Come to Pukekura, a haven for penguins. On tour your guide will share stories about Kororā, the Little Blue Penguin, the world’s smallest penguin. You'll be guided down to the beach to a viewing platform to see them in their natural habitat as they arrive home. Blue Penguins Pukeura is a conservation project between the Korako Karetai whanau and Otago Peninsula Trust - funds raised go to penguin care.

Access to Pilots Beach reserve penguins at dusk is only when on a guided tour. Max 90 people, so make sure you book. Photos allowed - no flash.

Tour time is approximately half an hour before sunset. Transport - Blue Penguin Tiki Tour available from Dunedin City - return.

Dunedin's wildlife tours

As well as royal albatross, there are yellow-eyed penguins, little blue penguins and New Zealand fur seals.

Around 32 kilometres in length, Otago Peninsula is more than spectacular, it's stupendous. There's a beautiful coastal road punctuated by pretty bays and historic villages, romantic inland roads that meander around hills and farmland, wild surf beaches and sea cliffs. There's even a Lover's Leap. In almost every photo-worthy view, you'll see ocean - huge and unhindered all the way to Antarctica.

On top of all this, the peninsula is where you can encounter incredibly rare marine animals and birds. Yellow-eyed and blue penguins, fur seals, sea lions and the biggest seabirds of them all, albatrosses. They're living wild and free, so you get a rare 'David Attenborough' glimpse into their lives. For wildlife watching, we recommended guided tours with local experts to ensure the wellbeing and long-term survival of Dunedin's rare species.

The Penguin Place for encounters with incredibly rare yellow-eyed penguins

Of all the Dunedin wildlife tours, this one is the most famous. At the Penguin Place, a private conservation reserve, yellow-eyed penguins (Maori name hoiho) go about their daily lives while you watch from carefully-disguised hides. There are fewer than 2,000 breeding pairs of yellow-eyed penguins in the world, so this is a very special experience.

Fully grown yellow-eyed penguins are around 75cm tall. They eat mostly krill and nest on land. Because chicks stay with their parents until they're around a year old, there's a good chance you'll see babies as well as grown-ups. Penguin tours operate year-round in the early evening, when the adult birds are arriving home from a busy day of fishing. Much of the money raised by tours goes towards penguin conservation.

Smaller than yellow-eyed penguins, blue penguins (Maori name kororā) are ridiculously cute. An adult weighs about one kilogram and stands just 35cm tall. Instead of the traditional black and white outfit, this little penguin teams a white bib with soft bluey-grey.

There are little blue penguins throughout New Zealand, but Otago Peninsula is one of the easiest places to arrange an encounter. On a little blue penguin viewing tour you'll see the whole end-of-day routine. First, the penguins congregate in the water just off the beach. You'll hear them discussing the day, penguin style, with honks and loud squawks. Then they make their way into the beach, where they waddle up the sand to their nests. While this is going on, you'll be watching from a purpose-built viewing platform.

Income from the tours goes towards planting native trees, installing nesting boxes and controlling predators.

Discover the royal albatross colony

Right at the tip of Otago Peninsula is the Royal Albatross Centre, where you can visit the world's only mainland breeding colony of royal albatross and choose from a range of albatross tours. The birds are constantly arriving and leaving the colony, so you can enjoy watching their superlative flying skills. You'll soon distinguish the albatrosses from the regular gulls - they are huge by comparison, with a wingspan of up to three metres.

From viewing areas on Taiaroa Head, you can also witness the social and family life of the colony. Albatross live here year-round, but the best time to see albatross action is January to September.

Seeing Little Blue Penguins in Dunedin

Seeing a raft of little blue penguins approach shore and then flop out of the water and up the beach toward their nests is one of the best experiences a tourist (or a local) could have in Dunedin. We did the Blue Penguins Pukekura tour at Pilots Beach, Taiaroa Head recently and were blown away by the experience — I reckon you’re going to want to book it too after reading this post!

Do you need to take a tour?

Yes, as access to the beach where the penguins land is blocked an hour or so before sunset (they arrive home from sea at dusk). You may see them in other places around Dunedin but it wouldn’t be anything like this experience.

We saw little blue penguins in Dunedin in January, with the tour starting at 9 pm. The sun was going down as we arrived at Taiaroa Head — there’s some time before the tour properly starts to have a look around and get some photos.

The First Penguin

After a brief talk about the area and its tiny inhabitants we headed down to the viewing platform above Pilots Beach. We waited around for a while until a lone penguin came into view. It was too early for it to come in (they wait until dark / go in groups for safety reasons) so it just played around in the waves for about 20 minutes.

It would walk a little way up the beach and then go back, and seeing it getting knocked over by waves and rolling around in the water was pretty cute. It eventually walked up towards its nest and then stopped and relaxed by the viewing platform for another 10 minutes or so. Once penguins get close to the nest area they relax, preen their feathers and socialise. As the first penguin enjoyed some alone time chicks were starting to emerge from their nests.

Penguin Chaos

With the black cloud of penguins approaching, excitement levels were getting high. They cruised into the beach and then landed in that undignified way only penguins can before waddling up the beach.

Then they just waited around. Some went straight to their nests, but a big group congregated at the top of the beach and stayed there for ages, with some coming and going. This is their social time, so they like to preen their feathers and be near their penguin friends for a while before going home to feed the kids. Just like humans I guess.

They don’t all arrive together either. Several more groups came in over the next half hour or so, with a few arriving way later than the main groups. There were well over 100 penguins that night. They’re fascinating creatures — you’ll never get bored watching them and the platform gives you as close a view as you could hope for in a wildlife experience. You’re metres from the penguins. They don’t seem to mind either — the colony is thriving,  probably because it’s run by a trust funded by these penguin tours.

Walk around the platform and you’ll see penguins pretty much surrounding the whole thing. They’re everywhere. After they all landed it kinda reminded me of a bar late at night, with penguins hanging out in pairs, or small groups, chasing each other, and basically just looking like drunk people having a good time before the doors shut for the night.

December to February (breeding season) is the time to visit if you want to see chicks. We saw some adorable chicks who had lost half their feathers  — so cute!

The Details

The tour starts just before sunset, so varies month by month (you can book it here ). We did it in mid-January and couldn’t have timed it better. You’re guaranteed to see penguins but there are a lot less in winter. There is transport available from the city if you need it, otherwise it’s a 50 minute drive out to Taiaroa Head — it’s a narrow, winding road and some of the locals go fast, so drive carefully and let people pass if they’re getting agitated behind you.

However the transport van was a rental, and terrible. Smelled deeply of smoke the whole day... Smallish windows blocked somewhat by mechanisms, and the audio system was poor. Had to crane my neck to see the sights and was sickened by the permeated cigarette smell. Provider should do better! Noticed that another tour group of theirs had a perfectly lovely touring van, but not our group. Also box lunches should be provided rather than stops at supermarket. And one lady in our group wanted to stop at the pharmacy so we got pretty delayed because of "stops" and we missed the beginning of our paid in advance albatross center tour. That was unfortunate for us. Guests should find their own way to the pharmacy, which is right in Port Chalmers. So there are some improvements that should be made by this tour provider. Tour driver met us at cruise port and returned us there, so very easy transportation wise. Loved olveston house. We arranged a private tour via emails with Asta while we were on the ship. She was very prompt in answering and working with us to make the excursion possible. There was some payment challenges which almost ruined the tour and I will get to that later. Keith was our guide and he was absolutely wonderful and a delight to be with. With his knowledge, time management and flexibility, we hit pretty much all major city highlights and points of interests including castle garden & its lunch cafe during a 5 hours span. Concerning payment, I would recommend Fantail Tours to have an alternate payment method in addition to just the “invoice page website”, because for two days we couldn’t figure out why the payment website shows as blank on mobile phones, iPad and laptops with our cruise ship Internet package. We almost cancelled the tour. Eventually we had to upgrade to premium Internet package to make the payment page showed up correctly. Cruising from Sydney around NZ - Dunedin was our first port of call. Tours through the cruise line were very expensive, and we decided to explore what was available locally. We weren’t disappointed. Teresa (I hope I got the spelling right!) was our guide - and she was perfect! Remembering everyone’s names straight off the bat (Cath & Andy!). Having visited, toured, worked as a croupier on a cruise liner and having settled in Dunedin (love at first sight!) - she had every perspective and insight you could ever want. Small group, exceptionally priced, and gave us a real flavour of Dunedin. Dunedin is the old Gaelic word for Edinburgh - and it’s not hard to see the Scottish influence. Had a lovely day exploring town, and the Otago Peninsula, where we climbed the worlds steepest street, visited the beautiful campus of the University of Otago, Dunedin Station, the Botanic Gardens, and an additonal (unplanned) visit to the Ōtākou marae (meeting house) - one of the places where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 m. We saw fur seals, many and many different species of bird, including the bloody large Royal Albatross (not sure that this is it’s botanic name - Teresa will know!), with its 3m wing span! All of this was possible because of Teresa and Fanitail. Easy to find, straight off the boat at Port Chalmers, picked up on time, a full day out, and then back to the boat well before departure - don’t look any further if you want a great day, at a reasonable price. She was very friendly and accommodating. Her van was comfortable. She took us to so many wonderful spots including the steepest street in the world, the old railway station, the university, botanic gardens, Larnach Castle and Olveston. • Franph2712 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Dunedin A fabulous day out. Our tour guide, Trii, was an absolute delight. Her knowledge of Dunedin is unbelievable. She shared so much that you simply wouldn't find in a guide book. As our ship docked later than expected and we were not going to return until around 6pm, Trii organised for us to go to a supermarket so that we wouldn't go hungry ... a nice little gesture. The tour through Olveston House was fantastic. Our guide was very thorough. Its a beautiful piece of history. The Castle is always an interesting visit. The views from the top are amazing. Tour Information  Penguin Tour Our penguin tour offers the most exclusive opportunity in New Zealand to view the world’s rarest penguin, the hoiho (yellow-eyed penguin), in their natural habitat. This 90-minute guided tour consists of three parts. Our guests begin their experience in a theatre setting, where they learn about the hoiho and our conservation efforts to protect them. Guests then move into our rehabilitation centre where hoiho and other penguin species can be seen up close (when penguins are in our care). Finally, guests take a short bus trip into our reserve where they are guided on an approximately 2km (1.25 mile) nature walk with the potential to see numerous New Zealand native plants and animals, including hoiho (yellow-eyed penguins) and kororā (little penguins), fur seals, sea lions, and several species of shore and forest birds, all of which reside in the reserve. Please note, it is important that guests feel physically capable of a 2k (1.25 mile) walk over uneven terrain and more than 100 steps, which may be experienced within our reserve. If individuals are claustrophobic, please note that portions of the tour may pass through a trench system (which is narrow at times) and opens into dug out viewing hides which allow for observing wildlife at eye level.

'Zoo mentality' of some cruise-goers a concern

At yesterday’s cruise ship season debriefing, Doc summer ranger Becky Cameron said although it enjoyed working with tour operators to promote the region’s wildlife, there had been issues with some cruise ship passengers.

Most cruise ship operators were very good at steering their passengers to the guided tour operators, but they still heard of examples of passengers going on their own, she said.

"Doc has a strong compliance team, but remains concerned about the disturbance of the natural habitat of hoiho and sea lions, who are particularly vulnerable."

Ms Wilson said the best approach to help limit wildlife disturbance from tourists who wanted to witness Dunedin’s wildlife was to ensure they took guided tours.

"This is important for harm minimisation."

Penguins were "very shy", and could get "quite stressed", so needed to be treated carefully by touring groups, she said.

"Most of the tour operators have been great; they’ve got all their permits in place and have been giving people really great information and experience.

"But we have been seeing more people guiding on public conservation land or viewing the animals without a permit."

Permit fees helped to ensure Doc could maintain protection for native wildlife, she said.

Doc also did "mystery shopping" of tours, to ensure that they were giving out the right messages and operating properly, she said.

Otago Peninsula Trust eco-tourism manager Hoani Langsbury said when contacted that he saw tourists in general constantly venturing near wildlife where they should not.

"It doesn’t surprise me that Doc has put out this message.

"A high percentage of tourists are not repeat visitors, so they need to hear this message. My advice is always to direct tourists who want to see the wildlife to accredited operators ."

He was concerned about a "zoo mentality" among some tourists.

"Sea lions are living in their natural habitat, so people need to keep their distance, or not approach them at all.

"Part of being the wildlife capital of Aotearoa is that we need to ensure and advocate for the protection of the wildlife. It must come first."

In general, Dunedin was very good at promoting the environment, but "we could always be doing more", he said.

Dunedin iSite manager Louise van de Vlierd said visitors were not always educated about how to react around wildlife.

"It’s quite unique to be able to come see wildlife in their true natural surroundings, and people can just get a little bit exuberant.

"They don’t realise the harm they’re causing by getting close to penguins, for example. And sea lions can run faster than we can.

"It’s really an education thing."

Other issues raised at the cruise ship debriefing included ways to address cruise ship emissions, space for the available tour buses, and upcoming trends in cruise ship numbers.

It had been the busiest cruise season yet, Port Otago sustainability and cruise manager Carolyn Bennett told the  Otago Daily Times .

This included 117 cruise visits, generating 192,736 passengers.

There were also 41 tour operators who benefited from the cruise season.

"Overall, it’s been brilliant.

"We’re recognised as one of the best ports in New Zealand for cruise ship visits, and we want to keep continuing that."
