Tips To Write Tourism Slogans

A good slogan is essential for any business, and the tourism industry is no exception. A catchy slogan can help to put your destination on the map and attract attention from potential visitors. But with so many destinations competing for attention, how do you make sure that your slogan stands out from the rest? Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Keep it short and sweet. A slogan should be easy to remember, so don’t try to cram too much information into a few words.
  • Use puns or wordplay to add interest.
  • Be specific. Vague slogans are quickly forgotten. Instead, focus on what makes your destination unique and appealing.
  • Use positive language. Focus on the benefits of visiting your destination, rather than listing its negative points.
  • Avoid clichés. With so many destinations vying for attention, you’ll need to be original to stand out from the crowd.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: A Review of Tourism Slogans from Around the World

Tourism slogans are short, memorable phrases that promote destinations and attract visitors. They are an important marketing tool for destinations, as they help to establish brand identity and differentiate a location from its competitors. A great tourism slogan should capture the essence of a destination and inspire travelers to visit and experience all that it has to offer. It should also have an emotional pull, evoking feelings of excitement, adventure, relaxation, or whatever other emotions are appropriate for the destination.  In this blog post, we will explore the history and significance of tourism slogans and showcase a collection of the best and worst ones from around the world.  We will also provide some tips for creating a great tourism slogan.

History of Tourism Slogans

The use of tourism slogans dates back to the early 20th century when destinations began to market themselves more aggressively to attract visitors. One of the first known tourism slogans was “See America First,” which the United States government used in the 1920s to encourage Americans to explore their own country before traveling abroad.

In the following decades, more destinations worldwide began to adopt their own tourism slogans to stand out in a crowded market. For example, the British government used ” Visit Britain ” in the 1950s to promote the country as a travel destination.

As tourism has evolved over the years, so have the slogans used to promote it. In the 1960s and 1970s, tourism slogans often focused on a destination’s natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities. For example, “New Zealand: 100% Pure” has been used by the New Zealand government since 1999 to promote the country’s unspoiled landscape and clean environment.

In recent years, tourism slogans have become more diverse and creative, with destinations using catchy and memorable phrases to appeal to travelers’ emotions and sense of adventure. Some examples of iconic tourism slogans from recent years include “Australia: Where the Bloody Hell Are You?” and “Spain: Passion for Life.”

The history of tourism slogans reflects the evolution of the travel industry and travelers’ changing priorities and interests. Whether it’s showcasing a destination’s natural beauty, cultural attractions, or unique character, the best tourism slogans capture the essence of a place and inspire travelers to visit and experience it for themselves.

How to Create a Great Tourism Slogan

Creating a great tourism slogan requires a combination of creativity, strategy, and cultural sensitivity. Here are a few tips for crafting a compelling and memorable tourism slogan:

  • Keep it simple: A great tourism slogan should be short, catchy, and easy to remember. Avoid using too many words or complex language.
  • Make it memorable: A memorable slogan is more likely to stick in people’s minds and encourage them to visit a destination. Use catchy phrases, wordplay, or alliteration to make your slogan stand out.
  • Reflect the destination’s unique character: A great tourism slogan should capture the essence of a destination and what makes it special. Think about the destination’s culture, history, attractions, and natural beauty, and use these elements to create a slogan that reflects its unique character.
  • Be culturally sensitive: It’s important to be mindful of cultural differences and sensitivities when crafting a tourism slogan. Avoid using stereotypes or promoting a one-dimensional image of a destination.
  • Test it out: Before finalizing a slogan, it’s a good idea to test it out with a focus group or through market research to see how it resonates with potential visitors. This will help ensure that the slogan is effective and well-received.

Tourism slogans are a powerful marketing tool that can help destinations attract visitors and establish brand identity. The best tourism slogans capture the essence of a destination and inspire travelers to visit and experience all that it has to offer. However, not all tourism slogans are successful, and some have even been criticized for being tone-deaf, offensive, or simply poorly executed. As this post has demonstrated, it’s important for destinations to be mindful and culturally sensitive when crafting a tourism slogan and to test it out with potential visitors to ensure that it resonates with them. Whether you’re looking for the best or the worst tourism slogans, there are plenty of examples from around the world to inspire your next adventure.

They encapsulate the essence of a place, promising unforgettable experiences and adventures. Whether it’s the allure of pristine beaches, the thrill of urban exploration, or the tranquility of nature escapes, these slogans are designed to capture your imagination and spark wanderlust.

Crafted to resonate with travelers worldwide, tourism slogans play a pivotal role in shaping perceptions and driving interest. They’re not just words; they’re invitations to explore, discover, and fall in love with places you’ve never been. As you jump into the world of tourism slogans, you’ll find that each one tells a story, inviting you on a journey that’s as unique as the destination it represents.

Table of Contents

Importance of Tourism Slogans

When you’re planning your next adventure, the first thing that might catch your eye is a catchy slogan. These aren’t just mere catchphrases; they’re the essence of a destination’s brand identity. Think of them as a compact story or an invitation, drawing you into the unique experience each place offers. In a world buzzing with travel options, a memorable slogan can be the difference between being overlooked and being top of mind.

Tourism slogans have a powerful role. They’re not just fancy words thrown together; they hook your interest and spark wanderlust. Picture this: you’re scrolling through social media, and you see a slogan saying “Incredible You.” It’s not just calling the destination incredible; it’s inviting you to discover a part of yourself there. This is how slogans work; they connect emotionally, making you feel like you’re missing out on something great.

  • Brand Identity : They give a place its personality, setting it apart from others.
  • Emotional Connection : Good slogans tap into your feelings, making the destination more appealing.
  • Memory Hooks : They’re designed to stick in your mind. Later on, when you’re thinking vacation, that slogan pops up.

Consider the impact of a well-crafted slogan. It’s not about overloading you with information; it’s about creating a feeling, an image, and an expectation. Whether it’s the promise of adventure, relaxation, or discovery, a good slogan sums up why a destination should be your next choice.

In the competitive world of tourism, destinations constantly seek ways to stand out. Slogans are a vital tool in this quest. They encapsulate the essence of a place and what it offers, often becoming as iconic as the destinations themselves. It’s not just about attracting tourists; it’s about promising them unforgettable experiences.

As you wander through the crowded marketplace of travel options, remember, these slogans are more than just marketing. They’re the beginning of your story with a destination. So next time one catches your eye, think about the journey it’s inviting you on.

Characteristics of Effective Tourism Slogans

Imagine you’re scrolling through your social media feed, and you see a slogan that makes you stop in your tracks. It’s catchy, it’s engaging, and it makes you want to learn more. That’s the power of an effective tourism slogan. But what exactly makes a slogan stand out? Let’s break it down.

Simplicity Is Key

First off, simplicity is crucial. A great tourism slogan is easy to remember and easy to understand. It doesn’t use complicated words or long sentences. Instead, it gets straight to the point. Think of it as the friendly “hello” that invites you in.

Emotion Over Information

While it’s tempting to pack a slogan with facts, the best ones tap into your feelings. They hint at an experience, an adventure, or a dream vacation awaiting you. It’s not just about telling you what you can do at the destination; it’s about making you feel what it would be like to be there. This emotional connection is what turns a simple phrase into an unforgettable promise.

Uniqueness and Memorability

Your destination isn’t like any other place on Earth, and your slogan should reflect that. An effective tourism slogan captures the unique character of a place. It’s memorable because it’s different. When a slogan echoes the unique vibe of a destination, it sticks with you long after you’ve read it.

Cultural Resonance

A great tourism slogan also resonates with its target audience on a cultural level. It might play on words, use humor, or tap into shared values and aspirations. By speaking the “language” of your intended audience, a slogan bridges the gap between the familiar and the new, inviting exploration and connection.

Incorporating these characteristics, tourism slogans become far more than just catchy phrases. They’re the opening lines to the story of a place, inviting you to step into a new experience. As you think about your next vacation, pay attention to the slogans that catch your eye and consider what makes them effective. You might just find your next destination calling to you through those carefully chosen words.

Examples of Tourism Slogans

Tourism slogans play a crucial role in attracting visitors to different destinations around the world. They’re not just catchy phrases; they encapsulate the essence of a place and what you can expect to experience there. Below are some examples of tourism slogans that have successfully captured the imagination of travelers globally.

“Incredible India” stands out as a prime example. This slogan invites curiosity and suggests that India offers an array of unbelievable experiences, from its rich cultural festivals to its breathtaking landscapes. It’s simple, memorable, and evokes a sense of wonder.

Moving over to a colder climate, “Iceland – Inspired by Iceland” connects with those who seek inspiration through travel. Iceland’s slogan taps into the emotional aspect of traveling, promising an awe-inspiring journey amidst its volcanic landscapes and northern lights.

For those yearning for a laid-back tropical paradise, “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” offers precisely that vibe. This slogan shines by highlighting the fun and vibrant culture of the Philippines, emphasizing the joy and warmth of its islands and people.

These slogans do more than just attract tourists; they also serve as a brand identity for the destinations. They’re designed to leave a lasting impression in your mind, making you yearn to visit and experience these places yourself.

Choosing the right words can make all the difference in tourism marketing. These slogans have succeeded not just by being catchy, but by speaking directly to the desires and emotions of travelers. They create a picture of the destination that is almost irresistible.

As you consider your next travel destination, pay attention to the slogans that catch your eye. They might just reveal what you’re truly seeking on your next adventure.

Analyzing the Impact of Tourism Slogans

When you think about traveling, what’s the first thing that pops into your mind? Is it a picture of a breathtaking beach, the hustle and bustle of a vibrant city, or is it perhaps a catchy phrase that makes you dream about distant lands? Yes, we’re talking about tourism slogans – those catchy lines that stick with you and ignite a desire to explore new places.

Tourism slogans play a crucial role in the travel industry. They’re not just a bunch of words thrown together; they’re a carefully crafted message that aims to convey the essence of a destination and what it stands for. Think of “Incredible India” or “It’s More Fun in the Philippines.” These slogans are powerful tools that destinations use to stand out in a crowded market and connect emotionally with potential visitors.

How Do Tourism Slogans Work?

At their core, tourism slogans tap into your emotions and desires. They create a picture in your mind of what your experience could be like at the destination. Whether it’s the promise of adventure, relaxation, discovery, or luxury, a good slogan makes you feel like you’re missing out on something extraordinary by not visiting.

The Power of Words

The impact of a well-chosen slogan cannot be understated. These slogans do more than just grab your attention; they play a significant role in shaping the perception of a destination. For example, “I Love New York” doesn’t just evoke a sense of admiration for the city; it invites you to become part of a widespread community of people who share this love.

The Marketing Genius Behind Tourism Slogans

From a marketing perspective, tourism slogans are invaluable. They provide a memorable hook that can be used across various advertising mediums, from billboards and TV commercials to social media campaigns. They offer a consistent message that helps build a strong, recognizable brand for the destination.

Let’s Talk Numbers

Here’s a glimpse into how effective tourism slogans can be:

Creating a Memorable Tourism Slogan

When it comes to standing out in the bustling tourism market, crafting a memorable tourism slogan is key. These catchy phrases not only capture the spirit of a destination but also leave a lasting impression that beckons travelers from around the globe. So, how do you create a slogan that sticks? It’s not about finding the most elaborate words but rather, connecting with potential visitors on an emotional level.

First off, know your audience . Understanding who you’re trying to attract is crucial. Are they thrill-seekers looking for adventure or are they more inclined towards serene landscapes and cultural enrichment? Tailoring your message to resonate with your target demographic is essential.

Next, focus on what makes your destination unique. It could be the pristine beaches, the rich history, or the vibrant nightlife. Highlighting these unique selling points can make your slogan stand out. Keep it short and sweet ; the best slogans are concise yet powerful, leaving a lasting impression without overwhelming the reader.

Emotional appeal plays a significant role. A great tourism slogan taps into the feelings and desires of the audience. Phrases that evoke a sense of adventure, relaxation, or wonder can be incredibly effective. They transport the reader to your destination, if only in their imagination, kindling the desire to turn that dream into reality.

Incorporating a play on words or a bit of humor can also make your slogan more memorable. But, it’s vital to strike the right balance so that it remains respectful and in good taste. Clever wordplay can make your slogan catchy, ensuring it stays in the minds of potential tourists long after they’ve encountered it.

As you brainstorm and refine your slogan, consider its versatility across various marketing platforms. From social media to print ads, a powerful slogan seamlessly integrates into all forms of promotional content, reinforcing your brand identity and the allure of your destination.

Crafting the perfect tourism slogan isn’t just about being catchy; it’s about capturing the soul of your destination and speaking directly to the heart of your audience. Remember, you’re not just selling a place; you’re selling an experience, a dream. By focusing on what makes your destination unique and appealing directly to the emotions of your potential visitors, you’ll create a slogan that’s not only memorable but also powerful in driving tourism. Keep it concise, make it impactful, and let your slogan be the beacon that draws travelers from around the world to your doorstep. With the right approach, your slogan will not only resonate with your audience but also stand the test of time across various marketing platforms.

Top tourism slogans and why they worked

Effective advertising knows how to stick. In addition to a brand name and logo, a slogan rounds out the trifecta of brand identity. Think of jingles that get stuck in your head about a sandwich when you’re trying to work (5 dollar footlong, anyone?). How about the number of times you’ve bought something shown to you while scrolling social media?

Well, it turns out the same rules apply to destination slogans. Ready to dive in?

The same strategy that created these catchy slogans:

  • Subway: Eat Fresh
  • Goldfish: The Snack That Smiles Back
  • Nike: Just Do It
  • Maybelline: Maybe She’s Born With It
  • McDonald’s: I’m Lovin’ It

Also created these:

  • Florida: Sunshine State
  • Virginia: Virginia Is For Lovers
  • Las Vegas: What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas
  • Norway: Powered by Nature
  • Argentina: Beats to Your Rhythm

The long story short is that these slogans work. Today, we’re diving into the why.

#1 — Make it Catchy

Every one of these slogans sticks in your mind after you read it. Maybe it connects to a different thought or makes you laugh. That wasn’t a happy accident but rather a strategic marketing strategy. Catchy slogans are easy to remember and hard to forget, leading people to think of your brand naturally.

#2 — Make it Short & Sweet

Did you notice that the most successful slogans are ones you can read on a billboard while driving down the interstate? No small print is needed because they get the point across in only a few words. No successful slogan will be so long that it requires a genuine effort to remember. Despite “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” being a touch on the longer side, it sticks well because that’s the mentality of the location. Tying together who you are in a short and sweet way will be the most effective method.

#3 — Connect to an Emotion

Effective marketing comes down to a few basic principles, no matter what you’re trying to sell. One of the most popular is connecting your advertisement or brand to an emotion. Since we’re talking about travel, think of ways you can advertise in a way that says ‘this destination is your happy place.’ Does that mean your ideal visitor is a beach bum and needs to think of sunshine and sandy beaches? Maybe they’re more of an adventure seeker? Who you’re trying to attract is who you should have in mind when considering what emotional strings to pull.

#4 — Use it Over and Over and Over and Over Again

The advertising golden rule is to say the same thing enough times that it sticks. Why not have more than one slogan? Because it’s confusing. Your audience no longer knows what you’re trying to portray when you change up the messaging. Create something strong and say it, write it, and display it until you’re blue in the face. That’s the key.

#5 — Be Human

Understanding your goal is to connect with human beings will make your slogan and destination as a whole that much more approachable. Slogans work because they connect with people, but the slogan’s effectiveness wears off as soon as the brain connects that you’re trying to be a sales pitch. Similar to admitting we, as humans, don’t know everything, allow your slogan to reach for the person and not just their wallet.

Nebraska’s New Tourism Slogan Is Hilariously Honest

Nebraska’s New Tourism Slogan Is Hilariously Honest

Nebraska’s new tourism campaign relies on self-deprecating humor to attract visitors.

Courtesy of Visit Nebraska

Just a few months after Vilnius, Lithuania, unveiled its cheeky new tourism slogan— “Vilnius: The G-Spot of Europe” —Nebraska has followed up with an even funnier tagline to draw tourism (and attention) to the state.

Instead of promoting itself as “Nebraska Nice” anymore, the Midwestern state announced its new slogan is “Honestly, It’s Not For Everyone” at the Nebraska Tourism Conference on Wednesday, October 17.

“It was important . . . to be true to who we are and honest about what we are not,” Deb Loseke, Nebraska Tourism Commission Chair, said in a statement . While the slogan is brutally honest, the resulting ad campaign attempts to use that self-deprecating humor to change the perception that Nebraska is a boring place where there’s nothing to do.

Toadstool Geologic Park is featured in one of Visit Nebraska’s new ads.

Toadstool Geologic Park is featured in one of Visit Nebraska’s new ads.

In one of the new ads, two people are seen hiking across the unusual rock formations in Toadstool Geologic Park in the northwestern part of the state along with the phrase “Famous for our flat, boring landscape.” Another ad (seen at the top of this article) features three groups of people “tanking” down a river. “In Nebraska, we believe that only boring people get bored,” it reads. “So we invent our own fun. Like when we realized that a livestock tank would float, and thought, ‘It’s a boat.’”

So far, it looks like the campaign is working. Within one day of the announcement, the Nebraska Tourism Commission says they’ve received an “overwhelming” number of requests for T-shirts with the slogan on it. They say the resulting media coverage has reached more than 384 million people already. But will people actually go to check it out in person? Maybe not everyone, but tanking certainly looks like a lot of fun.

Why Do We Care So Much About Our Tourism Slogans?

A nother day, another tourism slogan. In late June, the Department of Tourism unveiled a brand new battlecry for the country’s perpetual campaign to lure in more visitors to spend their money here. As always, instant marketing, branding, and tourism "professionals"—as well as casual commentators—all rose out of the woodwork that is the internet to have their say.

There are those who love the simplicity of "Love the Philippines"—a direct, no-nonsense expression of devotion for a country that has so much to offer. But there are the critics turned off by the seemingly blunt, desperate plea to solicit affection. A simple punctuation mark, some have argued, would’ve vastly improved the copy, and it hasn’t helped the cause of the DOT that certain images from the promotional video that was launched alongside the new slogan were apparently—gasp!—shot in countries that were certainly not here in the Philippines.

What Happened to the Titan Submersible Is Sad. But How Some People Reacted Is Revolting

Opinion: Magkano Ka Ba, Bakla? Examining Queer Pride and Corporate Profits

There were other issues attached to the new slogan: a supposedly inflated budget, questionable visuals used in the logo, and why there was a need to change the slogan in the first place from one that was (relatively) popular and worked quite well. From the perspective of a cultural spectator, it seemed about right. It wouldn’t be a tourism slogan launch without a little (or a lot of) controversy.

This begs the question: why exactly are many of us so invested each time the powers-that-be take it upon themselves to scrap the previous campaign, start fresh, and launch a brand-new tourism rallying cry? Why are these branding and advertising refreshes such a big deal?

There’s the obvious reason, of course, which is that most Filipinos feel directly impacted by the campaign by virtue of their being Filipino. A new slogan reflects not just on the government and people working in the tourism industry—hotel and restaurant staff, airlines and tour operators, resort staff and guides—but all of us with friends and loved ones abroad, and even ourselves making plans to discover more of our homeland. The slogan amplifies how we communicate our love and fondness for our country and so we naturally have things to say, whether for or against, each time there’s a slogan reboot.

But I suspect it’s something more. The DOT may claim otherwise, but a new tourism slogan and campaign is a tacit admission that the old one isn’t working, or, at the very least, that it needs an update. Tens of millions of pesos are poured onto multi-media, multi-year campaigns like this, so of course the government would like to ensure that it goes beyond mere awareness into tangible returns. And for a country like the Philippines—a perceived tourism powerhouse based on numerous international awards and citations, not to mention a general reputation as a place blessed with abundant natural resources and stunning geography—the question is why that doesn’t exactly translate into concrete numbers.

In ASEAN, Thailand is the runaway winner, recording nearly 40 million (39.8 million) tourist arrivals in 2019. Malaysia came in second with 20.1 million, followed by Vietnam with 18 million. Tiny Singapore managed 15.9 million, with Indonesia rounding out the Top 5 with 13.6 million.

The Philippines came in sixth with about half of Indonesia’s numbers: about 8.2 million tourists. Cambodia (6.7 million), Myanmar (4.3 million), Laos (3.4 million), and Brunei Darussalam (213,000) follow.

The pandemic, of course, upended global travel, but 2022 marked a vast improvement in tourism arrivals compared to the two previous years. Thailand still led with 11.2 million inbound tourists, Malaysia with about 10 million, Singapore with 6.3 million, Indonesia with 5.5 million, and the Philippines at two million.

One can’t help but wonder, then, that for all its breathtaking natural beauty—our pristine beaches, our mountain hideways, our colorful festivals, our mouthwatering cuisine, and our much-vaunted Filipino hospitality— why the Philippines can’t seem to punch above its weight in terms of getting more tourists to come.

Could it be that so much attention and emphasis are heaped on these tourism slogan changes that we forget that there are numerous other factors to consider if we want to increase tourist arrivals to our shores? Tens of millions of pesos are spent on generating ideas to get people to come; how much have we spent on improving the overall experience of our guests once they get here?

This isn’t a dig at the DOT and the other government agencies who we’re sure are working tirelessly to elevate the entire tourism industry. And people have every right to criticize and complain when public funds are used on a campaign that ends up not just being substandard but downright sloppy. But there are many other factors beyond slogans and marketing campaigns that contribute to tourism arrivals that we can work on and maybe we should start turning our attention on those, like further developing some of the country’s culturally important sights and attractions, enhancing tourism support infrastructure and accessibility, strengthening the country’s economy, and many others.

The way people are seemingly obsessed with tourism slogan changes, you’d think they actually believe they’re wholly and exclusively responsible for drawing visitors in. Just over the last 20 or so years, we’ve had no less than seven tourism slogans, almost all of which were cooked up by a new administration, no doubt eager to show off what it can do. We’re no tourism or marketing professional, but we’ve always believed that a message of simplicity and consistency would trump one of novelty any day.

Perhaps it’s time our tourism leaders got to work crafting a creative, coherent slogan—one that communicates how much we are all proud of where we are and what we have—sell the hell out of it to us and to the rest of the world, and work on all of the other things that would make us truly, finally love the Philippines the way she deserves to be loved.

10 Painfully Honest State Slogans Inspired by Nebraska’s ‘It’s Not for Everyone’ Campaign

Nebraska is getting REAL with their new tourism slogan. We couldn't help brainstorming a few other options...

honest tourism slogans

Nebraska  made national headlines  this week by announcing a new tourism campaign that takes a self-deprecating view of the state’s reputation.

The new slogan?

“Nebraska: Honestly, It’s Not For Everyone.â€

Yes, seriously.

State Tourism Director John Ricks  told Omaha.com  that since Nebraska is often ranked as the “least likely state†that tourists plan to visit, “the marketing campaign needed to be different.”

This news got us thinking … what would other states’ slogans be if they were going to get super real and self-deprecating? Taking a page from Nebraska’s book, we came up with 10 updated, painfully honest slogans for other states.

Tourism directors, feel free to grab these for your next campaign:

California:   Wouldn’t It Be Cool If You Could Afford to Live Here?

Iowa:  Thanks For Driving Through. Maybe Stop Next Time.

Oregon:  Dude, Do You Even Brew Your Own Kombucha?

Vermont:   Still Really Into Phish and Not Apologizing For It.

Tennessee:  We’re More Than Jack Daniel’s – We’ve Got George Dickel, Too.

New York:  Only a Very Small Part of Our State Smells Like Garbage All the Time.

Delaware:   Even We Couldn’t Find Our State on a Map.

Oklahoma:  We Gave You Garth Brooks. What More Do You Want From Us?

New Jersey:   Our State Flag Is Leopard Print.

Florida:   Please Don’t Judge Us By Your Weird Uncle Who Moved Here in the 70s.

Nebraska’s tourism board masters the art of the underwhelming slogan

Farmers are staring down a tough spot.

We live in overwhelming times. The news is fake, politics is a tawdry 24-hour reality show, brands act like our friends, and our friends act like brands.

Blessedly, the great state of Nebraska wants no part of this. In a new tourism slogan announced this week, the Cornhusker State wants visitors to know that, “Honestly, it’s not for everyone.”

The self-aware slogan will replace the state’s “Nebraska Nice” moniker, which was retired in 2015. The new message is intended to be honest about Nebraska’s selling points, as well as its shortcomings.

For the past four years, Nebraska has ranked last when it comes to states that travelers most want to visit, according to research from travel marketing research firm MMGY Global. As the chair of the tourism commission said in a statement , “We discovered that we can’t offer something to everyone — but to those that we can, this campaign speaks to their sense of adventure and discovering what we as Nebraskans are all about.”

So what is Nebraska about? Well, it’s famous for its “flat, boring landscape,” corn and wheat fields, as well as “a way of embracing the not-so-obvious bits of life.” And now, it seems, Nebraska can add self-deprecating humor to that list. It certainly stands out in a field of tourism slogans that are not known for their subtlety. Greece’s “ Greece All Time Classic ” reads like something devised for a search engine; Vilnius’ perplexing “ G-spot of Europe ” campaign certainly got attention, but more for its absurdity than cleverness; and Honduras’s “Everything is here” slightly beggars belief.

Indeed, Nebraska’s new slogan—which will roll out in out-of-state markets in 2019—recalls great, underwhelming missives of lore. Slogans that don’t come with the lofty and aspirational aims of iconic brands like Nike’s “Just do it” or Apple’s “Think Different,” but rather that promise to do no more or no less than what they can. The iconic American “Beef: It’s what for dinner” comes to mind, as does the famous British slogan “Does what is says on the tin,” which has over time become more famous than the brand of deck sealant it was originally created to promote.

These slogans would hardly garner Don Draper’s seal of approval, but in a world where we’re constantly being oversold, being undersold feels like a breath of fresh, Nebraskan air.

Ranking the best and worst of wellington’s tourism ads.

From ‘Absolutely Positively Wellington’ to ‘You would in Wellington’, the coolest little capital sure has seen plenty of slogans.

Wellington’s promotional agency, WellingtonNZ, has revealed its latest ad campaign to attract tourists to the capital city, centred around a new slogan: “ You would in Wellington ”.

Over the past three decades, Wellington has made by far the most concerted effort of any New Zealand city to promote itself to the domestic tourism market, accumulating a laundry list of taglines in the process. Some ads were legendary and became part of the city’s cultural lexicon. Others were forgettable or just plain weird. Here they are from worst to best.

11. The World’s Coolest Little Capital

In 2010, Lonely Planet, the travel guide company that pumps out unending lists of nice things about cities, referred to Wellington as “the coolest little capital in the world”. It was a throwaway line, but Wellington’s marketing boffins absolutely (positively) fell over themselves in excitement and started plastering the slogan everywhere they could, including this 2017 ad.

It all came crashing down in 2021 when expensive marketing consultant Brian Sweeney told WellingtonNZ the slogan was cringe ; cool people and places don’t call themselves cool, and promoting the city as “little” made it seem unimportant. However, it is, undeniably, a capital.

10. Today is a Good Day

“You can’t beat Wellington on a good day” is an inescapable saying that everyone in Wellington simultaneously loves and absolutely hates. In 2013, Wellington tourism finally embraced it with the “Today is a good day” campaign. The ads tugged at the heartstrings, but sometimes had strangely dark vibes. In my head canon, this depressed woman is distracting herself with a beer at Garage Project, this man is dying and his wife just wants to see him smile one last time, and this little girl is playing off her divorced parents against each other for treats and affection.

9. You Would in Wellington

Wellington’s newest ad campaign is angled on the many exotic things tourists would do in Wellington that they couldn’t do anywhere else, like drink a mocktail, go to an op shop, or do karaoke. It also highlights swimming in Oriental Bay and diving for crays, both strange choices for a winter campaign.

The real problem is the slogan. When said out loud, it confusingly sounds like “you wouldn’t Wellington”. And it immediately opens itself up to parody: You’ve never seen three leaking pipes on one street, or spent $330m of ratepayer money on a useless town hall…. but you would in Wellington.

8. The Wellington Effect

“The Wellington Effect” campaign from 2019 introduced the idea that visiting Wellington makes you age in reverse, in a terrifying Benjamin Button kind of way. Wellington’s reputation as a southern fountain of youth never really caught on.

7. Wellington Has Things

After years of building up its brand in the domestic market, 2014’s “Wellington has things” was an attempt to reach the big, scary Australian market. The city immediately got nervous and fell back on classic Kiwi self-deprecation, completely underselling itself in the process.

The four-minute video was fronted by The Voice host Darren McMullan, who mispronounces Te Papa and celebrates Wellington for having things like “roads”, “water” and “electric doors on public toilets”. It has genuinely funny moment and ends with McMullan being won over by the city, but the incessant self-mockery undercuts the message.

6. Spoil Yourself in Wellington

“Spoil yourself in Wellington” was extremely 2008-core, with cutesy indie music and a scruffy-but-handsome boy wearing a hoodie underneath a blazer. The ad pitched Wellington as an upmarket shopping destination where you can buy a pink dress in the Old Bank Arcade, look at jewellery and art, and walk past a theatre. At the end of your trip, that same a scruffy-but-handsome boy will give you some jewellery before walking away without explanation. It’s glamorous depiction of the city, though it possibly missed the mark by pitching itself as a luxury destination during a recession.

5. Do Wellington Your Way

Launched in 2018, “Do Wellington Your Way” felt like a step forward in the city’s brand, embracing its alternative appeal. It was positive, fun, and different. In the ad, a farmer becomes a drag queen, a real estate agent performs standup comedy, and a teacher joins some kind of a skateboard gang. The plot is a little confusing (are they touring performers, or just doing an open mic on a weekend trip?). It would work slightly better as a pitch for people to move to Wellington rather than visit for a weekend – but arguably that’s what WellingtonNZ should focus on anyway.

4. There’s No Place Like Wellington

This 2011 campaign was aimed at the Australian audience, so most New Zealanders might be unfamiliar, but it is delightful. The hills, oceans, and buildings of Wellington are depicted in a beautiful fabric diorama. There was no need to get clever with the slogan when targeting an audience that was largely unfamiliar with Wellington as a tourist destination. The voice-over is similarly straight to the point. It’s an unabashed sales pitch, but it’s direct, succinct, and hits all of Wellington’s best selling points in under a minute.

3. Wild Wellington

For a moment, Wellington was all about “wild”. The region’s mountain biking and walking trails were promoted with the tagline “find your wild”. WellingtonNZ’s corporate mission statement was to “ make the Wellington region wildly famous”. A series of short ads in 2021 promoted different ideas for “wild weekends” in Wellington. It was a nice change to focus on nature experiences, and it was  a great point of differentiation against the stale grey husks that are Auckland and Christchurch.

2. Have a Love Affair with Wellington

honest tourism slogans

The year was 2005, and Wellington was feeling frisky. “Have a love affair with Wellington” added a steamy side to the capital’s tourism pitch. The ad, which doesn’t seem to be available online, began with a man and a woman sitting at different tables in a cafe, making sexy eyes at one another. He helps her with a crossword, and they spend the day exploring the city together, before heading to a hotel to root. We see them guiltily removing their wedding rings, implying they are each cheating on their spouses. The plot twist is revealed in the final shot: the man has a photo of the woman in his wallet. They were married all along, and simply acting out an elaborate sexual fantasy with the entire city as their voyeur.

It was bold, risqué and instantly memorable. It directly led to an increase in weekend hotel bookings, mostly from the lucrative kink market.

1. Absolutely Positively Wellington

The biggest, the boldest, and still undeniably the best. The 1992 Absolutely Positively Wellington ad spot had everything: cheerleaders, acrobats, air guitars, horses, a businessman rollerblading with a giant cell phone, jugglers, a marching band, a brothel (?) and a guy missing the bus. It’s beautiful, chaotic energy, fun, and unafraid to be corny or kitschy.

Moscow: An Honest Review of this Amazing City

“ You’re going to Russia?!?! Why? ” I heard these words pretty much every time I announced my upcoming trip to the east.

This reaction is understandable. Most people in Europe and the United States have a Putin-provoked distaste of the Russian Federation, which is growing by the day. Politicians claim that Russia’s sole mission is to diminish and undermine western powers to strengthen its own. After all, the name Vladimir comes from two old Slavic words, which together mean “great ruler of the world.” Make of that what you will…

Even the non-political vision of Russia is unfavorable. Most think of a cold, grey, backward place with Soviet architecture or battle-hardened, weather-beaten people. However, arriving at the sleek Moscow Domodedovo airport, I was impressed. I had been right to rebut popular notions of an unwelcoming and stony place.

However, almost immediately after leaving the airport, the ground for my righteous vindication became shaky. Driving into the outskirts of Moscow, my mind drew comparisons to television images of North Korean suburbs. Miles of uniform houses and bleak tower blocks lined the roads.

At the Izmailovov Delta Hotel next to the famous market of the same name, things were not looking much better. Truly peculiar decorations and violently colored walls competed for one’s gaze in the hotel lobby. Luckily, the rooms themselves were perfectly comfortable, though not particularly noteworthy. I’d stay central next time.

After dropping bags, I ventured toward the Izmailovov market for a look at how the locals live. From a distance, the buildings that encase the market are vivid, intricate and quite something to behold. As it was late in the day, the market was empty. Shop shutters were closed and stalls were folded up. I got the same uneasy feeling I get when walking through Disney Land – as if this was what remained after the recent collapse of a utopian society.

While nearly all the vendors had packed up and gone home, a few stalls remained opened for business. All that was left was an abundance of satirical matryoshka dolls containing various countries’ political leaders in historical order.

A tattooed burly salesman came over to me as I withdrew François Mitterrand from the wooden bowels of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing.

“ Where are you from, friend? ” He asked.

Ignoring my response, he launched into a speech about his armed forces days and the political situation in Russia.

“ You really ought not to trust the government, ok? Putin is a dangerous man, you see. Someone’s always watching in this city. ”

The whiff of Glühwein that carried with each sentence made me doubt the erudition of his analysis. Then again… this is what we hear in the news. I was not sure what to believe. After thanking the man and hastily filling Charles de Gaulle with the rest of the presidents of the Fifth Republic, I made my way back to the hotel.

Emerging from the underground we rounded the corner and immediately found ourselves in Red Square. The sight demands you stop and stare.

The insurmountable walls of the Kremlin line the length of one side; halfway along lies Lenin’s tomb and opposite is the lavish exterior of the Gosudarstvennyi Universalnyi Magazin shopping center (or GUM, as it’s referred to, thank God). The architectural marvel of Saint Basil’s Cathedral stands at the south end, with the State History Museum at the other. Even though the foreboding structures radiate a rouge pastel hue into every corner of the square, there is a sense of openness. No-doubt there was a somewhat different atmosphere when thousands of Soviet soldiers goose-stepped through the square. Interestingly, the Russian army still marches like this today.

Walking around central Moscow, history oozes from every spire and pillar. Buildings seem to lean over as you walk past, as if peering down on whoever dares to enter these austere places. For every moment or event in Russian history, there is a dedicated museum.

The quality of each museum is notably high. In particular, the Armory inside the Kremlin holds astonishing collections of royal carriages from across the world and throughout the ages. The world-renowned Fabergé Eggs are displayed here too.

Having wandered around for so long during the day, we had no time to eat before attending the Ballet that evening. Sitting in the Bolshoi, the long day began to catch up with me.

It is now that I must make a confession: while attending a performance by one of the world’s greatest ballet companies, I fell asleep.

Thankfully, I woke up later in the second half and was treated to the final leaps and prances of Shostakovich’s The Bright Stream. As someone who is not a ballet aficionado, that was probably enough.

Feeling significantly perkier afterward, a late dinner was in order. Just behind the Bolshoi is VOGUE Café , a gastronomic outpost of the famous magazine. It claimed to serve an eclectic mix of Japanese, Italian and Russian dishes. Intrigued, we entered.

Adventurously, we accepted the offer of some Russian wine. Full bodied and berried, it was delicious. Our evident surprise led the waitress to explain that Russian food and drink has improved hugely over the last few years. As it turns out, since the United States and the European Union placed sanctions on Russia after their annexation of Crimea, food imports have been scarce. As a result, Russian producers have been forced to meet the demand and quality expected today. As a result, Siberian wines and cheeses now win awards around the globe.

When we left the restaurant, it was late. Only a day had passed, yet we had filled every minute with history, culture and food. The next three days followed a similar format and we continued to make our way down the list of museums and sights. A boat ride along the river is a must-do for alternative views of the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Afterwards, sit on the rooftop Strelka bar opposite the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and watch the 3-mile-long line of pilgrims move slowly forward.

On the third day, we were due to board an overnight train to Saint Petersburg, but there was still so much left to do. Truth be told, it was probably too much for another three days, let alone one.

Nonetheless, I was satisfied. Moscow had revealed itself to be a fascinating and impressive city. While the city infrastructure isn’t as up-to-date as most capitals, the needs of every modern traveler can be met. It certainly isn’t the cold and unfriendly place envisioned by most in the west. Moscow’s winning attribute is its omnipresent sense of untouched history. This is a feature that is so often lost amongst hordes of tourists in Europe’s capitals.

It goes to show: what we hear about places we haven’t been in the news or through general hearsay, we can formulate pretty strong prejudices in our mind. While the political realities may still be ugly, by visiting, you can learn to separate and appreciate the everyday, the culture and the history of a place. On one side of a great red wall in central Moscow, a tyrannical leader works. On the other side, wholly separated, lies a magnificent Red Square where an overwhelming sense of history reveals the essence of Moscow and of Russia. And it is truly remarkable.

Young people could be able to move more easily between the UK and Europe and stay longer to work, study and train under proposed plans by the European Union

Under the proposal, which has been put forward by the European Commission ,  new rules would be drawn up to allow for greater movement between the UK and EU countries for people aged between 18 and 30.

Formal negotiations have not yet begun, and a UK source told Sky News no formal proposal had been put forward by Brussels to begin negotiating on.

The proposal will be further discussed by the European Council, which represents all the nations, before negotiations start in earnest.

The plans proposed by the EU would allow young people to stay in Europe for periods of four years, with the same rules extended to EU citizens coming to Britain.

It would also mean EU students paying the same fees as British ones. Since Brexit, UK universities have charged much higher fees to European students.

Announcing the move, the European Commission said it wanted to take an "innovative" approach to tackling the barriers experienced by young people looking to travel from the EU to the UK and vice versa for longer periods.

Sir Keir Starmer said police should be involved in the case of suspended Tory MP Mark Menzies, who faces allegations he misused campaign funds.

The backbench MP for Flyde in Lancashire has lost the Conservative whip after The Times published claims he had used political donations to cover medical expenses and pay off "bad people" who had locked him in a flat and demanded thousands of pounds for his release.

Mr Menzies disputes the allegations, and the Conservative Party has said it is looking into the claims and takes them seriously.

The Labour leader told reporters during a visit to Teesside: "There are obviously a lot of unanswered questions in relation to these allegations. Not least why it seems the Conservative Party took so long to act and whether they've reported this to the police, who it seems to me should be involved in this."

He said there is a "degree of frustration" that two weeks away from the local elections "yet again we're talking about misbehaviour by Tory MPs".

Earlier, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps denied suggestions there was a problem within the Tory party, telling Sky News: "There are MPs from other parties that have experienced similar problems or misdemeanours and it is right that there are processes in place."

Senior Tory Ruth Davidson says she'll be "surprised" if MP Mark Menzies lasts the week, following allegations - which he denies - that he misused campaign funds.

On the latest episode of Sky's   Electoral Dysfunction  podcast, which you'll be able to listen to from 6am on Friday, Baroness Davidson says the claims against him are "utterly jaw dropping".

"It is so out with the bounds of what being a responsible, elected member is and how you treat your constituency association. It is staggering, like utterly staggering," she says.

"I would find it difficult to believe that an investigation can be held and he can be cleared in time to stand a general election.

"In fact, I would be surprised if he survives the week here and doesn't just resign."

Mr Menzies is alleged to have used thousands of pounds given by donors to fund medical expenses and to have made a late-night call to a party volunteer asking for help because he had been locked up by "bad people" demanding money for his release, according to The Times.

He has been suspended by the parliamentary party while it investigates the allegations.

The MP for Fylde in Lancashire, who was one of Rishi Sunak's trade envoys, disputes the allegations but the Conservative Party said it is taking them "seriously" and "will always investigate matters put to them".

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps told Sky News earlier: "There's a process in place. He has had the whip withdrawn.

"There's further information that the chief whip I understand became familiar with yesterday and actions being swiftly taken on the basis of that further information.

"I think it is important to stress that the MP in question here denies the allegations and so on basis of sort of fairness and proper justice, I think it’s important to mention that."

Nicola Sturgeon's husband and former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell has arrived back at home after being charged by police amid an investigation into the party's funding and finances.

He returned to the home he shares with Ms Sturgeon on the outskirts of Glasgow earlier this evening.

Police said he has been charged in connection with the embezzlement of funds from the party.

He was questioned by detectives after being taken into Police Scotland custody on Thursday at 9.13am.

He remained in police custody until he was charged just after 6.30pm.

An SNP spokesperson said: "While this development will come as a shock, the police investigation remains ongoing and it would, therefore, be inappropriate to make any comment."

Over a year ago, Rishi Sunak made five pledges for voters to judge him on.

The prime minister met his promise to halve inflation by the end of 2023.

But with the general election approaching, how is Mr Sunak doing on delivering his other promises?

You can see the progress for yourself below:

The European Commission wants to open up post-Brexit talks which could make it easier for young Britons to study, work and live in the EU.

It said it would ask EU Council member states permission to negotiate with the UK government on a youth mobility agreement.

It suggested Britain had shown interest in agreements with individual European nations, but said an EU-wide approach was preferable.

Downing Street, however, suggested bilateral schemes were in the UK's best interest.

Under the prospective deal proposed by the Commission, UK and EU citizens between the ages of 18 and 30 would be able to stay for up to four years in their destination country.

It would not amount to reinstating free movement, which the UK gave up when it left the EU.

European Commission vice president Maros Sefcovic said: "The United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union has hit young people in the EU and the UK who would like to study, work and live abroad particularly hard.

"Today, we take the first step towards an ambitious but realistic agreement between the EU and the UK that would fix this issue.

"Our aim is to rebuild human bridges between young Europeans on both sides of the Channel."

A No 10 spokeswoman said: "The UK does have at a bilateral level a number of such schemes in place and we do that where it's in the best interest of the UK.

"And we do it as long as it meets our requirement to balance bringing in skills to the UK and exchanging those skills, but at the same time making sure that it's in line with our objectives to also be promoting and fostering UK talents and skills.

"We have spoken about wanting to reduce legal migration and also about wanting to support UK talent and skills and that's why we have a system in place whereby we have a number of agreements with individual EU member states where that works in our interests and we have that rather than a Commission-wide agreement."

Labour, meanwhile, has said it has "no plans for a youth mobility scheme".

Conservative MP Mark Menzies has been suspended from the parliamentary party in light of allegations he abused local Tory party funds to pay off "bad people".

Mark Menzies strongly disputes the claims which also include accusations he used campaign funds to pay his personal medical bills.

On the Conservatives' investigation into the claims, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps told Sky News: "There's further information that the chief whip I understand became familiar with yesterday and actions being swiftly taken on the basis of that further information.

"I think it is important to stress that the MP in question here denies the allegations and so on basis of sort of fairness and proper justice, I think it's important to mention that."

The climate gloves are off in a tale as old as time. Holyrood vs Westminster: the Green edition.

The SNP and its former leader Nicola Sturgeon stood on the global stage and won plaudits for their bold ambitions to help the slowdown in environmental doom.

Ms Sturgeon basked in a standing ovation when she boasted that Scotland was the first country on the planet to declare a “climate emergency”. But was it all talk? Was it without real substance?

The reality is the Edinburgh government, which includes Green Party ministers, has failed to hit its own targets for years and has faced claims of over promising and under delivering.

At Holyrood on Thursday, ministers climbed down from their big plans of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 75% by the end of the decade while lashing out at cuts from Downing Street making it more difficult ( see post at 2.52pm ).

The reality is the fallout of Rishi Sunak’s backpedalling last year on the UK’s climate targets has impacted what Scotland can deliver within its constraints. Edinburgh was, in part, pinning plans on consequential cash from London.

But, is that the full story? Some would say the separate tartan targets were far from achievable.

Humza Yousaf told Sky News he is fully committed to net zero by 2045 which is still five years ahead of Westminster. It feels a political world away to say whether that date will also fall victim to tweaks and changes.

Nevertheless, it reveals the road to net zero continues to throw up surprises along the way.

People voting in local elections in England on 2 May will need to provide photo ID.

It is the second year the requirement has been in place - but in 2023,  14,000 people couldn't cast their ballot because they didn't take ID to the polling booth.

There are 22 different types of ID you can use - and if you don't have any of them, you can register for a Voter Authority Certificate.

'Go home': Overtourism sparks backlash in Spain

'Go home': Overtourism sparks backlash in Spain

Anti-tourism movements are multiplying in Spain, the world's second most visited country, prompting authorities to try and reconcile the interests of locals and the lucrative sector.

Rallying under the slogan "The Canaries have a limit", a collective of groups on the archipelago off northwest Africa are planning a slew of protests on Saturday.

The Canaries are known for volcanic landscapes and year-round sunshine and attracts millions of visitors from all over the world.

Groups there want authorities to halt work on two new hotels on Tenerife, the largest and most developed of the archipelago's seven islands.

They are also demanding that locals be given a greater say in the face of what they consider uncontrolled development which is harming the environment.

Several members of the collective "Canaries Sold Out" also began an "indefinite" hunger strike last week to put pressure of the authorities.

"Our islands are a treasure that must be defended," the collective said.

The Canaries received 16 million visitors last year, more than seven times its population of around 2.2 million people.

This is an unsustainable level given the archipelago's limited resources, Victor Martin, a spokesman for the collective told a recent press briefing, calling it a "suicidal growth model".

- 'Go home' -

Similar anti-tourism movements have sprung up elsewhere in Spain and are active on social media.

In the southern port of Malaga on the Costa del Sol, a centre of Spain's decades-old "soy y playa" or "sun and beach" tourism model, stickers with unfriendly slogans such as "This used to be my home" and "Go home" have appeared on the walls fn doors of tourist accommodations.

In Barcelona and the Balearic Islands, activists have put up fake signs at the entrances to some popular beaches warning in English of the risk of "falling rocks" or "dangerous jellyfish".

Locals complain a rise in listings of accommodation on short-term rental platforms such as Airbnb have worsened a housing shortage and caused rents to soar, especially in town centers.

The influx of tourists also adds to noise and environmental pollution and taxes resources such as water, they add.

In the northeastern region of Catalonia, which declared a drought emergency in February, anger is growing over the pressure exerted on depleted water reserves by hotels on the Costa Brava.

"There are tourist destinations that are at the limits of their capacity," said Jose Luis Zoreda, the vice president of tourism association Exceltur .

"It's a problem that appears occasionally in the high season and in certain parts of the country, but it's getting worse".

- Loudspeaker ban -

Before the Covid-19 pandemic brought the global travel industry to its knees in 2020, protest movements against overtourism had already emerged in Spain, especially in Barcelona.

Now that pandemic travel restrictions have been lifted, tourism is back with a vengeance -- Spain welcomed a record 85.1 million foreign visitors last year.

In response, several cities have taken measures to try to limit overcrowding.

The northern seaside city of San Sebastian last month limited the size of tourist groups in the centre to 25 people and banned the use of loudspeakers during guided tours.

The southern city of Seville is mulling charging non-residents a fee to enter its landmark Plaza de Espana while Barcelona had removed a bus route popular with tourists from Google Maps to try to make more room for locals.

Housing Minister Isabel Rodriguez said over the weekend that "action needs to be taken to limit the number of tourist flats" but stressed the government is "aware of the importance of the tourist sector", which accounts for 12.8 percent of Spain's Gross Domestic Product.

Should trump be allowed to run for office, 16-year restoration of silent 'napoleon' to screen at cannes.

After a colossal 16-year restoration effort, Abel Gance's seven-hour silent classic "Napoleon" will finally return to the big screen at the Cannes Film Festival in May, organizers said Thursday.

The project to restore the epic 1927 film began in 2008 when two film researchers discovered different versions of the film in Gance's archives at the Cinematheque Francaise in Paris.

Restoring the French director's original vision turned into a mammoth, multi-million-euro operation combining detective work, digital wizardry and extraordinary dedication.

The head of the restoration project, Georges Mourier, told AFP in 2021 that it had become "an act of madness".

It will finally see the light of day as part of the Cannes Classics section of the festival, which runs May 14-25 -- the first time Gance's cut has been shown in 97 years.

Only the first part, running 3 hours and 40 minutes, will be shown in Cannes. The full seven-hour extravaganza will be screened with a 250-piece orchestra in Paris in July, followed by screenings elsewhere.

The film has long had a near-mythical status among cinephiles, not least director Francis Ford Coppola who owns many of the rights through his company, American Zoetrope, and presented an earlier restored version to widespread acclaim in 1981.

The team worked through 100 km of delicate film

As it happens, Coppola is also making a comeback at Cannes, with his long-awaited "Megalopolis" competing for the Palme d'Or, 45 years after he won it for "Apocalypse Now".

The latest restoration effort was made fiendishly difficult because the original reels were scattered around the globe -- some lost, some damaged, others mixed up or respliced, leaving up to 22 versions of the film in existence.

Mourier's team worked through at least 100 kilometers (60 miles) of film, much of it on the verge of disintegrating and highly flammable.

The film's reputation stems from its many technical innovations, including rapid editing, hand-held -- and horse-mounted -- camera shots and a famous final sequence featuring three split screens requiring three projectors in the cinema.

In a statement, the Cannes festival said it was "proud to be the venue for the rebirth of 'Napoleon by Abel Gance', a monument of the 7th Art, almost 100 years after its creation."

'This is ridiculous': Trump satire artist jumps to escape hush money jury duty

New Yorkers herded into the courtroom where former President Trump seeks a jury of his peers appear to have one question on their mind: Is he orange?

That was the quality upon which two dismissed jurors remarked in interviews outside Manhattan criminal court Thursday, the third day of jury selection in Trump's hush money trial.

While one of the pair found Trump to be more yellow , Mark, an artist who frequently satirizes former President Donald Trump in his work, said the color palette was plain to see.

"He's sort of plopped in a chair," Mark said. "You can see the orange."

Mark was among those drawn into the courtroom who felt compelled to admit bias because of the subject of his work, he told MSNBC in an on-air interview.

"I was certain that even if intellectually I would be capable of being unbiased, because I satirized Mr. Trump often in my artwork, that this would come to light," Mark said.

Mark then did an imitation of Hollywood actress Vivian Leigh as Blanche Dubois in "Streetcar Named Desire " to poke a little fun at Trump's attorney, Todd Blanche.

"There would be no way," Mark said, "that Blanche, [who is] not going to rely 'on the kindness of strangers,' would allow me to be on the jury."

Mark did not elaborate on how he satirizes Trump artistically, but his work would hardly be the first to appear in New York City.

Ahead of the 2016 presidential election — when Trump is accused of falsifying business records to cover up hush money paid to adult film star Stormy Daniels — Manhattanites flocked to Union Square to view a statue of a full frontal Trump called "The Emperor Has No Balls."

When Judge Juan Merchan explained to Mark and his fellow New Yorkers what qualifications the attorneys sought in a potential juror, Mark realized it simply wasn't him, he said.

"I thought this is ridiculous, there is no way after my online presence where I satirized this man again and again that I would be fit," he said. "It would be a waste of their time and frankly, as a taxpayer, our money, for me to clog up the process that way."

Prospective juror dismissed for comparing Trump to Italy's disgraced former leader

A prospective juror was dismissed from Donald Trump's trial after comparing the former U.S. president to the late Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

New York Justice Juan Merchan dismissed the prospective juror, who was born and raised in Italy, who pointed out that media in his home country had promoted similarities between the two populist leaders. He told the court that he didn't believe he could be impartial toward Trump at his criminal trial, reported Politico .

Trump became the first former president to be tried on criminal charges with the start of jury selection Monday in his trial for allegedly falsifying business records to conceal a hush money payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels shortly before the 2016 election.

He has been indicted a total of four times on 91 felony counts, including federal charges for election subversion and mishandling classified documents, but the U.S. Supreme Court will soon hear arguments in his claim of broad immunity to prosecution as a former president.

Berlusconi, who died last year, was convicted of tax fraud in 2013, sentenced to four years in prison and banned from holding public office for two years.

Three years of that sentence were automatically pardoned under Italian law, but Berlusconi was barred from holding legislative office for six years and expelled from the Senate, and he was ultimately elected to the European Parliament in 2019 and then won another term in the Italian Senate in 2022.

How South Africa’s former leader Zuma turned on his allies and became a surprise election foe

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South Africa faces an unusual national election this year, its seventh vote since transitioning from white minority rule to a democracy 30 years ago. Polls and analysts warn that for the first time, the ruling African National Congress party that has comfortably held power since Nelson Mandela became the country’s first Black president in 1994 might receive less than 50% of votes.

One big reason is Jacob Zuma, the former president and ANC leader who stepped down in disgrace in 2018 amid a swirl of corruption allegations but has emerged in recent months with a new political party . It intends to be a major election player as the former president seeks revenge against former longtime allies.

Here is what you need to know about the 82-year-old Zuma’s return to the political ring and how it might play a significant election role.

WHO IS JACOB ZUMA?

Zuma has long been one of South Africa’s most recognizable politicians. He was a senior leader in the ANC during the liberation struggle against apartheid. A former ANC intelligence chief, he has repeatedly threatened to reveal some of the party’s secrets. While Zuma was not one of Mandela’s preferred choices to succeed him, Mandela trusted Zuma to play an influential role in ending deadly political violence that engulfed KwaZulu-Natal province before the historic 1994 elections. The province has remained a vocal base of support for Zuma ever since, and members of Zuma’s Zulu ethnic group make up its majority. Zuma became deputy leader of the ANC in 1997 and was appointed South Africa’s deputy president in 1999.

HOW DID HE BECOME PRESIDENT?

Zuma’s path to power included legal challenges. In 2006, he was found not guilty of raping the daughter of a comrade at Zuma’s home in Johannesburg. A year earlier, he was fired as South Africa’s deputy president after his financial advisor was convicted for corruption for soliciting bribes for Zuma during an infamous arms deal. Alleging a political witch hunt, Zuma launched an aggressive political campaign that saw him elected ANC president in 2007. His campaign appealed to widespread discontent with then-President Thabo Mbeki, who was often described as autocratic and aloof. The corruption charges against Zuma were later dropped, amid controversy, and he was elected South Africa’s president in 2009.

HOW DID HE LOSE POWER?

Zuma’s presidency was often under fire. His close friends and allies, the Gupta family, were accused of influencing appointments to key cabinet positions in exchange for lucrative business deals. The allegations of corruption in government and state-owned companies eventually led the ANC force Zuma to resign in 2018. A judicial commission of inquiry uncovered wide-ranging evidence, and Zuma in 2021 was convicted and sentenced to 15 months in jail for refusing to testify. Zuma remains aggrieved with the ANC and his successor, President Cyril Ramaphosa. But few South Africans expected the break to go so far.

HOW HAS HE REEMERGED?

Zuma shocked the country in December by denouncing the ANC and campaigning against a party that had been at the heart of his political career. His new political party, UMkhonto WeSizwe, was named after the ANC’s military wing, which was disbanded at the end of the struggle against white minority rule. The ANC has launched a legal case seeking to stop the new party from using a name and logo that are similar to those of the military wing. The charismatic Zuma continues to crisscross the country, delivering lively speeches, and an image of his face will represent the party on ballots.

WHAT ARE ZUMA’S ELECTION CHANCES?

The ANC already had been facing pressure from other opposition parties. But Zuma’s new party threatens to draw support from within the often divided ANC. South Africa’s electoral body has cleared him to run for a parliament seat, despite his past conviction. Polls suggest the new party may emerge as one of the country’s biggest opposition parties and could play a significant role if the weakening ANC must form coalitions to run the country. Addressing his supporters at a recent rally, Zuma declared that “I need to return so that I can fix things.”
