Summary of RACQ International Premium policy

How does racq travel insurance cover covid-19, what policies does racq offer, here's a breakdown of racq travel insurance features, standard features, optional add-ons, how to make an racq travel insurance claim, here's the bottom line about racq travel insurance, frequently asked questions, request travel insurance quotes and compare policies.

Destinations

  • There's no additional premium if you want motorcycle or moped cover on your comprehensive international policy.
  • RACQ's premium international policy offers unlimited emergency expenses (within reason).
  • While RACQ does cover expenses related to COVID-19, claims have a combined cap of $3,500 (with the exception of medical and funeral).

Compare other options

Table updated September 2023

RACQ offers a broad range of protection against unexpected costs related to COVID-19, including:

  • Overseas medical, hospital and emergency costs.
  • Funeral expenses, up to $20,000
  • Emergency expenses if you're quarantined due to close contact of a COVID-19 case or your travelling companion is diagnosed with COVID-19.
  • Cancellation fees and lost deposits due to any COVID-19 related event outside of your control.
  • Additional expenses if your trip is disrupted due to any COVID-19 related event outside of your control.

However, there is a combined cap of $3,500 for all expenses, with the exception of medical hospital, emergency and funeral costs.

There are also some scenarios that are not covered by RACQ, including if you ignored medical advice or knowingly put yourself in contact with someone who had COVID-19.

RACQ offers four international policies - Premium, Standard, Saver, and Annual Multi-Trip. It also offers three domestic travel insurance policies - Domestic, Domestic Cancellation and Rental Car Excess Only.

Rental Car Excess Only

The insurer of this product is Tokio Marine & Nichido. It comes with a cooling-off period of 21 days and choice of $250 standard excess for international plans.

These are some of the main insured events that RACQ will cover. These benefits apply across all international policies.

  • Overseas medical treatment
  • Lost, damaged or stolen property
  • Trip cancellation or amendment
  • Additional accommodation and transport
  • Theft of money
  • Luggage and travel delay
  • Kidnap and hijack
  • Personal liability
  • Accidental death

plus icon

RACQ also offers two add-on options so you can tailor your policy if required.

  • Rental vehicle excess cover. If your rental vehicle is damaged, this benefit will cover the cost of the insurance excess. Does not apply to campervans, motorbikes or scooters.
  • Ski and Winter Sports Cover. Cover in case you're injured on the slopes, plus additional risks such as equipment hire, piste closure, and avalanche.
  • Cruise Cover Extends your insurance policy to cover cruises, medical treatment on board, and marine evacuation.

cross icon

Unfortunately, travel insurance doesn't cover everything. Generally, RACQ will not pay your claim if it relates to:

  • Unlawful, wreckless or unreasonably unsafe behaviour by you.
  • Behaviour while you were drunk or under the influence of drugs
  • Expenses related to a pre-existing medical condition, if not listed on your policy
  • An act of war, invasion or revolution
  • You being unfit to travel or travelling against medical advice
  • If you travel to an area despite a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has issued a 'DO NOT TRAVEL' advisory being in place
  • Childbirth or pregnancy complications before the 26th week of gestation or if you have had previous pregnancy complications
  • Any errors, mistakes or omissions in booking arrangements, or failure to obtain the relevant visa, passport or travel documents
  • You riding a motorcycle without a current Australian motorcycle licence
  • An elective medical or dental treatment , cosmetic procedure or body modification (including tattoos or piercing)
  • Self-inflicted injury or illness, suicide or attempted suicide

This is not an exhaustive list. Make sure you review the RACQ PDS for a detailed breakdown of what won't be covered, found under its list of general exclusions .

The quickest way to make your claim is through RACQ's 24/7 online portal. Register with the email address you used to buy your policy, and RACQ will email you with instructions.

Alternatively, you can claim on your RACQ travel insurance policy over the phone, by calling 1300 207 371 or +61 2 8055 1696.

RACQ's Premium international policy offers a great range of benefits, including an impressive $10,000 limit for insolvency, $10 million for legal liability, and unlimited emergency expenses.

Members also enjoy additional perks such as discounted pet boarding, car hire, and even movie tickets.

One of the few drawbacks for RACQ policies is the $3,500 cap on COVID-19 related claims (with the exception of medical, emergency and funeral.) While this may be more than enough for some travellers, it may fall short for others.

If you're still not sure about RACQ, you can compare other travel insurance companies here .

What if I change my mind about RACQ travel insurance?

You have 21 days from the date of issue to change your mind, as long as you haven't started your trip and don't want to make a claim. Just let RACQ know and you'll get a full refund.

Is there an age limit for RACQ travel insurance?

Cover is available to travellers over the age of 18.

Can I get a RACQ travel insurance policy as a non-resident?

Yes, temporary residents over the age of 18 can get a RACQ travel insurance policy. You'll just have to hold a current Australian visa (not a tourist, study or working holiday visa) which will remain valid throughout your entire trip. You'll also need a return ticket, have a primary place of residence in Australia, and you must purchase your policy before you leave Australia.

Use a comma or space to separate ages. Add kids under the age of 1 by typing a “0” 0 traveller(s)

Advertiser disclosure.

finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles

We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.

Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.

How we make money

We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.

Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.

Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money .

Sorting and Ranking Products

When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. RACQ Travel Insurance Review

Learn more about RACQ’s travel insurance policies to find out about their coverage and fees and compare them with other insurers today.

racq travel insurance faq

Fact checked

Far from just providing roadside assistance to Queensland motorists, the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) offers banking, home, car and travel insurance to millions across Australia. The Brisbane company was founded almost 120 years ago and has more than 1.7 million members today.

Savvy can help you compare RACQ's policies with those of other insurers in the market by breaking down their insurance products for you. You'll be able to weigh up factors such as inclusions and exclusions, claim limits and premiums.

Find out more about what RACQ offers by comparing with Savvy and grab a quote today.

*Please note that Savvy does not represent RACQ for its travel insurance products.

racq travel insurance faq

More about RACQ travel insurance

What travel insurance policies does racq offer.

RACQ offers several travel insurance policies , including:

  • International Premium: RACQ’s most comprehensive international policy provides unlimited hospital and medical expense coverage, as well as coverage in other areas such as luggage and cruise insurance. You’ll also get 24/7 emergency assistance, whether holidaying in Jamaica or taking a much-needed trip to New York. This policy comes with limited coverage for COVID-19-related costs, which includes reimbursement of medical treatment and any cancellation fees or booking deposits if you need to cancel due to testing positive.
  • International Standard: this policy offers fewer benefits than RACQ’s premium policy. For those who choose this option, you’ll miss out on COVID-19 benefits, but you’ll still get coverage for medical treatment, travel delays, personal liability and cancellation fees.
  • International Saver: designed for those travelling on a budget, this policy covers total medical costs, some emergency expenses, loss of luggage and personal liability. However, you won’t be reimbursed for the excess on a rental car or any cancellation costs.
  • Annual Multi-Trip: this type of multi-trip insurance policy will cover all your getaways within a specific 12-month period, making it ideal for frequent fliers. All the coverage of RACQ’s premium plan is included, plus you can choose a maximum trip length of up to 60 days.
  • Domestic: this policy provides the broadest level of cover for those sticking close to home for their holiday. This domestic travel insurance policy covers you for some COVID-19-related expenses, such as cancellation and damage to your bags or personal items. You’re also covered if you’re on a cruise and must evacuate the ship because of a medical emergency.
  • Domestic Cancellation Only: this coverage protects you for up to $1,000 per person if you’re required to alter or cancel your domestic travel plans due to unavoidable circumstances. This will cover the cost of things like cancellation fees, lost deposits and prepaid tickets.
  • Rental Car Excess Only: as the name suggests, this provides you with up to $8,000 in rental car excess cover. COVID-19 coverage doesn’t apply to either of the domestic “only” policies.

When you’re shopping around for travel insurance quotes online, it can be easy to get overwhelmed by the many options available to you. That’s why, whether you’re taking a holiday to Nepal or a trip up to Broome, it’s important to compare your options with Savvy so you can get the best deal on the market.

What optional extras are available through RACQ?

Like many other travel insurance companies, RACQ offers optional extras for both international and domestic getaways. These include:

  • Skiing and winter sports cover: for an extra cost, you can include this snow and winter sports package on your travel insurance policy to protect you when you’re carving up the snow-capped ski fields. The benefits of this policy include the renting of equipment, slope closure, avalanches and poor weather. You can also claim lost ski lift tickets or medical costs if you injure yourself while you’re carving up the slopes.
  • Choose your excess: this add-on allows you to choose how much you pay if you need to make a claim, which could potentially make the cost of your travel insurance cheaper. You would normally have to pay an excess of $250, but you can opt for less.

What exclusions should I be aware of when buying travel insurance through RACQ?

The purpose of travel insurance may be to protect you while you’re on holiday, but policies don’t offer endless coverage. That’s why it pays to check where your policy draws the line on cover to ensure you have the right one for your trip. RACQ has a range of exclusions, including:

  • Trekking at more than 3,000 metres
  • The breakdown of a marriage, relationship, or friendship
  • Medical treatment for an unapproved pre-existing medical condition
  • Travelling for medical tourism
  • Intentionally injuring yourself
  • Ignoring the Australian government’s ‘do not travel’ warnings for a specific country
  • Travelling against the advice of doctors
  • Acts of terrorism or war

If you’ve found a policy that catches your eye, make sure you review the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) before you set your decision in stone.

What we think of RACQ travel insurance

What we like, $10 million personal liability cover.

RACQ offers you coverage up to $10 million if you’re found personally liable for damage of property or the injury of another person, which is almost double that of its competitors.

Competitive discounts for members

Just for being an RACQ member, you can receive a 20% discount on your travel insurance policy. This is quite competitive, given many other member organisations offer discounts of between 10% and 15%.

Ample policy options

RACQ offers up to seven different travel insurance options for international or domestic holidays which can suit travellers of most budgets.

What we don't like

Limited covid-19 coverage.

While many travel insurance providers offer COVID-19-related coverage across multiple policy levels, RACQ exclusively offers it on their premium and domestic policies.

Few optional extras

In most cases, providers offer you optional extras for motorcycle riding or adventure activities. However, RACQ only offers extra coverage for winter sports , such as skiing or snowboarding.

Acts of terrorism not covered

Some travel insurance companies will offer coverage for medical costs if your destination is struck by a terrorist attack. However, RACQ rules out cover completely for any terrorist activity.

Types of travel insurance

International.

International travel insurance can offer cover for a range of events, including medical expenses, lost luggage or items, cancellation fees and more when you're overseas and a long way from home.

If you're journeying within Australia, domestic policies are designed to offer many of the same protections as international travel insurance (with the exception of medical expenses).

Single trip

The most standard and common type of travel insurance, this policy can cover you for one trip starting and ending in Australia (and is available for both international and domestic travel).

Annual multi-trip

As the name suggests, this type of travel insurance covers multiple trips over a 12-month period. Depending on your insurer, you may be able to take an unlimited number of trips up to 90 days each.

You don't have to have a return ticket booked to take out cover while you're overseas. One-way travel insurance enables you to access cover without a set end date, such as if you're moving temporarily.

You may need to take out specialist coverage if you're setting sail on a cruise. Fortunately, cruise insurance can cover emergency evacuation, cabin confinement and more.

Just because you're older doesn't mean travel insurance isn't still important. If you qualify for cover, seniors' travel insurance can offer greater peace of mind for included events while you're travelling.

Adding winter sports or ski cover to your policy can add protection against damage to your equipment, piste closure due to bad weather and activities such as back-country skiing, heliskiing and more.

Adventure sports

Looking to enjoy some adventure sports on holiday? An adventure sports pack can grant you cover for a range of activities, such as hiking, scuba diving and motorcycle or scooter riding.

Jetsetting with the whole clan in tow? Some insurers offer family travel insurance, which enables you to include yourself, your partner and your dependent children under one policy to help you save.

If you're travelling interstate or overseas with your partner (or simply another friend or family member), you may be able to access a discount by taking out a joint or duo travel insurance policy.

Frequently asked questions about RACQ travel insurance

If something goes wrong while you’re on holiday, you can make a claim 24/7 through RACQ’s website or over the phone by following a few simple steps:

  • Double-check with the PDS that your claim is covered
  • Log onto RACQ’s online portal
  • Provide ample details on your claim form
  • Gather supporting evidence about your claim, such as medical or police reports and any receipts
  • Submit your claim form. RACQ’s website says it will take up to ten working days for it to be assessed

Yes – RACQ offers limited coverage for those who are carrying a child on holiday . The travel insurance provider may accept claims of unexpected complications up to the 26th week of gestation or for childbirth due to an accident or injury. You will also be covered automatically for single, uncomplicated pregnancies. However, all other pregnancies require a medical assessment to be covered.

The cost of travel insurance is based on several factors, including:

  • Destination
  • Level of cover
  • Any optional extras you choose
  • Pre-existing medical conditions you need to disclose
  • The policy excess you choose
  • The type of insurer and insurance policy you buy

The most notable difference between multi-trip and single-trip travel insurance policies is that one covers you for multiple holidays over 12 months and the other only covers you for a single getaway. In contrast, a one-way travel insurance policy covers you for taking a single trip without a return ticket booked. You may also be able to extend a one-way policy for an extra 12 months if you pay an additional cost.

Travel Insurance Tips

Before purchasing travel insurance, it’s important to understand what you’re buying and what’s covered under your policy. Some of the key things to consider before purchasing travel insurance include:

  • Your destination and travel itinerary
  • Your total trip cost and budget
  • Any pre-existing medical conditions you may have
  • The level of coverage you require
  • Any exclusions or limitations in your policy

It’s also important to read the fine print and understand the terms and conditions of your policy before purchasing travel insurance. This will help ensure that you’re getting the coverage that you need and that you understand your rights and responsibilities as a policyholder.

Racq travel insurance is one option to consider when purchasing travel insurance. It offers a range of benefits and generally receives positive reviews from customers for its coverage and customer service. However, it’s important to compare policies and read the fine print to ensure that you’re getting the coverage that you need. Does RACQ travel insurance have COVID-19 coverage?

RACQ does provide some coverage for COVID-19, however, it depends on your policy and level of coverage. Check the PDS for the full story on terms and conditions.

What other optional extras can I add to my RACQ policy?

Cruise cover

If you’re travelling on a cruise ship, then you’ll need to purchase RACQ’s cruise travel insurance on top of your policy, even if your cruise stays within Australian waters. If you do not get this optional extra, then any claims related to any part of your journey on a cruise ship will not be covered. You can pay the premium for cruise cover on any of RACQ’s policies, which will cover you for that policy’s included benefits while on the portion of your journey that takes place on a cruise ship.

Ski and winter sports cover

Snow travel insurance is important if you’re hitting the slopes, and without it, you may not be covered for any claims relating to snow sports. Through RACQ, the ski and winter sports cover is only available if you pay an extra premium on top of either a Premium or Standard policy, or if you have an annual multi-trip plan.

Are pre-existing medical conditions covered under RACQ’s travel insurance?

RACQ automatically includes cover for some pre-existing medical conditions , although you must declare your pre-existing conditions and have them listed on your certificate of insurance in order to be covered. So, make sure you disclose any conditions that you do have at the time of applying.

While you may have to pay an extra premium for your condition, some conditions are covered under your policy’s premium already.

If your pre-existing medical condition is not eligible for automatic cover, you must apply to have a medical assessment. Contact RACQ on 1300 338 821, or complete your medical assessment online, as part of the travel insurance quote process, at http://www.racq.com.au/travelinsurance . They will then be able to tell you if your condition can be covered.

What do I do if there’s an emergency during my trip?

If there’s an emergency, contact RACQ’s 24-hour emergency assistance and claims line on:

+61 2 8055 1696

How do I make a claim with RACQ travel insurance?

To make a claim, head online to RACQ’s website and either register or log in to your account using the email address you used to purchase your policy.

Alternatively, contact RACQ on:

Phone: 1300 338 821

Email: [email protected]

You will need to have supporting documents which are relevant to your claim, like receipts, police reports, or hospital invoices. RACQ will aim to notify you of the success of your claim within 10 working days.

Is it possible to cancel my RACQ travel insurance policy?

You can cancel your policy and receive a full refund within 21 days of purchasing it, provided you have not started your journey, have not made a claim, or intend to make a claim. If you want to cancel after the 21-day cooling-off period, then you may be able to receive a partial refund, at RACQ’s discretion.

To talk to RACQ about cancelling your policy, call them on 1300 338 821.

Refunds for disrupted travel due to travel bans

The COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread disruption to domestic and international travel. Border closures and ‘Do Not Travel’ directives from governments may have prevented you from going on planned trips.

Coverage under your purchased travel insurance policy may not have been required, either for part or all of your travel, due to this disruption.

We encourage all customers who purchased a travel policy that included coverage during a travel ban period and may not have received the benefit of the policy, to check their eligibility for a refund.

Am I eligible?

Eligibility for a full or partial refund on your travel insurance policy premium is based on the following. If you:

  • purchased an RACV Travel Insurance product, underwritten by Tokio Marine
  • couldn’t travel on your covered dates due to a travel ban imposed by the Australian government or border closures enforced by state or territory governments
  • have not made a claim on this policy.

How to apply

Received a letter about your travel refund? Here's what to do next.

Visit the website

Type in your unique website link to be taken to a fully secured refund calculation portal and complete an identification check.

Check your eligibility

Answer a series of questions to determine if you’re eligible for a refund.

Provide bank details

If you’re eligible for any kind of refund, you’ll be asked to provide your BSB and account number within the portal.

Receive refund

Payments should be processed within 3 to 6 weeks.

Frequently asked questions

How do i know if i’m eligible.

You may be eligible for a refund if you purchased an RACV Travel Insurance product underwritten by Tokio Marine and were unable to travel due to a travel ban period issued by the Australian government, or domestic border closures imposed by state or territory governments, and are not claiming on this policy.

What if I travelled?

If your travel wasn’t prevented by a travel ban issued by the Australian government, you won’t be entitled to a refund on your travel policy.

By travelling, including on the dates unaffected by travel bans, you would have experienced the benefit and coverage of the travel policy, subject to terms and conditions.

I have already made a claim, can I still receive a refund?

If you’ve already made a claim on a valid policy, where your travel dates weren’t disrupted by an authorised travel ban, you should not apply for a premium refund.

You won’t be entitled to a refund if you’ve made a claim under your RACV Travel Insurance Policy.

What if I need to make a claim under my travel policy?

If you need to lodge a claim under your RACV Travel Insurance Policy for plans that weren’t impacted by a travel ban, you can make a claim online .

As your travel was not impacted by a travel ban issued by governments, and you benefited from your RACV Travel Insurance Policy, you will not be entitled to the refund.

A refund is only given to those policies that were not effective because of a travel ban preventing travel on selected dates.

How is my refund calculated?

The amount of your refund will be calculated based on your travel dates that were disrupted. This means the duration you couldn’t benefit from your RACV Travel Insurance Policy.

Your refund amount will be determined after you’ve answered a series of eligibility questions within the refund portal.

How long will the refund take?

Payments should be processed in 3 to 6 weeks into your nominated bank account, following completion of your online refund request.

All refunds will be processed to the nominated bank account details provided. No refunds to Credit Cards, Cheque or Cash.

Your bank statement will show the deposit from Tokio Marine.

Who is Tokio Marine and why are they involved in this process?

Tokio Marine underwrites RACV’s Travel Insurance and provides the global emergency assistance and claims handling services offered in our policies. This is detailed in the relevant Product Disclosure Statement.

Tokio Marine will be managing the refunds process in their system and processing any refunds to RACV Members. This is in line with expectations issued by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

RACV Travel Insurance is issued by Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co. Ltd (Tokio Marine) ABN 80 000 438 291, AFSL 246548.

What if my website link doesn't work?

Please note the website link is case sensitive. You’ll need to make sure you are using uppercase and lowercase characters exactly as they appear.

Best Cancel for Any Reason Insurance Reviews

Best overall cfar insurance: seven corners travel insurance.

Seven Corners Travel Insurance is a well-known carrier that has served thousands of travelers. The Trip Protection Choice plan offers a cancel for any reason travel insurance add-on that covers up to 75% of total trip costs, with a maximum of up to $75,000 in reimbursement. Medical coverage is also generous, with up to $500,000 per person for eligible medical expenses and evacuation/repatriation limits of up to $1 million per person.

Seven Corners also offers generous benefits on lost baggage and delayed travel or baggage expenses. Baggage delay benefits kick in after just six hours and go up to $500 per person. The Choice plan does not insure travel canceled by tour operators that are or have gone out of business, so this policy may not be the best fit for travelers who plan to visit destinations with tenuous

Best Value CFAR Travel Insurance: AIG Travel Guard Travel Insurance

Travel Guard  is one of the best-known names in the travel insurance industry, with several plans available for traveler needs in every direction. AIG also provided the lowest quote for our hypothetical Europe travelers despite offering the highest ceiling on CFAR reimbursement. Both AIG's Preferred and Deluxe insurance plans offer CFAR coverage as an add-on to the policy, and some policies cover up to 75% of total trip costs going all the way up to a maximum reimbursement of $112,500.

Many AIG policies also include COVID coverage even without CFAR protection, as well as some ancillary benefits such as rental car protection and even pet travel insurance.

Best CFAR Insurance for Adventurers: Travelex Travel Insurance

Travelex Travel Insurance is a great cancel for any reason option for travelers who plan to participate in strenuous or adventurous activities during their trip. While the CFAR coverage add-on only reimburses up to 75% of nonrefundable trip expenses, it still provides a certain modicum of peace of mind in case of emergencies, with cancellation available as an option up to 48 hours before travel begins. Travelex offers low medical coverage compared with its competitors, with a maximum of up to $50,000 per person. Travelers participating in adventure sports can purchase an optional add-on bundle for additional coverage. In case of emergency, Travelex policy holders might do well to consider the travel insurance benefits on their credit cards to supplement any potential medical expenses.

Most Popular Cancel for any Reason Travel Insurance: Trawick Travel Insurance

Trawick International Travel Insurance had one of the priciest plans with CFAR coverage in our comparison, but the carrier's popularity amongst travelers is undeniable, for many reasons. The Safe Travels Explorer is particularly beneficial for pet owners who may incur medical expenses for their animals, as the plan includes up to $250 toward unexpected costs for cats and that who accompany their owners in their travels.

While Trawick's CFAR coverage was one of the most expensive add-ons we evaluated as well, the carrier offers generous compensation margins for travelers who need it, with up to 75% reimbursement for nonrefundable trip costs.

Best CFAR Coverage for Cruises: A XA Assistance USA Travel Insurance

AXA Assistance USA  is a great option for our hypothetical Europe cruise travelers, with its coverage of up to $1,500 per person for missed cruises and tours. This insurer also covers lost and delayed ski, sports and golf equipment – items that aren't always included in lost or delayed baggage coverage under other carriers. The rest of your belongings are safe too with AXA, as lost baggage claim ceilings are up to $3,000 per person - more than double some of its other competitors. Unfortunately, AXA may not be the best fit for travelers who need high-ticket travel protection, as the upper limit for CFAR reimbursement only goes up to a maximum of $50,000 despite covering up to 75% of total nonrefundable expenses, which is lower than the ceilings from other competitors such as AIG and Seven Corners. Furthermore, CFAR insurance coverage can only be added on to AXA's top-tier Platinum plan.

Best CFAR Coverage for Convenience: TravelSafe Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a great option to consider if you have a lot of stops or transits on your trip, or if you are an expat living abroad. This insurer offers flexible coverage terms for longer travel durations. If you are 79 years old or younger, you can purchase a single-trip travel insurance plan that can cover your adventures for up to 120 days. Furthermore, reimbursement for baggage delays and losses, trip delays and missed connections kick in far more quickly than most competitors, with up to $2,500 per person for eligible missed travel connections available at the three-hour mark.

While TravelSafe's medical coverage of up to $100,000 may be on the lower side for travelers who anticipate potential medical expenses, those with the right credit cards may be able to supplement their emergency costs through a claim with their card issuer.

Understanding 'Cancel for Any Reason' Coverage

Key features.

CFAR policies are unique; they allow cancellation for reasons beyond the usual covered reasons of travel insurance policies. This includes fear of traveling due to a pandemic or a sudden change of mind. However, it's essential to understand the specifics, such as the percentage of the trip cost reimbursed and the time frame for cancellation.

How CFAR Differs from Standard Policies

Unlike traditional travel insurance policies that cover specific cancellation reasons like illness or weather-related issues, CFAR offers a broader spectrum of coverage. It's the premium choice for travelers seeking full control over their plans.

That said, you must also buy travel insurance early if you want to qualify for a CFAR policy, usually within a certain period from when you place a deposit on your trip. That's why it's important to be mindful of when you buy travel insurance .

How to Pick The Best CFAR Travel Insurance Plan for You

There is no one-size-fits-all "best" insurance plan, especially for CFAR coverage, which can add to your insurance premium. Even for the same person, the right policy will vary from trip to trip, depending on your activities.

If you're primarily concerned about getting your money back if your schedule changes, you may be able to get away with a basic plan that allows you to add CFAR coverage. If you're undertaking a grueling hike through some challenging mountain ranges, you may want to select a policy that includes generous medical and evacuation protection, plus flexibility to reschedule or re-book your trip in case of injury. And if you plan to visit a number of destinations within a short amount of time, trip delay or baggage loss protection may need to be one of your top priorities.

Steps to Choosing CFAR Coverage

  • Evaluating Your Travel Needs Consider the nature of your trip, destinations, and what uncertainties you might face. This will help determine the level of travel insurance coverage you need.
  • Comparing Prices and Benefits Analyze different policies in terms of cost, coverage percentage, and additional benefits. Look for the best value for your specific needs.
  • Reading the Fine Print Understanding the terms and conditions, including the cancellation window and reimbursement process, is crucial to avoid any surprises.
  • Making the Most of Your Policy Once you've chosen a policy, it's important to know how to use it effectively.
  • Understanding Your Policy Familiarize yourself with the details of your policy, including how and when to file a claim.
  • Tips for Filing a Claim Be timely and thorough when filing a claim. Keep all relevant documents handy and follow the provider's process closely to ensure a smooth experience.

CFAR insurance is purchased as an add-on to a single trip travel insurance policy. It will affect how much you can receive for a canceled trip, but won't affect your other benefits.

No, insurance providers generally don't offer CFAR for multi-trip annual plans. It's limited to single trip travel insurance.

This varies by provider, but typically, CFAR policies reimburse between 50% and 75% of the pre-paid, non-refundable trip cost.

Yes, cancel for any reason travel insurance is worth it if there's a chance you need to change your travel plans. Traditional travel insurance only offers cancellation coverage for specific reasons, so CFAR insurance provides extra coverage and peace of mind. It also reduces the amount of paperwork necessary for filing a claim.

Trip cancellation coverage is a benefit of standard travel insurance plans, offering reimbursement if your trip needs to be canceled for specific covered reasons, such as a death in the family or illness. On the other hand, cancel for any reason insurance, reimburses you for a canceled trip regardless of the reason, so there are fewer restrictions.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Chose the Best CFAR Travel Insurance

Business Insider reviewed numerous insurance products looking for the best options. Especially when it come to travel insurance, each traveler has a distinct experience and plan. So we looked for companies offering the optimal coverage packages for certain groups.

To accurately compare the cost of CFAR coverage from the insurance carriers we recommend, we collected quotes for a hypothetical two-week trip to three countries in Europe for two travelers ages 38 and 45 that includes a river cruise, renting a vacation home, and taking several flights. The total cost of travel comes out to $14,000 between two people.

The main factors we evaluated when picking our top CFAR travel insurance options were: policy cost, level of protection, claims experience, and policy types.

All our reviews are independently done, meaning travel insurance companies don't get to review or approve our reviews. Similarly, our top guide spots are not for sale. All placements are earned through strong coverage, efficient claims handling, and strong customer service.
