Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is in India for a three-day visit as the company hosted its Future Decoded summit in two legs in Mumbai and Bengaluru.
On day one in Mumbai, at the CEO Summit, Satya addressed a gathering of over 150 industry leaders. He also met with leaders from Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance and manufacturing industries on the sidelines of the summit. On day two in Bengaluru, at the Tech Summit, Satya addressed a gathering of over 700 technologists, developers, and industry leaders.
The event was live-streamed across 7 tech campuses and 21 satellite campuses for over 35,000 campus attendees and was streamed online and via a leading television broadcaster for an estimated 700,000 viewers.
On the third day, Satya met a gathering of over 250 students and educators at the Young Innovators Summit organized by Microsoft India in Delhi. In a conversation with Anant Maheshwari, President, Microsoft India, Satya spoke about the role that technology will play in transforming the education ecosystem over the next decade and outlined the opportunity students have today to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems with technology.
While in Delhi, Satya Nadella also met Ravishankar Prasad, the Minister of Communications, Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India as well as Piyush Goyal, the Minister of Commerce & Industry.
Tech Capability
In his keynote, Satya mentioned that Microsoft was committed not only to expand access to technology but also to help organizations of all sizes build their own digital capability. This would help every organization create more independence – not dependence on Microsoft – as their own tech company and with their own tech capability.
“Whenever I speak to CEOs in other industries, I always say you will never be cool by association. Just because you do a press release with us you are not going to be cool. You have to build your own tech capability and solutions that are inclusive.” – Satya Nadella
Laying out his vision for tech intensity as a driver for economic growth, he urged the gathering of India’s top business leaders to ensure everyone benefits from this growth.
Digital India
Before Satya Nadella’s keynote in Mumbai, Anant Maheshwari kicked off the event and shared some numbers about the tremendous opportunity for India.
India’s IT industry is growing at $180 billion annually and is home to the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem. Microsoft, of course, wants to participate at both ends of the spectrum. In India, Microsoft has built a robust ecosystem with more than 300,000 enterprises as customers serviced by about 9,700 partners.
Maheshwari added that India has 4.2 million developers in the country and some 650 million people who are less than 25 years of age.
Trust & Security
“Technology must drive more inclusive economic growth. To do this you need core trust in technology, whether it is privacy, ethics around AI, cyber–that’s going to be huge,” Satya said in Mumbai. In an interview with the Economic Times , Nadella spoke in support of regulation for the use of artificial intelligence and data localization. “As technology becomes much more pervasive, just like we have regulation in food safety like we have the Federal Aviation Authority for air traffic and so on, we will always have regulation for things that are very mission-critical in our lives and society,” he said.
“There needs to be trust in technology that you all create, whether you are a retailer or a healthcare company. Trust comes down to four attributes: privacy, responsible AI, digital safety and security. It is trust in privacy, trust in AI that you apply. Trust has to be human right. AI has to be ethical.” – Satya Nadella
Security is a crucial part of Microsoft’s tech stack, which includes endpoint security, security services from the cloud, security intelligence, and threat protection.
Nadella called the economic losses due to cybercrime as “one of the most stunning issues of our times.” He stated how the company is focused on its operational security posture in real-time apart from building the security products.
Nadella gave the example of an incident in north India where 11,000 users were targeted for bitcoin mining. “Our operational security posture gives us that early warning signal and then we go inoculate these 11,000 users, using, in this case, Microsoft Defender. That ability to see in real-time, as an attack happens and then to remediate it—is that combination of both the security product and the operational security posture–both coming together,” he said.
In conversation with Asia’s richest person
At the Mumbai CEO Summit, Satya Nadella was in a fireside chat with the chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd., a Fortune Global 500 company and India’s most valuable company by market value. Ambani is the richest man in Asia.
Nadella also spoke about how Microsoft was looking to empower small businesses in India in their cloud journey with Jio. Jio, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Reliance Industries, is the leading telecommunications service provider in the country. Microsoft and Reliance had announced a 10-year technology partnership last year to accelerate India’s digital transformation. The strategic effort aims to enhance the adoption of data analytics, AI, cognitive services, blockchain, Internet of Things, and edge computing among small and medium enterprises.
Ambani termed the nascent partnership between the two companies as the “defining partnership of the decade”. Between Jio and Microsoft, Ambani aimed to deliver the full stack of services to propel India forward in the coming decade. Due to the scale of the two companies, the partnership can make a deep sectoral impact and prove to be disruptive for competitive businesses.
India, Ambani said, has all the components in place to “grow and march forward” and become the world’s third-largest economy and a “premier digital society” within the next decade. India became the fifth-largest economy last year according to the International Monetary Fund.
Gaming in India
During his conversation with Ambani, Satya Nadella touched upon gaming, almost unexpectedly. Ambani said that while it isn’t very big in India at the moment, there is a huge potential and it can become bigger than music, movies, and television shows put together. “Akash is very interested in this,” Ambani said referring to his son Akash Ambani who is the Chief of Strategy for the Jio business.
The conversation subtly moved towards Microsoft’s Project XCloud and Jio’s broadband readiness and may have just given a glimpse into Jio’s next bet – online gaming. Could there be a partnership brewing?
Microsoft also made a couple of announcements on the sidelines of the Future Decoded summit.
The company launched the 100X100X100 program for B2B SaaS startups in India . The initiative will bring together 100 committed companies and 100 early and growth startups that have enterprise-ready solutions to offer. These participating companies will commit to spending $100K over a course of 18 months on solutions provided by the SaaS startups.
Microsoft India also announced a collaboration with SBI Foundation to create opportunities for youth living with disabilities in the Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance sector. Launched in 2015, SBI Foundation is the CSR arm of State Bank of India, India’s leading public sector bank.

“We are living in a period of historic economic, societal and technological change,” said Nadella following his meeting with Dr Prasad.
“The next decade will be defined by digital technology. Indian industries and organisations of every size are turning to technology to help them do more with less, which will ultimately lead to greater innovation, agility and resilience,” Nadella said.

'Fantastic to be back,' says Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on his India visit
"It’s fantastic to be back in India this week, meeting with so many innovators and changemakers, like these employees at State Bank of India who are using technology to make a difference at their organization – and across the country," he said in his post on Wednesday.
- Updated Jan 05, 2023, 10:52 AM IST
Microsoft chairman and CEO Satya Nadella, who is currently on a visit to India, took to social networking platform LinkedIn to share his excitement of coming back to India and "meeting innovators and changemakers".
The post further highlighted how employees at India’s largest bank State Bank of India embraced Microsoft Power Apps to their benefit. A blog pointed to the use of Digi Toolkit which has been built using Microsoft Power Apps, and enables employees to fill customer details easily on their smartphones or PC.
The blog also claimed that today, all SBI’s employees have Office 365 and use services, such as OneDrive, Teams, SharePoint Online and Power Apps, as part of a digital transformation that the 220-year-old bank underwent in 2017. SBI has over 450 million customers and more than 250,000 employees.
Hyderabad-born Nadella is on a four-day visit to India to meeting key customers, startups, developers, educators and students. He addressed Microsoft Future Ready Leadership Summit in Mumbai on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, the Microsoft leader said there is tremendous momentum in cloud adoption, as he termed cloud a "big game changer". Nadella, in his address on Tuesday, listed cloud and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as imperatives that can be helpful in driving economic growth.
"Cloud has been a big game changer... cloud is in early-to-intermediate innings...," Nadella said and noted the "tremendous momentum in cloud adoption," he said.
He also lauded the way in which India is building public infrastructure. He also mentioned that energy efficiency will be one of the key components that will help economic growth in the future.
Nadella also met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday and discussed several issues including governance and security in the digital domain.
"Great to meet Chairman and CEO of Microsoft Corporation @satyanadella. Discussed delivery, governance and security in the digital domain," the Minister tweeted.
This is his first trip to the country since February 2020. Recently Alphabet Inc's Sundar Pichai also visited the country.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Plans Another India Visit As A.I. Talks Shift
Satya nadella last visited india in january 2023..
Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Satya Nadella is planning a trip to India in February to meet some of the country’s prominent Indian A.I. startups, according to Indian financial news site Moneycontrol.com, citing an internal email from a few weeks ago.

“A.I. is playing a game-changing role in shaping ‘India’s Techade’ and will make India and South Asia one of the most exciting markets for technology,” read the email, written by Puneet Chandok , Microsoft’s president of India and South Asia operations.
Nadella, who was born and raised in India, last visited his home country in January 2023 to speak on a number of Microsoft’s business initiatives in India and South Asia. At a summit in Mumbai, Nadella predicted A.I. would “augment every one of us in whatever it is that we are doing.”
“Every frontline worker will be able to do more knowledge work than they ever did. Every design task, whether it’s software engineering, mechanical design, architecture, is going to be that much more productive going forward,” Nadella told an audience of tech leaders at the event.
Also last year, Nadella met with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the U.S. during his state visit. The Microsoft CEO promised Modi that his company is “deeply committed to the growth of Indian technology…particularly artificial intelligence.” (Modi also met with Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Sundar Pichai during his visit.)
A year later, a more pressing topic in A.I. is the safety of the technology. According to Moneycontrol’s reporting, Nadella plans on meeting with Indian A.I. startups including Sarvam and Krutrim, among other early-stage companies. Krutrim, founded by Bhavish Aggarwal , recently crossed the $1 billion valuation threshold, making it India’s first unicorn A.I. startup .
This week, Nadella condemned the tech industry for not taking A.I. “deepfakes” more seriously after A.I.-generated, sexually explicit images of the singer-songwriter Taylor Swift went viral on multiple social media platforms last week. In an interview with NBC News’s Lester Holt that aired today, he said those images were “alarming and terrible.”
“I think we all benefit when the online world is a safe world. And so I don’t think anyone would want an online world that is completely not safe for both content creators and content consumers,” Nadella said in the interview. “So therefore, I think it behooves us to move fast on this.”

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to visit India in February, may meet AI start-ups
The visit comes after prime minister narendra modi held meetings with several big tech ceos including nadella in june 2023, to discuss the growing opportunities in ai..
Satya Nadella CEO of Microsoft.
Microsoft Corp’s Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella will be coming to India on February 7 and 8 as part of his annual visit to the country with the key theme for 2024 set as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its opportunities.
In an internal email a few weeks ago, Puneet Chandok, Microsoft India and South Asia's President, said that Nadella’s visit reinforces Microsoft’s commitment to applying technology to expand opportunities in the country.
“AI is playing a game-changing role in shaping ‘India’s Techade’ and will make India and South Asia one of the most exciting markets for technology,” the email said.
In June 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his US visit, held meetings with prominent US and Indian technology executives, such as Tim Cook from Apple, Sundar Pichai from Google, and Satya Nadella.
Nadella's office had then released a statement discussing his meeting with the Prime Minister.
Related stories
The statement highlighted discussions relating to harnessing the power of technology specifically about Artificial Intelligence and India’s capabilities.
“One important topic was the power of technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence, to help improve the lives of Indians. India is home to one of the most vibrant developer and start-up ecosystems in the world, and Microsoft remains deeply committed to the growth of Indian technology - that will impact both India and markets across the globe,” Microsoft’s statement said.
A year ago, CEO Nadella made a four-day official visit to India. During his visit, he met some of the key customers, start-ups, developers, not-for-profit organisations, and students.
Key focus on AI Sources told Moneycontrol that founders of some of India’s prominent AI start-ups including Lightspeed and Peak XV-backed Sarvam , Bhavish Aggarwal's AI startup Krutrim , and a few early-stage AI start-ups are gearing up to meet Nadella in Mumbai and Bangalore.
However, Moneycontrol could not individually verify the start-ups that were invited to the event.
Microsoft and OpenAI
The year 2023 was a big one for Microsoft and developments around Artificial Intelligence. In October 2023, Satya Nadella, in the company’s annual letter, highlighted the company’s big plans for AI after its partnership with OpenAI.
In March 2023, Microsoft announced AI integrations for all of its Office 365 apps and services. The new AI assistant called Copilot will be available in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and Business Chat. The AI assistant is powered by OpenAI's GPT-4 technology, the same framework that powers ChatGPT, Bing AI, and more.
In May 2023, Microsoft announced that it is further strengthening its partnership with OpenAI by integrating the Bing search engine into ChatGPT, a move aimed at directly competing with Google.
On November 17, 2023, in a shocking turn, OpenAI’s board dismissed Altman over a video call, accusing him of being “not consistently candid in his communications with the board”.
Three days later, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that Altman, Brockman, and other OpenAI employees will be joining the company's new advanced AI research team. Nadella added that Altman will serve as the CEO of the new advanced AI research team.
As AI adoption increases, revenues for Microsoft are expected to rise nearly 15 percent in its 2024 fiscal year, faster than the overall tech sector, according to data from Bloomberg Intelligence.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to make first official visit to Malaysia this month
KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 — The Chairman and CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella will be making a stop in Malaysia later this month.
It will become his first official visit to Malaysia since he took over the mantel from his predecessor Steve Ballmer 10 years ago.
Satya is not coming here to launch Xbox
If you are expecting his upcoming visit to Malaysia to finally bring good news to gamers who have been waiting for Xbox to be officially available in our market for more than two decades, well...unfortunately, that is not the reason why he is coming to Malaysia.
Instead, Satya’s visit mainly has to do with the hottest thing in tech at the moment: artificial intelligence (AI). Specifically, the lead man of Microsoft has been scheduled to deliver the opening keynote at the Microsoft Build: AI Day Kuala Lumpur on 20 March at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur is the second stop in Satya’s Microsoft Build: AI Day tour across Southeast Asia. Before that, he will be in Jakarta on March 19 and after he is done with Kuala Lumpur, he will then make his way to Bangkok for another session on March 21.
What you need to know about Microsoft Build: AI Day Kuala Lumpur
Targeting developers, data scientists, and technologists, Microsoft Build: AI Day is a one-day event that is meant to provide the opportunity for attendees to learn the latest innovations and opportunities within the AI space.
While Satya’s opening keynote address might seem like the biggest agenda of the event, there will also be panel discussions, tech demos, and hackathons. Among technologies that will be highlighted by these sessions include Azure OpenAI Service, Azure AI, Azure ML, Azure Kubernetes Service, Copilot, and GPT-4.
There is also a Connection Hub at the event whereby attendees can meet with experts, industry leaders, and fellow developers who not only can shed some light on your technical questions but also may offer opportunities for collaboration. You can register for free at Microsoft’s website if you want to attend the Microsoft Build: AI Day KL although do note that seats might be limited. — SoyaCincau
Microsoft CEO says "It wouldn't matter if OpenAI disappeared tomorrow. We have the data, IP rights, and all the capability."
Satya Nadella says Microsoft can run its AI projects even if OpenAI isn't in the picture.
Microsoft is placing all its bets on AI, especially after plunging a multi-billion dollar investment into OpenAI . And it seems to be paying off. Microsoft recently subdued Apple as the world's most valuable company after hitting $3 trillion in market capitalization, with market analysts attributing this success to its early investment and adoption of generative AI across its products and services.
Genesis: OpenAI's weekend-long fiasco
While everything might seem great on paper, Microsoft insiders recently complained about the complicated relationship the tech giant shares with OpenAI. Some indicated it's an overnight "glorified IT department for the hot startup." It comes on top of last year's OpenAI fiasco that led to CEO Sam Altman's firing and rehiring by the board of directors within a fortnight.
The insiders added that the multi-billion dollar partnership has negatively impacted Microsoft's AI department, which specializes in AI advances and development. Microsoft is reportedly more focused on its projects with OpenAI , which, according to a top executive who left the company because of the same issue, has contributed to the addition of more tombstones to the " Microsoft Graveyard ," including Azure Cognitive Search, Azure AI Bot Service, and Kinect DK.
Since the bizzare events that led to Altman's firing and rehiring, it's like OpenAI opened a Pandora's box and can't seem to steer clear of problems that have been riddling it in the recent past. During the whole fiasco, Microsoft was relatively quiet, but rumors looming the air at the time suggested that the tech giant was ready to absorb any OpenAI staffers leaving the startup due to the issue.
In a letter drafted to the board of directors, the staffers gave an ultimatum requesting for Altman's immediate reinstatement as CEO, further stating that "OpenAI is nothing without its people." Failure to adhere to this request would have led to hundreds of employees walking out of OpenAI's doors.
At the time, Microsoft had already set up an AI department at its LinkedIn office in San Fransico to absorb the OpenAI staffers. Sam Altman and Greg Brockman were to sit at the helm and run the operations for the entire unit. But Microsoft recently announced an internal reorg placing products like Microsoft Edge, Bing, and Microsoft Copilot and a new Microsoft AI division which will be ran by Deep Mind co-founder, Mustafa Suleyman.
OpenAI under fire for abandoning its founding agreement and mission
When OpenAI was founded, its mission and vision were to ensure that generative AI advances and developments were easily accessible to everyone for free. In 2015, OpenAI reached out to Elon Musk with the same idea, but the tech startup has seemingly veered off this mission. This has consequently led Musk to file a lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman for "stark betrayal of the founding agreement" and opting to go the for-profit way.

All the latest news, reviews, and guides for Windows and Xbox diehards.
He further criticized Microsoft and OpenAI's relationship, indicating:
"In reality, however, OpenAI, Inc. has been transformed into a closed-source de facto subsidiary of the largest technology company in the world: Microsoft. Under its new board, it is not just developing but is actually refining an AGI to maximize profits for Microsoft, rather than for the benefit of humanity."
Musk hopes the court will rule in favor and compel OpenAI to revert to its original mission and vision. But where would this leave Microsoft, which holds a 49% stake in the earnings of OpenAI's for-profit arm?
We were very confident in our own ability. We have all the IP rights and all the capability. I mean, look, if tomorrow OpenAI disappeared, I don’t want any customer of ours to be worried about it, quite honestly, because we have all of the rights to continue the innovation, not just to serve the products. But we can go and just do what we were doing in partnership, ourselves, and so we have the people, we have the compute, we have the data, we have everything. Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shared the sentiments highlighted above last year after being blindsided by Sam Altman's firing. This presents a form of assurance and dominance in the AI landscape . It also potentially asserts Microsoft's continued investment in the technology even if it's forced to sever ties with OpenAI.
Admittedly, Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT have equally experienced several issues over the past few months, including inaccuracy, with some users blatantly indicating the chatbots have gotten dumber , and some don't even find these tools useful . While these are major concerns, Elon Musk says we're on the verge of the biggest technology revolution with AI , but there won't be enough power by 2025.
