Vibrant and colorful Miami is, without a doubt, one of the best places to visit in the US.

The downtown area merges into wonderfully diverse neighborhoods from Little Havana to Coral Gables.

However, most visitors to the vibrant yet laid-back city head to its beaches located on a long stretch of a barrier island.

South Beach especially is where the glamor’s at, topped by stylish Ocean Drive, which is lined with elegant Art Deco houses including Versace’s mansion, trendy restaurants, and nightclubs… the scene is pretty lively there.

Bookworms like me will immediately head to Powell’s City of Books–I still think it’s the biggest bookstore I’ve ever visited–while foodies will want to head directly to the local ice cream obsession, Salt & Straw.

Voodoo Doughnuts, now with a few locations nationally, also originated here and remains popular with tourists (though depending on who you ask, not locals–for what it’s worth, we’d rate the doughnuts 7/10).

During your weekend trip to Portland, make time to visit the Japanese Garden and the International Rose Garden, especially if you visit when everything is in bloom.

Plenty of incredible parts of the Columbia River Gorge, including famous Multnomah Falls, are also within easy reach of Portland and deserve to feature on your USA bucket list!

Nashville, Tennessee

From Apryl of Southern Traveling Gal

No doubt about it, there’s something about Nashville, that casts a long-lasting spell on travelers.

For travelers visiting Nashville, it’s not unheard of to plan a return trip as soon as the current one is over!

Only in “The Music City” is it possible to catch the latest exhibit at the Frist Art Museum, see a replica of the Parthenon and enjoy live music at venues along the Honky Tonk Highway.

For first-timers, touring country music icons like the Ryman Auditorium and the Country Music Hall of Fame is a must-do.

Don’t overlook artist-specific museums such as the Johnny Cash Museum and Glen Campbell Museum that provides a closer look at these music giants, either.

Much of Nashville’s allure lies within its distinctive neighborhoods, like the Gulch, filled with shops and restaurants.

Skyline of Nashville Tennessee at sunset overlooking the river, one of the most romantic getaways in the United States

It isn’t unusual to spot a long line or two here, typically featuring either people waiting in line to take a photo with the “What Lifts You” mural or getting into Biscuit Love.

Save some room for some barbecue from Peg Leg Porker!

12thSouth offers locally-owned boutiques, stores, and eateries. Also found here is Draper James, the flagship store of Reese Witherspoon’s clothing line.

Be sure to take home some cookies from Christie’s Cookie Company and snap a photo with the “I Believe in Nashville” mural.

Across the Cumberland River is the eclectic East Nashville. Don’t miss out on the mini doughnuts at Donut Distillery.

Depending on time, consider visiting Cheekwood Estates and Gardens, a 55-acre botanical garden, as part of your Nashville getaway.

Of course, no trip to Nashville is complete without hot chicken from Prince’s Hot Chicken or biscuits from Loveless Cafe, located near the Natchez Trace Parkway.

Boston, Massachusetts

From Linn of Brainy Backpackers

Boston is such a cool city to visit in the USA, rich in history, architecture, and food.

Along the waterfront, you can walk the 43-mile-long Harbor Walk.

But there is so much more to add to see during your trip to Boston, like the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile-long path taking you to 16 significant places in American history.

It is well marked and technically be walked in as little as 90 minutes, though you can download the app and visit each place which will take at least a whole day to complete.

Boston is home to the oldest public park in the United States, Boston Common, which is situated next to Boston Public Garden.

You can wander the parks and enjoy a ride in the Boston Public Garden’s historic paddleboats.

Nearby, you’ll find the Boston Public Library at Copley Square, which is an incredibly beautiful Renaissance Revival structure from 1895 that you should visit.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

From Melissa of Parenthood and Passports

Yellowstone National Park is the oldest national park in the United States and one of the best places to visit in the entire country.

Known for its geothermal activity, more than half of the earth’s geysers are located in the national park which straddles the borders of Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana.

Old Faithful is one of the most popular things to see in Yellowstone National Park .

The active and predictable geyser erupts approximately 20 times each day.

Visitors to the park gather around to watch the geyser blast hot water and steam into the sky.

Although quite impressive, Old Faithful is just one of many must-see geothermal features found in the park.

View of Grand Prism in Yellowstone National Park, one of the best places to visit in USA

One of the largest hot springs in the world, the Grand Prismatic Spring, is another popular attraction in Yellowstone.

Visitors can get an up-close view of the spring or take a short hike for a stunning overview of Grand Prismatic’s vibrant colors.

Beyond all of its geothermal features, Yellowstone National Park also boasts beautiful waterfalls, crystal-clear lakes, rivers, and more than 200 species of animals.

Bison, deer, moose, wolves, and even bears live in the park.

Because of all the wildlife in Yellowstone, visitors are strongly encouraged to use caution when hiking or camping and to carry bear spray to protect themselves in the event of an encounter.

Sawtooth Mountains, Idaho

From Allison of She Dreams of Alpine

Idaho is often overlooked when it comes to cool places to visit in the US, but the tiny town of Stanley serves as the gateway to an abundance of outdoor adventures in the stunning Sawtooth Mountain range and along the swift Salmon River.

Although it has a population of less than 100, Stanley is easily accessible in a 3-hour drive from the main airport in Boise or about a 1-hour drive if you’re coming from Sun Valley.

The best way to explore the Sawtooth Mountains is on one of the many hiking trails.

The hike to Alice Lake is a perfect introduction to the area, and you can either do a 12-mile day hike or backpack the longer Alice/Toxaway Loop over the course of a few days.

Whichever option you choose, you’ll discover gorgeous views of Alice Lake framed by the “Dragon’s Back” peaks of the Sawtooth Mountains, including Idaho’s own “El Capitan.”

For fun on the water, you can go fishing along the Salmon River or swim in Redfish Lake.

When you need some rejuvenation after your adventures, you can reward yourself with great food and drinks at the Stanley Supper Club and take a dip in the hot springs at the Mountain Village Resort.

Once you head home, you’ll surely find yourself raving to your friends about this hidden gem of a mountain town – unless you want to keep the Sawtooth Mountains and Stanley a secret for yourself!

Oregon Coast

From Kay of The Awkward Traveller

The Oregon Coast is one of the most underrated travel destinations in the USA, but for those who love moody, dramatic scenery, it is the best place to be.

Although the actual coast isn’t very long (338 or so miles, about a 7.5-hour drive without stopping), it makes for a great weekend or longer trip with added stops.

Starting at the north end, about 2 hours outside of Portland, the city of Astoria will serve as your jumping-off point with picturesque bridges and locations from The Goonies.

Heading south, take a pitstop at the cheese capital of the state  –  Tillamook , Oregon.

One car driving along the oregon coast as shot from above

Visit the Tillamook Cheese Factory and gorge yourself on all things dairy before continuing on to stunning Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area.

The highlight of the coast will be Yachats, Oregon, with incredible farm-to-table restaurants that are dedicated to sourcing local sustainable fish, meat, and produce providers.

On the southern end of the coast, you can find sand dunes in Florence, and natural rock arches among the cliffs in Brookings.

If your tolerance for rain is low, summer will be the best season to visit weather-wise, while winter and spring will have smaller crowds and lower prices.

Acadia National Park, Maine

From Ale of Sea Salt & Fog

Acadia National Park is one of the most beautiful national parks in the eastern United States, perfectly showcasing the beauty of the Maine coast.

Acadia has miles of hiking and biking trails, as well as easy coastal access for kayaking and sailing.

When visiting, plan to spend at least  2 days in Acadia National Park  so you can make the most of your time there.

One of the best things to do includes watching the sunrise at Cadillac Mountain, where you’ll get stunning views of the islands that dot the coast.

Things to Do in Acadia National Park

Drive Park Loop Road to enjoy some of the park’s most famous attractions, including Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, and Jordan Pond (don’t forget to stop for popovers at Jordan Pond House!).

For hiking, choose a paved Carriage Road to take you down to one of the many picturesque ponds and lakes in the park.

Plan your visit in the fall to see the famous New England fall foliage in full display, or in the summer to enjoy long, sunny days perfect for hiking.

If you love the outdoors, add Acadia to your list of places to visit in the US – you won’t be disappointed.

Joshua Tree National Park, California

From Monica of This Rare Earth

Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California is an incredible destination in the United States.

This desert ecosystem became a national park as recently as 1994, and it’s easy to see why it was chosen!

The Mojave Desert and the Colorado Desert meet in the middle of Joshua Tree National Park, which means that you will see two very different landscapes depending on which half of the park you are in.

The Mojave Desert is home to the famous Joshua Tree – a tall and spindly yucca – as well as giant boulders popular with climbers and hikers.

The majority of the park’s hiking trails are found in this region.

desert landscape at sunrise in joshua tree national park, an excellent part of several of the best west coast road trips usa

However,  while planning your Joshua Tree National Park itinerary , it would be a mistake to skip the Colorado Desert at the southern end of the park.

The Colorado Desert is hotter, lower in elevation, and flatter, but holds gorgeous landscapes full of cacti and, at the right time of year, wildflowers.

In the summer months, avoid strenuous hikes or leave early in the morning as temperatures can reach over 100 degrees.

Joshua Tree National Park is a designated Dark Sky Park, perfect for stargazing and well outside the bright light of the city.

Alaska is known as the Last Frontier, evoking adventure for those looking to travel to a truly unique place.

Because the state is massive, at over twice the size of Texas, you could spend as much or as little time exploring it as you have.

Many people take cruises through the Inside Passage and make stops in places like Ketchikan, Haines, and Seward.

Others fly into the main cities of Anchorage or Fairbanks and then rent vehicles and head off on their own adventures.

By far the best way to make the most of an Alaska vacation (though it requires a steep time commitment) is by driving to Alaska and spending as much time as you’d like wandering from one place to the next.

You can drive to the Arctic Ocean along the Dalton Highway, view North America’s largest mountain (Mt. Denali), or observe wildlife like caribou, grizzly bear, and moose.

Or, catch a flight out to a handful of the most remote national parks, or drive up to and hike out to massive, ancient glaciers.

If you enjoy fishing, go after halibut in Homer or salmon in the famous Russian River.

Regardless of what kind of travel you prefer, Alaska offers adventure for everyone and should definitely be on your travel bucket list!

From Michele of Adventures Abound

Just a 2-hour drive from both Portland and Seattle rest the foothills of the towering volcano Mount Rainier.

Known to the Indigenous since time immemorial, Mount Tahoma is covered in unimaginable beauty and can be enjoyed year-round.

Visit in the summertime for hiking through meadows strewn with wildflowers of every color, and in the fall for ripening berries and a better chance to catch the trails and lakes free of ice and snowmelt on a variety of great day hikes just outside of Seattle .

To extend your visit overnight, pitch a tent in an established campground, stay in a rustic lodge in the national park, or backpack along the Wonderland trail that circumvents the park.

Not feeling up to a lengthy hike?

Just driving through Mount Rainier National Park will afford endless views of waterfalls, glaciers, lakes, and even the chance to spot wildlife.

For those thrill-seekers looking for a more challenging adventure, apply for a permit to climb more than 8,000 feet to the summit, but be aware this is only for experienced mountaineers.

Mount Rainier National Park can also be enjoyed in the winter when the park sees an average of 55 feet of snowfall or more.

Head to the Crystal Mountain gondola to catch a great view of the peak while skiing and snowboarding down the slopes, or pick one of many great locations to snowshoe and backcountry ski along the mountain.

Whatever the choice for season and activity, Mount Rainier National Park is sure to be full of memories and adventure in one of the most beautiful destinations in the United States.

Arches National Park, Utah

Home to over 2,000 naturally-occurring sandstone arches, Arches National Park in Utah is one of the most uniquely beautiful places in the USA.

Whether you’re hiking to the incredible Delicate Arch (so iconic that it’s featured on Utah’s license plates), wandering through the Devil’s Garden, or taking one of the shorter hikes to visit some of the most impressive arches in the park, there’s no shortage of things to do.

Even one day in Arches National Park is well worth your time, but more would certainly be better.

Arches National Park is also home to internationally-recognized dark skies and some of the best stargazing in the United States–in order to see the best of the park, be sure to visit at least once after dark!

And, while Arches National Park is easily one of the best places to vacation in the US in its own right, the nearby town of Moab also makes an excellent launching pad to visit Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park.

It has it all, from glaciated mountains to breathtaking coastlines, crashing waterfalls, ancient rainforests, enchanting hot springs, and plentiful wildlife.

With such a treasure trove of natural landscapes, Olympic National Park is easily one of the best places to visit in the US.

A great way to explore the park is on foot, particularly as much of the park is roadless. There are numerous multi-day hikes to choose from and it’s popular with backpackers.

The 17.4 miles Hoh River Trail is one of the most impressive, taking you through a flourishing rainforest to the base of Mount Olympus.

For coastal visitors, Second Beach is one of the best Olympic Park photography  locations and a perfect spot for sunset.

However, with 73 miles of wild coastline, there’s plenty to explore!

There are endless options for the waterfall, forest, and nature lovers too.

In Sol Duc forest you can watch crystal water plunge into the lush greenery.

Or, you can choose to explore the vibrant green mosses of the Hoh Rainforest.

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Stretching over a mile deep, the Grand Canyon in northwest Arizona is one of the largest–and most impressive–canyons on the planet, and one of the most popular places to visit in the USA!

Come to Grand Canyon National Park to admire views from the rim, hike into the canyon , watch the sunrise and sunset, and perhaps even hike all the way down to the Colorado River.

If you do want to hike to the river, though, be warned: doing so is a 2-day commitment!

Anyone taking a southwest road trip in the USA should consider adding a visit to the majestic Grand Canyon to their list: it’s truly a sight that you’ll never forget.

Death Valley National Park, California

From Michelle of The Wandering Queen

One of the best places to visit in California is Death Valley National Park .

This park is filled with bright white salt flats, mountains splashed with pastel colors, and eerie rocks that move on their own.

This park is such a strange yet unique environment which makes it perfect for avid photographers.

One of the best things to do is to watch the sunrise at Zabriskie Point. The views are glorious as the sun slowly sets on the unique colorful mountains.

Afterward, make sure to hike the Golden Canyon, Gower Gulch, and Badlands Loop Hike. The trailhead is right next to Zabriskie Point.

Another popular activity is visiting Badwater Basin. The basin stands at 282 feet below sea level and is filled with white salt.

This is a great spot to take pictures of the salt in contrast with the tall, dark mountains in the distance.

Nearby the salt flats, you can visit the devil’s golf course where spikey salt formations cover the ground.

The next outstanding area to visit is the Artists Drive. The mountain is sprinkled with pastel colors like yellow, pink, purple, and green.

It truly is a spectacular thing to see!

Rocky Mountain National Park

From Jyoti of Story At Every Corner

Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the most gorgeous parks in the US.

It’s also easily reachable from Denver, Colorado, which has many flights from across the country, making it fairly simple to access and one of the most popular places to vacation in America!

The best place to stay is in Estes Park , a quaint little tourist town in the mountains.

There are many small towns all around the park and many choices for all price points.

The easiest way to visit RMNP park is by car.

You can then enjoy the park by making stops at each vista point and taking hikes from there.

Most stops have short and long hikes; easy and challenging hikes.

There is a hike for everyone, but there is also spectacular scenery right at the vista points, even without a hike.

Keep in mind that the popularity of Rocky Mountain National Park means that certain places, like Bear Lake Road, must be accessed via reservation.

The most popular road that goes across the park is the scenic Trail Ridge Road.

If you don’t have time to visit anything else, I recommend driving Trail Ridge Road from Estes Park to the town of Grand Lake.

Other major attractions include Sprague Lake and Bear Lake, to the south of the trail ridge road.

They offer absolutely stunning views and many wildlife viewing opportunities along with the drives.

There is so much to do around Denver that RMNP can be part of a week-long itinerary visiting Colorado  or a trip just for RMNP.

Set in the Sierra Nevada Mountains along the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is easily one of the most beautiful places in the US.

With crystal-clear water and plenty of activities in and out of the water, from hiking to SUP to swimming, there is no shortage of ways to appreciate the otherworldly beauty of Lake Tahoe .

To enjoy the views of the lake itself, summer is definitely the best time to visit–but winter has its charms, too, including plenty of skiing and incredible views of the lake framed by bright white snow.

Havasu Falls, Arizona

Located on Havasupai tribal lands not far from the Grand Canyon, Havasu Falls is simultaneously one of the most famous waterfalls in the USA and one of the hardest to access.

In order to visit Havasu Falls, you’ll need to secure an extremely competitive permit (they sell out months in advance) and complete a 10-mile hike in each direction.

You’ll also need to spend the night nearby, as it’s one of the permit requirements set out by the Havasupai people.

If you manage to swing both the logistics and the hike, though, the rewards are pretty spectacular.

Zion National Park, Utah

Home to some of what are quite possibly the best hikes in the country, Utah’s most-visited national park is absolutely one of the best places to see in the US.

Test your fear of heights (if you have one, that is) by hiking the incredible Angel’s Landing, and be rewarded with stunning views of Zion Canyon.

Venture deep into the Virgin River by hiking The Narrows , a hike that takes place literally in the river!

Seek out incredible views along Observation Point, the Canyon Overlook Trail , and the Watchman Trail.

Try to score a permit to hike the Subway, but if you can’t get one, don’t worry: there’s more to see in Zion National Park than you can cover in one vacation.

No matter how you spend your days at Zion National Park, there’s no doubt that you’ll be experiencing something worthy of a bucket list!

California’s magnificent wildflowers may be a bit better known outside of the country, but Texas’ phenomenal spread of bluebonnets and Indian paintbrushes that decorate the countryside each spring absolutely belong on anyone’s USA bucket list.

Whether you choose to visit the official Texas Bluebonnet Trail near Ennis (not far from Dallas) or head to the Texas Hill Country , there is no shortage of places to admire bluebonnets in Texas.

Though the blooming times can of course vary a bit depending on the weather, late March and early April are generally the best times to experience the beauty of Texas’ bluebonnets.

Upper Peninsula, Michigan

From Emily of Em’s on the Road

If you’re looking for unforgettable outdoor experiences without the price tag of popular destinations out west, then the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is the place for you.

One reason the Upper Peninsula (or U.P.) is really unique is that it is an ideal place for adventure seekers all year long.

In the warmer months, the U.P is a great beach destination in the Midwest thanks to its location with beachfront on Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron.

In the fall, pack your hiking boots and tackle rocky hiking trails for colorful views you’d never expect in the Midwest.

With an unobstructed panoramic view of Lake Superior, the hike up  Sugar Loaf mountain in Marquette, Michigan  is one of the most popular in the region.

Thanks to some serious snowfall, there’s so much to do in the U.P. in the winter months.

There are cross-country ski trails, snowmobiling trails, downhill skiing, dog sledding, ice climbing, and more.

Redwood National Forest

From Dhara of Roadtripping California

Most visitors to the Golden State put   California’s national parks at the top of their itineraries because they are just so spectacular.

Redwood National and State Parks, in the northern part of the state, offer you the chance to stroll among giant redwoods, some of the tallest and oldest trees on the planet.

A group of five parks, Redwood National and State Parks feature not just the towering redwoods, but also epic coastal views, beautiful prairies filled with wildflowers in season, and the chance to see birds and wildlife.

Enjoy some of the scenic drives in the parks: Howland Hill Drive, Coastal Drive, and the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway are all great choices.

Do some of the trails through the redwood groves to see the giant trees up close: the Big Tree Wayside Walk, the Stout Memorial Grove Trail, and Lady Bird Johnson Grove are all super scenic and relatively easy walks.

Gaze up at the trees, and enjoy the ferns and rhododendrons in the understory.

You can also go biking in the parks, and camp if you plan to stay for a few days.

Redwood National and State Parks are about 5.5 hours north of San Francisco by road, and you can visit all year, although you will have the best weather in the summer.

Apostle Islands, Wisconsin

From Jase of Roaming Vegans

A little-known gem in the north of Wisconsin is the Apostle Islands.

This island archipelago on Lake Superior looks like it belongs in Southeast Asia – not on the shoreline of a humble midwestern town.

However, its tucked-away location makes it all the more special for visitors.

While the lake freezes in winter, the islands come to life in summer with many activities like  sea kayaking , island hopping, and cliff jumping.

There is even an island home to one of the largest concentrations of bears in the Midwest–yes, bears!

The largest and most populated island is Madeline Island which makes for a great base to explore the nearby smaller islands.

While Cape Cod’s swimming season is much shorter than popular beach destinations elsewhere in the country, it’s still well worth visiting.

Route 66 isn’t technically just one place, but as one of the most iconic travel destinations in the United States, I couldn’t bear to leave it off this USA bucket list!

Stretching from Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California, Route 66 is America’s best-known road trip and the perfect place to find not-quite-forgotten slices of Americana, from quirky roadside attractions like Cadillac Ranch and the Catoosa Whale to beloved diners and 50s-era-inspired motels.

Route 66 passes through nine states in total (Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and California), and is a fantastic way to experience some of the best of what traveling in the US has to offer, all in one large trip.

Big cities, small towns, incredibly diverse landscapes, and beloved national parks are all featured heavily on Route 66.

Though it’s not technically on the route, even the Grand Canyon is accessible as an incredible side journey when road-tripping Route 66.

Whether you want to find a quirky campsite in Oklahoma or go hiking in Arizona, there’s no doubt that Route 66 is a classic US travel destination.

Big Sur, California

From Lauren of Ready, Set, PTO

Big Sur is one of the most beautiful places in the US and should definitely be on your bucket list.

Cruising along the winding Pacific Coast Highway with sweeping views of the Pacific is a magical experience.

This rugged area is located in Central California, about 5 hours north of Los Angeles.

If you aren’t able to find available lodging within Big Sur, check out nearby towns of Carmel and Monterey for more options, or try car camping with an epic view!

mcway falls as seen on big sur from above, one of the best places to visit in california

There are plenty of amazing  things to do in Big Sur .

I definitely recommend checking out the iconic Bixby Bridge (as seen in HBO’s Big Little Lies), admiring McWay Falls, hiking in Andrew Molera State Park, and Limekiln State Park, having a drink with a view at Nepenthe and watching the sunset at Pfeiffer Beach!

There’s not much cell service in Big Sur, so be prepared for an off-the-grid weekend of relaxation and gorgeous views.

Page, Arizona

The small town of Page, Arizona may seem like no more than a small town worthy of a brief stop on a road trip at first blush–but this small, unassuming town is home to some of the most incredible sights in the entire southwest, and it definitely belongs on your USA bucket list!

Page is where you can find the famous Antelope Canyon, as well as Horseshoe Bend , the Instagram darling of the Colorado River (for very good reason).

Just outside of Page, you can also find the remarkable Glen Canyon Dam, one of the largest dams in the US, as well as Lake Powell–but to see the best of Lake Powell, you’ll actually need to cross into Utah!

That’s not hard to do, though: Page is located right next to the Arizona/Utah border.

With such an outsized list of fun attractions, there’s no doubt that Page is one of the coolest places to vacation in the USA.

  • For Travelers

Visit the United States

The Secretary of Homeland Security and the Secretary of State work together to create and maintain an effective, efficient visa process that secures America’s borders from external threats and ensures that our country remains open to legitimate travel.

DHS provides a full range of online resources to help you plan your trip, manage your arrival and if needed extend your stay.

Plan Your Trip

  • Obtain a Visitor VISA - (U.S. State Department) Generally, a citizen of a foreign country who wishes to enter the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for temporary stay, or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. The visa allows a foreign citizen, to travel to the United States port-of entry and request permission of the U.S. immigration inspector to enter the U.S.
  • Determine the correct VISA category - (USCIS) There are more than 20 nonimmigrant visa types for people traveling to the United States temporarily. There are many more types of immigrant visas for those coming to live permanently in the United States.  The type of visa you need is determined by the purpose of your intended travel.  Get help determining the right VISA category at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services homepage.
  • Office of Biometric Identity Management (OBIM)  - Provides biometric identification services to federal, state and local government decision makers to help them accurately identify the people they encounter and determine whether those people pose a risk to the United States. OBIM currently applies to all international visitors (with limited exemptions) entering the United States, but not to U.S. citizens.
  • Visa Waiver Program: Passport Requirements Timeline - As of October 26, 2006, any passport issued on or after this date by a Visa Waiver Program (VWP) country must be an e-Passport  for VWP travelers to be eligible to enter the United States without a visa. If your passport is older, see requirements here
  • Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) - A fully automated, electronic system for screening passengers before they begin travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program. Voluntary ESTA applications may be submitted at any time prior to travel to the United States, and Visa Waiver Program travelers are encouraged to apply for authorization as soon as they begin to plan a trip to the U.S.

Your Arrival

  • Locate a Port Of Entry - Air, Land, or Sea (CBP) - At a port of entry, CBP enforces the import and export laws and regulations of the U.S. federal government and conducts immigration policy and programs. Ports also perform agriculture inspections to protect the USA from potential carriers of animal and plant pests or diseases that could cause serious damage to America's crops, livestock, pets, and the environment.
  • Global Entry Program (CBP) - Expedited screening and processing for pre-screened international travelers entering the United States.
  • CBP Traveler Entry Forms (CBP) - Whether you are a visitor to the United States or U.S. citizen, each individual arriving into the United States must complete one or more of U.S. Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) entry forms.
  • DHS Traveler Redress Inquiry Program (DHS TRIP) - If you have difficulties experienced during their travel screening at transportation hubs--like airports and train stations--or crossing U.S. borders, use this system to make inquiries or seek resolution.

Extend Your Stay

  • Apply to Extend Your Stay - (USCIS) If you want to extend your stay in the United States, you must file a request with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on the Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status before your authorized stay expires. If you remain in the United States longer than authorized, you may be barred from returning and/or you may be removed (deported) from the United States.
  • Change Your Non-Immigrant Status - (USCIS) If you want to change the purpose of your visit while in the United States, you (or in some cases your employer) must file a request with USCIS on the appropriate form before your authorized stay expires.

Tips During Your Trip to the United States

New York City never gets old, not with so many exciting and dynamic neighborhoods to explore © LeoPatrizi / Getty

The best thing about visiting the USA can be summed up in one word: variety. This expansive country contains an incredible number of travel experiences that would take a lifetime to complete – try wandering through the redwoods, breathing in deep gulps of sea air on glimmering beaches, or immersing yourself in the underground art scenes in some of the world's most famous cities.

Whether you're a nature lover looking for wide open spaces and snow-covered peaks or a culture fiend who can't get enough of museums and galleries, the USA has something for you. To help stem the overwhelm of options, these are our 12 favorite places to visit in the USA in 2024.

1. New York, New York

Best place for art and architecture

A city that looms large in American lore, New York continues to live up to its hype. A global center for art, fashion, finance, music and food, the Big Apple will never leave you feeling bored. Sip sunset cocktails on luxurious rooftops, mosh at local punk shows, marvel at world-class art in famous museums, or indulge in the best food you've ever had at a hole-in-the-wall favorite.

Planning tip: New York has so much to offer, but resist the urge to see it all on your first trip. Break things down by neighborhood or borough , or perhaps even by interest.

2. San Francisco, CA

Best for counter-culture

San Francisco contains multitudes, offering an urban travel experience with a distinctly West Coast flavor: take in breathtaking bay views at Golden Gate Park , wander the alleyways of the country's largest and oldest Chinese neighborhood , pay homage to LGBTIQ+ heroes in the Castro, or dive into cutting-edge art at SFMOMA and a plethora of local galleries.

3. National Mall in Washington, DC

Best for national history

Washington DC's National Mall represents the center of American political life and distills its cultural history into a two-mile strip of iconic monuments and the country's most famous museums. The mall contains ten Smithsonian museums – the National Museum of Natural History , the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the National Museum of American History, among others – plus landmarks including the National Gallery of Art, the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol building.

A group of friends cooking seafood over a fire outdoors in Maine

4. New England

Best for forest drives

Want to meander on mountain roads beneath brilliant forest canopies and savor tasty lobster and coastal views all in the same trip? New England is the place to be. Explore the quaint villages and cranberry bogs of Cape Cod , snuggle into a cabin in the mountains of Vermont , or dive into all the seafood you can eat in Portland, Maine . And if you visit in autumn, prepare yourself for some of the most spectacular fall foliage in the country.

5. Pacific Coast Highway

Best for West Coast exploration

The Pacific Coast Highway – technically three highways linked together – connects sunny San Diego with moody Seattle , delivering epic West Coast experiences along the 1600-mile journey. Stay at kitschy motels in coastal towns, admire the cliffs of Big Sur , marvel at the tidepools in Oregon , and explore Washington's Olympic National Park .

Planning tip: Sections of the Pacific Coast Highway run along sea cliffs prone to rockslides. Always check road conditions before setting out in case of any unexpected closures.

6. New Orleans, Louisiana

Best for foodies and art lovers

There's no place in the world like New Orleans  – we promise. A vibrant cocktail of Indigenous, Caribbean, African, French and Spanish influences, this city possesses a unique magic that keeps people coming back for more. Dive into its legendary Creole cuisine, revel in its lively festivals, and immerse yourself in a world-class music scene – this is the birthplace of jazz, after all.

Planning tip: New Orleans's coastal location makes it susceptible to hurricanes from June through October, with the most active months being August and September.

7. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Best for Indigenous history and culture

Nicknamed the "City Different," Santa Fe is rooted in American history while still keeping up with the times. A cultural melange of Indigenous, Spanish and Mexican influences, this city is home to numerous historical sites – like the 400-year-old Plaza – and a cutting-edge art culture that features a strong contingent of independent artists and the original Meow Wolf , a game-changing immersive art installation.

8. Chicago, Illinois

Best metropolis for midwestern charm

Chicago contains all the hallmarks of a great American city – excellent food, multicultural neighborhoods , top-tier museums – with a distinctly midwestern twist. Spend your days lounging next to the ocean-like Lake Michigan, catch a Cubs game at Wrigley Field , or have an evening of laughs at Second City , the launchpad for greats like Stephen Colbert and Tina Fey.

9. Rocky Mountains, Colorado

Best for big peaks and winter sports

If you want to see the quintessential mountains of the American West, the Rockies in Colorado should be your first stop. Rocky Mountains National Park is a logical starting point, but in truth, there are so many different ways to access this dynamic mountain range – hit the slopes in ski hubs like Vail , Aspen and Telluride, drive the scenic byways of the San Juan range, or pitch camp in one of the state's numerous national forests.

Planning tip: Unless you're from somewhere with similar elevation, you might feel the effects of altitude throughout the Rockies; stay extremely hydrated, take your time on hikes, and skip the alcohol.

10. Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina and Virginia

Best for east coast mountains

While the Rockies tend to get a lot of press – for good reason – the USA's oldest mountain range is a must-see. The Blue Ridge Mountains make up the southern third of the Appalachian mountain chain, and the lush forests wrapped around these rolling hills make for incredible blue-green vistas from the region's many ridges and balds. Dive into the numerous day hikes, cruise the Blue Ridge Parkway , or hike a section of the storied Appalachian Trail .

Man kayaking at a mangrove forest in the Everglades

11. The Everglades, Florida

Best for wildlife watchers

The importance of the Everglades can't be overstated – this sprawling wetland is an International Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a national park, thanks to the diverse profusion of flora and fauna that live here. Paddle through the coastal estuaries and camp among mangroves, or whiz through the numerous waterways via airboat. All the while, keep your eyes peeled for wading birds, manatees, and of course, alligators and crocodiles.

Planning tip: For the best experience, come prepared for the elements: sunscreen and bug spray are essentials.

12. Southwestern Utah

Best for geology lovers

If you want to visit one place in the US that sums up the grandiosity of its natural history, southwestern Utah is the place to go. Home to five of the country's most spectacular national parks, Red Rock Country puts the region's geological past on display with a dazzling amount of artistic flair. Hike the peaks and valleys of Zion and Bryce Canyon , or marvel at the crimson, ochre and amber palette in the cliffs and canyons of Capitol Reef and Canyonlands . And if you want a special treat, watch the sun rise over the sandstone masterpieces at Arches .

Planning tip: Large swaths of this region are extremely remote and sometimes lack cell service, both on the road and on the trail. Always share your plans with others and bring plenty of water in case of emergencies.

Biden and Trump to hold competing trips to the U.S.-Mexico border Thursday

President Joe Biden will make a rare visit to the U.S.-Mexico border Thursday, the same day former President Donald Trump is also expected to visit the southern border.

"Biden will travel to Brownsville, Texas to meet with U.S. Border Patrol agents, law enforcement officials and local leaders," the White House said in a statement.

"He will discuss the urgent need to pass the Senate bipartisan border security agreement, the toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border in decades," the statement said. "He will reiterate his calls for Congressional Republicans to stop playing politics and to provide the funding needed for additional U.S. Border Patrol agents, more asylum officers, fentanyl detection technology and more."

politics political politician

Two sources familiar with Trump's planning told NBC News that he Trump will deliver remarks at Eagle Pass, Texas, which is about 330 miles from Biden's stop.

Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement that the White House is sending Biden to the border because, she claimed, he's "losing terribly" in the 2024 race. "Biden’s last-minute, insincere attempt to chase President Trump to the border won’t cut it," she said.

Commenting on his plans after a campaign meeting in New York on Monday, Biden told reporters, “I’ve been planning on going Thursday.

“What I didn’t know is my good friend is apparently going,” he added, referring to Trump.

Biden declined to comment when asked whether he would be meeting with migrants during the trip.

Biden last visited the border in Jan uary 2023 , which was his first trip there as president.

His rare visit to the southern border comes as Trump and Republicans continue to attack his administration's handling of migrants crossing into the U.S.

Immigration is certain to be a key issue in the general election cycle as GOP candidates ramp up those attacks on the president and Democrats, while Biden has scolded Republicans for failing to take legislative action to address the influx of migrants.

An NBC News poll from January found that 57% of registered voters said Trump would handle securing the border better, while 22% said the same for Biden. The same poll found that 48% of people said they would trust Biden to treat immigrants humanely, while 31% said the same of Trump.

Earlier this month, Senate Republicans killed a bipartisan border security and foreign aid bill whose key negotiator was Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla. Republicans ultimately decided to sink the legislation after some urging by Trump.

And as Senate Republicans dashed any hopes for meaningful congressional action to improve the situation at the border, the GOP-controlled House narrowly impeached Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for his handling of the border in a 214-213 vote.

For their part, many Republicans have argued that Biden has executive authority to address the migrant crisis using executive authority.

Last week, NBC News reported that the administration is considering taking unilateral action that would make it more difficult for migrants to pass the initial screening process for asylum at the southern border and would quickly deport migrants who recently came to the U.S. who don’t meet the criteria.

Although Trump's administration enforced several strict immigration policies, including using Title 42 to expel more migrants, some of the highest border crossing numbers in years were recorded during his presidency.

In 2019, for example, border crossings by undocumented migrants hit a 12-year high, the Department of Homeland Security said at the time.

Biden Will Make Rare Visit to Southern Border on Same Day as Trump

The president, trying to go on the offensive over immigration, is planning to travel to Texas on Thursday, when Donald J. Trump is also set to visit a border city.

President Biden is planning to make a rare visit to the southern border on Thursday, his press secretary said, traveling to Brownsville, Texas, on the same day that former President Donald J. Trump has already scheduled a border trip.

The plans underscore the urgency now propelling Mr. Biden and his team on immigration, which has become one of his most serious political liabilities. Under the Biden administration, record numbers of migrants have crossed the southern border — a fact that Mr. Trump and Republicans have wielded aggressively against Mr. Biden.

A majority of Americans disapprove of Mr. Biden’s job performance, and polls show that voters who disapprove of him cite immigration more than any other policy issue as a reason.

On his Thursday trip to Brownsville, Mr. Biden plans to meet with Border Patrol, law enforcement and local officials, according to Karine Jean-Pierre, Mr. Biden’s press secretary. Mr. Biden did not directly answer a reporter’s question on Monday about whether he would meet with migrants.

The president is expected to put the blame for the migration crisis on House Republicans, who blocked a bipartisan package that would have enacted severe restrictions at the border, and to call on Congress to come together and address the challenge.

Mr. Biden said he had planned the visit without being aware that Mr. Trump would also be traveling to the border.

“I planned it for Thursday. What I didn’t know was that my good friend apparently is going,” Mr. Biden told reporters during a trip to New York, making an apparent reference to Mr. Trump.

Mr. Biden has been considering executive actions that would essentially prevent those who cross the border from claiming asylum, but Ms. Jean-Pierre did not specify any new policies he would roll out.

“Him going is an action,” she said. “He’s taking this very seriously.”

Mr. Trump will visit Eagle Pass in Texas on Thursday. CNN reported the planned trip last week.

Mr. Trump plans to deliver remarks from the border to highlight the immigration crisis and lay blame at the feet of Mr. Biden, according to a person close to Mr. Trump who was not authorized to discuss the plans publicly.

Mr. Trump is expected to highlight crimes committed by migrants in New York and in other cities, as well as the arrest of a Venezuelan undocumented immigrant in the recent high-profile killing of a 22-year-old nursing student in Georgia, the person added.

On Monday, after the news of Mr. Biden’s visit was announced, Mr. Trump sought to blame his rival for the killing, writing on his social media site, “When I am your President, we will immediately Seal the Border, Stop the Invasion, and on Day One, we will begin the largest deportation operation of illegal CRIMINALS in American History!”

Mr. Biden’s visit to Brownsville, which has historically felt the effects when illegal crossings surge, comes as the White House tries to pivot on its political strategy at the border. For much of his time in office, Mr. Biden and his aides avoided publicly talking about the border, even though his senior aides were warned early on that the migration crisis could erode his support with voters.

Facing calls to visit the border in 2021, Vice President Kamala Harris described the move as a “grand gesture” and said she was more focused on addressing the root cases of migration, but she eventually acceded to the pressure and visited El Paso .

Mr. Biden’s aides spent months debating whether to put in place more enforcement-minded policies at the border to contend with the increase in migration as Republicans accused Mr. Biden of being weak on border security.

But after denouncing Mr. Biden for months over the border, House Republicans then tanked the bipartisan immigration bill, in part because Mr. Trump did not want Mr. Biden to gain a policy victory.

Mr. Biden’s senior aides believe the opposition allowed the White House to go on the attack and accuse Republicans of simply playing politics at the border and failing to actually alleviate the crisis. Democratic officials have also pressed the White House to attack Republicans for walking away from a package that included the kind of restrictions even Trump allies demanded for years.

“The border is in chaos,” Mr. Biden told donors last week in Los Altos Hills, Calif. “They don’t have the personnel.” He said Republicans would not even give the government the money “for the machines to detect the fentanyl that’s coming in.”

“It’s not what it says about political courage, it’s about what it says about the state of the party,” Mr. Biden said.

The executive order Mr. Biden is considering would shut down the border to new arrivals if more than an average of 5,000 migrants per day tried to cross unlawfully in the course of a week, or more than 8,500 tried to cross in a given day. It is likely to be blocked by the courts, but even the rollout of such an order would allow the White House to deflect accusations that it is avoiding the crisis and would continue to put pressure on Republicans to come to a legislative compromise.

Where that stands, though, is uncertain. At a White House meeting with governors on Friday during the National Governors Association conference, Mr. Biden told the governors that lawyers had told him he could not use the kinds of measures that Mr. Trump had, according to two people familiar with the remarks. It was unclear specifically which authority he was referring to.

“There is no executive action that would have done what the bipartisan Senate-negotiated proposal would have done,” Ms. Jean-Pierre said. “There was a deal coming out of the Senate in a bipartisan way that took four months. Republicans got in the way because of what Donald Trump told them to do.”

By making the visit to the border, the White House appeared to be hoping to avoid the kind of political backlash it faced when Mr. Biden took roughly a year to visit East Palestine, Ohio , after a Norfolk Southern train derailed and spilled a toxic mess in the small town.

Mr. Trump filled the void, visiting the community in February 2023 in the weeks after the derailment, fueling accusations that Mr. Biden had neglected the crisis.

Our Coverage of the 2024 Presidential Election

News and Analysis

President Biden won Michigan’s Democratic primary  but faced opposition over his support for Israel as it wages war in Gaza, with a substantial number of voters casting “uncommitted” ballots  as part of a protest movement against him .

Former President Donald Trump was victorious in Michigan’s Republican primary, coasting past Nikki Haley to continue his undefeated primary streak . Haley has said she intends to stay in the race at least through Super Tuesday on March 5.

What does the “uncommitted” vote in Michigan mean for the general election in November? Nate Cohn, our chief political analyst, offers four things to consider .

Pressure Builds in the West Wing: The presidency has always been a pressure cooker, but some in the Biden administration see wars, age, family stress and another race against Trump combining with unusual force .

Trump’s March to the Nomination: After his overwhelming victory in South Carolina, Trump shows no sign of being shaken from his controlling position in the Republican Party  — not in 2024, and not in the foreseeable future.

Gretchen Whitmer’s Electoral Test: The Michigan governor, who has taken a prominent role in President Biden’s re-election campaign, is popular in her state. But will that be enough for her to deliver Michigan for Biden?

The Rise of ‘Ambivalent Voters’: The 2024 presidential election could be decided by the Americans who vacillate between voting and not voting. What do we know about them?

In Ukraine, Schumer challenges Speaker Johnson to ‘rise to the occasion’ and pass more US aid

Standing on Ukrainian soil in a surprise visit with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer challenged House Speaker Mike Johnson to take up a $95 billion national security package that includes aid for the country as it battles Russia’s invasion.

“The weight of history is on his shoulders,” Schumer told reporters in Lviv on Friday after he and four other Democratic senators met Zelenskyy and other officials. “If he turns his back on history, he will regret it in future years.”

Schumer said he was in Ukraine “to talk directly to Speaker Johnson,” as the aid bill passed by the Senate has stalled in the House and Ukrainian forces run dangerously low on ammunition and weaponry.

“Speaker Johnson, history is looking down upon you, looking over your shoulder,” Schumer said. “Rise to the occasion.”

The Senate passage of the aid package, with $60 billion for Ukraine, came last week after the collapse of a broader framework that would have combined the aid with changes to American border policies. The Senate quickly moved ahead with just the foreign aid portion, passing it on a 70-29 vote, with 22 Republicans in support.

But the path ahead in the House is far from certain. Johnson, R-La., has not yet put forward a plan for passing it in the House.

GOP opponents of aiding Ukraine are a vocal faction in the House, where Republicans have narrow control and former President Donald Trump, the front-runner for the GOP presidential nomination, holds more sway. Trump has opposed the aid package and urged Republicans to vote against it.

Some House Republicans have threatened to try to remove Johnson from his job if he puts the aid package up for a vote. He has said he “ won’t be rushed ” into a decision.

House Republicans have floated possible ways to push the aid to passage, including by scaling it back, but no plan has so far emerged. It remains unclear how Johnson – only months into the job after replacing ousted Kevin McCarthy as speaker — will navigate the deep divisions within his party.

Republicans who oppose the aid say that the money is better spent in the U.S. and it should be paired with legislation to curtail record numbers of crossings at the southern border. They rejected the proposed Senate compromise on border policy, saying it was not tough enough, and some of them want to see the House try again to tackle that issue before moving to the national security package.

Schumer said in Ukraine that Johnson should not “let blind obeisance to Donald Trump prohibit you or your colleagues from voting for this package.”

He said the delegation had come also to “tell the Ukrainian people we are with you” and to tell European countries that the United States is not abandoning them.

Ukrainian officials have told the delegation that they will lose the war without additional U.S. aid, Schumer said. The group visited a cemetery and saw freshly dug graves, “and we saw the faces of the brave men and women who had lost their lives — some of whom had lost their lives, inevitably, because they didn’t have all the ammunition that they needed.”

Also on the trip are Sens. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Michael Bennet of Colorado, Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire and Jack Reed of Rhode Island. Reed is the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Schumer’s trip comes at a perilous time for Ukraine. Zelenskyy has said that delays in aid from the U.S. and other Western countries are creating an opening for Russia to make advances on the battlefield .

The visit comes days after senators and House lawmakers from both parties traveled to the Munich Security Conference to try to assuage European leaders, including Zelenskyy , who are closely watching the U.S. developments. The conference coincided with Ukraine withdrawing troops from the eastern city of Avdiivka after months of intense combat.

In the Senate, a group of Republicans opposed to the foreign aid kept the chamber open all night to rail against it before the final vote. Some echoed Russian President Vladimir Putin in calling for a negotiated end to the war.

Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, part of the increasingly isolationist wing of the GOP, traveled to the Munich conference to make his case . He countered Zelenskyy’s pleas by saying that additional money wouldn’t “fundamentally change the reality” on the ground.

“Can we send the level of weaponry we’ve sent for the last 18 months?” Vance asked. “We simply cannot. No matter how many checks the U.S. Congress writes, we are limited there.”

In an interview with The Associated Press before his visit, Schumer said opposition to the aid “may be the view of Donald Trump and some of the hard-right zealots. But it is not the view of the American people, and I don’t think it’s the view of the majority of people in the House or Senate.”

Schumer said he is “greatly worried” about what could happen if Congress doesn’t act.

“They’re hurting,” he said of Ukraine. “And I think by us being there, we’re giving them strength and giving them hope that America is still fighting for them.”

Top 20 Awesome Places to Visit in March in USA

Early spring is when you’ll be able to enjoy some iconic landscapes in manageable temperatures for less money than in peak seasons so I think it’s a win-win! From my time traveling around during March, here are my favourite spots to explore…

1. Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve

For a truly awe-inspiring, I’d recommend taking the winding dirt road through Antelope Valley in Southern California where blankets of poppies literally carpet the ground in flames of red and orange. Here 8 miles of foot trails weave through the captivating blooms.

Of course, I can’t completely second guess Mother Nature and weather conditions are a big influence on the poppy crop, but they roughly bloom for 10 weeks between late February and early May and peak for around three weeks between late March and early April.

In a good year, this is a breathtaking and unforgettable sight, but I would suggest keeping an eye out on the Antelope Valley Nature Preserve website as your visit approaches for up-to-date information on the flowers.

  • Visitors’ Centre Address: 150th St W, Lancaster, CA 93536
  • Average temperature –  19 degrees

My must-do highlights

  • Capture some breathtaking shots of the vibrant and beautifully bloomed poppies.
  • Slow down and relax by taking a walk along one of the trails that weave through the pretty flowers.
  • Check out an exhibit at the Jane S. Pinheiro Interpretive Center  filled with botanical watercolor paintings.

2. New Orleans, Louisiana

Most romantic hotels in New Orleans

If, like me, you are a lover of literature, arts, and culture but not a fan of scorching heat and crowds then visit New Orleans during this month. The city embraces the transition into spring with the big Mardi Gras celebrations beginning to wind down and many wonderful festivals emerging to replace them.

The Tennessee Williams Literary Festival brings together budding writers and established playwrights for a program of masterclasses and performances of original works and culminates with the popular ‘Stella’ shouting competition in The French Quarter.

The LGBTQIA community celebrates its literary heritage in the popular Saints and Sinners festival, which also takes place during this month. Wednesday at the Square and Buku Festivals curate amazing immersive musical talents and plenty is going on for foodies too.

New Orleans is a vibrant city that embodies the spirit of springtime so it is no surprise that this is the perfect time to enjoy it! I would also recommend staying in one of the many interesting boutique hotels and make your stay even more special.

  • Visitors’ Centre Address: 339 Decatur St, New Orleans, LA 70130
  • Average temperatures  – 23 degrees
  • Attend one of the lively and fun events/celebrations , such as Mardi Gras Day, Super Sunday, or St Patrick’s Day parade.
  • Grab a tourist pass to enjoy a discount on an array of activities and attractions across the city.
  • Go to watch a musical or theatre production  at the famous and historic venue, Saenger Theatre.

3. Golden Isles, Georgia

Golden Isles, Georgia

The Golden Isles are four beautiful barrier islands that lie between Savannah, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida. The islands rise out of a vast area of marshlands, giving the appearance of one continuous stretch.

The Isles are a melting pot of cultures and this is what I love about it! During this month  gentle breezes and spring sunshine make it the perfect time to get out and explore nature before it becomes too hot and crowded.

I would recommend strolling through shady woodland, picnicking on sandy beaches, and watching the sun sink over the horizon – bliss!

Go nature spotting for rare Leatherback turtles, a plethora of birds, and leaping dolphins, or relax and enjoy some boutique shopping in Pier Village or fine dining in the quaint village of Redfern.

For original Victorian architecture and speciality shopping and dining, I would suggest visiting historic downtown Brunswick, where brownstone townhouses and bright-colored awnings lend an old-fashioned vintage feel.

  • Visitor Centre Address: 529 Beachview Dr, St Simons Island, GA 31522
  • Average temperature  – 21 degrees
  • Climb 129 steps to the top of the lighthouse on St Simons Island for picturesque panoramic views across the coast.
  • Visit Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island and watch a spectacular colorful sky as the sun sets.
  • For those who love to golf, spend the day at Sea Island Golf Club to enjoy three championship 18-hole courses.
  • Also, consider driving to nearby Tybee Island and staying in one of the many quaint and gorgeous Tybee Island hotels on the popular destination for a tranquil and beautiful break.

4. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia in spring time

It’s not always sunny in Philadelphia but this month there’s a good chance it will be bright and fresh. I personally think this is the perfect time to visit the city, temperatures average around 12 degrees in the day so take a jacket you’ll be just fine!

I think probably one of the loveliest sights this time of year is the swathes of cherry blossoms in West Fairmount Park. Here y ou can enjoy a picnic and admire the manicured lawns, or stroll around the tranquil Japanese House and whimsical ponds and waterfalls, all under a fragrant canopy of blossom trees.

The springtime is also a great time to enjoy a craft beer in the early spring sunshine so I would highly recommend visiting one of the city’s many breweries and taking in some of the lovely historical streets in neighborhoods like Spring Gardens.

It’s also a great time to enjoy some local artists’ work in progress at Cherry Street Pier and hang out with arty types along the wonderful waterfront.

Drive-in movies are also a big thing in Philly and the milder temperatures mean lots of opportunities to see cool films old as well as new in this classic American way!

  • Visitor Centre Address: 599 Market St, Philadelphia, PA 19106
  • Average temperature – 12 degrees
  • If you’re into sports and love to hear a roaring stadium, make sure to catch an NHL, NFL, or NBA game .
  • Book tickets for Dining in The Dark which is a unique and unusual blindfolded tasting experience.
  • Visit the eclectic indoor marketplace inspired by Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, Genie’s Secret Bazaar filled with hidden doors.

5. Fairbanks, Alaska

Fairbanks, Alaska in March

Fairbanks is a truly vibrant river city in the very North of Alaska and serves as the perfect base camp for the wilderness of Denali National Park…6 million acres of alpine forests, snow-capped mountains, and untouched nature.

The icy temperatures mean the crowds tend to come here in the summer months but in spring, you can see the city and surroundings at their finest, under the breathtaking colors of The Northern Lights!

It is also the season of midnight sun and endless sunsets and sunrises and of the World Ice Art Competition. I would also recommend enjoying the ice museum, hot springs, hot coffee, and a multitude of unique adventure sports!

I also suggest trying your hand at Ice Skating, Cross Country Skiing or safely spotting wildlife out in the wilderness. If you are lucky you might see Grizzly Bears, Black Bears, Wolves, Moose and Caribou, and maybe even a golden eagle!

  • Visitor Centre Address: 101 Dunkel St, Fairbanks, AK 99701
  • Average temperature –  -3 to -19 degrees
  • Take an Aurora tour or overnight experience to catch the magical dancing northern lights.
  • Warm up at the Chena Hot Springs in the outdoor pool whilst being surrounded by the fresh, crisp snow.
  • Make sure to check out the sculptures created by artists from all over the world at the World Ice Art Competition.

6. Texas Hill Country

Texas Hill Country flowers

The Hill Country stretches splendidly between San Antonio and Austin and encompasses beautiful landscapes, historic towns and villages, natural wonders, and amazing wineries.

During this month the  temperatures are pleasant and the wildflowers are in full bloom, especially the Texas Bluebonnets, lupin-like and a stunning shade of electric blue they are the official state flower.

Nestled amongst meadows of wildflowers and gentle hills are several stunning historical towns of German heritage. There are many to choose from depending on your preferences. I personally think Boerne is a great town with a wonderful cavern at its center and lots of quaint boutique shops and cafes lining its Main Street.

The very German city of Fredericksburg oozes Bavarian charm, Kerville is one of the oldest settlements in Texas and perfect for history buffs. Finally, I would suggest not missing Lake McQueene with waters perfect for swimming you don’t want to miss it!

The Texans love spring so as you travel through Hill Country expect to find plenty of cook-offs, festivals, and cultural events to keep you entertained!

  • Taste some of the best and award-winning spirits in Texas with a visit to one of the local distilleries .
  • Take a drive through the  Willow City Loop  which comes alive with color from the beautiful flowers.

7. Nantucket and Martha’s Vinyard, Massachusetts

Nantucket - most beautiful places to visit in Massachusetts

I would highly recommend avoiding the hordes of deep-pocketed tourists and visiting this iconic destination in the springtime! This month is a wonderful time to visit Cape Cod as it is when the majestic humpback whales take up residence in the blue waters around the islands.

Averaging between 40 and 50 feet long, seeing these amazing creatures propel themselves out of the water is something you’ll never forget!

It’s not going to be hot but that’s the trade-off for having the place virtually to yourself! Aside from the whales, I would recommend just kicking back and enjoying the idyllic beaches, quaint fishing villages, sun-bleached harbor towns, and historic lighthouses for a much more reasonable price than during peak season.

You can also check out some of the legendary filming locations for Jaws on Martha’s Vinyard and get a glimpse of some of the crazy multi-million dollar summer estates of the rich and famous, all without battling through the crowds!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Nantucket Department of Culture & Tourism. 25 Federal Street, Nantucket, MA 02554, Phone: 508-228-0925 Fax: 508-325-5443
  • Average temperatures – 8 degrees
  • Wrap up for a stroll along one of the beaches to escape the hustle and bustle of the town.
  • Discover Polly Hill Arboretum , an Island landmark filled with shrubs, trees, and flowers from all over the world.
  • Go on a guided tour to see historic sites such as Oldest House, The Old Mill, and Greater Light.

8. Petit Jean State Park, Arkansas

Petit Jean State Park USA

The park is now a beautiful expanse of unique landscapes carved out by Cedar Creek and packed with unusual bluffs and canyons and an impressive 95 ft waterfall that tumbles from the 100-acre Lake Bailey, created by Damming the creek.

In this month, the weather is temperate, the trees are blooming and the sunsets are spectacular. Temperatures hover around 17 degrees this time of year.

There are several rustic cabins and the central Mather Lodge, all built in the 1930s and available for accommodation, as well as designated camping and glamping so I would recommend choosing one for a truly cozy vacation!

Many gorgeous trails traverse the park and there is boating and Kayaking on Bailey Lake as well as two outdoor pools. I honestly think it’s the perfect accessible spring escape for lovers of the outdoors who find bigger parks daunting.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 1285 Petit Jean Mountain Rd, Morrilton, AR 72110
  • Average temperature  – 17 degrees
  • Visit the indoor Petit Jean Farmers Market and grab some delicious local produce or a souvenir to remember your trip.
  • Capture a cool and Insta-worthy shot underneath the Natural Bridge along Seven Hollows Trail  created from a rock formation.
  • Hike down to the base of Cedar Falls to admire one of the biggest waterfalls in the state.

9. The Tidal Basin, Washington D.C.

Best places to visit in the USA in March/Spring

Each Spring Washington D.C ‘s tidal basin is transformed by acres of pink and white cherry blossoms and I would highly recommend a visit around this time!

Thousands  of tourists are drawn to the nation’s capital each year to witness the spectacle! Usually, the tree’s peak bloom is late March through early April but the unconventionally warm temperatures this year have experts anticipating an early bloom.

To avoid heavy crowds and maximize beautiful photo opportunities, I would recommend visiting the Tidal Basin in the early morning and catching the sun rising over D.C.’s iconic marbled monuments under blankets of fragrant petals!

Then I suggest using the rest of the day to explore the amazing city which is full of green spaces, awe-inspiring architecture, and wonderful museums and sculpture gardens. If you have limited time I recommend an open-top bus which will take you around all the famous presidential monuments and Arlington Cemetary.

I would recommend visiting some historic districts such as Georgetown, with its famous university and the atmospheric steps used in The Exorcist, and DuPont Circle for eclectic nightlife exciting dining, and wonderful art in The Phillips Collection.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 1501 Maine Ave SW, Washington, Phone  (202) 479-2426
  • Average temperature – 12-19°C
  • Enjoy a bike ride  around the stunning loop and array of national monuments.
  • Rent a paddleboat  and enjoy some time spent relaxing on the calm water.
  • Spend the day at the  National Cherry Blossom Festival  to see live entertainment amongst the flowers.

10. Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai Hawaii - best places to visit in March

A top vacation spot, I personally think this is the perfect time to enjoy Kauai’s lush vegetation and beautiful beaches without the summer crowds. Although Kauai is the wettest of the Hawaiian islands and March is still considered the rainy season, the rain typically comes in short bursts and the sun quickly returns.

If you aim for the end of the month you will likely experience little rain, warm temperatures, and lower prices as peak season begins in April. Although Kauai is small it is not called’ The Garden Island’ for nothing and its abundance of colorful blooms will not fail to delight!

Expect palm-fringed beaches, crystal clear waters, unique multi-colored canyons, rare wildlife, and plunging waterfalls…a little slice of paradise infused with the famed ‘Aloha’ spirit!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 4-484 Kuhio Highway Kapaa ,  Hawaii ,  96746. Phone 808-822-5113
  • Average temperature – 22 degrees
  • See the island from a different perspective by taking a helicopter tour overlooking the beach landscape.
  • Kayak around Hanalei Bay  where you can also enjoy a delicious meal whilst watching the sunset.
  • Fly through through the native forests on a zipline for an adrenaline-pumping experience.

11. Fontainebleau State Park, Louisiana

Fontainebleau State Park

Treat yourself to a stay in an iconic wooden cabin on stilts in this beautiful State Park that stretches for 2,800 acres along the crystal shores of Lake Pontchartrain.

Historically a sugar plantation, Fontainebleau was named after the forest near Paris, the place of choice for centuries of French kings in their leisure time.

Of course, we commoners can enjoy the many peaceful pastimes on offer in the Louisiana version, it’s a popular spot for all things aquatic; boating, canoeing, swimming, and personally I would highly recommend just sunbathing on the unspoiled sandy beaches.

Visitors can stroll beneath the centuries-old oak trees and native cypresses, or head out along the wooden pier and admire the crystal waters of the lake.

During this month,  the temperature is warm and the humidity fairly low, which makes it the perfect time to explore the 27 miles of hiking and biking trails along the Tammany Chase, which follows the route of the old railroad tracks.

I would suggest bringing a picnic for a beautiful, tranquil day in idyllic surroundings, unbelievably less than an hour away from New Orleans!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 62883 LA-1089, Mandeville, LA 70448
  • Average temperature  – 22 degrees
  • Bring your own or rent a paddleboard from Bayou Adventure to enjoy spending time out on the water .
  • Spend a day at the beach and go for a swim, relax by sunbathing across the shore, or have a fun sandcastle competition.
  • Take advantage of the nature trails and explore them by foot or bicycle.

12. Providence Canyon, Georgia

Providence canyon Georgia

Georgia gets very hot in peak summer season and as it is not a massive park it can also get very crowded. For easier hiking temperatures and uncluttered photographs of the beautiful ‘Little Grand Canyon’ I think this month is the perfect month for a visit.

The park’s rock faces are especially spectacular due to the 143 varied shades that range from orange and red hues to pure white, catching the sun sinking behind them is a really special sight.

Visitors can enjoy 10 miles of trails that circumnavigate the canyon rim and take in some of the park’s other wonders such as the cascading Providence waterfalls and the strange shells of old 1950s automobiles that are relics of another era.

For perfect clear night skies, I would highly recommend camping out in one of the areas around the canyons and witnessing the wonder of the stars without any light pollution to obscure them!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 8930 Canyon Rd, Lumpkin, GA 31815
  • Average temperature – 21 degrees
  • Experience picturesque views whilst enjoying a picnic lunch at one of the viewpoints which are accessible by hiking or driving.
  • Visit  Dick’s Creek Falls  located just outside the park, where you can discover an enchanted location and several waterfalls.
  • Hike along the Canyon Loop Trail  to explore up to 9 of the canyons located along the 2.5-mile path with scenic landscapes.

13. Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta CIty USA

Summer temperatures in Atlanta are pretty intense, so I honestly think early spring is the perfect time to take advantage of this southern gem. As the Southeast’s cultural hub Atlanta is positively teeming with creativity, arts, and mind-blowing history, it’s also a foodie heaven!

Both buildings are now part of The Martin Luther King JR National Historical Park , and I think it’s a great place to take a stroll in springtime! Another beautiful place to admire this month in bloom is The Atlanta Botanical Gardens, whose landscaped grounds are budding with color in early spring.

The foodie scene in Atlanta reflects this passion and fusion of cultures and the famous southern hospitality, you can find delicious and innovative food at every turn. I would suggest leaving space for some Georgia Bourbon Pecan Pie from Pie Shop in Downtown!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 267 Park Ave W NW, Atlanta, GA 30303
  • Average temperatures – 19 degrees
  • Have some fun at the  Atlanta Fair  with carnival games, exciting rides, and delicious food.
  • Indulge in one of the unique, themed dining experiences from murder mysteries and floral wonderlands to robot waiters and crafty cocktails.
  • Admire the vibrant street art around the city where talented artists have created incredible murals.

14. Saguaro National Park, Arizona

Saguaro National Park Arizona

Saguaro National Park is named for the iconic giant cactuses that have been known to grow up to 78ft tall, although the average height is about 40ft.  Walking amidst these giants, especially as the sun sinks below the horizon is an eerie and wonderful experience. For a great view of the Saguaro Forest, I would suggest hiking up to the Valley View Overlook which offers an amazing panoramic vista of the Cacti.

If you really want to get in amongst them, I would also recommend the Mica View Loop which takes you right through the middle of these amazing plants!

During this month  you have the bonus of all the beautiful wildflowers in bloom, splashing the desert landscape with color. You’ll also find ancient petroglyphs and an array of wildlife from bobcats to venomous Gila Monsters…I’d suggest giving both a respectably wide berth!

Remember the park covers almost 100,000 acres and is split in two by the city of Tucson, for the best cactus action head for the smaller western portion.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 2700 N Kinney Road, Tucson, AZ
  • Average temperatures – 24 degrees
  • Explore a variety of cacti through the winding path at the Cactus Garden Trail located at the visitor center.
  • Capture an Instagrammable shot next to the tallest cactus you can find along one of the many trails.
  • Take a trip to Rincon Mountain for a breathtaking view overlooking the unique cacti-filled landscape.

15. Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park, Kansas

Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park

The badlands are a vast acreage of ancient wilderness that will take you back to earlier times when the lands were occupied by the Oglala Sioux tribe.

The landscape is arid and strange with rare Niobrara Chalk outcrops rising out of flat prairies like temples. The name ‘Little Jerusalem’ refers to a mile-long collection of these white rocks that rise in awe-inspiring 100 ft spires and cliffs, bringing to mind the ancient city.

During this month the temperature is mild and humidity low so in my opinion, it’s a great time to hike one of the two permanent trails and treat yourself to the best views without navigating summer crowds.

Aside from Little Jerusalem, there have been traces of life dating back as far as 85 million years found here, so I would highly recommend looking out for amazing fossils of ancient giant clams and oysters!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: County Road 400 and Gold Road, Oakley, KS 67748
  • Average temperature – 15 degrees
  • Experience a  Ranger-Guided Backcountry Hike to explore the off-trail paths and see a different perspective of the rock formations.
  • For a short but beautiful hike, take the overlook trail  which provides breathtaking views across the park
  • Walk the Life on the Rocks Trail  to admire two panoramic viewpoints along the natural, chalky rock surface path.

16. San Diego, California

San Diego Beach spring

I think San Diego is awesome for many reasons, it’s beautiful, laid back, rich in maritime history, and surrounded by gorgeous swathes of ocean and parkland!

During this month you can catch some amazing festivals such as Paddy’s Day and The Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival as well as enjoy the many outdoor delights the city has to offer in the sunshine.

You’ll also get better rates on flights and accommodation by avoiding peak season F or totally chilled-out bohemian vibes I highly recommend Ocean Beach for cheap and delicious Mexican food, killer margaritas, and a real new wave ‘summer of love’/ surfy atmosphere.

Just out of the city nature lovers will delight at the carpets of wildflowers in Anza Borego Desert State Park or the flower fields at Carlsbad Ranch. It is also the perfect time to catch the immense Gray Whales on their migration back north.

I would suggest taking a little drive along the historic Route 101 and see how many you can spot, or take an organized tour from the marina.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 996 N Harbor Dr, San Diego, Phone:  (619) 236-1242
  • Average temperature – 19 degrees
  • Have a ride through the exquisite and colorful Carlsbad Flower Fields on a retro tractor.
  • Take a sunset sail tour  to enjoy the city’s landmarks and have an unforgettable experience.
  • Explore the Spanish-style village in Balboa Park filled with museums, galleries, and gardens.

17. Arches National Park, Utah

Arches National Park, Utah

With intolerable summer temperatures of up to 100 degrees, The Arches National Park’s peak season is often unbearable for those not accustomed to the heat.

Add crowds to that and no matter how fabulous the landscape is it can be a miserable experience! I personally think it’s wiser instead to head to the iconic park in early spring when temperatures are far more pleasant and the crowds are yet to arrive.

The Arche’s strange prehistoric landscape has become synonymous with Utah, and the instantly recognizable ‘Delicate Arch’ is now the symbol for the whole state. With over 2000 of these otherworldly stone arches and relics of the nomadic Ute tribe, there is plenty to explore across the 119 square miles of the reserve!

Most of the trails are short and accessible except The Devils Garden Primitive Trail, which requires a slightly more seasoned hiker. For the ultimate Arches experience, I would recommend trying to hit the park at sunset and seeing the whole thing cast in an ethereal orange glow, absolutely beautiful!

18. Palm Springs, California

Palm Springs USA

If you fancy yourself a bit of a hipster you’d better get to Palm Springs, a cool and artsy city long favored by the Hollywood jet-set for its glamorous elegance, sunshine, and healing springs.

The city, which is nestled in the beautiful Coachella Valley between 4 mountain ranges is particularly notable for its many examples of mid-century modern architecture, swanky boutique shopping, and world-class art….and golf of course.

Whilst you’re there I would suggest you don’t miss the amazing Aerial Tramway for stunning views across the entire valley and perhaps a mountaintop lunch, or the amazing Sunnylands Public Gardens and Mansion.

Although much of the mid-century architecture belongs to private owners you can still take in some amazing examples by taking a tour through the Tennis Club and Araby Cove districts.

There are so many things to do but a visit to Palm Springs would not be complete without making the most of alfresco dining in the city’s beautiful restaurants…my little tip, go for ones that are tucked away off main tourist routes and you’ll get superior quality for a fraction of the price.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Palm Springs Visitor Information Center, 2901 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262, Phone: 800-347-7746 | 760-778-8418
  • Average temperature – 27 degrees
  • Cool down and take a break from the heat with a visit to  Palm Springs Art Museum  filled with contemporary paints and sculptures.
  • View the Tahquitz Canyon which is home to a magnificent 50-foot waterfall , the perfect trip for a hot day.
  • Grab a wellness pass to gain a discount from an array of spa centers, fitness classes, and other rejuvenating experiences .

19. Sedona, Arizona

Sedona Arizona - March vacation ideas

The desert town of Sedona near Flagstaff, Arizona is America’s answer to Glastonbury. During this month, I think hikers will delight in the perfect temperatures, rust-colored trails, and wildflowers in full bloom.

Surrounded by majestic red-rock buttes and ancient pine forests the town has become a haven for people in search of spiritual and metaphysical healing and the streets are lined with new-age shops and Native American-inspired treatment centers I personally love it!

Sedona is believed to have several ‘Vortexes’, swirling centers of energy that seem to emanate from the red rocks, which are regarded as a cathedral without walls or a natural henge.

Here you can expect to find yoga retreats, hippy rituals, and all forms of spiritual healing, it is said that no matter what brings you to Sedona you will always leave feeling lighter and brighter with your spirit soothed, uplifted, and restored!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Sedona Visitor Information Center, 331 Forest Road, Sedona, AZ, 86336, Phone: 928.282.7722
  • Average temperatures – 20 degrees
  • Experience one of the best shopping spots in Sedona at the Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village.
  • Drive along the Red Rock Scenic Byway to check out some of the stunning scenery and landmarks.
  • Book a thrilling Pink Jeep Tour  and explore the steeper trails in a unique and cool wrangler.

20. Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Texas

Palo Duro Canyon State Park Texas

A great location for hikers or adventure vacation, Palo Duro Canyon on the Texas Panhandle is the second largest Canyon in the country and I personally think this is a great time to visit for warm temperatures, fewer crowds and less rain too!

The park’s most iconic rock formation is called the lighthouse and it rises out of the ground in 300 ft of splendid rust-colored rock…in my opinion the hugely popular lighthouse trail is the best way to view it and also get amazing views out over the canyon.

I think it’s also worth extending your stay to overnight in one of the camping or glamping sites as the night skies in this part of the world are truly phenomenal!

I would suggest looking out for the unmistakable herds of protected Texas Longhorn cattle that roam freely across the land and adventure lovers might want to try the terrifying zip line that crosses the canyon between Dallas and New Mexico.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: State Hwy Park Rd 5, Canyon, TX 79015
  • Average temperature – 20 degrees
  • For those who love mountain biking , this is a great place to have an off-road adventure through one of the trails.
  • If you are looking for a unique way to view the canyon , make sure to have a go on the zipline located near the park’s entrance.
  • Enjoy spending a night under the stars by reserving a spot at one of the camping grounds.

Surgeon preparing for a procedure.

Raw tuna. Copious caffeine. Cigarettes. Unpasteurized brie. Alcohol.

Most women know to avoid these potentially harmful substances while pregnant, plus certain risky activities such as rock climbing, ice skating, and skiing.

But what if your job could negatively impact your pregnancy?

That’s what a team of researchers from Harvard Medical School and the University of Kansas recently set out to investigate. To start, they narrowed in on expecting mothers in two careers that demand long hours: medicine and law. But physicians — surgeons, in particular — spend many of those hours on their feet, often facing life-or-death stakes. The team wanted to know: Does that extra stress lead to negative birth outcomes, including shorter pregnancies, lower birth weights, premature births, and even health issues for newborns?

“Anything that a mother experiences during their nine or 10 months of pregnancy can have a lasting impact.” Lilly Springer, study co-author

According to the team’s recently published National Bureau of Economic Research working paper , the answer is yes. But the effects are “not enormous in magnitude, which I think is very reassuring,” said Anupam B. Jena , the Joseph P. Newhouse Professor of Health Care Policy at the Medical School, associate physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, and one of the authors on the paper.

The paper, which was co-authored by David Slusky, a professor of economics at the University of Kansas, has not yet been peer-reviewed.

“It certainly does suggest that there might be some differences in birth outcomes that are attributable to the lifestyle of medicine, all the things that it includes,” Anupam said. “But it’s also important not to sell it to be more than what it is.”

The correlation between stress and pregnancy problems is well documented. One study found that in the six months after the Sept. 11 attacks, women with Arabic names experienced a 34 percent increased chance of their baby being born with a low birth weight. The authors pinned that increase to a surge in anti-Arab sentiment, which elevated the women’s stress levels.

But even seemingly more benign events that are dramatic and unexpected, like your team winning the Super Bowl, led to a 4 percent increased likelihood of a low birth weight, according to another study.

“Anything that a mother experiences during their nine or 10 months of pregnancy can have a lasting impact on not only the immediate birth outcomes, but adolescence, and even young adulthood,” said Lilly Springer, a Madison & Lila Self graduate fellow at the University of Kansas and an author on the paper. “Those nine months are incredibly formative.”

According to the paper, physicians tend to have about 2.3 percent lower birth weights and 0.3 percent shorter pregnancies than lawyers; surgeons fare a bit worse in pregnancy length (about 0.9 percent shorter) and are about 32 percent likelier to deliver prematurely than non-surgeon physicians. Anupam said these numbers are not extreme. They’re comparable to the effect of air pollution on infant health.

2.3% Lower birth weights for physicians than lawyers, according to the study

But for some expecting mothers, even a small reduction in their infant’s birth weight could be cause for concern.

“Two percent doesn’t seem like a big deal,” Springer said. That’s only a third of the birth weight gap between Black and white mothers. But it’s bigger than the education and urban-rural birth weight gaps. And if an infant is hovering around a riskier weight (typically under 5.5 pounds), “a 2 percent difference can really push you over the edge,” Springer said.

But both Springer and Anupam want to make it clear: These results do not mean that expecting mothers should avoid high-stress jobs or quit when they get pregnant (which, for many, isn’t a viable option anyway). Nor should the findings provide a rationale to discriminate against women, blocking them from entering high-stress careers.

“It’s really easy to look at the study and say, ‘Well, physicians shouldn’t get pregnant, or women shouldn’t have children if they’re in a very stressful environment,’” Springer said. “That is a knee-jerk reaction. But that would be a disservice to everyone.”

Instead, the team hopes these findings lead to further studies that examine how specific hospital environments — and their gender ratios, policies on parental leave, required hours, and even prevalence of sexism — might be impacting their pregnant staff members.

As part of their study, the researchers analyzed the impact of two workforce reforms (in 2003 and 2011), which limited the number of hours physician trainees could work. Although they found a negligible impact on birth outcomes, this shift was too minor and impacted too small a cohort to make any sweeping conclusions. But the team does see workforce reform as a potential solution for physician mothers. Many women surgeons report experiencing high levels of sexism, which can add to their overall stress. And some hospitals don’t offer accommodations to help expecting parents reduce their stress levels while continuing to work. These issues can be fixed.

But because expecting mothers cannot always control their work environment, Springer thinks it’s critical that mothers at least understand the potential risk their jobs could pose to their pregnancies.

“Unfortunately, in the United States, pregnant women, especially Black pregnant women, have to be advocates for themselves,” Springer said. She recommends pregnant women talk to their doctors about their jobs.

This risk might not be limited to physicians and surgeons. The team launched their exploration by focusing on a typically well-educated, higher-income population, which is likelier to have access to high-quality healthcare and inherent knowledge about their health. Because those qualities are often associated with more positive birth outcomes, these effects could potentially be lower than other physically demanding or high-stress jobs, like fast food workers, firefighters, or even delivery truck drivers — one group Springer would be curious to examine further. The team’s current Texas dataset has this bonus: Demographically, Texas is like a mini U.S. That makes it more reasonable to extrapolate any results to the broader country.

Next, the team is planning to refine and publish their results, use the Texas dataset to explore other maternal questions, and potentially analyze how specific hospital environments could contribute to negative birth outcomes for physician mothers.

“The take-home is actually if there is an impact on infant health, we should figure out how to mitigate that,” Anupam said. “The idea here is to figure out how you can do something right and do it safely.”

Wildflowers dot the meadows and bighorn sheep are commonly seen this time of year, too. Popular hikes and vistas become busy this time of year, and you'll need to reserve a timed entry permit available on July 1, but you can easily find quieter options among the park's 355 miles of trails. Combat the crowds by arriving early in the day and taking the park's shuttles instead of driving.

Texas Residents Call Trump a 'Traitor' Ahead of Border Visit

T exas residents near the United States-Mexico border say that "Eagle Pass has nothing to gain" from Donald Trump 's impending visit on Thursday, referring to the Republican Party presidential frontrunner as a "traitor."

The former president is planning to show up at the immigration debate epicenter on the same day that President Joe Biden will visit Brownsville to meet with U.S. Border Patrol agents, law enforcement and local officials.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott and sympathetic conservative governors nationwide have used Eagle Pass as a symbol to show record-high numbers of migrant surges, which dwindled in January to 68,260 illegal crossings —dropping from 149,806 migrants in December, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection statistics. Abbott has claimed credit due to the placement of concertina wire, floating barriers in the Rio Grande, and employing large numbers of soldiers to combat illegal flows.

In mid-February, Abbott announced from Eagle Pass that an 80-acre construction had begun to develop an expansive military base camp for some 1,800 Texas National Guard soldiers, extending along the Rio Grande and six miles south to Shelby Park. The governor said it would allow soldiers to "operate more effectively and more efficiently" in detracting illegal immigrants.

"[The visit] has nothing to offer Eagle Pass, and Eagle Pass has nothing to gain from it," the Eagle Pass Border Coalition, a group with 476 followers on Facebook at the time of writing, said in a post on Monday evening. "Not welcome here and you know it. Not a leader but a loser. Not a president, but a contender. Not a rebel but a threat. Not a friend but an enemy. Not a patriot but a traitor.

"Eagle Pass deserves better. Maverick County deserves better. Texas deserves better. America deserves better. We deserve better."

Newsweek reached out to the Trump campaign via email for comment.

A spokesperson for the coalition told Newsweek via phone on Tuesday evening that Trump's visit is a political stunt, and that immigration is part of a much broader concern that does not include just the U.S.

"The issue is climate change, and one country cannot affect climate change," the spokesperson said. "We need to address that as a planet. This is the first trickle of what is going to be the largest scale of humanity our planet has ever seen—and we can't fix that problem with World War II-era laws."

When asked if Biden should exercise executive authority to deter migrants following Republicans ' failure to pass any border-related legislation earlier this month, she said she is not an immigration expert "but somebody needs to do something."

The House of Representatives "has done less than anyone else," she added.

"I think our House of Representatives should go to work and not take a break and pass some laws," she said. "They're not doing anything. I think the Senate has a responsibility to send some bills to act on. I think our president has the responsibility within his power to make sure our nation is strong."

Locals and coalition members are calling Trump's anticipated visit "a brazen attempt to distract attention from his upcoming criminal and civil trials," citing his legal entanglements and using immigration as a key issue to attract supporters ahead of the November election.

They also took a verbal jab at Abbott, who they claim recently stayed "for less than an hour" before departing via helicopter following a podium speech.

On February 7, in the midst of heightened tensions between Abbott and the Biden administration, including legal battles that reached the U.S. Supreme Court , the coalition criticized the governor in a letter—referring to his efforts to turn Eagle Pass into a "military-style staging ground...as a backdrop for political theater."

The group questions whether Trump will mimic Abbott's actions by making a pulpit speech and swiftly leaving without "listening to the voices and concerns of our people" or dismissing them altogether.

"Will you take time to visit our missions and talk to our church leaders? Will you show any respect or interest for the rich history and culture of Eagle Pass, a city that prides itself on its diversity and harmony? Will you recognize the challenges and opportunities facing our border community, such as trade, security, environment and immigration? Or will he just throw out his usual lies, insults and conspiracy theories, fanning the flames of hate and division?" the Facebook post said.

Update, 2/28/24, 8:30 a.m. ET: This article was updated with comment from a spokesperson for the Eagle Pass Border Coalition.

Pro immigrant protesters hold up signs near Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, Texas, on February 4, 2024. Eagle Pass, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) from Quemado, has become the epicenter of a prickly conflict between Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, and the Biden administration. Donald Trump is expected to visit the town on February 29, the same day that Biden will be in Brownsville.
