The year 2018 marks our 30th anniversary

Since turning a love for the community and wildlife of Churchill, Manitoba, for photography, adventure, and the challenge of improving each new Polar Rover, into a thriving family-run business. We're excited to commemorate such an important year and share the journey we've taken since the days of 'Old Blue' (the first Polar Rover)!

When you ask the people who have been deeply connected to the growth of Great White Bear Tours over the past 30 years, you will hear many of the same words of endearment and strength about its owners Marilyn and Don Walkoski, and about the business. Yet, the same can be said about each and every individual who –throughout the years – have been there to support and guide the endeavours of Great White Bear Tours. It goes without saying that due to their dedication, Great White Bear Tours would not be where it is today.

As polar bear central, Churchill acts as a home base for conservation and outreach efforts.  Polar Bear International House  is a public center, which people can visit to learn about polar bears and polar bear research.

For the best polar bear viewing experience, you’ll need to board a specially designed Tundra Buggy and journey out into the Churchill Wildlife Management Area (CWMA). It was the creation of this original tundra vehicle, the Tundra Buggy, that allowed venturing amongst polar bears in Churchill. Specially designed for the northern landscape, these all-terrain vehicles allow access to remote locations, which are best for  safely viewing and photographing wildlife .

Since the number of visitors to the CWMA is highly restricted, your chances of seeing the bears up close is excellent. As well as capturing incredible, up-close photographs of polar bears, you’ll see other wildlife such as arctic fox, ptarmigan, and snowy owl.

#1 Travel tip: When to visit Churchill

These guides enjoy sharing fascinating stories and answering questions about the remarkable wildlife of Churchill.

Safety Measures to Protect Visitors and Wildlife:

By adhering to these guidelines, visitors can safely explore the wilderness with peace of mind, knowing that their adventure protects the natural habitat of polar bears and other wildlife.

Natural Environment of Churchill's Arctic Wildlife

Polar bear walks along the snowy shore of the Hudson Bay

Churchill's Arctic wildlife thrives within a diverse ecosystem. The region is defined by its proximity to Hudson Bay, the expansive tundra, and the sprawling boreal forest.

Unique Features:

1. hudson bay:.

Hudson Bay provides a crucial habitat for various marine life, including beluga whales and seals. It also influences the seasonal movements and behavior of polar bears. This is one of the reasons why Churchill is a prime location for polar bear tours.

The vast tundra of Churchill is a land of rugged beauty, characterized by low-lying vegetation, lichens, and mosses. This treeless expanse supports an abundance of species, including polar bears, Arctic foxes, and Arctic hares. Migratory birds flock to the region during the summer.

3. Boreal Forest:

The boreal forest surrounding Churchill showcases a different facet of the region's natural environment. This vast woodland is home to diverse species, including black bears, wolves, moose, and a variety of bird species. The boreal forest provides a vital habitat for these creatures, offering shelter and sustenance within its dense canopy.

Key Species:

1. polar bears :.

Churchill is known as the polar bear capital of the world. A significant population of these majestic creatures inhabit the area, particularly during the fall months. These months are prime polar bear season.

2. Arctic foxes :

With their small ears and thick, white coat, these foxes are well-suited to the Arctic tundra, where they blend seamlessly into the snowy landscape. Their coats change to brown in the spring or summer.

3. Arctic hares :

Arctic hares can be found darting across the tundra, their white fur serving as camouflage against the snow, protecting them from predators.

#2 Travel tip: Crossing the street

Churchill has a small population and only a few shops and restaurants. Don’t worry too much about looking for traffic before you cross the street, but always look left and right for a polar bear!

churchill polar bear tours from winnipeg

As Churchill is a small town in a remote location, there are limited accommodation options. There are cozy inns and simple bed-and-breakfasts, rather than 5-star resorts. For example, the Tundra Inn is a charming family-run property offering comfortable, spacious rooms. For the months of October and November, during peak polar bear season, it is best to reserve Churchill accommodation early.

Winnipeg is usually the starting point for polar bear tours, since it’s easy to catch a flight to Churchill from here. Our polar bear packages often include a night in a Winnipeg airport hotel before your flight to Churchill. If you want to extend your vacation, you could stay in Winnipeg longer — add on nights before or after your polar bear viewing adventure.

churchill polar bear tours from winnipeg

When you imagine viewing polar bears in Canada, a warm sunny day might not be what you’re picturing. But summer is when polar bears first return to Churchill, Manitoba. After spending the winter hunting seals on the ice of Hudson Bay, these impressive animals make their way back to the Churchill area in early to mid-summer, when the sea ice begins to melt.

Along with the opportunity to see Canada's famous polar bears, a visit to the Hudson Bay region in summer offers warmer weather than in the traditional fall viewing season (October/November). There’s also plenty of chances to see other Canadian wildlife up close and personal in the ruggedly beautiful tundra and taiga — the forests of cold, subarctic regions — landscapes of the Manitoba coastline. During the months of July and August, the Churchill area is also a fantastic place to see beluga whales who migrate into the warm, shallow waters of the Churchill River to give birth and feed on fish.

Think of this itinerary as just a starting point. Our experienced Canadian Insiders will create a personalized experience for you that matches your schedule, travel style and budget.

Day 1 – Arrive in Winnipeg Welcome to Winnipeg! After checking into your airport hotel, take some time to explore the city. Visit the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the first museum solely dedicated to the evolution of human rights, or to the Forks, one of the city’s most popular gathering places and a great place to purchase souvenirs from local Canadian artisans. This evening, meet your fellow travelers at an information session led by your hosts.

To ensure you are comfortable in Churchill’s cold temperatures, ask us about winter clothing rentals. We highly recommend you do this early, as availability is limited!

Overnight in a Winnipeg airport hotel.

Day 2 – Winnipeg to Churchill Early this morning, fly from Winnipeg to Churchill. Journey over the tundra and plains of the north – the bird’s eye view is spectacular.

Upon arrival, drive past various points of interest in and surrounding Churchill on an interpretive tour. You’ll have a chance to photograph the Polar Bear Holding facility amongst other highlights. Stop by the Polar Bears International House to learn about ongoing polar bear research, and the Parks Canada Interpretive Centre, where you can discover Churchill’s history through interactive displays and wildlife dioramas.

Overnight in a Churchill hotel.

Day 3 – Polar Bear Viewing Why is Churchill known as the Polar Bear Capital of the World? Well, because large numbers of the bears congregate near town each fall while they wait for the ice to form on Hudson Bay.

This morning, board a specially designed Tundra Buggy and journey into the Churchill Wildlife Management Area for your first chance to see polar bears in the wild. Since the number of visitors to the CWMA is highly restricted, your chances of seeing the bears up close is excellent. This is prime polar bear habitat! Your knowledgeable guide will provide insights along way.

Day 4 – Polar Bear Viewing and Return to Winnipeg Enjoy another extraordinary day exploring the Churchill Wildlife Management Area onboard a Tundra Buggy. As well as capturing incredible, up-close photographs of polar bears, you’ll likely see other wildlife such as arctic fox, ptarmigan, and snowy owl. When you arrive back in Churchill, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight back to Winnipeg.

Day 5 – End of Canada Vacation Package – Depart with Fond Memories This morning, check out from your hotel and depart Winnipeg. Leave Canada with once-in-a-lifetime memories from your polar bear adventure in Churchill.

Travel to Churchill, situated in northern Canada, to see the world’s greatest concentration of polar bears. Learn more about their evolutionary history and learn about the role ecotourism plays in the protection of polar bears and Arctic biodiversity.

Begin in Winnipeg, the capital of the Canadian province of Manitoba, before heading north to Churchill, located on the shores of Hudson Bay. You will spend the week exploring the area in search of a variety of wildlife species, including the most well-known local resident, the polar bear. A unique part of this tour is the exploration of Churchill's tundra area using a Polar Rover vehicle, a tundra buggy aimed to have minimal impact on the wildlife’s natural surroundings. With huge windows and a see-through steel outdoor viewing deck, it allows closer access to the bears and other wildlife.

You will be accompanied by experts who will take a deep dive into the life and natural history of the polar bear through a series of talks, walking seminars and fireside chats, covering the following topics:

  • The geology of the Canadian Arctic landscape
  • The role of epontic communities and the role sea ice plays in the Arctic
  • A deep dive into the life and natural history of Ursus maritimus – the polar bear
  • Adaptations of flora and fauna to arid, Arctic ecosystems
  • The evolutionary history of polar bears, including the many unique adaptations that distinguish them from their grizzly bear cousins
  • The role of protected areas and ecotourism in the protection of polar bears and Arctic biodiversity
  • Understanding landscape-level phenomena, including arctic mirages, “sun dogs” and the northern lights

DAY 1: WINNIPEG ARRIVAL

You will begin your adventure in Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba. On arrival into Winnipeg airport, you will be met by your expedition leader and transferred to your hotel.

Depending on your arrival flight time, you may have time to explore Winnipeg, which is home to many cultural attractions and is known for its ethnic diversity. Alternatively, you can relax at your hotel.

This evening, meet with your expedition leader and the rest of the group for a welcome meeting, where the plan for this week will be discussed. You will then get kitted out for your adventure in your cold weather gear. Afterwards, head out for dinner.

DAY 2: FLY TO CHURCHILL

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Winnipeg airport to board your privately chartered flight to Churchill.

The town of Churchill is situated in northern Manitoba on the edge of Hudson Bay. Established in the early 18th century, Churchill grew into a prosperous trading post, but declined in the 19th century when it was bypassed by faster overland routes. Today, the community is made up of a mix of Inuit, Cree and non-Indigenous people. It has only recently found a new role as the "polar bear capital of the world". Each autumn, the area’s polar bears venture onto the newly frozen pack ice to hunt for seals.

This evening, head out into the tundra for your first glimpse of polar bears aboard custom-built Polar Rovers vehicles. These are heated and wheelchair accessible, and they have reclining seats, easily opening windows and an outdoor, grated, see-through deck. They have also been fitted with comfortable washrooms that have flushing toilets.

After time exploring the tundra, you will return to your hotel for a fireside talk with your expedition leader introducing the area and the wildlife that call this part of the world home. You will also have the opportunity to learn more about local residents' relationships with the polar bears, and how they have learned to live in relative harmony through the town's polar bear holding facility, aka "polar bear jail".

DAYS 3 TO 4: POLAR BEAR VIEWING

During both days, you will head out in the Polar Roamer vehicles during daylight hours to explore the tundra in search of polar bears.

Polar bears are known to congregate in this area each fall as they wait for Hudson Bay to freeze, signaLling the start of the winter seal-hunting season. Your expedition leader will know the best places to observe them without disturbing their natural environment.

While you are out exploring the tundra from the Polar Roamers, your expedition leader will give talks from the vehicle that explain the bears’ behaviour and how they thrive in such a harsh environment.

In the evening, you will gather for dinner and presentations on wildlife and local cultures.

DAY 5: EXPLORING CHURCHILL AND EVENING ON TUNDRA

Today, you will follow the coastal road on a drive to Cape Merry. Keep an eye out for Arctic foxes and Arctic hares, which can be spotted enroute. Look closely for them, as their white winter coats offer excellent camouflage later in the season when the ground is covered with snow.

If the skies are clear, your nighttime tundra excursion might reveal one of nature’s most exhilarating experiences: a chance to view the northern lights away from town. Though never predictable, the auroral display typically starts as a pale glow in the northern sky.  The lights often begin to undulate in shimmering curtains of colour, most typically green, but occasionally red or violet.

DAY 6: DOG SLEDDING AND FLY TO WINNIPEG

This morning, you will have the opportunity to enjoy an authentic dog sled ride, a highlight for many! Join a local musher and their team, spending time with the lively and affectionate dogs before taking turns riding behind them on an exhilarating trot through the boreal forest.

Enjoy a farewell lunch together before flying back to Winnipeg via your private charted flight. From here, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Winnipeg for your final talk.

Enjoy a farewell dinner at your hotel in Winnipeg with the group and your expedition leader.

DAY 7: WINNIPEG DEPARTURE

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight home.

  • Experience intimate polar bear encounters, spending five days exploring the Churchill area among the world’s greatest concentration of polar bears
  • Travel aboard the newest fleet of technologically advanced Polar Rovers, with huge windows and a see-through steel outdoor viewing deck, to get you closest to the bears
  • Enjoy an exclusive tundra excursion after dark that provides a unique perspective, including the chance, on a clear night, to view the northern lights away from town
  • Accompanied throughout by an insightful tour leader who will offer fascinating talks

Meet the expert

Your polar bear expedition leaders for this tour will have been guiding bear tours for more than 10 years each and will receive additional training and resources from WWF’s top scientists, ensuring a superlative, interpretive experience. Your expedition leader will meet you in Winnipeg and travel with the group the entire way, sharing their wealth of knowledge and insight at every turn.

PACE AND PHYSICALITY

This tour requires very little walking. However, you must be able to walk up and down stairs. The Polar Rover vehicles are designed to travel over the tundra for polar bear observation and can sometimes offer a bumpy ride. You must be prepared for below-freezing temperatures and slippery surfaces (winter jackets and boots will be loaned for the duration of the tour).

POLAR BEAR VIEWING

An important note on polar bear viewing: some of the polar bear sightings are up close, while others are from afar. It is important to remember that while there is no better opportunity to see polar bears in the wild than this Churchill trip, the experience is weather-dependent. That means viewing polar bears and the distance at which you may see them is unpredictable and not guaranteed.

Accommodation

Fort Garry Hotel, Winnipeg

The Fort Garry Hotel is one of Canada's elegant railway hotels, built by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in 1913, which have long been a symbol of this prairie city's importance as a transportation, commerce and culture hub. Located downtown, just one block from Union Station, this historic landmark is built in the French chateau style and is Winnipeg's finest hotel, retaining the air of gracious opulence from an earlier era. Relax in the lounge, enjoy a drink in the antique bar or indulge in a sumptuous treatment at Ten Spa, an authentic Turkish-style bath and spa located on the top floor of the hotel.

Churchill (exact hotel to be confirmed closer to departure)

In the sub-Arctic frontier outpost of Churchill, with a population of just under 1000, hotels are small and basic. All hotel options are clean, comfortable and conveniently located in the centre of town. Every room has an en suite bathroom with a shower.

For a Richer Northern Lights Experience, Go With an Indigenous Guide

By Megan Spurrell

Image may contain Nature Night Outdoors Sky Person and Aurora

“They say you can hear the northern lights crackle. Even after years of living amongst them, I’ve only heard it once,” says Dave Daley, a long-distance dog sledder and Métis tour guide based in Churchill, Canada. He was 250 miles north of home when it happened, crossing the Hudson Bay as his dogs stopped to look at the display, spanning shades of pink, green, and white. “The lights made a wall in front of us, and for 10 minutes we were in a trance. Why did they appear at this moment? It was my ancestors making sure I got to my destination safely.”

Daley is the Métis founder of tour company Wapusk Adventures , which he runs with his wife and two sons in the small Arctic town of Churchill (population 900)—a.k.a. the Polar Bear Capital of the World . Stories like this are what make his northern lights experiences unique. Instead of treating the lights as a rare entity to catch, or capture, he uses the natural phenomenon as a launchpad to share his heritage—and stories—with visitors to the far north. “We have a program we call Tipi Tales , where people come out in the summer, and I tell stories,” says Daley, who says warmer weather lends to better lights viewing. Guests get to meet his dozens of loving sled dogs (he's best known for offering dogsled rides) while chatting under the stars for a couple of hours, hoping to see the sky come to life. “My son, who is 28 and growing up in the north might share his experiences too," he says. "There’s a lot of oral history about the northern lights.” Daley hopes the lights will show—but with the right programming, it’s okay if they don’t.

Dogsledder Dave Daley (Métis) and his family offer northern lights experiences in Churchill, Canada.

Daley's company Wapusk Adventures invites travelers to cozy up in a tipi and hear stories while the aurora dance overheard.

In the same way that northern lights tourism in Churchill plays a supporting role to the hottest ticket in town, polar bear excursions, Indigenous storytelling is a way that Native travel guides are enriching aurora borealis viewing for visitors. It’s fitting, given that the lights have a long history of significance for Indigenous communities from Alaska to Lapland to Siberia . Doing so makes an evening about more than just getting the shot—perhaps a crucial frame-of-mind when pursuing an activity entirely dependent on changing weather conditions, and that offers zero guarantee of a sighting. “There’s no schedule to wildlife, and there’s no schedule to the northern lights,” says Daley.

There’s no one meaning as to what they represent, either. “I believe the Northern Lights are the souls of our ancestors watching over us,” says Daley. “Other people believe it’s our ancestors dancing in the sky; Inuit believe it’s their ancestors playing soccer with a walrus skull. Some tour companies get their people to whistle at the lights, to get them to dance—but some people believe they’ll come down and smack your soul [if you do that].” In a toasty tipi, waiting for the lights to appear, these stories shape the perspective travelers apply to the night sky. Or, if you join local Katie deMuelles (Métis) and Nanuk Operations , also in Churchill, that might take place in a warm yurt with local wine served.

“There are various understandings,” says Wilfred Buck (Opaskwayak Cree), a science facilitator at the Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre and an ‘Indigenous star lore expert.’ There are even multiple names within Buck’s nation alone: “My people call the Northern Lights wâwâhtêwa (the shimmering lights up in the sky) and cîpayak kâ-nîmihitocik, which refers to when they are dancing so bright that you can feel the energy, and the hair on your arms and neck will stand up.” And that's what, essentially, makes an Indigenous northern lights tour so unique: Depending on where in the world you go, you'll learn something new every time.

Some 3,000 miles away in Finnish Lapland, Aurora Holidays is a Sámi family-owned lodge north of the Arctic Circle in Utsjoki. They have been running northern lights tours with cultural storytelling elements for seven years. They also offer experiences that teach guests about Sámi traditions like reindeer herding, snowshoeing, and hiking under the midnight sun. During northern lights outings in the fall and winter, travelers warm up in a small hut beside the revered Teno river while guides contextualize the lights. You may hear stories about how the lights are believed to speak (and listen); or how others have traditionally feared them, staying inside while the aurora dances, just to be safe. “There are as many Indigenous perspectives as there are Sámi people,” says Jonna Wood, the company's marketing lead. “Though the culture and history is shared, the modern-day Sámi population is a varied bunch and not a stereotypical group that can be put in a box and labeled.”

In neighboring Kiruna, Sweden, Kerstin Nilsson (from the Leaváš Sámi community) doesn't plan her experiences around the lights. Rather, the display is a bonus to the Icelandic horse rides she and Mats Blind-Berg (Girjas Sámi) offer through their tour company, Ofelaš . To Nilsson, the “magic phenomenon” of the lights, and Indigenous interpretations of them, are a means of more broadly understanding the Sámi connection to the land. “It is not just the scientific way of looking at northern lights—it has to do with the way of living and thinking,” says Nilsson. “You need to be aware of what the nature is telling you.” On blustery horse rides, greeted by the aurora or not, Nilsson hopes travelers will pay attention to the world around them in the way that Sámi locals long have. It's the kind of experience that sticks with most travelers longer than any photo will.
