On the lakeshore's roughly 100 miles of hiking trails, travelers can see everything from spring wildflowers to colorful fall foliage to stunning ice formations, depending on the season. Mackinac Island's old-world charm (think: horse-drawn carriages and Victorian-style buildings) creates the perfect backdrop for a romantic getaway or family vacation. The island banned cars in 1898, so tourists – or Fudgies as locals call them – can only access the island by private boat, ferry or plane. Once on Mackinac, visitors can taste some of its world-famous fudge, tour historical sites like Fort Mackinac and explore the island's state park, which covers more than 80% of the island. Keep in mind, though, that many of Mackinac Island's attractions are closed during the winter months despite the island being accessible year-round.

Lace up your hiking boots to explore the park's 35-plus miles of trails, get out on the Tahquamenon River on a kayak or snap a photo in front of the Upper Tahquamenon Falls, Michigan's largest waterfall. Keep in mind, travelers will need a valid Michigan Recreation Passport to gain admission to the park.

Michigan Summer Bucket List

Take a Summer Family Vacation in Michigan

One of the best parts about living in Michigan is that we have so many great options for family vacations – you can cross the bridge and experience the wilderness of the Upper Peninsula, you can pack your sunscreen and spend time on the shores of Lake Michigan, or you can get the best of both experiences when you plan a summer family vacation on Michigan’s Thumbcoast .

Michigan’s Thumbcoast , which stretches 140 miles along Lake Huron’s shorelines, features outdoor recreational opportunities for everyone in your family. Furthermore, the area’s beach towns are brimming with indoor activities that will allow you and your children to develop your creative sides on a wet summer day.

The Thumbcoast is the ideal destination to check off your summer bucket list if you want to hike the trail systems, view the northern lights , go to a theater, climb a lighthouse, learn something new at a museum, or do all of the above.

With two peninsulas and shorelines on four Great Lakes, there’s much to see by visiting any of Michigan’s 101 state parks, from immaculate beaches to forests to historic sites. Some of the best state parks in Michigan include:

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park on the western side of the Upper Peninsula is the largest of Michigan’s state parks. Forests cover half of this park on Lake Superior, and it’s speckled with more than 90 miles of hiking trails and rivers, creating opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and much more.

Hartwick Pines State Park  is one of the biggest state parks in the Lower Peninsula and sits about 200 miles northwest of Detroit. It’s lush with white pines, and miles of trails and two lakes provide plenty of excitement for hikers, campers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Palms Book State Park near Manistique in the Upper Peninsula is one of Michigan’s most beautiful sites. It’s home to Kitch-iti-kipi , also known as the Mirror of Heaven. Visitors can ride a short distance to this crystal-clear spring and marvel at its beauty.

Saugatuck Dunes State Park on the Lake Michigan shoreline has rolling dunes that roll more than 200 feet over Lake Michigan. The park has 13 miles of hiking trails and 2.5 miles of shoreline too.

The  Silver Creek Disc Golf Park in Harvey in the Upper Peninsula is considered one of the state’s most technical and challenging. It sits almost entirely within the woods of Chocolay Park and is a must-play course for any disc golfer.

The  Tailings in Iron River provides a little bit of everything — paved trails, campgrounds, and views of Iron County — all while playing a course that sits atop a former mining area.

Earle Brewer Park in Grand Rapids is one of several courses in the city and has 36 holes on its course. The south course is a challenge for more advanced players, but it sits among some fantastic scenery in West Michigan.

Chippewa Banks Disc Golf Course in Midland is compact but beautiful. It provides a scenic view of the Chippewa River and plenty of on its 18 holes.

As zoos go, the Detroit Zoo is a mecca in the Mitten State. There’s no better way to spend a day, and a visit to the Detroit Zoo offers fun for the whole family. Whatever your favorite animal is, there’s a good chance that the Detroit Zoo has it.

You can take the zoo’s train to the farthest points of the zoo, and then take your time exploring as you work your way back to the entrance. The Penguin Conservation Center, the Arctic Ring of Life, and the African Grasslands are just a few of the most popular habitats at the zoo.

There’s nothing that will make your inner child come to life more than seeing all the wonderful animals. A day here is definitely a day well spent.

It’s also a great place to stretch your legs after catching a Tigers game at Comerica Park in downtown Detroit!

Eat Michigan’s Best Pasties

If you’re traveling in the Upper Peninsula this summer, you absolutely have to stop for a pasty. These delicacies are simple — a mix of beef, potatoes, and rutabagas that’s baked in a flaky golden crust of dough. Some of the best pasty shops in Michigan include:

The Hut Inn — This Calumet establishment dates back to 1952 and is considered one of Michigan’s best. It can ship pasties all over the nation but also offers a drive-up window where you can pick up a fresh pasty on your travels.

Explore the Kal-Haven Trail

Stretching more than 30 miles between Kalamazoo and South Haven, the Kal-Haven Trail offers a little bit of everything for those who love being outside. It’s perfect for bikers, hikers, and runners alike and winds through woods, farmland, rivers, and streams.

Wow, I can tell from your pictures that Michigan really is stunning! Other than layovers in Detroit and a trip to Ann Arbor when I was in 6th grade, I haven't spent any time in Michigan. I noticed that Detroit was named one of the most vegan-friendly cities in the country. Any thoughts on it?

I am visiting Michigan for the first time. I want to spend 4 days each in two different locations. I was thinking Munising and Traverse City. Thoughts?

January 13, 2019 at 4:29 pm

Both of those are great locations for your first visit to Michigan! Traverse City is one of my favorite places to visit. You'll have a very scenic drive from Traverse City to Munising. Pictured Rocks in Musing is a great spot of visit during the summer. I highly recommend doing the Pictured Rocks Cruise. It is a great way to see them. And if you are into hiking, definitely plan on doing so hiking! I think that 4 days in both locations will allow you to see what each place has to offer! If you have any specific questions, feel free to send me an email at [email protected] .

visit michigan in summer

The vibrant streets of Detroit City are one of the best places to visit in Michigan © PQK / Shutterstock

Michigan ’s mojo comes from its beaches, forests and small towns. Visitors often are surprised to learn that four of the five Great Lakes clasp the state and that more than half of it is covered by timberland.

What’s a visitor to do amid all of this natural bounty? We’ve got answers, and don’t worry, you’ll get an urban fix, too. Here are the best places to visit in Michigan.

Best place for art and nightlife

It’s hard not to fall for the infectious, can-do spirit of Detroit . The edgy public art scene meets you at every turn, from the multi-block, polka-dotted Heidelberg Project to the 100-plus murals remaking the warehouses of Eastern Market . Traditionalists can ogle one of the world’s best collections at the Detroit Institute of Arts .

Come nighttime, the city rocks, and live music spills out of clubs like Baker’s Keyboard Lounge , a stuck-in-time jazz hotbed. Design hotels and homey restaurants in once-abandoned buildings add to the buzz.

Planning tip:  Detroit is easy on the wallet, with plenty of free things to do .

Sand dunes on the edge of a body of water with the sun setting

2. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Best place for days at the beach

One of Michigan’s unheralded national parks , Sleeping Bear Dunes spreads across 35 miles of prime Lake Michigan shoreline. There are two main ways to absorb the true-blue lake views. One is the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive , a 7-mile, one-lane, picnic-grove-studded loop. The other is the Dune Climb , which entails slogging up a 200ft-high sand pile. It will punish your leg muscles, but the summit view of panoramic, Caribbean-hued water is worth it.

The park’s 14 beaches and 100 miles of forested hiking trails provide more gorgeous vistas, and many families return here year after year to enjoy them.

3. Traverse City

Best place for couples

It may only have about 15,000 residents, but Traverse City is northern Michigan’s “big” city, with the superb restaurants and cool-cat shops to prove it. Beach lounging, parasailing, cycling bucolic trails and kayaking to breweries with outfitters like Paddle TC provide the action.

Detour: Vineyards blanket the nearby Old Mission Peninsula, where ten wineries in 18 miles pour chardonnays and pinot noirs. The area has the same microclimate as France's Bordeaux and Italy’s Piedmont regions, and the results are equally delicious. Brys Estate and Peninsula Cellars show how it’s done, with bottles perfect for a beach picnic.

A car-free street lined with young and old people riding bicycles

4. Mackinac Island

Best place for families

A zippy 20-minute ferry ride from the mainland, Mackinac Island is a petite charmer speckled with fudge shops, Victorian cottages and 18th-century hilltop forts. Cars are banned, and all travel is by horse-drawn carriage or bicycle, enhancing the time-warp vibe.

It only takes an hour to cycle around the island — it’s one of Michigan’s top experiences — but allow more time and detour to Fort Mackinac , where costumed interpreters fire cannons (always a big kid pleaser).

Planning tip: Mackinac hushes at night after the day trippers depart, and a million stars blink in the dark sky.

5. Isle Royale National Park

Best place for unspoiled wilderness

Morning fog wisps over the lake. You hear sloshing on the shore and see a moose plop in for a drink. A loon calls – or is it a wolf howling? Either is probable on Isle Royale, one of the least-visited national parks in the US .

The 45-mile-long island floats by its lonesome in Lake Superior, a three- to six-hour ferry ride from Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. The unspoiled forest has no roads – just 165 miles of hiking trails, 36 rustic campgrounds and one lone lodge. Treks range from the multi-day, island-spanning Greenstone Ridge Trail to the easy-but-dramatic Stoll Trail.

6. Saugatuck

Best place for LGBTQI+ travelers

Known for its golden beaches, piney breezes, fruit pies and a welcome-one-welcome-all mindset, Saugatuck draws boatloads of vacationers. Oval Beach ranks among Michigan's best for its soft sand and psychedelic sunsets. For a dramatic entrance, take the clackety Saugatuck Chain Ferry from downtown, then follow the path up and over the dunes. Artists can seek out the century-old Ox-Bow school in the woods for painting, glass blowing and metalsmithing lessons.

Planning tip: LGBTQI-friendly businesses proliferate in the area, including The Dunes , one of the country’s largest LGBTQI resorts.

A man kayaking past a multi-colored cliff face in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Michigan

7. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Best place for kayaking and boating

This area of cliffs and caves shimmering with wild colors is the Upper Peninsula ’s top sight. The optics come from blue and green minerals that streak the red and yellow sandstone into an artist’s palette of hues. See them from the water to get the full scope.

Pictured Rocks Kayaking and other outfitters can set you up to paddle among arches, caverns, waterfalls and rock formations with names like Lovers Leap and Flower Vase. If that’s too much work, take a seat on Pictured Rock Cruises or glass-bottom Shipwreck Tours as they glide by the marvels.

8. Grand Rapids

Best place for craft beer breweries

The second-largest city in Michigan, Grand Rapids has gotten its groove on thanks to beer. Around 25 craft breweries operate in the city proper, plus heaps more in nearby towns. The Ale Trail takes you there. There are so many breweries around town that you can walk between many of them, and the bonus is the beers are relatively inexpensive.  Brewery Vivant is foremost among the lineup, pouring Belgian-style suds in an atmospheric old chapel.

Detour: When you get off the barstool, Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park awaits, where you can nose through exotic landscapes and eyeball works by world-famous chiselers.

9. Keweenaw Peninsula

Best place for fall colors

The rugged timberland of the Keweenaw Peninsula sits at the very top of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The region was once the world's greatest copper producer, and Keweenaw National Historic Park tells the story. But what you’re really here for is the Brockway Mountain Drive, which climbs high in the sky.

The 10-mile jaunt shows off terrific views of Lake Superior and is particularly stunning in early October when the leaves flame bright. The outdoorsy towns of Houghton and Copper Harbor bookend the peninsula. Both have breweries, snowboarding, mountain biking and ferries that sail to Isle Royale.

10. Holland

Best place for camping

Yes, the city of Holland is named after the European country. And yes, it has tulips, windmills and clogs in kitschy abundance. The real selling point, though, is  Holland State Park .

Its sprawling beaches are among the state's most popular, where vacationers come to splash in the waves, fish off the pier, hoist a sail, admire fiery sunsets and snap photos of Big Red, the lighthouse that watches over it all.

Planning tip: Camping is a must, especially in the beachside campgrounds a stone’s throw from Lake Michigan.

A shot looking outwards from the mouth of a cave to a snowy landscape. The cave is covered in icicles

11. Marquette

Best place for adrenaline sports

Want to explore the Upper Peninsula in all of its rugged, remote, independent-minded glory? Marquette makes a perfect base. It's the UP’s largest town and an adventure sports hotspot . Locals ski, snow bike and explore ice caves in winter, and kayak, rock climb and mountain bike in summer.

Much of the action happens at Presque Isle Park , a cliffy patch of forest jutting into Lake Superior north of downtown. Nearby Sugar Loaf Mountain offers easy hiking trails and glimpses of the northern lights. Everyone gathers at Black Rocks Brewery to discuss their feats and their bruises afterward.

A visit to Frankenmuth will make you forget that you are in the United States, and it is one of the most unique places in Michigan. It is called Michigan's little Bavaria because of the German-inspired experiences, from food and lodging to its year-round Christmas theme.

Start your visit at Bronner's CHRISTmas Wonderland, home of the world's largest Christmas store, which has been operating since 1945. You can pick up a personalized gift or just walk the complex that is the size of 1.5 football fields to admire the uniquely adorned trees and decorations.

Channel your inner German baker by taking a pretzel-making workshop at The Bavarian Inn and Bakery for a truly unique and fun experience. Take time to stroll through the village and experience the Bavarian Inn Castle shops; take a carriage ride or hop aboard the Bavarian Belle Riverboat for a trip down the Cass River .

While Frankenmuth has plenty of tourist attractions, there are many outdoor experiences that you can mix into your trip. You can rent a kayak and get a view of Frankenmuth from the Cass River, or take a drive to the covered bridge in the village, which is one of the most iconic images of the area. The wooden landmark is a nod to authentic German architecture and craftsmanship.

Beach on Beaver Island, Lake Michigan

Highlight: Stargazing from Beaver Island's secluded location on Lake Michigan away from city lights

Michigan has so many places to visit with stunning beauty and history, but Beaver Island is a standout because it is an island in the middle of Lake Michigan with a population of only 600, and so secluded that it is one of the best stargazing spots in the United States . It takes a bit more effort to get to Beaver Island, but the visit is worth the effort.

You can get to Beaver Island by a ferry or plane departing from Charlevoix. As the largest island in Lake Michigan and the largest among the 14 islands in the Beaver Island Archipelago, it has unspoiled beauty and is far away from city lights. The ecological diversity on the island makes paddling along The Beaver Island Water Trail a fun activity. Canoe or kayak along the designated 42 miles of paddle trails that go around the island for a close-up glimpse of native wildlife and waterfowl.

Beaver Island has hundreds of miles of scenic opportunities. You can just take a drive without an agenda and enjoy stumbling on the lighthouses, historic cabins, wildflowers, and scenery that you find.

For those who make conservation a priority when traveling, you will appreciate the "leave no trace" principles instituted on the island, designed to help preserve the ecosystem that exists here and the species like bald eagles that call it home.

Paddle wheel riverboat in Saugatuck, Michigan

Highlight: Thriving arts scene where you can take home your own handmade masterpiece

The charm of Saugatuck , located in southwest Michigan, is its arts scene, which makes it one of the best places to visit in the state. The town's history is entrenched in the Arts and Crafts Movement of the late 1800s, which carries through to today. You will find dozens of art galleries in town with artists of many mediums showcasing their work.

Saugatuck is nicknamed the "art coast of Michigan," so you will find that to be the backdrop of your visit. Drop into an open arts class at the Ox-Bow School to learn how to create something new, or find a one-of-a-kind item to take home from one of the arts fairs that take place in the town.

Art is not the only beauty in town, Saugatuck has a stunning beach scene and notable sunsets on the Lake Michigan shoreline. There is plenty of hiking in the area at Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area or at the Saugatuck Dunes State Park.

No visit to Saugatuck is complete without a paddleboat cruise down the Kalamazoo River.

Rock Harbor Lighthouse, Isle Royale National Park

Highlights: Outdoor activities in a remote region, landmarks significant to the fishing and mining history of the area

Isle Royale National Park in Michigan is as pristine as its name makes it sound. It is located on the U.S.–Canadian border and is a must-visit if you have extra time to plan in your Michigan itinerary, given its distance. Isle Royale is only 45 miles long and has nearly 400 islands surrounding it in Lake Superior.

The wilderness feel of Isle Royale is for those who want to experience Michigan's unspoiled beauty in a peaceful getaway and not the tourist locations. It is great for hikers, bikers, kayakers, and backpackers.

As you travel around the island, you will see remnants of Isle Royale's rich history in the mining and fishing industries. Drive by the Rick Harbor Lighthouse and look for important pieces of history, like the Kemmer cottage in Tobin Harbor and some of the historic resorts that hosted some of America's elite in the early 1900s.

You can get to Isle Royale by ferry or seaplane from Houghton, Grand Portage, Copper Harbor, or Grand Marais.

Address: 800 East Lakeshore Drive, Houghton, Michigan

Given Michigan's vast outdoor scenery, which offers a much different experience in the Upper Peninsula versus the Lower Peninsula, the best time to visit depends on what you plan to do during your visit. Spring and summer are great times to visit, but since you are near the water in many of the top locations, temperatures can get chilly in the evening.

Spring temperatures in April and May start to warm into the 50s (Fahrenheit) during the day and dip into the mid-30s at night. This is the best time to visit to see trees and flowers coming into bloom and to visit places like Holland for the tulip festival.

The temperatures in the summer months of June, July, and August can range from the high 70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit. These are the best times to experience Michigan's many beaches, go hiking and biking, and visit places like Mackinac Island that only operate seasonally.

The autumn months of September, October, and November are the best months to visit Michigan for fall foliage, which is a must-experience. Early autumn temperatures still range in the low 70s, but daytime temperatures will drop quickly into the 50s and 40s as the season progresses.

Winter can be brutal in Michigan, but the months of December, January, and February are the best times to visit to experience the hard-core outdoor opportunities like skiing, ice climbing, and photographing ice caves in the Upper Peninsula. You likely won't see high temperatures out of the 20s, and lows can reach -20 ° Fahrenheit.

8 Best Michigan Beaches to Visit this Summer

' src=

No other state offers the most number of beaches and lakefronts than Michigan, so if you’ve decided on checking out Michigan beaches for your next trip, you’re in for a treat. The state has PLENTY of good beach opportunities for you and I, which can be overwhelming if you’re trying to decide just one beach town at a time.

To make it a bit easier for you, I grouped my favorite Michigan beaches into two – (1) the go-to beaches with hotels, restaurants, and their downtowns nearby and (2) beaches with a more relaxed vibe.

Michigan Beaches with a Nightlife

Michigan beaches are known mostly for their chill vibe. Many of the beaches I found within the state (and locally recommended) are hidden gems with very few facilities, especially those not part of a park). However, there are a handful of spots that have a livelier atmosphere than the rest.

They include Silver Beach, Grand Haven, and Oval Beach in the Saugatuck/Douglas area.

1. Silver Beach

St. Joseph Beach, Michigan

  • Location: Saint Joseph (-94 Exit 16, three miles southeast of Bridgman on Red Arrow Hwy)
  • Nearby beaches : Other Saint Joseph beaches that are less touristy include Weko beach, Lions Park, Warren Dunes State Park, Rocky Gap Park. Grand Mere State Park, and Jean Klock Park.

Silver Beach is located within Silver Beach County Park in Saint Joseph, Michigan. It is a favorite summertime spot for both locals and tourists. 1,600 feet of the 2,450 feet of Lake Michigan frontage is exclusive for public swimming in the summer months. The park also has lakefront camping (about 197 campsites) with electricity and running water, as well as a ton of family-friend facilities.

Don’t miss the Silver Beach Carousel – it’s an awesome sight to behold. The Silver Beach area transforms into a place for cross-country skiing in winter and a hunting venue in the Fall.

2. Grand Haven City Beach

Grand Haven Beach

  • Location : South Harbor Drive, West Michigan
  • Nearby beaches : North Beach, Kirk Park, Rosy Mound Natural Area, Olive Shores (where Tom Hanks’ Road to Perdition was filmed), and P.J. Hoffmaster State Park.

Two West Michigan beaches, Grand Haven City Beach and Grand Haven State Park. are located along Harbor Avenue south of Grand Haven State Park on Lake Michigan. Both offer modern facilities and proximity to the downtown area, the Grand Haven Pier and two red lighthouses.

Grand Haven has a $9 a day entrance fee to the state park, but you have access to everything. It can be busy during the summer months, but if you’re after the crowds, events and a bit of nightlife, then the Grand Haven beaches should make your stay worthwhile.

3. Oval Beach

Oval Beach in iMichigan

  • Location : Saugatuck/Douglas (Perryman St. & Oval Beach Drive)
  • Nearby beaches : West Side County Park, Laketown Beach, Pier Cove Beach, Douglas Beach, Saugatuck Dunes State Park.

This beach has been included in many US top-10 beaches lists in recent years, including MTV’s Top 5 Beaches in the USA and National Geographic Traveler’s Top Freshwater Beaches in the USA). One look at its sweeping shoreline amidst a backdrop of rolling dunes, and you’ll get why this is a special place.

These days, the area is known for two things:

  • High-end antiques and art from locals, giving the Saugatuck and Douglas area an adorable nickname of “The Great Art-Doors.”  Be sure to check Saugatuck Antique Pavilion and Saugatuck Center for the Arts .
  • Gay-friendly events thanks to the   Dunes Resort and events like Dunes Diva competition and Drag Queen Bingo that it hosts regularly.

Low-Key Michigan Beaches for a Relaxing Getaway

4. silver lake sand dunes.

Silver Lake Sand Dunes Beach

  • Location: Between Ludington and Muskegon (North Comfort Drive, Hart, Michigan)
  • Nearby Beaches : Little Sable Point Lighthouse, Golden Township Park, Claybanks Township Park, Cedar Point County Park, Benona County Park, Mears State Park.

Silver Lake Sand Dunes is like a world of its own. The area is perfect for all kinds of water activities like swimming, boating and just playing around the sand. But it is also a place where you could golf, hike, explore the dunes (there are over 2,000 acres of sand dunes in the area alone).

Getting to the beach can be tricky though since you’d have to walk about 45 minutes from the Silver Lake parking area to get to the beach. If you arrived in a 4×4 wheeler or off-road vehicle, you can go straight over to the dunes and onto the beach.

5. Tawas Point State Park Beach

Tawas Point State Park Beach

  • Location : Tawas Beach Rd, East Tawas, MI

Known as the “Capecod of the Midwest,” this 183-acre park is located along Lake Huron at the end of a sand spit that forms Tawas Bay. The waters here are shallow, making it a favorite beach for families with young kids. (You do have to pay closer attention to children since the area has no lifeguard on the beach.

Aside from the picturesque beach, people can also go bird watching by the Lake Huron Flyaway where over 300 bird species migrate each year.

East Tawas has such a lovely small-town vibe, where you can enjoy the local farmer’s market on Saturday mornings, or meet new people during its county fair and blues festival.

6. Pere Marquette Park Beach

Pere Marquette Park Beach Michigan

  • Location : Muskegon
  • Nearby Beaches : Blue Lake County Park, Twin Lake County Park, Ross Park, Pioneer County Park, Norman F. Kruse Park, Muskegon State Park, Moore County Park, Meinert County Park, Lake Harbor Park and Duck Lake STate Park.

It is located within a 27.5-acre park with 2.5 miles of long, sandy public beach bordered on the north by the Muskegon Channel. The water quality is exceptional, but it can be quite windy at the beach.

Pere Marquette is one of the most well-maintained Michigan beaches in Muskegon. You can fish, swim, sail, and just hang out. Entrance to the beach is free with restrooms and other amenities found near the parking area.

If you’re coming here with kids, you can visit the nearby amusement park, called Michigan’s Adventure and take a quick detour with its water park and roller coasters.

7. Riley Street Beach

  • Location: Holland
  • Nearby beaches: Holland State Park beach, Kirk Park, Tunnel Park

This off-the-beaten-path beach is truly a hidden gem that most mainstream Holland tour guides don’t even include it on their official Holland Michigan beaches. But if you’re nearby and is on a hunt to explore all Holland beaches, then this would surely make your beach-heart happy.

Riley Street Beach is very near the Riley Trails and is a favorite stopover for those exploring the 300-acre trail. Note that the water on this beach isn’t shallow and winds can be brutal, which is why local surfers flock to the area if the conditions are perfect for surfing.

8. Empire Beach

Empire Beach Michigan

  • Location : 10484 Niagara Street, Empire, MI
  • Nearby : Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

This dog-friendly, family-favorite, public beach is located a block from downtown Empire.

Empire beach is a small section of beach National Geographic named one of the top 21 beaches in the world, thanks to the pure fresh water, perfect sand, vast views over Lake Michigan, and the Robert H. Manning Memorial Lighthouse nearby.

On top of water activities like boating, fishing and swimming, there are bird-watching, hiking, playground-playing opportunities for everyone at Empire Beach.

What makes Empire beach special is it is the spot where the warm waters of North Bar Lake spill into the cool waters of Lake Michigan, so you kinda get to experience both by just swimming on the beach.

Beyond Michigan Beaches

If you have more time and want to explore the awesome Michigan state, here are some cool attractions you might want to check out:

  • The Mackinac Bridge (located in Mackinaw City, Michigan) is one of the most famous US bridges . It is considered the world’s longest suspension bridge between anchorages (and isn’t for the faint-hearted to pass).
  • Tahquamenon Falls (found in Paradise, Michigan), called endearingly the “Rootbeer Falls” for its unique brown colors, is one of my favorite hidden falls in the country . This is a must-see stop, especially if you’re visiting during the fall season.
  • Nature trip at Silver City, Michigan – Another cool destination that shows off spectacularly vibrant fall colors , Silver City is home of the Porcupine Mountains.
  • Northern Lights from Keweenaw Penninsula, Michigan – Head on to Keweenaw Penninsula in Michigan around October or November if you’re on the hunt for a good spot to view Aurora Borealis without going overseas.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park Michigan

There’s also Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes of North America that encompasses the states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and (mostly northern) Michigan. If you’re a diver, don’t miss the snorkeling or diving tours that guide you through 1 in over 1500 shipwrecks that call Lake Michigan home.

And if you can, take time to visit Mackinac Island and marvel at the area’s old-world Victorian charm, water activities, biking, horseback riding, and local events to actually get to meet the people there. Don’t forget to buy some fudge – it is Mackinac Island’s most popular export nowadays, so much so that they hold an annual fudge festival every August.

Travel info, summer in the upper peninsula: a sensational time to visit, why summer is the most popular season in the u.p..

Summer in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is naturally sun warmed and lake breeze cooled. It entices you to walk barefoot through crystal clear, salt-free water. To hunt for puddingstones and semi-precious agates. Eat melt-in-your-mouth fudge. Grill just-caught whitefish or roast farm-fresh vegetables. Unite family or long-time friends around campfires singing songs, telling ghost stories and remembering when…

It’s an adventurous season when you hike mountains, bike along waterfronts, search for shipwrecks, and shop for Stormy Kromer hats, copper art, tangy thimbleberry jam, crisp Trenary toast and keepsakes to remind you of the U.P. after you go home.

Below is a sampling of what brings people in the summer. What you will discover is they will keep you coming back, too.

Summer weather | What to pack | Best things to do |  Where to stay and eat |  Top places to visit

What our summer weather is like

Most daytime temperatures are warm enough to enjoy splashing in the abundant fresh water, but not so unbearably hot that you retreat to air-conditioned rooms. However, on any given day our weather varies across the Upper Peninsula. It can be sweatshirt temperatures and sunny in St. Ignace, foggy in Sault Ste Marie, raining hard and windy in Copper Harbor and sultry in Menominee, then in seemingly a blink of an eye, the weather can change where you are to a whole-new summery experience. Check weather forecasts and current weather conditions as you cross the peninsula.

The warmest months to visit the Upper Peninsula

If you want to wear a short-sleeve shirt during the day and a light jacket at night, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) data says the best time to visit the U.P. is May 28 to September 9. The hottest months are July, August and then June. In mid-July, expect highs around 78.4°F (25.8°C) with temperatures rarely dropping below 57°F at night.

What to pack for your U.P. summer vacation

The Upper Peninsula is mostly wilderness and there can be many miles between fuel stations and convenience stores. Cell phone and GPS reception can be spotty in some areas. As you pack your vehicle, U.P. locals and AAA recommend carrying:

  • Cell phone and charger
  • Waterproof jacket, sweatshirt and waterproof boots. There are rare times when summer temperatures can become very chilly so pack an extra-warm fleece or jacket, gloves or mittens and winter hat.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen lotion or spray
  • First aid kit and matches
  • Reflective emergency triangles or flares
  • Jumper cables
  • Flashlight or portable lantern with extra batteries
  • Drinking water, refillable water bottle and non-perishable snacks
  • Basic tool kit
  • Printed maps for your destinations
  • Paper towels or rags
  • Insect repellent for mosquitoes, ticks, stable flies and black flies. Find an insect repellent that is right for you and the U.P. environment

Be sure to read  Eight Things to Know Before You Go to the Upper Peninsula and 8 Easy-to-Do Tips for Sustainable Travel in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula .

Best things to do this summer in the U.P.

Spend time by the water..

The Upper Peninsula is the only land mass in the world with shores on three of the greatest freshwater lakes — Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Lake Superior. Add to this, 4,300 inland lakes and 12,000 miles of rivers and streams. Embrace your outdoor water sports passions swimming, boating, sailing, paddling, parasailing, kite boarding, windsurfing, wakeboarding, water skiing, rafting, scuba diving, snorkeling and surfing. Go fishing, build sandcastles, collect beach glass, rocks and fossils, fly kites, walk for miles or sit and read a book. Simply add our water to all of your vacation days. Go to the beach

Encounter the true grit stories of miners, lumberjacks and barons.

While timber was an economic boon to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the iron ore and copper rushes put this region on the international map. Immerse in the stories and actually experience what being a miner or lumberjack was like. Tour tunnels, rappel down mining shafts, dig for rocks and minerals and cheer competing loggers. Unforgettable mining and timber experiences.

Go waterfalling.

The U.P. is home to all but one of Michigan’s waterfalls. From whispering waters that gently caress the rock surface and flow into small creeks to the thundering falls cascading towering cliffs, this is the place to come to see 300+ waterfalls in action. Create a waterfall tour

Visit over 40 historic lighthouses.

Shine a light on a fascinating part of Michigan’s maritime history. Although some of these sentinels of the Great Lakes are inactive, many continue to guide ships and boats safely into harbors and around dangerous shoals. Whether you hike or take a boat tour, you’re able to get up close and, sometimes, even go inside. Find lighthouses along your vacation route

Hit the trails — hiking, biking or off-roading.

Name your favorite outdoor passion and the U.P. has the trails to create hours (even weeks) of adventures. Hiking in the Upper Peninsula is as close to an untamed wilderness as you will find in the contiguous United States. The trail systems take you up mountains, along rugged and soft sandy shores, deep into the woods and hiker-welcoming historic towns. Biking trails cater to families wanting to leisurely cruise along paved paths and roads in bicycle friendly communities or to the gutsiest bikers twisting, turning and going airborne on internationally acclaimed mountain bike trails .

The U.P. is also a premier destination for thrill seekers. Bring your baddest ATV/ORV/UTV for hours of adrenaline-surging, bone-jarring, mud-spattering, white-knuckle off-roading. Our wilderness screams to see how far it can push your fun.

Boost your endorphins at local festivals and fairs.

There isn’t a week in the summer that doesn’t showcase either music, art, bike, foot or watercraft races, fishing tournaments and best-of-show classic cars or boats, homegrown fruits and vegetables, farm animals and so much more. Add these summer events to your calendar

Don’t overlook these unique things to do.

There are dozens of experiences that are U.P-centric. Whether it’s crossing the mighty Mackinac Bridge, seeing shipwrecks from a glass-bottomed boat or deciding if the Paulding Mystery Light is a paranormal happening. Try these unique things to do

Watch the sunrise and sunset every day.

When you have 1,700 miles of Great Lakes coastline and thousands of inland lakes, dunes and mountaintops, you can find premier places to watch the sun come up on eastern horizons and then sink to the west. The splash of colors across the sky and water is a reason to put your life on hold for a few minutes each day. For a boast-about experience, take a sunset cruise by Pictured Rocks or under the Mackinac Bridge .

See more stars at some of the darkest places in the world.

Most of us never see how star filled the night sky is. City and neighborhood lights blot out the view. Not so in the Upper Peninsula There is very little light pollution and our proximity to the North Pole provides some of the best stargazing and Northern Lights viewing in the contiguous 48 states. It’s why the U.P. is home to one of Michigan’s three International Dark Sky Parks. But wherever you are in the U.P. on a cloudless night, look up. It will take your breath away. Your guide to stargazing in the U.P.

Where to stay and delicious places to eat

Although it is a wilderness area, the Upper Peninsula has many lodgings with the amenities and rates you want, near favorite places to visit and the things you want to do. Since summer is our busiest time of the year, reserve your hotel, resort, campground or other lodgings as early as you know your vacation dates. We highly recommend making summer reservations several months to a year in advance for bookings in July and August. Places to stay

The U.P. has attracted some wonderful chefs and also has long-time restaurants that serve delicious foods made from recipes going back to Old World roots. Many of your restaurant choices have views of the water, woods and wildlife. Make reservations ahead when you can during this busy time of year. Places to eat

Spend your trip navigating nearby state parks; hiking, biking, and exploring; and enjoying everything that lake life has to offer, from jet-skiing to swimming.

Where to stay: Check out the Gould Hotel , a modern boutique property in Seneca Falls; book a night at The Lake House on Canandaigua for an airy, design-forward stay; or head east to the Inns of Aurora .

Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

Completely immerse yourself in nature at Minnesota's Voyageurs National Park. This gorgeous destination is ideal for getting in some of the best stargazing you could ever imagine. Just like dozens of other national parks , this one has an International Dark Sky Park certificate, designating it as a location that is particularly good for viewing the night sky and stars. Unlike the others, however, Voyageurs is one of the least-visited national parks in the country, meaning you'll be able to truly connect with nature and enjoy seclusion. It's ideal for boat rides and swimming, as it's primarily made up of waterfronts and islands—almost 40 percent of the park is water.

Where to stay: Nearby Cantilever Hotel is great for those interested in exploring the park, but not wanting to stay too far away from civilization. Those who are a little more daring will enjoy the Kettle Falls Hotel , a property that is only accessible by boat or seaplane. If you're really looking to be one with nature, you can rent a canoe and camp at a tent site.

Isle Royal National Park, Michigan

If you're looking for a summer vacation where you can explore an area relatively untouched by civilization, look no further than Isle Royal National Park . A favorite of my family, this park is uniquely difficult to get to (the main island is best reached by ferry), so the only other travelers you'll find here are extreme adventurers and in-the-know locals. It's best to visit during the summer months since Lake Superior is quite cold and foggy throughout the rest of the year. My family heads to this park in the summer months in hopes of spending a few days backpacking , canoeing, and hiking through the near-untouched environment—admiring the nature and wildlife along the way.

Michigan football locks in another summer official visit for elite safety

F or some reason, Michigan football isn't looked at as a haven of top-rated safeties in college football, yet, it has had a lot of success at the position.

Even those who weren't elite as recruits ended up having pretty nice pro careers. While five-stars such as Jabrill Peppers and Daxton Hill certainly draw headlines, there have been those such as Jarrod Wilson and Josh Metellus who have carved out a niche in the NFL through the years.

At the moment, Rod Moore and Makari Paige have locked down the roles while Quinten Johnson bolsters the group and Zeke Berry hopes for a bigger opportunity in 2024.

Michigan is garnering attention from top safeties, still, and one of them intends to visit Ann Arbor and to do so officially. 2025 Winston-Salem (N.C.) Mount Tabor four-star safety JaDon Blair may have a 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction indicating he'll end up at Notre Dame , but he won't make that type of decision before checking out the maize and blue. Blair announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he will be making an official visit to the Wolverines from June 14-16 -- the weekend before quarterback commit Carter Smith makes his way to campus .

https://twitter.com/Jadon_Blair2025/status/1768320310422524111?s=20

Blair is listed at 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, and is the No. 143 player in the 2025 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Penn State , North Carolina , and Virginia Tech also appear to be top contenders for his services.

Former Ravens Linebacker Pernell McPhee Joins Michigan Coaching Staff

  • Author: Isaiah De Anda Delgado

In this story:

Baltimore Ravens

Former Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman Pernell McPhee has found a new job in the collegiate ranks.

It's been announced that McPhee is taking a role supporting the Michigan Wolverines' defensive staff.

McPhee spent seven seasons with the Ravens and 11 seasons in the NFL, accumulating 38 sacks as an outside linebacker before retiring after the 2021 season.

Baltimore's 2011 fifth-round draft pick played under Michigan's new defensive coordinator, Wink Martindale, from 2019 to 2021. Following the signing, former Ravens starting offensive lineman Matt Skura weighed in on the hire.

"Great hire! Was fortunate to be a teammate of his, and Phee has an infectious personality that will energize the players, staff, and organization," Skura wrote on X.

Michigan is coming off of its first national championship in 26 years, largely due to its stellar defense. This defense figures to continue being dominant following the addition of McPhee, who was said to have coaching characteristics during his time in the NFL.

Interestingly enough, McPhee won a Super Bowl by beating the Wolverines' championship head coach, Jim Harbaugh, when he won with the Ravens back in 2013 and defeated Harbaugh's San Francisco 49ers.

Ravens Will Host Commanders For Two Joint Practices This Summer

Next season will be the first time in eight years that Harbaugh isn't coaching Michigan following his return to the NFL this offseason when he agreed to become the new head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.

Martindale and McPhee will attempt to help lead the Wolverines win its second straight National Championship, which hasn't been done by a Big Ten team since Nebraska in 1994 and 1995.

Cosmic explosion will be visible to the naked eye in once-in-a-lifetime stargazing event

Artist's concept of a star system featuring a white dwarf "stealing" matter from a companion star. After enough material accumulates, a white dwarf can erupt in a nova explosion.

A rare cosmic eruption is expected to occur in the Milky Way in the coming months — an outburst so bright that a “new” star will seemingly appear for a short time in the night sky.

The event, known as a nova, will be a once-in-a-lifetime skywatching opportunity for those in the Northern Hemisphere, according to NASA , because the types of star systems in which such explosions occur are not common in our galaxy.

The stellar eruption will take place in a system called T Coronae Borealis, which is 3,000 light-years away from Earth. It contains two stars: a dead star, also known as a “ white dwarf ,” closely orbited by a red giant . Red giants are dying stars that are running out of hydrogen fuel in their cores; the sun in our solar system will eventually become one, according to NASA.

In systems like T Coronae Borealis, the two stars are so near to each other that matter from the red giant is constantly spilling onto the surface of the white dwarf. Over time, this builds up pressure and heat, eventually triggering an eruption.

“As matter accumulates on the surface of the white dwarf, it heats up and you get higher and higher pressure until bang — it’s a runaway reaction,” said Bradley Schaefer, a professor emeritus of physics and astronomy at Louisiana State University.

He likened the nova explosion to a hydrogen bomb detonating in space, adding that the resulting fireball is essentially what people will be able to see from Earth. (A nova is different from a supernova explosion , which occurs when a massive star collapses and dies.)

At its peak, the eruption should be visible to the naked eye, Schaefer said: “It’s going to be bright in the sky, so it’ll be easily visible from your backyard.”

Astronomers predict that the nova explosion could happen anytime between now and September. The last time this particular star system erupted was in 1946, Schaefer said, and another eruption will likely not occur for another 80 years or so.

Astronomers around the world are monitoring activity in the T Coronae Borealis system. Once an eruption is detected, Schaefer said, the best and brightest views will likely come within 24 hours, when it reaches roughly the same brightness as the North Star. The outburst may remain visible to the naked eye for a couple of days before it begins to fade.

Even after it dims, skywatchers will likely still be able to spot the eruption for around a week using binoculars, according to NASA.

The constellation Corona Borealis appears as a small arc near Bootes and Hercules.

The T Coronae Borealis system is normally too dim to see unaided, but skywatchers can find the outburst by locating the constellation Corona Borealis, or the Northern Crown. The constellation will appear as a small, semicircular arc between the more widely recognizable constellations of Hercules and Bootes.

Schaefer, who has done extensive research on the T Coronae Borealis system, said it’s worth trying to catch a glimpse.

“This system happens to have a recurrence time scale under a century, but most of them have cycle times longer than 1,000 years or so,” he said.

In a paper published last year in the Journal for the History of Astronomy , Schaefer discovered two “long-lost” T Coronae Borealis eruptions in historical records — one documented by German monks in the year 1217 and another seen by the English astronomer Francis Wollaston in 1787.

“These monks near Augsburg, Germany, didn’t know what it was at the time, but they highlighted the eruption as being one of the two most important events of the year,” Schaefer said. “They called it in Latin ‘signum mirabile,’ which translates to ‘wonderful omen.’ It was thought to be a good sign.”

But pinpointing the exact time when skywatchers will have a chance to see this “wonderful omen” is tricky business.

“It could maybe even happen tonight,” Schaefer said. “More probably it’ll be within the next couple of months, and very probably before the end of summer.”
