Eswatini (Swaziland) Safari Tours & Holidays

The Kingdom of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) is a small but fabulous destination for a safari vacation. The country’s protected areas have a lot of variety, especially given the tiny size of the kingdom. This in turn means there is a diversity of wildlife, which is particularly good in the premier parks of Hlane Royal National Park and Mkhaya Game Reserve. Other protected areas encourage getting out and about on foot or bicycle, due to the absence of dangerous animals, to explore the sublime landscapes.

7 Questions About Eswatini Safaris

Alan Murphy

Answered by

Alan murphy.

tours to swaziland

When is the best time to visit Eswatini?

“The dry winter months (May to September) are usually the best time for wildlife viewing on an Eswatini safari holiday. At that time of year there is the increased possibility of spotting some of the smaller critters in the kingdom, which are usually elusive at the best of times. During winter the vegetation dies back, and wildlife tends to be drawn to the remaining water sources. This means that staking out a waterhole can make for very productive viewing. Hlane Royal National Park and Mkhaya Game Reserve have decent wildlife viewing year-round. This is because many of the more popular (and endangered) mammals are kept in large enclosures, making them relatively easy to find. Keep in mind that most parks see an upsurge in visitor numbers during South African and Eswatini holidays.”

Why visit Eswatini? What are the major attractions?

“For some people, not being in South Africa is a major attraction of Eswatini. There is certainly a tension that can be experienced in South Africa (due to crime and the legacy of entrenched racism) that is absent in Eswatini. But the kingdom offers so much more. For a dose of culture, adventure sports and craft shopping head for the Ezulwini Valley, just outside the capital, Mbabane. If white-water rafting is your ticket to adrenaline heaven, shoot for the Great Usutu River in central Eswatini. However, it’s the patchwork quilt of protected areas that really grabs the imagination in this country and makes an Eswatini safari trip well worthwhile. Hlane Royal National Park is arguably the best protected area for wildlife in the kingdom. Apart from buffalo, the Big Five are here, and it’s a beautiful park. And if you’ve extra coin rolling around in your pockets, then Mkhaya Game Reserve is stunning, with your best chance of spotting black rhino in this part of Africa. The other protected areas make for some excellent activities such as walking and cycling (but are less about the Big Five).”

What does an Eswatini safari cost?

“Most Eswatini safaris and tours cover more than just the kingdom, i.e. Eswatini safari trips involve parks in South Africa, such as Kruger and parks in KwaZulu-Natal, and the longer trips go further afield again. Keep in mind that Eswatini is tiny, so it’s easy to ‘pop in and out’ while you explore the wider area. If you go to Mkhaya, which is a private reserve, you will pay more but the quality of the guiding, the animals you will likely see and the fantastic accommodation in gorgeous surrounds make it well worthwhile. If you go on a big, organized tour then the most popular Eswatini safari packages tend to be budget (camping) and mid-range (lodge accommodation) tours. Generally speaking, in Eswatini the prices of camping safaris will be around US$100 per person per day, while the price of a mid-range tour will be upward of US$200 per person a day and will involve staying in comfortable lodge accommodation. An Eswatini tour also travels through a good chunk of South Africa, so your holiday can cover a lot of ground. And if it’s luxury you seek then the sky is the limit! While Eswatini has some accommodation that can be considered top end, South Africa and Kruger National Park, and its surrounding network of private concessions in particular, have world-class luxury safari vacations on offer. So, it all comes down to your taste and the weight of your wallet.”

How is the wildlife viewing in Eswatini?

“The wildlife viewing in Eswatini’s premier parks – Hlane Royal National Park and Mkhaya Game Reserve – is excellent. Together they support all of the Big Five (Hlane lacks buffalo, Mkhaya lions and elephants). Mkhaya boasts the kingdom’s only buffalo, black rhino, sable antelope, eland and tsessebe populations. What makes the wildlife viewing even better is the drive-through enclosures that are used to support populations of some of the more vulnerable species. This is one of southern Africa’s best places to see black rhino. At the popular Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary there are no animals considered dangerous to people, which means activities such as guided walking, horseback riding and mountain biking are allowed. The wildlife you see includes different species of antelope, hippo, wildebeest and warthog. It’s a lot of fun spotting these species under your own steam. Mbuluzi Game Reserve is similar to Mlilwane where seeing animals on foot is the primary way to experience the reserve. Also here are nocturnal creatures such as civet, honey badger and bushpig that make for an exciting night safari.”

How safe is Eswatini for tourists?

“Eswatini is a very safe country to spend time in, and in the parks and reserves it’s very unusual to experience crime targeted at tourists. This can come as a relief after spending time in South Africa, which is well known for its high levels of crime. The only exception to this is the larger urban areas such as Mbabane and Manzini – here the same rules apply as they would in any city. That is, don’t wear or carry flashy expensive items, leave valuables in a hotel safe, don’t walk around at night (catch a taxi instead), and be on a higher level of alert regarding what is going on around you on the streets. In the parks and reserves, wildlife viewing always entails some risk – after all, wild animals are unpredictable. However, if you listen to your guide’s instructions then you’ll almost certainly be fine. Serious incidents are rare, and in Eswatini almost unheard of.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“In Eswatini you can expect all types of accommodation – from camping through to good, solid mid-range lodges at Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary and Hlane Royal National Park, and then upwards to the relative luxury of the rustic, semi-open cottages to be found at Mkhaya Game Reserve, or the luxury tents and lodges in Mbuluzi. This type of top-end experience tends to be excellent value in Eswatini, especially when compared to neighboring countries. For super luxury, with all the facilities and the perks, you’ll need to head for one of the private concessions around Kruger National Park in South Africa. In general, the type of accommodation you end up with is directly linked to how much money you want to spend, and although there are limits to this in Eswatini, the bar is a lot higher in nearby South Africa.”

What can I expect from a safari in Eswatini?

“You can expect to see a lot of wildlife in the premier parks of Hlane Royal National Park and Mkhaya Game Reserve on an Eswatini safari vacation, including the Big Five. In particular, you may well spot rare species such as roan and sable antelope, and Mkhaya is probably the best place in southern Africa to see the highly endangered black rhino. In other protected areas you can enjoy the beautiful African landscapes by getting out on foot, horseback or bicycle. The larger, potentially dangerous animals are absent from places such as Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary or Mbuluzi Game Reserve. Lastly, given the warmth and hospitality of the Swazi people, you can expect a great time connecting with the locals while enjoying the kingdom’s wildlife. If interested you should read up on Eswatini’s history. Its conservation-minded policies are no accident: conservation is something the kingdom had to fight hard for.”

Why Travel to Kingdom of eSwatini ? by Luke Hardiman

The mountainous Kingdom of Eswatini (Swaziland) offers visitors a rich mix of spectacular scenery, authentic cultural encounters, traditional craft markets, and beautiful wildlife parks.

This landlocked country, also called Ngwane, is one of three monarchies in Africa and is the smallest African country in the southern hemisphere. The friendly Swazi people are proud of their traditional lifestyle and indigenous cultures welcoming visitors to experience their heritage and ceremonies.  Eswatini is a relaxing and fascinating tourist destination with a laid-back atmosphere and plenty to see and do.

Hlane Royal National Park – Game Walk in eSwatini's Biggest Reserve

The Hlane Royal National Park is eSwatini's largest game reserve, covering some 30 000 hectares of wilderness in eastern Swaziland.  Hlane is known for its game walks tracking white rhinos and elephants. This beautiful reserve is also home to lions, leopards and cheetahs, as well as giraffe, zebras and some antelopes. Hlane Royal National park is also inhabited by a rich variety of birds.

There are plenty of optional activities available in the nature reserve, including hiking, mountain biking, lion tours, and game drives. On our eSwatini safaris that visit Hlane, we camp in the game reserve, surrounded by unspoiled African bushveld.  We take a game walk with a local ranger in search of rhino, elephant and diverse birdlife on our Hlane Park safaris.

Mlilwane Nature Reserve - Relax in eSwatini's Oldest Game Park

Mlilwane Nature Reserve is eSwatini's oldest and most popular protected area, covering 4 560 hectares of grassland and African wilderness. Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary is a predator-free reserve, which makes it ideal for safe game walks and family safaris. It is ideally situated in the “Valley of Heaven” or Ezulwini Valley, easily accessible from Ezulwini and Malkerns tourism hubs. Visitors have 24-hour access to the Mlilwane Nature Reserve, making it an even more convenient stop over.

Mlilwane is home to zebra, giraffe, various antelope species, crocodile, hippo, and diverse birdlife. You can explore the beautiful scenery and interact with the flora and fauna of the area on foot, getting up close to nature and all its wonders. In addition to the wildlife and scenery Mlilwane Reserve also offers visitors the unique cultural experience of watching traditional Swazi dancers perform.

Optional activities at the tranquil Mlilwane Reserve include hiking, mountain biking and horse riding as well as game viewing drives. On our eSwatini Safaris to Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, we stay in Beehive Huts in the reserve.

Malolotja Nature Reserve - Explore eSwatini's Unspoiled Mountain Wilderness

Traveling through lush fruit farming country in northwestern eSwatini, you reach the secluded Malalotja Nature Reserve famous for its spectacular mountain scenery and rich variety of flora and fauna. Malalotja covers around 18 000 hectares of scenic mountain terrain and is considered the last unspoilt mountain wilderness in eSwatini (Swaziland). The reserve is known for its wide variety of habitats, from grassland to riverine scrub and bushveld to lush forests. In Malalotja you can spend a full day walking through seldom-explored mountains and taking in the stunning views.

The reserve is home to wildlife such as wildebeest, leopard, serval, aardwolf, jackal, zebra and bushpig. Various antelopes also inhabit the park, including reedbuck, blesbok, red hartebeest, and oribi. Malalotja Reserve also boasts frog species endemic to eSwatini, Lesotho and South Africa, as well as abundant birdlife, including some rare bird species. Birds found in the wilderness area include louries, sugarbirds, sunbirds, blue cranes, and swallows, as well as a colony of bald ibis at Malolotja Falls.

Ngwenya Mountain, eSwatini's second-highest mountain at 1829 metres lies within Malalotja Nature Reserve. The reserve also encompasses the deep Nkomati River Valley and the highest waterfall in Swaziland, Malolotja Falls, which plummets 95 metres. On our safaris to Malolotja we stay in log cabins with fantastic panoramic views under starry Swaziland night skies.

Shewula Community-Based Natural Resources Programme (CBNRP) - Volunteer in eSwatini

One of our Swaziland tour choices is a Volunteer Safari that visits Shewula community in the scenic Lubombo conservancy. On this eSwatini Safari, you spend time with the local Swazi women engaged in crafts and perma-culture projects, assisting them and learning how these women support the community. On this meaningful cultural experience in rural eSwatini you gain insight into these friendly people’s culture and traditional lifestyles.

This tour exceeded our expectations. Everything was delightful! Our guide Mr. Simba helped us in three days (6-9 January 2023) to explore the cultural traditions and nature of Swaziland. We were particularly impressed by the rhinos we saw up close in Hlane National Park! We got some great photos and videos. Thank you very much for an interesting trip! Dmitry and Irina.

Escorted and Guided Safaris to the  Kruger National Park

                                      kruger national park overview.

The King of South African game Parks is the Kruger National Park and one of the best game-viewing areas in all of Africa.

The figures speak for themselves: 501 Bird species, 110 reptiles, 51 fish, 31 amphibians, 142 mammal and over 23,100 plant species have been recorded here. The region itself is enormous, extending from the Crocodile river in the South to the Limpopo in the North, from the wooded foothills of the eastern escarpment to the humid plains of the Low veld.

It certainly fulfills most visitors' fantasies of seeing magnificent herds of game roaming across acacia-studded stretches of savannah and, of course, is home to the Big Five.

The park is 120 km wide and over 450 km long, conserving 21,497 sq. km, an area the size of Wales or Israel. Despite its size, it is very well developed, with a good network covering 2600 km of roads and numerous camps, making a Kruger safari relatively hassle free.

travel to swaziland - swaziland guide and itinerary

Sandwiched between South Africa and Mozambique, the Kingdom of Swaziland (now known as Eswatini) is a tiny nation often described as ‘Africa in a nutshell’, a microcosm of the best Africa has to offer. Only after my recent trip did I realize it wasn’t just a marketing slogan.

Despite being the smallest country in Africa, Eswatini really does pack a punch with an impressive range of sights in a tiny area. In just a few days, we had some of the best wildlife experiences of our lives, witnessed colorful and lively cultural dances, and hiked several walking trails.

Plus, there are stunning scenery, adrenaline-pumping activities, affordable yet high-quality accommodation options and some of the most welcoming and proud people in the world. It truly offers the best of Africa in one small but perfectly formed country.

For those planning to travel to Swaziland, here is a complete Swaziland guide with the best things to do, best places to stay and  eat, as well as my five-day itinerary in Swaziland.

five days in swaziland - swaziland itinerary

In April 2018, Swaziland celebrated 50/50: 50th year since independence and King Mswati III’s 50th birthday. During the colourful celebrations, King Mswati III made an historic announcement that the country’s name would change to ‘The Kingdom of Eswatini’. Eswatini, meaning “place of the Swati people”, was actually the pre-colonial name of the Kingdom in Swazi language.

Most former colonies in Africa changed their names immediately on gaining Independence: The Gold Coast became Ghana, Basutoland became Lesotho and Nyasaland became Malawi. Although the Kingdom only made this change in 2018, 50 years after its independence, it is no less important, and marks a significant moment in the country’s history.

During our visit in June 2018, we still saw and heard the name ‘Swaziland’ everywhere. It will take time for the changes to be implemented, but I’m sure the world will get used to Eswatini’s new name very soon.

swaziland itinerary - five days in swaziland

Located in southern Africa, Swaziland (Eswatini) is completely landlocked by South Africa to the west and Mozambique to the east. It’s the smallest country in Africa, in fact in the whole of the Southern Hemisphere. At an area of 17,204 square km (6,642 square miles), it is slightly smaller than the state of Massachusetts.

Many travelers make a flying visit to Swaziland on their way to Kruger National Park, but it’s well worth lingering at least five days or a week. You can easily combine a trip to South Africa with Swaziland, like what we did. We spent 16 days in total, driving from Johannesburg to Swaziland and then continuing south into Kwazulu-Natal and onto Lesotho, then back to Johannesburg.

how to travel swaziland - swaziland itinerary - five days in swaziland

Traveling to Swaziland is surprisingly easy: unlike many other African countries, Swaziland allows citizens of most countries (US, Canada, Australia, Singapore, China and EU nations) to enter visa-free for up to 30 days. Check their visa policy here.

There are flights into Eswatini from Johannesburg and Durban in South Africa and Maputo, Mozambique. The only international airport of Swaziland is the new King Mswati III International Airport in Manzini. Return flights from Johannesburg to Manzini is around US$350 per person.

Check for Flights to Swaziland

The most popular way to travel into Swaziland from South Africa is overland via border crossings. Depending on season, the border crossings from South Africa to Swaziland can be crowded. The Ngwenya/Oshoek Border Post is the most popular border post — we used this crossing and were lucky enough to find it rather empty. The border crossing took only around 15 minutes in total. Other border posts, such as the one near Amsterdam and Jeppes Reef are a good alternative and easily reachable with normal sedans.

For those without your own car, the Eswatini-based bus company SiyeSwatini TransMagnific provides transport to and from Swaziland daily. Stops include the Johannesburg airport, Nelspruit and Kruger International Airport on the weekends. The TransMagnific mini-buses are more comfortable than the public transport, but you must book at least a day prior to travel.

The South African Baz Bus is an independent line hop-on-and-off targetting backpackers, also makes regular stops via South Africa to various hostels and hotels in Eswatini.

how to travel swaziland - swaziland guide itinerary - five days in swaziland

We chose to travel Swaziland (Eswatini), South Africa and Lesotho in June, mainly for the mild winter climate and better wildlife opportunities.

June to September is the winter dry season in southern Africa. During this period, there is less vegetation and animals are more concentrated around rivers and waterholes, making it easier to spot them. There are also fewer mosquitos.

However, it can get cold in the evenings at the higher-lying areas. That means you’ll need to bring a winter/down jacket for game drives at sunrise and sunset. Temperatures in the lowlands range from 12 to 25 degrees Celsius, and in the mountains from 3 to 10 degrees Celsius.

We mostly wore t-shirt and shorts or cargo pants during the day, plus a light jacket at night. The only time we wore our thick winter jacket was on the evening game drives, when the wind was lashing at us on the open safari jeeps.

traveling to swaziland - swaziland guide itinerary

The best way to travel around Swaziland (Eswatini) is by car rental. We booked our rental car online from  Discover Car Hire . For the entire two-week trip in South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho, it only cost us just US$250 including a toddler car seat and all the permits we had to pay to drive the car across borders.

Driving in Swaziland (Eswatini) is relatively easy and straightforward. The roads are good, though certain stretches may have lots of potholes. Because the country is small, you don’t have to drive far to see most sights — the longest drive we did in Swaziland without stopping was only two hours.

Check for Car Rentals here!

travel to swaziland - swaziland guide and itinerary

If you’re not renting a car, the most common mode of transport is minibuses called Kombis. In Swaziland, these vans are often driven by very young men, and most have assistants who estimate and collect fares, ask your destination, and make change. Fares typically range from R5 for short trips of around 5 minutes to R30 for longer trips.

Be prepared for crowded seats, loud radios, and sometimes reckless driving. The larger Sprinter vans are a safer and faster choice if available.

Travel to Swaziland: Our 5-Day Itinerary

As mentioned, Swaziland (Eswatini) is small enough to visit in just a few days. We spent five days in Swaziland and it was sufficient to explore almost the whole of northern and central Swaziland. We did miss some sights like the Sibebe Rock, Mbabane the administrative capital city of Swaziland, Malolotja Nature Reserve and Mkhaya Game Reserve (where kids under 8 are not allowed). I recommend spending at least one week in Swaziland to see it at a more comfortable pace.

We chose the Oshoek/Ngwenya Border as we were driving in from Grenoble, South Africa. It’s the most popular border post, but we were surprised to find it quite empty. It took us 15 minutes to cross the border. Remember to have your permit to drive in Swaziland (which can be obtained from car rental company) and your child’s birth certificate (if you’re traveling with a kid).

From there, it was just a 5-minute drive to our first stop, Ngwenya Glass . The factory has an interesting workshop where you can actually see how workers create beautiful African animal figures from recycled glass. The area also has a nice cafe with a kids’ playground and several other craft and art shops.

Then a 10-minute drive will get you to Malolotja Nature Reserve , a true wilderness area with over 200km of hiking trails, 280 species of birds and several antelope species. There’s also an exciting canopy tour that will bring you on a zipline through the forest. Sadly, we arrived too late to visit this area, but I’ve heard it’s definitely worth visiting.

We stayed at the rustic Hawane Resort, which has traditional Swazi beehive chalets and thatch-roofed rondavels with ethnic African interiors. The whole lodge is framed by the Malolotja peaks, and the location is excellent for those who want to explore the Malolotja Reserve. Our family suite was huge and spacious, with a double bed and two singles perfect for kids. We did find a few insects in our room, but that’s common in the African countryside. The food at the lodge restaurant was excellent and it gave us a chance to try local Swazi dishes. Read Tripadvisor reviews.

The next morning, we drove to the Ezulwini Valley, the historical and royal heart of Swaziland. It was just a 30-minute drive. For most of Swazi history, this area has been home to the royal family. Lobamba is the main town of the valley and it’s where you’ll find all the museums, government buildings and craft markets.

We first headed to the National Museum , with interesting displays of Swazi traditional costumes, and detailed information on their history. It also has a traditional beehive village and cattle enclosure. Across the road from it is the memorial park to King Sobhuza II , the most revered of Swazi kings (and he was the one who fought for independence). Besides paintings and statues of the king, the museum here has a collection of his fancy cars as well.

Next we headed to the Mantenga Nature Reserve and Swazi Cultural Village, just a 10-minute drive away. This is the best place in Swaziland to learn about local culture, see their traditional wear, and visit traditional beehive huts where the Swazis used to live in. The guided tour wasn’t great, but we absolutely enjoyed the traditional Sibhaca dance performance (everyday at 11.15pm and 3.15pm). We watched it along with 70 high school students and the atmosphere was raving!

After lunch in Lobamba, we drove to Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary , possibly the most family-friendly reserve we visited on our entire trip (South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho). This was Swaziland’s first protected area, created by conservationist Ted Reilly on his family farm in the 1950s. The reserve is now an outdoor lover’s paradise, with lots of activities to do including cycling and horseriding safari. It’s a small reserve without big game, so young kids can wander free and self game drives are allowed. We were pleasantly surprised to find impalas and warthogs right outside our cottage and sniffing around the activity centre.

That evening, we did a sunset game drive to the Execution Rock, high up on the peaks where we wouldn’t have been able to access with our own vehicle. We got to do a short hike up to the highest point with Kaleya — sunset from there was just spectacular. It truly marked a meaningful end to our jam-packed day.

The rest camp at Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary has four different types of accommodations: comfortable huts, beehive villages, Shonalanga family cottage and Lontweni self-catering rondavels. They are all ensuite and located close to the shop, activity centre and restaurant area. We stayed at the Lontweni rondavel that had a fully-equipped kitchen, outdoor braai area and stunning view of the grass plains beneath. The outdoor deck was beautiful and we wished we had time to enjoy it more. Dinner at the Hippo Haunt restaurant was fantastic as we met other families and Kaleya had a good time meeting new friends. Book your stay here!

After a lazy morning at Mlilwane, we packed up and left for the Malkerns Valley, just 20 minutes away by car. The Malandela Complex is home to House on Fire , a cultural site and performance space that hosts the famous Bushfire Music Festival . It’s a hot place for cool locals and is filled with mosaic artwork and eclectic sculptures. Kaleya really enjoyed the quirky flair of this place.

Further down the road is a collection of art and craft shops, gallery, and cafe. Swazi Candles in particular is well worth a visit — you can see how the creative candles (in every African animal shape) are made. We also spent a bit too much time at the African craft market, which sells a variety of wooden masks, sculptures and souvenirs. Prices here are much better than in South Africa.

In the afternoon, we drove to Hlane Royal National Park in eastern Swaziland, just a 1.5-hour drive away. Hlane (translates to ‘wilderness’) is Swaziland’s largest protected area, and is home to all of the Big Five except the African buffalo. Once inside the park, you can explore most of it on 2WD except for the lion section. That was what we did — we did a self game drive and chanced upon giraffes, waterbucks, impalas, zebras and even tortoises.

travel to swaziland - swaziland guide itinerary - lion at hlane national park

Hlane has two camps and both are great. We stayed at Ndlovu Camp , located right next to the main gate, with self-catering rondavels and cottages as well as a shop and restaurant. There’s no electricity in the cottages here, but they’re surprisingly comfortable and well-designed. Our enormous cottage has four rooms and fits up to eight people. Our favorite area was the big fenced up waterhole in front of the restaurant — we saw hippos there when we were having dinner and then a huge group of rhinos next morning! Read the Tripadvisor reviews here.

Bhubesi Camp is about 10km away, overlooking a river. The stone cottages here are fancier and have electricity. If you’re booked into Bhubesi Camp, make sure to enter through the main gates and check in at Ndlovu Camp before driving there. We made the mistake of driving straight to Bhubesi and had to go to Ndlovu after, so we switched and stayed at Ndlovu instead.

The next morning, we rose early for a game drive. Hlane doesn’t allow kids under 6 on their guided game drives (as jeeps are opened), so I went on it while Alberto and Kaleya stayed back to watch the rhinos from the waterhole.

My game drive at Hlane was definitely the best drive I had on this trip. We spotted a whole family of lions snoozing away, more white rhinos hanging around, a pair of elephants, wildebeests, impalas, waterbucks, kudu, baboons, jackals and crocodiles. Our guide was excellent and gave us lots of information about wildlife.

After checking out, we drove to the new Swaziland Sugarcane Museum in Tabankulu just 10 minutes away. The region is actually home to vast sugar estates that dominate the lowveld. There are endless   rows of sugarcane plantations right outside Hlane. The museum shows how Swazi sugarcane is milled and sold. They have blended wall panels touch screen computers and vintage machinery on display, as well as information on the history of the sugar industry in Swaziland and how the business is transforming and uplifting rural farmers.

From there, it was another short drive to the nearby Mbuluzi Game Reserve , a small and privately owned reserve located in the fringes of Hlane. It’s bound by the beautiful Mbuluzi River and the Lubombo mountain range in the east and boasts a remarkable diversity of habitat. There are no predators here, so self game drives and hiking are allowed. That evening, we drove up to a lookout point in the northern section of the reserve, for a spectacular panorama of the river valley beneath us.

We absolutely adored this stunning bush retreat — it’s the kind of home I’ve always dreamt of owning one day: a designer home completely surrounded by nature. Imfihlo means “Secret” in siSwati, and it’s truly a hidden retreat. Utilising “green” design principles, the lodge blends into the landscape with its earth colors and features. The house has an open concept, with a huge outdoor deck, bonfire area, and a swimming pool. We had the 3-bedroom house to ourselves, where we cooked, swam, relaxed and went on self game drives.

travel to swaziland - swaziland guide - imfihlo lodge

We spent a lazy morning cooking breakfast, reading on our deck, and listening to the sound of the Mbuluzi River flowing beneath us. On our way out of the reserve, we took a self game drive and spotted a giraffe and several waterbucks. There isn’t a lot of wildlife to see in the reserve, but it’s a nice stopover spot for those continuing on to Mozambique or South Africa.

From here, it was a two-hour drive all the way down south to Golela/Lavumisa border post. We would then continue exploring the Kwazulu-Natal province of South Africa.

Two things that I always enjoy about your blog/site: 1) You don’t always go to the touristy sites that everyone else goes to, such as the Faroe Islands, Lebanon, Oman, and now Swaziland, which is now definitely on my radar as a place to go.

2) You do really good, detailed, and realistic itineraries that save me a LOT of time from researching a place.

Keep up the good work!

Hi I’m a resident of KZN and have wondered about visiting both eSwatini and Lesotho and have often wondered if it’d be worth it….and now I think I will. It looks really chilled and my wife would love this as I far prefer the 4×4 side of the journey….but my wife DOES NOT enjoy camping. I will be entering from the bottom (Durban) and my plan is to do a loop….probably leaving from the same relaxing spot u spent your last night back to Durban. I’m happy with about a week holiday and reckon it’ll be affordable. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks for your time and a inspiring article. Andrew.

hi Andrew, thanks for dropping by! We did exactly just that, driving into eSwatini and Lesotho from Durban. We spent 2 weeks in total, with half the time in Welgevonden, Durban and the Drakensburg in South Africa, and the other in eSwatini and Lesotho. An epic road trip that I highly recommend! We didn’t drive the famous Sani Pass as renting a 4X4 was way more expensive than renting a normal sedan. By the way, I also wrote a Lesotho guide in you’re interested in reading. Lesotho blew my mind with its mountainous landscapes and I absolutely loved it too. We stayed at Maliba Lodge and really enjoyed ourselves.

' src=

Hi, Could you share some outline of how much these places/activities cost for the trip? Trying to see if it’s feasible. Love your article!

' src=

hi Imogen, thanks for the kind comment! We actually traveled Swaziland with the tourism board, and our trip was hosted by them. That said, most of our activities weren’t overly expensive and the places we stayed at were midrange prices. I would say they’re similar to prices in South Africa. I’m sorry this isn’t very helpful, hopes it gives you a slight idea.

Health & Safety

When visiting Eswaitni, it is wise to be up to date on tetanus, polio and diphtheria (now given as an all-in-one vaccine), and hepatitis A. Proof of vaccination against yellow fever is only needed if you are coming from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission or where yellow fever is endemic. Eswaitni is NOT such a country itself. Immunisation against cholera is no longer required for Eswatini. Anti-Malarial pills are only needed if travelling to the eastern side of the country (the lowveld and Lubombo Mountains), including the reserves of the Lubombo Conservancy. However, Eswatini is also getting close to being malaria free – see here . There is a very high HIV/AIDS infection rate, and therefore all precautions should be taken, though the country is working hard and achieving good success in tackling HIV/AIDS. Gastrointestinal infections can be avoided through regularly washing hands, along with fruits and vegetables.

The Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini is committed to strict public health measures to prevent the importation and exportation of diseases in and out of the country in line with International Health Regulations. All travellers, upon arrival and exiting the points of entry will be subjected to screening for the following:

  • Temperature checks
  • Disease symptoms
  • History of travel and destination
  • Yellow fever Vaccination status for travellers travelling to and from endemic countries
  • Vaccination status of any other health threat of public health concern
  • Health declaration form which can be downloaded from this link

On your day of travel, please print and fill in the health declaration form. Hand over the hard copy to a port health officer for screening upon arrival at the Point of Entry. This will help save waiting time and queuing for screening.

Click here for the full 2023 Health Advisory from the Eswaitni Ministry of Heath, including a map showing medical facilities across the country.

Medical facilities in Eswatini are limited; however minor problems can be checked through private services offered by some hotels. In some serious cases, transfers to South Africa may be needed. It is recommended that all visitors have medical insurance.

Security checks from border forces and the local police aren’t uncommon, especially for tourists. Checks will get finished quicker and without problems provided that tourists are patient during them. With regards to crime, usual precautions should be taken when visiting an unknown place. Try to limit taking valuables out of the accommodation when possible, especially at night.

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

After some periods of restricted travel during the pandemic, as of November 2022, ALL COVID-related restrictions and requirements for entry in to Eswatini have been removed. Eswatini is fully open to all visitors once again.

Click here for the November 2022 notice on Cross-border travel from the Eswatini Acting Prime Minister.

The Eswatini Tourism Authority (ETA) and the Hospitality & Tourism Association of Eswatini (HOTEAS) joined forces to produce Health & Safety Guidelines on COVID-19 in the Tourist Industry in early July 2020 – to allow tourists to visit it as safely as possible. Click here to see & download the document. These were produced based on WHO and UN guidelines and after extensive consultation with the Ministry of Tourism and WHO. The protocols are endorsed by the UN and WHO. Click here for further information.

As a result of these robust guidelines, Eswatini has been awarded the prestigious Safe Travels Stamp by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) . The Safe Travels stamp is the world’s first ever global safety and hygiene stamp for Travel & Tourism, designed specifically to address COVID-19 and similar outbreaks. It confirms that Eswatini is following world-class health and hygiene protocols, and is an important and powerful signal of a consistent global approach that allows for the rebuilding of confidence among travellers so that “Safe travels” can be enjoyed as restrictions are eased.

Within Eswatini, as of 18 July 2022, the Government has de-escalated the COVID-19 response to Adjusted Risk Level 0:

  • The wearing of face masks is no longer mandatory in all settings; however, individuals will be free to wear a face mask based on their assessment of perceived risk of acquiring COVID-19 in any given situation.
  • Hand-washing and sanitisation is encouraged at all times in all public spaces as a good health and hygiene practice.
  • A person exhibiting flu-like symptoms should take the responsibility to wear a face mask or, where possible, refrain from attending public gatherings.
  • Testing for COVID-19 remains available and is encouraged for all persons experiencing flu-like symptoms and if tested positive for the COVID-19, a person should wear face masks at all times if they need to go to public areas

South  Africa

Most international travellers pass through South Africa in order to enter Eswatini. South Africa’s borders were closed at times during the COVID pandemic but have been open since mid-2021.

As from June 2022, South Africa repealed its regulations that had been introduced to control entry into the country because of the pandemic, meaning that travellers can enter South Africa without the need for any COVID test results or vaccinations.

The above is for general guidance. For the latest updates on the regulations and affects of COVID-19 on travel & tourism in South Africa please check the following links:

Dress is generally informal. For safaris, “natural ” colours should be worn in preference to light/bright colours. In the uplands, especially in the winter (April-September), it can be cold in the evening and sweaters may be needed. It can be very cold on morning or night safari drives.

The unit of currency in Eswatini is the Lilangeni – plural Emalangeni (E) – which is fixed to the rand (1 Rand = 1 Lilangeni). South African Rands are accepted everywhere and there’s no need to change them. In fact, some outside tourist areas will only accept the South African notes.

Emalangeni are difficult to exchange for other currencies outside Eswatini, so you should reconvert before you leave. If you are leaving through the airport you could use your last E50 for the compulsory departure tax.

Credit cards such as Visa, Mastercard and American Express are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops but not for the purchase of petrol. Most ATMs in Eswatini accept international cards. If you have a Maestro or Cirrus debit card you can use Standard Bank ATMs to withdraw money.

Standard Bank, First National and Nedbank have branches in all the main centres. Opening hours are generally 8.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday, and until 1pm on Saturdays.

Declaring Goods

It is important to note the rules and regulations with regards to taking goods bought within Eswatini, out of the country. When you buy goods from Eswatini and taking them to another country, tourists will be required to declare goods and are required to buy a form and fill it for the declaration processes (which costs 41.50zar). The allowance for goods out of Eswatini is to the value of 250 ZAR per person.

Eswatini time is GMT+1.

Public Holidays in Eswatini

Electricity

230 volt AC. Sockets take the South African ‘Type M’ plugs (three large round pins), and also the ‘Type N plugs.

Communications

The telephone system is reasonably reliable, though mobiles can often be easier to get through to than landlines. Sim cards for local mobile phone networks are widely available and relatively cheap and easy to use. There are two mobile network providers in Eswatini – MTN has been around for a number of years and Eswatini Mobile is a relative newcomer. Most hotels and offices are readily reached by e-mail and offer wifi to guests, though internet connection can be slow. The postal system tends to be slow. International courier DHL operates in Eswatini.

TV & Radio

There is a national TV station, though its primary output is news. In addition, many city centre hotels receive international satellite channels. There are English language radio broadcasts.

Photography

Any camera equipment is best brought into the country and care should be taken to avoid its exposure to extremes of heat. Most Swazi’s will not mind being photographed but it is common courtesy to ask permission first.

Best 3 Day Eswatini Tour in 2022

Location Mbabane. Blue pin on the map.

Eswatini Tour

The Best 3 Day eSwatini Tour formerly known as Swaziland . The 3 Day eSwatini Tour leaves from Johannesburg to eSwatini . 4 hours drive from Johannesburg . A good weekend away or just a short visit to this beautiful country, landlocked by South Africa and Mozambique.

Eswatini is the last absolute monarch in Africa. Eswatini lies across a fault which runs from the Drakensberg Mountains of Lesotho, north through the Eastern highlands of Zimbabwe, and forms the Great Rift Valley of Kenya.

A small, landlocked kingdom, Eswatini is bordered in the North, West and South by the Republic of South Africa and by Mozambique in the East. The majority of Eswatini’s population is ethnically Swazi, mixed with a small number of Zuly and White South Africans, mostly people of British and Afrikaner descent.

Traditionally Swazis have been Subsistence farmers and herders, but most now mix such activities with work in the growing urban formal economy and in government. Some Swazi work in the mines in South Africa.

Eswatini also received Portuguese settlers and African refugees from Mozambique. Christianity in Eswatini is sometimes mixed with traditional beliefs and practices. Many traditionalists believe that most Swazi ascribe a special spiritual role to the monarch

Swaziland Culture

The principal Swazi social unit is the homestead, a traditional beehive hut thatched with dry grass. In a polygamous homestead, each wife has her own hut and yard surrounded by reed fences. There are three structures for sleeping, cooking, and storage (brewing beer). Larger homesteads also have structures used as bachelors’ quarters and guest accommodation.

Central to the traditional homestead is the cattle byre, a circular area enclosed by large logs, interspersed with branches. The cattle byre has ritual as well as practical significance as a store of wealth and symbol of prestige. It contains sealed grain pits. Facing the cattle byre is the great hut which is occupied by the mother of the headman.

The headman is central to all homestead affairs and he is often polygamous. He leads through example and advises his wives on all social affairs of the home, as well as seeing to the well-being of the family. He also spends time socialising with the young boys, who are often his sons or close relatives, advising them on the expectations of growing up and manhood.

The Sangoma is a traditional diviner chosen by the ancestors of that particular family. The training of the Sangoma is called “kwetfwasa”. At the end of the training, a graduation ceremony takes place where all the local sangoma come together for feasting and dancing.

The diviner is consulted for various purposes, such as determining the cause of sickness or even death. His diagnosis is based on “kubhula”, a process of communication, through trance, with the natural superpowers. The Inyanga (a medical and pharmaceutical specialist in western terms) possesses the bone throwing skill (“kushaya ematsambo”) used to determine the cause of the sickness.

The most important cultural event in Eswatini is the Incwala ceremony. It is held on the fourth day after the full moon nearest the longest day, 21 December. Incwala is often translated in English as “first fruits ceremony”, but the King’s tasting of the new harvest is only one aspect among many in this long pageant. Incwala is best translated as “Kingship Ceremony”: when there is no king, there is no Incwala. It is high treason for any other person to hold an Incwala.

Every Swazi may take part in the public parts of the Incwala. The climax of the event is the fourth day of the Big Incwala. The key figures are the King, Queen Mother, royal wives and children, the royal governors (indunas), the chiefs, the regiments, and the “bemanti” or “water people”.

Eswatini’s most well-known cultural event is the annual Umhlanga Reed dance. In the eight-day ceremony, girls cut reeds and present them to the queen’s mother and then dance. (There is no formal competition.) It is done in late August or early September.

Only childless, unmarried girls can take part. The aims of the ceremony are to preserve girls’ chastity, provide tribute labour for the Queen-mother, and encourage solidarity by working together. The royal family appoints a commoner maiden to be “induna” (captain) of the girls and she announces the dates of the annual ceremony over the radio.

The chosen induna is expected to be an expert dancer and knowledgeable on royal protocol. One of the King’s daughters acts as her counterpart during the ceremony.

The Reed Dance today is not an ancient ceremony but a development of the old “umchwasho “custom. In “umchwasho”, all young girls were placed in a female age-regiment. If any girl became pregnant outside of marriage, her family paid a fine of one cow to the local chief. After a number of years, when the girls had reached a marriageable age, they would perform labour service for the Queen Mother, ending with dancing and feasting.

The country was under the chasity rite of “umchwasho” until 19 August 2005.

Eswatini is also known for its strong presence in the handcrafts industry.

The products are unique and reflect the culture of Eswatini , ranging from housewares to artistic decorations, to complex glass, stone or wood artwork.

Mlilwane Game reserve eSwatini

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary is Eswatini’s (formerly Swaziland) pioneer conservation area, a shining example of what is possible if passion, vision and action fuse.  Once a highly profitable multi-purpose farm, and being labelled an “impossible dream”, Mlilwane was proclaimed in 1961 and is now the kingdom’s most popular eco-destination for locals and internationals alike.

The name ‘ Mlilwane’ (‘Little Fire’ in siSwati) was derived from the numerous fires started by lightning strikes on the Mlilwane Hill but now holds significance as the little fire that ignited the conservation movement in Swaziland .

Traditional Beehive Huts

The Homestead is the basic building block of Swazi society. Traditionally this comprises a number of huts, each built for a particular purpose – sleeping, food storage, brewing, etc. At the centre of a homestead is a circular enclosure, the sibaya, fenced with solid logs and branches, where the cattle are housed each night. This has symbolic importance as a store of wealth and prestige.

Opposite it is the great hut, indlukulu, occupied by the mother of the headman and used as the family shrine. The huts in such homesteads would once have been ‘beehive’ huts. Today most rural homesteads are a mixture of traditional huts and more modern, brick-built dwellings.

Either way, you can visit and enter homesteads when exploring rural Eswatini , and will receive a warm welcome, providing you show suitable respect and follow the correct protocol.

Most lodges and hotels can arrange a visit to a local homestead for their guests. There are a few places where communities are more accustomed to such visits, and where visitors will therefore be given a more comprehensive tour and explanation of traditions and daily life in rural Eswatini.

These are still very much genuine, real homesteads, not tourist creations. Shewula Mountain Camp, Myxo’s Waza Nowe Cultural Tours, and Umphakatsi Cultural Experience are probably the best places to get a genuine and comprehensive local homestead visit.

Alternatively, the Mantenga Cultural Village is a re-created homestead from around 1850 that is easy to visit to learn quickly about daily life

eSwatini (Swaziland) Tour from Maputo

tours to swaziland

eSwatini 1-day Tour

from Maputo

Tours Maputo runs regular 1-day safaris from Maputo to the wondrously unique Mountain Kingdom formelry known as Swaziland. The eSwatini border is only 1 hour from Maputo but our tour is a long adventure where we drive across a large proportion of the country.

The vast tapestry of African Culture is highlighted as we are transported from urban Maputo to one of the continent's most colourful countries. Our first stop is a quick stop at Hlane National Park to see if we can find Rhinos or Elephants.

We then move on to the famed Ezulwini Valley where much of the culture, both traditional and modern, are best exhibited. The highlight is the Mantenga Village where a lively Swazi dance, complete with booming drums will resonate with you long after your day trips ends. We have a few quiet moments at the waterfall and a revealing tour of a traditional Swazi village lead by a Swazi local.

Lunch is enjo y ed at the historic Malandela homestead with the neighbouring House on Fire showing that eSwatini's unique identity is still growing and developing. The final step on the tours is at the famous Swaziland Candle Factory which has now morphed into a hub of arts and crafts.
