37 Teacher Travel Grants: Free Travel Opportunities for Teachers

summer travel for teachers 2023

Did you know that there are numerous fellowship and grant programs that allow teachers to travel for FREE? Keep reading to learn more!

One of my favorite parts of being a teacher is the schedule. With two months off in the summer, and several weeks off during the school year, the possibilities for travel are endless. Over the past few years I have done a variety of trips that have not only been fun and relaxing, but have also provided me with a wealth of knowledge that has improved my teaching practice. I have studied flamenco guitar in Spain, practiced baroque flute in Nova Scotia, and have attended music education conferences across the United States. However, traveling can be expensive, especially when you are working with a limited teacher budget.

Luckily, there are a variety of government organizations, private companies and non-profit international organizations who sponsor travel grants specifically for teachers. These grants are perfect for teachers who want to broaden their horizons and improve their teaching practice abroad. These programs all differ in requirements and details, but in general, they are highly competitive and involve some type of research or teaching while abroad.

Below is a list of 37 different grant and fellowship programs that allow free (or almost free) travel opportunities for teachers.

From Disney to Las Vegas: Free and discounted travel offers for teachers

Summer Hull

Editor's Note

On the long list of people who deserve a vacation, teachers rank near the very top.

For Teacher Appreciation Week, we're raising more than an apple to educators with this list of spots where teachers can enjoy a teacher discount for some free or discounted fun, relaxation or entertainment.

A few extra special teachers will even win an all-expenses-paid cruise through Norwegian Cruise Line's annual Giving Joy sweepstakes . You can nominate your favorite teacher (or teachers) and 100 lucky educators will win a cruise and up to a $25,000 donation for their school. Nominations are open now and close on June 3, 2022.

Teacher discounts at Disney Springs hotels

summer travel for teachers 2023

Some hotels within Disney Springs (but not the actual Walt Disney World Disney Resorts, sadly) are offering ongoing teacher discounts. These hotels provide many, but not all, of the perks at true Disney resorts, including early admission to the parks. These properties are chain properties under flags such as Wyndham , Holiday Inn and Hilton .

The Hilton Orlando's website advertises teacher appreciate rates from about $215 per night, but most nights land closer to the $250 to $350 range. Ask for the TEA rate code when calling to book (you might be able to get help finding better rates by picking up the phone), or book online.

The Holiday Inn Orlando , within Disney Springs, also offers ongoing discounted rates to teachers and education support staff at every level, from daycare through college. Along with the discounted nightly rate, up to four kids ages 11 and under are eligible to eat for free while on property.

Related: Here are TPG's favorite Disney Springs properties .

If you're not a teacher or can't find a discount on the dates you want, here's a guide to using points to stay near Disney World and our guide to visiting Walt Disney World .

Teacher discounts at the Disney Swan and Dolphin

Perhaps even better than staying in Disney Springs is staying within walking distance to Epcot and Disney's Hollywood Studios at the Disney Swan or Dolphin — both of which offer teacher (and nurse, medical personnel, law enforcement and first responder) discounts. With this one, you have to call 1-888-828-8850 and ask for the promotional code TEACHERS RATE or add promotional code ZTC to the website for discounts of up to 25% off regular room rates at the time of booking.

I did a quick search for upcoming dates and found teacher discounts of around $30 off per night. However, some dates appear to be blacked out for the teachers' discount, so be sure to do your research.

Keep in mind that these properties also have discounts of up to 25% on connecting rooms if you are traveling with the whole family — you just have to ask.

Free theme park and attraction tickets for teachers

Some theme parks offer free tickets to teachers, presumably so the teachers will want to set up a field trip with their students in the future. But regardless of the motivation, free is free.

  • SeaWorld Florida : Free, unlimited admission for Florida K-12 teachers through Aug. 31, 2022.
  • SeaWorld San Diego : A free Teacher Fun Card good for unlimited free admission through Dec. 31, 2022, for California and Arizona K-12 teachers.
  • SeaWorld San Antonio : Free Teacher Card valid for unlimited admission to all rides, shows, animal encounters and attractions. Valid for certified Texas Pre-K through high school teachers.
  • Kennedy Space Center : Free educator study passes for teachers from Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, good for complimentary access to the visitors complex. Note that substantial proof/identification is required: either a copy of your teaching certificate, a photo ID that shows your title (teacher/educator) or a signed letter from the school principal.
  • Legoland Florida : Free Teacher Annual Pass for Florida Pre-K-Grade 12 teachers good for a year of free admission to Legoland, Madame Tussauds Orlando and Sea Life Orlando. Upgrade to a more flexible pass that includes water park admission and more for $59.99. (Check out TPG's guide to Legoland Florida .)
  • Sesame Place : Teachers in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York and New Jersey are eligible for a Teacher Pass that grants unlimited Sesame Place admission for a full year. 2022 registration is closed, but registration for 2023 should open in the fall of 2022. If you had a Teacher Pass for 2021, it should automatically renew for 2022.
  • Arizona Science Center : Free general admission and discounts at the planetarium and giant screen theater for Arizona K-12 educators.

Additional travel discounts for teachers

Teacher travel discounts are out there if you search and ask. A few additional examples include:

  • Arizona Grand Resort & Spa : 20% off for educators.
  • Chatham Bars Inn : 30% off for teachers and support staff with the Educators Appreciation Offer, includes stays during school vacations.
  • Caesar's Family of Casino Resorts : up to 30% off for teachers (and students) at participating hotels within the U.S.
  • Golden Nugget in Las Vegas : up to 30% discount on room rates for active educators.
  • Scott Resort and Spa in Arizona : 20% off for teachers.
  • TradeWinds Resort : 10% off the best available rate for teachers.
  • Gaylord Hotels : Teachers and school personnel receive discounted room rates at all five Gaylord properties in the U.S.
  • CheapCaribbean's Beach4Teach Club : Sign up for a promotional code worth $150 off your next all-inclusive vacation of five nights or more.
  • Sixt : 5% off U.S. car rentals for teachers and school employees.
  • Budget Truck Rental : 20% off local moves and 15% off one-way moves for teachers with discount code TEACH.
  • Radisson Hotels Americas : 20% off stays and a room upgrade on check-in.
  • The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes : Rates from $195 to $349 per room, per night, for teachers.
  • Boston Harbor Hotel : Up to 30% off best available rate for teachers, educators and parents.

Bottom line

Teacher discounts on travel are not available everywhere, but they do exist.

If you are eligible and don't see what you want on this list, try a little searching online. And when in doubt, pick up the phone to ask. Also, keep in mind that discounts for government employees sometimes apply to public school teachers, too.

It has been designed to inspire you to make the most of every moment of your vacation, so take chances and embrace Summer 2023!

The Teacher Seeking Adventure

summer travel for teachers 2023

After having your head down molding young minds, exploring the natural wonders of national parks can be a great chance to appreciate an outdoor adventure. Parks like Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, or Acadia National Park offer breathtaking landscapes, hiking trails, wildlife encounters, and opportunities to connect with nature.

When visiting these locations it’s important to pack the necessities. I have created a short list for hiking essentials based on personal experience!

  • Collapsible Water Bottle with Hook : https://amzn.to/45VTnVs
  • Hiking boots : Women’s https://amzn.to/43utydI / Men’s https://amzn.to/3Ci6suL
  • Lightweight Hiking Backpack : https://amzn.to/3qxwAPJ
  • Blister prevention : https://amzn.to/3qCAOpa

These items in addition to your favorite snacks and a comfortable outfit will have you feeling like you could last out in the wilderness for days!

You might also consider traveling to more off-the-beaten-path destinations like Thailand, Costa Rica, Morocco, or Vietnam, which offer unique cultural experiences, stunning landscapes, and immersive encounters. Given the timing, perhaps these locations might be more fit for Summer 2024!

The Teacher Longing for Relaxation

summer travel for teachers 2023

You’ve been working hard and deserve to unwind before the next academic year. Destinations like Hawaii, Mexico’s Riviera Maya, the Caribbean islands, or coastal regions in the United States offer opportunities to soak up the sun, enjoy water activities, and rejuvenate by the sea.

Perhaps you want to spend some time on the water. Ocean cruises can transport you to new locations all while you are enjoying some much-needed pampering and relaxation. In fact, Norwegian Cruise Line is celebrating teachers and their classroom dedication by providing 20 free cruises. Send this link to your colleagues and loved ones so they can nominate you for a 7-day voyage! https://contest.nclgivingjoy.com/

In addition to Norwegian, Holland America Line is also celebrating teachers with a $100 onboard credit voucher for a variety of sailings from ancient European ruins to the rugged wilderness of Denali!

Always be sure to check for teacher discounts when traveling, and definitely let your travel advisor know your profession!

The History Buff Teacher

summer travel for teachers 2023

You may be seeking cultural immersion and exploration, cities like New York, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, or Barcelona provide a wealth of museums, historical landmarks, culinary experiences, and vibrant city life. These destinations offer opportunities to delve into art, history, cuisine, and unique local traditions.

You’ll want to explore each of these locations with an experienced tour guide to really get the full experience. Chances are, they have more fun facts and insider knowledge than Google!

The Artsy Teacher

summer travel for teachers 2023

Teachers who have a passion for art have several fantastic destinations to consider. If you find yourself gravitating towards art museums, festivals and craft fairs while traveling, Asheville, North Carolina might suit you! I frequented Asheville every year growing up and experienced more art, character and culture as a child than I realized until my earlier adult years. This location is perfect for family travel and visiting solo!

The vibrant art scene of New York City makes it a dream destination for art-loving teachers. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and the Guggenheim Museum showcase a diverse range of artworks. Additionally, exploring the galleries of Chelsea and the street art in neighborhoods like Bushwick can provide an immersive artistic experience.

Paris is a haven for art lovers as well. The Louvre Museum, home to the iconic Mona Lisa, along with the Musée d’Orsay and Centre Pompidou, showcase an incredible range of masterpieces!

Now that I’ve got you thinking…

Will you stay local or take your summer international?

Travel the World With Grants Just for Educators

These scholarships for educators can pay for your travel expenses and make you, and your students, richer for the experience..

Grants for Educators - Woman with Laptop Wearing an Orange Parka Sitting on Mountain Rocks

by NEA Member Benefits

Travel is an enriching experience all on its own. But with a grant or scholarship, educators not only get to explore an interesting place or topic; they get to bring that valuable experience back to their own classrooms. If you’ve ever wanted to travel to historic sites, interview experts, research alongside field professionals or even learn an artisanal craft, travel grants and fellowships can make your goals a reality.

Design your own enrichment trip

Fund for Teachers. Perhaps the largest provider of educator-enrichment funding, Fund for Teachers (FFT) offers grants for self-designed summer fellowships. This empowers teachers to take control of their own learning in a way they know will have the most impact on their students. FFT has awarded $33.5 million in grants to nearly 9,000 of America’s top educators, and FFT Fellows have traveled to 152 different countries on all seven continents.

Program details: Grants of up to $5,000 per individual or $10,000 for teams of two or more. Who’s eligible: Full-time, pre-K–12 teachers with at least three years’ teaching experience who spend 50% or more of their time in classroom instruction with students and intend to return to a classroom or teaching environment. Application deadline: The application cycle begins in October and ends in January. For a better chance of success, be sure to review the Scoring Criteria , which details how applications are evaluated.

Gain an international perspective

Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms Program. The Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms Program (Fulbright TGC) knows that for students to have a global perspective, their instructors need to gain one through their own international travel. Each year, about 80 educators are selected for the program (funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the nonprofit IREX) and challenged to transform their classrooms to enhance students’ global points of view.

The yearlong fellowship includes a free online training course plus a trip to Washington, D.C., for a collaborative Global Education Symposium. It culminates with a two- to three-week international trip to a TGC-selected location. Past countries have included Brazil, Morocco, India, the Philippines and Kazakhstan. Once at their destination, educators connect with local teachers and host schools to exchange ideas and even lead classes.

Program details: The fellowship covers airfare, hotel and travel incidentals for the Washington, D.C., and international trips. Fellows earn professional development Continuing Education Units. Who’s eligible: Full-time, K-12 teachers who are U.S. citizens and residents with three years’ experience who spend 50% or more of their time in a student-facing role. Application deadline: The application cycle begins in December or January and closes in March. Apply at irex.org or join its mailing list to receive details about the next trips.

Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program. The U.S. Department of Education’s Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program offers approximately three summer seminars annually, each hosting 16 U.S. educators in the social sciences and humanities for four to six weeks. The seminar locations in 2021 were Iceland, Morocco and Mexico. The program aims to improve participants’ understanding and knowledge of the people and cultures of other countries.

Program details: The grant includes airfare, room and board and program costs within the host country, but participants are responsible for some shared costs. In 2021, that cost was $650. Who’s eligible: Educators responsible for curriculum or instruction in the social sciences or humanities and languages, including elementary and secondary teachers, administrators or curriculum specialists, faculty or administrators from institutions of higher education, librarians, museum educators and media or resource specialists. Applicants must also be citizens or permanent residents of the United States holding a bachelor’s degree or higher with at least three years’ experience and current full-time employment in one of the professions listed above in a U.S. school system, institution of higher learning, local or state education agency, library or museum. Application deadline: The application cycle is typically announced in the fall or winter for the following year (e.g., fall or winter 2021 announcement for 2022 programs) with a deadline at the end of December.  Contact the Department of Education  for future application schedules, and check the  Hints for Preparing a Competitive Application .

Cruise in the name of science or geography

Grosvenor Teacher Fellow Program. This is no ordinary boat ride. The 35 or so teachers chosen for the Grosvenor Teacher Fellow Program (GTF), which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society and Lindblad Expeditions, join a Lindblad expedition voyage aboard the National Geographic Explorer, National Geographic Endeavour II, National Geographic Sea Lion and or National Geographic Quest. Educators learn about the land and sea from on-board naturalists and have opportunities for activities such as kayaking, Zodiac trips and cultural tours of local towns.

Previous expeditions included trips to the Galápagos Islands, where educators kayaked and snorkeled among stingrays and sea lions, and Iceland, where they cruised alongside humpback and orca whales and observed blue-morph arctic fox pups. Part of the fellowship includes developing classroom activities to teach their students the geographic and ocean issues they learned about on their trip.

Program details: Fellowships include expenses for a 10- to 17-day expedition during the summer or December holiday, plus a required pre-expedition workshop in Washington, D.C. Fellows are expected to be active and engaged members of the Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship over the course of the expedition year and the year following. Who’s eligible: Pre-K–12 teachers and informal educators from the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico and Department of Defense Activity Schools who have demonstrated a dedication to geography education. Applicants must plan to return to a classroom or teaching environment the year following the expedition. Application deadline: The call for applications begins each fall. Sign up for updates here . See a  sample application .

Teacher at Sea Program. Love the open ocean? The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has sent more than 800 educators from all 50 states to the Teacher at Sea program. Past Teacher at Sea ships operated in a variety of areas from the Hawaiian Islands and Alaska to the northeast Atlantic and the Florida coast.

Cruises focus on either fisheries, oceanography or hydrography. Educators might help conduct research toward better understanding of marine habitats, sustainable fishing and climate or even assist in scanning the sea floor for underwater hazards in order to improve nautical charts.

Program details: Fellowships include all travel costs for two-week to one-month cruises, including transportation to and from the ship, lodging and per diem allowance. Who’s eligible: Currently employed, full-time, pre-K-12 teachers or administrators; community college, college or university teachers; museum or aquarium educators; and adult education teachers. Applicants must be permanent residents or citizens of the U.S. who will return to the same or similar employment the next year. Please note: Due to COVID-19, the ships did not sail in 2020 or 2021, so the 2022 voyage will be for those who qualified in 2020. The next round of new applicants can apply for the 2023 season. Application deadline: Applications will open for the 2023 season in October 2022.

Teach Earth Program. If donning waist-high neoprene waders and trekking through the Arctic wetlands of Manitoba collecting water samples sounds like your idea of a cool summer vacation, try for a Teach Earth USA Fellowship from the Earthwatch Institute . Each year, the institute sends about 50 teachers to join one- to two-week expeditions with world-renowned scientists working in the field to help collect samples and analyze them in the lab.

Study in Scotland, England, Japan and more

Specialty groups offer a host of teacher travel opportunities for specific types of study. Here are a few examples:

  • The National Association of Japan-America Societies offers Keizai Koho Center Teacher Fellowships for grades 6–12 economics, social studies, geography and history teachers to tour Tokyo and its surroundings. In 2019 the program featured visits to Japanese schools, companies and cultural events as well as opportunities to talk with students, teachers, executives, scholars and experts on Japanese society and its education system.
  • The English-Speaking Union of the United States offers  TLab-UK , formerly the British Universities Summer School (BUSS) program, on the humanities in Scotland and England. Past trips to Edinburgh and Oxford universities explored literature, creative writing, history and politics, and participants in the Teaching Shakespeare Through Performance program in London got a chance to perform on the stage of the Globe Theatre. U.S. teachers should contact the closest of the organization’s  participating branches  to apply for full funding.
  • The Jewish Foundation for the Righteous (JFR) selects  Alfred Lerner Fellows  for intensive Holocaust education in their  Summer Institute for Teachers  at Columbia University in New York City. Alfred Lerner fellows who complete the institute and remain active with their local Holocaust centers become eligible for an advanced seminar in New Jersey and the European Study Program in Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic, where 15 fellows visit concentration camps including Auschwitz, ghetto sites, survivors, rescuers and historians. Programs do have a cost, but are heavily subsidized by the JFR.

Program details, eligibility and application deadlines vary by program.

Teachers, Here’s How to Land an Amazing Summer Learning Opportunity

summer travel for teachers 2023

  • Share article

Imagine any one of the following scenarios:

  • You’re employed at a school that recently opened its doors to several students of newly immigrated families. You travel to their native country to learn about their culture and the journey they endured to get here.
  • You’re a U.S. history and government teacher who works in a small town with strong partisanship politics. You meet for several hours with professional peers to dig into Constitutional law and its modern-day applications, and hear insights from one of the nation’s leading experts on the subject.
  • Most of your high school students have never traveled beyond their small Georgia town to see the ocean, nor do they know about professionals who earn their living by studying what’s below its surface. But you spend weeks aboard a research vessel, sharing with students live accounts of marine life—including pods of dolphins swimming at the surface—and facilitating interviews between your crewmates and students.

These aren’t just teacher fantasies. They’re examples of real-life learning opportunities made possible by grant-funded organizations that aim to provide teachers with low- or no-cost ways to further their professional interests and passions during the summer. Here are some tips on securing one of these unforgettable summer learning experiences in the future.

Most grant-funded summer programs for teachers open the application process in the preceding fall and close it by the following March. The applications tend to require far more preparation than filling in simple blanks. Some of the programs, like Fund for Teachers, provide grants to teacher “fellows” who design their own proposals, which requires significant planning by applicants.

So for those serious about applying for an experiential learning program next summer, it makes sense to start sifting through options now.

Show your strength as a candidate

Organizations that offer up to thousands of dollars to support teachers’ summer learning experiences want to know their candidates have sound intentions and that they’re not just looking for a free vacation.

So, what makes a strong candidate? “Someone who can make a great case for how they’re going to use this experience in the classroom,” said Emily Susko, program support specialist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Teacher at Sea Program. The federally administered program has introduced more than 850 teachers to NOAA research through immersive experiences monitoring U.S. fisheries, measuring ocean trends, and charting unknown regions of the seafloor.

Beyond that shared overarching principle, what makes a strong candidate can vary widely depending on the program and its individual needs.

070523 disability student activist BS

Flexibility, fortitude, and the ability to follow orders are key for NOAA’s Teacher at Sea Program, said Susko. This makes sense, as teacher participants are expected to work as part of a team, in a confined space for long periods of time. “They have to be able to roll with things,” Susko said.

Demonstrations of initiative and creativity will likely pique the interest of administrators at the Fund for Teachers, whose applicants propose projects of their own design. More important to them than the “what” is the “why,” explained Carrie Caton, director of communications at Fund for Teachers. “We are nationally unique in that we put no parameters on where or what the Prek-12 teachers learn, as long as they can thoroughly articulate the why,” she said. “We trust that teachers are professionals who can best assess what will enrich their students and school communities.”

Be prepared to serve as a program ambassador

Some organizations that make it possible for teachers to embark on valuable learning experiences for free do hope for something in return. NOAA’s Susko makes clear what their Teacher at Sea Program expects from participating teachers.

“Part of NOAA’s mission is to collect all of this crucial environmental information across a range of topics, part of that is to be sharing that with the public,” Susko said. “We find that teachers are incredibly effective ambassadors for NOAA, for helping the general public understand what we are doing in service of the nation.”

Show persistence

Administrators of several summer learning programs for teachers emphasized the need for persistence in the face of possible initial rejection. “If it doesn’t work the first year, try again the next year,” said Carol Peters, director of the division of education programs at the National Endowment for the Humanities. “Eventually, you will get in.”

Start the search here

The following is a sample of organizations that provide summer experiential learning opportunities to teachers at no or low cost. While not exhaustive, the list provides a solid start for educators looking to expand their summer learning outside the classroom.

Fund for Teachers designates grants for teachers’ self-designed summer fellowships. To date, FFT fellows have traveled to 152 different countries.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History offers 23 summer programs for k-12 teachers, online and in-person, on a range of (American history) topics.

The National Endowment for the Humanities provides tuition-free opportunities for K-12 educators interested in studying a breadth of topics related to the humanities.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Teacher at Sea Program allows k-12 educators an opportunity to join NOAA scientists aboard an ocean research vessel as a member of the science team.

How to Get a Teacher Travel Grant

Are you an art teacher longing to see the art treasures of Florence, Paris or Beijing? Are you a language teacher desiring to visit one or more of the countries where the language you teach is spoken? Teacher travel grants can make such trips possible.

What is a teacher travel grant?

Travel grants help U.S. teachers travel overseas on short-term visits to experience new cultures and explore new ideas. It’s not a vacation: Educators usually explore different instructional methods and broaden their horizons through cultural and academic immersion programs.

Government organizations, private companies and non-profit international organizations sponsor travel grants for teachers. Some programs give the money to the teacher; others pay expenses directly. Some programs are teacher exchanges where a teacher from overseas goes to your school while you teach at their school; with others, you travel independently.

Types of travel grants

Grants usually target a subject area or emphasize specific research or professional development goals. While some grants have a wide, general focus like a student exchange programs, others function as travel-work or teach-abroad programs.

Grant requirements

Limitations and requirements on grants run a wide gamut. For instance:

  • Grants may be designed for teachers in high schools, middle schools or elementary school teachers.
  • Some teacher travel grants pay only partial amounts, while others cover round-trip airfare plus boarding, food and incidental expenses.
  • Most grant terms last six to eight weeks, though a handful of highly selective programs offer travel grants of up to six months.
  • Grant travel usually happens in the summer when school is out.

Who offers teacher travel grants?

Numerous travel grants are available to teachers in U.S. public and private schools. Here are a few notable programs:

Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching Program

This highly competitive and selective travel grant is available through the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Awards. It’s open to teachers, curriculum specialists, guidance counselors, special education coordinators and librarians.

If you’re selected, you can spend three to six months in an overseas school, university or research center. You’ll also be required to work at least some time in a local school in the host country. You’ll also have to complete a “Capstone Project” that benefits students in your home schools. The grant pays all travel expenses, lodging, programs costs and tuition fees and other costs.

Visit the site .

National Endowment for the Humanities

This federally funded program offers up to $6,000 for travel expenses for teachers wishing to do summer research in their field both in the United States and abroad. The NEH also offers a “Summer Seminars and Institutes” program in the US and abroad, where teachers join organized continuing education programs. As you would expect, this is a highly competitive program.

Earthwatch Institute

Earthwatch offers field enrichment trips to teachers in grades K-12. More than 90 destinations are offered, both in the US and in other countries. You’ll get to work alongside experts in your field doing important work. All expenses are covered at the destination and some trips offer a stipend to cover travel to and from the destination. After the trip, teachers are expected to develop a lesson plan about the subject of their trip and share their experiences with others in their community.

Teachers for Global Classrooms Project (TGC Project)

The TGC Project travel grant is available to secondary school teachers in the United States. The International Research and Exchange Board (IREX), a non-profit organization that operates under the aegis of the Bureau of Education and Cultural Awards, manages the TGC Project.

The program offers a fully paid, two- or three-week international fellowship in countries including India, Ghana, Brazil, Indonesia and Ukraine. Teachers graduate with a deeper understanding of international pedagogy. To qualify for the fellowship, teachers must successfully complete an online course and attend a Global Education Symposium in Washington, D.C.

American Councils Exchange Program

American Councils offers a program known as “Educational Seminars” that pays for U.S. educators to participate in short-term teacher-exchange programs in other countries. The program helps teachers broaden their horizons by learning about the culture, teaching methodologies, educational system and social mores in different countries.

Teachers must have at least three years of experience to apply. Educational seminars are available in China, India, Brazil and Portugal. The program pays for all travel, lodging and program-related expenses.

Fund for Teachers

Fund for Teachers, a private non-profit foundation, provides travel fellowships for close to 500 teachers each year. The program allows teachers to propose international projects that they think will benefit them professionally and have an impact on their students.

The fund provides grants of up to $5,000 to teachers whose proposals are accepted. Teams can receive a grant of up to $10,000 under the program. Since 2001, Fund for Teachers has provided travel grants to nearly 5,000 teachers and has approved fellowships in more than 120 countries around the world.

Applying for teacher travel grants

Each travel grant program has its own deadline and requirements. Generally, teachers need to have at least a few years’ teaching experience. Programs are offered that augment virtually any teacher’s base of knowledge.

Many more travel grants are available to educators. If you’re interested in pursuing these opportunities, keep these points in mind.

  • Institutions offering grants start accepting applications well in advance of when they become available, often six months before the program starts.
  • Though most grants are open to all U.S. educators, they are also highly competitive.
  • Applications usually require a detailed listing of qualifications and experience and a well-reasoned explanation of the projected benefits of traveling abroad on a teacher travel grant.

Don’t think that just because you are living on a teacher’s salary and supporting a family that overseas travel is beyond your means. Well-traveled teachers make better teachers, and there are dozens of organizations that will help make such an experience possible for you.

Summer Abroad for Teachers: Ways to Spend Summer Traveling as a Teacher

Summer abroad experiences can be incredibly enriching for teachers, providing them with new perspectives, cultural insights, and professional development opportunities. But, how is this possible? What options are there to spend summer abroad for teachers?

As a former teacher myself, I've spent multiple summers abroad teaching and traveling . Here are ten ideas and suggestions for teachers considering a summer abroad. Each one is different, and I'll provide resources for getting started on your search. Looking for more opportunities? Get my list of over 200 teacher travel opportunities .

Top Questions for Planning a Summer Abroad for Teachers

How long are opportunities.

Most short-term teaching programs range from just a week to a few months. Some will last a full three months. It's important to choose which one works best with your schedule before applying.

When should I start looking for these opportunities?

Some of the options for summer abroad for teachers are paid, some are ongoing professional development, and still others are volunteer based.

This one depends on which option you are choosing! Many fellowships and professional development programs will start applications during the fall prior to the summer. However, most jobs will begin recruiting a few months before.

You also want to consider any visas or updates to your passport you may need to make. It's best to give yourself plenty of time to apply and ensure you are prepared for your summer abroad.

How much can I make during a summer abroad?

Salaries and benefits will be dependent on the type of teaching job, the location, and of course, the individual employer. However, as a guide, here’s a look at the average monthly pay and perks for typical short-term teaching opportunities.

Summer camps: English teachers working at summer camps in Europe can expect free lodging and meals along with a monthly stipend of around $1,000 to $1,500 USD. Some camps in Germany can pay up to $2,500.

Internships: monthly salaries for teaching interns can range from $700-$1,000 USD. Some internships may include accommodation. Free accommodation is most common in China.

Volunteer: typically unpaid, but benefits generally include free accommodation, meals, and transportation. Other perks like language classes, insurance coverage, or excursions may be offered, too, depending on the program.

Language schools: salaries vary greatly depending on the country or region. English teachers at language schools in Eastern Europe can expect around $800-$1,100 USD a month, while teachers in Asia earn more, usually around $1,500-$2,500 USD.

Where can I go as a teacher for the summer?

Short-term teaching opportunities can be found all over the world but here are some of the best destinations to spend a few weeks or months abroad. You'll find all types of options around the world, though these are some patterns I've seen.

Summer camps : Germany, France, Italy, and Spain are three of the most popular destinations for short-term summer camp opportunities.

Internships : teachers interning in Thailand, China, and Cambodia can expect good pay and benefits for their short-term assignments.

Volunteer : India, Peru, and Nepal happily welcome enthusiastic volunteer teachers and in return provide accommodation, meals, and eager and friendly students.

Language schools : Spain, Italy, Poland, Vietnam, and China are always looking for English speakers for short-term teaching gigs.

International Teaching Programs

Look for international teaching programs that offer short-term opportunities for teachers to work abroad during the summer. Many organizations facilitate exchanges or short-term placements where teachers can teach in a different country.

When searching for teaching jobs for the summer, the most common places to look are directly on school and language center websites, on ESL job boards, and through teaching abroad programs or recruiters.

Here are some places to look during your job hunt:

Teach Abroad Programs and TEFL Providers: CIEE Teach Abroad , The Cultural Exchange Project

Directly on school and language center websites: EF , Berlitz , Maximo Nivel , International House

TEFL Job Boards: Dave’s ESL , GoOverseas.com

TEFL and teacher recruiters: SeekTeachers

English Summer Camps

When it comes to building new skills and developing excellent traits for teaching, it’s hard to beat a summer school or camp.

A summer camp experience allows you to build a rapport with students, including not just English lessons, but also practical activities and an overall culture where students are encouraged to speak in English.

A summer school/camp is a perfect opportunity to show your flair for the unique and give memorable lessons in a different kind of environment. Both qualities blend into each other - you have to show initiative and wherewithal to put your stamp on proceedings.

Problem-solving skills are also vital. You’re likely to come up against challenges you’ve not faced as a teacher, so being able to think quickly is a boost. That, and of course, a real passion for teaching and for getting better at communicating, will make you an outstanding candidate to teach at a summer camp.

Some of the best camps for teachers hoping to gain summer experience include XUK in the UK, the ACLE camp in Italy, and Skouras in Greece. Some other well-known summer camps include The English Camp Company , The American Village , TECS , and The International Camp Network .

English Homestay Tutor or Au Pair

As a homestay tutor or au pair, you typically live with a local family abroad to help care for students on summer vacation and provide English tutoring services. These homestay experiences are a great way to teach English while immersing in the local culture.

A few different websites organize these types of programs, including Workaway , Au Pair , English Nanny , and The Cultural Exchange Project , which specializes in homestay tutor programs. As a homestay tutor or au pair, your salary is typically quite low and may only include room and board, and a small weekly stipend for spending money.

Private Tutor

Teachers can also consider being a private tutor for the summer in a different country. There are two primary ways to become a private tutor: with an online teaching platform or independently. Those who tutor on a platform such as Preply   or Lingoda  enjoy access to a network of students, teaching resources, and marketing help. However, these platforms take a small commission fee or pay teachers a set rate for their services.

Those who opt to tutor privately can set their schedule and pay rate but must find their own students and market themselves independently. Many private tutors advertise their services on their social media accounts, local job boards, and websites like Fiverr   or LinkedIn .

Depending on experience and educational background, private English tutors can typically earn between $10-$25+ per hour.

Consider volunteering with educational organizations or NGOs abroad. This can be a rewarding way to contribute your skills and make a positive impact on education in a different cultural context.

Charities are always looking for certified teachers to fill summer positions, and all the better when they can do so without expenditure.

Always choose these opportunities carefully to make sure you are going with an ethical, well-researched charity organization, especially if you're teaching English abroad. Voluntourism is a major issue, and you do not want to contribute to these issues.

There are specific organizations, like Angloville ,  British Council’s ,  Global Volunteers , Family Legacy ,  and  Projects Abroad  - ethical companies or charities that encourage you to expand your experience teaching. I have personally volunteered and taught abroad with Family Legacy in Zambia .

Peace Corps Response   provides the opportunity to serve a much shorter term than the traditional two-year Peace Corps commitment. Teachers are frequently recruited for Peace Corps Response placements because many limited-term positions focus on education. The Peace Corps pays for your travel and provides a modest living allowance. The application process is lengthy but well worth it! Stints can span from a few months to a year.

Professional Development Travel Experiences

Attend workshops, conferences, or seminars in a foreign country that focus on your specific area of expertise or interest in education. This can be an excellent way to learn about innovative teaching methods and connect with educators from around the world.

Qatar Foundation International (QFI) provides professional and curriculum development for teachers to learn about Arab nations and cultures, some of which include travel.

Fund for Teachers awards fellowships for summer learning experiences to pre K-12 teachers, empowering them to pursue their passions to then pique student engagement. Each fellowship is as unique as the teacher who designed it, and regardless of the destination or discipline, FFT Fellows return to classrooms inspired by their pursuit of ideas, terrains, and cultures and are further equipped to transform student learning.

Earthwatch Institute is an international non-profit whose mission is to engage people worldwide in scientific field research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment. The Teach Earth program is built upon the principle that every individual can contribute to a sustainable planet, regardless of scientific background or skill.

IIE , an independent non-profit organization founded in 1919, is a world leader in the exchange of people and ideas. IIE administers over 200 programs serving more than 20,000 individuals each year. Program participants are selected through a competitive, merit-based process.

A nonprofit organization devoted to the improvement of history education, Gilder Lehrman   has developed an array of programs for schools, teachers, and students that operate in all 50 states. Their workshops focus on American and world history. Private school teachers are expected to contribute to the cost of their workshops.

NEH  is one of the largest funders of humanities programs in the United States, providing dozens of workshops and seminars during the summer months. They range from 1-6 weeks and are offered in the U.S.A. and abroad. Longer programs provide meatier stipends.

The NOAA Teacher at Sea  program provides hands-on learning experiences throughout the year. Teachers join a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research and survey ship to obtain "clearer insight into our ocean planet, a greater understanding of maritime work and studies, and to increase their level of environmental literacy by fostering an interdisciplinary research experience."

Language Immersion Programs/Courses

Participate in a language immersion program in a country where the language is spoken. This can enhance your language skills and give you a deeper understanding of language acquisition, which can be valuable when working with English language learners.

Language schools are always putting on summer classes, and they’re a great way to build your CV, as well as to prepare for the upcoming school year and land those excellent ESL jobs.

It's common for contracted teachers to leave language schools in the middle of a semester or term. Schools will then hire English teachers to work for a short duration before the next semester, perfect for native-speaking travelers who wish to live in one location for a short period of time.

Depending on the course and school, employers may be looking for applicants with previous teaching experience or a teaching certification like TEFL. It 's usually helpful to find jobs with these kinds of language schools while in the same country. This allows you to go in for an interview and, oftentimes, receive the job offer on the spot!

Universities and colleges are great sources for summer language schools, especially in terms of integrating new students from abroad. For example, UCL’s summer English course is a fantastic opportunity, while Edinburgh College also has excellent teaching facilities and an inclusive outlook.

Cultural/Teacher Exchanges

Explore cultural exchange programs that connect teachers with counterparts in other countries. This can involve collaborative projects, sharing teaching strategies, and gaining insights into different education systems.

These tours often include visits to schools, meetings with local educators, and opportunities to explore the educational system of the host country.

Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program is a teacher exchange program sponsored by the US Department of State. It’s a combo of a teacher exchange and study abroad experience where US teachers work abroad and international teachers work in the US. Candidates team teach, observe classes, run workshops, review courses, and work on a long term project. This is a longer program at 3 - 6 months.

Sponsored by the Japan-America Society of Pennsylvania, Keizai Koho  offers two-week summer study tours in Japan with a focus on economics, business, and education. Fellows participate in lectures and visit cultural sites throughout the two weeks. A requirement of the program is to create a lesson plan using what has been learned during the study tour -- a small price to pay for a rich educational experience.

The Korea Society  offers study tours in Korea throughout the year. Most mornings consist of lectures, followed by afternoon cultural outings to temples, palaces, schools, and restaurants. Be forewarned: the program requires extensive walking in hot and humid temperatures. Also, the Korea Society will expect you to create a unit on Korean culture or history upon your return to the U.S.A.

The Goethe-Institute is the Federal Republic of Germany’s cultural institute, active worldwide. They promote the study of German abroad and encourage international cultural exchange.

GEEO  offers discounted group travel for teachers. Founded in 2007, Global Exploration for Educators Organization (GEEO) is a 501c3 non-profit organization that has sent over 3,000 teachers worldwide on adventurous travel programs. GEEO’s teacher travel programs are 5 to 23 days long and are designed and discounted to be exciting and affordable for teachers. The trips are open to all nationalities of K-12 and university educators, administrators, retired educators, and educators’ guests.

Book Bag Trips hosts trips each year that are a combination of fun and PD. They host trips to places like Disney World, Europe, and Africa. They are a larger company, so they host over 10+ trips each summer.

Fellowships

Some organizations offer global teaching fellowships for educators. These programs often involve a combination of teaching, professional development, and cultural immersion.

Program leader for the CIEE Global Navigator program . CIEE's program leader position is designed to assist students in exploring a different culture in more than 30 amazing destinations across the world.

Honing Your Craft With Summer Training

A list of opportunities for summer travel that combines exploration and professional development.

A woman in sunglasses and a hat sitting on a train on a sunny day with the window cracked open, reading a book

While I love my work as an educator, there are times when I think, “How many days until summer break?” For some teachers, summer means thinking about anything but their classroom. For others, summer provides a unique opportunity to make space to consider exciting and innovative aspects of our practice.

And summer does hold many opportunities for professional development for teachers.

In the United States

National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminars : The National Endowment for the Humanities offers a number of summer seminars, from studying Jewish communities in the South to exploring immigrant literature in Florida. The NEH offers stipends to help offset travel and living costs.

I participated in Re-enchanting Nature , a seminar where we hiked and stayed in Helena, Montana, for two weeks while studying writings on nature and conservation and taking classes from poets and Native American educators. We also spent a week of exploration in Yellowstone National Park. It was an experience that not only helped me to better understand the power of storytelling in different settings but pushed me to partner more with our science teachers.

Opal School Summer Symposium : The Opal School, in Portland, Oregon, provides a three-day intensive course to consider creative and cognitive capacities, including hands-on workshops by master teachers, time to collaborate with teachers across the nation, and opportunities to dive deep into cognitive and inquiry-based research. One teacher said, “This solidified the fact that inquiry-based teaching extends far beyond the classroom and is the foundation for creating the world of inventiveness, equity, collaboration, and empathy that we so wish to see.” There are some scholarship opportunities to help cover the cost.

Yellowstone Teacher Workshop : This STEAM program gives teachers the opportunity to discuss, plan, and explore how to incorporate science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics education into their classroom using innovative and cross-curricular methods. All of this is done against the incredible backdrop of Yellowstone National Park. Teachers cover travel costs to Yellowstone, and all meals and lodging are provided.

International Opportunities

Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms Program : Fulbright is a well-known name in academia. This Fulbright program offers multiple collaborative workshops across the globe. The yearlong program concentrates on professional development and provides spring and summer travel components. Program costs are covered.

NOAA Teacher at Sea : Teachers often feel as though we’re captaining a ship—now we can actually live on a ship. The Teacher at Sea program hosts educators for two weeks to one month. On board, teachers help with basic duties, write three or four logs per week about their experience, and share their experience and findings in some way with others. One teacher, Sam Northern, shared, “I gained real-world research experience working with scientists on the Atlantic Ocean. Our mission was to research the hydrographic and planktonic components of the Northeast U.S. Continental Shelf. This 10-day excursion gave me an understanding of the world’s oceans, marine biology, and how real governmental field science is conducted, which I was able to translate to my students.” NOAA covers the cost.

The Goethe-Institut’s Transatlantic Outreach Program : This fellowship allows K–12 teachers to live in Germany for two weeks and connect with German educators about curricula, STEM, and social studies. It also gives educators the chance to explore and understand German culture. Costs are covered.

World Leadership School’s Summer Symposia : The program, run in conjunction with Global Education Benchmark Group , provides “a unique experience for schools to take a deep dive into Mexico/U.S. border relations and the specifics of immigration practices in the U.S.... as well as an opportunity to design, plan, and prepare applicable lessons to use in the classroom in the following school year.” Program costs range from $1,100 to $3,080, but the program offers scholarships.

Working Abroad

For educators who want to work abroad in the summer, an international school can be an option. Teaching abroad combines the opportunity to travel with a chance to hone your practice in an international setting. Websites like GoAbroad and GoOverseas can help you find positions and answer important logistical questions about things like visas.

Self-Guided Opportunities

For teachers who need flexibility, creating your own opportunity may be the best option.

Fund for Teachers : The Fund for Teachers provides financial support for educators to design and participate in self-guided study both in the United States and around the world. One teacher, Sarah Milianta-Laffin, traveled to Greece and Crete for a workshop. She said, “My 2013 fellowship goal was to move my project-based learning focus from STEM to STEAM.... We had fun homework assignments like observing locals in cafes or photographing interesting doors as we walked a neighborhood. It was the first ‘class’ I’d taken that wasn’t sit-and-get professional development.” Milianta-Laffin also noted that “one teacher fellow can ask for [a grant of] up to $5,000, and a team of two or more teachers can ask for up to $10,000.”

Facing History and Ourselves : The program offers engaging webinars and on-demand learning, and Teaching Tolerance has a self-guided learning program that allows teachers to create their own professional development. The options are perfect for teachers who can’t travel or who are traveling on their own and want to use some of that time for professional development.

For other possibilities, see this list  or the opportunities listed at Teaching Traveling .

During the school year, it’s essential that we remain present and grounded in our classrooms and the communities we serve. The beauty of summer is that it allows us to step out of the spaces we so carefully cultivate so that we can rejuvenate and cultivate ourselves.

Professional Development for Teachers: 8 FREE Travel Programs!

Teaching Traveling: Curious about grants for teachers to do educational tours and professional development travel?

Let’s get some tips from expert, amanda smith amanda, tell us about your background..

Professional development for teachers in China.

Amanda:  I grew up in a family where the only people who had traveled abroad had done so through the military. When I returned to Eastern North Carolina to teach High School social studies after college, I was teaching students with very limited experience outside of their community.

I was fortunate to have participated in a study abroad program during college where I not only got the traveling bug, but I was given the confidence and skills to know that travel was possible.

Over the last ten years I have been able to participate in a wide variety of professional development programs in the United States and abroad. My experiences have enriched my teaching and allowed me to open up a world of possibilities to my students and other teachers.

Professional development Civil Rights Educators Institute in front of Little Rock Central High School.

TT: Amazing! Tell us more about funded travel professional development opportunities.

A:  Sure! Here is a list of funded teacher travel programs that I have done and recommend.

Rohwer Internment Camp in Arkansas.

1. National Park Service’s Civil Rights Educator Institute:

I attended a week-long institute in Little Rock, Arkansas in July 2018 sponsored by the Central High School National Historic Site. In addition to touring historic sites related to the Civil Rights Movement, we got a chance to visit Rohwer Japanese-Internment Camp.

It was eye opening to talk with local people like the Little Rock Nine Elizabeth Eckford and Minnijean Brown to learn how their lives had been shaped by their experiences at Central High School.

2. National Consortium for Teaching about Asia Study Tour :

I started participating in the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia’s online book groups as a way to expand my knowledge about Chinese history. I was able to use the professional development credits that I earned from the book groups to apply for the 2018 Study Tour in China and Taiwan sponsored by the University of Southern California US-China Institute.

I spent two and half weeks with teachers from across the United States visiting historical sites, schools, business, and restaurants that enhanced my understanding of China and Taiwan’s culture.

A classroom in Kaohsiung, Taiwan High School.

3. National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Institutes and Landmark Seminars :

I have been fortunate to attend several National Endowment for the Humanities’ institutes and landmark seminars. Each experience has provided me with opportunities to visit places and meet people that I could never have done on my own.

Learning ranged from spending a week learning about the Gullah/Geechee culture on the coast of Georgia to spending three weeks at Crow Canyon Archeology Center in Colorado learning about Ancient Puebloan history and modern American Indian culture.

Civil rights professional development seminar

4. Library of Congress Summer Teacher Institute :

Some federal government agencies provide professional development opportunities. I attended a week-long Library of Congress summer teacher institute in 2017 which provides training on teaching with primary sources in their collections.

5. Bridging Cultures:

Each year the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign invites American teachers to spend a week interacting with teachers from over 21 countries who are studying at the university as part of the Fulbright program. It is a great opportunity to learn about educational systems around the world.

Professional development for teachers in Taiwan.

6. Transatlantic Outreach Program (TOP) :

In 2015, I was selected to spend two-week traveling in Germany as part of the Transatlantic Outreach Program . Each group gets a specialized itinerary which provides insights into modern Germany’s schools, businesses, and culture.

7. George Washington Teacher Institute Residential Programs :

Throughout the year Mount Vernon offers week-long teaching institutes on topics related to George Washington. The institute has sessions led by world class historians, but it is hard to beat the opportunity to sit on George Washington’s porch and enjoy his view of the Potomac river.

Professional development: Library of Congress Teacher institute.

8. Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History :

Teachers at affiliate school programs can participate in week-long seminars on various topics at universities across the United States. I attended the seminar on Women’s Rights in the United States at Duke University in 2010.

TT: Thank you for that wonderful list of professional development fabulousness! How do you find these travel opportunities?

Civil rights professional development

A: I learned during my first national level professional learning and development experience that my fellow participants were a rich resource for teacher travel opportunities. I would hear about their experiences and make list of programs to research.

A few years ago, I decide to turn my list of professional development programs in a Facebook group called “Teachers Travel for Free”. It is simply a database where teachers can learn about different travel opportunities. I feel that it is important to share what I have learned with other teachers.

Enjoying a Hot Pot restaurant in China.

TT:  Wonderful. So, how did you find the money to fund your professional development travel?

A: Most of the programs that I have participated in over the years cover the cost of traveling. My school system doesn’t have a lot of money for professional development for teachers , so I look for programs that allow teachers to participate for free or at a cost that I can afford.

I have also arranged to attend programs right after each other so that I can save on travel costs. For instance, I might attend one program and then travel directly to another program, so I can combine travel stipends. This approach requires planning and some luck that the dates will work out.

Study tour in China.

TT: Great advice. Now, tell us one moment from your travels that was particularly powerful.

A:  My most memorable travel moments are usually the result of interacting with local people. The University of Southern California US-China Institute arrange for us to meet Taiwan Legislator Lin Li-Chan.

University of Southern California US-China Institute Study Tour

Lin was born in Cambodia where her family sold her as a bride to a Taiwanese husband. She had to overcome a lot of obstacles to become the first immigrant to win a seat in the Taiwanese legislature. She is using her position to help immigrants, including developing a literacy program which provides children’s books in multiple languages.

She shared with us how her experience of not being able to help her two children with homework led her to develop the book series. Meeting Legislator Lin Li-Chan was a powerful experience which I’m sure all the teachers on the trip will never forget.

Educational tours for teachers

TT: Deeply inspiring. How have your travels impacted you in your career, and as a person?

A:  Traveling has made me more aware of the resources available to teachers. I decided to go back to school to get my master’s degree in Public History with the concentration in museums after I noticed how much more engaged people are in history when they experience something first-hand.

I am currently working for Fulton County Public Schools in Georgia as a Museum Teaching Specialist. My job is to develop school programs and other resources that provide students with authentic learning experiences in all subjects.

Educational tour in Xi'an, China, watching brush painting

TT: Fantastic. What advice do you have for teachers who are dreaming of travel?

A:  There are great opportunities available for professional development for teachers , but it does take work to find these programs and submit applications. You will get rejected sometimes, but persistence pays off.

Finding fellow teachers or other professionals who can give you advice is a must. Don’t forget the ultimate reason why we travel is to bring these experiences back to our students.

Spending time with Fan Guoqi and his family was a highlight of my trip as well.

Teaching English abroad is an exciting adventure that allows English speakers to travel the world while earning an income. However, most teaching jobs require teachers to sign a contract for a semester or an entire academic year. But if you’re searching for a more short-term experience, 6-12 months may not sound too appealing!

Thankfully, there are many summer TEFL jobs available around the world for those itching to teach abroad for a shorter period of time. Not only that, these summer teaching opportunities are an excellent way for already established teachers to earn extra income during school holidays.

Whether you're a TEFL teacher seeking a short-term opportunity or interested in earning extra money during school break, here are the best summer TEFL jobs to consider.

Job Requirements to Teach English Abroad

First things first, if you’re new to teaching abroad it’s essential to check your eligibility. The requirements to teach English abroad for the summer versus a semester or year are often the same. You typically need to:

  • Be a native English speaker or have proof of near-native speaking ability.
  • Have a reputable TEFL certificate with at least 120 hours of quality training. CIEE's 150-Hour TEFL Certificate course is both internationally recognized and valid for life.
  • Have a Bachelor's degree , although some summer ESL jobs hire college students and teachers without college degrees .
  • Have relevant teaching experience , although it’s not always required.

When to Apply to Summer TEFL Jobs

Most summer employment is offered from June to August, while students are on summer vacation. But if you wish to teach abroad for the summer, you actually need to begin your job search much earlier in the year.

Many schools, camps, and language centers post summer openings in January, February, and early spring, hiring teachers shortly after. It’s not impossible to find last-minute job openings for the summer months, although you'll likely have fewer opportunities to choose from.

Where to Find Summer TEFL Jobs

When searching for teaching jobs for the summer, the most common places to look are directly on school and language center websites, on ESL job boards, and through teach abroad programs or recruiters.

Here are some helpful resources to help you kickstart your TEFL job hunt:

  • Teach Abroad Programs and TEFL Providers: CIEE Teach Abroad , The Cultural Exchange Project
  • Directly on school and language center websites: EF , Berlitz , Maximo Nivel , International House
  • TEFL Job Boards: Dave’s ESL , GoOverseas.com
  • TEFL and teacher recruiters: SeekTeachers

Be careful when responding to job listings online and always do your research before sharing personal information to avoid scams.

How much can you earn as a TEFL teacher in the summer?

As a summer English teacher, your salary depends heavily on the type of employment and your qualifications. However, many TEFL teachers can expect to earn between $200-$400 per week when working summer-specific teaching jobs.

7 Best Summer TEFL Jobs

Now that the basics are out of the way, here are some of the best TEFL summer jobs.

1. Summer English Camps

There are many summer English camps scattered around the world that hire seasonal teachers, especially in Europe. These camps typically run for two or three months in the summer and are a place for primary and secondary students to practice their English while engaging in fun summer camp activities.

As a summer camp English counselor, you're typically responsible for lesson planning, leading camp activities, and ensuring participants' safety. Some well-known summer camps include The English Camp Company , The American Village , TECS , and The International Camp Network . Summer camp counselors are typically paid $200-$300 per week and are provided room and board to supplement their income.

2. Teach English Online

Teaching English online is an excellent opportunity to earn money during the summer from wherever you are. You need to meet the main job requirements to be an English teacher, plus you must own a computer with a webcam and have access to a quiet space with WiFi.

Many online teaching platforms hire English teachers on an ongoing basis, offering immense flexibility in your job search. And as an online English teacher, you can typically create your own schedule and choose to teach anywhere in the world as a digital nomad . You can earn between $8-$25 per hour teaching English online.

3. Teach Abroad Programs and Recruiters

Although less common than teach abroad programs that hire teachers for a semester or entire academic year, there are some opportunities for summer-only teach abroad programs. Additionally, TEFL providers may know of summer teaching opportunities, so it's worth inquiring.

Teach abroad programs often charge a fee but can provide applicants with a much-needed helping hand throughout the application and moving abroad process.

4. English Homestay Tutor or Au Pair

Those with teaching experience should also consider applying to be an English homestay tutor or au pair.

6. Summer TEFL Camp Coordinator

Those with previous teaching experience are also eligible to apply to be TEFL camp coordinators. As a TEFL camp coordinator, you're in a mid-management position that requires you to oversee a team of TEFL camp counselors.

Additional responsibilities typically include planning language-focused camp activities, teaching lessons, and more. These positions pay slightly more than a TEFL counselor, and current job openings can be found directly on the English camp's website.

7. Tutor Privately

Lastly, TEFL teachers can start their own businesses as private tutors.

Like driving but not interested in giving people rides? DoorDash lets you have food as your passenger. Someone orders food from a restaurant, and you pick it up and deliver it to them. Simple as that. And if you’re a foodie, there’s an extra perk: Since you’re not delivering food from one place, you’re likely to learn about up-and-coming or hidden-gem spots in your city. Use some of the extra money you make to treat yourself to a good meal!

How does working from home in your PJs sound? Rev is a company that hires people to transcribe or caption audio—from the comfort of their own home. You’ll be asked to take an English and grammar quiz and submit a sample transcription. Once you pass, you can start earning. Summertime means amusement park time! Families are on vacation, and tourists are aplenty. If you live near a Six Flags park, take advantage and nab a seasonal job. If there’s not a Six Flags near you, look into local baseball stadiums or concert venues to inquire about selling concessions or tickets.

If you’re good at fixing things or completing odd jobs—doing grocery shopping, assembling furniture, helping someone move houses or organize their pantry— Task Rabbit is the site for you. Think about it this way: All the skills that aren’t on your resume (labeling bins, unpacking and packing your classroom each year) are now key money-making skills.

How well do you know your city? If you have tourists in your area, use Indeed to find summer tour guide positions! You can do walking tours, biking tours—even ghost town tours! Get exercise and meet new people this summer with a job as a tour guide.

It doesn’t matter if you want to be on the road one day a week or 24/7. It’s a great way to make money (you can earn up to $30 per hour during peak times) while still doing all the things that make summer vacation great, like sleeping in and traveling!

Teach English Abroad in Summer 2024 [Summer Teaching Job Abroad Ideas]

So, you're interested in teaching English abroad this summer? Great! There are certainly opportunities around the world for you to find some TEFL summer jobs in 2024.

How to Find Your Summer Teaching Jobs Abroad

Can i teach english abroad for a summer.

You can teach English abroad in the summer. However, options will be more limited than if you were looking to teach English abroad for a year or even for 6 months. Except for some short-term contract work, most language schools look to hire full-time teachers for 10-12 month contracts.

What are My Teach Abroad Options for Summer 2024?

Most short-term opportunities for English teachers in the summer will be either in summer camps or in a volunteer capacity.

Teach English Abroad in Summer Language Camps

Volunteer as an english teacher abroad for the summer.

Teaching English abroad in the summer as a volunteer or at a summer camp may not pay much (if anything at all), but you can find great opportunities to spend a couple of months abroad and any experience you gain will be a great addition to your resume, especially if you decide to teach English abroad again at a later date.

Let's look at summer camps and volunteering options in more detail:

Teaching English Abroad in Summer Language Camps

Summer language camps in Europe, Latin America and Asia offer 1-2 month opportunities to teach English for school-aged children and university students (in Asia). These opportunities are great for those looking for shorter stints overseas as well as those who enjoy working outdoors with children.

ITA alumna Michelle shares a day in her life teaching at a Summer Camp in Russia.

Different Types of Summer Camps that Hire English Teachers in 2024

Overnight "away" camps.

This is what most Americans envision when they think of a "summer camp." Students/campers typically live in the woods in cabins, eat in a mess tent, and spend a good part of the day playing sports, swimming in a lake and engaging in other recreational activities. At English language camps in Europe, English language classes are also taught several hours a day, but the point is that campers and students are immersed in an English-only environment 24/7.

All activities including sports, crafts, outings, dining, horseback riding, etc. are conducted in English and are led by English speakers ( TEFL certified teachers are typically preferred). They may be coined an "English Village" or "American Village".

There are similar camps in the US, UK and Canada for French and Spanish children and adolescents. In such camps, English teachers serve as counselors as well. The students or campers typically attend such camps for at least 2 weeks at a time and many stay for several sessions. Ages typically range from 8-18.

These camps offer similar activities and English classes as away camps but they are typically operated in more urban environments. A typical day will run from 8 am-5 pm and campers usually return home in the evening. English teachers and counselors usually live in an apartment in the city where the camp is held.

University Campus

These camps are more common in Asia - particularly in China - where the "camp" is really at a university campus. English teachers live in the dorms. The students are usually college students but may be younger in some cases.

Summer Camp Croatia TEFL

Here are some additional points regarding summer camp opportunities for English teachers:

  • Europe offers the most summer camp English teaching positions, particularly in Spain , Italy , France , and Germany .
  • Most camps in Europe hire English teachers locally in-country. However, some camps will recruit internationally and interview in advance, typically during late winter and spring. Camps give first dibs to the current English teachers in Europe as they have experience and finish their local contracts in June. Examples of camps that interview include the American Village camps in France and ACLE in Italy.
  • Most language camps that hire English teachers in Europe are looking to hire English teachers and counselors between 20–30 years of age .  Language Camps in Asia tend to hire English teachers into their mid-30s, while volunteer options tend to accept participants into their 50s.
  • Most English teachers who work at summer camps are provided room and board, plus a modest stipend (perhaps the equivalent of $200-$300 a week). There are also volunteer opportunities teaching English abroad in summer camps.
  • Many summer positions involve sports, arts and other educational and recreational activities in addition to teaching English in a classroom setting. In other instances, teachers are hired solely to teach English classes.

summer travel for teachers 2023

In addition to summer camps, to teach English abroad in the summer of 2024, you can also find short-term TEFL jobs by volunteering .

  • Non-governmental organizations, including charitable organizations and faith-based groups, often recruit TEFL / TESOL teachers to teach English abroad.
  • Volunteering offers opportunities to work in some regions of the world where paid opportunities are extremely limited or non-existent, including India, Nepal, many Sub-Saharan African nations, and poorer nations in Latin America and Southeast Asia.
  • Many volunteer opportunities are short-term (1 week – 2 months), which is ideal for those looking to go abroad for a summer.
  • Expect to incur all costs associated with flights and travel, and in many cases for accommodation as well as many volunteering opportunities are found in poorer Third World nations. Sometimes charitable organizations such as faith-based groups may absorb your costs.
  • Work visas are not typically required for volunteer programs, but you may encounter some exceptions.

Summer TEFL Courses to Be Trained as an English Teacher

If you are keen to begin your career as an international English teacher, but only have a summer to spare, you might consider spending your summer gaining your qualification and a bit of hands-on teaching experience through a four-week TEFL certification course overseas . This will provide you with an opportunity to gain an internationally accredited TEFL certification while spending four weeks in a great international location (and perhaps engaging in some travel on the side). You will also have an opportunity to gain hands-on student teaching experience by engaging in practice teaching with local ESL students.

Typical examples:

Many of our students will either take a 4-week TEFL course abroad for this summer in Europe (such as France, Spain, Italy), in the US, or in Latin America (such as Costa Rica) and teach abroad the next summer.

Other students will take an online TEFL course in advance so they can apply in December, January, February and March for opportunities the following summer.

If you choose to get TEFL certified with International TEFL Academy, bear in mind that your TEFL certification does not expire and you will enjoy lifetime job search guidance to assist you in lining up both summer and longer-term opportunities to teach English abroad in the future.

Our TEFL graduates all receive an extensive summer camp directory to assist them in finding paid and volunteer English teaching positions in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

"If you are willing and ready to put your whole heart into this job, be full of energy, and play by the camp’s rules then you will have the best summer of your life.' - ITA alumna Amelia Perri | Camp California, Croatia

45 Best Teacher Gift Ideas of 2024, According to Actual Teachers

Teachers tell us what they really want from students as an end-of-year gift.

the personalized teacher stamp and succlent pots are two good housekeeping picks for best teacher gifts

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

To find out, more than 40 teachers were surveyed for this story about what gifts teachers like best . The pool of respondents were all educators, either currently working or retired, who taught different grade levels and different schools across the country. They were promised that their names wouldn't be used so as not to offend any well meaning families who missed the mark. That way, they could really open up about what they believed were the best teacher gifts to get from students.

Something almost all of the teachers shared: They really do believe that it's the thought that counts, and notes, handwritten letters, handmade items or home-baked goodies were really valued. But we know that, as families, they deserve a little something extra to go with all of those well wishes.

So, what to get? Though their schools, locations, subjects and experiences may be different, our teacher agreed on one thing: Gift cards make the best teacher gifts. They really do want them, and the more versatile the cards are (Amazon, Target and Visa were the most requested), the better. And, since some families don't feel comfortable giving gift cards — or like to give something small with a gift card — we've come up with more teacher-approved recommendations below.

Some guiding hints from the respondents: It helps to get to know your teacher and their preferences personally. For every educator that said they loved candy, there was another who said if they didn't see another Godiva box, it would be too soon. (Food, coffee, mugs, candles and wine were the most divisive, showing up on both the "most wanted" and "least wanted" lists.) Teachers warned to steer clear of anything that really requires you to know their personal taste, like jewelry or fragrances, and they also agreed that they'd rather get something personalized with their names on it than something with an apple that just says "teacher."

With all that in mind, these are the gifts that our panel of teachers said are most likely to make educators very happy.

Amazon Gift Card

Amazon Gift Card

An Amazon gift card was far-and-away the most requested gift on our teachers' lists. And it makes sense: You're giving them what they want most — something they can pick out themselves. This one even comes in its own gift box, and all you have to do is add a thoughtful note.

Rechargeable Hand Warmer

Rechargeable Hand Warmer

These are wonderful for anyone who has crossing-guard duty or needs to supervise recess. They can last up to four hours on a single charge, and they come in several colors and patterns.

'Why You're the Best Teacher Ever' Journal

'Why You're the Best Teacher Ever' Journal

Lots of teachers say that what they want most, above gifts, are hand-written notes. But if your student finds it hard to get the words out, this journal helps them make it easy by offering fill-in-the-blanks that'll get the inspiration flowing. The class can even work on it together and make it a group gift.

Rifle Paper Co. Garden Party Writing Pencils

Rifle Paper Co. Garden Party Writing Pencils

Teachers told us they're always in need of a supply refresh. Instead of getting them a box of the yellow No. 2s, make their desks look like a springtime festival with this flowery pencil set.

Stanley Quencher H2.0 FlowState Tumbler

Stanley Quencher H2.0 FlowState Tumbler

The same travel tumbler that's used en masse by students last is also a hit with their teachers. And, with the ability to hold a whipping 40 oz of liquid, we get it. The insulation keeps beverages hot or cold, which is helpful for a teacher that has to stand up and talk in front of a class all day.

Mesh Zipper Pouch Set

Mesh Zipper Pouch Set

If you feel sheepish about giving a gift card by itself, you can always put it in something useful, like these color-coded zipper mesh pouches — which has a million uses. They come in a set of 24, so you'll have enough for several teachers and enough left over to organize yourself, too.

Personalized Teacher Desk Plate

Personalized Teacher Desk Plate

Perfect for a reading or English teacher, these name plates are made from repurposed Scrabble tiles. You can also add in an apple, star or heart embellishment in the beginning. It's a great just-a-little-something that won't take over their whole desk.

Bath & Body Works PocketBac Hand Sanitizer Set

Bath & Body Works PocketBac Hand Sanitizer Set

Teachers more than most need to keep sanitizing their hands. With this set of 10, they can stash sanitizer in every corner of the classroom — plus their bag and car. You can even get them a fun holder that'll clip to their bag.

Teacher Stamp

Teacher Stamp

After gift cards, personalized items came up the most often as a much-wanted gift. So teachers will delight in their very own stamps, created to look just like them, with their hairstyle, facial hair, glasses and other accessories. You can get them for male teachers and female teachers , and you can also personalize the text.

Molecule Socks

Molecule Socks

These are especially good for any STEM teachers out there. The molecule presented there is extremely appropriate for teachers — it's caffeine, something many educators need to get going in the morning.

Personalized Stationery

Personalized Stationery

When a classroom-app note just won't do, they'll appreciate having their own stack of personalized "From the Desk Of" notecards. This one comes with a choice of yellow, green or red apple, but if you don't want to go with the apple motif, you can opt for the No. 2 pencil design .

Water Bottle Pouch

Water Bottle Pouch

Another ingenious place to stash a gift card? Inside one of these pouches. They're made to go around a travel water cup like the Stanley Quencher, so that Teach can carry their IDs and keys and stay one-hand-free. But even if they don't have a beverage tumbler, there are a million places to clip this in where it'll be useful.

Personalized Zippered Tote

Personalized Zippered Tote

Our teachers said they'd much rather have something with their name on it than something that said, "World's Greatest Teacher." This tote bag has outside mesh pockets for easy access and an optional interior organizer. If you really want to be a teacher's pet, you can fill it with items like tissues , sanitizing wipes and pencils — supplies that are always in demand.

Succulent Pots

Succulent Pots

While our teachers asked for desk plants, they said nothing about the pots they come in. This two-pack features pots with cute messages designed to make teachers' hearts melt. All you have to do is get a succulent or air plant to pop in it, and you're good to go.

LEGO Icons Flower Bouquet Building Set

LEGO Icons Flower Bouquet Building Set

If you know your teacher is into LEGO, the only thing better than getting them a real bouquet of flowers is getting them one they can build out of LEGO. If this set is too extensive, there are also LEGO roses , daffodils or lotus flowers for less than $20.

Personalized Welcome Sign

Personalized Welcome Sign

Elementary school teachers in particular often have to decorate their rooms every year. Help them out with this sweet sign that comes in three designs, and can be personalized with their name.

Personalized Journal

Personalized Journal

From lesson plans to to-do lists to whatever musings enter their heads, teachers can always stand to have a notebook on-hand. And, with a laser-engraved design, they'll always know which notebook is theirs. There are also many different designs and styles to choose from.

Personalized Crayon Teacher Shirt

Personalized Crayon Teacher Shirt

Some teachers requested school merch or school-store swag as a gift; if that's not available, this is the next best thing. It comes in about a dozen colors and a couple different styles, and you can get it in sizes from XS to 2XL.

Take Note Permanent Marker Set

Take Note Permanent Marker Set

Markers were another school supply our teachers said they were in dire need of, and these aren't your old, washable kiddie makers. They're permanent, but with a fine point and in a rainbow of colors, which makes them useful for grading, labeling, writing notes and tackling other artsy projects.

Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies

Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies

A lot of our teachers said they really appreciated in when someone sent in a batch of handmade baked goods. If you're not a wiz in the kitchen, this is the next best thing. The box comes with two dozen cookies, and you warm them before you eat them so they feel like they came right out of the oven.

GSA has adjusted all POV mileage reimbursement rates effective January 1, 2024.

Airplane nautical miles (NMs) should be converted into statute miles (SMs) or regular miles when submitting a voucher using the formula (1 NM equals 1.15077945 SMs).

For calculating the mileage difference between airports, please visit the U.S. Department of Transportation's Inter-Airport Distance website.

Program Overview

New Middle School Schedule: Monday to Thursday, 8:00am to 4:00pm July 2-August 8

Summer Rising 2024 is a partnership between New York City Public Schools and the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD). Summer Rising is free and available to all NYC students in grades K-8, pending seat availability.

Students in Summer Rising will have access to both academic and enrichment programming over the course of the day, including field trips, arts activities, and outdoor recreation. Programs will planned and operated collaboratively by school principals and community-based organizations (CBOs). The environment will be safe and supportive with staff prepared to respond to children’s social and emotional needs. Breakfast, lunch, and snack will be served.

A typical day for students in grades K–8 will include a mix of academic support, social emotional learning, and enrichment activities. Academics will be provided by licensed teachers in the morning. Enrichment activities (such as art, sports, and play) will be led by CBO staff in the afternoons and on Fridays. CBOs will also facilitate enrichment in the morning, alongside academics, for K-5 programs. Students with disabilities who may require additional supports to participate in programming, such as a paraprofessional, will receive those supports as needed.

Multilingual learners/English language learners (MLs/ELLs) in grades K-8 participating in Summer Rising will engage in culturally responsive and student-centered academic opportunities in the morning and participate in afternoon enrichment sessions facilitated by trusted community-based organizations. Additionally, in the morning, MLs/ELLs will receive instruction targeting language and literacy development to support them with grade-level content. English as a New Language (ENL) teachers can provide MLs/ELLs with support through various instructional models, including small-group instruction or one-to-one support for MLs/ELLs.

Please Note: Students who enroll in a Summer Rising seat are accessing a seat for the hours above dependent on their grade or program. Families with scheduling concerns around full-day attendance should contact their CBO once placed into a program.

*Students with 12-month IEPs will have the option to participate in DYCD-led extended day enrichment hours (until 6pm) and programming through August 8, 2024 (6–8 students) and August 16, 2024 (K–5 students). Families interested in this extended day enrichment should apply via the application portal.

Find a Summer Rising Program

  • Use this table to search for programs and summer locations connected to your home school.

Students with Disabilities

Accommodations.

Students who receive a health paraprofessional or nurse during the school year pursuant to an IEP or 504 Plan will receive those services throughout the Summer Rising day. Students who have a behavioral paraprofessional will receive this support during the academic portion of the day and will receive additional support as needed during enrichment activities. The student’s home school will prepare a Summer Rising Accommodation Plan that will be given to the student’s parent and the student’s Summer Rising site before Summer Rising begins.

Enrollment for Students in 12-Month IEP Programs

Students in D75, Extended School Year (ESY), or Autism programming over the summer can choose to participate only in their IEP programming (until 2:30pm for D75, 2:00pm for ESY and 12pm for Autism Programs) or IEP programming plus CBO-led extended-day enrichment until 6pm (or 4pm for Middle School). Please review these important application details:

If a family does not want extended day enrichment for their child, and their child will only be participating in Autism programming (until 12pm) or D75/ESY programming, the family should contact their child's school instead of using the application portal.

If a family wants to participate in IEP programming and extended-day enrichment (in other words, programming until 6pm (or 4pm for Middle School)), they should use the application portal. Families in Autism, ESY, and D75 programming will have priority for seats in Summer Rising. Please note that for Middle School Students, there is no CBO led programming on Fridays.

Autism - Horizon or Nest students and ESY students: Families can choose between any of the Summer Rising CBO program(s) operating at the student’s IEP program site.

D75 students: D75 schools often operate at more than one location over the summer. In the portal, families of D75 students will see the locations where their home school is operating where there is also enrichment programming until 6pm (or 4pm for Middle School students). If a student’s morning location is one of the available options, families should rank the program(s) within that location, so the student can stay at the same site all day.

  • If the student’s morning location is not one of the available options, families can choose between the program(s) and site(s) listed, and NYC Public Schools will aim to provide an alternate 2:30pm bus drop-off to that site.

For families interested in CBO-led extended-day enrichment until 6pm for elementary students , please note:

  • Elementary Students who are staying until 6pm and are eligible for transportation will have access to pre-paid rideshare services, where a family member can take a pre-paid rideshare to pick up their child, and then a pre-paid rideshare home with their child. School buses will not be available at 6pm.
  • ASD elementary school students who sign up for 8am-6pm programming can either take a bus home at 3pm (the latest time NYC Public Schools buses run) or participate in rideshare at 6pm.

Transportation

NYC Public Schools and DYCD are committed to ensuring students have a safe way to and from Summer Rising. This summer, eligible students will receive busing daily from July 2 through August 8, arriving at their program at approximately 8am and leaving their program by no later than 3PM. (Students in D75 and ESY programming will receive busing for the duration of their IEP program: July 2–August 12 for ESY and July 3–August 13 for D75). Eligible students must have enrolled in summer programming by May 13 in order to receive a bus route in time for July 2.

Students eligible for busing transportation include:

  • Students with IEPs that recommend busing
  • Students with a 504 accommodation that mandates busing
  • Students in temporary housing, in grades K to 6, residing more than 0.5 mile away from their summer site who requested and were found eligible for busing during the 10-month school year, either through an exception or through the DHS CARES transportation preference request
  • Students in foster care, in grades K to 6, residing more than 0.5 mile away from their summer site who requested and were found eligible for busing during the 10-month school year through an exception
  • Any other student who requested an exception for transportation and were found eligible for busing during the 10-month school year ( For eligible students, families, NYC Public Schools and supporting shelter staff can request a new exception during the Summer Rising term through SupportHub if a new transportation request is needed )
  • Students who received stop-to-school busing during the school year and remain grade and distance eligible based on the location of their summer site (you can find grade and distance eligibility on the transportation eligibility page )
  • Students in grades K–6 who are not grade and distance eligible during the school year and whose site is not open for summer will receive busing only from their 10-month site to their Summer Rising site if the two are more than half a mile apart.

Students who were assigned MetroCards during the school year or become eligible based on the distance of their Summer Rising site can receive a MetroCard at their summer site and can use these MetroCards to go to and from Summer Rising at the program start and end times (8AM and 6PM). 6PM busing will not be available this summer; however, families of eligible students (Students in Temporary Housing, Students in Foster Care, and students who receive curb-to-school busing and who are signed up for programming until 6PM) will have access to a MetroCard upon request or pre-paid rideshare, similar to last year.

Please Note: Students accepted during the wait-list phase may not receive busing on the first day. Families should reach out to their school to determine the date that busing will begin. The PIC’s delegated staff should reach out to the district transportation liaison for eligible students requiring transportation. Metro cards will be available upon request.

TSA is prepared for a busy spring break travel season, expects travel volumes at nearly 6% above 2023

WASHINGTON – As spring break travelers prepare for their vacation getaways, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is up for the challenge and is offering practical tips to help them plan for a smooth journey as they go through the security checkpoint and take to the skies. The busy peak spring break travel season begins around March 7 and continues through March 25.

“TSA screened a record number of passengers in 2023, and we expect that trend to continue this year,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. “So far in 2024, travel volumes are trending at nearly 6% above the same period in 2023. We always work closely with our airline and airport partners to plan for and meet the increasing travel demand while doing our best to maintain our wait times of 30 minutes or less in standard lanes and 10 minutes or less in TSA PreCheck ® lanes.”

TSA knows travelers put a lot of time and effort into planning the perfect spring break getaway, so we are providing the following tips and tricks to help make sure your special trip gets off to a great start:

Pack smart and remember the 3-1-1 rule. Make sure to start with an empty bag to avoid packing any prohibited items. If you’re heading to the beach, you may wonder how to pack your sunscreen. Any liquids, sunscreen containers and alcohol over 3.4 ounces must be packed in a checked bag. Liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes are allowed in carry-on bags as long as each item is 3.4 ounces or less and placed in one quart-sized bag. Each passenger is limited to one quart-size bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes.

Unloaded firearms must be packed in a locked, hard-sided case in checked baggage only and must be declared to the airline. Travelers who bring firearms or other weapons to the security checkpoint face consequences . To avoid delays, passengers should search TSA’s “ What Can I Bring? ” webpage.

Be checkpoint ready and bring a valid ID. Arrive at the checkpoint with a mobile or printed boarding pass and readily available valid ID . Listen closely to and follow instructions from TSA officers for guidance through the screening process. At many checkpoints, you may be asked to insert your physical ID into one of our Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) units, where a boarding pass is not needed. Nearly 30 airports have a second generation of CAT, called CAT-2, which adds a camera with optional facial recognition technology and smartphone reader. This technology better detects fraudulent IDs. Passengers who do not want their photos taken may ask the TSA officer for a manual ID check without losing their place in line. For more information on how TSA is using facial recognition technology, see our TSA Facial Recognition Technology Fact Sheet . Starting May 7, 2025, every air traveler 18 years of age and older must have a REAL ID -compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the United States. 2024 is a good time to get your REAL ID. Contact your state DMV for more information.

Enroll in TSA PreCheck ® . Enjoy the benefits of faster checkpoint screening with a TSA PreCheck membership. Traveling with kids? Teenagers aged 17 and under may accompany TSA PreCheck-enrolled parents or guardians through TSA PreCheck screening lanes when traveling on the same reservation and when the TSA PreCheck indicator appears on the teen’s boarding pass. Children 12 and under may still accompany an enrolled parent or guardian through the TSA PreCheck lanes any time, without restriction. Most new enrollees receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) within five days, and membership lasts for five years. TSA PreCheck starts at $78 for a five-year membership. That’s about $15.60 per year. Online renewals are $70. Don’t delay. Enroll in TSA PreCheck today.

Arrive early and please be patient. Spring break travelers should give themselves plenty of time to account for traffic, parking, rental car returns, airline check-in, security screening and making any airport purchases before boarding a flight. The airport environment can be stressful. Remain patient, and remember everyone around you is also on their own journey. Passengers who engage in unruly behavior at the checkpoint, the gate area or inflight may face substantial penalties and possible prosecution on criminal charges.

Call ahead to request passenger support. Travelers or families of passengers with disabilities and/or medical conditions may call the TSA Cares helpline toll-free at 855-787-2227 with any questions about screening procedures and to find out what to expect at the security checkpoint. If you call at least 72 hours prior to travel, TSA Cares also arranges assistance at the checkpoint for travelers with specific needs. For more information, visit the TSA Cares website .

Ask TSA before you travel. Contact TSA over social media by sending a message to @AskTSA on X or Facebook Messenger. Passengers may also send a text directly to 275-872 (“AskTSA”) on any mobile device. An automated virtual assistant is available 24/7 to answer commonly asked questions, and AskTSA staff are available 365 days a year from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET for more complicated questions. Travelers may also reach the TSA Contact Center at 866-289-9673 from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET on weekends/holidays. An automated service is available 24/7.

TSA encourages all passengers to remain vigilant. If You See Something. Say Something ® . Those traveling abroad for spring break should check the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Know Before You Go page to learn about required documentation.

Opening Reception: 2024 Nathan Cummings Exhibition

summer travel for teachers 2023

Event description

  • Arts and entertainment
  • Open to the public

Harry Wood Gallery presents the 2024 Nathan Cummings Exhibition.

The Nathan Cummings Graduate Summer Travel Award was established by the Nathan Cummings Foundation to give talented visual artists in the ASU School of Art the experience of the Grand Tour, a tradition in the education of the whole person. For the visual artist, this experience is considered a necessity, and the role it plays in the life of a young artist is well documented in modern history.

This “application exhibition” showcases the artwork of those students who apply from various disciplines and includes a statement of intent. Artists are meant to create proposals for summer travel to further their artistic visions and expand their worldview in relation to their particular craft and specific concentration.

After a review of the work and proposals, ASU faculty members choose who will be awarded travel grants for this summer to their proposed locations. Awardees will be announced after the exhibition closes and votes are tabulated.

Participating artists: Ari Barley, Camila de Andrade Bianchi, Mehrdad Mirzaie, Wabwila Mugala, Nicole Ponsart, li rothrock, Liza Stout, Caitlyn Swift
