9 best river cruises in Europe

Fran Golden

River cruising in Europe is one of those delightfully slow and easy modes of travel. You're in a small floating hotel, exploring calm inland waters, gliding past castles and vineyards and scenery that changes by the hour.

Daily escorted walking tours and other excursions provided by the river line take you to key UNESCO World Heritage Sites and other city and village attractions you've come to see. Or you can choose to explore on your own, which is easy since your ship often will dock right in town.

Lazy afternoons on the ship afford the time to sit in a lounge chair and watch the world go by — kids swimming from the riverbanks, farmers tending their crops, river birds flapping their wings — as you glide to your next destination.

Which European river should you explore? The choices are broader than you might expect.

The main rivers in Europe are the Danube and the Rhine and their tributaries. They are, by far, the most popular, doable either on one-week segments or longer itineraries that combine areas and sometimes combine rivers. Even if your cruise is only a week, don't underestimate the allure of relaxing for seven days on a river in France or on the dreamy Douro in Portugal.

Here are the best river cruises in Europe.

Upper Danube

best europe river cruise route

When it comes to Europe river cruises, a perfect seven-night starter sailing is the Upper Danube, which takes you through centuries of history as you explore Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary.

Ships visit such cultural hubs as Vienna, with its opera and art museums and elaborate royal palaces, and Budapest, Hungary, with its magnificent architecture and modern vibe. If your ship passes the Hungarian Parliament building at night, you're in for a treat; magnificently lit, it's one of the most photographed sights on the river.

Along the route, between Melk and Krems in Austria, you cruise through the Wachau Valley, a key wine-growing region producing rieslings and gruner veltliners, with sipping opportunities available. It's also a great place to bike, which is why it's nice to sail with lines, such as AmaWaterways , that carry bikes on board for passengers to use.

You might also have the option of a side trip to Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Mozart — and also where several scenes for the movie "Sound of Music" were filmed. A surprise for many is Old Town Bratislava, Slovakia, which might not have been on your must-do list but which charms with its beer culture and castles.

Lower Danube

best europe river cruise route

For a deep dive into Eastern Europe's past and present, the fascinating Lower Danube route between Budapest and Bucharest, Romania, explores history from the medieval times and Victorian era of Dracula to the rise of communism and the Bosnian War.

The seven-night river cruise takes you through Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. The most beautiful stretch of the river is a 62-mile passage through a gorge between the Balkan and Carpathian Mountains. It's also one of the deepest stretches of river in the world.

Other sights accessed on shore excursions via bus include Bulgaria's Belogradchik Rocks, which are naturally carved towering red rock pinnacles that appear to take forms such as "Madonna with child," and Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria's stunning medieval capital.

When it comes to top cruising rivers in Europe, the Rhine wins for natural beauty and fairytale landscapes. A cruise on the river between Amsterdam in The Netherlands, and Basel, Switzerland — a typical one-week route — takes you past expanses of slope-side vineyards, forests and mountains, historic cities and medieval half-timbered villages.

That's even before you get to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 40-mile stretch of river, between Rudesheim and Koblenz, Germany, has castles galore — you might imagine Rapunzel letting down her hair — and Lorelei Rock, the legendary cliff said to distract sailors with the mesmerizing song of a maiden.

The French city of Strasbourg, with its famous Gothic cathedral and robust Alsatian culinary scene, is often a favorite stop on Rhine itineraries, with other highlights including Heidelberg, Germany, and its imposing castle.

Sure, you can catch sight of the Eiffel Tower when boarding a river ship in Paris, but you can do that while staying in a hotel, too. The real attractions of a Seine River cruise are sailing on the river outside the city toward the English Channel and a visit to the beaches in Normandy for a perspective on World War II.

Your visit there and to the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, as well as other memorials and monuments to the fallen, is a poignant experience (one that requires a two-hour bus ride from your ship, however). Avalon Waterways brings a World War II expert on board to add insight on select sailings.

Other treasures exist along the Seine, not the least of which is Giverny, the home and gardens of impressionist artist Claude Monet. If you are a fan of his art, much of the property might seem familiar.

In historic Rouen, where Joan of Arc was martyred in the Middle Ages, stop by the Rouen Cathedral (another subject of Monet) before losing yourself on cobblestone streets with wonderful cafes.

Bordeaux river cruises are different from other water routes because you explore two short waterways — the Dordogne and Garonne Rivers — and the Gironde Estuary in Southwest France.

You'll spend more time ashore than floating down the river on this itinerary, with your ship docked for two nights in the city of Bordeaux, a mini-Paris with grand 18th-century buildings. Who cares when you are in the epicenter of French culture, in one of the most celebrated wine regions in the world?

Bordeaux serves up the opportunity to sip Medoc, Margaux, Saint-Emilion, Pomerol and Sauternes wines as you expand your wine education. You'll visit vineyards and gorgeous chateaus. Your cruise line might even host a dinner at a wine estate one evening. If you plan your cruise for September or October, you'll be able to admire the grape harvest.

Rhone and Saone

best europe river cruise route

Another must for wine-lovers is exploring the interior of France, sipping Cotes du Rhone in such famous winemaking regions as Hermitage and Chateauneuf-du-Pape in Provence and Beaune in Burgundy.

Rhone and Saone River cruises typically sail between Lyon and Arles or Avignon, and they're top-loaded with such non-wine attractions as the Roman aqueduct Pont du Gard and the Roman Arles Amphitheater, as well as the massive Palais des Papes (Papal Palace) in Avignon. You'll also be able to take in the lavender fields, haystacks and other scenes that inspired painters like Paul Cezanne and Vincent Van Gogh.

best europe river cruise route

For a lazy, dreamy, wonderful river cruise experience, nothing quite beats exploring the wine regions of Portugal on the Douro, one of the major rivers through the Iberian Peninsula. The home base for these river cruises is Porto, Portugal, with its historic city center, spectacular bridges and port houses.

On one-week cruises, you'll follow the river 130 miles past green hillside vineyards in the Douro River Valley, a UNESCO-recognized destination, before turning around at the Spanish border. The river cruises typically include a visit to the university town of Salamanca in northern Spain. Viticulture is very much the lesson en route, as you learn about port production on the "River of Gold."

Due to fluctuating water levels and narrow passages, the Elbe is a challenging river that runs 680 miles between the Czech Republic and Germany. Historically, it formed part of the border between East Germany and West Germany.

River cruising here is a rare experience. Viking River Cruises is one of the few lines that visits (another is the French line CroisiEurope), offering 10-day itineraries that combine hotel stays in the cities of Berlin and Prague with a stretch of river between Prague and Wittenburg, Germany.

The cruises are on ships built specifically for the Elbe route. They stop in places such as resurgent Dresden, heavily bombed during World War II but expertly rebuilt; the Saxon Switzerland region of Germany with its striking sandstone rock formations; and the spa town of Bad Schandau.

The Po River in northern Italy is tidal, making it another challenging waterway. However, it affords the opportunity to combine a visit to Venice with a river cruise. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises does the Po in high style with its 126-passenger S.S. La Venizia, completely decked out with a sense of place, from Fortuny fabrics and Murano glass to its gilded accents.

The one-week route doesn't take you far but does include the walled city of Padua, the charming fishing village of Chioggia, and the culinary mecca of Bologna.

For those looking for a longer experience, Uniworld cleverly combines a Po cruise with luxury rail journeys to places like Istanbul, Switzerland and beyond.

Romantic Rhine (Southbound) 2024

Far exceeded my expectations. To be clear, I hate traveling, I did it for 40 years and was loath to start again retired. But was I wrong, this was a great trip and vacation. I’ve been on ocean cruises but river cruising is so different. The boat is small, one meets many people, the food (except for one meal) was very good, wines good, excursions good, just well done, well organized, no problems, no mess, just enjoy. Truly is one price. I can’t wait to go back.

This was our first river cruise and everything went beyond our expectation. Services: the staff were accommodating and helpful. Tours: various excursions to choose from for different age group and they were well-organized. Ship: beautiful boutique-design ship. The only cons is a slow Wifi connection but it ain't a big deal. There were so many onboard activity that kept us entertaining. I noticed that the cruise operates in eco-friendly manner, i.e. they eliminates sing-use plastic. That's a big plus!!!!

Great company to cruise with. Ship carries 110 passengers. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner each day. Plenty of stops to sightsee. The castles along the Rhine make trip a very enjoyable cruise. All staff were great.
It was a great cruise. The food was amazing, the crew was really helpful, and the tours and tour guides were great. The only thing to imporve on if the WiFi which only worked half the time.
The Wi-Fi didn’t work as expected and it caused quite an inconvenience. The excursion plan is not as clear either. Overall it’s still a good tour but I think my last Danube river with Avalon is better than this rhino river cruise.

River Cruise Itineraries in Europe: A Guide to the Best Routes and Destinations

by Judith Eve | Jan 20, 2024 | Destination Guides & Ports

best europe river cruise route

River cruises in Europe are becoming increasingly popular among travelers who want to explore the continent's waterways while enjoying the comforts of a luxurious cruise ship. With a variety of itineraries to choose from, travelers can experience the rich history, culture, and natural beauty of Europe in a unique and relaxing way.

best europe river cruise route

Europe is home to some of the world's most iconic rivers, including the Danube, Rhine, Seine, and Douro, just to name a few. Each river has its own distinct character, with breathtaking scenery, charming towns and cities, and fascinating cultural attractions along the way. River cruise itineraries in Europe vary in length, but most are between seven and 14 days, allowing travelers to experience multiple destinations in one trip.

Whether you're interested in exploring the historic castles and vineyards of the Rhine, cruising through the heart of Paris on the Seine, or discovering the rich cultural heritage of the Danube, there's a river cruise itinerary in Europe that's perfect for you. With comfortable accommodations, delicious cuisine, and a range of onboard activities, river cruises offer a unique and unforgettable way to explore the beauty and diversity of Europe.

What Makes River Cruising Unique

European river cruises offer a unique way to explore Europe's rivers and landscapes. Unlike ocean cruises, river cruises provide an intimate and immersive experience, allowing passengers to explore small villages and towns that are not accessible by larger ships.

River cruising also offers a more relaxed pace of travel, with fewer passengers and a more personalized experience. Passengers can enjoy the scenic views from the comfort of their cabins or the ship's common areas, which often include a sun deck, lounge, and dining room.

Another unique aspect of river cruising is the ability to dock in the heart of cities and towns, allowing passengers to easily explore the local culture and attractions. This is a stark contrast to ocean cruises, which often require a lengthy bus or taxi ride to reach the city center.

Benefits of a River Cruise Over Ocean Cruises

In addition to the unique experience, river cruising offers several benefits over ocean cruises. One of the biggest advantages is the ability to explore multiple destinations without the hassle of packing and unpacking. Unlike ocean cruises, which often require passengers to spend a day or two at sea between ports, river cruises offer daily excursions to new destinations.

River cruises also offer a more inclusive experience, with many amenities and excursions included in the price of the cruise. This can include guided tours, meals, and entertainment. This is in contrast to ocean cruises, which often require passengers to pay extra for these amenities.

Finally, river cruising offers a more environmentally friendly way to travel. River cruises use less fuel and produce fewer emissions than ocean cruises, making them a more sustainable option for travelers who are conscious of their carbon footprint.

Overall, European river cruises offer a unique and enjoyable way to explore Europe's rivers and landscapes. With a more personalized experience, inclusive amenities, and a more sustainable approach to travel, river cruising is a great alternative to traditional ocean cruises.

Planning Your River Cruise Itinerary

When planning a river cruise itinerary in Europe, there are several factors to consider. From the itinerary itself to what to pack and how to navigate onboard amenities, here are some tips to help make the most of your river cruise experience.

Choosing the Right River Cruise Itinerary

One of the first things to consider when planning a river cruise itinerary is the destination. Europe offers a wide range of river cruise itineraries, from the Rhine to the Danube, each with its own unique attractions and sights to see. Some itineraries focus on historic cities, while others highlight natural wonders such as the tulip fields of the Netherlands or the castles of the Rhine. It's important to choose an itinerary that matches your interests and travel style.

Another consideration is the time of year. River cruises in Europe typically run from March through December, with peak season in the summer months. Spring and fall can be a great time to take a river cruise, with fewer crowds and milder weather.

What to Pack for a River Cruise

When packing for a river cruise, it's important to keep in mind the dress code and climate. Most river cruises have a casual dress code, with comfortable clothing suitable for daytime excursions and more formal attire for evening dinners. It's also important to pack for the weather, with layers and rain gear as needed.

Other items to consider packing include comfortable walking shoes, a camera, and any necessary medications. Some river cruises offer laundry facilities onboard, so it's possible to pack light and do laundry as needed.

Navigating Onboard Amenities

River cruises offer a range of onboard amenities, from dining options to entertainment and activities. It's important to familiarize yourself with the ship's layout and schedule of events, so you don't miss out on any activities or meals.

Most river cruises offer a range of dining options, from buffet-style breakfasts to multi-course dinners. Some ships also have a lounge area for drinks and socializing, as well as onboard entertainment such as live music or lectures.

Overall, planning a river cruise itinerary in Europe requires careful consideration of destination, time of year, and onboard amenities. By choosing the right itinerary and packing appropriately, travelers can enjoy a comfortable and enjoyable river cruise experience.

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Cruising

Sustainable and eco-friendly cruising is becoming increasingly popular among travelers who are conscious of their environmental impact. European river cruises are no exception, with many cruise lines taking steps to reduce their carbon footprint, minimize waste, and preserve the natural beauty of the regions they visit.

One way that river cruise lines are promoting sustainable and eco-friendly cruising is by implementing energy-efficient technologies on their ships. For example, some ships use hybrid engines that combine traditional diesel engines with electric motors, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Others use solar panels to generate electricity and heat water.

In addition to using energy-efficient technologies, many cruise lines are taking steps to reduce waste and promote recycling. Some ships have eliminated single-use plastics, such as straws and water bottles, and offer guests reusable alternatives. Others have implemented composting programs to reduce food waste, and some even donate leftover food to local charities.

Guests can also participate in eco-friendly activities while on board, such as nature walks and wildlife spotting tours. These activities allow guests to experience the natural beauty of the regions they visit while promoting conservation and environmental awareness.

Overall, sustainable and eco-friendly cruising is a great way for travelers to explore Europe's stunning waterways while minimizing their environmental impact. By choosing a cruise line that prioritizes sustainability, guests can enjoy a friendly and responsible travel experience that supports the preservation of Europe's natural beauty for generations to come.

With an overwhelming number of european river cruise adventures to choose from, we’ve narrowed it down to 7 of the region’s most popular and picturesque rivers..

Best European River Cruises

The Douro River is a rising star in the river cruising world, with almost every major river cruise line introducing itineraries here in recent years.

Laid-back and leisurely, yet heavy on adventure and destination immersion, the river cruising industry is booming (both at home and abroad) for good reason. Sure, there’s the unpack-once-and-go appeal of the floating hotel format that’s common to all cruise vacations. But river cruising stands out from its oceangoing counterpart for its small ships (averaging capacity for around 150 guests), rates that bundle in value-add extras like guided excursions and libations with meals, and itineraries that are positively port intensive.

Europe is at the vanguard of this greater global river cruise phenomenon, where winding waterways—from the Danube to the Douro, and the Rhine to the Rhône—invite voyaging inland to the continent’s heartland, areas that are inaccessible to ocean-bound ships. Here you’ll find storybook-setting riverbanks lined with medieval castles and sloping vineyards, historic cities and agreeable villages. And on any given weeklong sailing, it’s not unusual to drift through three or more European countries en route, affording the perfect sampler itinerary for any eager explorer of Europe. These are seven of the very best European river cruises to take.

Passau, Germany, is one of the Old-World gems that line the Danube; city lovers also appreciate access to stunning European capitals like Vienna and Budapest.

Danube River

Europe’s second-longest river at 1,770 miles (after Russia’s Volga), the storied Danube River—immortalized as “the Blue Danube” in composer Johann Strauss II’s famous waltz—rises from western Germany ’s Black Forest mountains, emptying out to the Black Sea at Romania. En route, it traverses 10 countries: Germany, Austria , Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia , Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine—with access to major European capitals (including Vienna , Budapest, Bratislava, and Belgrade) along its banks. With plenty of appealing Old-World riverfront attractions (castles, fortresses, churches, abbeys, and vineyards galore), paired with a front-row seat to some beautiful blockbuster cities (like Budapest and Vienna), it’s little wonder that it’s one of the world’s most popular river cruise regions.

Itineraries typically break down into the more popular Upper Danube runs, between Bavaria and Budapest (with featured stops in Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary), or the lesser-explored Lower Danube, which typically connects Budapest to Bucharest on a river route through Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania.

Set Sail: Sail the Danube on AmaWaterways’s May 2019-launched, 196-guest AmaMagna , which has been making waves for its design; at 72 feet across, it measures twice the width of standard European riverboats. Guests get spacious digs to spread out in (nearly half of the staterooms are balcony-trimmed suites, starting at a roomy 355 square feet), access to four restaurants and lounges, plus riverboat rarities like a water sports platform, heated pool, cinema, and a sizeable wellness studio (host to fitness classes and spa treatment rooms). Seven-night Danube itineraries run between Budapest and Vilshofen, Germany (with stops in Bratislava; Passau, Germany; and several ports in Austria—including Vienna—en route); or sign on for a festive Christmas markets sailing around the winter holidays. Rates from $2,549/person; amawaterways.com

Sail the Rhine in style aboard one of Crystal Cruises’s plush riverboats, with offerings like personal butlers, an indoor pool, and in-room iPads.

Rhine River

The legendary, 765-mile-long Rhine—which flows from the Swiss Alps toward the North Sea at The Netherlands—has served as an important continental transport route for centuries, teeming with historical, cultural, and economic significance for Europe. Regional riverboat itineraries are extremely popular, bringing guests to celebrated cities like Basel, Switzerland, and Strasbourg, France, and placing an emphasis on Germany with calls in locales like Koblenz, Mannheim, Rüdesheim, and Cologne.

Here, riverbanks are loaded with diversions, including a distinct riverscape flanked by fairy-tale castles, along with a setting steeped in history and myths (such as that of the Lorelei siren, who supposedly lures sailors and fishermen to their deaths). The most popular itineraries run between Basel and Amsterdam , with several stops in France and Germany en route.

Set Sail: Upscale Crystal Cruises branched out from ocean sailing to include a river cruise arm in 2016. Since then, it’s emerged as an industry tour de force, most especially on the Rhine River, where it now operates Crystal Bach , Crystal Mahler , Crystal Debussy , and Crystal Ravel , four intimate, 106-passenger, new-build ships that have launched over the past two years. On the only all-suite, all-balcony riverboats in Europe, expect plush onboard touches like in-room iPads, personal butlers, and an indoor pool, along with loaner e-bikes and kayaks for enhanced port exploration. Itineraries range from 7 to 16 nights in duration; try the weeklong “Splendors of the Rhine” sailing, with runs between Amsterdam and Basel and stops in Strasbourg and throughout Germany (at Cologne, Koblenz, Rüdesheim, Speyer, and Breisach). Rates from $3,799/person; crystalcruises.com

UNESCO World Heritage site Kizhi Pogost with its 18th century wooden churches is a popular stop on Volga cruises.

Volga River

The vast Volga is Europe’s longest river (running for some 2,200 miles from central Russia to the Caspian Sea) and sailing it—along with several adjoining waterways (including a network of lakes, like Lake Ladoga)—makes for a fascinating voyage of discovery through Russia. Itineraries run between the nation’s two great cities—St. Petersburg and Moscow—and cruising here pairs time spent exploring both culturally and historically rich metropolises on either end (multi-night calls are typically incorporated at each). Plus, journeys factor in plenty of stops in rural villages and smaller “Golden Ring” cities (including Uglich and Yaroslavl—two featured stops on this designated tourist route, which connects historic locales northeast of Moscow) that span the 400-plus miles between the two mega-cities. And while most days are spent exploring onion-domed Orthodox churches, icon-filled monasteries, and myriad other historic sights, keep in mind that you may have longer sailing stretches between more distant ports (pack some Tolstoy to fill in the gaps with on-deck reading).

Set Sail: Viking has been sailing Russia’s waterways since the company’s debut more than 20 years ago, and today it expertly executes Volga voyages via a fleet of five 196- to 204-passenger riverboats. Its popular 12-night “Waterways of the Tsars” itinerary features three-night stays in both Moscow and St. Petersburg, calls in the Golden Ring cities of Uglich and Yaroslavl, and stops in the village of Kuzino (gateway to the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery) and at the open-air museums at Kizhi and Mandrogy. Expect unique excursions like a private tour of the art-filled vaults of the Hermitage and a hosted home visit for tea and vodka with a local Russian family in Uglich. Rates from $5,499/person; vikingrivercruises.com

Douro River

Rising from north-central Spain and making its way for over 550 miles across northern Spain and Portugal, before emptying into the Atlantic, the Douro is a rising star in the river cruising world. Nearly every major river cruise line has introduced itineraries here in recent years. Most voyages come bookended by the lively cities of Porto, Portugal, and Salamanca, Spain (the latter is typically accessed by the Spanish border village of Vega de Terrón)—or simply sail round-trip out of Porto—with calls at quieter ports and old hilltop towns along the way (like Peso de Régua, at the heart of port wine country).

Here, however, it’s less about any blockbuster sights than the pastoral landscapes, pocked by plenty of quintas (Portuguese for wineries) and verdant vineyards—many of which fall within the UNESCO-recognized Douro River Valley. It’s a natural fit for oenophiles, who will have ample opportunity to tipple the local bounty en route, including, naturally, aromatic port aplenty.

Set Sail: Tauck will launch its presence on the river in 2020 with an all-new riverboat—the 84-passenger m/s Andorinha —that was purpose-built for the Douro, with a reduced passenger capacity that affords roomier proportions compared to most competitor ships on the waterway. The ship will run a trio of Douro River itineraries, including one designed just for families and another featuring land-based extensions in Lisbon and Madrid . Or try its seven-night “Villages and Vintages” itinerary, which cruises round-trip from Porto with stops in Portugal at Régua, Pocinho, Pinhão, and Guimarães. Excursion highlights include an onshore wine-pairing dinner at a Douro Valley wine estate and a guided bike ride through vinho verde wine country. Rates from $4,190/person; tauck.com

Rhône River

This 505-mile stretch between the Swiss Alps and southern France lets out in the Mediterranean Sea (near Marseille), affording a lovely ride along the way, marked by Alpine scenery filled in with gorges and valleys. Take in the sights of France’s Provence region, too, with its wine country, groves of olives and citrus, and fragrant fields of lavender (landscapes that inspired Vincent van Gogh and other artists). It’s a downright delicious option for epicures, with itineraries that are anchored in Lyon, considered France’s gastronomical epicenter. Those with a taste for antiquity will appreciate a journey here, too, thanks to regional Roman landmarks like the Pont du Gard aqueduct or Arles amphitheater.

Most of the France-exclusive itineraries here run for a week between Lyon and Arles or Avignon. Some continue north on the Saône River, the chief tributary of the Rhône (the two merge in Lyon), and into the heart of Burgundy; it’s a gateway to stops like Burgundy’s wine capital at Beaune.

Set Sail: In May, Avalon Waterways rolled out new “Active & Discovery” itineraries on the Rhône, on southern France runs between Arles and Lyon, featuring stops in Tournon, Viviers, and Avignon. A departure from the one-size-fits-all excursion packages offered by many of its competitors, on these sailings guests can select from nearly three dozen customizable tour offerings, like a painting class in Arles, a wine-blending workshop in Avignon, or a mountain bike ride in Beaujolais. The seven-night itineraries unfold aboard the 166-passenger Avalon Poetry II , one of the line’s signature “Suite Ships,” featuring staterooms that transform into veritable open-air balconies via their wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows. Rates from $3,099/person; avalonwaterways.com

Seine River

The storied Seine—revered as one of the world’s most romantic rivers, thanks to its deep ties to Paris —extends beyond the City of Lights for fascinating river voyages into northern France. The 485-mile-long waterway flows northwest from France’s Burgundy area near Dijon, through Paris, and into the Normandy region, before emptying into the English Channel (at Le Havre).

Paris is the point of embarkation (and also disembarkation) for most round-trip sailings here, affording time to enjoy a small taste of the city (where at least one overnight stay is commonplace). Typical itinerary highlights include Monet’s gardens at Giverny ; the Normandy D-Day beaches (with 75th-anniversary D-Day landing commemorations underway in 2019 ); medieval Rouen, with its Gothic cathedral; and the picturesque fishing village of Honfleur.

Set Sail: River cruising has traditionally attracted more mature travelers, although Disney stirred things up with its special brand of family-friendly magic when it launched a partnership with AmaWaterways in 2016 (via its river cruise–inclusive Adventures by Disney arm). Sail aboard the 144-guest AmaLyra on the brand’s new-for-2019, seven-night Seine River voyage to Normandy, sailing round-trip from Paris and including a two-night, land-based extension in the city. (Note that departures in 2020 are cruise only.) Calls include Vernon/Giverny, Le Havre, Rouen, Les Andelys, and Conflans, where family-focused excursions include active tours like hiking the cliffs of Étretat or immersive local experiences, such as a Monet-inspired painting workshop in Giverny or a Normandy apple orchard visit (complete with a calvados tasting for the grown-ups). Rates from $5,169/person (discounted kids’ rates from $4,999/person); adventuresbydisney.com

Bordeaux waterways

Another river cruise alternative within France is set within the Bordeaux region in the southwest of the country, where sailings are offered on the Dordogne and Garonne rivers and Gironde estuary (which leads toward the Atlantic Ocean). An increasing number of river cruise options here are anchored out of the UNESCO-protected city of Bordeaux, where ships overnight so that guests can discover its historic structures, outstanding dining, and lively riverfront. From there, itineraries emphasize the surrounding rural areas and most especially, the fine wines that are synonymous with the region. Common ports of call include Blaye, Cadillac, Libourne, and Pauillac, and itineraries come jam packed with visits to vineyards and wine châteaus in celebrated regional wine destinations like Médoc, Sauternes, and Saint-Émilion.

Set Sail: Upscale Uniworld launched the line’s 124-passenger, French-themed S.S. Bon Voyage (fresh from a $14 million renovation) in April, which runs seven-night “Brilliant Bordeaux” itineraries on the Garonne, Dordogne, and Gironde waterways. Sailing round-trip from the city of Bordeaux, the itinerary calls on Blaye, Bourg sur Gironde, Cussac-Fort-Médoc, Pauillac, Cadillac, and Libourne en route. Diverse excursion highlights include a private wine tasting at the Château Latour (on the Médoc peninsula), a yoga session at the 17th-century Blaye citadel, and a sunrise hike at Dune du Pyla, Europe’s tallest sand dune. Back on board the ship, unwind at the deck-top infinity pool or while enjoying a food-and-wine pairing dinner at the intimate La Cave des Vins venue. Rates from $2,499/person; uniworld.com

Leisurely and luxurious, with incredible food and wine, our europe river cruises are some of the best….

best europe river cruise route

R iver cruising in Europe is all about life in the slow lane. It’s a way of exploring the history, cuisine and nature of a region as you drift gently past vineyards, meadows and towns.

Rivers have always formed essential transport arteries across the continent, so it’s along their banks that Europe’s great cities have grown, from Budapest and Vienna to Cologne, Paris and Prague . A river cruise is an effortless, stress-free way to take all this in, returning to the comfort of your luxurious floating hotel at the end of each day.

Here are 15 popular river voyages in Europe, whether you’re planning your first cruise or are already a river cruising connoisseur.

A canal in Burano (Alamy)

1. Explore the Venetian Lagoon

Best for romance With big cruise ships now banned from the heart of Venice , an unobtrusive luxury river cruise boat is the best way to explore the city and the islands of the misty lagoon. You’ll dock at San Basilio, on the Giudecca Canal, an easy walk from Piazza San Marco. You’ll usually spend three or four nights here, with plenty of time to lose yourself among Venice’s greeny-blue canals, marble palaces and sunlit squares.

There’ll be forays into the lagoon and, water levels permitting, along the River Po. Here you can take in islands including Burano, famed for its brightly painted houses; Murano, centre of Venice’s glassblowing industry; and sleepy Torcello. Most cruise lines offer a day trip to Bologna, including a pasta-making demonstration, while others treat you to the unforgettable experience of a private, after-hours view of St Mark’s Basilica, guided by an art historian.

The Moselle at Bernkastel-Kues (Alamy)

2. Mosey along the Moselle

Best for longer sailings The narrow Moselle river flows into the Rhine at Koblenz and is often featured as part of a longer European river cruise. The Moselle valley is especially scenic, with terraced vineyards clinging to almost sheer slopes guarded by craggy castles, and the banks dotted with water meadows and quiet villages. The river loops around a series of curves as you head upstream to the historic villages of Cochem and Bernkastel, both famed for their wine production, and on towards Trier. The city has some of the best-preserved Roman structures in the whole of Germany , including the original Porta Nigra town gate and an amphitheatre built to seat 20,000.

The Danube from the hillside town of Petrovaradin in Serbia (Alamy)

3. Uncover history along the Eastern Danube

Best for going back in time Beyond Budapest, the Danube cuts its way through the southern Carpathian Mountains, continuing under the vast skies of the steppes, and finally reaching its marshy delta in Romania. Along the way are cool cities such as Novi Sad and Belgrade, standing in stark contrast to swathes of forested countryside in Bulgaria and Serbia. There’s ancient history in Veliko Târnovo, the former capital of Bulgaria; at the medieval fortress of Baba Vidin; and in the wind-sculpted rock formations at Belogradchik. But this is also an opportunity to learn about the tragedies of the much more recent Balkans conflict, which kept this stretch of the river off limits for decades.

Several lines have now added the eastern Danube to their river cruise collections, some of them providing an extension to Bucharest, a city of grand boulevards and brutalist architecture, and to mysterious Transylvania, a region of jagged mountains where vampires are still very much part of the local psyche.

The harbour at Veere (Alamy)

4. Admire windmills and art on the Dutch and Belgian waterways

Best for culture Spring is the most popular time to cruise the network of waterways criss-crossing the flat countryside where the multiple arms of the Rhine flow into the North Sea. The fields in spring are dazzling with stripes of scarlet, orange and yellow tulips, while a day at the award-winning Keukenhof Gardens, brilliant with blooms, is a winner of an excursion. But this historic region is worth exploring by water at any time of year. Cruises may start in Amsterdam , where you’ll need a couple of days to take in the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh museum, Anne Frank’s House and the canals. Stops on the voyage might include the medieval harbour town of Veere, and the Unesco World Heritage Site of Kinderdijk, its canals lined with 18th-century windmills. Across the border in Belgium, you can shop for diamonds in Antwerp and handmade chocolate in Bruges , or join a beer tasting tour in Brussels .

5. Sample fine wines on the Garonne and Dordogne

Best for oenophiles Sailing through the rolling countryside of one of the world’s greatest wine-growing areas, a cruise from Bordeaux is, naturally, all about wine. The inclusive experience of a cruise here will feature visits to St Emilion, Bergerac, Cadillac and Sauternes, with tours of honey-coloured chateaux slumbering in the midst of lush vineyards. Pedal between the vines on guided cycling excursions, drool over the cheeses in the market at Libourne and gaze from the sun deck at the passing countryside, with salty sea breezes from the nearby Atlantic hanging in the air.

You’ll sail three waterways: the Gironde estuary, and the Dordogne and the Garonne rivers, with the city of Bordeaux sprawling elegantly along the banks of the latter. Bordeaux is one of the few ports in Europe where ships on ocean cruises dock alongside smaller riverboats. Here, check out the grand 18th-century architecture, the classy shopping and the cleverly designed La Cité du Vin wine museum.

6. Soak in the scenery along the Seine

Best for countryside There are many reasons to cruise the Seine, not least the glorious countryside of Normandy, with apple orchards, weeping willows and thatched cottages lining the banks. You’ll call at historic Rouen, and have a chance to visit the poignant D-Day landing beaches and cemeteries. Cruises also take in the Palace of Versailles and, in season, Monet’s house and garden at Giverny.

Best of all, though, you’re usually docked close to the centre of Paris at the beginning and the end of the cruise, with all its magnificent sights a stroll away, from the Champs Elysées and Montmartre to the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay and the Eiffel Tower. Add this altogether and a voyage on the Seine has to be one of the loveliest cruises in Europe in terms of scenery and history — and the most effortless way to enjoy Paris and the surrounding countryside.

The Elbe at Dresden (Alamy)

7. Enjoy culture along the Elbe

Best for dramatic scenery The Elbe is tricky for most river cruise ships to navigate but a generation of shallow-draft boats and paddlewheelers is able to take you from edgy Berlin to medieval Prague . A typical cruise visits Wittenberg, including a look at Dr Martin Luther’s house; Meissen, of pottery fame; and elegant Dresden. The landscape is especially spectacular as you head south from here, cruising through “Saxon Switzerland”, where the river slices through dramatic sandstone mountain ranges. Some river cruises end in Melnik in the Czech Republic, while others join the Vltava river and sail into the heart of historic Prague. Either way, you can easily bolt on a stay in Prague as an extension to your trip.

Konopiste Castle (Alamy)

8. See Bohemia on the Vltava

Best for unique sailings The Vltava is shallow enough in places to wade across, so it’s understandably not an option for the ships of most river cruise lines. But the lightest vessels can sail here, heading deep into the countryside of the Czech Republic. A voyage on the Vltava is certainly an unusual experience, offering an intriguing insight into forested Bohemia as you head south from Prague to Stechovice, famous for its gold mines and pottery, and the former Habsburg hunting lodge, Konopiste Castle, former home of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. There’s time in Prague itself, too, to see the Charles Bridge, the castle and the atmospheric old town.

Half-timbered houses on the marketplace in Miltenberg (Alamy)

9. Discover medieval villages on the Main

Best for a Christmas cruise While many European cruises sail from Amsterdam to Basel along the Rhine, others leave the river near Mainz and sail the navigable stretch of the Main. This takes you as far as Bamberg, where the Main-Danube canal begins. The river flows through forested hills and past lush water meadows. In between Frankfurt and Würzburg, you’ll visit medieval Miltenberg, its crooked, half-timbered houses straight out of a Grimm’s Fairytale. A cruise in winter is particularly scenic, the banks cloaked in snow and the Christmas markets in full swing.

Frankfurt, Germany’s financial centre (hence its nickname, “Mainhattan”), is a largely modern city with a sensitively restored medieval heart and lively pubs lining the riverbank. In the elegant university town of Würzburg, meanwhile, you’ll visit the Residenz, one of Europe’s most opulent Baroque palaces.

The view from Eigg across the Sound of Rum (Alamy)

10. Cruise the Caledonian Canal

Best for hunting for the Loch Ness Monster The Caledonian Canal follows the natural fault line of the Great Glen, which slices through northern Scotland . A cruise along it means sailing over silent lochs, framed by brooding mountains, forest and heather-clad hillsides, on a voyage that takes you between Fort William, on Scotland’s west coast, and Inverness in the northeast. You’ll explore the sea lochs of the west, with day excursions to the Hebridean islands of Eigg, Iona and Mull, before sailing the length of Loch Linnhe and into the canal itself. One of the highlights here is Neptune’s Staircase, an extraordinary flight of eight locks. You’ll also sail the length of narrow Loch Ness, sheer-sided mountains plunging into the deep, dark, peaty waters that conceal the secret of “Nessie”.

The most beautiful cruises around the UK

11. Fall for the romantic Rhine

Best for seeing the Black Forest One of Europe’s longest and most important waterways begins its journey high in the Swiss Alps and finds its way to the North Sea in the Netherlands. The Rhine is yours to discover on a romantic river cruise — a voyage that can cover the Netherlands, Germany and Austria all on one sailing, on a trip that can last up to 20 days. Whichever direction you choose to head in, and whichever cruise ship you choose, you’ll pass lush vineyards, medieval towns and dramatic rocky gorges with stops to explore the cities of Strasbourg, Koblenz and Cologne. It’s also possible to go beyond the typical Black Forest routes and wind along the Moselle.

12. Cruise the Rhône to Provence

Best for sun-soaked French landscapes If you’d like to experience France in microcosm, a cruise along the Rhône is going to tick all the boxes. Sailing one of Europe’s finest rivers will take you to the vineyards of Burgundy and charming Avignon, showcasing some of the country’s finest landscapes on the way. Highlights include winding through Burgundy and the sun-soaked countryside of Provence. You’ll explore Lyons , with its grand boulevards and quaint old town; the medieval streets of Avignon and its opulent papal palace; the stupendous Roman amphitheatre in Arles — and much more.

13. Find the treasures of the Douro

Best for food and drink Wine tasting, gourmet cuisine, beautiful landscapes… the treasures of the Douro River are easy to discover on a luxurious river cruise from Portugal’s Porto to the Spanish city of Salamanca. Enjoy the medieval architecture and bountiful local tastes of Porto’s wine regions, before heading west, into the peaceful Iberian countryside. Shore inclusions allow you to discover the most beautiful towns and monasteries in Portugal along the way, including the ceramic-laden Lamego and the 12th-century walled village of Castelo Rodrigo. After crossing the border into Spain, you’ll try a flamenco show and tour of Salamanca — a historic beauty with a fascinating past.

14. Discover the Blue Danube

Best for variety The Danube River has been the lifeblood of Central Europe for centuries and there’s no better way to experience it than on a river cruise. Awake each morning in a new destination — such as the charming cities of Vienna and Bratislava, home to some of Europe’s most stunning Christmas markets – and spend your days admiring the ever-changing countryside of Austria , Slovakia and Hungary. You’ll soon see how Budapest , the ‘Pearl of the Danube’, earned its nickname: on the western bank of the Danube you’ll find the medieval city of Buda, and on the opposite bank is Pest, with its fabulous neo-Gothic architecture and fistfuls of Unesco World Heritage Sites.

15. Discover the heart of southern Spain

Best for impressive architecture The very name Andalucia conjures up images of flamenco and sherry, of narrow winding streets through historic old towns. It’s not normally associated with cruising, but it’s possible to experience the charms of southern Spain and see some of its greatest classical cities on a river cruise. You’ll wander the elaborate Alcazars and beautiful gardens of Seville , discover the sherry bodegas of Jerez, spend an evening in the coastal city of Cadiz, and discover Córdoba’s world-famous mosque-cathedral.

Among a certain segment of travellers, cruising is sometimes maligned: the dismal buffet and watered-down cocktails. Those kitschy lounge acts. The contrived shore excursions. But that, as they say, was then.

1. The Romantic Rhine, Germany

2. the river of gold, portugal, 3. the canals of burgundy, france, 4. the danube: prague to budapest, 5. the norwegian fjords.

Cruising today, and especially river cruising, offers an entirely different experience , from celebrity chef-driven cuisine to stargazing lounges to bike rides along leafy canals.

River cruising is, in a way, ideal for those who don’t consider themselves cruisers: the ships are relatively small and intimate; land is always in sight, offering daily access to villages and towns; and dinners are elegant affairs at linen-topped tables, instead of noisy group melees.

Here are our five top picks for European river cruises, where the experience is the destination and the journey.

The Rhine has been immortalized for centuries: it inspired Richard Wagner to write his first opera, and the river’s famous Lorelei rock – supposedly helmed by a swirling-haired siren – has starred in poems, rock songs, and even as a Marvel Comics character.

Germany’s longest river is also one of Europe’s most beautiful cruise routes, particularly the 65-kilometre Middle Rhine , which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the “Romantic Rhine.”

During the Roman Empire, the Rhine was a strategic waterway, and looming over its banks are castles and crumbling fortresses that date back a thousand years.

The Rhine scenery is stunning – hilltop castles presiding over terraced, fragrant vineyards. Plus, there's Riesling-tasting galore, the Mechanisches Muskikkabinett (Mechanical Museum) in Rüdesheim and a stop in Heidelberg , Germany’s oldest university town.

The Romantic Rhine, Germany

Travel with: CroisiEurope. Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2016, the family-owned CroisiEurope offers affordable prices, but amenities are on par with the highest-level ships: spacious decks, hotel-style beds, and elegant dining rooms with French menus developed by notable chefs Paul Bocuse and Marc Haeberlin.

The traditional fado songs of Portugal are soulful and poetic, much like cruising the country’s waterways. Explore the river Douro and sip aromatic port in the country’s birth city, Porto ; explore the lively Spanish university city of Salamanca ; and, ease into the evening to the mournful sounds of fado.

A cruise down the Douro glides past looming rock formations and the Valerian and Pocinho Dams, to Barca d’Alva, with an excursion to Castelo Rodrigo, surrounded by almond trees, and on to Pinhão and the Douro Wine District.

Along the way, sample Portuguese specialties like salt cod, caldo verde stew, and the country’s famous port wine.

Viking River Cruises

Travel with: Viking River Cruises winds through Portugal on the Douro River, from the capital city of Lisbon to Porto and its Baroque cathedrals. Their Scandinavian-themed vessels also maximize scenery-watching, with panoramic windows throughout.

Best known for its centuries-old winemaking traditions, Burgundy is going through a rebirth, with wine-tasting salons that are spotlighting the latest oenological tech products and new farm-to-fork restaurants and upmarket B&Bs.

A cruise here floats lazily through the heart of Burgundy , stopping at family wineries like Domaine Briday in the northern Côte Chalonnaise, which is known for its white wines and the sparkling Cremant de Bourgogne.

Highlights include the Chateau de Rochepot, crowned by Burgundian multicoloured glazed tiles; the medieval wine capital of Beaune ; and, above all, the barge’s slow pace. The full trip is around 75 miles, which you could cover in a morning drive in a rental car. Instead, this cruise can be spread out over six days, and the hypnotic movement of a barge is a powerful sedative, especially after a glass of Burgundy red.

Burgundy, canals

Travel with: Eropean Waterways . There is a Company with collection of hotel barge cruises. For over 35 years, they has specialised in creating luxury barge holidays on some of the most beautiful waterways in Europe.

French Country Waterways . The oldest U.S.-owned barge company operating in France, French Country Waterways is the elegant godmother of the canals. The ship interiors are done up in dark-wood paneling, plush sofas with tasseled pillows, and a grand communal dining table, laden with heavy silverware and flickering candles.

It’s shortly after that first beer lands on the table, with views of the city’s famous bridges glinting beyond, that Kafka’s famous quote hits home: “Prague never lets you go. This dear little mother has sharp claws.”

After a couple of days in Prague, it’s hard to escape its grip, but the Danube awaits. The river’s history unfolds along the way, with stops at medieval Regensburg ; the Benedictine Abbey of Melk, one of the largest monasteries in Europe; and Passau , which rises over the convergence of the Inn, Ilz, and Danube rivers.

The cruise culminates in Vienna – where you’ll sample the famous sachertorte and ink-black coffee – and Budapest.

Enjoy sausages and a beer (or five) at Historische Wurstkuchl, Germany’s oldest restaurant in Regensburg; an evening of opera in Vienna and crossing beneath the 1849 Chain Bridge in Budapest.

Avalon_Danube

Travel with: Avalon Waterways. Launched in 2003, Avalon Waterways has among the newest ships on Europe’s waters, with ample rooms with sliding glass doors, a sky deck with whirlpool, and stylish dining quarters.

Few sights accompany the morning coffee better than the sun rising over Noregian fjords. Greet the first light of day on the deck, as your ship glides around a bend and Norway’s cliffs come into focus, rising like skyscrapers over the waters.

Embark on a twelve-day trip from Bergen to Kirkenes , which includes Ålesund , with its Art Nouveau architecture, and Tromsø , the capital of the Arctic.

Norway, fjords

Travel with: Hurtigruten . On most other cruises, you’ll see the same passengers day in and out, but take the Hurtigruten ship and the faces change daily, since it also functions as a commuter route, with locals hopping on for short jaunts up and the down the coast.

And, don’t underestimate the allure of nostalgia: one of Hurtigruten’s most popular ships is the MS Lofoten – it launched in 1964, and little has changed since then. The ship celebrates the vintage era, with cargo loaded by traditional crane; gleaming wood and brass throughout, as well as oil paintings of coastal Norway; and sherry served on silver trays.

The Danube River is home to four national capitals: Belgrade, Bratislava, Budapest and Vienna. Most cruises split between the Upper and Lower Danube River, as the river has much to see.

Visit historic landmarks such as the villages in Normandy, the Château Gaillard castle and the medieval Rouen. Those interested in learning more about World War II can visit the Normandy beaches and American Cemetery and Memorial.

Those interested in visiting Eastern Europe will enjoy a river cruise on the Rhine. Explore the wonders of Germany, such as the Heidelberg Castle and the Black Forest. Europe is a continent built on its rivers, with many having played a vital role in the formation and development of its most important cities. From the Thames to the Tiber, they are a ever-flowing reminder of the continent’s long and varied history.

The opportunity to sail along these rivers, among the world’s most beautiful and peaceful waterways, is a temptation that’s easily given in to. Of course, a river cruise is about more than just spending time floating on the water (although that option is available, should you wish). It’s about the towns, cities and landmarks along the way.

These trips will take you on a relaxing and slow-paced journey to vineyards and valleys, tours and excursions, returning each night to your own floating hotel. Each day offers quick stops to discover some of the continent’s most important culture at your own pace.

The Independent has rounded up eight of the best Europe river cruise packages, from epic continental crossing and to the finest Christmas markets to explore.

Capitals of Eastern Europe, Viking River Cruises

The Danube runs through Budapest, Bratislava, Belgrade and Vienna

Viking River Cruises’ Capitals of Eastern Europe itinerary is a 16-night trip covering the main cities on the Danube. It sets sail from Vienna, the elegant and sophisticated Austrian capital, and it finishes in Constanta, Romania, before a quick final journey over land to Bucharest to end your trip with a two-night stay.

On the way you’ll visit a host of towns in Hungary, Serbia and even Bulgaria, but on this trip the bigger cities are the main attraction. Vienna is followed by Bratislava – where Baroque palaces meet a typically Eastern European Old Town – and then Budapest . The Hungarian capital is a highlight: from festooned “ruin bars” and thermal baths to a spectacular neo-Gothic parliament building, the city has a wide variety of architecture, activities and things to do.

How to book

The tour lasts for 17 days, starting from £3,795pp. This price includes return flights, one excursion in each port of call and all meals. vikingrivercruises.co.uk

North Rhine & The Netherlands, TUI

Boppard is one of the towns that Rhine river cruise ships stop at

Alongside the Danube, the Rhine is one of Europe’s main cruise rivers. Many operators have several Rhine packages; TUI’s offering covers a stellar range of cities for a very affordable price. It’s ships have two dining options (a bistro and a more formal restaurant) with al fresco seating, as well as a wellness and activity area on the top deck. No excursions are included, but this does give you free rein to choose whatever activities you like.

The first two days are spent in Amsterdam , where you’ll have ample time to wander its canals and green spaces, such as the Vondelpark, or visit attractions such as the Anne Frank museum, Van Gogh museum and Rijksmuseum.

Days three and four bring you to Rotterdam and Dusseldorf. You can enjoy the port area in Netherlands ’ second city or simply marvel at its dramatically different modern architecure, while Dusseldorf provides a variety of museums and concerts alongside a lively Old Town. On days five to seven, you’ll visit four picturesque riverside cities and towns: Bonn, Koblenz, Boppard and Oberwesel. There are waterfront bars and restaurants galore, and each has its own slice of history (think of a Beethoven museum in Bonn and a memorial to the ruler who united Germany in Koblenz).

From £1,219pp for this seven-night trip, including three meals per day (you can add coffees, alcohol and other drinks on an all-inclusive basis for an extra £20 per night) and return flights. tui.co.uk

The Douro, Riviera Travel

Porto sits on the banks of the Douro

A trip along the northern Douro river can offer views to rival even the most idyllic of Algarve beaches. This trip starts in Porto , where bars and restaurants line the banks in the Ribeira (Riverside) district, but it is worth climbing the various hills to see other areas and sites, such as the cathedral and Dom Luis I Bridge.

After setting off along the Douro, your first two stops are Pinhao – a picturesque wine town, famous for being at the heart of the Port-producing region of the country – and Castelo Rodrigo, a 12th-century walled village located in the highlands. After travelling to the capital by coach, you’ll visit the nearby towns of Coimbra (day eight) and Sintra (day 10), while you’ll have a day in the capital sandwiched in between; while in Lisbon, take in the city’s unique Manueline and Pombaline architecture while wandering through its grand squares, and visit Sao Jorge castle or the city’s famous Time Out Market.

Top 10 tips to book the best European river cruise

Top 10 tips for booking your best European river cruise

Plan a European river cruise and choose one of the best and most tranquil ways to see our continent’s beautiful landscapes and waterways!

Expectations are high, and there are numerous things to think about, plan, and pack to ensure a memorable river cruise vacation. Here are our top 10 tips for your best European river cruise. Our advice is an accumulation of our experiences and valuable information from past river cruise guests.

Quick navigation

What to expect on a European River Cruise

If you have been on an ocean cruise on a large cruise ship, expect a river cruise to be very different. Unlike oceangoing ships with as many as 6000+ passengers, most river cruise ships have around 200 guests on board.

First, it’s a fantastic way to see the heart of a country. You will have real-life experiences visiting small towns, villages, and sometimes big cities. You can meet the locals and immerse yourself in their culture. A river cruise is a very laid-back, calm, and social way to travel.

Due to the ships’ small size, river cruising is a more intimate experience than ocean cruising. You can be sure of meeting many people and making friends on board.

Most guests are older, often 60+, and there are noticeably fewer activities. Mostly you will find exercise classes, talks and presentations about the region you visit, and live music evenings, often by local visiting musicians.

As you can probably see from the prices, a river cruise is relatively expensive when you compare the average cost to an ocean cruise. Solo travelers, in particular, can find it quite expensive as you will most often be paying the total price to stay in a cabin designed for two adults.

Expect a high standard of food and drink on your cruise ship. Often sourced locally, the cuisine will reflect the region, and while menu choices are not wide, the meals are delicious. And there are always vegetarian alternatives.

Note that dinner on board is at a fixed time and is served at your table. There is no room service, buffet options, or specialty restaurants. In contrast to an ocean cruise, a river cruise is very structured, and you follow a schedule of meal times and entertainment on board.

It’s a hassle-free, reliable, and safe way to explore Europe.

Our best top 10 tips for a European river cruise

1. region and destination are key.

The region, destinations, and itineraries are the most important factors when choosing a European river cruise. The six most popular areas to choose from are :

Rhine – Europe’s second-longest river

As the second longest river in Europe, The Rhine offers spectacular scenery on one of the best European river cruises. Many, many destinations are UNESCO world heritage sites. Most often, river cruises start or end in Basel, Switzerland. Expect grand castles, vineyards, and quaint villages.

Danube – the romantic route

A cruise on the longest European river, the Danube, starts from various points, such as Passau, Vienna, and Budapest. Explore these cities before you start your Danube River cruise and experience the classic sights of medieval towns, elegant architecture, and beautiful landscapes.

Rhône – a journey through French wine country

If you are looking for a river cruise into French wine country, the Rhône region is for you. Stretching from the Swiss Alps and down through France to the Mediterranean Sea, your journey includes picturesque towns such as Avignon, Lyons, and Provence on one of the finest river cruises in Europe.

Choose your cruise by carefully looking at possible excursions to ensure you don’t miss out on as many breathtaking natural wonders as possible. We recommend you extend your vacation after your river cruise with a train journey through the Doux Valley.

Seine – showing the history and culture of France.

Winding through Paris, the Seine River starts in Dijon and ends in the English Channel. Expect an immersive experience in French art, history, and wine. We recommend a river cruise from Paris to Honfleur in northern France, where excursions to bucket-list destinations such as Versailles and the Normandy coast are possible.

Loire – the most beautiful valley in Europe

The romantic and picturesque Loire Valley is one of the most beautiful in Europe. It is the longest river in France and boasts cities such as Nantes, Amboise, and Le Puy on its banks. The Loire is a quieter, more shallow river with less visible commercialism.

Duoro – a scenic tour through Portugal and Spain

Starting in central Spain and flowing into northern Portugal, the mouth of the river Duoro is at  Porto . This cruise is a wine-lovers dream and a unique way to see the delights of small towns in Spain and Portugal.

2. Pick an itinerary with the most river cruise port stops

A river cruise will take you into the heart of the country. You’ll get a fascinating glimpse into the country’s culture, traditions, cuisine, and crafts. Choose a port-intensive itinerary to make the most of your European river cruise. That is, you stop in a new place every day.

This will ensure an exciting, destination-rich vacation. There is so much to do and see. You do not want to find that you are on board your river cruise ship for several days without stopping.

3. How to choose the right cruise company for your European river cruise

Choose the cruise line and ship that suits you best. We like to travel on newer ships where possible, and all our favorite river cruise companies have at least one new ship in their fleet.

Most river ships are similar in design. There is a main dining room, a large lounge, a bar area, and an open deck. And most cruise companies offer the same excursions at the same stops in your chosen region.

The decor onboard can vary. Some cruise ships favor the classic, glitzy style, others the more modern, minimalistic, Scandinavian style. Take Viking River Cruises, for example. Their ships have clean lines, with light wood and different texture in their styling – a trademark of their Nordic heritage.

But you should expect the same high level of service on whichever cruise you choose. One of our favorites is Uniworld boutique river cruises, which enjoy a reputation in the river cruise industry as a leader in the cruise market, offering luxury cruising across various itineraries.

Before you choose your cruise line based on price, check what’s included. On average, you will find that a cruise on a premium cruise line is around £400 (GBP) and $500 (USD) per person per day. But be sure to know what is included, as it varies depending on your chosen cruise line.

An excellent place to start is by comparing the cruise lines that offer the cruise region you are most interested in. You can do this easily using, for example, Cruise Direct. You can quickly get an overview of what’s available when you want to travel and at what price.

4. Make the most of your departure city and arrival a few days early

No matter what type of ocean cruise or river cruise you choose, always arrive a few days before you climb on board. That way, you avoid panic if your flight is suddenly delayed. We recommend at least 2 or 3 nights of hotel accommodation in your departure city.

It’s a great way to experience the city before you start your cruise. Take, for example, the city of Amsterdam . Many river cruises begin here, and what a remarkable city it is. Explore the City of Canals and the beautiful Dutch countryside.

Many cruise lines will offer a pre-cruise package. That means your transfer from the airport to your hotel, guided tours, excursions in the city, and a transfer from your hotel to the port is included. For example, Avalon Waterways has a great package consisting of a canal boat tour in Amsterdam and a day excursion to the windmills at Zaansche Molen.

5. Pack light and pack smart for European river cruises

Cabins on a river cruise ship are compact. You will have everything you need; however, space is limited. Try to avoid taking a multitude of oversized suitcases, as you will have trouble storing them. Opt instead for standard-size luggage and hand baggage .

The dress code on board is casual and relaxed. Even on more formal evenings, smart casual is popular. Pack lightly, with plenty of layers and a rain jacket, as European weather can be unpredictable. Comfortable, sturdy walking shoes or sneakers for shore excursions, a small backpack, and a refillable water bottle are good to have with you. Don’t forget to place any medicines in your hand baggage.

6. Expect the unexpected and be flexible

A river cruise is a luxurious and unique way to travel to inner Europe. But as with all travel, there is sometimes extreme weather or situations entirely out of our control. It can happen that in scorching seasons, water levels are low in parts of the river.

If this happens, you will be transferred onto tour buses to reach your next destination, where you will pick up the cruise ship again.

Many river cruises offer similar itineraries with the same stops. And that means that your ship could dock at the same time as others. Ships can sit right next to each other. You may find yourself walking over a connecting walkway and through another cruise ship to get to shore. Strange but true.

7. Activites and excursions

Many guests are surprised at the level of activity on a river cruise. While the experience on the cruise ship is very calm, excursions can be very active.

There are a lot of walking tours, which are not a great option if you have limited mobility, especially when many towns and villages have uneven paths, cobblestones, and sometimes steps to climb.

And while elevators are on board, the ships between the floors, corridors, and cabins are small. If you need an accessible cabin, check with the cruise line and, at the same time, ask if there are suitable excursions to join. In our experience, you must be relatively fit and active to make the most of a European river cruise.

8. Is All-Inclusive really what it says?

The beauty of a European river cruise is that you get an all-inclusive vacation. The only challenge is understanding what all-inclusive means. It can vary depending on the cruise company you choose to travel with.

For example, drinks included could be all types of beverages, including wine and beer, at any time of day at the bar and restaurant. However, it could also mean only those drinks served at meal times. It’s essential to check what you are paying for.

Generally, most river cruises include accommodation, all meals, free wifi, at least one excursion, gratuities, drinks with meals, and activities on board.

Optional extras include a beverage package that covers drinks from the bar, on-land excursions, pre-and post-cruise hotels, transfers, flights, or other train journeys. Anything more you want to tailor-make your river cruise vacation to suit you.

9. Pay attention to details in your river cruise documentation

Read all the emails and documentation the cruise line sends you before traveling.

Do not miss out on filling in all the necessary forms, ensuring you have all your travel documents, a valid passport, etc. Entry rules to different countries can change (for example, vaccination status), so read and re-read everything. Know how to check in online and what documentation you will need at the airport, your hotel, and finally, to get you on board your river cruise ship.

10. Meet the locals, try the local cuisine

While all your meals are provided on board the cruise ship, there is no nicer way to enjoy a new destination than visiting one of the local restaurants, bakeries, or cafes.

On a river cruise, you very often stop at a small town. Locals are friendly, so stop and chat and buy some souvenirs. It’s a great way to find out more about the local village.

Apt River Cruises

This travel company is owned and operated in Australia and is the country’s largest family-owned tour and cruise company. They provide a variety of vacation options. Their Concerto River Ships, AmaVenita, AmaStella, and AmaReina, offer luxurious accommodations and excursions while sailing on the Danube, Main, Rhine, and Douro Rivers, respectively.

Although Apt River Cruises charters the ships from AmaWaterways, the cruises’ itineraries, and onboard activities are completely distinct from those offered by AmaWaterways. The services provided by Apt include travel via rail and trips aboard a small boat, yacht, and ocean cruises.

Their “Magnificent Europe” cruise begins in Amsterdam with a tour of the canals and continues to the Rhine, Main, and Danube Rivers before arriving in Budapest after 15 days at sea. The cruise begins with docking in Koblenz, followed by a daytime cruise through the Rhine Gorge, and then arrival in Miltenberg for a guided tour of the city. On day six, guests can take a trip to Rothenburg or go to a farm owned by a family for homemade breakfast tea.

The ship navigates the Main Danube Canal, the waterway linking the Black and North Seas. Before departing for Budapest for two days, there is a cocktail party, private orchestra recital, or city tour in Vienna.

The 10 Best River Cruise Lines in 2022

The best river cruises blend refined onboard accommodations with exciting itineraries along some of the world’s most memorable waterways.

best europe river cruise route

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite river cruise lines.

After pandemic-related challenges at the beginning of last year, river ships got back to what they do best: exploring inland waterways in Europe, the United States, and select other destinations around the world. Travel + Leisure readers enthusiastically returned, setting out on voyages both classic and new.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated individual cruise ships on their cabins and facilities, food, service, itineraries and destinations, excursions and activities, and value. Those assessments were combined to generate results for the cruise lines in six categories, including river cruising.

The top three in the river cruise lines were very close in their scores. Viking, the world's largest river cruise company, moved up two spots into the lead position. Tauck, the well-known tour and river-ship operator, retained its No. 2 spot. "The itinerary was thoughtful as well as instructive," wrote one reader who traveled on the Joy . In the No. 3 spot is Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, with praise that included this rave from one voter who sailed on the Maria Theresa : "This was an exceptional cruise. The staff was excellent. I can't say enough about this cruise line and this ship."

Aqua Expeditions, with journeys on the Peruvian Amazon, ranked No. 4, thanks in part to the sophisticated onboard dining. "Its cuisine is rich in local products and designed by one of the most renowned chefs in Peru," noted one reader. Closer to home, No. 5 American Queen Voyages (formerly American Queen Steamboat Company) earned praise — especially from older adults — for its leisurely cruises on the Columbia, the Mississippi, the Ohio, and other U.S. waterways.

Top-ranked Viking does all the major riverways of Europe, with ships also on the Nile and the Mekong, and, new in 2022, on the Mississippi. Readers praised the line's value proposition and shore experiences that go beyond the norm. The "Thinking Man's vacation" is the way one reader who sailed on a Viking ship on the Rhine river put it.

Find the full list of the best river cruise lines — and more on what sets Viking apart — below.

With its fleet of more than 50 contemporary "longships" on rivers such as the Rhine, the Danube, and the Seine, plus additional ships in Europe, Egypt, and Vietnam, T+L's top-ranked river cruise line for 2022 is often praised for its steadiness. "Having traveled on seven Viking longships that are virtually indistinguishable from one another, I believe it's the consistency that makes Viking one of our favorite ways to travel," said one reader. The longships are light-filled floating boutique hotels with a Scandinavian-design aesthetic, indoor and outdoor dining, and herb gardens up on top. Viking's carefully crafted itineraries and "good value" also received praise from readers. "Met wonderful new friends. Absolutely outstanding service and terrific food," said one fan.

Choose Your Own Adventure On This European River Cruise

Thank you to AmaWaterways for hosting our cruise so we could provide this detailed review of our experience.

This AmaWaterways river cruise has become a popular way for active travelers to easily see multiple places, with daily excursions to cities, countrysides, and local landmarks.

We cycled into Melk, Austria, exhausted but deliriously happy, completing a 17-mile bike ride along the Danube River – passing by small medieval churches, castles, monasteries, gravesites, and fruit orchards. We whirred alongside vineyards, by corn fields, and through cobblestone villages, admiring perfectly arranged flower boxes in the stunning Wachau Valley, A UNESCO World Heritage Site and region known for its natural beauty. The ride felt like therapy as we were distracted in a good way after the recent passing of my father-in-law.

Our dream bike trip was one of the active excursions available on AmaWaterways, our “floating boutique hotel” that whisked us from Budapest to Vilshofen for 7+ nights and beyond the typical tourist paths to venture deeper into Old World villages along the Danube – the second largest river in Europe. The ship brought us through five countries and enchanting towns we could never imagine easily getting to like Bratislava, Slovakia; Austria’s Linz, Mondsee, and Salzburg (where the hills come alive with the Sound of Music); and the German villages of Passau and Vilshofen. The regal journey, including a small pool and walking track on the Sun Deck and rooms with French and outside balconies, had us cruising through the Austrian Lake District and the Strudengau Valley and since we were already deep in Europe, we easily extended our voyage with a half-day trip to the fairytale town of Cesky Krumlov, en route to Prague.

The beauty of these river cruises is not just the intimacy, with fewer than 150 people aboard our ship, but the ability to choose your own adventure. In each port, guests can decide on the level of activity they are comfortable with for the day – such as biking, hiking, or walking tours (at gentle, regular, and active paces). While “bike and barge” tours have been around for years, AmaWaterways was the first luxury river cruise line to include a fleet of new comfy 7-speed bikes and introduce a Wellness Program on its European cruises. Last year my mom and I cruised the Seine from Paris to Normandy with Viking , but bikes were not available.

As we glided along the Danube, we slipped into a new location each day where local guides greeted us for biking, hiking, and city walking tours (some with culinary components) to dive deeper into each landscape. While we were cycling through the Wachau Valley, friends we met onboard hiked in Durnstein to the Keunringer Castle, the famous ruins where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned. Other guests chose to invest their time touring the impressive Benedictine Abbey of Melk while others walked the town of Durnstein to sample apricots, sweets, and local wines.

Biking: Heighten your senses

The freedom of biking to explore new regions was exhilarating to us as we knew it wouldn’t be easy to replicate this experience on our own. We took advantage of the biking options and created a collection of unforgettable travel memories, choosing to cycle in three ports for around 15 miles at each destination. There were fewer than 10 bikers on each excursion, which made each cycling jaunt pleasurable.

In the Wachau Valley, we met several other passengers who were just as eager to view the Austrian countryside on two wheels. Our local guide made sure we didn’t get lost and also helped unveil the history and secrets of the journey with intriguing stops to take in the stunning viewpoints, learn historical information along the way, and point out natural features we might otherwise miss. Five to six-hundred-year-old villages that sprung up during the Middle Ages are still thriving along the Danube and feature unique points of interest – like a romantic little Gothic church from the 1500s, fortified with a tower since the town couldn’t afford a wall. We scaled the tower to admire the interior covered in a 3D mural due to a layered colored painting technique called ‘scrafitti’ where they scratch the layers away – similar to fresco paintings 500 years ago.

In each town, we noticed markings high on the walls where measurements are reminders of how the Danube can rise at an alarming rate – flooding twice in the last 13 years instead of the historical hundred-year event. Flood protection barriers have since been built in certain areas where metal sheets can be slid in to meet up to 25 feet of water.

Later that day we rested our weary bodies on our stateroom balcony – admiring the passing picturesque setting over local beer available on the ship as we snaked along the green Strudengau Valley. In Grein, the 500-year-old residential Greinburg Castle once owned by Queen Victoria of England (by way of her husband Albert) loomed above the town waiting for us to admire its lowkey grandeur and splendid courtyard. A private tour later wowed us with the castle’s diamond-cut ceiling in the music room and Sala Terrena (Stone Theater) crafted entirely out of pebbles from the Danube.

In Vienna, we opted to peddle through the buzzing city with a local guide who gave us a nice overview for afternoon and evening exploration on our own. We zipped along the riverside embankment by miles of graffiti art, with monumental buildings and soaring cathedrals leading us to the famous Ringstrasse, then on to admire architecture in Graben square and peruse Kohlmarkt with its luxury shops. The ride took us by hidden corners of Vienna, spiraling through one of the oldest amusement parks in the world with its popular Ferris wheel and into a city park to the golden statue of John Strauss II (“King of the Waltz”) playing his violin. In the city center, we came across a regal military procession with music in front of The Hofburg, the former 13th-century imperial palace of the Habsburg dynasty, and then stopped to witness Vienna’s town hall with its contentious balcony still in existence, where Adolf Hitler conducted one of his most infamous speeches.

In Passau, Germany, we felt motivated to bike again as this jaunt took us along the scenic shores of the Inn River through wooded hills and beaches of poplars, where we gaped at the cobblestone town’s pastel-hued Baroque buildings. A pedestrian bridge brought us across the river (and border) to Wernstein, Austria where we cycled along more woods, corn fields, churches, castles, and pubs, and observed village life before returning to the old town of Passau, known as the “City of Three Rivers” because the Danube, Inn and Liz rivers all converge here.

More biking excursions are available in many other river cruise destinations, such as Cologne’s Old Town, the medieval city of Rouen, St. Emilion’s wine estates, and the idyllic village of Kinderdijk in the Netherlands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its historic windmills. For even more active experiences, adventure travel leader Backroads partners with AmaWaterways to host intense biking tours for experienced cyclists.

Hiking: Get high for the best bird’s eye view

Opportunities abound for those who prefer hiking or want to mix up their exercise on a trip, as the beauty of Europe not only lies in its architecture and landmarks but also in its abundant nature. Most of the ports we visited included hiking to a hilltop castle and opportunities to go off the beaten path with hikes (and extended city walks) ranging from two to ten miles. In Budapest we scaled side streets to the Castle District, beginning with a walk along the Pest embankment to remember the Jewish lives lost at the Shoes Memorial before exploring the Matthias Church and fairy-tale-like Fisherman’s Bastion perched high on a hill above the Danube.

In Slovakia, a brisk hike to the Bratislava Castle was a warmup for a power walk to the towering UFO Building, up to the observation deck and restaurant to watch the sunset from soaring heights above a hanging bridge along the Danube. In Salzburg, we got high again atop Monchsberh hills above the roofs of the old town as the Salzburg Modern Art Museum has a scintillating restaurant perch to admire this Austrian city with its medieval and baroque buildings and eastern Alps.

Walking: Take it all in

Need an alternative to an aggressive day of exercise while on vacation? No problem, choose a walking experience at your preferred speed. We loved getting to know Bratislava with a walking beer food tour to sample various suds and regional treats (like cheeses, meats, and even tongue) at a local brewery. With a guide or on your own, walking the streets of a quaint medieval European town is a trip through a rich and storied past.

Activities: Golf, Pickleball, and Bespoke Wellness Programs

While you might think of a cruise as a crowded bonanza where the most common exercise is a walk to the nearest buffet, river cruises make it possible to keep your fitness goals going while on vacation. Our ship had a professional wellness coach who facilitated active excursions in port and daily fitness classes such as core strengthening, resistance band workouts, and sunrise stretching.

Some ships offer tailored wellness programs featuring yoga, Tai Chi, guided meditations, and an introduction to the traditional way to make organic teas for detoxifying, healing, and re-energizing. Others boast pickleball courts on the deck, juice bars, massage rooms, and beauty services like hair and nails. Some even offer concierge golf programs to experience prestigious courses in Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic.

Dining Options: Stay healthy or splurge

After an active day, it’s rewarding to indulge in sit-down meals in the waterside restaurant – created by expert chefs with daily elaborate multicourse menus featuring traditional and regionally inspired cuisine made with locally sourced fresh ingredients, including bread baked onboard overnight. Complementary wines selected from the surrounding areas are chosen by acclaimed European sommeliers and presented at each meal.

As a huge food fanatic, dining and discovering new dishes is an important part of my travels as in the past I have learned food can make or break a trip. AmaWaterways was the first river cruise to be inducted into the La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs and Tableset Auberges – two of the world’s most prestigious culinary organizations. Dishes were always presented so beautifully that it was shocking how artful the chefs could be in a tight galley. Each meal started with 4 mini appetizers and ended with dessert options – featuring ingredients and impressive options from the regions we were visiting.

Some of our favorite meals included a Bavarian carving station with pork knuckle and pork belly and gnocchi with wild mushrooms but we also appreciated veering off now and again from the region’s hearty dishes for fish and chips and a build-your-own Pho bowl. Also, guests are invited to a night at the Chef’s Table for a multicourse grand affair, and it is one we will never forget as we slipped by Budapest’s Parliament Building in all its glowing gold magic (pictured above). Vegetarians will be easily satisfied too as the daily menus include a special multicourse meat-free option along with menu items that can accommodate dietary restrictions and preferences like gluten-free or low-sodium.

On days we raced to morning biking excursions, I appreciated the grab-and-go breakfast options in the lounge as an alternative to the full-service restaurant while my husband loved the post-activity Sip & Sail daily cocktail hour with complimentary wine, beer, and spirits.

AmaWaterways far exceeded our travel exploration expectations. They make it easy to enjoy a healthy and vigorous lifestyle while on vacation and have now made river cruising our new favorite way to explore Europe.

See inside a new ultra-luxury river cruise line that's charging up to $59,520 per person

  • Newcomer Riverside Luxury Cruises wants to break into the growing river cruise market.
  • The ultra-luxury cruise line  operates former Crystal ships in popular European rivers like the Danube.
  • Riverside's 2024 cruises start at $1,055 per person for four days.

Insider Today

A new ultra-luxury cruise line wants to be the swankiest travel-by-river vacation option.

To do so, it's enticing cruisers with truffle-infused butter, $320-per-person dinners, and butlers that can be beckoned with a simple WhatsApp message.

Affluent travelers , meet Riverside Luxury Cruises.

The budding company first set sail in March 2023. With a year of service under its belt, its three ships are now sailing some of Europe's most popular rivers — starting at more than $260 per person per day.

Riverside is operated by Seaside Collection, a European hotelier.

best europe river cruise route

The firm had its sights set on a river cruise venture since 2018, Jen Halboth, CEO of Riverside Luxury Cruises, told Business Insider.

Ironically, COVID-19 was the reason it got into the business.

Crystal Cruises declared bankruptcy in early 2022 amid the pandemic. Shortly after, Seaside purchased and updated five of the then-defunct cruise line's ships.

Three of these vessels now make up Riverside's fleet. The other two are being leased to competitor Uniworld River Cruises.

River cruising has become increasingly popular as wealthy travelers gravitate to ultra-luxury small-ship vacations.

best europe river cruise route

River cruise ships are much smaller than their behemoth ocean-based counterparts, allowing Riverside to sail in waterways like Europe's Rhine, Rhone, Danube, Main, Moselle, and Saône rivers.

Along the way, guests can explore destinations many giant ships can't easily access — like Budapest, Hungary; Frankfurt, Germany; and Amsterdam — sometimes visiting more than one port in a day.

One of Riverside's shortest and cheapest 2024 voyages starts at $1,055 per person for a four-day Danube River cruise from Passau, Germany, to Vienna.

best europe river cruise route

Alcohol and excursion packages can tack on an extra $75 to $175 per person per night.

Looking to ball out? The most expensive and longest itinerary is $59,521 per person for a three-river, 22-day cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, Hungary, in the most expensive suite with the most inclusive package.

To compare, the cheapest 2024 voyage with all-inclusive luxury competitor Uniworld River Cruises starts at $2,000 per person for an eight-day Danube River sailing.

River cruisers tend to be over the age of 55.

best europe river cruise route

But the new company is targeting guests 45 years old and older, specifically those who frequent luxury vacations but have yet to try a river cruise.

"New luxury travelers want to be pampered, get off and have an adventure, and come back and be taken care of," the cruise line's CEO said.

"Pampering” they will get.

best europe river cruise route

Of Riverside's three ships, the 394-foot-long, 74-foot-wide Mozart can accommodate the most guests — up to 162, not including the 82 crew.

Yes, it's larger than Uniworld's ships, which range from 32 to 159 guests. But it's also significantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's new 9,950-person Icon of the Seas ocean vessel.

Like most cruise liners, Riverside's three ships have spas, buffets, and plush lounges and bars.

best europe river cruise route

During the day, travelers can enjoy lunch at the open-air grill and relax to live music courtesy of Steinway and Bösendorfer pianos, no less.

At night, they can dine on a seven-course meal at the 295 euros ($320) per-person Vintage Room.

Riverside’s ships have up to 5 restaurants. Vintage Room is the only specialty option.

best europe river cruise route

The cost to dine includes a wine pairing and plates like veal with truffle and chanterelle mushrooms and "surf and turf" with beef sirloin and scallops.

But don't expect a lackluster, rushed meal at the other complimentary options: "This is not a churn-and-burn," the company's CEO said of the ships' Waterside restaurants. "You come in for fine dining."

Infused, whipped butter is apparently one of Riverside's hottest commodities.

best europe river cruise route

Sometimes, it has chiles. Other times, it's infused with citrus. If you're lucky, you'll get one with truffles.

"People were raving about our butter," Halboth said. "Everyone's waiting to see what butter they'll get at dinner each night."

Need to sleep off all that dairy? You're in luck. Every cabin has a king bed.

best europe river cruise route

Riverside's suites range from 194 to 883 square-feet. These high-end cabins include butler service, stocked mini-bars, and espresso machines.

Some suites also have double-sink vanities and walk-in closets, a hallmark of an ultra-luxury cruise vessel .

Does Riverside’s more than $260 per person, per day fare seem reasonable now?

best europe river cruise route

If yes, book soon. It'll only get more expensive from here.

These fares don't offset the amount Riverside is spending on amenities like the upscale food, according to Halboth. To make up for these expenditures, the cruise line plans to raise its prices gradually over the next two years.

The company's CEO said bookings have been 'a little lighter' since the start of 2024.

best europe river cruise route

But the back half of the year is "filling up" thanks to Americans: About 70 to 80% of its guests are from North America, the company said.

Riverside will operate its Mozart, Ravel, and Debussy ships for three years as it 'hones the brand,' Halboth said.

best europe river cruise route

The cruise line's two additional vessels would join its fleet in the next few years.

Given the growing popularity of river cruises , it's a good time for companies like Riverside to start expanding.

However, it could face plenty of incoming competition.

Jamie Loizou, the UK managing director of luxury river cruise line AmaWaterways, is forecasting 2024 as a "pivotal" year for the river cruise industry, noting that 15 new river-based vessels are expected to launch this year, Cruise Critic reported .

Monthly cargo handled by the Port of Baltimore

The Baltimore bridge disaster on Tuesday upended operations at one of the nation’s busiest ports, with disruptions likely to be felt for weeks by companies shipping goods in and out of the country — and possibly by consumers as well.

The upheaval will be especially notable for auto makers and coal producers for whom Baltimore has become one of the most vital shipping destinations in the United States.

As officials began to investigate why a nearly 1,000-foot cargo ship ran into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the middle of the night, companies that transport goods to suppliers and stores scrambled to get trucks to the other East Coast ports receiving goods diverted from Baltimore. Ships sat idle elsewhere, unsure where and when to dock.

“It’s going to cause a lot of chaos,” said Paul Brashier, vice president for drayage and intermodal at ITS Logistics.

The closure of the Port of Baltimore is the latest hit to global supply chains, which have been strained by monthslong crises at the Panama Canal, which has had to slash traffic because of low water levels; and the Suez Canal, which shipping companies are avoiding because of attacks by the Houthis on vessels in the Red Sea.

The auto industry now faces new supply headaches.

Last year, 570,000 vehicles were imported through Baltimore, according to Sina Golara, an assistant professor of supply chain management at Georgia State University. “That’s a huge amount,” he said, equivalent to nearly a quarter of the current inventory of new cars in the United States.

The Baltimore port handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year, and it was the 17th biggest port in the nation overall in 2021, ranked by total tons, according to Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

Baltimore Ranks in the Top 20 U.S. Ports

Total trade in 2021 in millions of tons

Baltimore ranks first in the United States for the volume of automobiles and light trucks it handles, and for vessels that carry wheeled cargo, including farm and construction machinery, according to a statement by Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland last month.

The incident is another stark reminder of the vulnerability of the supply chains that transport consumer products and commodities around the world.

The extent of the disruption depends on how long it takes to reopen shipping channels into the port of Baltimore. Experts estimate it could take several weeks.

Baltimore is not a leading port for container ships, and other ports can likely absorb traffic that was headed to Baltimore, industry officials said.

Stephen Edwards, the chief executive of the Port of Virginia, said it was expecting a vessel on Tuesday that was previously bound for Baltimore, and that others would soon follow. “Between New York and Virginia, we have sufficient capacity to handle all this cargo,” Mr. Edwards said, referring to container ships.

“Shipping companies are very agile,” said Jean-Paul Rodrigue, a professor in the department of maritime business administration at Texas A&M University-Galveston. “In two to three days, it will be rerouted.”

But other types of cargo could remain snarled.

Alexis Ellender, a global analyst at Kpler, a commodities analytics firm, said he expected the port closure to cause significant disruption of U.S. exports of coal. Last year, about 23 million metric tons of coal exports were shipped from the port of Baltimore, about a quarter of all seaborne U.S. coal shipments. About 12 vessel had been expected to leave the port of Baltimore in the next week or so carrying coal, according to Kpler.

He noted that it would not make a huge dent on the global market, but he added that “the impact is significant for the U.S. in terms of loss of export capacity.”

“You may see coal cargoes coming from the mines being rerouted to other ports instead,” he said, with a port in Norfolk, Va., the most likely.

If auto imports are reduced by Baltimore’s closure, inventories could run low, particularly for models that are in high demand.

“We are initiating discussions with our various transportation providers on contingency plans to ensure an uninterrupted flow of vehicles to our customers and will continue to carefully monitor this situation,” Stellantis, which owns Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram, said in a statement.

Other ports have the capacity to import cars, but there may not be enough car transporters at those ports to handle the new traffic.

“You have to make sure the capacity exists all the way in the supply chain — all the way to the dealership,” said Mr. Golara, the Georgia State professor.

A looming battle is insurance payouts, once legal liability is determined. The size of the payout from the insurer is likely to be significant and will depend on factors including the value of the bridge, the scale of loss of life compensation owed to families of people who died, the damage to the vessel and disruption to the port.

The ship’s insurer, Britannia P&I Club, part of a global group of insurers, said in a statement that it was “working closely with the ship manager and relevant authorities to establish the facts and to help ensure that this situation is dealt with quickly and professionally.”

The port has also increasingly catered to large container ships like the Dali, the 948-foot-long cargo vessel carrying goods for the shipping giant Maersk that hit a pillar of the bridge around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The Dali had spent two days in Baltimore’s port before setting off toward the 1.6-mile Francis Scott Key Bridge.

State-owned terminals, managed by the Maryland Port Administration, and privately owned terminals in Baltimore transported a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo in 2023, worth $80 billion.

Materials transported in large volumes through the city’s port include coal, coffee and sugar. It was the ninth-busiest port in the nation last year for receiving foreign cargo, in terms of volume and value.

The bridge’s collapse will also disrupt cruises traveling in and out of Baltimore. Norwegian Cruise Line last year began a new fall and winter schedule calling at the Port of Baltimore.

An earlier version of this article misstated the Port of Baltimore’s rank among U.S. ports. It was the nation’s 17th biggest port by total tons in 2021, not the 20th largest.

What’s it like to dine on Tampa’s new riverboat cruise Craft? We took a ride.

  • Helen Freund Times staff

TAMPA — We almost didn’t make the boat.

Traffic snarled through downtown Tampa and stretched onto the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway, delaying what would have been a 45-minute drive from St. Petersburg to nearly an hour and a half in stop-and-go congestion.

We had reservations for Craft, Tampa’s brand-new riverboat dinner cruise set to depart at 7:30 p.m. — and a friendly confirmation email reminding us that our purchase was nonrefundable. We’d been encouraged to arrive 45 minutes early, when we would have presumably been able to commence a leisurely boarding, river breeze in our hair, Champagne flute in hand.

Life had other plans. At 7:25 p.m., my dinner date and I swung our car into the Garrison Street parking lot, narrowly avoiding getting struck by an oncoming streetcar.

Following a quick security wand-down (the boat adheres to U.S. Coast Guard rules) and a $30 event-fueled parking fee (Tim McGraw was playing a show at nearby Amalie Arena), crew members greeted us with a quick photograph and a glass of bubbly before sending us on our way.

“Welcome to our maiden voyage!” they exclaimed as we rushed aboard.

Shortly after 7:30 p.m., we were off, out of the Ybor Turning Basin and into the sunset.

Described as a “culinary and cocktail river journey,” Craft debuted its inaugural dinner cruise on March 15. The multimillion-dollar project is the latest endeavor from Jill and Troy Manthey, who also run several other entertainment-on-the-water concepts, including Yacht StarShip, Pirate Water Taxi and the Bay Rocket.

Designed with European riverboats in mind, the 130-foot-long vessel boasts a sleek, white silhouette with less than 11 feet of vertical clearance — meaning it can comfortably drift beneath many of Tampa’s low-lying bridges. But this ship’s real appeal lies in the coupling of an elevated culinary program, contemporary aesthetic and craft cocktails.

A trip aboard Craft includes a two-hour cruise up and down the Hillsborough River and a three-course prix-fixe meal. To start, there are lunch, brunch and dinner trips on deck, but a happy hour option may soon be in the works.

Running any kind of marine operation comes with steep operating costs — including fuel, dock rental fees and staffing — and the experience here is priced accordingly. But it still comes with a good deal of sticker shock. For two people on a Friday evening, we paid $392.59 for the boat ride and the three-course dinner — not including gratuity or drinks.

I love a fancy boat ride as much as the next person, but the pricing gave me pause.

Would the experience be worth it?

Things were a lot smoother once we got on board.

We entered through the front of the boat, or bow, and were shown to our seats inside a narrow dining room, flanked by windows overlooking the water. Wood paneling combined with slight nautical touches lent the space a warm, industrial-chic vibe.

Servers clad in white collared shirts and gray aprons whisked back and forth between the tables, balancing martini coupes and taking orders. In an attempt to let the crew develop their sea legs, the boat wasn’t fully booked that evening, but the dining room still felt abuzz with excitement and curiosity.

Clutching our Champagne, we glided through Sparkman Channel at dusk, glitzy Harbour Island homes glowing in the evening light as a Maggie Rogers track played softly in the background. We let out a collective exhale as the chaos of the day faded away.

Over the course of the roughly two-hour cruise, the boat steered up the Hillsborough River, passing Riverwalk landmarks including the Tampa Convention Center, Armature Works and Rick’s on the River, before turning around and heading back.

Guests were encouraged to explore the boat. The Bow and Stern bar, beautifully designed and fashioned out of a vintage 1914 cruiser, provided additional seating in the rear for those looking for more of an al fresco experience.

Throughout the evening, the crew moved back and forth between the dining room, the bar and the kitchen, sometimes stepping out on the deck to alert passengers when their meals had been delivered. Guests roamed the boat taking photographs, while patrons inside chatted up their neighbors, much of the voyage illuminated by the lights of downtown Tampa.

Craft’s strongest selling point is its culinary program, and the menu here is a far cry from the goblets of white wine and dry chicken associated with most dinner cruises.

Designed by chef Allison Beasman (formerly of Edison: Food + Drink Lab), the list of contemporary New American dishes runs the gamut from a black grouper served with Little Neck clams and Pernod cream to a Wagyu coulotte with kabocha caramel and a Korean barbecue octopus. As part of the prix-fixe deal, guests are able to pick an appetizer, entree and dessert from a menu of roughly 13 different dishes.

Part of what makes the vessel stand out is the addition of an open kitchen with gas stoves, and the concept’s design allows guests to get a peek of the action if they’re on their way to the bathroom or the bar.

When it came time to order dinner, our server patiently guided us through the menu, pointing out the additional dishes we could choose if we wished to add a little something extra onto our prepaid meal. We opted for the olive oil-marinated sheep and goat’s milk cheese ($18), which was just as tasty as our server touted. It arrived in a rich red pepper-packed pisto, drizzled with a healthy glug of olive oil and served with crusty bread for dipping.

Dishes are made to order and don’t necessarily arrive at the same time as other passengers’ meals. Our appetizers showed up roughly 45 minutes into the trip, a delightful baby kale salad lightly dressed in a white balsamic vinaigrette that was toothsome with chicory and shaved carrots and plumped up with fried baby potatoes and a healthy shaving of ricotta salata. Also good was the hearty tomato bisque with roasted bone marrow and blackened cipollini onions.

For our entrees, a seared duck breast arrived fanned out over silky whipped potatoes and a creamy goat cheese fondue, framed by Brussels sprouts and fat wedges of roasted golden beets. Though the duck was cooked a little past the requested temperature, it was still delicious. A plate of sweet and sour braised short ribs packed powerhouse flavors that paired beautifully together, all served over a sweet and sticky coconut rice sidling bok choy and juicy tangerine segments.

For dessert, we paired a perfect few scoops of pistachio ice cream with a chocolate espresso dacquoise, an intensely rich and sweet layer cake featuring a tart blackberry curd and creamy dark chocolate ganache.

The fine print

The water was calm that night and the entire service appeared well-rehearsed — absent of any major hiccups and even graceful at moments. As far as I could tell, there were no seasick passengers or man-overboard scenarios, which felt like some kind of success, though I did wonder what type of balance or physical dexterity would be required to maneuver trays of wobbling martini glasses over stormier seas.

Though tiered pricing exists for Craft — for different seats, times of day or days of the week — there’s no overlooking that a trip aboard the vessel isn’t cheap.

With neither drinks nor gratuity included in the booking price, if you’re looking to enjoy the evening with a couple of libations, it’s going to cost you. The add-ons can feel excessive, from a $50 king crab leg tray to the preboarding photograph crew members try to sell you at the end of the night. A suggested gratuity is presented on your bill, based on the total sales tallied for the table that evening, including the cost of the original reservation.

Some changes are bound to be expected as the company assesses guest interest and feedback. Even after the first week, it appears some prices have been slightly adjusted. Dinner for two people seated in the dining room with window seats now comes to $369.89 after taxes and marine fees, while weekend brunches for the same seats start at $89.95 per person.

It’s hard to imagine making dining here a regular occurrence, but for a special occasion, an evening aboard Craft can be a real delight.

Next time, though, I’ll remember to leave myself plenty of time to get there.
