A Guide To Slane in Meath: Things To Do, Food, Restaurants + Hotels

Nestled almost halfway between Drogheda on the east coast, and Navan on the M3, Slane is an historic village that sits on the River Boyne.

The area around Slane, like many corners of County Meath, is steeped in myth and history and it boasts both Neolithic and Norman sites to visit.

The town is also home to the mighty Slane Castle and the mythical Hill of Slane , too.

In the guide below, you’ll find everything from things to do in Slane to the best places to eat, sleep and drink.

Some quick need-to-know before visiting Slane in Meath

Although a visit to Slane in Meath is nice and straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. Location

Only an hour up the N2 and M2 from Dublin, Slane is easily accessible from the capital city, and also from other nearby towns of Drogheda (15-minutes), Navan (15-minutes), Kells (25-minutes), and Dundalk (30-minutes). The village is on a steep hillside, with the River Boyne winding its way through the valley.

2. Steeped in history

Humans have inhabited the area in and around Slane since Neolithic times. It’s been a seat of Christianity since the middle of the first millennium, and the historic remnants of the old town date back to Norman times. Slane has been home to heroes and rebels, local kings and princely monks alike.

3. A lovely base to explore Meath from

There’s endless things to do in Meath and having a convenient base to explore it from is essential. Slane is just such a place, within an easy commute to all the major sites and sights, it’s no wonder it’s such a popular little village. With a range of accommodations, pubs, and eateries, Slane can easily accommodate its guests every wish and need.

About Slane

slane in meath

There’s no better way to get to the heart of Irish-ness than by immersing yourself in one of Ireland’s most mythical counties. Slane, in County Meath, is rich in history, archaeology, and of course, hospitality.

An historic region, there’s been human habitation here since Neolithic times, and with the castle on the Hill of Slane , as well as Slane Castle watching over this stretch of the River Boyne, it’s never been easier to see why.

Town History

Slane, and the Christian settlement on the Hill of Slane, were mentioned in the stolen 1092 Annals of Inisfallen, and with the earliest village structures dating to the time of the Norman Invasion. The most original town structure is, however, the Motte and Bailey, which dates back to the feudal lordship of the Fleming family.

The village was remodelled in the 18th century to follow Georgian ideals, with identical houses, and a clearly defined town centre which is in the shape of an octagon. Over the town’s history, it has played host to Royal Irish Constabulary barracks and a gaol, and also incorporated a famous ‘Gallows Hill’ where rebels from the failed 1798 uprising were executed.

Family History

For much of Slane’s history, the Fleming family were the feudal lords. That is until the Nine-Years Wars, and the Williamite confiscations saw their lands granted to the Conynghams.

Since coming into possession of the new family, Slane Castle has flourished, and with it the village. Whilst the layout of the village is typical of the 18th century in design and layout, the castle has benefited from stylistic modernisations by the likes of Capability Brown.

Things to do in Slane (and nearby)

Although there’s only a handful of things to do in Slane, the attractions that it’s home to pack a fine punch.

Below, you’ll find some places to visit in the town along with heaps of things to do a stone’s throw away.

1. Slane Castle

slane castle

Sitting just to the west of the village of Slane, the ‘new’ Slane Castle sits on a gently rising hill above the River Boyne. The castle is famous as an outdoor music venue and has played host to many big names in the music industry.

There are tours of the stately home, as well as extensive gardens and grounds that can be explored at your leisure. On-site, you’ll find various options for refreshments, including the unique and mobile ‘Silver Fox’ cafe.

2. Slane Whiskey Distillery

Slane Whiskey Distillery is open to the public from Thursday – Sunday, and you can book a variety of tours to gain a greater appreciation for both Slane’s Irish Whiskey, but also of the process that goes into creating this very special drink.

As tour bookings are required before arriving, you can easily choose which of their tours tempts you most. With everything from making a true Irish Coffee Class, to their ever-popular ‘Evening of Slane Irish Whiskey, Storytelling & Folklore’ there’s sure to be a tour for you.

3. The Hill of Slane

the hill of slane

Less than 5-minutes drive from the village of Slane, the Hill of Slane is its older sibling, and as the name suggests, this site is set upon a hillside. To access the ruins upon the hill, park in the small car park below, and pass through the iron gate before rambling up to the ruins.

Why would you want to? Well, if you love your history or Irish mythology , or have a passion for deities, then this is the spot for you.

Legend has it that there’s a holy well here that heals the Irish supernatural beings, the Tuatha Dé Danann . The site is also reputed to be where St. Patrick lit his Paschal fire and brought Christianity to Laoire, the High King of Ireland.

4. Littlewoods Forest Walk (5-minute drive)

Littlewoods Forest

Just north of the Hill of Slane, Littlewoods Forest and its Walk makes for a lovely way to start or finish a day’s outing. Covering 28 hectares with a mix of tree species, it’s a 2km loop trail that covers the perimeter of the woodland and takes approximately 40-minutes to complete.

Eagle-eyed ramblers will be able to spot a variety of trees, including Oak, Alder, Ash, Sycamore, Horse Chestnut, and Beech all in the upper levels of the tree canopy. Below that, you’ll see Birches, Holly, Hazel, Rowans and Elms, and even a Blackthorn or two.

5. Brú na Bóinne (12-minute drive)

Bru na Boinne

It doesn’t come more incredible than Bru na Boinne , a Neolithic ‘palace’ complex of burial tombs and Megalithic passage graves, the most notable of which are Newgrange , Knowth and Dowth .

There are an additional 90 monuments on the 780-hectare site, with UNESCO classifying it as a World Heritage Site since 1993, with the name Brú na Bóinne since 2013.

With human settlement in the area for at least 6,000 years, and the major structures dating to approximately 5,000 years ago during the Neolithic period, the site at Brú na Bóinne has been fascinating visitors for centuries, least of all due to its alignment towards the sunrise at the equinox. However, visitors are now only able to go on-site via booked guided tours.

6. Balrath Woods (15-minute drive)

balrath woods meath

The Balrath Woods walk really is hard to beat. This is a quaint woodland park with a variety of walks to suit all levels of fitness, enthusiasm, and weather conditions.

Park in the nearby car park and take a stroll along the perimeter, or criss-cross your way through the grounds to discover all the educational snippets left by the forest custodians.

There is an easily traversable pathway route for those with mobility issues, or those with buggies, which takes in a gravel trail through woodland and passed the wetlands and play areas. Do note, there are no amenities at this woodland park, however, there are educational displays, and a free library.

Slane Irish Whiskey is a world-class working Distillery and state of the art visitor centre. It is located opposite the Castle Courtyard, in a restored 18th century stable yard. Slane Distillery is a joint venture between the Conyngham family of Slane Castle and the Brown-Forman Corporation of Kentucky, USA, owners of the Jack Daniel’s brand. Alex Conyngham, current Earl of Mount Charles and son of Lord Henry, is Managing Director and co-founder.

The visitor centre is beautifully designed in complete sympathy with the existing ancient building. For example, in the Stalls Bar, the original horse stalls remain intact, with tables neatly slotted into each one. On the tour visitors will experience the reality of a modern, working distillery – micro malting, mash house, brew house, still house, cooperage and maturation warehouse. Tastings of the signature triple-casked Slane Irish Whiskey are also included. These take place in one of the two purpose built tasting rooms.

Slane Distillery celebrates 40 years of rock ‘n’ roll heritage at Slane Castle in the Whiskey Lounge with records from many of the iconic bands who played Slane. A visit to the luxury gift shop completes the visit.

The Distillery is open for guided tours. An enticing cocktail menu is on offer in the courtyard or the Stalls Bar. The gift shop with tasteful clothing, souvenirs, music memorabilia and Slane Whiskey is also open. See www.slaneirishwhiskey.com for up-to-date information

Cider Making & ‘Keeving It Real’ In The Boyne Valley, Ireland

cockagee cider,irish cider tour

Some of the neatest experiences you can have in life (whether travel-related or not), are when you get a chance to hang out with someone who is incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about something and learn from them.

So I was super stoked to hang out with Mark for an Irish cider tour from The Cider Mill (@thecidermillslane) near Slane, County Meath, Ireland…he’s reviving ancient cider-making traditions and fermenting up the best cider you’ve had!

Whiskey, History, & Rock ‘N’ Roll At Ireland’s Slane Distillery & Castle

We met Mark at his family’s home, where he has a shed for the cider making in the back.  He took the time to show us around the property a bit and talk about how the different farmers and property owners in the area stay connected with each other.

Mark shared a bit about how he got started making cider (it wasn’t his first career, by far!).  His Cockagee cider won Best Irish Drink last year, and is notable as being the only cider in Ireland made using the ancient keeving process, a purely natural fermentation.  More on that in a bit!

Our cider tour started by spending some time in the shed where he makes everything, from start to finish.  In general, cider making involves three stages:  crushing the fruit, pressing out the juice, and allowing it to ferment.  There’s no brewing involved—the process looks more like that of champagne than beer.

Beyond this millennia-old process, though, there are dozens of variables that cider makers can choose.  From the types of apples to the fermentation to the machinery, there’s a lot of room for experimentation in the craft.

It was amazing to get this type of Irish cider tour, because most of the time you’ll be in a big commercial facility—a very different experience!

What is keeved cider?

Then we learned how they’re “keeving it real” (LOL never gets old).  Keeving is a process used to make naturally sweetened cider.  For this type of cider, you can only use cider apples (not eating ones, or a mixture), and the apples are first pressed to get the juice out—absolutely nothing else is added (no sugar, no water).

Natural wild yeasts eventually make their way into the juice to achieve the necessary fermentation.  Because this is all done totally naturally rather than adding yeast, this makes the total fermentation time for the cider 12 to 18 months, rather than the 3-6 weeks that’s normal.

Over the course of time the pectin in the juice makes almost a gelatin that rises to the top (it reminded me of my kombucha scoby).  This is such an interesting and rare process…while most of the French ciders are keeved, Mark is the only one in Ireland doing it right now (and only with the Cockagee cider, not his other ones).

The natural keeving process for Cockagee cider creates this pectin gel at the top

After learning all about keeving, we went into the little tasting shed and Mark took us through several different cider versions he makes.

Ciderkin is the equivalent of “small beer”, using the second pressing (in old time-y days this was used as laborer wages).  His is (if I’m remembering correctly) around 4%, but historically this was even lower ABV.

My favorite fun fact according to Mark:   alcohol under 3-4% rehydrates your body, vs. dehydrating it… #themoreyouknow

Tasting different types of cider on an Irish cider tour

We then tried his Windvane (50/50 eating and cider apples) with “a little bit of funk in it”.  Then it was on to the Lambhog (little hand, pronounced “Lavohg” in Irish).  It’s 100% cider apples but not keeved, which is what sets it apart from the Cockagee cider.

Cider apples are full of tannin, the same as red grapes, and so this gives the cider a lot of body and dries your mouth out more than what many ciders will (because they’re made more with eating apples).

Different types of cider from The Cider Mill in Slane, Ireland...a cool Irish cider tour

You might also like:  My Favorite Cross-Body Purse for Travel

And then the glorious Cockagee (the name of the cider apple it’s made from…its named after the color of the apple which translates to “goose-shit green” in Irish).

This is 100% keeved and made from the cockagee apples, and is absolutely delightful.  It drinks like a really great sparkling wine, full of body and nuance and different flavors.  It’s amazing!

Cheers! We toast our Cockagee cider and how amazing it tastes.

Check out nearby Slane Distillery & Castle while you’re here!

Cheers to that!  We also talked Mark into giving us a taste of his Perry (made from pears)…SO YUM.

If you’re wanting to see the cider making magic for yourself and get an Irish cider tour, you can reach out on Twitter at @cockageecider or on Instagram at @thecidermillslane , or call (their Google listing has the phone number).  It’s a small operation run by one person, but Mark can tell you whether a tour is possible.

Before coming to The Cider Mill, we spent the morning at Boyne Valley Farmhouse Cheese…you can read all about it (and GOATS!!!) here , or see my deeper post on what to do in the Boyne Valley area!

Gigs at Slane Castle are often pitched as a day out for all the family – a picnic with music, featuring a commercial headliner towering over a list of radio/Spotify-friendly bands that act as increasing mood enhancers for the day. Not this time, however – unless, that is, you’re a member of a metal music-loving family that, from dusk to dawn, pushes the volume slider into the red.

Having virtually a full line-up of metal acts is an interesting choice for Slane’s 2019 concert (and a possible reason why the gig hasn’t sold out?). With the exception of nominal Belfast punk band Stiff Little Fingers – who, at a generous estimate, have about four songs, all from 1979, that a casual music fan might be familiar with – this day is metal from start to end.

It has been 10 years since headliners Metallica last played Ireland (Marlay Park in Dublin), so the avid follower will be waiting to see what’s in store when they present their WorldWired Tour production.

It has been a long time coming. At their 2009 Marlay Park gig, they were plugging their ninth studio album, Death Magnetic; this time around, they’re promoting their 10th studio work, 2016’s Hardwired … to Self-Destruct. The band have been on tour in support of the album since late 2016, starting officially in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and finishing this year, in early November, in Auckland, New Zealand. In the meantime, they have a tranche of European dates to complete (their final show on this particular leg of the tour is in Mannheim, Germany, August 25th).

Hardcore fans

The band are noted for stretching the boundaries of their back catalogue, and the six European shows so far have cast Metallica in a generally experimental mood, performing a selection of songs for the first time in many years. Again, this is a nod to the fans who listen to the albums, song by song, and not just those who pick up on the best-known. Not that Metallica foolishly renounce the work that made them famous and wealthy – you can bet your last euro that the likes of Master of Puppets, Enter Sandman, Seek & Destroy, Welcome Home (Sanitarium) and Nothing Else Matters will make it on to the set list. As will, beyond any doubt whatsoever, a cover of Whiskey in the Jar, which is now a tradition for their Irish concerts.

And what of the other support acts – Sweden’s Ghost (who make their Irish debut), Norway’s Bokassa, and – the music act that will start the metal mayhem love-in – Dublin’s Fangclub?

The members of extreme metal group Ghost dress up in transposed Catholic priest attire, wear masks, rarely reveal their names, and are referred to as the Nameless Ghouls. (Forgetting their backstage passes could be problematic.) Norway’s hardcore/stoner trio Bokassa mix (says Revolver magazine) “pummelling hardcore rhythms with bong-friendly riffage”. Fangclub, meanwhile, are the young north Co Dublin chaps who will have the unenviable task of playing their extremely impressive songs (some from their forthcoming second album, Vulture Culture) to people slowly filtering into the venue grounds.

All in all, a great day for the country’s metal community in a celebrated outdoor venue. May the rain gods stay away.

Great tour with Luis. He started out the tour with a very informative history lesson and then proceeded to point out many things that we wouldn’t have known to look for ourselves. He was also pretty funny and our kids enjoyed the tour.

I went on the old city tour with Olivia. She was great she had such a good energy and make everyone around her enjoy the morning. I highly recommend this tour with Olivia.

Olivia walked us around the beautiful city Valencia. And it was amazing. Highly recommended for someone who wants to get around the city and the best places to eat out

The gothic tour with Dan and the gaudi with Pablo were both so amazing! They both had really great info and were very friendly. I would say the gaudi tour was my favorite tho! :)

We went to the Gaudí tour with Pablo and he was great!! Very informative, great recommendations, and a fun guy too.

I did the Gaudi tour with Pablo, the Creepy Tour with Claudia, and the pub crawl with Diego. They are all literally the best people ever. Can't wait to go back! Hugs Forever!

Travis Kelce Grooves While Taylor Swift Performs 'Look What You Made Me Do' at Her Singapore Show

The NFL star and pals took in the fifth night of Swift's six-show run at National Stadium in Kallang

Travis Kelce is standing up to support girlfriend Taylor Swift !

While attending the pop superstar's fifth Eras Tour performance in Singapore on Friday night, the Kansas City Chiefs star, 34, was spotted dancing during the concert.

In video footage posted on X taken from the stands, the tight end smiled and swayed to “Look What You Made Me Do” alongside friends outside a suite.

Later in the concert, Kelce was seen dancing alongside the stage during "Karma," and smiled appreciatively when Swift, 34, sang the lyric she changed for him: "Karma is the guy on the Chiefs, coming straight home to me."

Wearing a short-sleeved white shirt and black-and-white printed pants, the NFL star took in the show, which is part of a six-night residency at Singapore’s National Stadium in Kallang.

Kelce's friend Harry Clark also shared a Boomerang video of himself wearing an Eras Tour wristband on his Instagram Story and posted a video of Swift performing on stage with the caption, "GO TAY TAY."

For Kelce, the trip to Singapore capped a notable week.

On Monday, his brother Jason announced his retirement from the NFL after 13 seasons in the league.

Travis was on hand at the press conference, and could be seen wiping away tears while he cried along with his brother, who frequently paused on the dais when emotion overcame him.

Two days later on the brothers’ New Heights podcast, the siblings recapped the long-rumored announcement of Jason’s retirement — and Travis once again got emotional about the experience .

“You’ve always been a step ahead of me in this game,” Travis told his brother. “It’s always been like I had that flotation device right there. To have you out of it, man it feels empty. It definitely feels like … it’s complete.”

Left with their memories — which span from childhood games to playing together at the University of Cincinnati to facing off in the NFL, and most notably in Super Bowl LVII — Travis summed up the years with his trademark mixture of humor and intensity.

“It was a fun-ass journey to watch,” he told Jason. “And like I said yesterday, I just appreciate you, man, showing me the way and bringing us all along on the journey, big guy.”

The brothers also made time for some fun that evening in Cleveland, where they cheered the Cavaliers on to victory against the Boston Celtics on Tuesday, and also got the bobblehead treatment .

The Kelces were the guests of honor at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, where fans who attended the game received a one-of-a-kind bobblehead featuring the brothers in signature Cleveland jerseys.

The Cavs shared a video of the brothers approving the bobblehead dolls. "I look way better than I was expecting," Jason said.

Taylor swift fans defend travis kelce after he's seen texting at 'eras' tour, travis kelce swifties defend him .... after he's seen texting at her show, 2.5k 3/8/2024 3:23 pm pt.

Swifties are coming to Travis Kelce 's defense after he was caught texting during Taylor Swift 's recent "Eras" tour concert ... with the message being, give the guy a break!

Check out the video ... you see the Chiefs tight end being filmed by a fellow concertgoer at the Singapore show he went to this week -- and while Taylor was belting out "I Knew You Were Trouble" ... TK was checking his phone, right at the peak of the song.

The person who filmed this seemed to be throwing some shade Travis's way -- by suggesting he wasn't being attentive enough .... with a caption, reading "It's giving supporting bf."

Despite what the TikToker might've been trying to imply here -- T-Swift's legion wasn't biting ... with a ton of people jumping to speak up for Travis ... and rightly pointing out how ridiculous any type of scrutiny or criticism over this really is. Dude's just checking his phone!

A few Swifties even noted that this is the first time that Travis has ever been seen looking at his phone while cheering on his sweetheart.

Besides, we know Travis is a supportive boyfriend -- evidenced by the fact that he's literally there in Singapore right now. As we reported earlier today, Trav was having a great time at the concert -- he was even caught dancing his tail off to Taylor's jams.

There's no denying he's a true fan of the Grammy winner ... remember, Travis attended the "Eras" tour before he and the pop star even got together. And, since getting with her -- he's made a huge effort to be at some of her international tours ... including in Australia.

Clearly, he's a supportive significant other ... and it seems her fans know that quite well. Here's hoping Trav can shake off the shade ... because it really ain't all that deep.

The guy's allowed to look away for a moment, y'all ... it should go without saying.

We're covering all things Taylor on the new Swift-Tea Podcast , available on all podcast platforms.
