Sensational Artist Line Up Announced for 2023 Great British R&B Festival in Colne

Organisers of the 2023 Great British R&B Festival, Colne Town Council in partnership with Colne Blues Society, have announced a star-studded line-up for this year's event showcasing the very best of blues music and the genres talented future stars.

The festival will feature over 30 artists across two stages including the Pendle Hippodrome and a brand new stage for 2023, The Exchange Project Stage.

Headlining the 2023 festival will be award-winning, genre-defying, singer-songwriter Elles Bailey; one of the hottest contemporary blues guitarists and considered by many to be amongst the best in the world, Aynsley Lister; and soul, blues and rock legends Xander and The Peace Pirates, whose pervasive blend of inspired songwriting and memorable performances has seen them enrapture audiences from around the world.

Visitors to this year's event will also get to see the likes of acoustic blues artist of the year Dom Martin, multi UK-blues awards nominated singer-songwriter Alice Armstrong, 2022 emerging artist of the year Emma Wilson, and three time young artist of the year Connor Selby, plus many more.

Colne Blues Society, who are programming the festival in 2023 and 2024, have also showcased quality local talent in their exciting line up, including The Hiding Magpies, J-Bear and The Giants, The Imperials and more!

Once again, this year's festival is being sponsored by main sponsors Barnfield Construction Ltd, with the North West based contractors, developers and investors proud sponsors of the highly successful event in 2022, which saw over 30,000 people visit Colne over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Returning this year from 25 th -27 th August, full festival tickets are priced at just £100, working out at just £3 per band over the weekend, while individual day tickets are also available, alongside camping tickets.

Alongside the two main venues, Colne Blues Society will also be programming the Official Fringe Festival which will see blues and rock acts from all over the UK performing across 12 Official Fringe venues, which are free to attend.

Nathan Cutler, Colne Town Council's Events Officer, said: "We are absolutely delighted with the full line-up which has been produced by Colne Blues Society for the 2023 Great British R&B Festival, and we can't wait for August already!

"The line-up features a fantastic range of blues talent including the very best artists in blues music right now, and we will be proud to see them performing here in Colne."

Simon Shackleton, Festival Coordinator at Colne Blues Society, added: "When we were chosen as Artistic Director for the 2023 and 2024 Great British R&B Festival, we were keen to develop an exciting festival programme packed with some of the most influential and up-and-coming blues acts in the UK blues scene, and we are thrilled to say we have achieved that.

"It's an honour to be given the opportunity to take over the creative direction of the festival in its entirety, which holds a special place in the heart of every Colne Blues Society member, and which we know is the premier event in Colne's calendar. Silky vocal runs that make you melt like chocolate, delicious drinks, excellent vibes, and your favourite crew to share it all with – RnB festivals are where all the best memories are made. And as winter creeps up, we need something to shed a bit of sunshine on our lives. We need to get some amazing RnB festivals booked in for 2023.

But since there are dozens and dozens of festivals popping up everywhere, it can be tricky to narrow it down to the best. So we put together this list of the best UK festivals where you can enjoy the smooth, soulful tones of your favourite RnB artists. Check them out below.

Parklife When: Saturday 10th – Sunday 11th June 2023 Where: Heaton Park, Manchester, Northern England 2022 lineup: Joy Crookes, Arlo Parks, Raye, Gabriels, Mahalia, Children of Zeus, Megan Thee Stallion, Lewis Capaldi, Tyler, the Creator, and many more

While you might know Parklife as a hip hop and electronic music festival, this killer fest has all sorts of sounds on its lineup. Last year saw some silky smooth RnB acts such as Joy Crookes and Raye on its stages. The lineups are always impressive, packing in some of the biggest names from various genres, and it's a fantastic choice for those who don’t fancy camping and enjoy a wide spectrum of music .

Strawberries & Creem When: 2023 dates TBA Where: Childerley Orchard, Cambridge, South England 2022 lineup: Tems, Ella Mai, Mabel, Children of Zeus, Pip Millett, The Compozers, Bellah, Tamera, Lil Wayne/Ludacris, Wilkinson, Sub Focus, and many more

Strawberries & Creem always has a fair few RnB artists that sound like the sonic equivalent of caramel on its lineups. It’s one of those UK festivals where there are positive vibes all around, and everyone just wants to have a good time listening to some of the best artists on the scene. Lineups feature RnB, hip hop, electronic, afrobeats, dancehall, grime, and more. Keep an eye out for the 2023 lineup, as it's sure to be fire.

Another multi-genre bonanza, We Out Here has all sorts of genres on its lineup. One of the best UK festivals for discovering the hottest new artists, you’ll find everything here, including jazz, RnB, electronic, dance, indie, and even a splash of metal. But there are also some bigger names on the 2022 lineup you might recognise, such as Mr Scruff and Luke Una. A super wholesome vibe, there's a lake to swim in, a forest dance area, independent cinema and record fairs, responsibly sourced food and independent brews to enjoy.

Titan Festival When: August 2023 Where: Copthall Playing Fields, North West London, England 2022 lineup: Shontelle, Lloyd, Bobby V, Jon B, J. Holiday, T Pain, Fatman Scoop, Lumidee, DJ Scottie B, and many more

Titan is definitely one of the best day festivals for RnB fans. 2022’s lineup was overflowing with RnB stars but also featured splashes of hip hop, afrobeat, pop, amapiano, electronic genres, and reggae. They even had a bit of calypso in there too! More than just tunes, this celebration of global music and culture has funfair rides and games for when your feet need a break from all the dancing. Certain to go just as hard this year as it did in 2022, Titan is one of the biggest and best RnB festivals in the UK.

Love Supreme Jazz Festival When: Friday 30th June – Sunday 2nd July 2023 Where: Glynde Place, East Sussex, South England 2022 lineup: Eryka Badu, TLC, Lianne La Havas, Tom Misch, Gregory Porter, Sister Sledge, Ezra Collective, The Brand New Heavies, Samm Henshaw, and many more

If you like the look of last year's lineup, know that early bird tickets for this festival will be available soon, so keep an eye out! As the name suggests, this fest showcases plenty of world-class jazz acts. But that’s not all. You can find funk, soul, blues, hip hop, and, most importantly, RnB on its lineups, too. Fusing the ethos of European jazz fests like Montreux with the UK festival culture, Love Supreme is a unique and showcases some of the smoothest, most delicious genres.

Wireless When: Friday 7th – Sunday 9th July 2023 Where: Finsbury Park, London, South England 2022 lineup: SZA, Ari Lennox, Doja Cat, Giveon, Jhené Aiko, Kali Uchis, Little Simz, Mahalia, Summer Walker, Ayra Starr, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Snoh Aalegra, Omah Lay, Miraa May, Lucky Daye, Berwyn, and many more

Wireless has a reputation as one of the biggest UK festivals that focuses primarily on hip hop. But, as you can see from last years lineup, there’s plenty of RnB to enjoy there too. So if you love both hip hop and RnB, you’re in for a huge treat at Wireless. Known for crowds that sing every word and sunny weather, Wireless is a cracking festival if you want to sing at the top of your lungs without worrying about being drenched in rain. Although, with British weather you never really know… Fingers crossed!

Cloud X When: 2023 dates TBA Where: London, South England 2022 lineup: BIIG PIIG, Spinall, Sam Wise, Santino Le Saint, Sasha Keable, FelixThe1st, NAYANA IZ, Scuti, JoJo

In 2022, this “good vibes only” festival went down in Greenwich’s Studio 338 and saw RnB, soul, hip hop, and alternative sounds take over for the day. Cloud X is a record label that was founded by LGBT+ and POC with the aim to give a platform to exceptional artists a platform regardless of genre and allow them to develop their sound. Due to its nature, you won’t find a festival like this.

When it comes to music, 2022 went out with a bang, especially after years of uncertainty in the music industry amid the COVID pandemic. Beyonce’s “Renaissance” World Tour

In October 2022, Queen Bee discreetly teased that she would be going on tour in 2023. According to Vulture , the "Cuff It" singer revealed the news at the Wearable Art Gala, when a "UNIQUE experience" to see the star perform her newest songs from the "Renaissance" album was auctioned off. ates and locations for the tour have yet to be revealed, but fans anticipate an announcement sometime in February 2023.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour

For Swifties, the announcement of a new Taylor Swift tour this fall was beyond exciting, but a glitch in Ticketmaster's system (caused by unprecedented demand for tickets, among other reasons) led to many fans losing out on the chance to see Swift perform in person. Though some controversy has surrounded the Eras Tour, it nonetheless is highly anticipated by fans lucky enough to have snagged tickets. The tour features guest performances from artists like Paramore, HAIM, and Phoebe Bridgers , and will span across the US (international dates TBA) from Mar. 17 to Aug. 9.

Lizzo’s "Special" 2our

To highlight her latest album, "Special," Lizzo launched her 2our tour back in the fall of 2022, but extended the dates to the spring of 2023. The 2023 tour starts Feb. 17 in Norway and includes stops in Denmark, Germany, Italy, and England (to name a few) before reaching the US. The singer's North American segment of the tour begins in Knoxville, TN, on Apr. 21 and ends on June 2 in Palm Desert, CA.

SZA’s “SOS” Tour

The release of SZA's "SOS" album was a gradual one, but upon its Dec. 9 release, the album received widespread acclaim. Showcasing songs like "Good Days," "I Hate U," and "Kill Bill," the tour will run from Feb. 21 to May 21 and is set to feature R&B singer Omar Apollo as a guest performer.

Paramore’s In North America Tour

Paramore is kicking off 2023 with a bang, and embarking on their In North America Tour on Feb. 6 in Nashville, TN. The tour comes after the band's five-year hiatus and ahead of their newest album, "This is Why," set to release on Feb. 10. On returning to the road as a group, lead singer Hayley Williams told Billboard , "We're lucky that we've never relied on being a specific type of success, whether that be chart success or radio success. Because at the end of the day, there's a connection and a relationship with the people that have grown up supporting and loving the band with us. So we trust that."

Ed Sheeran’s Mathematics Tour

Running from May to September, Ed Sheeran will be on tour across North America in 2023. Guest performers include Khalid and Russ, Dylan, and Rosa Linn.

P!nk’s Summer Carnival 2023 Tour

R&B legend Billy Ocean announces greatest hits UK tour - and more tickets on sale

There’s a host of artists coming to the north west over the next year, including Turin Brakes, Shakka, Shed Seven and Squeeze

As the clocks go forward this weekend, the change in season brings with it a return to festivals and plenty of concerts on the horizon.

There are tickets available for Neighbourhood Weekender 2022, upcoming gigs by Britpop band Shed Seven and R&B/Soul artist Shakka, as well as newly-announced 2023 tours by British singing legend Billy Ocean and four-piece Turin Brakes.

Neighbourhood Weekender - Victoria Park, Warrington

May 28 and 29, 2022

Manic Street Preachers, Razorlight, James Bay, Red Rum Club, Scouting For Girls, The Academic, GAYLE and more have recently been confirmed to appear at Neighbourhood Weekender this summer.

They join headliners Courteeners, Kasabian and Blossoms at Victoria Park in Warrington on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29, 2022.

Billy Ocean - Bridgewater Hall, Manchester

April 21, 2023

Billy Ocean has spent more of his life on stage than anywhere else.

Next year, Billy returns to his natural environment with a string of headline shows throughout the UK, with a set hand-packed with greatest hits and crowd favourites.

Billy Ocean is Britain's biggest black recording star, with worldwide record sales of over thirty million and six top ten singles on both sides of the Atlantic.

Turin Brakes - Manchester Cathedral

March 4, 2023

2022 sees Turin Brakes release their ninth studio album - Wide-Eyed Nowhere.

The four-piece will play a handful of festivals over the summer, followed by an extensive UK concert tour starting in September.

The band said: “There's always something magical between band and audience at our live shows and we can't wait to get out and see everyone again... we've really missed it!”

Shakka - Gorilla, Manchester

March 29, 2022

Since bursting onto the scene in 2011, Shakka has gone on to feature on Wretch 32's single, Blackout, which charted at #6 in the UK singles chart in 2013, and release an EP entitled Tribe in 2013.

As well as this, he’s performed at Glastonbury and toured the world with the legendary production duo Basement Jaxx.

His newest album, Road Trip To Venus, has received amazing reception from fans and the industry.

Shed Seven have achieved great success since they burst onto the scene in 1994.

Scrolling and listening to music every day to put into our blog and playlists is not an easy task. But when we stumble across enough new names in a particular genre, our fingers are itching to label them as emerging so they can hopefully appear on your radar too.

After our Best R&B Albums of 2022 piece, we've got something new for you. For this article, we compiled a list of some of our favorite r&b artists that we think will blow up soon. We've had the pleasure of following their careers since they were relatively unknown, and watching their careers blossom has been an absolute blessing. Ready to find your new 2023 r&b obsessions on our list?

The British r&b singer came onto our radar when we heard her voice aligning with Stormzy 's for the BBC Music live performance of " Firebabe ". The soulful voice of Debbie floats like a feather over the jazzy arrangement of the songs she writes. And although she has been singing from a young age, she didn't really dive into music until later when "Is This Real Love?" came to life in her bedroom. She caught all the right ears with it and now Debbie is signed to the 0207 Def Jam label, has co-written tracks for Stormzy's new record, and continues to amaze us with the soul she puts into her music.

Elle Eliades

Elle's smoky voice is made to be played on repeat. The Melbourne native is relatable and the raw emotion in her tracks won her a spot on BBC Radio 1. You can familiarize yourself with her her silky vocals and dive into tunes such as "More to Love" and "Everything". Watch out, Eliades is coming with an EP this year, and judging from her recent output it's bound to be a magical experience.

Where to start? " More to Love "

Floyd Fuji has quite a fascinating creative process. As he explains: “My approach to making music is always making a band in my head with me as the frontman on guitar,” Floyd Fuji explains. “And, mixing up the band members from song to song. For example, "What would it sound like if Pharrell was on drums, Flea was on bass, and Bjork was on synths?” You can see for yourself how diverse his influences are, but Floyd is definitely one of the r&b names that make an impression. Especially after his last EP SUNSPOTS .

The L.A.-based singer has already shared a studio with names such as Babyface and Anderson .Paak , but the magnetism of his soulful tunes makes him one to watch. In our catch-up, he confirmed he's cooking up his next project, which will be filled with stories that will be told on a tour with his band.

Where to start? " INSIDE "

Akemi's voice is seductive as her 90's vibe cements her as one of the most exciting r&b artists from the UK. She showed off her gifts for the fall back EP with Moby. Fox fuses afrobeat and r&b pretty successfully into her records with the single "I Want It" as the prime example. With the confidence and innovation Fox is putting into her work, she was under the spotlight for BBC Introducing with a background of firing up the stage for Children of Zeus back in 2021.

Where to start? " Onto Something "

The electronic touch in SYNGA's soulful music elevates her as one of the most interesting r&b artists. Coming from the Netherlands she made quite an impression with her debut EP Resonate , out via our friends at Vokall Records, as the jams "Fire", "Moving Slowly" and "Gold" found their rightful place in the Dutch New Music Friday Spotify playlist. 2022 was the year she gathered her first million in streams while her debut full-length album is expected to reach us by the end of 2023.

Where to start? " Gold "

Sebastian Mikael

Yes, Sebastian Mikael has already been on Billboard, and we listened to his golden voice in COLORS SHOW last year, right after he dropped his PHLEO EP. He has a rich musical history, but we put him on the list because we think the best is yet to come (preferably in the form of an LP). His embodies the gentleness of a river as there is not a single flaw in its smooth nature. Once upon a long time ago, Sebastian secured a record deal pretty fast, but he felt he was thrown into something he wasn't ready for, so he took his time. A couple of years later, Sebastian is very much secure in his creativity, and the unique tunes he grips us with don't let us doubt it.

Where to start? " Overgold "

Gio Genesis

The touching lyricism and vivid emotion in Gio Genesis' world offers us one hell of a soothing journey. Born in White Plains, NY, Gio outlines his suburban upbringing, painting the colors of his Haitian heritage by rapping, singing, and producing his own music. He does it in a way that makes the distinctive talent he carries stand out even more, and we'll see him once again in action with his upcoming EP which he confirmed is coming up towards the end of this year.

Where to start? " Wasting Away "

SEB is boldly walking on the verge of indie pop and r&b, and his lofi track "seaside_demo" became viral in 2021. The L.A.-based artist writes, produces, performs, and engineers all of his music. SEB stands with his name on Today’s Top Hits, Pop Rising, and Songs of Summer on Spotify, and Apple Music’s Viral Hits.

The sunsets are an important inspiration for him, but in his own words, he says: "You know how when you’re dreaming everything makes sense, but when you wake up you realise everything is upside down and wonky. Think about that, but with your favourite songs, and you’ll probably get something similar to mine."

When it comes to 2023, SEB shared with us, " For the rest of the year I have an upcoming project, and a run of shows in the UK - Road To, Great Escape, and Oberkampf! "

Where to start? " loving u is harder "

The Japanese-British artist takes moody r&b structures, combines them with atmospheric hip hop movements, and creates the "Misoverse" - a place she wishes she was growing up in. She shares her heritage through her music, noting that she had no role models to point her the right way when she was young. And that makes her a vital inspiring new voice in the genre. She has collaborated with Thundercat for her track "Deep Fried" and with 5 songs in total, out via Beatnik Creative, she is on our radar. Now, we can't wait to hear what's next.

Where to start? " 1013 "

Speaking of artists that progressively grow their audience Tia Gordon does not stop for a moment to breathe and is releasing gem after gem, "Sunday" being the last one. Her smoothness and good posture in the music she's creating distinguish her in a way we can see how she reaches SZA numbers one day. She's still in her bedroom though, creating great r&b tunes we can't get enough of.

Where to start? " Gone Away "

Did Paulade blow up the r&b world after one track? Yes, he did. The groovy guitars and bass in "As Days Go By" gripped the attention of an important gatekeeper - the Spotify editorial team. The U.S. artist came surprisingly and with a bang, and we are pretty positive he won't fade in the background soon.

As confirmed by Paulade himself via Instagram, " all I can say is expect new exciting music ".

Where to start? " As Days Go By "

Slowe's introspective lyricism bending beautifully over fuzzy, analog warmth is blissful escapism. She takes inspiration from Tyler the Creator, Tame Impala, Erykah Badu, and many more showing the diverse taste she has. So, it's no wonder her nostalgic songs strike right through the heart with vintage drum lines and sparkling Rhodes making the Welsh artist climb fiercely into our list. Oh, and she recently signed with our dear Tru Thoughts - an absolute dream team.

Where to start? " Superego "

She's that fast-rising star from Nigeria who can walk you into her world with one single note. nezsa, or Vanessa, was part of a church choir growing up, and her family introduced her to her favorite artists today such as Adele, Coldplay, and Rihanna. Music was not her first option, but after meeting more and more artistic people along the way, she decided that was the right path to follow. Her atmospheric vocals are naturally glowing in the darker outlines of her instrumentation. She's different and moody and has been recently selected as the next Africa Rising Artist on Apple Music’s Africa Now Radio. And we think she's not very far from the peak.

Where to start? " Should Have Cared "

Kehina decided to study music production three years ago to translate her visions into reality without being limited. Things started buzzing for the London artist after her EP Wish I Was Here, but she hasn't stopped building her sound since then as she released her last dreamy r&b piece " Would You ". Her alternative sound is suitable for the stage next to people like Frank Ocean, where her anxieties would melt right away.

When it comes to what's next, Kehina shared with us, " I’m working on the next single at the moment and building up works for a second EP coming in the next few months. "

Where to start? " Would You "

SHRETA was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, and her sharp vocals and penmanship got her into the label The Heavy Group with Bazzi, Kiana Lede, and Jay Sean. She's getting into her lane soulfully and smoothly as she aims to be right next to the people she looks up to in 5 years. We have no doubt, especially after hearing her mesmerizing laid-back ways in tracks such as "Go Get Her" featuring Phabo and "did you think of us?" In 2023, SHRETA is going to be releasing singles leading up to a full-length project sometime this year. Exciting!

Where to start? " Cruise "

Being on Tyler, The Creator 's last album CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST has opened some doors for Fana Hues, more specifically to new fans in the search for something different. The warm tones of the L.A. artist's vocals and the romantic feeling of her album flora + fana drew so many listeners in, and eventually "Breakfast" ended up in the COLORS show. The most gorgeous and purest r&b sounds are pumping right into her music, so, yes, she's one to watch.

Where to start? " Icarus "

Destin Conrad

Actually, Destin first blew up on Vine but the COLORWAY EP from 2021 is the one that got him on the emerging plane. The L.A.-based singer's tracks are groovy, versatile, and deep, as he states: “I definitely see color when I’m making songs or listening to other people’s music.” Conrad is a long-time friend of Kehlani , so he's not in bad company and his latest album SATIN solidified him as one of the silkiest new voices of r&b.

Where to start? " It's Yours "

Reuben James

This songwriter and pianist has been next to Stevie Wonder at the Grammy Awards, where the world's attention became locked into his virtuoso jazz and soulful technique. The British artist gave up a scholarship to Trinity College of Music to back Sam Smith on a tour. The singer later sold 30 million albums, so it was the right decision. But Rueben knows how to shine on his own when jazzy textured singles like "My Line" and "So Cool" end up on BBC Introducing and 1, and Jazz FM.

Where to start? " Burn "

Secily is one of those artists who want to control every single aspect of their music. She's Brooklyn-based, and the passion she developed for music has been flowering from a young age. Her presence on TikTok is just one of the things that get the whole industry looking at Secily's direction. Her stunning voice and extraordinary songwriting skills on the other hand put her on the breakout map for 2023, and we can't wait for her new track coming out this month.

Where to start? " Battlefield "

Apart from being an incredible multi-instrumentalist, Ross Carlo has such a refreshing energy as a person! His track "Home" came to us back in 2021 when his groove-based sound was only a drop in the ocean of what is yet to come. Inspired by artists like Donny Hathaway and John Mayer, Ross crafted a deep tone that is here to stay long after the track is over, and he will give us more of his magic this year too. His debut EP is currently in the works.

History of R&B Music

R&B, which stands for Rhythm and Blues and is also referred to as R’n’B, is a form of popular music that emerged among African-American communities in the 1940s. It was made by African Americans and mostly targeted African Americans living in urban areas. For this reason, it was initially called “race music,” which was changed for being offensive.

This genre of music is believed to have derived from blues, jazz, folk, and gospel. It changed a lot over the decades. In the 1950s, it was mostly similar to rock n roll and was commonly categorized as such. It was used to refer to electric blues, soul, and gospel as well.

In the 1970s, R&B moved away from rock and was mostly identified with soul and funk. Starting from the 1980s, it was infused with pop, soul, funk, electronic, and hip-hop, resulting in contemporary R&B. The electric guitar was ditched for instruments such as keyboards, drum machines, and synthesizers, making the music very similar to hip-hop.

After starting her career in the early 2010s, SZA received critical acclaim with her 2017 album, Ctrl, and has co-written and performed songs with the likes of Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar and Doja Cat. Her second album, SOS, reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart.

Alicia Keys has been a staple of the R&B genre since the 90s and has shown no signs of slowing down. Her Keys to the Summer tour marks her eighth time around the United States and Canada. This tour came as a welcome surprise after Keys finished her world tour, Alicia + Keys, in May this year.

Her American tour starts on June 28, 2023, and goes until August 2, 2023. She will be visiting Florida, Brooklyn and New Orleans along the way.
