Pink Lake WA: Guide to Visiting Hutt Lagoon (2024)

Hutt Lagoon is one of the best pink lakes of Australia. Located five hours north of Perth, Hutt Lagoon Western Australia has become famous thanks to its popularity on Instagram. Read on for all you need to know about visiting the strawberry pink lake near Kalbarri, the most accessible pink lake in Western Australia.

Best Time to Visit Hutt Lagoon

You can visit Hutt Lagoon all year round!

The best time to visit this pink lake in Australia is between 10am – 2pm on a sunny day. This is when the lake is at its most vivid level of “pinkness”.

Visiting on a cloudy day it will still be pink though – I personally think seeing the clouds reflected in the pink waters is a pretty special sight too!

Another thing to note is that in summer the lake tends to have less water in it. It may be more dried up near the shoreline which might make pictures harder. It looks amazing to see the crusty pink salt from above on the drone though!

The photos in this blog are from my visits to Hutt Lagoon in September 2020. The timing was perfect because we could combine the trip with a visit to see the wildflowers in the region .

I also visited Hutt Lagoon in April 2022 as part of our road trip to Kalbarri along the Coral Coast . On both visits, there was a similar amount of water and “pinkness” to the lake.

How to get to Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake

The easiest way to get to Hutt Lagoon WA is via car.

Perth to Hutt Lagoon is about a 5 hour drive via the Indian Ocean Drive coastal highway. You can get to Hutt Lagoon (Australia) with a 2WD car. The roads are all sealed on the drive from Perth.

I recommend hiring a car in Perth , as there is a larger range of hire options and cheaper than hiring in the regional towns near the Pink Lake.

Another option is to get a short flight from Perth to Geraldton, and hire a car in Geraldton. Due to high flight prices, I recommend doing the longer drive from Perth unless you are really short on time.

Hutt Lagoon is the closest pink lake to Perth . Pink Lake Hutt Lagoon is too far to be comfortably enjoyed as a day trip, so you will need to make it an overnight trip, or part of a longer road trip to see some of the unique attractions along the coast from Perth to Exmouth .

When visitors think of a Western Australia Pink Lake, the one that might come to mind is another pink lake WA near Esperance. This is Lake Hillier , and is located on a remote archipelago of islands near Esperance and requires a scenic flight to get to.

In short, it’s not easy to get to and it’s expensive.

Pink Lake Tour

You can join a guided tour to see the Pink Lake, departing from Perth.

This 2-day tour visits Pink Lake twice! This gives you the chance to see it at two different times of the day (sunset and mid-morning).

It also includes stops like sand boarding in Lancelin , viewing the Natural Bridge of Kalbarri Coastal Cliffs and the instagrammable Natures Window in Kalbarri National Park.

The tour finishes with a stop at the Pinnacles Desert, giving you a highlights tour of some of the best attractions along the Coral Coast.

Another popular Pink Lake Tour is this 3 day, 2-night tour with a Chinese speaking guide. This trip includes a delicious lobster feast and stops to the Pinnacles, Leaning Tree Greenough, Nature’s Window, sand boarding in Lancelin. It also includes a visit to see the Pink Lake as well as a scenic flight over the lake.

Check booking availability on Klook here.

Accommodation near Hutt Lagoon

The best place for pink lake accommodation is to stay at nearby in the towns of Geraldton or Kalbarri .

Geraldton has the largest range of accommodation options for all budgets from caravan parks, motels, hotels and serviced apartments. From Geraldton, pink lake is a further one hour drive north.

Read my Perth to Kalbarri Road Trip guide for a suggested 5 day itinerary, including visiting Hutt Lagoon.

Kalbarri is a smaller town, but has more to do for tourists than Geraldton thanks to its proximity to the acclaimed Kalbarri National Park .

This National Park is home to the Kalbarri Skywalk , Natures Window (one of WA’s most recognisable landmarks !) and some adventurous hikes.

From Kalbarri to Hutt Lagoon it is a 35 minute drive. Kalbarri is a better choice over Geraldton if you want to stay closest to the Pink Lake.

Accommodation choices may be limited though, you will need to book in advance as its a popular place to visit (particularly in the Australian winter from June – August).

Places to Stay in Kalbarri:

  • Budget – Kalbarri Palm Resort Value for money, family friendly hotel/motel accommodation only 10 minutes walk from the beach
  • Mid-Range – Kalbarri Edge Resort Centrally located hotel with options for smaller studios or suites with kitchenette.
  • Luxury – River Retreats Kalbarri Adult only accommodation with outdoor swimming pool.

Places to Stay in Geraldton:

  • Budget – Geraldton Motor Inn I stayed here our first trip to Geraldton. The rooms are dated, but clean and it was very well priced. Just what we needed for a one night stay.
  • Mid-Range – Nightcap at Wintersun Hotel I’ve also stayed here – it’s a basic motel but the rooms are large and there is an outdoor pool and pub next door.
  • Luxury – The Gerald Apartment Hotel 200 metres from Town Beach with modern studio and apartment style accommodation

Why is Hutt Lagoon Pink?

Hutt Lagoon is strawberry pink due the presence of the algae dunaliella salina. This algae is a food colouring agent and used in cosmetics and dietary supplements.

Hutt Lagoon is used as a microalgae production plant and produces brine shrimp, using in prawn farming.

The colour of the lake can be impacted by how much algae is blooming, but it almost always the bright pink colour you see in pictures.

What to Bring on a Trip to WA’s Pink Lake

Make sure you bring lots of water, your camera, bathers (if you’d like to take a dip!), floatie, drone and anything else you need to capture the stunning pink hues.

I also took my reef booties to protect my feet from the sharp salt crystals when wading in to the lake.

I didn’t go fully in because its SO salty (and to be honest, a little bit smelly!) – and we had a 5 hour drive home back to Perth.

If you do decide to go in, make sure you have a towel to wipe yourself down after before getting back in the car.

Entry to Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake

Visiting Hutt Lagoon is absolutely free! The spot to park is the “ Pink Lake Lookout ” on Port Gregory Drive and is one of the best vantage points to access the lake.

Walk around to the left to get away from the small groups of people gathering around the cark parking spot. This is the best spot for Hutt Lagoon pink lake photos.

There are a few spots to pull over George Grey Drive for a little bit more of a walk to the lake (and we encountered some big mud patches on the walk to the water’s edge so watch out!)

There aren’t any facilities out here, so please make sure take any rubbish with you.

Pink Lake Hutt Lagoon

What to Do at the Pink Lake

Other than stare at the pink water and say “wow” a lot…. most of our time at the lake was spent exploring a few different view points of it, taking photos and flying the drone.

For a fun activity at Pink Lake, join a Pink Lake Buggy Tour! This small group buggy tour takes you over sand dunes and to different vantage points around the lake.

The local tour guide shares the history and heritage of Hutt Lagoon and the surrounding area. Click here for prices and booking availability.

Another fun thing to do is to go for a scenic flight from Kalbarri or Geraldton to see the lake in all its bubblegum goodness from above.

  • Check flight availability from Kalbarri
  • Check flight availability from Geraldton

Can You Swim in Hutt Lagoon?

You can swim in the pink lake, although the water is very salty and it isn’t the most pleasant experience.

I personally wouldn’t put my head under the water either – the floatie is the best option here in my opinion!

If you keep driving past Pink Lake, you will come to the very small town of Port Gregory (hence why it is sometimes referred to as Port Gregory pink lake). There isn’t a lot to do here, but there is a small caravan park and a beach you can swim at.

It can get very windy on the coast here, but the beach is in a protected bay which should offer some shelter from the wind.

Hutt Lagoon, Kalbarri: Complete Guide to Visiting the Pink Lake

' src=

Hutt Lagoon in Western Australia is one of the best pink lakes in the country. With its natural pink hues, it’s a popular spot for both the scenery and capturing incredible imagery. It’s located along Australia’s Coral Coast near Kalbarri attracting tourists from all over the world.

Read on for all you need to know about visiting WA’s pink lake: Hutt Lagoon.

By making a purchase, you are directly supporting and allowing me to continue providing you with free high-quality travel content .  Thank you for supporting this blog!

Best time to Visit Hutt Lagoon

In order to see the lake at its pinkest, you need to visit Hutt Lagoon when the sun is out and at its highest. This is generally between 10am-2pm.

The water looks even more stunning on a day where there is little to no wind, creating strawberry milk looking water. So if you’re staying in the area, make sure to check the wind forecast before you schedule your visit.

It’s important to note that during the summer months the water can dry up, making it harder to capture imagery from the shoreline. However, if you happen to be in the area during this time of year still come visit as it’s incredible to see regardless!

How to get to Hutt Lagoon, WA

The easiest way to get to Hutt Lagoon is via car.

As all roads leading towards Hutt Lagoon are sealed, a 2WD will suffice for visiting the pink lake.

If you’re travelling Western Australia from overseas or interstate and need to hire a car for your trip, I’d recommend hiring a car in Perth to get out to Hutt Lagoon.

You could also consider flying out to Geraldton and hiring a car from there. However, as flights to Geraldton are quite expensive I wouldn’t recommend this route, especially as you’d need to hire a car anyways (and Geraldton is only a 4 hour drive from Perth),

Perth to Hutt Lagoon

Hutt Lagoon is located approximately 5 hours north of Perth Western Australia, via the Indian Ocean Drive coastal highway. As it is quite a distance, I wouldn’t recommend visiting on a day trip.

However, if you’re r oad tripping along Australia’s Coral Coast both Hutt Lagoon and the K albarri National Park are definitely worth a little detour.

Geraldton to Hutt Lagoon

If you have chosen to fly into Geraldton or are just looking to visit Hutt Lagoon from Geraldton, your drive will take you just over 1 hour, one-way.

Kalbarri to Hutt Lagoon

Kalbarri is the most common place for people visiting Hutt Lagoon to stay. Hutt Lagoon is only a 30 minute drive from the town of Kalbarri, making it the ideal location to find accommodation on your visit to the pink lake.

There are also plenty of things to do in and around the town of Kalbarri , making it a great place to spend your family holiday.

Tours of Hutt Lagoon

Another way to get to Hutt Lagoon is to jump on a tour that includes the pink lake in the schedule!

Departing from Perth, this 2-day tour includes a stop over at the pink lake, sand boarding in Lancelin, the Pinnacles, the Kalbarri Skywalk and fresh lobster.

Also departing from Perth, the 3-day tour has a similar itinerary to the 2-day tour with the inclusion of the elevated experience of a scenic flight over the pink lake!

Another popular Pink Lake Tour is this 3 day, 2-night tour that includes a Chinese speaking guide. On this trip you’ll get to feast on delicious lobster and stop at the Pinnacles, Nature’s Window, go sand boarding in Lancelin and more! It also includes a visit to see the Pink Lake as well as a scenic flight over the lake.

Check booking availability here.

If you’re looking to explore even more of Australia’s Coral Coast, then you may want to consider this 4 day tour coastal experience that heads as far north as Monkey Mia. The tour will take you through many highlights of the coastline including the infamous pink lake, Kalbarri National Park and Numbung National Park (the Pinnacles).

Accommodation near Hutt Lagoon

The closest places to stay near Hutt Lagoon are either Geraldton (1hr away) or Kalbarri (30 min away).

Geraldton has the most options for accommodation as it is a city, rather than a small coastal town like Kalbarri. Therefore it has a plenty of options including hotels, caravan parks, motels and appartments to accommodate a range of budgets.

On the other hand, Kalbarri is a small town but has plenty of attractions for tourists due to its close proximity to the renowned Kalbarri National Park , home to the incredible Kalbarri Skywalk! If you choose to stay in Kalbarri, you may want to book well in advance as there are fewer accommodation options available.

Personally, I’d recommend staying in Kalbarri for both its closer proximity to the pink lake as well as the other incredible attractions the area has to offer!

Kalbarri Accommodation

  • Kalbarri Palm Resort   ($): Located just a 10 minute walk from the beach, Kalbarri Palm Resort has 2 pools, a hot tub and a tennis court.
  • Kalbarri Sea Front Villas  ($$): Kalbarri Seafront Villas offers holiday accommodation in various forms. Some villas even have views over the river and ocean! Guests can enjoy the outdoor swimming pool and BBQ areas.
  • Murchison View Appartments ($$): Murchison View Apartments feature an outdoor pool and a barbecue area for guests to use. all appartments include a full kitchen, bathroom and spacious lounge area.
  • Kalbarri Edge Resort ($$): Kalbarri Edge Resort is just 5 minutes’ walk from the Murchison River with a solar-heated pool and BBQ facilities.

Hutt Lagoon Camping

There is no camping available at Hutt Lagoon. If you’d like to camp, the closest campgrounds to the pink lake are:

  • Lucky Bay Shacks
  • Lynton Station
  • Port Gregory Caravan Park

Each of these camping options are located within a 15 minute drive to the pink lake. The facilities they offer and price range will vary.

Why is Hutt Lagoon Pink?

Hutt Lagoon is so pink due to algae that live in the water, dunaliella salina. When this particular algae is exposed to sunlight it produces beta-carotene, the same red pigment that is found in carrots and other veggies.

Depending on the season, time of day and amount of cloud coverage, Hutt Lagoon can change from appearing red to pink and even to purple.

perth to hutt lagoon tour

What to Bring to Hutt Lagoon

I’d highly recommend taking along your camera, as well as a drone if you have one. You can also take your bathers and a floatie or anything else you’d need to capture the stunning pink lake.

You should also have plenty of water and some food as Hutt Lagoon is quite a distance from the nearest store.

If you plan on walking through the water, I’d recommend taking along some water shoes as the salt levels in the water can make the ground extremely sharp.

Just note, there are no facilities at Hutt Lagoon so make sure to take any of your rubbish home with you!

Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake Entry

Hutt Lagoon is completely free to see and enter!

The Pink Lake Lookout is located along Port Gregory Drive with areas to park up and see the link from a great vantage point. If you head to the left of the lookout, you’ll be able to escape any crowds.

You can also get to the pink lake from along Gregory Grey drive. However, this can be a bit of a longer walk and depending on the time of year you may encounter mud patches.

What to do at Hutt Lagoon

Whether you’d like to stop past and just spend a few minutes admiring the views or head out on a walk, Hutt Lagoon in itself is an incredible attractions worth seeing.

If you’re making a trip out to see Hutt Lagoon specifically, you may want to consider packing a picnic lunch to enjoy while you take in the scenery.

You can also book a fun buggy tour that explores Hutt Lagoon and Port Gregory. The tour is just over 1 hour long and will provide you with access to areas that cars can’t get to.

Check Buggy Tour availability here.

Another incredible thing to do at Hutt Lagoon is enjoy a scenic flight over the pink lake:

  • Check scenic flights from Kalbarri
  • Check scenic flights from Geraldton

Photography at Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake

One of the best things to do at Hutt Lagoon is to take out your camera and capture the incredible pink lake. As the lake is at its pinkest in the middle of the day, you’ll need to embrace shooting in the bright sunlight. I have a whole blog post with ti ps on taking incredible photos bright sunlight.

To get an interesting perspective on the lake, use a drone to take your photo from above! Unfortunately we haven’t had the opportunity to fly our drone here yet, but if you’re looking to see examples of what you could capture then look no further than Hutt Lagoon on instagram for plenty of inspiration.

Can you swim at Hutt Lagoon?

While technically you can swim at Hutt Lagoon, considering the high levels of algae in the water I would advise against it. Also, as the water is very salty, I can’t imagine it would be a very nice experience.

If you choose to swim, wether that’s for a photo or the experience, I’d recommend using a floatie to help keep your head out of the water.

If you’re looking for somewhere else to swim, there is a beach at Port Gregory (near the caravan park) to swim at.

A popular tourist attraction, definitely worth visiting, Hutt Lagoon is well worth visiting for its incredible pink water. You’ll find it’s just as pink in person as it is in the photos (if not even more vividly pink, depending on when you visit!)

Hutt Lagoon is about a 5 hour drive away from Perth, making it unsuitable for a day trip.

Hutt Lagoon is about a 1hr drive away from Geraldton.

Hutt Lagoon is about a 30min drive away from the town of Kalbarri.

Technically yes, however I would advise against it due to the high levels of algae and salt in the water.

Either Kalbarri or Geraldton.

No, the closest campground to Hutt Lagoon is Port Gregory Caravan Park.

When the sun is at its highest and brightest, from around 10am-2pm. You can visit year round, although there may be less water during the summer months.

Western Australia is big.

I feel like I’m rather stating the obvious here – look at any map and you’ll see that WA takes up a third of Australia .

However, you don’t quite get the scope for just how big it is, until you take a Perth to Kalbarri road trip . It’s a tiny section on a map of Australia, but a six hour drive with some phenomenal sights along the way.

This particular itinerary will take you along what’s known as the ‘Indian Ocean Drive’. It’s named such, as you spend most of the trip driving adjacent to the ocean, along Australia’s coral coast.

Although there are plenty of things to do in Perth alone, you won’t regret getting out and exploring some of this stunning state.

When is the best time to drive from Perth to Kalbarri?

The best time to do this trip is from June to October , as this is wildflower season in Western Australia . The weather will be nice and the state at its most prettiest.

Autumn from March to May is also a glorious time to visit, with decent weather.

However, the Perth to Kalbarri route is drive-able anytime of the year. Keep in mind summer will be scorching hot, but there’s plenty of beaches to cool off in along the way.

Discover the best time to visit Australia , which may help with your trip planning.

National Parks in Western Australia

This road trip itinerary will take you to several national parks, many of which cost to enter.

Consider purchasing a 5 Day Holiday Park Pass , which gives you unlimited entry to national parks for just $25.

Order it online, print a copy and leave it on your dashboard, as you explore WA’s phenomenal natural beauty.

The Pinnacles Desert, inside Nambung National Park.

Day 1: Perth to Cervantes

Distance of 224 kilometres/139 miles & driving time of 2 hours and 35 minutes.

Let’s get this road trip started. Day one will see you drive from Perth to the town of Cervantes .

What to see along the way

The two stops on this part of your Perth to Kalbarri road trips are Lancelin (primarily for its sand dunes) and the Pinnacle Desert Discovery Centre , to see some wickedly cool rock formations (not shortage of these on this road trip).

Love sand boarding? Then you’ll love Lancelin. The town is known for its crisp white dunes and lovely beaches.

Rent a sandboard ahead of time , to pick up from a location in town. It’s $12.50 for up to 2.5 hours. If you plan on making a return trip for boarding, you can purchase your own .

Along with sand boarding, you can jump on quad bike tours of the dunes, hang ten on some awesome waves or stand up paddleboard to your heart’s content.

The Pinnacles

This is a must-see stop on your Perth to Kalbarri road trip.

The Pinnacles Desert, located within Nambung National Park, is a top Western Australia attraction and for good reason.

These limestone structures were formed between 25000-30000 years ago, due to receding sea levels. Coastal winds blew away the surrounding sand, leaving these giant pillars – some of which tower at 3.5 metres.

While they’re worth seeing anytime of day, they’re pretty amazing at night, against the backdrop of a starry sky.

If you’re not driving, you can jump on a tour from Perth to take in the Pinnacles and go sand boarding at Lancelin.

Lake Thetis

While you’re in the area, head to Lake Thetis to check out its ancient stromatolites or ‘living fossils’. These rock-like structures have been built by micro-organisms, which resemble the earliest forms of life on earth. How’s that for history.

Stretch your legs around a 1.5 kilometre loop trail, and learn about the geology and Indigenous culture of the area.

Other things to do in Cervantes

Cervantes is located at the start of the Coral Coast, a route that travels up the shoreline of Western Australia. If you’re looking to spend more time in this seaside town, here are some other points of interest:

  • drop into Hangover Bay for a swim, surf or snorkel
  • or head to the eponymous Cervantes Beach
  • feast on lobster among other delicious seafood at Lobster Shack
  • tour the Lobster Shack factory or in the warmer months, go say hey to the local Seal Lion population
  • head to Cervantes from August to October to see wildflowers . The best displays are at Nambung National Park , Lesueur National Park , Badgingarra National Park , Tathra National Park and Stockyard Gully Reserve , which is also known for its unique limestone caves.

Where to stay in Cervantes

Cervantes is not a big place and accommodation options are somewhat limited. If you plan on staying in the area, make sure you book in advance.

Book into an apartment at Cervantes Holiday Homes . You can also grab a room or use the campsite at RAC Cervantes Holiday Park . The RAC Holiday Park in particular is great for all kinds of travellers, offering villas, caravan sites and campsites.

Day 2: Cervantes to Dongara/Port Denison

Distance of 159 kilometres/98 miles & driving time of 1 hour and 43 minutes.

With day one of your Perth to Kalbarri road trip done and dusted, day two will bring some equally gorgeous sights.

Top spots along this leg of the trip include Lesueur National Park and the small town of Jurien Bay .

Lesueur National Park

Make a stop at this national park if its wildflower season and well, you want to see an array of colourful flora.

There’s a cool 900 plant species here, some of which are endemic to Western Australia.

Although it’s at its most vibrant in spring, the park is great place to visit year round. There’s walking trails to explore – take the 4 kilometre trail to the top of Mount Lesueur and wave hi to the ocean. Keep an eye out for the birds and reptiles who call this area home.

Lesueur can also be explored by car, via the Lesueur Scenic Drive, making it accessible for people with a disability.

Note there is an entry fee of $15 for your average sized car. However, there’s certainly enough to do within the park to make this a highlight of your Perth to Kalbarri road trip.

This laid back seaside town is a popular day trip from Perth. It’s home to the second largest jetty in Western Australia (stretching out at 162 metres) and plenty of outdoor adventures.

The area is popular for snorkelling, diving, windsurfing and fishing (although this is restricted in some parts).

I reckon the main boon is the chance to spot Australian Sea Lions. They’re super cute, seem as fun as dolphins and live only around the waters of Western Australia and South Australia.

Increase your chances of seeing sea lions by booking on a tour. Try Turquoise Safaris , Sea Lion Charters or Jurien Bay Oceanic Experience .

Things to do in Dongara

Dongara is the perfect stopover after an action-packed day.

You can stretch your legs along the Heritage Walk, a 4 kilometre track which highlights the town’s historic buildings.

Other things to do in Dongara and Port Denison include:

  • watch the sunset from Granny’s Beach
  • see the Big Western Rock Lobster , which is located on the Brand Highway
  • visit Russ Cottage , built in the late 1860s
  • pop into Illegal Tender Rum Distillery . If you time it right, you can take a distillery tour.

Where to stay in Dongara & Port Denison

It’s a short drive today. Stop in a historic settlement to stretch your legs, then spend the remainder of your time exploring Geraldton . If you have time, take a tour to the magnificent Abrolhos Islands or a scenic flight over Hutt Lagoon , to take in its pink hues.

This is a village that has been preserved as it was in the 1800s.

Eleven buildings are open to the public, including the town’s first school and a beautiful church.

If you love your trains, be sure to check out the Walkaway Station Museum while you’re there.

There are tearooms in the town where you can stop for a cuppa. Or drop into the The Hampton Arms Inn for a meal.

An entry fee is required to explore the town, which is $10 for an adult at the time of writing.

Things to do in Geraldton

Did you know Geraldton is the windsurfing capital of Australia? This is a very cool title to have.

Other things to do in Geraldton include:

Viewing the HMAS Sydney II Memorial

The HMAS Sydney II Memorial honours 645 Australians wrecked off the Western Australian coast during World War II, along with the HSK Kormoran. Both wrecks remained hidden until they were located in March 2008.

There’s daily free tours of the memorial, starting at 10.30am.

Visit the Abrolhos Islands

This archipelago is located 60 kilometres west of Geraldton and consists of 122 islands, known as the Wallabi Group, Easter Group and Pelsaert Group.

It’s said to have biodiversity that rivals the Galapagos Islands. They’re a marine haven and there’s plenty of things to do while visiting.

You can go swimming, snorkelling, diving and bird watching. You’ll quite possible sea sea lions, dolphins and Tammar Wallabies.

The islands can be accessed via a day trip on the Abrolhos Adventures Fast Ferry .

Or you can jump on a tour that takes you to the island via an organised charter flight.

Alternatively, take an aerial sightseeing tour of the islands from Geraldton. You will have the option to land on one of the islands for morning or afternoon tea.

Take a scenic flight over Hutt Lagoon

Likewise, you can take an aerial tours of the pink Hutt Lagoon from Geraldton.

I’ve seen it from the ground, which is a fantastic experience in itself. However, gazing at those vibrant colours from the sky would be something else. Check out tour prices and departure times .

Tick both off the bucket list with a flight that takes you over Hutt Lagoon and to the Abrolhos Islands. What a day. Book onto this spectacular sightseeing tour .

Check out the Museum of Geraldton

Sat next to the Indian Ocean, the Museum of Geraldton has as lot to offer.

The Shipwrecks Gallery has archaeological treasures from four Dutch shipwrecks. You can also watch a 3D film which features the wrecks of HMAS Sydney II and HSK Kormoran, still lying on the floor of the ocean.

You can also learn more about local Yamaji culture and history and about the surrounding natural landscapes and marine life.

Entry is free, with donations accepted.

Tour the Yamaji Drive Trail

If you’re keen to extend your trip and see more of what Geraldton’s surrounds have to offer, jump on the Yamaji Drive Trail .

195 kilometres long, the trail travels through 14 sites of significance to local Aboriginal people (the Wilunyu People and the Yamaji People).

There’s historic sites, the towns of Greenough and Mullewa and as you can image, some gorgeous natural landscapes to see along the way.

Where to stay in Geraldton

Stay beachfront at the Ocean Centre Hotel , keep within your budget at Geraldton Backpackers or enjoy a kooky night within the eclectic Zebra Guesthouse .

The small town of Northampton with its painted fibreglass sheep.

Day 4: Geraldton to Kalbarri

Distance of 156 kilometres /96 miles & driving time of 1 hour & 46 minutes.

This the last leg of your Perth to Kalbarri trip, before heading back to the city (or continuing on north to Monkey Mia and beyond).

Explore the fibreglass sheep of Northampton , snap photos from the ground of Hutt Lagoon and take in excellent views of Murchison River Gorge at Kalbarri National Park .

The sheep of Northampton

Northampton is a small town you drive through, on the way to Kalbarri from Geraldton.

It’s notable for the painted fibreglass sheep arranged around town , a product of the local Ewe-Turn Festival.

There’s a walking trail you can follow through the town, which will lead you to the various sheep. Drop into the Visitor Centre to find out more.

Horrocks Beach

This is considered to be one of the top mainland beaches in Australia, and so is definitely worth a stop off on your Perth to Kalbarri road trip.

The beach stretches seven kilometres along the Coral Coast. There’s off-the-grid beachside camping sites at Little Bay.

You’ll also find rock art in Willigully Caves, describing the traditions and culture of the local Nhanda people.

  • Hutt Lagoon

This is the main draw card of any Perth to Kalbarri trip.

Australia’s biggest pink lake is located at Port Gregory.

It’s around 70 square kilometres in size and is separated from the ocean by dunes.

The pink hue is the result of carotenoid-producing algae. The colour changes depending on the time of the day, season and the amount of cloud cover present when you visit.

It transitions from red, to bubblegum pink, to purple. The best time to visit is the middle of the day, when it’s at its most vibrant.

If you’re after aerial views and photos of the lake, you can take a sightseeing flight from Kalbarri .

On this particular route, you used to be able to dip inland to visit the Principality of Hutt River , which was Australia’s first micronation. Unfortunately, the Principality closed its borders in 2020.

I dropped in during 2019 and wrote an account of what it was like to visit . The fact that this Principality even existed is one of the weirdest facts about Perth and Western Australia .

Things to do in Kalbarri

Kalbarri’s main attraction is the eponymous national park.

There’s plenty to see and do here, with some experiences unlike any others in Australia.

Kalbarri National Park

There’s a lot to see in Kalbarri National Park. It’s a true hidden gem of Australia.

If you’re heading to the national park, be sure to:

  • check out Kalbarri Skywalk , which offers incredible views of Murchison River Gorge. Jump on a tour with an expert guide to learn more
  • head to ‘Z Bend’ lookout , over a section of the Murchison River. It’s named such, due to the Z bend created by the river flowing through the gorges. There’s a few trails you can hike in the area, too
  • Nature’s Window is a natural rock arch, formed from layers of sandstone
  • Island Rock and Natural Bridge are solitary sea stacks, similar to the Twelve Apostles in Victoria. Between July and October, you may see whales from the lookouts
  • The Loop Walk is an 8 kilometre hike which takes you along the edge of cliffs, the down to the river bank. It’s recommended you avoid doing this walk in hot weather and it’s closed from November to March, for this reason.

And as you may have guessed, the park is spectacular during wildflower season.

You can self-explore the park, or see its highlights on a tour with a knowledgeable guide .

Take a day tour to Monkey Mia

If you’re keen to go a little further north but don’t want to do the drive, you can take a half day tour from Kalbarri to Monkey Mia and Shark Bay .

As is standard in this part of the world, astounding natural beauty awaits and you may see the wild Monkey Mia dolphins from the beach. Bonza.

Where to stay

On a budget? Spend the night at Kalbarri Palm Resort . For something a little more up-market, sleep at Kalbarri Edge Resort .

Looking back at Perth's skyline from Elizabeth Quay.

Day 5: return to Perth

Distance of 576 kilometres /358 miles & driving time of 6 hours and 17 minutes.

Your trip from Perth to Kalbarri is complete. Now you can either turn around and head back to Perth (stopping at any other places of interest along the way), or continue up the Coral Coast.

Depending on how you wish to approach Perth, you can travel down the coast then turn onto the Brand Highway just south of Dongara and Port Denison.

Short on time?

If time is of essence, we recommend prioritising the following on your Perth to Kalbarri road trip:

  • Lancelin Sand Dunes
  • the Pinnacles Desert
  • Kalbarri National Park .

Traveller’s Guide To The Pink Lake In Kalbarri, WA (Hutt Lagoon)

The pink lake in Kalbarri is one of many must-stops on any trip to Western Australia’s Coral Coast. Also known as “Hutt Lagoon”, this unique salt lake has vibrant, otherworldly, pink-coloured water!

What makes the lake so pink? This is due to an algae known as “Dunaliella Salina”. When exposed to sunlight, the algae produces beta-carotene – the same red pigment found in carrots!

It’s present in waters with high saline levels, giving it the signature bubblegum pink colour (or even red/purple colour).

perth to hutt lagoon tour

The hypersaline waters don’t make for a great swim … But they do make for stunning pictures! The floor of the salt lake is crystalised and can feel scratchy on your feet though, so bring reef shoes if you want to get in.

The best time of the day for photography is usually between 10 am to 2 pm, as it’s the brightest time of day. But the colours change depending on the season. We will discuss that and more below!

Everything you need to know – Hutt Lagoon Kalbarri

perth to hutt lagoon tour

How do you get to the Pink Lake in Kalbarri?

Hutt Lagoon (Pink Lake) is a 70-square km lake in Port Gregory, a town about 30 minutes south of Kalbarri , through George Grey Drive. The only thing that separates it from the Indian Ocean is a beach barrier ridge and a barrier dune system.

Port Gregory’s Hutt Lagoon is the nearest pink lake to Perth (there are more than 10 pink lakes in Australia!), a 5.5-hour drive north of Perth.

It’s free to visit Hutt Lagoon. Once there, you’ll drive around the lake and park in the lookout bay . There are no facilities though, so come prepared.

perth to hutt lagoon tour

When is the best time to visit Pink Lake? (Hutt Lagoon Kalbarri)

The best time to visit Pink Lake is in the spring or summer .

Typically, the algae that causes the pink colour is found in higher concentrations in warmer months. Spring/Summer may therefore be your best bet to see Hutt Lagoon in its glory!

Also, it’s best to visit on a clear, sunny day, with little to no clouds. You can also visit on a cloudy day, but the colour won’t be as intense.

Accommodation and camping at Hutt Lagoon

You can’t camp at Hutt Lagoon and there aren’t free campsites around either. But there are a few awesome spots where you can stay nearby:

Kalbarri town

There are several places you can stay in Kalbarri, from campsites to hotels and everything in between. We recommend staying in this town if you also want to explore the Kalbarri National Park!

We wrote a whole guide with the best places to stay in Kalbarri, check it out here !

perth to hutt lagoon tour

Port Gregory Caravan Park

This is your best (and only) bet if you want to stay right at the lakefront.

It’s a family-owned caravan park with 10 cabins and 80 powered sites. You’ll stay between the lake and the Indian Ocean, each one at a 5-minute walk. It doesn’t get any better than that!

Horrocks Beach Caravan Park

Horrocks is a small coastal town, 30 minutes south of Hutt Lagoon. It’s an epic beachfront stay with cabins and camping sites (powered and unpowered).

Being right next to 3 Miles Beach makes it absolutely worth it on its own. But if you have a 4WD, you can go for a 10-minute drive to check out the mindblowing Little Bay during your stay!

Little Bay Campsite (4WD only)

This campground is also in Horrocks, and it’s a truly hidden gem. It’s a beachfront campsite where you can do some boating, fishing, and snorkelling. There are massive dunes too, so bring your boogie board!

There are no bookings available (first come, first serve) and there’s a fee of $15 per car/per night, collected daily by a ranger.

Lucky Bay Shacks (4WD only)

Not to be confused with Esperance’s Lucky Bay – you won’t find any kangaroos in Kalbarri’s Lucky Bay. This awesome campground is 15 minutes north of Hutt Lagoon.

Much like Little Bay, you can do boating, fishing, and snorkelling. It’s also “first come, first serve”, with a $15 fee per night.

perth to hutt lagoon tour

Best time of the day for the most stunning photos

Photos showing the bright pink usually are taken on a clear day, between 10 am and 2 pm – this is when the sun is at its brightest.

If there’s cloud cover, it really pays off to be patient and wait for them to move a bit, letting the sun shine onto the lake. That said, clouds reflecting on the lake also make for gorgeous pictures!

Go to the lookout to see Pink Lake from a higher vantage point. Make sure you bring a floatie and picnic for your visit to Pink Lake!

Other ways to see the Pink Lake in Kalbarri

Undoubtedly, the best views of the lake are from above.

There are scenic flights of Hutt Lagoon starting from Kalbarri and Geraldton. As you fly over the lake, you’ll hear commentary from your guide, explaining the geography and pointing out key landmarks of the area, among other things.

If you want to fly from Geraldton, look no further:

Through a buggy tour

If you want more than just have a look, what about driving a buggy along the massive sand dunes around Pink Lake?

This 1-hour, small-group tour starts in Port Gregory caravan park. Your guide will share everything there is to know about the area, as you explore the sandy dunes and enjoy not only the lake’s view but the surrounding wildlife.

If you want to enter the water, bring reef shoes! There are sharp salt crystals at the shore and on the lake’s ground. The salt is very sticky too, so bring water to wash it off.

Visiting Pink Lake isn’t a good plan for a day trip from WA’s capital – it would be an 11-hour drive back and forth. But it’s a must-stop if you ever do a road trip from Perth to Kalbarri.

Did you know?

BASF, a chemical company, has a production plant in Hutt Lagoon. They harvest the naturally-present algae of the lake to extract its beta-carotene. This is used as a food colouring agent, cosmetics, and dietary supplements.

Now, the presence of a chemical plant may be alarming for visitors, but in reality, there’s no need for concern . It’s completely safe to visit the lake!

Why is Kalbarri’s Lake pink?

Kalbarri’s lake is pink because of Dunaliella Salina, a beta-carotenoid-producing algae.

These algae can be harvested, as they’re a great source of vitamin A and antioxidants. It can also be used as a colouring agent in the food and cosmetics industries.

Can you swim in Pink Lake (Hutt Lagoon)?

Yes, you can swim in the pink lake (Hutt Lagoon). But the water is very salty, so it may not be very pleasant.

We’d recommend swimming at Port Gregory’s beach instead, which is a short 10-minute walk from the lake car park.

Can you drink the Pink Lake in Kalbarri?

No, you can’t drink the pink lake. The water has very high saline levels, not to mention the microorganisms that could harm your health.

The bottom line

If you’re travelling through the Coral Coast highway in Western Australia, you must make a stop at Hutt Lagoon (Pink Lake).

Kalbarri is just a 30-minute drive away, with its National Park and its attractions – the Skywalk , the Z-Bend, and the Nature’s Window to name a few.

perth to hutt lagoon tour

Visiting Hutt Lagoon is absolutely worthwhile and it won’t take a full day. You can enjoy the pink lake and take in some other spectacular scenery around Kalbarri on the same day. Your best bet is to stay in Kalbarri for a few days, to have plenty of time to explore all the wonders of the region.

Perth to Kalbarri Day 1: Lancelin & the Pinnacles Desert

Total Distance: 224 km– Driving Time: 2 hours 45 minutes

During the first day of your road trip, you get to visit some of the best destinations for day trips from Perth and see a lot of sand. It is a day full of exploring different landscapes and adventures like sandboarding or quad tours.

Lancelin Sand Dunes

Distance: 126 km – Driving Time: 1.5 h

The Lancelin Sand Dunes are the biggest dunes of Western Australia, and a must-see while on a road trip from Perth to Kalbarri. Their sand is very soft and therefore, these dunes are an amazing place to go sandboarding. So be sure to stop there for an hour or two so you can have some fun.

You can easily hire sandboards at the ‘Have a Chat Store’ in Lancelin. 2.5 hours cost 12.50 AUD and 3 hours cost 14.50 AUD. You can rent sit-down and stand-up boards, which makes it a suitable activity for all ages.

You can also join a quad bike tour, go dirt biking in the dunes or explore them with your 4WD.

Perth to Kalbarri Lancelin Dunes

Pinnacles Desert

Distance: 79 km – Driving Time: 50 min

The second Perth to Kalbarri road trip stop of the day is also sandy, but that is where the similarities end. Unlike the Lancelin Sand Dunes, the sand of the Pinnacles Desert is a deep yellow, which only adds to the otherwordly atmosphere of this area full of limestone pillars.

Perth to Kalbarri Pinnacles

The Pinnacles Desert is located in Nambung National Park, which happens to be one of the best Australian National Parks .

You can explore it by walking along the 1.5 km walking track, or by following the 4 km long driving loop. Be sure to stop at the viewpoints from where you can marvel at the surrounding area and visit the Discovery Centre where you can learn more about the area.

Read more : Pinnacles Desert in WA

If you want to wait for the sunset or are looking for some time at the beach, you should check out the nearby Hangover Bay or the thrombolites in Lake Thetis.

Additionally, you could also leave the Pinnacles Desert and explore the more remote dune areas of Nambung National Park. Just ensure that you inform the Ranger Station of your plans.

The Pinnacles Desert is the most beautiful during sunset when the Pinnacles cast long shadows and the fading sunlight paints the sand in deep hues. However, this is also the time when animals become active, so I recommend staying in the nearby town of Cervantes, so you can avoid driving in the dark.

Accommodation: Cervantes

Distance: 19 km – Driving Time: 14 minutes

The town of Cervantes also offers some highlights including the Cervantes Art Trail, which features 23 artworks, and Lake Thetis. Therefore, this town is a great place to stay at the end of your first day on the road.

The best places to stay during your Perth to Kalbarri road trip are the Pinnacles Edge Resort   and the  RAC Holiday Park . The RAC Holiday Park offers everything from villas, to caravan sites and campsites, so you will find something suitable regardless of your preferences.

Perth to Kalbarri Day 2: Jurien Bay & Geraldton

Total Distance: 223 km– Driving Time: 2 hours 25 minutes

The second day of your Perth to Kalbarri road trip will take you to two towns that happen to be ideal destinations if you love nature and if you want to learn about the areas Aboriginal history.

Depending on what you want to do in each town, it might be a good idea to split this day into two days. Otherwise, you will definitely have to choose what you want to do the most or skip one town.

Distance from Cervantes: 27 km – Driving Time: 20 minutes

Jurien Bay is a great stop along the way from Perth to Kalbarri if you want to have always dreamed of swimming with Australian sea lions and want to go hiking. It is also a great town to visit if you want to go snorkeling, kayaking, or skydiving.

If you want to spot marine animals and a scenic view, you can explore the 14.5 km long Turquoise Way Trail by renting a bike. It is a sealed track along the coastline all the way from the Jurien Bay Marina to the Hill River Estuary.

Swimming with sea lions is the highlight of a trip to Jurien Bay, and the best way to do it is to join a boat tour to the Essex Rocks Nature Reserve a few kilometers off the coast. The tours usually last 2 to 2.5 hours, and you can stay on the boat or snorkel with the wild sea lions. Do not feed them.

While in the area, you can also explore Lesueur National Park by driving along the 18.5 km sealed one-way road or by hiking. There are over 1100 different plants in this national park, and it is the most beautiful during the wildflower season from August to November. If you want to hike through the park, there are 3 walking trails ranging from a short 2.5 km loop to a moderate 7.1 km loop.

Sandy Cape, 13 km north of Jurien Bay, is a great place to stop if you want to go snorkeling during your Perth to Kalbarri road trip. There is also a campsite where you can stay if you want to spend more time in and around Jurien Bay.

Distance: 196 km – Driving Time: 2 hours 5 minutes

Geraldton’s city center is full of cafés, galleries, and street art, and the one place along the route from Perth to Kalbarri, where it is easy to get a Slurpee. The latter might not be that important to you, but if you happen to be like me and think that Slurpees are a crucial part of Australia road trips, this is where you make a Slurpee stop.

While in town, you can also visit the HMAS Sydney II Memorial. There are daily free tours that start at 10:30 AM.

There are plenty of beaches that are great for snorkeling and windsurfing. Geraldton is the Australian windsurfing capital, so rent some gear in town and have fun. The best beach for windsurfing is Coronation Beach 30 km north of Geraldton.

Geraldton is also the starting point of the scenic flights over the pink Hutt Lagoon, Kalbarri National Park, and the beautiful Abrolhos Islands. So be sure to book a scenic flight if you have ever dreamed of seeing one of these places from above.

See Kalbarri, Hutt Lagoon & the Abrolhos Islands from above

The 122 islands of the three Abrolhos Islands groups are a real highlight and can be considered a hidden gem in Australia . Therefore, visiting them and seeing them from above is a rather unique experience.

Flying seagulls at the harbour of Geraldton

The Abrolhos Islands are located 60 km off the coast of Geraldton, and unless you charter a liveaboard, you can only visit them as a day trip. Hereby, you can take the Abrolhos Islands Fast Ferry which takes 1.5 hours each way. The all-day tour costs 299 AUD per adult and 249 AUD for children under 12. You have to board the boat at 7:30 AM and will be back in Geraldton around 5:30 PM, so this is the only thing you can do that day.

Alternatively, you can book a scenic flight over the Abrolhos Islands and spend some time on East Wallabi Island. Hereby, you can choose between scenic flights with 30 minutes on East Wallabi Island and 3:30 hours.

Book a Scenic Flight with a 30 Minutes Island Stop (295 AUD)

Book a Scenic Flight with a 3:30 h Island Visit (410 AUD)

Another great thing to do in and around Geraldton is the Yamaji Drive Trail. This 60 km long drive trail is a great way to learn about the Aboriginal heritage before and after the Europeans arrived in the area, and includes the Ellendale Pool. It takes around half a day to visit all 14 locations of local Aboriginal significance.

Accommodation: Geraldton

There are a lot of great accommodations in Geraldton. If you want to stay in a hostel, the Geraldton Backpackers is great. And if you want a hotel room, the Gerald Apartment Hotel and Zebras Guesthouse are great.

Freecamping in Geraldton

Free camping If you doing this Perth to Kalbarri road trip in a caravan or campervan, there are two free camping places within the town. There are 6 bays for non-self-contained campervans right at the Point Moore Lighthouse. There are toilets, cold showers, picnic tables, and a bbq on site. However, camping in tents is not allowed (unless it is a rooftop tent).

If you have a self-contained caravan, you can right at the Esplanade at the Francis Street Carpark .

Both free camping sites have a 24 hours limit. In case you want to stay more than one night or prefer a paid camping site, you can stay at the Belair Gardens Caravan Park .

Perth to Kalbarri Day 3: Hutt Lagoon & Coastal Kalbarri

Total Distance: 177.3 km – Total Driving Time: 2 hours 12 minutes

Your day 3 itinerary on the road from Perth to Kalbarri begins with a stop at the stunning pink Hutt Lagoon before you explore the coastal cliffs of Kalbarri National Park. You do not have to pay any national park entry fee to explore the coastal cliffs of Kalbarri National Park.

See Hutt Lagoon from above before you drive there!

Hutt Lagoon

Distance from Geraldton to the Pink Lake Lookout: 97 km – Driving Time: 1 hour 10 minutes

Hutt Lagoon is a marine salt lake with bubblegum pink water, so visiting it is a must when on a road trip from Perth to Kalbarri. It is one of the best and most amazing pink lakes in Australia because it retains its unique coloration year-round.

Pink Lake Hutt Lagoon

It is undeniably one of the best photo spots in Western Australia and looks best around midday (10 AM to 2 PM) when direct sunlight hits the lake. Therefore, it is the ideal first stop on your third day on the road from Perth to Kalbarri.

The best viewpoint is the ‘Pink Lake Lookout’ on Port Gregory Road, but you can also stop at some points along George Gregory Drive.

This pink lake receives its color thanks to naturally-occurring beta-carotene that is produced by algae that use it to protect themselves from the sunlight.

Kalbarri: Natural Bridge to Island Rock

Distance to Natural Bridge: 60 km – Driving Time: 40 minutes

The Natural Bridge and Island Rock are must-sees if you visit Kalbarri and are an ideal first stop within the national park. Park at the parking area near Castle Cove and then explore these two sites by walking along the boardwalk. A return trip is 1,2 km long and accessible for everyone.

Island Rock once used to be part of the stunning cliff front, but thanks to erosion it is now a picturesque pinnacle standing on its own. Meanwhile, the Natural Bridge is an arch around which the waves crash. Both of marvelous sights, so be sure to walk the entire boardwalk.

Perth to Kalbarri Coastal Bigurda Trail

Bigurda Trail

If you want a longer walk, and do not mind backtracking, or have someone that can pick you up, you can also walk along the entire Bigurda Trail that follows the cliffs. This great 8 km long trail includes the boardwalk between the Natural Bridge and Island Rock and ends at Eagle Gorge, which happens to be the next stop of day 3 from Perth to Kalbarri.

During the wildflower season, you will see a lot of wildflowers and if you look at the water, you have a good chance of spotting bottlenose dolphins like those in Monkey Mia in the Shark Bay area .

Kalbarri: Eagle Gorge Lookout

Distance: 8.7 km – Driving Time: 9 minutes

Eagle Gorge is another picturesque location in the coastal part of Kalbarri National park, and therefore it is well worth a stop. There is even a secluded beach that you can reach by walking down a path from the viewpoint.

Kalbarri: Red Bluff

Distance: 5.3 km – Driving Time: 6 minutes

The last stop on day 3 of your Perth to Kalbarri itinerary is Red Bluff. There is a parking lot that is only a short 1.1 km return walk away from the highest elevation of the national park.

If you still have time for a nice hike, you can do the 1,4 km long Red Bluff to Beach Trail. It is a steep class 3 hike with loose ground, so watch your step. Be sure to bring swimwear and a towel so you can go for a swim.

Accommodation: Kalbarri (town)

Distance: 6.3 km – Driving Time: 7 minutes

The best place to stay on your third day is in the town of Kalbarri. The Kalbarri Edge Resort  and the  Kalbarri Palm Resort  are great accommodations. The  Eco Haven Retreat   is an amazing place to stay with a private pool. And if you are traveling with a group of friends,  River Retreats   Kalbarri   is a great option.

There are several caravan parks and holiday parks in and around Kalbarri including the Murchison Caravan Park and the Kalbarri Tudor Holiday Park.

If you want to stay close to your last stop of the day, you can stay at the Kalbarri Red Bluff Tourist Park .

And if you want to camp in nature and be surrounded by wildflowers, you can camp at the Murchison House Station. It is open from April to October, and prices depend on your exact mode of transportation.

Perth to Kalbarri Day 4: Inland Kalbarri

Total Distance: 110.1 km – Total Driving Time: 1 hour 38 minutes

On your fourth and last day of your Perth to Kalbarri road trip, you get to explore the River Gorge area of Kalbarri National Park. This day is all about hiking and stunning views from lookouts and the Kalbarri Skywalk.

If you do not want to see everything that the inland river-gorge part of Kalbarri has to offer or if you want to spend more time in the area, you can also spend some time at Blue Holes. It is a Fish Habitat Protection Area and an amazing snorkeling spot.

Book a Scenic Flight over Kalbarri Coastal Cliff & Inland Gorges

Kalbarri Skywalk & Nature’s Window

Distance: 37 km + 2.5 km – Driving Time: 33 min + 4 min

The Kalbarri Skywalk opened after I visited Karijini National Park as it was still under construction, but based on the photos I have seen, it is more than a worthwhile stop. There are two platforms that respectively arch 17 meters and 25 meters over the 100 m high cliffs edge, and grant its visitors a spectacular view.

If you want to avoid the crowds and see the river gorge below in stunning light, you should visit the Kalbarri Skywalk during sunrise.

Nature’s Window

The next stop is the insta-famous Nature’s Window. It is a stunning natural rock formation that frames the Murchison River down below. It is a 1 km return hike of class 3, so expect unaltered uneven terrain.

Be prepared to wait a while if you want a photo of you sitting in Nature’s Window, as this spot is quite popular. It might take around half an hour.

If you are up for a bigger adventure, you can continue onwards after reaching this scenic spot and do the 8 km long Loop Hike.

It is a class 4 hike, so expect rough terrain and only tackle it if you have experience and the right gear.

Perth to Kalbarri Cliff Loop Trail

Z Bend Lookout & River Trail

Distance: 12 km – Driving Time: 14 minutes

Perth to Kalbarri Z Bend

Day 4 of your Perth to Kalbarri road trip continues with the Z Bend Lookout and the Z Bend River Trail.

While the lookout is a 1,2 km return hike away from the car park, the River Trail is a 2,6 km return walk. Be sure to visit both.

As class 3 and class hikes, both require a certain level of fitness. The trail includes parts where you have to climb down some rocks, but with stable footwear, it is a great hike that ends right at the river.

The car park is also the starting point of the 6 km return Four Ways Trail, which is also a class 4 hike.

Hawks Head & Ross Graham Lookout

Distance: 54 km + 4.6 km – Driving Time: 42 min + 5 min

Your day of exploring the river gorge area of Kalbarri and your Perth to Kalbarri road trip ends with two viewpoints that a located further inland than the parts of Kalbarri you have already seen.

Stop at the Hawks Head Lookout to take in the view. It is a short 200 meters return walk.

Afterward, you should stop at the Ross Graham Lookout. The hike there is 700 meters return trip and is rated as class 3. It is a great stop to end your Perth to Kalbarri drive.

And if you still feel up for a short hike, you can hike down to the river. It is a 1,4 km return hike on uneven terrain and quite pretty as the sun is setting.

Perth to Kalbarri Hawks Head Lookout

Accommodation

By ending your Perth to Kalbarri road trip with a stop at the Ross Graham Lookout, you are in the perfect position to continue onwards to Exmouth or to return to Perth. As the day is likely about to end by that point, I either recommend staying another night in the town of Kalbarri or at the Motor Hotel in Northampton.

If you want to free camp, you can stay at the Galena Bridge North and Galena Bridge South campgrounds near the town of Ajana and at the banks of the Murchison River. Both have toilets, picnic tables, and bins and are suitable for tents, campervans, and caravans. It is not allowed to stay more than 24 hours, but I guess you could always check if the other side of the river is nicer by staying there for a night.

If you prefer a paid camping site en route to Perth, you can spend the night at Northbrook Farmstay. Unpowered sites cost 20 AUD and powered sites cost 25 AUD. You have to reserve a spot in advance, so give them a call or send them an email.

Onwards from Kalbarri

Once you have explored Kalbarri, you will either head back to Perth or continue your road trip. If you are planning a road trip in either direction, my road trip planning guide will help you make the most of your time on the road.

Back to Perth

If you head back to Perth once you have explored Kalbarri National Park, you can drive back via the inland Brand Highway instead of the Indian Ocean Drive.

Perth to Kalbarri Wildflowers

Choosing this route is amazing if you are traveling sometime between June and September, as you get to experience the wildflower season of the region.

Both the Indian Ocean Drive and Brand Highway are part of the Everlasting Trail, so driving both roads allows you to see the best of the wildflower season.

Also contemplate a stop in Mullewa, east of Geraldton, where you will find giant carpets of Everlastings. Go for a walk along the Mullewa Wildflower Way and be amazed.

If you are traveling from October to December, you might be interested in exploring Moore River National Park as this is when the ‘Western Australian Christmas Tree’ (also known as Nuytsia floribunda or Moogjar ) blooms.

Onwards to Exmouth

If you have more time and want to use it to see more of Western Australia, you should head onwards to Exmouth. The road trip from Perth to Kalbarri might be amazing, but driving further north will allow you to see more of what the state has to offer.

If you travel all the way from Perth to Exmouth and do not end your trip in Kalbarri, you can explore the Shark Bay area where you can meet the Monkey Mia dolphins , dive in the Ningaloo Reef off the coast of Coral Bay and Exmouth , and explore Cape Range National Park with its stunning snorkeling spots and canyon.

How to get from Perth to Kalbarri?

The best way to get from Perth to Kalbarri is to drive there. This is especially the case if you want to turn it into a Perth to Kalbarri road trip with several stops along the way. However, it is also possible to do this road trip by bus. Just know, that your trip will be a lot longer than 4 days if you want to visit all the stops listed in this itinerary.

The best mode of transportation for a Perth to Kalbarri road trip is a car, campervan, or caravan. You do not need a 4WD as every stop is accessible by a normal car. As you leave Perth, you follow the Indian Ocean Drive north until it joins Brand Highway (Highway 1) north of Arrowsmith. From there, you follow it to Geraldton and then Northampton, where you drive towards the coast by following Port Gregory Drive.

Leaving Brand Highway at this point allows you to see the pink Hutt Lagoon en route from Perth to Kalbarri, and allows you to explore the coastal cliffs of Kalbarri National Park first. After spending a day exploring the coastal part, you then follow Ajana-Kalbarri Road to the two Kalbarri River Gorge entry points.

Don’t have a car? Find the perfect rental car on RentalCars.com!

If you cannot do this road trip with a car, you could also do it via bus by using the Hop-On, Hop-Off option of Integrity Coach Lines . There are stops in Perth, Lancelin, Cervantes, Jurien Bay, Geraldton, and Kalbarri, so you would be able to visit most places on this Perth to Kalbarri road trip itinerary.

However, the trip would take more time, as there are only 3 buses per week. The buses leave Perth in the evening of Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday, and reach Geraldton just after midnight, so the following bus connection technically departs on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

The 1500 km Pass for the Hop On / Off service is more than enough and costs 269 AUD. The 1500 km are valid for 12 months, so you could also plan another trip.

If you want to visit the Pinnacles Desert, you would have to take a taxi from Cervantes. Additionally, you have to organize a shuttle bus or take the TransWA bus to get to Kalbarri, as the Kalbarri dropoff is in Ajana, which is around 70 km east of the town of Kalbarri. The TransWA bus runs on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Where should I stop between Perth and Kalbarri?

There are several worthwhile stops between Perth and Kalbarri including the Lancelin Sand Dunes, the Pinnacles Desert, Jurien Bay, and the pink Hutt Lagoon. All of them offer several great things to do, so be sure to plan a road trip from Perth to Kalbarri that allows you to visit them.

Best Time for a Perth to Kalbarri Road Trip

Generally speaking every stop on this Perth to Kalbarri itinerary is a great and worthwhile destination year-round. But given that this road trip includes a lot of hikes, it is best not to do it in the summer months from December to February. While the nights average at a pleasant 19°C, the daytime temperatures can reach 45°C, which would make it too dangerous to hike in Kalbarri or the more remote areas around the Pinnacles Desert.

Autumn (March to May) is a nice time for a Perth to Kalbarri road trip, but it is often the most popular time which means that it is better to book in advance.

Meanwhile, the winter months from June to August ring in the wildflower season of the region, and the average daytime temperature in Kalbarri is around 22°C, which makes it the ideal time for hiking. Just know that the nighttime temperature tends to be around 10°C, so bring a warm sleeping bag if you are camping in a tent or campervan without heating.

Perth to Kalbarri Best Time

Spring (September to November) marks the end of the wildflower season, so plan your trip from Perth to Kalbarri no later than October if you want to see the region’s colorful flower carpets. It is also the best time to spot whales off the coast. Kalbarri sees fewer visitors in November as temperatures are already on the rise, but most days it is still cool enough for longer hikes, which makes it the ideal time for a road trip if you want to avoid the crowds.

Explore Perth's lively cityscape, be awed by its natural wonders and encounter remarkable wildlife?all in one unforgettable adventure.

The Pinnacles Desert

Located within the arid heart of Western Australia, Nambung National Park is home to a remarkable phenomenon known as the Pinnacles Desert.

Pink Lake (Hutt Lagoon)

Beyond the outback lies the captivating Hutt Lagoon, a natural wonder that mesmerizes all who witness its enchanting pink hues.

This picturesque lake, adorned with striking pink hues, resembles a scene straight out of an artist's palette. The unique blend of algae and high salt content gives rise to its eye-catching colouration.

Under sunlight, algae such as the remarkable Dunaliella salina produce the vibrant red pigment beta-carotene, which is also present in colourful vegetables like carrots.

Experience the beauty of Hutt Lagoon by strolling leisurely along its shorelines. Or treat yourself to a scenic plane ride for a breathtaking aerial view instead.

Caversham Wildlife Park

Immerse yourself in Australia's wild side at Caversham Wildlife Park, where nature enthusiasts can embark on intimate and immersive experiences with the local wildlife.

This sanctuary is a haven for a diverse range of indigenous species, including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, wombats and native birds.

Get up close and personal with these magnificent creatures, snap some unforgettable moments with adorable koalas and witness captivating wildlife shows. Don't forget to feed the kangaroos and penguins!

From the classic Australian wine to savory cider and even exquisite chocolate, the Swan Valley region is filled to bursting with West Australian specialties.

Take a sip underneath the arms of leafy trees at Lancaster Wines, sample some sour cider at the Baskerville Tavern or mix-and-match your very own chocolate flavors at Whistler's Chocolate Co and Café–the gastronomic possibilities are endless!

Cottesloe Beach

As just one of the many picturesque white sand beaches in Perth, Cottesloe Beach has got some fierce competition.

But once you sit down and gaze out at the magical clear waters, pristine sands and its distinctive romantic pavilion, you'll see why Cottesloe is one of Perth's must-visit beaches.

At just 20 minutes away from the city, it's simply an easy day trip to enjoy swimming, surfing and snorkeling. And once you're done, indulge yourself in the area's many food offerings in its diverse café, bar and restaurant selection!

Festival Fever

If there's something else that Aussies love more than beaches and barbeques, it has got to be festivals!
