Spanning three rivers and all five boroughs, you’ll even pass within touching distance of Lady Liberty herself. In other words, get your camera ready!

Sip complimentary beer, wine, or champagne from the bar while you learn about infrastructure, parks, and architecture.

Staten Island Ferry

9.  Staten Island Ferry

Put your purse away, because the Staten Island Ferry is totally free. That's right, in one of the most expensive cities in the world, you can find a free ride. This old chugger has been going since before any bridges were built, transporting folks from the 'burbs to Manhattan in 25 minutes. It still functions as a commuter necessity, but more and more sightseers are taking it to get the stunning panoramas of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. Boats leave South Ferry at Battery Park and run 24 hours a day.

Adrenaline junkies will want to book tickets for this supercharged half-hour ride through New York Harbor. 5 Great New York City Boat Tours for Tourists

boat cruise around manhattan

Sail ho and test your sea legs by taking a boat or ferry trip around New York City. It's impossible to explore the whole city on foot, and using the subway means missing out on all of the impressive views while in transit.

Sightseeing from the water offers a totally different perspective of this colossal city, and visitors have countless cruise options available that are family-friendly, budget-friendly, or booze-friendly. Once you're up close to the Statue of Liberty or sailing directly underneath the Brooklyn Bridge, you'll see there's really no other way to experience these New York landmarks.

The BEAST Speedboat

Philippe Debled / Getty Images

This high-speed boat whips travelers around the lower Hudson River and New York Harbor at 45 mph, right past top harbor sights like the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island . This "roller coaster on the water" is not for the faint of heart, but offers an exhilarating way for thrill-seekers to see the city. You are likely to get wet on the Beast, so don't forget a change of clothes if you plan to continue sightseeing after the cruise.

The Beast runs from early May until the end of September and doesn't go out during rain.

Board the boat: Pier 83 near West 42nd Street and Hudson River Park

Classic Harbor Line

Fancy sailing in the harbor with billowing white sails overhead? Then look no further than the exemplary Classic Harbor Line, which takes guests out on working schooners to enjoy views of Lady Liberty and the New York City skyline. Included in the rates are a few rounds of wine, beer, or soft drinks, for added value to this relaxing and memorable boat outing.

You can choose your cruise based on an activity or special event, such as fall foliage viewing, champagne sunset cruise, New Year's Eve fireworks, or Pride, among many others.

You can book these cruises year-round, seven days a week, except from January to mid-March, when they are only available on weekends.

Board the boat: Chelsea Piers at West 21st Street and Hudson River Park; North Cove Marina in Battery Park

Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises

The company offers several different sightseeing cruises around the city, including the popular 90-minute landmarks cruise, which provides views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, and other well-known sites. You can also schedule an enchanting sunset Circle Line cruise for a relaxing end to a busy day of city sightseeing .

Circle Line offers trips every day of the year except December 25.

Board the boat: Pier 83 near West 42nd Street and Hudson River Park; Pier 11 at the South Street Seaport

Staten Island Ferry

This free ferry ride to Staten Island takes only 25 minutes and offers stunning views of the Lower Manhattan skyline and New York Harbor, as well as the Statue of Liberty. You can ride the ferry directly back to Manhattan or disembark on the other side and explore what Staten Island has to offer.

The Staten Island ferry runs 24/7 with more frequent service during weekday rush hour. Be aware of scammers around the terminal trying to sell tickets for the ferry.

Board the boat: Whitehall Terminal, 4 Whitehall St.

New York Water Taxi

 JANIFEST / Getty Images

New York Water Taxi is the maritime version of the hop-on, hop-off bus. Purchase a one-day or two-day pass, and you can board the boat as often as you wish at any one of the four docking locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The year-round New York Water Taxi is the only cruise that allows visitors to explore New York via land and water, and even offers neighborhood guides for all of the areas around its docks.

Board the boat: Hudson River at West 42nd Street; Battery Park; Pier 11 at the South Street Seaport; and Pier 1 at Brooklyn Bridge Park

The 11 Best Cruise Lines for Adults

By Janice Wald Henderson

These Are the Best Cruise Lines for Adults in 2024

The world's best cruise lines for adults have one major perk in common: the child-free utopia passengers are afforded while sailing. Daydreaming on deck , leisurely romantic dinners, dancing into the wee hours, popping champagne, and even getting tatted—such unabashed joys have everything to do with being grownup and nothing to do with kids.

The best adult cruises allow passengers to pursue relaxation, rejuvenation, and indulgence, undisturbed by tantrum-minded toddlers and other children potentially ruining your me-time groove. For when it's time to sail away from the stresses of life on land, we've pulled together the very best cruise lines for adults, plus their most exciting itineraries available for booking in 2024 and early 2025.

Note that while some of these lines are strictly adults-only, others are adults-oriented, meaning that they may have some well-behaved older children on board during school holidays but otherwise, rarely do. Most are small ship experiences with geared-to-grownup itineraries spanning the globe and leaning into all-inclusiveness and luxury—all the better to admire when it’s all about you.

Breaking news, these are the most loved — and most hated — slang words in nyc.

New York City is the trendsetter for food, fashion and slang words — but sometimes the choices are so cringe .

A new survey  conducted by Wordtips  revealed the most loved and hated slang words in NYC and 13 other areas with “distinct dialects,” including Hawaii, Philadelphia, Boston and New Jersey.

They relied on UrbanDictionary.com to evaluate the number of upvotes and downvotes for each word so they could calculate the percentage results, ultimately collecting 50 oft-used terms.

New york slang

The poll revealed people can’t get enough of the popular New York slang term “cringe,” which means “embarrassing or awkward,”  explained UrbanDictionary.com.

“Cringe” came out on top with 94.03% of upvotes from respondents.

The viral term is followed by “yerrr/yurrr,” which many people use as a greeting, though it can used as a shortened version of “What’s up?” However, when responding, it’s encouraged to say the phrase back louder to the person who initiated the greeting.

“Whip” is the third most-loved in conversation, with New Yorkers interchanging “whip” with with the word “car,” referring to their vehicle, such as, “I’m parking the whip.”

Next up is “dead ass,” which is something used when trying to emphasize their seriousness.

And although New York is known for its diverse food scene, whenever locals refer to a “snack,” it’s not about food. The slang word, rated NYC’s fourth most popular phrase, is often referred to as a sexy person looking just as good as something you can eat.

Woman sitting in park with dog

While New Yorkers appreciate being highly influential for slang terms across the country — 84.28% of survey respondents voted the region as one of the best for it — there are some words they would prefer people erase from their vocabulary.

They dead ass can’t stand people saying “brolic,” a Big Apple term to describe someone with a muscular shape. The phrase, which landed in the No. 1 spot as the most hated New York slang, can be associated with buff or swole and used in a sentence as, “Yo, son, he’s looking brolic!”

Other phrases locals can’t stand to hear include “yas/yaaas,” which is used to hype your friend up for something they did and ranked as the second most hated term, and “peep”, which is used when you notice something someone else may not have.

By the way, since we’re keeping it real, the common phrase “real talk” also is a major no-no in NYC, as is the third most-hated term “Gucci” when describing something as all good or cool.

While New York is often the birthplace for slang terms, the study said, it was Hawaii that actually ranked No. 1 for the most popular phrases.

The term “Hapa,” referring to a person of mixed race, received a 90.9% upvote rate across the board.
