Safari Download Manager on iOS, iPadOS

Let's continue the article by showing you how to set up Safari on iOS and iPadOS so you can make the most of the native Download Manager, which is another great video downloader iPhone app.

It's best to go through some basic setup steps with Safari's Download Manager to be able to get the most out of it.

Within Safari, the Downloads symbol appears next to the address bar in the top-right corner. However, unless a file is uploaded to the download queue, this icon is hidden by default.

Even if you've previously downloaded files, you may have noticed that the symbol disappears after some time.

There is a setting you must change if you need constant access to your download list items (Download History). The methods below will show you how to make the Downloads symbol always appear in Safari.

  • On your iPhone, open the Settings app.
  • Scroll down and select Safari from the drop-down menu.
  • Select Downloads from the "General" menu.
  • Select Manually from the Remove Download List Items menu.

You may also wish to modify the location of your downloads while you're here. Safari saves your downloads to the Downloads folder in iCloud Drive by default.

If you use Safari to download files regularly, you may be wasting space on iCloud, especially if you forget to clear temporary downloads. It is recommended that you modify your Downloads location outside of iCloud Drive to avoid this.

Set up Safaris Download Manager iPhone and iPad

To do so, (under the "General" section) open the Settings app and go to Safari > Downloads, then under the "Store Downloaded Files On" select the On My iPhone/iPad option section to save your downloads to your local Downloads folder.

You may also choose a custom place for your Downloads by going to "Other..." and selecting a relevant folder.

When you download a file in Safari after that, it will be saved to your device at the place you specify, and it will appear in Safari's Download List. The Downloads icon should remain visible next to the URL bar as long as you don't "Clear" the entire list.

To delete particular files from the Downloads list, open Safari, tap the Downloads icon, and instead of tapping "Clear," slide a specific item in the list from the right to show the Delete option, and then tap Delete.

The best streaming shows receive a lot of internet traffic but while some people watch videos online live, some prefer to download them to watch later. There are  repositories of free music out there but most people don’t know where to get them. As a result of the needs of these different kinds of people, we’ve listed below some of the best free video downloader apps for iPhone and iPad.

When you open a download link in Safari, you have two options.

  • A pop-up appears, giving you the option to "View" or "Download" the file, or both.
  • The link opens the material or media behind it in Safari.

In the first scenario, you can tap the Download button in the pop-up to begin the download.

In the second case, the sections following will show you how to obtain such files.

When you click on a download link, some files, including as PDFs and MP4s, may open straight in Safari instead of displaying the Download dialog. Follow these steps to download these files in Safari:

  • On the iPhone or iPad, open Safari and navigate to the web page with the download link.
  • The download link will open out and display more possibilities if you tap and hold it.
  • Scroll down the list of options until you find Download Linked File .

The file will be added to Safari's Downloads List (queue) and will begin to download.

If the "Download" pop-up doesn't appear when you tap and hold an embedded link in Safari, or if the "Download Linked File" option doesn't appear when you hit and hold a direct download link, here's what you can do.

  • For iPhone or iPad, open the link in Safari.
  • From the bottom of the screen, tap the Share icon.
  • Select Save to Files from the drop-down menu.
  • Choose a location for the file to be saved, then touch Save in the top right corner.
  • The file will be saved at the location you specify.

Safari will open the audio or video file in its built-in media player if the link is for an audio or video file. Tap the screen to show the player controls, then tap the 'X' to close the player. You should now be in the Safari window, with the media's URL displayed in the address bar. To get the file, go to Step #2 above.

You can use any suitable web media grabber, such as 9xBuddy, to parse the streaming URL and get the direct download link to the source video or audio file if you wish to download embedded films or audio via Safari.

As discussed in the previous sections, once you get the direct download link, you may download it in Safari just like any other file.

Resume Support: Other Features of Safari's Download Manager on iPhone and iPad: You can temporarily halt a download in Safari by tapping on the "X" next to the file, which switches to the "Resume" icon, if you browse the Downloads list (by clicking on the Download icon next to the URL bar) while downloading a file. By tapping on the "Resume" symbol, you can come back later and resume the download (if the server allows it). You may also check the status of current downloads in the Downloads list.

Background Downloads: You can switch to other apps and continue working while a download is in progress. The download should continue uninterrupted in the background. Background downloads in Safari on the iPhone and iPad, in comparison to third-party download managers, perform far more dependably in our experience.

As a result, Safari's built-in download manager for iOS and iPadOS can now handle and manage a variety of file downloads. However, if you want to look at additional third-party online downloader apps, the section below covers a number of them.

Best 3 iPad / iPhone Downloader Apps

Documents is one of the most popular file management apps for iOS, but it also works well as a file downloader, thanks to its native support for a wide range of file types for both viewing and downloading. You can organize, save, and browse your files without needing to export them to another program because it's a full-featured file management app.

Documents File Manager with Downloader

Additional capabilities of the Documents app include the ability to add different connections (WebDAV, SFTP, SMB, Dropbox, Google Drive, and so on), rename files, and set the download destination at the time of file download, among other things.

Documents is a 100% free app with no restrictions or advertisements. In our dedicated article, we go through the features of the multifunctional iOS file manager software.

Total Downloader is an iOS file and download manager that meets nearly all of the criteria for being a good download manager. It comes with a built-in browser that supports universal search and can download files in any format.

You can tap on a download link on a web page and pick whether to Download or Open (Navigate) it. Unlike many other downloader apps, which open the file immediately after hitting the download button, Total takes the logical approach of letting you pick what to do next.

The Downloads tab in the Transfers screen provides all active and inactive download tasks, along with the current download speed, size, and other information. You can Pause, Resume, or Cancel a particular download by tapping on it. Completed downloads display in the files tab, where you can play or view the file, or use the Open In option to export it to Photographs (for photos and videos only) or other apps.

Total's ability to gather embedded media URLs from specific streaming sites like Facebook, Vimeo, Instagram, and others is one of its most distinctive capabilities. However, it explicitly prohibits the grabbing feature from certain sites that primarily host original copyrighted content from artists/creators to avoid legal difficulties.

Total also offers some file management capabilities. It can open a variety of text, photo, music, video, document, and archive types, and it also integrates a number of cloud services, including Dropbox, OneDrive, and WebDAV. As a result, you may sync downloaded files directly with your choice cloud provider and even stream media files from the cloud.

Private browsing mode, bookmarks, and history management, user agent spoofing, PIN-protected files, and much more are some of the other significant features of Total.

Total's free version is ad-supported. With a $4.99 in-app purchase, you may remove advertisements and upgrade to the pro edition of the app.

The Files app (which is not to be confused with Apple's app of the same name) has a simple interface but is capable of handling any form of download link we throw at it. A web browser, a download manager, a section for downloaded files, and Settings are the four sections of the software.

The built-in web browser allows you to customize the default search engine, user agent (Mobile Safari or Firefox), and custom MIME types, which determine how the app handles various download links. You can use the browser's unified search bar to type a complete URL or a search query.

A Safari Bookmarklet is also accessible in Files, which allows you to move download links from the iOS Safari browser to the built-in Files browser, where you can download from the available links.

Even if a file type isn't supported for download, you can override the app's default behavior by adding it as a new MIME type. Alternatively, you can select Download Linked File As by tapping and holding the download link.

Note that if the download URL string is large, the tap & hold action options may not be fully visible, especially on small screens like the 4-inch iPhone. Instead, you must scroll through the list of possible options and choose your favourite option.

The Downloads tab displays all active downloads, as well as their speed and progress. You can either tap on the download and select Copy Address from the pop-up to acquire the source URL, or you can tap on the stop/resume button next to the download to control it.

With a built-in document viewer for PDF, DOC, XLS, PPT, TXT, HTML, and RTF file types, as well as the ability to extract ZIP and RAR archives, a photo viewer, and a media player, the app could also be used as a file manager.

The software has AirDrop/Share menu, iTunes File Sharing, FTP transfer, and other reasonable import and export options for transferring files with other apps and devices.

Files' free version allows you a restricted number of downloads and storage. You can remove the restriction by upgrading to the Pro version for $4.99 via in-app purchase.

Safari's Download Manager is the greatest overall experience when it comes to downloading files on your iPhone and iPad, especially with background downloads, because it is a native solution.

However, as previously mentioned, some third-party solutions have sophisticated capabilities such as automatic media grabbing, more protocol interfaces, improved download management choices, and so on.

Those have been plenty of options video downloader iPhone apps.

How-To Geek

How to download files using safari on your iphone or ipad.

Need to quickly download a file on your iPhone or iPad? Here's how you can do this using Safari or a third-party app.

Quick Links

How to download files using safari, how to the change default download location, alternative for ios 12 users: documents 5 by readdle.

In your work or personal life, you'll sometimes need to download a file on your iPhone or iPad. Using the new feature introduced in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, you can now do this directly in Safari. No third-party app needed!

Safari's download manager is a hidden new feature in the  iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 updates. If you're going about your day, browsing the web, you probably won't be aware of the feature. Instead, it comes up when you tap on a download link.

Go to a web page and find the link for a file you want to download. When you select it, you'll see a popup with the filename asking if you want to download it. Tap on the "Download" button.

The download will start, and you'll see a new "Downloads" button appear next to the address bar at the top of the browser. Tap on the button to reveal all current downloads. From here, you can monitor the progress of multiple downloads.

If you want to stop a download at any time, simply tap on the "X" button.

Once the download is finished, tap on the file to preview it. If you've downloaded a media file, image, or a PDF, you'll be able to see it in the preview window.

You can then share the file to any app. Tap on the "Share" button from the bottom-left corner.

Press the "Search" icon next to the filename in the Downloads section to open the file.

Once you open the file in the Files app, you can tap and hold on the file to reveal the menu.

From here, tap on "Delete" to delete the file.

By default, the downloaded files are saved to the Downloads folder in iCloud Drive in the Files app. This is a great option if you have a paid iCloud storage plan  because it allows your downloaded files to instantly sync across all your devices.

But if you're on the free, 5GB tier, you might not have space for storing large files.

Thankfully, you can change the default location to local storage. Open the "Settings" app and go to Safari > Downloads. If you can't find the browser on your phone, try using Apple's Spotlight search to locate it.

Here, switch the selection to "On My iPhone" or "On My iPad" depending on your device.

By default, Safari will pick the "Downloads" folder. You can change this by tapping on the "Other" option to select any folder from the local storage (or from a cloud storage option).

The new download manager in Safari is exclusive to iOS 13, iPadOS 13, and above. If you haven't updated to the latest OS (which you should), or if you're in a situation where you can't update, here's a workaround for you.

Try using the free Documents 5 app by Readdle . It's an all-in-one browser and file manager app.

Open the Documents 5 app and tap on the "Browser" button in the bottom-right corner to switch to the browser mode.

Now, navigate to the page with the download link and tap on it. From the next screen, select the folder where you want to download the file and tap on "Done."

The download will now start. You can tap on the "Downloads" tab to view all downloads.

Tap on the "Files" button from the bottom-left corner to switch to the file manager. From here, tap on the "Downloads" folder to see your downloaded file. You can tap on the download to preview it in the app. Tap on the "Menu" button to view options for opening the file in another app.

Best Download Manager Apps for iOS

When we first published this article, Safari on the iPhone and iPad lacked download management capabilities, and the only way to manage downloads was to use a third-party app for it.

But lately, Apple introduced native file management on the iPhone and iPad with the Files app in 2017. Two years later, Safari got its Download Manager, letting users store and manage downloads via the Files app on iPhone and iPad.

Over time, there have been improvements to the native download manager in Safari, which has made it one of the best download managers for the iPhone and iPad. But even so, there are a few things you need to set up to get the most out of Safari’s Download Manager.

This article will explore how to use Safari’s Download Manager to its full potential, as well as some third-party apps for download management on iPhone and iPad.

Note: The criteria for considering an app as a decent download manager for iOS still remains the same as before. The app should primarily be able to download all file types, display download speed, provide resume support for in-progress downloads, etc. It should also allow you to export the downloaded files to other apps, and provide basic support for opening common photo, audio, video & document formats.

Copy   Safari Download Manager on iOS, iPadOS

Here, we’ll guide you to set up Safari on iOS and iPadOS, to get the most out of its Download Manager.

Copy   Set up your Download Manager

To get the most out of Safari’s Download Manager, it’s preferable to go through some basic setup.

The Downloads icon appears in the top-right corner within Safari, next to the address bar. But this icon is hidden by default unless a file is added to the download queue.

Safari Download Manager on iOS, iPadOS

Now, you might have noticed that the icon automatically disappears after some time, even if you’ve downloaded files in the past.

If you need access to your download list items (Download History) at all times, there is an option you need to modify. The following steps will guide you to always show the Downloads icon in Safari.

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Scroll down and tap on Safari .
  • Under the “General” section, tap on Downloads .
  • Tap on Remove Download List Items , and select Manually .

While you’re here, you may also want to change the location for your downloads. By default, Safari saves your downloads in the Downloads folder within iCloud Drive.

If you frequently download files using Safari, that could consume unnecessary storage on iCloud, especially if you forget to delete temporary downloads. To avoid such a situation, it’s recommended that you change your Downloads location outside of iCloud Drive.

Set up Safari's Download Manager - iPhone and iPad

To do so, go to the Settings app, and navigate to Safari >> Downloads (under “General” section), and choose the On My iPhone/iPad option under the “Store Downloaded Files On” section, to save your downloads to the local Downloads folder. Alternatively, you may choose a custom location for your Downloads, by selecting “Other…” and choosing the appropriate folder.

Thereafter, when you download a file in Safari, it will be saved to your device in the selected location, and the same will be available in Safari’s Download List. And, as long as you don’t “Clear” the entire list, the Downloads icon should remain visible next to the address bar.

Note: To clear individual items from the Downloads list, go to Safari, tap on the Downloads icon, and instead of tapping on “Clear”, slide a specific item in the list from the right to reveal the Delete option, and then tap on Delete .

If you open a download link in Safari, there are two possible outcomes.

  • You get a pop-up with the options to either “View” or “Download” the file, or both.
  • The content or media behind the link directly opens in Safari.

Download files in Safari on iPhone, iPad

In the first scenario, you can tap on the Download button in the pop-up, which starts downloading the file.

In the second scenario, the below section(s) will guide you to download such files.

Copy   Download files instead of opening them in Safari

Download files instead of opening them in Safari

Some files, such as PDF, MP4, etc., may directly open in Safari when you click on a download link instead of showing the Download prompt. To download these files in Safari, do the following:

  • Open the web page containing the download link in Safari on the iPhone or iPad.
  • Tap and hold the download link to pop out and reveal additional options.
  • Scroll down through the associated options, and tap on Download Linked File .

The file will be added to the Downloads List (queue) in Safari and start downloading.

Copy   Download files when the “Download Linked File” option is not available

If opening a direct download link in Safari doesn’t provide the “Download” pop-up, or if the “Download Linked File” option doesn’t appear when you tap & hold an embedded link, here is what you can do to download these files using Safari.

Download files when the “Download Linked File” option is not available

  • Open the link in Safari for iPhone or iPad.
  • Tap on the Share icon from the bottom of the screen.
  • Scroll and select the Save to Files option.
  • Choose a preferred location to save the file, and tap on Save from the top right corner.

The file would be saved in the selected location.

Note: If the link is for an audio or video file, Safari will open it in its built-in media player. In this case, tap on the screen to reveal the player controls, and tap on the ‘X’ to close the player. Now you should be back in the Safari window, with the URL of the media available on the address bar. Proceed with Step #2 above to download the file.

Copy   Download Video from streaming sites in Safari on iPhone, iPad

If you want to download embedded videos or audio via Safari, you can use any suitable web media grabber, such as 9xBuddy , to parse the streaming link and get the direct download link to the source video or audio file.

Once you get the direct download link, you can download it in Safari just like any other file, as mentioned in the above sections. You may refer to this section of our dedicated article to learn how to do so.

Copy   Other Features of Safari’s Download Manager on iPhone and iPad

Resume Support: In Safari, if you access the Downloads list (by clicking on the Download icon next to the address bar) while downloading a file, you can pause a download temporarily by tapping on the “X” next to the file, and it changes to the “Resume” icon. You can come back later and resume the download again (if the server supports it) by tapping on the “Resume” icon. The Downloads list also allows you to view the progress of current downloads.

Background Downloads: Once a download starts, you may switch to other apps and continue working. The download should continue in the background without interruption. In our experience, background downloads in Safari on iPhone and iPad work much more reliably compared to background downloads on third-party download managers.

Hence, Safari’s built-in download manager on iOS and iPadOS is now powerful enough to handle and manage different types of file downloads. But if you still want to explore other third-party online downloader apps, the below section explores a few of them.

Copy   Third-party Download Manager apps for iPhone and iPad

Copy   documents – file manager with downloader.

Documents is one of the most popular file management apps on the iOS platform but also serves as a decent file downloader, especially because of its native support for a wide variety of file types both for viewing as well as for downloading. Being a full-fledged file management app, you can organize and store your files, and view them without having to export them to any other app.

Documents – File Manager with Downloader

Documents app provides additional features, including the option to add different connections (WebDAV, SFTP, SMB, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.), rename the file, and set the download location at the time of file download, etc.

Documents app  is completely free without any limitations or ads. You can learn more about the versatile iOS file manager app, in our dedicated article.

Copy   Total Downloader – Download Manager for iPhone, iPad

Total Downloader is a file and download manager for iOS that satisfies almost all of the criteria to be considered as a decent download manager. Its built-in browser supports universal search and can download any type of file format.

From a particular web page, you can tap on a download link, and choose between whether you want to Download or Open (Navigate) it. Unlike many other downloader apps which directly open the file on clicking on the download button, Total handles it smartly by letting you decide the subsequent action.

Total Downloader - iPhone Download Manager

The Downloads tab in the Transfers screen lists all the active and inactive download tasks, which includes the current speed of the download, size of the download, and other details. Tapping on a particular download will allow you to Pause, Resume or Cancel the download. Completed downloads appear in the files tab, from where you can play or open the file, or export it to Photos (for photos and videos only) or other apps using the Open In option.

One of the most unique features of Total is its ability to grab embedded media links from specific streaming sites, like Facebook, Vimeo, Instagram, etc. But to avoid legal issues, it explicitly disables the grabbing functionality from certain sites that primarily host original copyrighted content from artists/creators.

Total also has certain features of a file manager app. It supports the opening of common text, photo, audio, video, documents, and archive formats, also integrating a bunch of cloud services, including Dropbox Google Drive, OneDrive, and WebDAV services. Thus, you can directly sync the downloaded files with your preferred cloud service, and even stream media files from the cloud.

Some of the other notable features of Total include private browsing mode, bookmarks, and history management, user agent spoofing, PIN-protected folders, and much more.

The free version of Total is ad-supported. You can remove ads and upgrade to the pro version of the app with an in-app purchase of $4.99.

Copy   Files – Download Manager for iOS

Files app (not to be confused with Apple’s app of the same name) is quite simple in its look and feel, yet powerful to handle any type of download link we throw at it. The app has four sections, a web browser, a download manager, a section for the downloaded files, and Settings. The built-in web browser provides specific settings for the default search engine, user agent (Mobile Safari or Firefox), and custom MIME types that define how the app handles different types of download links. You can either type a complete URL or use a search phrase on the browser’s unified search bar.

Files - Download Manager App for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch

Files also have a Safari Bookmarklet, which allows you to transfer download links from the iOS Safari browser to the Files’ built-in browser, where you can download from the available links. Even if a particular file type is not supported for download, you can manually define how the app handles it, by adding it as a new MIME type. Alternatively, you can tap & hold the download link and select Download Linked File As option.

Note: If the download URL string is long, the action choices for tap & hold may not be visible fully, especially on small screen devices, such as the 4-inch iPhone. You need to scroll through the list of available options and select the preferred one instead. The Downloads tab shows all the active downloads, along with their download speed and progress. You can tap on the download and select Copy Address from the pop-up to get its source URL or tap on the stop/resume button next to the download to control the operation as preferred.

The app could also serve as a file manager, with a built-in document viewer for PDF, DOC, XLS, PPT, TXT, HTML, and RTF file formats, ability to extract ZIP and RAR archives, photo viewer, and media player.

The app provides decent import and export options for exchanging files with other apps, and also with other devices, including AirDrop/Share menu, iTunes File Sharing, FTP transfer, etc.

The free version of Files provides for limited downloads and storage. To remove the limitation, you can upgrade to the Pro version via in-app purchase, for $4.99.

Being a native solution, Safari’s Download Manager provides the best overall experience when it comes to downloading files on your iPhone and iPad, especially with background downloads.

But as described above, a few of the third-party solutions offer some advanced features, such as automatic media grabbing, additional protocol integrations, better download management options, etc.

How to manage downloads in Safari on iPad

Manage your downloads in Safari like a pro. Here's how to get those downloads organized.

Safari on iPad

How to download a file in Safari

How to manage your downloads, how to view your downloaded files on ipad.

In the most recent versions of iPadOS, Apple is finally bringing desktop capabilities to Safari on the iPad. This is possible in part because the iPad is finally separating itself from the iPhone, and iPadOS brings about a ton of new functionalities, especially with Safari. One of the biggest new features in Safari is the ability to download and manage files from webpages.

Since Safari now has a desktop-class browsing experience on the iPad , it's actually possible to download files directly on your iPad. Whether it's zip folders, documents, videos, music, software restore files, or whatever suits your fancy, you can do it right on your iPad.

  • Launch Safari on your iPad.
  • Navigate to any webpage that contains the file you want to download.
  • Tap on the link to the file that you want to download. If the website has the Download option hidden under a menu, just tap on it until you find the download link .
  • Confirm whether you want to download the file by tapping on Download .
  • If you change your mind about the download, just tap on the "X" . Your download will begin downloading immediately if you chose to download it.

Like on the desktop, you can view and manage your current downloads right in Safari.

  • Tap on the Downloads button in the toolbar (it's the arrow pointing down inside a circle). This reveals a popover menu with your current downloads.
  • If a file is still downloading but you want to cancel it, just tap on the "X" .
  • If you want to resume the download, tap on the Resume button (looks like the refresh icon in Safari).
  • To view your file, tap on the magnifying glass to open up your Downloads folder in iCloud Drive.
  • This gets rid of any unfinished downloads as well, so be careful.
  • Any completed downloads will still remain in your Downloads folder in iCloud Drive.

After you download a file from Safari, you can quickly jump to it from the download manager by tapping on that magnifying glass icon. But if you want to view them manually after clearing out the list, you can do that too.

  • Launch Files on your iPad.
  • Tap on Browse .
  • Make sure to select iCloud Drive from the Locations side panel.
  • Locate the Downloads folder and tap it.
  • Tap on a file to view it.
  • If you want to share the file, tap on the Share button in the top right corner to bring up the Share Sheet .

Download like a pro

With this type of functionality, the best iPad feels ever more like a cross between a computer and a smartphone. This ability to download and manage files is quite MacBookish, but in its own iPad way. Once you have this mastered, you can manage downloads in Safari and keep them organized for a more streamlined experience.

How to fix Safari not downloading files on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

You may, at times, encounter an issue where Safari refuses to download photos, videos, audio, PDFs, documents, and other files from a website. In this article, we’ll explore common reasons why Safari may not be downloading files on iPhone, iPad, or Mac and provide solutions to help you get back to downloading with ease.

List of Safari downloads on iPhone

The issues you may be facing

  • Clicking the download link opens a new blank tab, and no file download starts.
  • Safari is refusing to begin file downloads from one or all sites.
  • File download starts, but it fails immediately in a second or two.
  • The download happens up to a point and then fails midway or just before completing.
  • Safari downloads a file but opens it and then deletes the original files (this happens with ZIP and other compressed files).

The solutions below should help fix all the above issues and also ones similar to them.

Before you begin

It’s possible that you’re not following the right steps to download the file. On Mac, it’s super easy, but on iPhone and iPad, downloading files may not be as obvious. With that said, even if the file has been downloaded, you may not know where it’s saved and how to find it. So, look at these tutorials, if needed:

  • How to download videos from Safari on iPhone and iPad
  • How to download files and documents to iPhone or iPad
  • How to access downloaded files on iPhone and iPad

Retry the download

In many cases, initiating the download again does the trick. Try hitting the download link again, and it should work. If not, refresh the webpage and click the download button again.

Note: Some websites put downloads behind a login wall. So, make sure to honor that.

Pause and resume the download

The download may look like it has started, but it will pause or fail in a few seconds. If that happens, hit the tiny retry button a few times, and it should start the download. If not, hit the download link again on the website.

Check your internet

Make sure your iPhone, iPad, or Mac is connected to a stable Wi-Fi, Cellular Data, or Ethernet connection and the internet is working properly.

Some useful tips

  • Turn off VPN if you’re using one.
  • Restart your Wi-Fi router.

Troubleshooting internet problems

  • Internet not working on your Mac? Here are 16 solutions to fix it

Allow the website to download files

When you try to download a file from a website for the first time, it doesn’t start immediately. Instead, you will see an alert asking your permission to allow this site to download and save files locally or not. Make sure you allow that. If you choose to block the download, follow these steps to fix it:

On iPhone and iPad: Hit the download link again on the website and tap Allow or Download when asked. If you don’t see the Allow button, clear your browser data.

Allow and Download popup alert in Safari before downloading a file

On Mac: Open Safari and click Safari > Settings from the top menu bar. Now, go to Websites > Downloads > click the drop-down menu next to the website name and choose Allow . While you’re here, also make sure it says ‘ Ask ‘ or ‘ Allow ‘ next to ‘ When visiting other websites .’

Allow websites to download files in Safari on Mac

Force Quit and reopen Safari

On iPhone and iPad: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold or double-press the Home button to enter App Switcher. From here, drag the Safari app card all the way up to close it .

On Mac: Save your work in any other open Safari tabs. Next, click the Apple icon  and choose Force Quit . Here, select Safari and click Force Quit .

Now reopen Safari and try downloading the file again.

Use alternate download links

You may see more than one download link on a website. If one link fails to work, try the other one. Note: Sometimes, picking a different download quality (for a video, audio, or image) should do the trick.

Choose different download quality for image, video, and audio

Set Safari download location to anything other than iCloud Drive

If you have set Safari to download files to iCloud Drive,  switch it to any other local storage folder using the steps below:

On iPhone or iPad: Settings > Safari > Downloads > On My iPhone or Other .

On Mac: Open Safari and click Safari > Settings from the top menu bar. From the General section, select Downloads , Desktop , or any local folder next to ‘ File download location .’

File download location in Safari on Mac

Stop Safari from automatically opening files after download

By default, Safari on Mac is set to open files after downloading them. That means if you download a ZIP file, Safari will automatically unzip it after downloading. In rare cases, this may cause the download to fail, not complete successfully, or not even start in the first place if the file you’re trying to download is incompatible. Therefore, it’s best to turn it off from Safari Settings > General > uncheck ‘ Open “safe” files after downloading .’

Restart your device

If Safari is unable to download files due to minor glitches, save your work and do a restart .

Make sure your device has sufficient free space

New file downloads will only succeed if your iPhone, iPad, or Mac has enough free space. So go to Settings, and check how much free storage you have. If it’s full, use these tutorials to free up space:

  • 50+ tips to free space on your iPhone and iPad
  • 30+ ways to free storage space on your Mac

Clear Safari history and cache

One of the most reliable solutions to fix Safari issues is clearing its history and website data .

On iPhone and iPad, you can do this from Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data .

On Mac, click History from the top menu bar and select Clear History .

Try disabling a recently installed Safari extension

If you could download files earlier but can’t after installing an extension, then that extension is likely the culprit. Remove it, restart your device, and now you should have no problem downloading files.

On iPhone and iPad: Head over to this guide on installing and removing Safari extensions .

On Mac: Go to Safari Settings > Extensions > select the extension and click Uninstall .

Uninstall extension from Safari on Mac

Update Safari

Safari updates are tied to system updates on iPhone and iPad. So, go to Settings app > General > Software Update and get the latest version of the operating system.

On Mac, you can update Safari from System Settings .

Update your Mac

If you’re on an older version of macOS, consider updating to the latest version, which should improve your computer’s overall working and stability.

On macOS Ventura and later, go to System Settings > General > Software Update . And on macOS Monterey and earlier, go to System Preferences > Software Update .

[Tips]: Problems encountered when downloading videos in Safari

Downloading videos from the Internet is a big part of the internet experience; but often you cannot download videos directly from your Safari browser. Sure, you can opt to stream videos online, but streaming requires that you be connected to the internet all the times, which may not be realistic. Downloading videos is also a great solution when you have a slow internet connection that leads to long periods of video buffering. There are some common issues users face when downloading videos from the Safari browser directly such as:

Problem 1. Saves in the wrong format

When trying to save video files directly using Safari, the window brings up a "save as" option and once downloaded it becomes a .webarchive file as opposed to a .mp4 or .mov file as preferred.

Problem 2. Requires built-in-apps

Unlike other files you can probably download into built in apps like e-books, e-PUBs, and PDF files, videos don't usually download into in-built video apps when using Safari. This is especially a problem when using iOS.

Problem 3. It's not an obvious feature

It is possible to download by clicking on the "window" tab, followed by the "activity" tab and double-clicking the largest file. However this is not available in Safari 8.0 or other newer updates and it's not as immediately obvious to the user as a "download" tab.

Problem 4. More often than not, you can't download videos from Safari

Download videos directly from Safari may not be possible at all. You may require third party tools such as apps, some add-on's or converters to do it. As such, more often than not, it's not an good option.

Video DownloadHelper is an online video download addon that is exclusive for Mozilla Firefox. It can help you download videos from 1000 plus video sites, for totally free. [Tips]: Troubleshooting on using DownloadHelper

Firefox Downloadhelper is an add-on that is useful for extracting web content. It is capable of detecting videos in your browser and it can be used to download videos onto your device. It is very helpful with the Firefox browser, but it is not available in other browsers like Safari. However, "Downloadhelper not working" is a common error and it can be very frustrating. Some issues with Downloadhelper include:

Problem 1. DownloadHelper does not work with YouTube

YouTube might sometimes block add-ons so you will no longer use DownloadHelper to capture YouTube videos but you need to get help from a third-party video downloader like iTube HD Video Downloader, which could download video with Youtube other other over 10000 sites.

Problem 2. Cannot disable DownloadHelper

You can go to the "Tools" tab and find "Add-ons". Then you can find the DownloadHelper in the Add-on list. Simply click "Disable and Uninstall" to disable it from your browser.

Problem 3. The Version of Firefox in Use

Sometimes with a new version of Firefox an older version of Downloadhelper is required for it to work. Similarly sometimes the Firefox version is too old for it to work with the version of Downloadhelper. The mismatch can be very frustrating.

Problem 4. Not Working with YouTube

YouTube is the most popular video sharing website with videos ranging from cat videos to science tutorials to the moon landing. So downloading videos from it is commonplace. Yet sometimes Downloadhelper will work for years and then suddenly stop working with YouTube due to compatibility issues with the website.

Problem 5. Troubleshooting may be too technical

Most internet users only have layman computer skills so when the need to troubleshoot Downloadhelper arises, they may only be able to do basic things like restarting their browser or updating the extension. Anything more complicated than that may leave them stumped.

Problem 6. Downloadhelper does not detect the video

Sometimes the video file is available on the browser but Downloadhelper does not detect the video and therefore doesn't offer the download option. Even with the latest versions of the browsers and the extensions, this could still happen.

Problem 7. Flash files may require conversion

When a file is in MPEG-4 format, once it's downloaded on an Apple device, you're set to watch it again offline. However if it's a Flash file you might need to convert it and when using Downloadhelper the conversion process is technical and may be difficult to execute. For more troubleshooting, go to DownloadHelper Not Working Fixed .

Conclusion:

Today we have discussed two solutions to download videos in Safari , one is iTube HD Video Downloader, the best DownloadHelper for Safari. Another is to download videos from Safari direcly. Besides, we also talked about the downloaderhelper for Firefox and the problems about it. Among them, we highly recommend iTube HD Video Downloader, which could download any video embedded in the page with one click from over 10,000 sites and solve all the problems encountered on using safari directly or safari add-ons to download videos.

Introduction

Downloading videos from Safari on your iPhone can be a convenient way to have your favorite videos accessible offline, whether it’s for entertainment, education, or any other purpose. However, Safari does not provide a built-in feature to download videos directly to your device. But worry not, as there are alternative methods you can use to achieve this.

In this article, we will explore three different methods to download videos from Safari on your iPhone. These methods involve using a video downloader app, a file manager app, or a video downloading website. Each method offers its own unique set of benefits, and we will guide you through the steps for each one.

Before we dive into the specific methods, it’s important to note that downloading videos may infringe upon copyright laws, so it’s crucial to respect intellectual property rights and only download videos that you have the rights to access and store. Always ensure you have proper authorization or permission to download videos.

Now, let’s explore the different methods and find the one that suits your needs best.

Method 1: Using a Video Downloader App

If you prefer a dedicated app for downloading videos from Safari on your iPhone, there are several reliable options available on the App Store. These apps are designed specifically for downloading videos and provide a seamless experience. Follow the steps below to download videos using a video downloader app:

  • Start by searching for a video downloader app in the App Store and choose one that has positive ratings and reviews.
  • Install the chosen app on your iPhone and open it.
  • Launch Safari and navigate to the webpage containing the video you want to download.
  • Once you have found the video, tap on it to open it in Safari’s built-in video player.
  • Look for the share button, which typically appears as a square with an arrow pointing upwards.
  • Tap on the share button, and a share sheet will appear. Scroll through the options and locate the video downloader app you installed.
  • Select the video downloader app from the list, and it will open with the video already prepared for download.
  • In the downloader app, you will usually have the option to select the video quality and format. Choose your desired settings.
  • After selecting the desired settings, tap on the download button, which is typically represented by a downward arrow or cloud icon.
  • The video downloader app will start the downloading process, and you can monitor the progress within the app.
  • Once the download is complete, you can access the downloaded video within the app itself or in your iPhone’s gallery.

Using a dedicated video downloader app offers the advantage of simplicity and convenience. These apps often have additional features such as the ability to download multiple videos simultaneously, batch downloading, and organizing downloaded videos into playlists. Explore the features of the video downloader app you choose to make the most out of your video downloading experience.

Method 2: Using a File Manager App

Another method to download videos from Safari on your iPhone is by utilizing a file manager app. File manager apps not only allow you to manage files on your device but also provide the ability to download and save videos directly to your device. Follow the steps below to download videos using a file manager app:

  • First, install a reliable file manager app from the App Store that supports video downloading. There are various options available, so choose one that suits your preferences.
  • Once the file manager app is installed, open Safari and go to the webpage containing the video you want to download.
  • Locate the video on the webpage and tap on it to play it in Safari’s built-in video player.
  • While the video is playing, look for the share button, represented by a square with an arrow pointing upwards, usually located at the bottom or top of the screen.
  • Tap on the share button, and a share sheet will appear with various options. Scroll through the options and find the file manager app you installed.
  • Select the file manager app from the list, and it will launch with the video ready for download.
  • In the file manager app, you may have the option to choose the destination folder or create a new folder for the downloaded video.
  • Once you have selected the destination folder, tap on the download button or the option to save the video.
  • The file manager app will start the download process, and you can monitor the progress within the app.
  • Once the download is complete, you can access the downloaded video within the file manager app.
  • From the file manager app, you can also move or share the downloaded video to other apps or your device’s gallery.

Using a file manager app for video downloads offers flexibility and control over your downloaded files. These apps often provide additional file management features such as organizing files into folders, renaming files, and transferring files to cloud storage. Explore the capabilities of the file manager app you choose to enhance your video downloading and file management experience.

Method 3: Using a Video Downloading Website

If you prefer to download videos from Safari on your iPhone without installing any additional apps, using a video downloading website is a convenient option. These websites allow you to enter the URL of the video you want to download and provide you with a direct download link. Follow the steps below to download videos using a video downloading website:

  • Start by opening Safari on your iPhone and navigate to the webpage containing the video you want to download.
  • Once you have found the video, tap and hold on the video player until a menu appears.
  • From the menu, select the option to copy the video’s URL or link.
  • Now, open a new tab in Safari and search for a reliable video downloading website.
  • Once you have found a suitable website, open it in Safari.
  • In the video downloading website, you will typically find a URL or link field where you can paste the video’s URL.
  • Tap on the URL field and select the option to paste the copied URL.
  • After pasting the URL, look for the download or convert button on the website.
  • Tap on the download or convert button, and the website will generate a direct download link for the video.
  • Once the direct download link is ready, tap on it, and the video will start to download.
  • The download progress may vary depending on the size of the video and your internet connection speed.
  • After the download is complete, you can access the downloaded video in your iPhone’s gallery or the Downloads folder.

Using a video downloading website offers a simple and efficient solution for downloading videos without installing any apps. However, keep in mind that the availability and reliability of video downloading websites may vary, so it’s important to choose a reputable and trustworthy website.

Additionally, be cautious when using video downloading websites, as some may include ads or potentially harmful content. Always exercise caution and be mindful of the websites you choose to use.

Downloading videos from Safari on your iPhone can be achieved through various methods, each offering its own advantages. Whether you prefer using a video downloader app, a file manager app, or a video downloading website, you now have the knowledge and steps to download videos with ease.

Using a video downloader app provides a dedicated and user-friendly experience, allowing you to customize video quality and batch download multiple videos. File manager apps offer flexibility and control over your downloaded files, along with additional file management features. Video downloading websites offer a convenient solution without the need for additional app installations.

However, it is important to remember that downloading videos may have legal implications, and it is essential to respect copyright laws. Only download videos for which you have the necessary authorization or permission.

Choose the method that aligns with your preferences, and enjoy downloading videos from Safari on your iPhone for offline viewing. Whether it’s for educational purposes, entertainment, or simply to have your favorite videos readily available, these methods provide a convenient way to enjoy videos anytime, anywhere.

Remember to exercise caution while using any downloading method and be mindful of the websites and apps you choose to download videos from. With the right approach, you can enhance your video downloading experience on your iPhone.

How I use my iPad

How i use my ipad: save images – a free safari image downloader [video].

Avatar for Jeff Benjamin

Unlike the desktop version of Safari, the iOS version lacks the handy inspector that allows you to access web pages resources like background images.  Save Images is a free iOS Safari extension that lets you quickly identify and save images from a web page. Watch our hands-on video walkthrough to see it in action.

Once you download Save Images from the App Store , you can enable and move its extension via the Safari share sheet. After landing on a web page with images that you wish to identify and save, simply tap the Save Images button in the share sheet.

Save Images will list all of the web page’s available images, including CSS background images. Users can then tap on an image and copy its URL, or save the image directly to the Photo Library.

You can configure the types of images that Save Images will identify via its preferences. Just open the Save Images app, and use the three available switches to customize the extension to your liking.

Because the iOS version of Safari lacks all of the handy developer-centric tools of the desktop version, extensions like Save Images are instrumental to my iPad workflow. You can download the utility free of charge from the App Store.

What do you think about Save Images? Do you have another way that you go about identifying and saving images from the web? Sound off in the comments with your thoughts.
