John Mayer Brings Paradise Valley to Sunrise, FL

Mayer brings his SOB Rock tour to FLA Live Arena Sunrise, FL April 2 nd 2022 Review, photos, video and audio by Joel Shover

John Mayer’s Sob Rock Tour paid a visit to South Florida with a stop at the FLA Live Arena on Saturday night April 2 nd 2022. The tour train is now making the turn onto the final stretch after completing a run of west coast dates that included many bust-out-deep-cuts including “Age of Worry”, “I’m on Fire”, “Clarity” “Walt Grace Submarine Test January 1967” “XO”, and the long awaited, “Assassin” that John graciously dusted off after twelve long years. What would John have in store for us loyal fans here in Florida? Perhaps we get a Dead tune tonight, I mean Dead & Company did cancel out Florida last tour and didn’t even include them for this upcoming summer tour.

It really wouldn’t be a complete night in Sunrise, FL without a little rain shower to start the evening. Fans made their way into the FLA Live Arena and were greeted by smiling friendly staff. Looking around I notice that there really weren’t any long lines as the arena had numerous merchandise booths set up along with a vast array of food and beverage refreshments. It’s safe to say that the staff at FLA Live Arena knows how to put on a show, and every one of them knew how lucky they were to be working tonight!

The Opening act for this portion of the Sob Rock tour is YEBBA, a singer and songwriter from West Memphis, Arkansas that became well know for her talented viral vocals on an episode of SNL with Chance the Rapper. Her bee-bop melody had the crowd warming up.  I tell you first hand I could feel her passion flow through her music and so did the whole arena as she received a standing ovation.

Who was that tall guy on bass that looked oh to familiar in a ball cap? Pino Palladino was doing some double duty on bass for Yebba playing hits like “Stand”, “Louie Bag”, “October Sky”, “Distance” and “How Many Years.”

It was now time for the Sob Rock train to come rolling in the packed arena. John Mayer and his band hit the stage rocking the new single “Last Train Home”. The tone for the evening was more soul-full than the previous shows of this tour that I’ve seen on the east coast, and by the sounds of the bass I’m starting to believe the rumors that Geddy Lee left the perfect soundcheck bass combo written on the walls backstage.  Palladino’s sounds were distinct in every note to the enjoyment of the crowd.

“Belief” was next with John on the black PRS Silver Sky and he showed the near sold-out crowd that he can JAM! Another hit from Sob Rock is “Wild Blue” that featured amazing visual lighting along with the guitar mastery of Mayer. You couldn’t help but wonder if Mark Knofler was in the house for that number.

Every concert goer’s favorite tune was rolled out next with “Who Says”. I’m still planning that trip to Japan. Mayer took us into a short jazzy blues filled “Moving On and Getting Over.” Next, “Waiting on The Day”, from Paradise Valley, was the near bust out that we would get here in South Florida. This was the second time John has played this song this tour. It shows that Mayer is really embracing the fans pleas to play the deep cuts we love so much off his albums.

“Helpless” featured Greg Phillinganes going back and forth with Mayer and then performing a little Keytar solo.  “Neon” solo acoustic followed by “Stop this Train” a fan favorite as well as “Free Fallin” had every cell phone light in the house on! It’s a great feeling to look around and know that you’re part of something that is so emotional special. Mayer wasn’t done pulling heart strings, I mean it’s what he does, it’s his job, so save your battery life and enjoy the show!  “Queen of California” was next and that had the whole crowd singing once again, did they ever really stop?

This took us into the closest Grateful Dead wawa sounds that we would get of the night with “I don’t trust myself with loving you” this featured the magic fingers of Isaiah Sharkey noodling back and forth with John Mayer. I overheard a fan saying “You know you’ve made it when John Mayer plays rhythm guitar for you!” The talent on this stage is unbelievable. The grieving ballad of “I Guess I Just Feel Like” had the crowd singing with anticipation of the jam portion of the song. This song just keeps evolving to parts unknown and were loving every minute of it.

My favorite off the new album was next and in another form. A slowed bluesy “Shot in The Dark”. John could take this song in any direction and it will win the hearts of every fan.  Prince’s cover “The Beautiful Ones” masterfully sung by David Ryan Harris took us into another setlist staple and sing along “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” as John had the FLA Live Arena sing a verse.

Mayer then informed the crowd that they were going to hear the next song no matter what and with some very laughable banter “Your Body is a Wonderland” came next. Almost every John Mayer fan you meet would tell you they love the lyrics “Keep Me Where the Light Is”. I mean who wants to be in the dark unless you’re a shot, right?

“Gravity” was next but even that couldn’t pull the South Florida fans from the Sob Rock High as they screamed for more. The band returned with “All I Want is to Be with You” they closed the show with John confirming he is ready to be a star with a song that featured a lot of videos of the crowd on the screens, as they were all now shown in a “New Light”

‘Just Like Those Early Days’: Where to Get Tickets to John Mayer’s ‘Solo Acoustic Tour’

By John Lonsdale

John Lonsdale

John Mayer is getting back to the basics for his upcoming Solo Tour 2023 . With tickets now on sale, the 19-date run of springtime concerts will kick off at New Jersey’s Prudential Center in March, with dates scheduled at New York City’s Madison Square Garden before wrapping up at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

Buy John Mayer Tickets at Vivid Seats

Shortly after the songwriter’s announcement, he followed it up with another update, writing on his Instagram that he was “blown away and moved by the response to this tour announcement. I guess the wait was worth it for all of us. This is going to be very special.”

Mayer later went on to share that “three of [his] favorite singer/songwriters around,” including JP Saxe, Joy Oladokun, and Alec Benjamin would join him on the upcoming run of solo shows. Though previously announced as an opening act, Lizzy McAlpine “won’t be able to make the run with us this time” because of a schedule conflict, Mayer noted in his post.

“LETS GOOOOOOOO,” Benjamin commented, with Oladokun writing “I can’t believe this is real hahaah. See ya soon!”

(He’ll also embark on the Final Tour with Dead and Company this summer.)

Though the upcoming concert dates don’t exclusively support Sob Rock , it seems likely Mayer will play through at least a couple of the songs from the album during his Solo tour sets, from “New Light” to acoustic gems like “I Guess I Just Feel Like.”

John Mayer’s Acoustic Solo Shows Mesmerize Hollywood

' data-srcset=

The Prodigious Singer-Songwriter Delivers Two Incredible Performances to South Florida – Review and Photos of Night One of the John Mayer Solo Concerts at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, FL

John Mayer , the virtuoso musician known for his impeccable guitar skills and soulful vocals, graced the stage of the  Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida for night one of the two solo acoustic concerts that will undoubtedly be etched in the memories of those fortunate enough to attend the shows. Taking a break from touring around the world with the Dead , the singer-songwriter delivered an intimate performance to the crowd, breaking out deep cuts from throughout his storied discography. The evening was nothing short of magical, showcasing Mayer’s musical prowess in its purest form.

john mayer tour florida

Opening up the show was the incredibly talented JP Saxe , the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter from Canada. After finding viral fame in 2019, JP now travels all over, playing his heartfelt songs to audiences across the country. Along with John Mayer himself, JP is also a multi-instrumentalist and the setlist consisted of him switching off between playing his acoustic guitar and the piano, all while effortlessly singing his passionate lyrics to the world. He finished off his time on stage with his viral hit “ If The World Was Ending ” and “ Anywhere “, departing from the spotlight as the audience ruminated his soulful lyrics and waited for the main event.

john mayer tour florida

Finally, as the lights dimmed, the long wait was over. From the moment John Mayer walked onto the stage, the audience was captivated by his presence. Dressed casually in jeans and a t-shirt, he exuded an effortless coolness that endeared him to the crowd. Flanked by a giant LED screen displaying the action to the audience in the back, but without any extravagant production or flashy theatrics, it was clear that this concert was all about the music and a throw-back to his younger days, playing intimate shows by himself in a small bar. Mayer kicked off the night with “ Slow Dancing in a Burning Room “, setting the tone for an emotionally charged and intimate performance. His raspy, bluesy voice filled the venue, and his fingers danced effortlessly across the strings of his acoustic guitar. The stripped-down arrangements allowed his exceptional guitar skills to take center stage, and it was a treat to watch him work his magic up close.

john mayer tour florida

Throughout the evening, Mayer took the audience on a journey through his extensive catalog, revisiting both his chart-topping hits, unique covers and deep cuts. Classics like “ Shot in the Dark “, “ No Such Thing “, and “ Last Train Home ” were met with thunderous applause and sing-alongs, while lesser-known tracks like “ Queen of California ” showcased Mayer’s versatility as a songwriter and musician. One of the highlights of the night was Mayer’s ability to connect with the audience on a personal level. He spoke with the crowd in between songs, shared anecdotes and stories behind the tracks, and made the performance feel like an intimate conversation with an old friend. This vulnerability and authenticity endeared him even more to his fans, who hung on to his every word.

john mayer tour florida

Mayer’s guitar solos were nothing short of mesmerizing. Whether he was plucking the strings with delicate precision or unleashing a torrent of fiery notes, his guitar work was a testament to his status as one of the finest guitarists of our time. His fingerstyle technique and mastery of the instrument left the audience in awe. The concert’s acoustic format allowed Mayer to showcase his exceptional songwriting skills, and he did so with grace and eloquence. His lyrics, often introspective and contemplative, resonated deeply with the audience, eliciting both laughter and tears. Toward the end of the show, we were treated to his most well known hit, “ Your Body is a Wonderland “, and John even broke out the double-neck acoustic guitar for “If I Ever Get Around to Living” and “Edge of Desire”. As the night drew to a close, the crowd erupted into a standing ovation, demanding an encore. Mayer obliged with an emotional rendition of “ Free Fallin’ ” by Tom Petty , a fitting tribute to one of his musical heroes., and the evening ended with a sense of camaraderie and shared appreciation for the artistry of John Mayer .

john mayer tour florida

Overall, John Mayer’s solo acoustic concerts at Seminole Hard Rock Live were a masterclass in musicianship and an unforgettable night of music. Mayer’s raw talent, genuine connection with the audience, and timeless songwriting left a lasting impression. It was a night where the music spoke for itself, and it spoke volumes. If you ever have the opportunity to witness John Mayer during his acoustic solo tour, do not miss it; it’s an experience that will resonate with you long after the final note fades into the night.

John Mayer at Amalie Arena in Tampa, FL

john mayer tour florida

With no band and no setlist, John Mayer threw out all of the rules to treat fans to a unique experience for his Solo Tour .

Sharing the stage only with the techs who helped switch out his various guitars, John Mayer embarked on his first-ever Solo Tour earlier this year. Following a successful Spring leg, new dates were added for Fall which included a stop at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.

After opening for Mayer during the first Solo tour shows in spring, Canadian singer JP Saxe returned with his own solo act. Saxe’s newest album A Gray Area was released in September of 2023 and features the single “I Don’t Miss You,” co-written by Mayer himself. The pair previously collaborated on a live performance of Saxe’s song “Here’s Hopin” in 2021. Graphics on the screen along the back of the stage displayed Saxe’s name along with an animated loop of dripping paint, resembling the artwork of A Gray Area , as the singer took a seat at a similarly decorated piano. Following acoustic performances of the single plus a few more tracks from the new album, including a partially acapella rendition of “Who You Thought I’d Be,” Saxe closed his 30-minute set with one of his most popular releases to date, “If the World Was Ending.”

Anticipation within the crowd grew as the set changeover began. Fans who had seats in the front rows of the floor were giddy with excitement for what the rest of the evening would hold, sharing stories with their neighbors about previous experiences at John Mayer shows and getting their handmade signs locked and loaded. Once the stage was set with only a piano stage right, a microphone dead center, and a chair stage left, the lights dimmed and Mayer’s silhouette appeared waving to the crowd before taking a seat with his guitar.

The opening number “Heartbreak Warfare,” was played in relative darkness before the lights fully illuminated the stage for “Love on the Weekend.” Early on in the set, it was clear that this show would not be traditional. The fans with their signs had clearly been aware and prepared because a main staple of the Solo Tour is crowd interaction. Without a definitive setlist, Mayer seemingly decided which songs to play on the spot, based on either his own intuition or crowd requests.

After spending some time center stage, Mayer moved to the piano to perform two songs, “You’re Gonna Live Forever in Me” and “Changing.” During the latter, Mayer picked up a guitar, playing both it and the piano simultaneously, for an impressive instrumental break. Another behind-the-scenes look, this time from the Continuum recording sessions, segued from the piano section as Mayer left the bench. Fans in the crowd cheered wildly as they were treated to “Stop This Train,” “Daughters,” and “Your Body Is a Wonderland.”

With Mayer’s current format, even his most popular songs are not guaranteed; one of the singer’s most beloved tracks “Gravity” was noticeably absent. There is a give and take with this, however – by missing out on some of these staples, fans are given the rare opportunity to experience more underrepresented tracks. Sandwiched between two of the aforementioned hits was “Hummingbird,” a song Mayer had not played live since 2008. Mayer ended his set by switching out his acoustic guitar with a double-neck acoustic for the last three songs.

One of the few tracks that has had a consistent spot across the Solo shows has been “Edge of Desire.” The bright, strobing lights that accompanied the song felt like a finale in comparison with the solid-colored lights that remained mostly constant throughout the rest of the set. As they faded out, Mayer briefly left the stage before returning for a short encore of two songs. After “Born and Raised,” fans swayed and sang along to the cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’” to end the night.

John Mayer’s Solo Tour continues its North American run this Fall before heading to Europe early next year.

Last night, Thursday, September 29, John Mayer landed on a solo debut of the Grateful Dead’s “Terrapin Station” start, known as “Lady With a Fan.” The first time performance took place at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Fla., taking the eighth slot during the initial acoustic frame, which also featured a cover of the Bruce Springsteen original “Im On Fire.”

After hitting his stride on Room for Squares cut “Neon,” the gentle, recognizable acoustic chords of “Lady With a Fan” enveloped the Sunshine State venue as the lone musician worked through the brief instrumentals that unfold into the first verse: “Let my inspiration flow/ In token lines suggesting rhythm/ That will not forsake me/ ‘Til my tale is told and done.”

The stripped-down cover was a far cry from the jammed-out iterations played by the musician during his Dead & Company tenure. Rather than supply the number with a pulsating backbeat, electric solos and fast keys, Mayer remained faithful to the intent of his solo acoustic tour, allowing his most powerful tool to excel in the trajectory of the Robert Hunter-penned story: his voice.

Rather than transition into the whole “Terrapin Station Suite,” Mayer focused on the first part of the 1977 epic, playing with the carefully crafted lyrics while accentuating missing instrumentals with playful harmonies crooned in a mimicry fashion. Seamlessly, the musician transitioned the Dead cover into “The Age of Worry” off his 2012 album Born and Raised . Scroll down to watch last night’s “Lady With a Fan” cover.

Recent tour reviews

It was his birthday and his band played Happy Birthday To You for him after the first song, Belief!

After the intermission, he covered Tougher Than The Rest by Bruce Springsteen, saying that it was one of his favourite songs of all time.

It was a good setlist: he played some songs that he doesn't usually play, like Waitin' On The Day, Born And Raised or In Your Atmosphere.

Before playing Changing, he said that to finish the song he thought about Irish people in a pub singing it together, and that every time he sings it he thinks about Ireland.

He and all the band were really great.

WHAT A MAGICAL EVENING OF PURE MUSIC & ART!

The Viejas Arena at the SDSU campus is simply a fabuous venue- and on a perfect cool night in San Diego, the sold out show was an artistic masterpiece- the setlists were spot on. The artsy colorful 3D Backdrop, that I believe Mayer himself was a key designer in its creation, blended beautifully with the video montages displayed above it.

Speaking of the video special effects- subtle, colorful, real-time gems, shadow effects in a stacatto pattern of the guitar neck, I've never seen anything like it in 40 years of concert outings. The crowd was captivated- a long 30 minute intermission appeared relatively early in the show.

I've been going to John Mayer shows since 2002 and though I am obviously a biased super-fan, I can honestly state that this production is-- far and away-- much more amazing than what I saw at the Forum just two years ago.

JM is continuously expanding horizons, getting more creative-- and has the crowd in stitches laughing when he chats up his latest insights & specific San Diego references... I just wish I had the whole show on video so I could watch it again and catch every little thing I missed!

My Husband and I were blown away at the complete show. John is a master of master's at playing the guitar. I still can't get over how amazing it was to watch him get into playing and what we heard. It made so much of a great difference seeing him in person play. His band is extremely talented with the gifts they brought to the stage too. This year we've seen 4 concerts so far and John Mayer was the best! I hope he continues to perform for many years because we'll see him every time if he comes to Phoenix or Tucson (where we live). John spoke to the crowd and made us laugh during the show. They even dropped confetti on the main floor during their encore - it was so cool!! No other band this year we saw live did as much for the crowd entertainment as John Mayer.

What time is John Mayer on stage at London's O2 Arena?

John Mayer is set to bring his Solo Acoustic tour to London ’s O2 Arena this week to give his audience a cosier take on some of his heartfelt romantic numbers.

The US singer-songwriter is stopping off at the Greenwich venue for two nights, on Monday and Tuesday, as part of the European leg of his world tour.

Later this week, he will head to the Netherlands for two nights in Amsterdam and then a one-night stop in Paris, before it’s back to our isles for Glasgow on March 27 and Dublin on March 29.

Here’s what happened last time he played the O2 Arena.

And below is all you need to know ahead of Mayer’s shows.

Who is supporting John Mayer?

Madison Cunningham, a folk singer with three albums under her belt. has been given the nod for the European dates. She is very much in the spirit of Americana and will provide a perfect warm-up for Mayer’s soulful numbers.

When will John Mayer be on stage?

Doors open at 6.30pm and our educated guess is that Cunningham will be on stage by around 7.30pm, giving enough time for Mayer’s team to set up.

By recent precedent, Mayer will be on stage at around 9pm and has been winding up with Free Fallin’ before 11pm.

But don’t leave it to chance; in a recent gig in Copenhagen, he caught a few out by turning up at 8.40pm. Maybe his parking ticket was about to expire.

Londoners , you’ll be absolutely fine to get home as the Jubilee line is running a good service all the way to Stanmore until 12.20pm. However, it’s always best to check the latest travel updates ahead of your journey.

Can I still get tickets?

Yes. Tickets are still on sale from £50 for both nights, available from axs.com .

What might Mayer’s setlist be?

Anything goes and don’t let our guide be the gospel on this. But, for an indication, he played the following numbers at his recent gig in Stockholm .

Slow Dancing in a Burning Room

Shot in the Dark

Queen of California

Shouldn’t Matter but It Does

No Such Thing

Waitin’ on the Day

In Your Atmosphere

You’re Gonna Live Forever in Me

Stop This Train

The Age of Worry

Your Body Is a Wonderland

In the Blood
