tomatin distillery tour tickets

Tomatin is more than just another whisky distillery. Since 1897 , our people have worked hard to build the Tomatin community that exists today and lies at the heart of everything we do. We produce quality single malt and blended Scotch whisky in an area of stunning natural beauty which has rich whisky making traditions dating back to the 1500s .

Tomatin Single Malt

Since 1897 there has been a quiet revolution unfolding in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. High up amongst the smooth, rounded peaks of the Monadhliath Mountains there is no room for the rugged and robust. Here patience, a gentle hand and a passion for purity rule the day.

In this idyllic spot the naturally soft water of the Alt-na-Frith burn is introduced to tender Scottish barley. Later, from the tall, slim copper stills of the Tomatin Distillery a mellow, fruity spirit is born. Gentle maturation in the cool, stable environment found high above sea level lets the subtle character of this distinctive Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky emerge. The use of carefully selected casks ensures that the softer characters of the precious spirit are never overpowered.

Cù Bòcan Single Malt

A celebration of the subtleties of smoke and perfectly balanced sweetness, Cù Bòcan is an experimental Highland Single Malt that explores innovative finishes to create whiskies full of intrigue and surprise. Cù Bòcan is made with lightly peated Scottish barley and matured in a variety of interesting casks to unlock its unusual flavours, and has been produced in small batches every winter at Tomatin Distillery since 2005.

Thanks to lightly peated barley, every Cù Bòcan holds a signature wisp of smoke. That’s why each edition is an exploration in the subtleties of smoke, the characters of the casks and the mastery of maturation.

Shirakawa 1958

This incredibly rare and limited release single malt, is believed to be the earliest known single vintage Japanese whisky ever bottled. It will be the only official single malt ever to be released from Shirakawa Distillery. The world’s rarest Japanese whisky ever bottled is distributed worldwide by Tomatin Distillery Co. Ltd.

Stephen Bremner, Managing Director at the Tomatin Distillery Co. Ltd., had become intrigued by parent company Takara Shuzo’s history of malt whisky production in Japan. Very little was known about this aspect of the company’s history but undeterred he kept asking questions and knocking on doors, hopeful that some liquid trace remained somewhere within the company. This led, in 2019, to the discovery of this parcel of Shirakawa Single Malt Japanese Whisky.

In 1897 Tomatin was nothing but an isolated and idyllic setting for a distillery. With the new Highland Railway came opportunities, and so the distillery was born.

Since then, the distillery has been at the heart of the community and the community at the heart of the distillery. Today, the Tomatin Legacy lives on in the form of an exciting and varied range of Highland single malt and blended Scotch whiskies.

Tomatin Distillery Tour by Planet Whiskies

Tomatin Distillery - Warehouses and distillery buildings

Planet Whiskies Tour around Tomatin Single Highland Malt Distillery

The Planet Whiskies team have been to a number of distilleries over the years, but today was the chance to go to a very special distillery. We have mentioned this distillery on Planet Whiskies many times and have published all their recent new whisky releases and world-wide awards they have received.  Today we were going to Tomatin and could not wait to see inside this famous Scottish distillery.

Tomatin Distillery is located only 15 or so miles away from Inverness on the A9 and is right on the whisky border of the Highland and Speyside regions with Tomatin being located in the Highlands.  It is 315 metres about sea level and is one of the highest distilleries in the Scotland. The distillery itself in on the eastern edge of the Monadhliath Mountains and you feel as if you are in a remote part of Scotland when looking towards the hills that surround the distillery.

View around the famous Tomatin Distillery

As the Planet Whiskies team turn off the A9 and head towards the distillery we could feel the excitement building. We passed the large sign saying Tomatin Single Highland Malt and carried along the narrow road, driving passed the many warehouses full to the brim with maturing whisky. We also passed what we guessed were distillery workers' homes and this was later confirmed on our tour of the facilities.

After parking the car we had a stroll around taking photos of the signs that are scattered about the premises and the big buildings. We then headed to the Tomatin whisky shop where the whisky tasting would happen later and we were welcomed by Fiona who has worked at the Tomatin for 8 years.

Watching the Tomatin DVD

After we received the warmest welcome we sat down in front of a large T.V and Fiona put on a DVD all about the distillery and its history. The DVD was extremely interesting and told us about the early history of Tomatin and how it started in the 15th century with Illicit stills. It was not until 1897 that today's distillery was built and it has not changed much over the 117 year history.

After the short video was over Fiona took us out of the whisky shop and tasting area and took us down the road and across to the main building for producing the Tomatin malt whisky brands. It was a lovely April day, but there was a strong wind circling the distillery and a slight chill in the air. But as soon as we all entered the building  the chill was gone and we were greeted by a lovely heat and smell of the barley in the air.

Tomatin Distillery Visitor Tour

As we walked along the insides of the building we all had a general chat about the area of Tomatin and it was then that it was confirmed that the houses that we saw when coming up to the distillery were workers houses. Fiona went on to say Tomatin is a community as well as a distillery and is one of the last distilleries in Scotland to provide housing for their staff and at present there are around 25 families living on the 140 acre estate. We also talked about the weather in Tomatin and over the winter months and how in 2014 it was one of the mildest winters with very little snow compared to usual. Normally the staff can be trapped around the distillery for weeks and this is why it is important for the workers to live and work in the distillery grounds. We also talked about the water supply that is used in Tomatin malts and Fiona told us it is a water source called Alt-na Frith which means "Free Burn".

Half way along the distillery building we stopped and Fiona showed us containers filled with barley and what it changes into at the beginning of the process of making the Tomatin award winning highland malts. She explained the whole process to us in the way Tomatin does the malting, mashing, fermentation and distillation and then took us to see all the different parts of the distillery where these processes were actioned. These areas of the distillery she took us to including mashing room which was an amazing sight, the still house which has 12 stills and one of the warehouse filled with the Tomatin brand maturing away in their barrels.

The tour of the facilities at Tomatin was excellent and you really got a sense of what the distillery is about. As we paced around the building it was very interesting to see how the whisky was made and the machines that are used to do this. When you think about the malt barley that we see at the start of the tour, going through all the processes like the mashing room and vaporising through the stills to produce alcohol before being matured for years and hopefully becoming one of the famous award winning Tomatin malt in the future, you start to realise the amount of time and effect that goes into every single process of whisky making.

Every process is as important as the next one to make sure the malt you process is to the highest quality as only this would be acceptable to use within the Tomatin brand.

Tour Tasting at Tomatin Distillery

The tour was now coming to an end, but we still had the whisky tasting to come and this was one of the highlights of the visit to distillery that all whisky drinkers love - trying out the whiskies. We got back to the shop and headed over to the bar area at the back of the building.

Inside the shop and tasting area at Tomatin

The first malt we receive was the superb Tomatin 12 year old which had been married exclusively in Spanish sherry butts before bottling. The 12 year had a lovely rich taste and produced a long and satisfying finish.

Next on the list was the Tomatin 18 year old and this one was married for a short period in distinctive Spanish Oloroso sherry cask. It also went down extremely well and was packed full of lovely flavours and was smooth to consume. It was one of those malts that you just did not want it to end, but like all good drams they must.

As we walked about the shop again taking more photos and picking up a few more Tomatin malts for later on we discussed more details with Fiona about the other malts on offer like the Legacy and the 30 year old. Finally we spoke about Cu Bocan the only peated malt in the Tomatin range. The core range that the Tomatin distillery produce are one of the finest collections of malts you can find and if you have not tried Tomatin yet you don't know what your missing.

Finally we said all the goodbyes to the staff at Tomatin and made our way out of the distillery gates. We really enjoyed our tour around the distillery and the staff at Tomatin are first class with an excellent knowledge relating to everything you need to know about this Highland whisky brand.

Best Distillery Tours Near Inverness

Last Updated:  February 23, 2024

If you want to visit a whisky distillery near Inverness but are unsure where to go, you must read our Best Distillery Tours Near Inverness Guide. We have done the research and have come up with the optimal strategies, whether you are self-driving, catching public transport, or would like to have someone else organise a whisky tour for you. For the best Inverness distillery tours, read on!

General Distillery Visitor Information

COVID-19 has caused significant changes to many distilleries' operation and tour schedules and nearly all now require advanced bookings, even for tastings. We endeavour to ensure the information on this website is accurate; however, due to the unpredictable nature of COVID outbreaks, information may change at short notice. Please check the distillery's website before you go as (see links in the distillery profiles below).

Even in 'normal' times, we recommend that you book in advance to avoid disappointment or avoid long wait times. The booking links and phone numbers for each distillery are below. While you can sometimes drop in, distilleries are becoming increasingly popular as a tourist destination, and tours often sell out days in advance.

Please check the distillery's website for opening hours and tour times as they change throughout the year. The times listed below were accurate at the time of writing.

Dogs, Children and Inverness Distillery Tours

Dogs are generally not allowed in Distillery restaurants/cafes, visitor centres or in production areas, so don’t plan to bring your dog on a distillery tour. Guide dogs and special assistance dogs are permitted, although they may not be allowed in some production areas, so please check with the distillery before you book a tour.

Each distillery has a different policy on the age or number of children that can be taken on a distillery tour or be present during a tasting; please check the distillery's website or call ahead to confirm whether your child/children can join you. A quick summary for distilleries near Inverness:

  • The Tomatin Distillery do permit children of all ages but on the Legacy Tour only  (other tours/tastings 18+)
  • Glen Ord Distillery and Clynelish / Brora do not permit children under the age of 8 years on tours | Children over 8 years old only. Children over 8 years of age may also go on the Glenmorangie Distillery   Classic Tour.
  • Balblair Distillery do not permit children under the age of 12 years on tours | Children over 12 years old only.
  • Benromach Distillery do not permit children under the age of 18 years on tours | Adults only.

For more information on which distilleries you can take your children to, see our post 50 Distillery Tours In Scotland Your Kids Can Actually Go On .

Accessibility / wheelchair access.

Most distillery tours near Inverness are at least partially wheelchair accessible/suitable for those with mobility impairments. Contact the distillery directly if you have any questions. Also have a look at Euan's Guide - a purpose built website that makes it easier for disabled persons to find great places to go.

  • Glen Ord Distillery  offer an accessible route on distillery tours which can accommodate most types of manual or powered wheelchairs and other mobility aids, with an accessible toilet and accessible parking spaces - see Glen Ord's Euan's Guide profile for more information.
  • The Tomatin Distillery is partially wheelchair accessible, with an accessible toilet and accessible parking spaces - see Tomatin's Euan's Guide profile for more information.
  • Balblair Distillery is partially wheelchair accessible, with an accessible toilet and accessible parking spaces.
  • Clynelish Distillery is wheelchair accessible, with an accessible toilet and accessible parking spaces - see Clynelish's Euan's Guide profile for more information.
  • The Glenmorangie Distillery Visitor Centre and the Benromach Distillery Visitor Centre are wheelchair accessible however the distillery tours are not.

But I Don’t Want To (Or Can’t) Drive!

The following distilleries are accessible by public transport (bus) from Inverness, and the journey is 45 to 60 minutes (each way), other than the newly opened Uile-Bheist Distillery which is right in the heart of Inverness. While the other distilleries are accessible by public transport (Glenmorangie, Balblair, Clynelish / Brora) the time to reach them by public transport is over 2 hours each way.

Uile-Bheist Distillery

The tomatin distillery, benromach distillery.

  • The Dalmore Distillery (not currently open to the public)

Glen Ord Distillery and The Tomatin Distillery are approximately 30 minutes in a car from Inverness so you may also wish to consider a taxi or Uber if a bus is not your preferred mode of transport.

Road Trip! Self-Drive Whisky Tour

Oh, the freedom of the open road! You have your pick of distillery tours near Inverness. These maps are designed to be interactive – click on the square frame icon top right of the map to open it in a new browser (‘view larger map’). Modifying the route is easiest on your computer, not your mobile phone, however, if you’ve only got a mobile device, you can import the destination pins into Google Maps and use the directions features to get the best routes.

For more information on how to use Google MyMaps, more information is available on our Scotland Distillery Map page .

Basing yourself in Inverness also means you are not too far from an abundance of distilleries in Speyside; if you are considering tours in Speyside, see our Guide to the Best Speyside Whisky Distillery Tours.

We’ve chosen the following routes from Inverness as all of the distilleries are usually open most days with regular tours, but please keep in mind it is generally now essential to pre-book your visit times at least a day or two in advance. Even in 'normal times' tours often book out, especially on weekends and during peak holiday times, and you don’t want to drive all that way and miss out. We've included the online booking and phone booking information in each distillery profile below.

There are only so many distillery tours you can do in a day. I recommend you pick your favourite TWO.

You can certainly stop by other distilleries, have a look, take some photos and do a tasting (or grab yourself a bottle to take home) but if you’re trying to do more than two distillery tours, you’re going to be pushing for time. The routes below are around 3 hours of driving excluding all other activities . If you allow two tours, you’re already at 5-6 hours for the day, minimum. Most distilleries run tours between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm (last tour at 4 pm), but this varies depending on the time of year (most close earlier Nov – Mar). Remember to consider this when you’re picking your destinations, and prepare for a long day.

Hot Tip For the Designated Driver: most distilleries will permit you to ‘take away’ your tasting dram.

Many distilleries provide glass bottle miniatures for this purpose and some will provide little plastic containers. Always ask and see if you can do ‘take away’ or ‘take home’ samples. In case they don’t have any suitable ‘take away’ vessels, stop by a pharmacy/chemist shop and see if you can buy a ‘sample’ container. Yes, it’s a urine/specimen sample container! Don’t worry as they’ll be sterile and the screw top lids are perfect for keeping whisky safe because they don’t leak.

Another option is to buy some glass screw top containers before you go - the glass wont react with the alcohol, although, being glass, it is more susceptible to being broken if dropped or knocked.

The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom

One of Amanda's favourite books. Around 1885, Alfred Barnard was secretary of Harper's Weekly Gazette, a journal dedicated to the wine and spirit trade. In order to provide his readers with the history and descriptions of the whisky-making process, Barnard decided to visit all distilleries in Scotland, England and Ireland. Accompanied by friends, he visited and sketched over 150 distilleries, including many of the now 'lost' distilleries of Campbeltown.

Spirit of Place

Spirit of Place by Charles MacLean, with photographs by Lara Platman and Allan Macdonald, is a unique addition to the literature on Scotch whisky, from the world's greatest expert on the subject. The perfect gift for anyone planning a tour of Scotland's distilleries, a souvenir for anyone who has visited them, and simply the perfect companion to a dram at home. Campbeltown is overlooked as a region, but Spirit of Place does feature Springbank as part of the 'West Highlands' distillery profiles.

In 1897 Tomatin was nothing but an isolated and idyllic setting for a distillery. With the new Highland Railway came opportunities, and so the distillery was born. Since then, the distillery has been at the heart of the community and the community at the heart of the distillery. Today, the Tomatin Legacy lives on in the form of an exciting and varied range of Highland single malt Scotch whiskies.

It was a wonderfull tour! Fiona (our tour gide) spoke full of passion over this distillery! We saw every little piece of the distillery and we loved it! Because we needed to drive they gave us samples for later! We enjoyed those samples later on in our hotel!

Thank you so much for your fantastic review, I'm glad you enjoyed your tour with Fiona, hope you enjoyed your whisky back at your hotel.

We took the Legacy tour today - one hour 15mins. Fiona was our guide. She was great. Informative and funny. Highly recommended. Thank you

Thank you Sally for your lovely review , Fiona is a fantastic guide, hope to see you again .

We had an absolutely wonderful time. Fiona couldn’t have been more inviting and informative. She really made our experience. Can’t recommend it enough. Thank you for such a lovely afternoon

Thank you for your kind review, I will pass your kind words on to Fiona, hope to see you again in Tomatin.

What a wonderful tour! Fiona was so welcoming and knowledgeable. She is definitely a credit to Tomatin. I took the one hour tour (there are other more in depth tours). The whole Whisky making process was explained in fascinating detail. One can actually feel the history of this distillery. The location is amazing too. And the smells….. delicious! The icing on the cake was the 3 samples you can take home (or taste on site if you’re not driving). Don’t miss this tour!

I'm glad you enjoyed your experience at Tomatin. I will pass on your kind review to Fiona.

Fiona the guide was amazing, as the whisky :) such a beautiful time spending there, hope to see you again as soon as possible. Thanks for the whisky, Fiona. Greatness from Italy

Excellent Distillery Tour

What a great time we had on this tour. The tour guide was very knowledgable and passionate about the brand and this came through all the way through her tour. It is a great story of survival and family orientated business. Our 9 year old son thoroughly enjoyed it as well and it was more than suitable for him. I also liked the fact that you could get up close to most of the equipment and also drivers got a “takeaway” as they could not sample at the end.

For someone who does not drink much whisky or know much about the business this tour was fascinating and has sparked an interest in the process. Our tour guide Fiona was fantastic as well!

Sadly, the staff were quite rude and not helpful in the slightest. Will not be visiting again. Especially compared to all the other distilleries where we had a wonderful experience (this was the only one that was not great)

I am saddened to read about your experience visiting us at Tomatin - this is certainly not something we would want any of our visitors to feel. I am not too sure of the details of your visit, but we work hard to ensure all of our visitors have a quality experience at all times. If you would like to pass on more feedback as to how we could have improved during your visit (if you can remember from a few months ago), then please e-mail us at [email protected] and we will use your comments to further improve our service and visitor experience. You're welcome back anytime, Slàinte!

The Tomatin Distillery is a welcoming place that hits you with humour the minute you walk out of the carpark and encounter the sign about car park damage from amorous cows in wellies. The tour was informative, ran to predicted time and of course, ended with a wee dram or three. Clean, professional and very tasty. We chose to do the tour at Tomatin based on the TA reviews, but in reality, having done a few, the explanation and the processes are similar everywhere.

A group of 8 of us did an all day tour leaving from St Andrews, up towards Loch Ness and wanted to make sure we did a distillery tour along the way. We chose wisely. Very nice tour and informative tour set in a beautiful countryside setting. Tour guide was very sincere and interesting to listen to. If you have the opportunity and you are nearby make the trip. Two of my most popular souvenirs for good friends bought on our trip, were made here and have been VERY well received.

Found it interesting to hear the process of whisky being made with a knowledgeable tour guide. They gave us two different samples of whisky. Yes, whisky is something you "acquire". Not my thing. On the smaller side of a tasting room for sampling and gift shop. Would not have come here if it wasn't for the tour.
