Cedric Burnside Grew Up Steeped in Mississippi Blues. Now, He’s Helping to Ensure Its Future

By Jonathan Bernstein

Jonathan Bernstein

A few years ago, Cedric Burnside was sitting with his acoustic guitar on the front porch of his home in Ashland, Mississippi, listening to the birds and thinking about grief and perseverance. For Burnside, the prior decade had been one of mourning and recovery; in 2012 he’d lost his brother, fellow musician Cody Burnside, at the age of 29, before losing his father, drummer Calvin Jackson, in 2015, and his mother, Linda Burnside, two years later.

“When my mom passed, I cried,” says Cedric. “When my brother passed, I cried. That’s what we do when people leave this world. But you don’t just keep crying. At some point you have to stop crying and know that regardless of what happened, and how bad it is, you got to keep going.”

The song that resulted from that feeling of resolve was “The World Can Be So Cold,” the plain-spoken acoustic- blues opener of Burnside’s stark yet deeply resonant new album, I Be Trying,  out June 25th.

If in 2021 north Mississippi hill-country blues is often seen as a relic of a bygone era, for Burnside, 42, it’s very much an evolving, present-tense practice. I Be Trying finds the singer-songwriter reworking and reinvigorating that tradition, with a focus on clear-eyed self-inventory. It’s an album full of admissions of guilt, meditations on past mistakes, and, as its title suggests, imperfect, ongoing attempts at self-betterment.

As the grandson of north Mississippi blues legend R.L. Burnside (Cedric calls him “Big Daddy”), Cedric Burnside has been recording, touring, and playing in a series of bands since he was 13, when he became R.L.’s touring drummer. But it wasn’t until 2018, when Cedric released Benton County Relic , that he felt like he was able to record and perform original music entirely on his own terms. That record earned Burnside his second Grammy nomination and established him as a commanding contemporary singer-songwriter. (Earlier this week, Burnside became a recipient of the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship from the National Foundation of the Arts, joining the ranks of American folk legends like Mavis Staples, Ralph Stanley, and Shirley Caesar.)

Burnside goes even further on I Be Trying , an urgent statement on salvation and spirituality that draws from folk, roots rock, and of course, the hill-country blues of his grandfather, who helped pioneer the subgenre’s minimalist approach and unconventional sense of rhythm. The album arrives at a moment when the hill-country sound has recently received a high-profile spotlight with the release of the Black Keys’ Top 10–charting covers album Delta Kream, which honors that tradition and includes two R.L. Burnside songs on its track list.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

I Be Trying was recorded at Royal Studios in Memphis and produced by Boo Mitchell, the son of legendary Memphis producer and Hi Records mainstay Willie Mitchell. Burnside played guitar and split percussion duty with drummer Reed Watson (also the owner of Burnside’s Alabama-based label, Single Lock Records). The North Mississippi Allstars’ Luther Dickinson and Alabama Shakes bassist Zac Cockrell also appear, and Burnside’s youngest daughter, Portrika, makes her recording debut.

Growing up in a legendary musical family like the Burnsides didn’t exempt Cedric Burnside from the rural poverty of north Mississippi in the late 20th century. “I have been hungry,” says the songwriter, who sings about his difficult childhood in “Step In,” the album’s lead single, and one of its most powerful offerings. “I have been at home waiting on my momma to hitchhike home to bring us back some food. And it took a while for her to do it.”

After touring with his father as a teen, Burnside played drums on a series of Burnside family albums, like Uncle Duwayne Burnside’s 1998 release, Live at the Mint. Starting around 2006, Cedric began releasing albums himself in various configurations, as the Cedric Burnside Project, in a duo with Uncle Garry Burnside, and in pairings with fellow blues guitarists like Lightnin’ Malcolm and Bernard Allison.

Burnside played guitar in addition to drums on many of those albums, but it wasn’t until he began writing more fully on the guitar in recent years that he was able to fully carve out his own style.

“I really love to be myself,” says Burnside. “And the reason I say that is because all the times before Benton County Relic  I always collaborated with other musicians. Before I got really focused on guitar, I wrote my music from the drums, or I just had it in my head, so I’d always have to show another guitar player what I had in my head. Now I play what I have in my head. …

“A lot of stuff in my head can be really unorthodox, off the beaten path,” he adds.

Burnside says the most musically unorthodox moment on I Be Trying is actually his recording of R.L. Burnside’s “Just Like a Bird Without a Feather,” one of two covers mixed in among the album’s 10 originals. It took Cedric four months to master his grandfather’s left-field guitar rhythm. “I wanted to do it close to how he played it,” says Burnside, “because, to me, that was the whole meaning of the song.”

Elsewhere, songs like “Love Is the Key” and the title track show the ways in which Burnside’s musical legacy is a mere starting point for his own contemporary craft. For the former, a song Burnside wrote in Memphis shortly before the sessions, the singer-songwriter set his lyrics about compassion and forgiveness to a sped-up variation on the chords of Junior Kimbrough’s “Meet Me in the City.” On “I Be Trying,” an unsparingly honest song about the messy process of admitting one’s own flaws, Burnside enlisted Portrika to sing with him in the studio.

“For [her] to come into the studio with Pops, it made me proud. Made me happy,” says Burnside. “We sing a lot together. We’ll just sit around and I’ll play the guitar, and we’ll just really come up with whatever pops in our head.”

Providing musical mentorship for the next generation of his family is only one of the ways Burnside remains committed to preserving the legacy of his grandfather, and more broadly, of the blues as a whole. Some, including the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, have expressed doubts about the genre’s future.

“All these guys, my Big Daddy, Junior Kimbrough, Othar Turner, Ms. Jessie Mae Hemphill, to me, they will always be successful. … It don’t have to be all about money.”

“It’s dire, young people don’t really give a [expletive],” Auerbach recently told The New York Times when asked about the future of the music, and who might be in control of its legacy moving forward. “But at the same time, were these guys ever truly successful? So what are we arguing about? If they were never successful, then who cares?”

Burnside, who says he hasn’t yet heard Delta Kream, has his own thoughts on the matter.

“All these guys, my Big Daddy, Junior Kimbrough, Othar Turner, Ms. Jessie Mae Hemphill, to me, they will always be successful, rich at heart and rich in the music, because that’s all I was around my whole life,” he says. “They showed me the ropes. So, to me, that music will always be successful, without the money part. It don’t have to be all about money, even though those guys needed money. My Big Daddy, he struggled; he was a sharecropper. He didn’t grow up with no money. But to be totally honest with you, regardless of what Dan Auerbach said, they successful to me.”

For his part, Burnside plans on continuing in his recently forged path as a singer-songwriter, one whose music is deeply informed by the past without being dictated or limited by it. He has no plans to stop covering songs by his heroes — Kimbrough, Hemphill, Big Daddy — but most important, he simply plans on singing about his own life. “I’m trying to make my own mark,” he says.

As his career progresses, he says he isn’t worried about losing touch with his musical DNA. “Hill country is in my blood, ” he says. “It don’t matter where you take me: If I move to Australia, if I move to France, I’m still gonna be hill country. You can’t take it from me.”

Burnside becomes animated as he outlines his lifelong allegiance to the music his Big Daddy instilled in him, and his commitment to furthering its legacy through his own storytelling.

“I am one of R.L. Burnside’s grandsons that will play this music until I leave this world,” he says. “I feel that I am hill-country blues.”

Like Beyoncé’s ‘Texas Hold ‘em?’ Here are 7 other Black country artists you should listen to.

Reflecting the current times, Black artists released songs this year about the Black Lives Matter movement and the international protests that took place following the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and others. Guyton wrote “Black Like Me" a year before Floyd's death, but rushed to release the song because she said the time was right. We’ve all heard of country stars like Dolly Parton or Chris Stapleton, but few can name many other Black artists who have contributed to the musical genre.

As global superstar Beyoncé's hit country single “Texas Hold’Em” continues to dominate the country and national music charts, Queen Bey’s crossover into the country music world has helped to draw attention to other Black artists in the country music space.

Historically country music was created by and played across both white and Black communities in the South, but white country music was marketed toward the rising white middle class as a way to make the genre more respected and hugely profitable, said Amanda Marie Martinez , a historian and writer studying country music and race.

As a result, the genre is mostly associated with white artists and has faced criticism for years due to its lack of diversity, gatekeeping, and racist treatment of Black country music artists, like Tracy Chapman .

In 2019, rapper Lil’ Nas X had his hit single “Old Town Road” (which has 1.2 billion views on YouTube today) removed from Billboard’s Top County Songs , sparking accusations of racism within the genre.

With a newly lit spotlight on the genre, here’s a list of seven Black country music artists you should add to your music collection (or Apple Music library).

Tanner Adell

Adell , of Lexington Kentucky, was adopted by her parents when she was barely one day old .

Expressing an interest in music at a young age, Adell taught herself how to play the guitar and enrolled in Utah Valley University’s commercial music program. Today, she has over 628,000 followers on TikTok and more than 340,000 followers on Instagram.

Growing up in Kentucky surrounded by horses and rodeos, Adell was inevitably introduced to country music.

In 2021, she moved to Nashville to pursue her dream of becoming a country music artist, and was eventually signed to Columbia Records.

Her viral major label debut single, “Honkey Tonk Heartbreak,” was eventually used as a routine song for the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders around early 2022. Over a year later, a handful of singles like “ FU-150 ,” “ Throw It Back ,” and “I Hate Texas ” have further grown her fanbase.

However, the release of her song, “ Buckle Bunny ” went viral in 2023. The song’s name, Adell says during an interview with PopCulture , was inspired by the term that men often call women who love dressing up and going to rodeos or to regard those women as rodeo groupies disrespectfully.

Cedric Burnside

Burnside , of Memphis, Tennessee, is a Grammy Award-winning blues musician set to release his fourth album “ Hill Country Love ,” on April 5.

Known for songs like, “The World Can Be So Cold” and “We Made It,” Burnside began performing country and blues at a young age, and even drummed for his grandfather blues legend R.L. Burnside .

His albums “ Descendants of Hill Country ” and “ Benton County Relic ,” were both nominated for Grammys.

On Friday, March 6, Burnside will start his upcoming tour and perform at several major cities , making his last stop at the XPoNential Music Festival, from Sept. 20-22, in Camden .

Mickey Guyton

Mickey Guyton was born in Arlington, Texas and was drawn to a variety of artists such as Dolly Parton and Whitney Houston at a young age.

In 2015, she released her self-titled EP featuring her debut single “Better Than You Left Me.” The following year she was nominated for her first Academy of Country Music Award (ACM) for New Female Vocalist.

Mickey returned to the ACM Awards in 2019 performing “I’m Standing With You” from the “Breakthrough” movie soundtrack alongside Chrissy Metz, Carrie Underwood, Lauren Alaina and Maddie & Tae.

Known for her songs like, “Somethin’ Bout You,” to “Heaven Down Here,” Guyton gained more fans in 2020 after the release of her single “ Black Like Me ,” which was named one of the Top 10 songs of 2020 by NPR .

The War and Treaty

This husband-and-wife duo — Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter — are collectively known as The War And Treaty .

Forming their two-person musical act in 2014, the couple has since earned their first-ever Grammy nominations this year for Best New Artist and Best American Roots Song for “Blank Page.”

The duo also received their first ever Duo of the Year nomination from the Country Music Association, vocal Duo nomination from the Academy of Country Music, and recognition by the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Grand Ole Opry, and the Americana Music Association.

They started their 2024 tour this month and will continue into Sept. 22. To listen to more of War and Treaty’s music, visit Apple Music .

Brittney Spencer

Baltimore native Brittney Spencer is known for her free spirit and standout ability to mold life, truth, and wild imagination into songs.

Deemed a “one to watch” by People Magazine, Spencer has shared stages with Jason Isbell, The Highwomen, Willie Nelson, Reba, Bobby Weir, and Maren Morris, to name a few. She’s also performed the National Anthem at The 148th Kentucky Derby, the Preakness in 2022 alongside Megan Thee Stallion and Lauryn Hill, and the 2023 NFL Draft.

As an outspoken advocate for her community and the planet, Brittney is an active supporter of many causes, including Habitat for Humanity, the Women’s March, CARE, and more.

She was recently named in Rolling Stone’s “Future 25.″ Brittney released her debut album, “My Stupid Life,” this year.

Kane Brown was born and raised in the Chattanooga, Tennessee area by a single mother, moving from Rossville to Fort Oglethorpe and LaFayette in Georgia and finally settling in Red Bank, Tennessee.

He attended Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School where he sang in the choir with Lauren Alaina, the runner-up on season 10 of American Idol.

Using social media as his platform, Brown posts cover songs and original material on Facebook and Instagram.

In 2014, Brown crowdfunded his debut single “Closer,” which eventually charted at the No. 1 spot on Apple Music’s country chart. Known for songs like, “Used to Love You Sober” to “Last Minute Late Night,” has gained success in the country music world.

Brown is currently in the process of signing a major label record deal, and “Used to Love You Sober” will be a single on country radio in early spring 2016. Brown’s “ In the Air” tour will kick off this March, and he will perform on March 30, at the Prudential Center, in Newark .

Shaboozey’s sophomore album, Cowboys Live Forever, Outlaws Never Die , debuted in October 2022 and uses elements of both hip hop and country.

The genre-blending album featured the single “Tall Boy” and included guest appearances by Powers Pleasant and RMR .

Hailing from Virginia, whose parents are of Nigerian descent, Shaboozey continues to combine musical styles from hip hop, Afrobeats, jazz, Americana, rock, country, and Western music.

Shaboozey burst on the scene with his popular single, “ Jeff Gordon ,” which was released in 2014. His debut album “ Lady Wrangler” dropped in 2018 and he followed up with his trap-country fusion sophomore effort “Cowboys Live Forever .”

Last year, he released his country single “ Let It Burn ,” where he once again channeled elements of the country music genre.

North Mississippi guitarist R.L. Burnside was one of the paragons of state-of-the-art Delta juke joint blues. The guitarist, singer and songwriter was born November 23, 1926 in Oxford, MS, and made his home in Holly Springs, in the hill country above the Delta. He lived most of his life in the Mississippi hill country, which, unlike the Delta region, consists mainly of a lot of small farms. He learned his music from his neighbor, Fred McDowell, and the highly rhythmic style that Burnside plays is evident in McDowell’s recording as well. Despite the otherworldly country-blues sounds put down by Burnside and his family band, known as the Sound Machine, his other influences are surprisingly contemporary: Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and Lightnin’ Hopkins. But Burnside’s music is pure country Delta juke joint blues, heavily rhythm-oriented and played with a slide.

It wasn’t until the 1990’s that he began hitting full stride with tours and his music, thanks largely to the efforts of Fat Possum Records. The label has issued recordings made by a group of Burnside’s peers, including Junior Kimbrough, Dave Thompson and others.

Up until the mid-’80s, Burnside was primarily a farmer and fisherman. After getting some attention in the late ’60s via folklorists George Mitchell (Mitchell recorded him for the Arhoolie label), he recorded for the Vogue, Swingmaster and Highwater record labels. Although he had done short tours, it wasn’t until the late ’80s that he was invited to perform at several European blues festivals. In 1992, he was featured alongside his friend Junior Kimbrough (whose Holly Spings juke joint Burnside lives next to), in a documentary film, Deep Blues. His debut recording, Bad Luck City, was released that same year on Fat Possum Records. Burnside has a second record out on the Oxford-based Fat Possum label, Too Bad Jim (1994).

These recordings showcase the raw, barebones electric guitar stylings of Burnside, and on both recordings he’s accompanied by a small band, which includes his son Dwayne on bass and son-in-law Calvin Jackson on drums, as well as guitarist Kenny Brown. Both recordings also adequately capture the feeling of what it must be like to be in Junior Kimbrough’s juke joint, where both men played this kind of raw, unadulterated blues for over 30 years. This is the kind of downhome, backporch blues played today as it has been for many decades. In 1996, Burnside teamed with indie-rocker Jon Spencer to cut A Ass Pocket O’ Whiskey for the hip Matador label; he returned to Fat Possum in 1998 for the more conventional Come on In. As Burnside had been recording intermittently since the late ’60s a spate of re-issues and live recordings began to appear in the 2000’s. Chief among them were Mississippi Hill Country Blues, largely recorded in the Netherlands in the 1980s; First Recordings, which gathered 14 of George Mitchell’s 1967 field recordings of Burnside in Coldwater, MS; a live set documenting a west coast tour Burnside on Burnside appeared in 2001. His next studio album Wish I Was in Heaven Sitting Down appeared in 2000 but it would be another 4 years before the next new R.L. Burnside recording Bothered Mind was released. That same year Burnside suffered a heart attack and underwent bypass surgery. He never fully recovered from the attack and in 2005, at the age of 79, R.L. Burnside passed away in a Memphis, TN hospital.

Cedric Burnside - Dingwalls, Camden - 04/06/19

The annual Future Juke Festival of 21st Century Blues brought a select group of artists to the London stages from the end of May through to the beginning of July. The second of these was the award winning Cedric Burnside. The 40-year-old still calls Mississippi his home where he was raised by his grandfather, the late singer/songwriter/guitarist R.L. Burnside. Cedric has the blues running through his veins, more specifically, the North Mississippi country variant which emerged from his homeland and has been knocking on his door from the day he was born.

This classy venue was packed to the rafters on a Tuesday night which was very satisfying especially as the very popular ‘Rockin’ The Blues’ gig was competing for punters and attracting many blues tinged rock fans less than a mile away.

The night intensified as it progressed, with Cedric opening the show solo, seated and demonstrating that not only is he an award winning drummer, his acoustic guitar work would have made his grandfather so proud. Although for the first half hour Cedric was seated there was real energy in the performance and indeed the songs which was fully appreciated by the respectful audience. He was completely at ease in this environment and he even took time out to tell a joke after a couple of songs. Earlier in the evening Todd Albright had given us a short but impressive 12 string acoustic set and Cedric invited him back to join him on stage for one number.

You can tell immediately that Cedric Burnside is the real deal, especially if you are a fan of North Mississippi country blues with an edge. He satisfied the old school blues fans who insist on traditional blues and nothing less with his opening solo acoustic set and also brought the blues alive for a new generation of fans brought up on the likes of White Stripes, Black Keys and more recently Picturebooks. To this end, Burnside increases the intensity and goes electric. Burnside’s compatriot Brian Jay is introduced to the proceedings and warms the drum stool for what will bring this show to a cracking climax. I have seen many impressive drum and guitar combos, but these two impressed me more because they not only ignited the flame in their own performance but also brought the audience to life. With ‘We Made It’, the opening track from Burnside’s 2018 Grammy nominated album ‘Benton County Relic’, and without any vocal encouragement, perhaps it was the message on Cedric’s t-shirt that was having an impact, everyone in the room was adhering to ‘getcha groove on’; the place was buzzing and the audience forgot about everything else for an hour and thoroughly lost themselves in the groove.

The intensity found room to increase a notch further when Burnside and Jay switched positions. Much of Burnside’s musical schooling came in this very position when he replaced his father, Calvin Jackson, and began touring and playing drums with his grandaddy from the age of thirteen. He has been the the recipient of the Blues Music Awards honour as drummer of the Year five times, including three consecutive years to 2014 and being honoured again in 2019. Brian Jay on slide guitar and adding his own vocals whipped up the audience even more especially in the groove of ‘Wash My Hands’ and a cover of his grandfather’s ‘Skinny Woman’. Surely the night was still young, unfortunately not and this truly remarkable evening was brought to a close, back to the real world.

This was my first experience of catching Cedric Burnside live, although he is no stranger here in England. He expressed how extremely grateful he was to be invited back here so soon after his last visit and there is no doubt that he will be back, sooner rather than later hopefully.
