Kool & the Gang, masters in jazz, R&B, soul, funk, dance, disco and boogie. Active since 1964 their music remains timeless and loved by countless generations.

From 1964 the band performed at jazz events most notably those which took place in a small theater every Sunday, this was the start of the career for 13 year old Robert Bell, his brother and five of their friends.

Originally the ensemble were called the "Jazzics" but changed their name in 1969 in order to avoid confusion which was caused when they called themselves "Kool and the Flames" which was a name extremely similar to one in which James Brown was using at the time. This then caused the group to rename themselves to "Kool & the Gang". 1969 saw them signed to De-Lite Records under Gene Redd who owned the label.

In 1969 under De-Lite records the band released their self titled debut album "Kool & The Gang". It is considered to be a classic in funk music and has been sampled by over 10 artists since its release.

In 1975 the band released their very well received alum "Light Of Worlds" this received 3.5 stars from rolling stone and contained the very successful song "Higher Plane" this song was able to reach number 1 on the R&B charts.

Many Kool and the gang songs have gone on to feature on multiple platforms. Songs have been used in films such as "Baby Boy", multiple commercials such as a Nike shoe commercial starring LeBron James and even the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Kool and the Gang and are one the greatest disco bands ever. Their classic brand of jazz, soul, funk and disco never fails to get you dancing. Thankfully, they remain a highly active touring band. Needless to say, though, the band has had numerous line-up changes over their forty-odd year history.

You can imagine my excitement when I got the opportunity to see the legends perform at the Wildflower Festival in Texas this May. The set opened with a rendition of 1985 chart-topper, ‘Fresh.’ ‘We gonna get this party started!’ The front man yelled. ‘Let Me Hear You!’ he shouted to the crowd. We obeyed, yelling and whooping.

Kool and the Gang gave one incredible performance. Musical skill and funky dance moves abounded. They delivered the hits with finesse. It was a thrill to see them perform ‘Jungle Boogie and ‘Get Down on It.’ The evening ended with ‘Good Times.’ We all sang and danced along enthusiastically and the singers pleased the crowd be closing with the lyrics, ‘we hope you had a good time.’ Suddenly it was the end of the gig. The evening had whipped by in frenzy of jazz funk thrill. The only indicator that we’d been there for an hour and a half was the fatigue in our legs from all that dancing. Take any opportunity you get to see Kool and the Gang live!

Still absolute masters of the funk-soul-pop genre, Kool & The Gang haven't lost one ounce of their groove, despite having been a touring band since 1964. Incorporating jazz, brass band and funk influences, the New Jersey music veterans are responsible for some of THE quintessential funky disco classics of the past 30 years- songs such as 'Celebration', 'Ladies' Night', 'Get Down On It', and the belter of an opening title track used by Quentin Tarantino in the eponymous Pulp Fiction, 'Jungle Boogie'.

These massive, soulful dance grooves were all staples of the Gang's Glastonbury set a few years ago, which pulled an enormous crowd- and as soon as that deep slap bass, full horn section and funky drumbeat kicked in, everyone was gettin' down.

For me, the highlight of their live set was the thunderous, horn-blasting 'Jungle Boogie', which you can't help but shimmy to, as well as their classic disco hit, 'Fresh'. The sheer level of musicianship from the entire band (at least 10 members, led by vocalist James 'J.T.' Taylor, onstage at any one time), was very impressive, and the whole bunch of them seemed to be responding to the crowd and having one big party up there.

(Actually 7.15) Security was good. We sat in our seats until 9 when K a t G came on. The support band was dissapointing. We love Kool and the Gang but was dissapointed by the late start and the fact that they indulged themselves over playing the music that the fans and us went there to hear. We left early as the late start meant we could not stay for the whole concert due to the need to catch the last train home.

Kool and the Gang was great... they started out with the youthful songs...then when horn section, (they're famous for) got started..it was on...the whole crowd was up ...out of there seats...rockin' to the beat...awesome show..one of the older band members kept us totally entertained, dancing,flipping hilarious....

I enjoyed every moment. Great band, music... Even the newer members of the group are great... I'll stay fresh and get down on it for a ladies night celebration with Kool and the Gang anytime... Loved it... I wished they performed a little longer

Super funky and awesome show takes you right back to the 79's with all classic hits from Cherish to Ladies night and Get Down. Great vibe and energy from all the band members and a few new faces full of talent. A winner gig all round!

I didn't go. Tickets were too damn expensive. I wished that sometimes these venues you guys put out here are a bit affordable. They would have been an awesome group to enjoy because it would take me back to high school. But OFW!!!

Excellent. A lot of energy from the band. Great show. Thanks guys for amazing evening, I enjoyed a lot with my wife. Old memories from the 70s. Parking easy to access, venue is a great place for a concert, sound was really good.

Had a great time at this show. The music brought back lots of fun memories and the band showed high energy and great talent. I'll be happy to see/hear their show again, whenever they are in town.

Some of the most fun I've had in 2017. They played all the classic hits and even did a few covers. Everyone was into it. Don't miss these legends if you have the chance.

It’s about to get funky.

Kool and the Gang , celebrating their 60th anniversary in 2024, are heading out on a quick 15-concert tour that will take them to venues all over North America from May through October 2024 .

That includes a stop in both New York and New Jersey for the “Jungle Boogie” legends.

On Friday, May 12 they’ll “Get Down On It” at Westbury, NY’s NYCB Theatre .

Two months later, Kool and The Gang will celebrate “Ladies Night” at Atlantic City, NJ’s Etess Arena at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on July 21.

In July, Kool and the Gang will drop their 34th studio album “People Just Wanna Have Fun.”

“You’ve got the funk, the jazzier tracks; we have a few ballads on there,” said lead singer and founder Robert “Kool” Bell in a press release about the new album.

“Then there are songs that cross over to a pop sort of thing. We go from the ‘70s, the ‘80s, right into now. It’s old school, it’s new school — we kinda captured it all here. With all our music over the years, people have had fun. So I’d say this album just about sums it all up.”

The band is missing original members Ronald “Khalis” Bell and Dennis “D.T.” Thomas; the two passed away in 2020 and 2021, respectively

Kool & The Gang is set to celebrate 60 years as R&B and funk veterans in 2024. However, ahead of that monumental feat, the group is releasing a new album and will be embarking on an international tour .

People Just Wanna Have Fun is slated for release on July 14, towards the end of their 17-city tour.

George “Funky” Brown, fellow founding member and producer of the LP, added insight on the process during the height of the pandemic . “It’s all done live. Nothing was flown in. We made sure we had the ultraviolet lights and the sprays and the masks. Nobody got sick. We kept the number of people in the studio way down,” stated the 74-year-old.

The album’s lead single, “Let’s Party,” debuted back in October, but an Afrobeats remix is premiering on April 21. Both Bell and Brown view this project—the group’s 34th album—as a “summation of their long career” as it will be some of the last work from the band’s members, Ronald “Khalis” Bell and Dennis “D.T.” Thomas, who passed in 2020 and 2021 respectively.

Since their start in 1964, the group has garnered two GRAMMYs, seven American Music Awards, a BET Soul Train Lifetime Achievement Award , and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Plus, Kool’s bass guitar is featured in the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC and their 1980 hit, “Celebration” was inducted into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2021 along with Janet Jackson’s Control , Labelle’s “ Lady Marmalade ,” and Nas’ Illmatic .

Kool & the Gang Sang ‘Celebration’ When They Learned They Entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Kool & the Gang bandleader Robert “Kool” Bell learned the group was entering the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Sunday night when Ryan Seacrest and Lionel Richie delivered the announcement live on American Idol. “We had a party,” says Bell. “I was here with friends at my house. When they said “ Kool and the Gang ,” we all sang ‘Celebration.’ It was like, ‘Celebrate good times, come on!'”

The afternoon after the celebration, Bell hopped on Zoom with Rolling Stone to talk about the overdue honor, the bittersweet feeling of celebrating right after the loss of many of his bandmates, including his brother Ronald, writing some of their biggest hits, memories of touring with Van Halen in 2012, and why they have no plans for a farewell tour.

Why do you think it took so damn long? That’s a good question. Every year, people would say, “You’re not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? I thought you was in there by now.” I said, “No. Maybe one day they’ll recognize us and give us some love. After all, I’m a Buckeye. I’m from Ohio. Give me a break.”

What does this mean to you on a personal level? On a personal level, we have joined with a lot of greats to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And it’s called the “Rock and Roll” Hall of Fame. I did 48 shows with Van Halen. I did shows with Kid Rock. I played with the Dave Matthews Band, Elton John, Rod Stewart. That is rock and roll, isn’t it?

And now you’re in the same club as James Brown, the Beatles, Aretha Franklin… It’s great company to be in.

Are you in touch with him? Do you think he’ll come? I just spoke to him the other day. He went, “I’ll see you in Cleveland!” We have no plans yet, but he sang “Celebration” with us when we won the Songwriters [Hall of Fame] Award [in 2018].

It’s a really good class this year with Cher, Dave Matthews, Ozzy Osbourne, Foreigner… We did some shows with Foreigner a couple of years ago. I just called their agent and said, “Man, we should get together with Foreigner and go back to Europe again. We can do a ‘Rock the World’ tour. How about that?”

If this is overdue for Kool and the Gang, it’s really overdue for Dionne Warwick. Yeah. We share a publicist. I was told she’s really happy. We played with her many years ago with the San Diego Philharmonic Orchestra. It was us and Dionne with a 62-piece orchestra. It was great.

You could do an amazing version of “Get Down On It” at the end of the night with everyone from the show. Wouldn’t that be great?

It’s very hard to think of a group with songs that get the crowd going quite like your stuff. It’s impossible to hear one of your songs and stay seated. Oh yeah. It’s like “Open Sesame” in Saturday Night Fever . That got John Travolta on the dance floor. We should bring John Travolta out at the Hall of Fame when we play “Open Sesame.” Hey John, come out and do your step like you did all those years ago. [ Laughs ]

Some people refuse to understand why hip-hop acts are in the Hall of Fame. It’s always made perfect sense to me. Me too. And on the hip-hop side, we’re celebrating 50 years of hip-hop right now. And we’re the most sampled band in hip-hop.

Cher is a little bitter since it took her so long to get in. Do you hope she comes? I hope she does. I could be bitter too. It’s been 60 years. Come on, man! [ Laughs ] But we finally made it.

What was it like touring with Van Halen in 2012? It was great. We were playing the Glastonbury Music Festival in England. We were on the show with Coldplay and several rock groups. David Lee Roth happened to see us on the BBC. He calls up Eddie and Alex and goes, “Hey, I have the perfect group to go out with us.” They said, “Who?” He goes, “Kool & the Gang.” They go, “Man, what you been smoking over there?”

He goes, “Yeah, Kool & the Gang. You forget that back in the day, we used to play ‘Jungle Boogie’ and stuff in the clubs. Sixty percent of our audience is ladies. They know ‘Ladies’ Night.’ We have ‘Jump.’ They have ‘Celebration.’ These were both hits in the Eighties. Let’s go out and have a party.” And man, 48 shows! It was something! It was a great combination.

And Kid Rock saw us play in Detroit. He said, “I want you to play 20 shows with me.” We went, “Kid, we can’t do 20 shows with you. We have to go to Europe.” He goes, “Then give me ten.” We did ten shows with Kid Rock. And then Dave Matthews Band, Elton John, Rod Stewart.

What was Eddie Van Halen like? He was great. He said to me, “I feel a little nervous.” I said, “What do you mean you’re nervous? You’re one of the greatest guitarists out there.” He said, “Yeah, but it’s been a while, man.” [ Laughs ] But every night was great.

Right now, we aren’t doing anything until the top of the year, 2025. We want to put out a cool jazz record. We want to do an album called The Jazzy Acts Are Back , and take everything full circle for us. I’m not sure I’ve ever been to a wedding or bar mitzvah where I didn’t hear “Celebration.” What’s it feel like to have written a song that’s going to outlive all of us? It’s been a blessing. It started off with “Ladies’ Night.” J.T. had just joined the band. My wife and I were hanging out in New York at Studio 54. We realized there was a Ladies’ Night. I went back to George Brown, who did the music. I said, “I got a pretty good title for our first single with J.T. ‘Ladie’s Night.” My brother said, “‘Ladies’ Night?’ They have those all over the world.” The tag of “Ladies’ Night” is “Come on let’s all celebrate/Oh it’s ladies night and the feeling’s right.” We were at the American Music Awards and we went, “That’s going to be our next song!”

Lots of band are doing farewell tours these days. Do you ever think about that? No. We aren’t ready to throw in the towel yet.

Legendary Grammy Award-winning funk and soul band Kool & The Gang have today announced a very special UK headline show at Liverpool M&S Bank Arena on Friday 26th July. Joining them as special guests will be Liverpool’s soul legends, The Real Thing .

Celebrating their 60th anniversary this year, Kool & The Gang have performed continuously longer than any R&B group in history and their bulletproof funk and jazzy arrangements have also made them the most sampled R&B band of all time. The heavily-in-demand band has continued to tour the world, appearing most recently alongside Kid Rock, Dave Matthews Band, Elton John, The Roots, and a 50-city tour with the legendary rock band, Van Halen.

For all car journeys it's best to follow the white on brown tourist route signs for the Waterfront. These signs are visible on the major routes into the city. Exhibition Centre Liverpool is situated on the Kings Dock directly adjacent to the south side of the Albert Dock. Upon arrival, the Kings Dock entrance is clearly sign posted.

From the North...

Leave the M6 at junction 26 and follow signs for M58 Liverpool. Follow to end of M58 and then take signs for A59 Liverpool. Continue to follow Liverpool City Centre until picking up signs for the Waterfront. 

From the South...

Leave the M6 at junction 21A and take the M62 to Liverpool. At the end of the M62 follow signs for Liverpool City Centre along Edge Lane, picking up and following signs for Waterfront. 

From the south...

Avanti West Coast operates hourly, direct services from London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street (with a journey time of just over two hours). Other long-distance rail services also operate into Liverpool Lime Street station.

M&S Bank Arena is a 20-minute walk from Lime Street or a short taxi ride. You can also transfer at Lime Street onto the underground Wirral Line trains to James Street station (10 minute walk) or catch the CityLink Route C4 (7am – 8pm) directly to the venue. If travelling from outside Merseyside, you can catch an underground train to James Street station from Lime Street station, inclusive of the cost of your train ticket.

Flying into Liverpool John Lennon Airport...

A taxi from the airport to the city centre will take approximately 20 minutes or the express bus service Route 500 will take approximately 25 minutes, dropping you off within a five minute walk of M&S Bank Arena, while Manchester’s international airport is just 45 minutes away by car.

Kool & the Gang , officially launched in 1969. Thanks to iconic songs like “Celebration”, “Cherish”, “Jungle Boogie”, “Summer Madness”, and “Open Sesame”, they’ve earned two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, 25 Top Ten R&B hits, 9 Top Ten Pop hits, and 31 gold and platinum albums.

From Nairobi to Newark, Kool & the Gang has performed continuously longer than any R&B group in history and their bulletproof funk and jazzy arrangements have also made them the most sampled R&B band of all time.

A reviewer recently called their performance “a 24-karat show’ and every year, even after a half-century on the road, yields a non-stop schedule of shows across the globe. The heavily-in-demand band has continued to tour the world, appearing most recently alongside Kid Rock, Dave Matthews Band , Elton John, The Roots , and a 50-city tour with the legendary rock band, Van Halen .

In 1964, Ronald Bell and his brother, Robert “Kool” Bell, joined Jersey City neighbourhood friends Robert “Spike” Mickens, Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas, Ricky Westfield, George Brown, and Charles Smith to create a unique musical blend of jazz, soul and funk. At first calling themselves the Jazziacs, the band went through various names – The Dimensions , The Soul Town Band , Kool & the Flames – before settling on their famous moniker.

Over the next several years they solidified their musical chemistry on the rough-and-tumble East Coast music scenes supporting acts like Bill Cosby, Ritchie Havens and Richard Pryor.

The band’s stellar reputation grew with each album, but 1973’s gold disc Wild & Peaceful took Kool & The Gang to another level (#6 R&B, #33 Pop), spurred by the immortal party anthems “Funky Stuff”, “Hollywood Swinging” and the platinum smash “Jungle Boogie”.

Hits like Higher Plane (#1 R&B), the classic “Summer Madness” (featured on the Grammy-winning movie soundtrack Rocky ) and LPs Spirit of the Boogie , Love & Understanding and Open Sesame followed.

The latter’s title track was featured on the top-selling movie soundtrack of all time, Saturday Night Fever , earning the group their second Grammy. In 1979, Kool & the Gang unveiled a smooth new sound with “Ladies Night”. Produced by the legendary Pop/jazz musician Eumir Deodato, it became their first platinum album.

The #1 R&B title track reached #8 at Pop. It was followed by Too Hot (#3 R&B, #5 Pop). The 80s would see them dominate the mainstream, starting with the double platinum-selling album Celebrate (driven by the international monster hit “Celebration”, which spent six weeks an top the R&B chart and became a #1 Pop single).

“Celebration”, which played as the American hostages returned from Iran, remains de rigueur at joyous occasions worldwide. The smashes “Get Down On It”, “Take My Heart”, “Let’s Go Dancing”, “Joanna”, “Tonight”, “Misled”, the #1 R&B, #2Pop giant “Cherish” and the #1 R&B anthem “Fresh” (these last three from the multi-platinum LP Emergency) solidified the group’s international stardom.

 Today, the group enjoys global fame and recognition and a following that spans generations due in part to the groups widely sampled catalogue. Kool & the Gang ’s drum beats, bass, guitar and signature horn lines lace the tracks of numerous artists including the Beastie Boys , Jay-Z, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Cypress Hill, and P. Diddy.

Kool & the Gang is the most sampled band in hip-hop by far. Their music is also featured on the soundtracks for rocky, Saturday Night Fever , Pulp Fiction , Wreck-It Ralph and countless others.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the names of 16 artists or other musical figures who will be inducted in 2024. It’s a diverse list that stretches from R&B/rock pioneer Big Mama Thornton to pop superstars Cher and Dionne Warwick, and from ’70s-rooted rockers like Peter Frampton, Foreigner and Ozzy Osbourne to ’90s icons the Dave Matthews Band , Mary J. Blige and A Tribe Called Quest.

For the first time, the inductees were announced as part of an “American Idol” broadcast, during a Sunday night episode themed around the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The eight “performer” inductees are the ones selected by a ballot sent out to the Hall’s voters after the 15 nominees were announced on Feb. 10.

That leaves seven nominees from this year who will have to wait for another crack at getting in: Mariah Carey, Jane’s Addiction, Sade, Sinead O’Connor, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz and the duo Eric B. and Rakim.

One question mark now is how Cher will react to her induction. Just last December, in an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” she said, “You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars … I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.” At that point, though, she had never received so much as a nomination, so the odds favor her changing her tune on that vow, now that she got voted in her first time actually appearing on the ballot.

Five out of the eight voted in this year were first-time nominees: Osbourne, Cher, Frampton, Foreigner and Kool & the Gang.

A Tribe Called Quest got in on the hip-hop collective’s third time on the ballot (and their third year in a row being nominated). Blige and Matthews both got in on their second try (she was previously up for it in 2021; DMB had a prior nod in 2020).

Frampton, for his part, beyond the merits of having had one of the biggest albums of all time, may be a sentimental favorite this year, due to his being in the acknowledged twilight of his musical career. He has been out on a farewell tour off and on since 2019, following his diagnosis with the debilitating disease inclusion body myositis in 2015. The rocker just wrapped up the last round of dates he had scheduled, although he has not said there won’t be more.

Osbourne becomes a second-time inductee this year; his group Black Sabbath was voted in all the way back in 2006. Sometimes there is contention over whether singers who are already in the Hall of Fame, as group members, really need to be pushed to the front of the line as solo artists, too, ahead of other contenders. In any case, voters decided that Osbourne’s post-Sabbath career established him as one of rock’s major icons, even apart from his initial round of influence and success as a frontman.

De Passe is getting her flowers for a career that included a long stint as one of the major players at Motown, developing the Jackson 5 into superstars and signing the Commodores, among other triumphs, before becoming a film and TV executive. She was profiled by Variety about her long and wide-ranging career in 2022.

Motown is also being celebrated with the induction of Whitfield, a songwriter and producer whose astonishing catalog of hits in the ’60s and ’70s included “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Just My Imagination,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” “War,” “Ball of Confusion,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “(I Know) I’m Losing You,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” “I Can’t Get Next to You” and “Car Wash.” He died in 2008.

Coming on under the “musical influences” umbrella, Alexis Korner may be the name among this year’s inductees that is least known to contemporary music fans. He was a major player in the British blues scene of the 1960s and became a popular broadcaster as well; he died in 1984 at age 55. With John Mayall also being selected by the committee for the same honor, it’s an unexpected banner year for British blues-rockers.
