse happen?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun and completely covers the bright disk of the sun, casting a shadow onto the Earth. It’s rare because the moon’s orbit of the Earth is not the same as the sun’s path through the sky.

Are total solar eclipses rare?

The size of the moon’s shadow means a total solar eclipse is rare to witness. There are a lot of factors, including Earth’s rotational speed, that make them occur only about once every 375 years in any specific location. The U.S. is very lucky to get two total solar eclipses in seven years.

For the very latest on the total solar eclipse—including travel and lodging options— check my main feed for new articles each day.

Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.

About the guide

almora all tourist places

Exploring Moscow as a tourist can be a humbling experience. Everything is just so big. Red Square makes Piazza Navona look like a school playground, you could fit about five of Charles University into the mighty Moscow State University building, and after a trip on the Moscow Metro the London Underground seems like a dainty fairground ride. If you like feeling small, anonymous and insignificant then Moscow is definitely the place for you! Surprisingly, after you've got used to it, it feels quite liberating; and if it's adventure you're after you've come to the right place...

A natural starting point for all but the most maverick sightseer is of course Red Square . This iconic space has witnessed more than its fair share of history and is rich in surrounding attractions. The impressive fortifications of the Kremlin , Russia's seat of power, flanks the whole of one side of the Square, the magnificent GUM shopping centre flanks another, whilst St. Basil's celebrated onion domes are an essential photo opportunity on the South East end and the State Historical Museum stands guard on the North West. Easily enough to occupy anyone for day, Red Square also hosts one of the capital's more bizzare tourist attractions - Lenin's Mausoleum . A must for Commie nostalgia seekers.

If you've exhausted the attractions of 'Krasnaya Ploschad', then just a minute away by foot is another stunning space in the form of Theatre Square. Take in the magnificent Bolshoi Theatre - even better take in a performance! Afterwards head in a South Westerly direction for two more essential sites. The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts is second only to the Hermitage in terms of grandeur and style in Russia, whilst the reconstructed Church of Christ the Saviour is a majestic place of worship by the Moskva river, with it's scintillating golden-capped roofs. Venture only a little further for the zany Tsereteli Museum .

Next up on the tourist trail is the area of Kitai Gorod (literally 'China Town') - a thirteenth century trading area just East of the Kremlin, which is today characterised by its narrow streets, courtyards, pretty churches and monasteries and laidback caf, bar and club scene. An oasis of calm in a frenetic city!

A little further from the heart of Moscow, and to the West, is a comparable scenic district - the pedestrianised Old Arbat Street . Once the home of legends such as Pushkin and Tolstoy, today the region around the Arbat is probably the most touristy district in the whole of Moscow. Indeed there is a school of thought that says the area has lost much of its character, however the splendid mansions, swathes of bars and restaurants and the peddling street artists make it well worth a visit. The towering Ministry of Foreign Affairs is found overshadowing the Western end of the street, and a great introduction to Stalin's so-called Seven Sisters - seven huge Soviet skyscrapers and the most prominent features of the Moscow skyline.

Well there's the tip of the iceburg for you, but there's plenty more to see and do in Moscow . The Tretyakov Gallery , Gorky Park , the Patriarchs Ponds and the Cosmonaut Museum are all a metro ride away, whilst of course no trip to the capital is complete with sampling the legendary Moscow nightlife ... Sleaze and all!

Moscow has several hotels that call themselves "boutique" but not all of them really live up to the standard.

im doing a school project and am quite happy with this site i am disappointed however with the childish remarks being made like(faggot) this is a serious educational website and should be treated as such

I'm doing a report for a World History project at school, and this helped me choose so many wonderful sites to visit within my project. (: Great job.

9 of the best places to visit on the Amalfi Coast

These are the best places to visit in Italy's Amalfi Coast © ValerioMei / Shutterstock

The Amalfi Coast  – with its bougainvillea-draped fishing villages and rugged coastal panoramas – tops many a traveler's bucket list.

And with good reason: this 50km (31 mile) coastal stretch spanning the towns of Positano to Vietri sul Mare holds treasures ranging from colorfully tiled cathedrals to cloud-grazing hiking routes. But where to start ? Read on for our picks of the best places to visit in this stunning region of Italy .

An adult and child hold hands and gaze up towards a boutique shop at the top of a set of stone steps

1. Positano

Glitzy resort town Positano has come a long way from its humble fishing village roots, with the price tag to prove it. But even if you can't afford to stay the night – room rates often start at €350 – Positano's greatest riches are very nearly free, starting with the first sight of its pyramid-shaped cliffside expanse from the ferry.

You'll need sturdy shoes (and lungs) to explore this unique cliffside village, accessible only by climbing an endless series of staircases cut directly into rock. But you'll discover boutiques, galleries and restaurants shaded by garlands of blooms, as well as soaring coastal panoramas at the town's summit, where you can stop for an aperitivo on the terrace of the historic  Hotel Le Sirenuse and gaze down at the Gulf of Naples with a Negroni in your hand.

2. The Path of the Gods

Now put down that Negroni and lace up your boots: the Amalfi Coast is home to one of Italy's most thrilling hikes.  The Path of the Gods – il sentiero degli dei in Italian – is a 7km (4.34 mile) stretch of rosemary-perfumed Mediterranean shrubland, a staggering 630m (2065 ft) above sea level, seemingly suspended between the clouds and the earth. The trail's name comes from its mythical backstory; said to have been cut into the earth by the gods stampeding down from heaven to save Ulysses from the sirens' song.

The medium-difficulty trail has several entry and end points, but the most popular course starts in the mountain village of Agerola (Bomerano) and ends in Nocelle with a refreshing lemon slushie from the granita stand before hiking the 1700 stone steps down to Positano. Along the way you'll pass lemon groves, olive and chestnut trees and relish heavenly views of the coast.

Planning tip: Hit this trail in spring or fall or start out as early as possible during summer and winter months to beat the heat and maximize daylight. Trail shoes are a must.

A small sandy beach tucked into the crevice of cliffs

3. Furore Fjord

The "fjord" in Fiordo di Furore is a misnomer: fjords are formed by glaciers, whereas this craggy inlet was carved into the cliffs by the Schiato torrent. But the resulting secluded beach – crowned by a dramatic arched bridge – is no less otherworldly, and worth the hundreds of stone steps you'll need to hike down (and then back up) to get there. Arrive directly by boat or water taxi, or head east on the SS163 state road by car or 5070 SITA bus to the hamlet of Furore, where you'll find the staircase leading to the beach just outside the  Marisa Cuomo Winery . Your reward: a joyous pebbly beach with crystal clear waters.

Amalfi , the coast's seaside hub (and namesake), is a beautifully walkable medieval village full of boutiques, restaurants and snaking alleyways to explore. Its splendid Piazza Duomo is home to the historic pastry shop  Pasticceria Pansa and a dramatic 62-step staircase leading up to the Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea ; a 12th-Century Gothic cathedral and reliquary. Amalfi has also been a producer of artisanal paper since the 13th century as well as the region's main cultivator of Amalfi lemons.

Stroll down Via Lorenzo D'Amalfi – the main drag – to the edge of town, where you'll find Amalfi's  Museo della Carta (Paper Museum), housed in an original 13th-century paper press, as well as the  Amalfi Lemon Experience , a generational lemon grove where you can visit the town's historic lemon groves and sample artisanal limoncello.

5. Ravello

Head high up into the Lattari mountains to find romantic Ravello , with its exquisite 800-year-old villas and the most breathtaking views of the region. Just 5.7km (3.5 miles) inland from the coast, this tiny village served as a refuge from Barbarian invaders in the 5th century and has welcomed world-weary visitors ever since, from great artists like Richard Wagner and DH Lawrence to anyone hoping to escape the seaside fray.

Ravello's stone-paved streets lead from its lively main square, Piazza Duomo, to its stunning villas,  Villa Cimbrone and  Villa Rufolo . The manors were each built over several centuries; notable for their various strata of architectural embellishments as well as their beautiful gardens and coastal views. Wander through Villa Rufolo's curlicued Moorish courtyards and get lost in Villa Cimbrone's rose bushes before stopping at the Terrace of Infinity to gaze down at the Gulf of Naples from 365m (1198ft) above.

Planning tip: Ravello is especially beautiful in summer when the gardens of Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo are in bloom and the Ravello Music Festival is in full swing.

iStock-527091143-RFC.jpg

6. Vietri sul Mare

Lemon yellow, forest green and sea blue are the color palette of the Amalfi Coast. But in Vietri sul Mare – the birthplace of the exquisite hand-painted Vietri tiles adorning nearly every inch of the region – that palette explodes to rainbow intensity.

Vietri sul Mare is the coast's easternmost village and an open-air museum in every sense of the word. Wander along its main thoroughfare to find ceramics lining stairways, storefronts and alleyways in a colorful blaze. Browse its ceramics workshops where artisans are hard at work crafting vases and tableware, or the Solimene Ceramics Factory with its distinctive colorful tiled exterior. When you've crammed your suitcase full of handmade ceramics, head down to the Villa Comunale, an "urban garden" of rainbow-hued tiled steps leading down to the sea.

Planning tip: When purchasing Vietri ceramics, remember: no two pieces of true artisanal crafts are ever alike.

7. Sorrento

Seaside Sorrento is on the Sorrento Peninsula  at 30 minutes' west of Positano is technically not part of the Amalfi Coast, but its proximity makes it an easy, and obligatory, detour. Yes, it's crawling with tourists, but you'll also find layers of Ancient Greek, Roman, medieval, Renaissance and Baroque architecture as well as a thriving cultural scene.

Piazza Tasso is Sorrento's beating heart, adjacent to the town's cobblestoned ancient quarter with its enclaves of artisanal woodworking shops. Stroll past grand villas and through the lush gardens of Villa Comunale overlooking the Gulf of Naples, then peruse art exhibits at the Chiostro di San Francesco with its tranquil ivy-covered courtyard. Cap things off with an oceanfront dinner at Marina Piccola pier or  O'Parrucchiano La Favorita , where you can dine in a lemon grove strung with fairy lights.

Planning tip: Sorrento is the birthplace of limoncello, but skip the mass produced offerings and head to the  Giardini di Cataldo lemon grove, which produces 100% artisanal limoncello right in the city center.

8. Bagni Regina Giovanna

The words "swimming hole" and "Ancient Roman villa" rarely go together, except at the Bagni Regina Giovanna – found 3.6km (2.2 miles) west of Sorrento. Once the seaside escape of the Roman nobleman Pollio Felix, today the 1st century villa's sunken ruins serve as a natural swimming hole where ecstatic bathers dive off the villa's rooftop into the Gulf of Naples; a 46m (150ft) drop. The atmosphere is pure Pagan joy and utterly unforgettable.

Planning tip: Only visit here if you're in peak physical condition. The 600m-long (1969ft) cobblestoned path leading to the villa is extremely uneven, to say nothing of the ruins themselves – crumbling and punctuated by precipitous drops.

9. Baia di Ieranto

Also on the Sorrento Peninsula, this wow-worthy secluded cliff beach is a 45-minute hike from the village of Nerano. The trek starts out gentle but ramps up to medium intensity in the last 15 minutes, leading you down a rocky slope to reach the bay with an amazing view of the faraglioni (rock towers) of Capri . The vibe is sheer bliss, interrupted only by thrill seekers diving off the cliffs. The Sorrento Peninsula – particularly the Baia di Ieranto bay – is believed to be the land of Homer's mermaids, so keep watch.
