The Airports of Paris

A Guide to the Airports in Paris

paris airport tourist information

Alan Nee/Moment/Getty Images

If you're traveling from North or South America, Asia, or Australia, chances are that you will fly into Charles de Gaulle Airport , the largest in the greater Paris area and a major European hub for long-haul carriers. Orly International Airport also handles some major international flights, including for Air France. But both are also major hubs for domestic and inter-Europe flights, too. There's also the much smaller Beauvais International Airport (BVA), which services low-cost airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air.

Paris-Charles de Gaulle International Airport (CDG)

  • Location: Roissy-en-France
  • Best for: Long-haul international flights
  • Avoid if: You dislike crowds
  • Distance to the 1st Arrondissement: A 30-minute taxi will cost about $55. You can take the RER train to the metro, which will take about an hour and cost about $15. The RoissyBus will take you directly to the Opera district (Central Paris)—it's an average 60-minute drive and costs about $15.

Alongside London Heathrow and Germany's Frankfurt Airport , Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport is one of Europe's biggest hubs for air travel and France's most-sprawling by a long shot. In 2019, 76.2 million travelers flew into and out of this bustling airport. There are a total of three massive terminals spread across more than a mile, connected by free shuttle buses and automated trains.

Many of the world's major airlines fly into CDG, which serves as the main hub for French national carrier Air France. International carriers such as KLM, Lufthansa, Delta, American Airlines, British Airways, Air China, Air India, Singapore Airlines, and dozens of others offer daily international and domestic service to and from this airport. In addition, low-cost airlines such as Iberia Express offer convenient and budget-friendly flights to and from European destinations.

While there are only three terminals at CDG, these are massive, incredibly busy places that can be overwhelming for first-time visitors. From fast food to high gastronomy and from budget shopping to designer boutiques, there's something to entertain everyone at this massive complex. Other major services and amenities at CDG include free Wi-Fi, phone-charging stations, beauty and wellness services, and prayer rooms.

Paris Orly Airport (ORY)

  • Location: Orly
  • Best for: Inter-Europe travelers
  • Avoid if: You're flying long-haul international, except to/from New York
  • Distance to the 1st Arrondissement: A 25-minute taxi will cost about $45. You can take the RER train to the metro, which will take about an hour and cost about $15. There's also a bus, which takes about 30 minutes and costs roughly $10.

Located just ten miles south of Paris and easily accessible by commuter train, Orly International Airport is, for many passengers, a less-stressful option than CDG. It processes millions of travelers a year (31.9 million in 2019) but somehow feels less frantic on an average day than CDG does. Plus, it takes significantly less time to get to and from central Paris from Orly, making it an attractive option for those who find ground transportation to be tricky and overwhelming.

Orly is a secondary hub for Air France, which operates many of its domestic and European flights from this airport, as well as long-haul international flights from New York City's JFK Airport. A number of other airlines offer flights to and from other European destinations, include budget carriers Vueling and easyJet.

There are four terminals: 1, 2, 3, 4, that are all connected. While Orly's shopping and restaurant offerings are less substantial than those found at CDG, it's still considerable. Whether you want a quick sandwich or a formal sit-down meal complete with wine pairings, the airport's numerous bars, restaurants, and eateries offer a wide variety of options.

Paris Beauvais–Tillé Airport (BVA)

  • Location: Tillé
  • Best for: Budget flights
  • Avoid if: You want to get into the heart of Paris quickly
  • Distance to the 1st Arrondissement: A taxi will take anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes and can cost upwards of $200. Instead, take the shuttle bus, which takes about 75 minutes to get to Paris and costs about $35.

Located around 50 miles northwest of Paris in the town of Tillé, Beauvais is the smallest of Paris' regional airports and the farthest away from the city center. Many travelers flying from overseas never encounter it at all, but it's a popular choice for budget domestic and European flights on low-cost airlines. Nevertheless, it's still a relatively busy airport with an average of four million passengers per year.

Paris-Beauvais Airport offers flights from a total of seven European, primarily low-fare and no-frills airlines : Ryanair, Air Moldova, Blue Air, Laudamotion, Sky Up, Volotea, and Wizz Air.

The facilities at this two-terminal airport are far less extensive than those at CDG and ORY, but if you need to grab a bite, catch up on global news, shop for gifts, or find a good book for your flight, there's plenty to keep you busy. Both terminals at Beauvais include duty-free shops, international newsstands, restaurants, and vending machines. There's also free Wi-Fi.

The complete guide to Paris airports

paris airport tourist information

Paris is a bustling capital known for its culture and many landmarks, and it’s served by three airports: Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), Paris-Orly Airport (ORY), and Paris-Beauvais Airport (BVA). The French capital offers travelers several options for arriving into and getting around France and Europe. In this guide, I’ll cover all three airports in Paris to help you decide which is best for planning your trip and flights and what you need to know once you get there.

Iconic bell towers and building rooftops set against a yellow orange sunset sky.

In this post

Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport

Paris-orly airport (ory), paris beauvais-tille airport (bva), orly vs. charles de gaulle airport: differences between ory and cdg, best paris airport to fly into.

A young child in orange sweater runs on an airport lounge with large windows.

The busiest airport in France, third in Europe and among the top ten in the world, Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport in Paris is a major gateway for travelers arriving from all parts of the world.

CDG is like its own mini-city, home to an array of services and amenities for travelers arriving or who have connecting flights in Paris. As Air France’s main hub, CDG caters to a wide range of major international airlines, such as American Airlines, Delta, KLM, United Airlines and more, plus low-cost local and international carriers like easyJet and Transavia.

Getting to Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG)

An hour-long RER train and métro journey to central Paris, or a 30- to 45-minute taxi ride (if there’s no traffic), Charles de Gaulle Airport is the main Paris airport, with three expansive terminals connected by trains and shuttles.

The RER B line runs every 10 to 15 minutes on weekdays from the airport to métro stations throughout the city (it’s about 25 minutes to Gare du Nord, 28 minutes to Châtelet-Les-Halles and 35 minutes to Denfert-Rochereau, and the cost is €11.80, or about $13, one-way).

Taxis are often a convenient choice to get to the airport , since they’re readily available in multiple locations throughout the airport and offer fixed rates between CDG and the Right Bank (€55 or $60) and Left Bank (€62, or $68). I tend to use the car-share service Bolt, which is often more affordable than Uber.

Shopping and dining at Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG)

A happy mother and daughter share a dessert at a restaurant.

Don’t worry if you forgot to pick up a gift for a friend back home – the shopping at CDG is as luxurious as if you were strolling the Rue Saint-Honoré. Get ready for spectacular window shopping at luxury shops, plus more boutique offerings like L’Artisan Parfumeur.

In addition to takeaway chains like Starbucks, Naked, YO! sushi and Eric Kayser Artisan Boulanger, travelers can take a seat at restaurants like Japanese-style Kirei in Terminal 1 or 70-seat champagne bar and eatery I Love Paris by Guy Martin, the Michelin-starred chef behind fine-dining spot Le Grand Véfour in Paris's Palais-Royal.

Things to do at Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG)

Since I rarely have lounge access (and the lounges are often packed), I’ll usually browse duty-free for last-minute gifts for family members before sitting at the counter for seafood and champagne at Caviar House & Prunier Seafood Bar.

Throughout the airport, you’ll also find free arcade gaming areas with ‘80s throwbacks like Pac-Man and Space Invaders, plus the latest PS5 game consoles and even a museum space in Departure Hall M in Terminal 2E, featuring two annual exhibitions with works by the likes of Joan Miró and Marc Chagall.

Other amenities at Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG)

If you have a layover in Paris and want to stay the night, you’ll find more than a dozen hotels within a free shuttle ride of all three terminals – plus YotelAir inside Terminal 2E. You’ll also have access to SkyTeam, Star Alliance and Oneworld lounges in terminals 1 and 2.

A female traveller checking in for her flight at the airport.

Closer to the city center, Paris-Orly Airport (ORY) is home to a range of large international carriers, low-cost European and domestic airlines. While most travelers from the US fly into CDG, you can fly direct to ORY on budget carrier French Bee to Miami (MIA), Newark (EWR) or San Francisco (SFO), or to Newark on the all-business La Compagnie.

Getting to Paris-Orly Airport (ORY)

The closest airport to Paris, Orly (ORY) is less than 30 minutes from the city on a good day (meaning no traffic), and taxis cost significantly less than from CDG (around €35, or $38, to the Left Bank). You can also take the RER to the métro or the 30-minute direct Orlybus shuttle to Denfert-Rochereau in the city center. Just keep in mind that these buses get busy, so if you’re carrying heavy or multiple pieces of luggage, you may want to opt for a taxi instead.

All four of Orly’s terminals are connected, so if traffic is building up out front, I’ll hop out of my taxi as soon as I arrive at the airport and walk to my terminal instead.

Shopping and dining at Paris-Orly Airport (ORY)

A man in business attire with a small cup of coffee on a table.

While much smaller and more manageable than CDG, Orly still offers travelers similar services, including arrivals level restaurants, cafés and pâtisseries like Paul and Ladurée Paris. Once you pass through security, you’ll come across everything from gourmet burger joint Vivanda, created by Michelin-starred chef Akrame Benallal, to sleek counter Le Bar, a great spot for pre-flight coffee, cocktails or wine.

Most travelers coming from the US probably haven't heard of Beauvais , the smallest of the city’s three airports, since it’s outside Paris and caters to low-cost domestic and European flights.

But don’t let its small size fool you – Paris-Beauvais Airport (BVA) now ranks tenth-busiest in France , with airlines flying to nearly 80 destinations in 29 countries (mostly in Europe, Morocco and Amman, Jordan). A hub for low-cost carriers like Ryanair, Wizzair, easyJet, Laudamotion, HiSky and Volotea – with flights everywhere from Porto (OPO) and Barcelona (BCN) to Sofia (SOF) in Bulgaria and Zaragoza (ZAZ) in Spain.

Getting to Paris-Beauvais Airport (BVA)

The two-terminal airport sits about 50 miles northwest of the capital, in the town of Tillé. A 75-minute non-stop shuttle ride from Porte Maillot in Paris (near RER line C and métro line 1) is the easiest and most cost-effective way to reach the airport, unless you have a car rental and plan to drive in France .

From the nearby regional TER Beauvais train station, which connects to Paris’s Gare du Nord (the trip is 75 minutes, not including the bus or taxi from the Beauvais station to the airport), you can connect to other cities in France, the closest being Creil, a town north of Paris.

The trip to the airport via taxi from Paris takes between an hour and an hour and a half, but the fare is much steeper (from €185, or $202, one-way during the day). Since this airport services secondary cities and some European capitals, if you need to connect for a flight to ORY or CDG, expect taxi rates to be just as high (fares are around €230, or $250, to Orly, to give you an idea).

Shopping and dining at Paris-Beauvais Airport (BVA)

Beautiful woman buying cosmetics and looking happy

In both of the departures lounges, you can shop duty-free alcohol, electronics, gastronomy and sweets, perfume and cosmetics, and more at Aelia. In the Terminal 2 departure lounge, you’ll also find a Relay, which offers travel accessories, drinks and snacks, magazines and books, and souvenirs. Both terminals also feature small cafes and spots with takeaway sandwiches and salads, but the only sit-down restaurant in Brasserie Le Faubourg in the public area of Terminal 2.

An airplane, landing gear extended, approaches a runway as the sun sets majestically, with vibrant runway markers guiding its descent in the foreground.

While Orly is easier to navigate (and often less crowded) than the maze-like Charles de Gaulle, and it’s a quicker ride into central Paris, you’ll find much more in terms of shopping and dining at CDG. Usually less chaotic (unless it’s the height of the summer holidays), Orly is the closest airport to Paris and often a better choice if you’re debating between a similar flight leaving from CDG or have an early-morning journey.

The downside of ORY: the airport doesn’t have a hotel within the terminals or luggage storage lockers like CDG (which are located at Terminal 2 Gare TGV-RER, across from the Sheraton hotel ). Both, however, do have health care services and international vaccination centers, in case you need an appointment for an impromptu trip. You'll also find plenty of comfortable places to post up while charging electronic devices or waiting for your flight to board.

If you’re browsing the boutiques at either airport, you can shop duty-free prices (you’ll just need to show your boarding pass) and even score discounts and special offers throughout the year. If you’ve already purchased items in France and are leaving the EU, don’t forget to claim the VAT back at the airport by presenting your documents at the tax refund desk or kiosks (détaxe) in the departures terminal before passing through security.

The most convenient airport to fly into from the US is CDG, since it offers the most direct and connecting flight options. Orly's direct flights to the US are only to a few cities on low-cost carrier French Bee, or all-business La Compagnie, which only offers a non-stop service to Newark, NJ. Most flights from the US and major international cities outside Europe fly into Charles de Gaulle, while Orly offers plenty of daily domestic and European flights.

How was this guide created

Over the past decade working and living in France as a travel journalist, I’ve flown in and out of Paris’s airports more times than I can count, experiencing everything from five-star service on business-class flights to shorter, budget-friendly journeys on low-cost carriers that are often cheaper than local trains. I've learned that it never hurts to arrive early, pay in advance for luggage and book fast-track services if I'm not flying Sky Priority.

If you are flying in more international destinations, then more of KAYAK’s expert Airport guide is here to guide you.

Paris Airports 101: Everything You Need to Know

Which airport: Charles de Gaulle or Orly? How to get into Paris: metro or Uber? A longtime Paris resident helps you navigate the ins and outs.

When my best friend had her second child and decided to call her Orli, the first thing that came to mind was: Why would she name her little girl after France’s second-largest airport? Of course, she—like many Americans—didn’t know such an airport existed so it made no difference to her. (Plus, it does have a nice ring to it.)

But here’s the thing: Everyone should know about Orly (ORY). Depending on where you’re coming from (or going to), reaching this Parisian airport is often easier and cheaper than Roissy–Charles de Gaulle (CDG), France’s main hub and the second-biggest airport in all of Europe. And what about CDG’s and ORY’s far-flung stepsister Beauvais (which rhymes with mauvais , French for “bad” —which is perhaps apropos because it’s wayyyyyy out there)? Fear not on figuring it all out, wandering Francophiles, pas de problème! Here’s a primer on Paris’s three airports to make your planning simple.

Roissy–Charles de Gaulle (CDG)

Located about 20 miles northeast of Paris, Roissy–Charles de Gaulle serves 325 cities worldwide and is often the go-to choice for travelers because of the number of nonstop flights that arrive here. CDG is great if you’re staying on the Right Bank. However, if you’re staying all the way in, say, the 13th arrondissement or over to the west, near the Eiffel Tower, CDG can take ages to reach by train or cost you more to go by taxi or Uber. If that’s the case, you should consider Orly, which is to the south of the city.

Getting to the city by public transportation from CDG

To reach the city from Roissy–Charles de Gaulle Airport, your best bet is the RER B , a commuter train that makes stops at a few metro stations in the city center: Gare du Nord, Châtelet-Les-Halles, Saint-Michel-Notre-Dame, and Denfert-Rochereau. It costs €12.10 (US$13.50) and, depending on where you get off, can take anywhere from 25 to 40 minutes. Once in Paris proper, you can then take a metro to your destination (keeping in mind that many stations don’t have escalators or elevators, so consider the weight of your luggage) or pop outside for a cab (also keeping in mind you don’t flag down metered taxis from any old place in Paris, but rather find a designated taxi stand and wait).

Alternatively, you can take a bus—either RoissyBus or Le Bus Direct. Bus reservations are not required but you can buy your tickets ahead of time at the links provided.

  • RoissyBus costs €11 and leaves roughly every 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the time of day, and drops you near the Opera Garnier in Paris’s ninth arrondissement, taking about an hour.
  • Le Bus Direct might be worthwhile for those staying further west or south with two lines that leave every 20 minutes and stop at the Eiffel Tower, Trocadero, Etoile/Champs-Elysées, Porte Maillot, Gare de Lyon, and Gare Montparnasse. Rates start at €14.5 depending on where you’re getting off, and the journey takes a bit longer; figure about 45 to 60 minutes if you’re going to the Tower.

Tip: Apps such as CityMapper and Google Maps provide exact departure times of the RER B, metros, and buses, which may help cut your journey time.

Getting to the city by car from CDG

The difference between taking a registered “Taxi Parisien” versus an Uber is not only about price but also about comprehension and logistics. We’ve spelled out the pros and cons below.

Taxi Parisien

  • Pro: A predictable flat fee of €50 (US$56) to any Right Bank location or €55 to the Left Bank
  • Pro: No Wi-Fi necessary
  • Possible con: You should probably be able to properly explain where you’re going in French, though the driver may speak English
  • Possible con: Most cabs are cash only so you should have euros on hand
  • Pro: You’ll pay €45 or less if you take a shared Uber Pool
  • Pro: If you can type, you don’t have to speak French. Simply input your destination’s address and follow the strict instructions on your phone about exactly what terminal door to exit in order to find your ride
  • Pro: Pay in the app, so there’s no need to exchange dollars to euros at the airport
  • Con: You’ll need Wi-Fi and data to fire up the app

Tip: Other French car service apps such as LeCab and Chauffeur Privé offer rates and wait times comparable to those of Uber.

Only eight miles south of Paris, Orly Airport serves some 156 cities globally. It’s a great option for those staying on the Left Bank or in Paris’s southeastern neighborhoods like Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Marais, and Bastille/Charonne.

Getting to the city by public transportation from ORY

There’s no fast commuter train to and from Orly (unless you’re going to CDG to connect to a flight, in which case you’d take a light-rail shuttle service called the Orlyval ).

Rather, the airport is reachable by either one of two buses:

  • OrlyBus leaves every 15 minutes or so and takes about 30 minutes to/from the Denfert-Rochereau metro station in the 14th arrondissement (near the Catacombs). It costs €8.30 (US$9).
  • Le Bus Direct leaves every 20 minutes and makes stops at Etoile/Champs-Elysées, Eiffel Tower, Trocadero, and Gare Montparnasse. It costs €12 and can take as little as a half hour to Gare Montparnasse or as much as an hour to Etoile/Champs-Elysées.

Getting to the city by car from ORY

The same rules for taxis and Ubers spelled out above for CDG apply to Orly, too, though Taxi Parisien flat rates are actually cheaper to and from Orly: €30 (US$33) to Left Bank locations and €35 to ones on the Right Bank.

Beauvais (BVA)

Located a whopping 52 miles outside of Paris, Beauvais Airport mostly services low-cost carriers for short-haul flights around Europe and North Africa. For travelers looking to country-hop to and from France, the cheap fares promised by discount airlines such as Ryanair and Wizz Air may seem appealing—until you realize they sometimes arrive or depart at 6 a.m. and it can take you two hours to get to (or from) the airport. What’s more, the public transport options aren’t convenient—and it ain’t cheap by taxi or Uber. In short, BVA is hardly ever a good idea.

Getting to the city by public transportation from BVA

For €15.40, there’s a regional train (the TER Line 19 , leaving once an hour) connecting to Paris’s Gare du Nord, but you have to transfer between the airport and the Beauvais station by a shuttle or taxi.

Alternatively, there is one option by bus:

  • For €17, you can take a shuttle bus that runs between BVA and the Porte Maillot metro station (which itself is practically outside Paris, all the way northwest of the Tower), but the shuttle takes 90 minutes. When traveling to the airport, you will be asked for your flight reservation to make sure you’ve left three hours prior to departure.

Getting to the city by car from BVA

The cost of getting a taxi or rideshare can be more than the flight itself unless you’re traveling in a group and splitting it several ways. For instance, the flat rate for a taxi from Beauvais to central Paris runs €170 (US$189) for daytime travel and €210 between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. (though an Uber will cost you slightly less than that).

Whether you’re arriving at Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Orly (ORY), or Beauvais (BVA), this guide unveils everything you need to know about each airport, from destinations served to transportation options.

Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG): A Grand Welcome

Yes, this is a lot and soon you will be one of them.

CDG Airport is known to be the biggest Airport in town and home to international flights from all continents, Europe and domestic.

Terminals at Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport

This airport is built around 3 main terminals:

  • Terminal 1 : The oldest, serve international flights
  • Terminal 2 : The biggest and divided in 7 sub-terminals, serves international, european and domestic flights (Where Air France is mostly located)
  • Terminal 3 : The latest and a little further, that serves charters and low-cost carriers

To help you plan your trip, the official website of the airport helps find which terminal for which airline/destination.

Explore the ins and outs of each mode, ensuring you arrive in the heart of Paris effortlessly.

CDG Airport to Paris by Train

The RER train takes approximately 30 minutes, costing around €11.8, while taxis and airport shuttles are also readily available. Obviously you are thinking about taking the train from CDG Airport to Paris , great idea! After all, it is a very convenient and cost effective way to get into the city. We’ve taken it many times and like it. It is pretty suitable if you’re traveling light and on a budget. The train can be pretty crowded during rush hour, but it is a very convenient way for the transit. If you’re 3 or more, considering the price of the ticket per person, then it can be worth being comfortably seated in taxi or van.

The CDG Airport train station (SNCF) is located within Terminal 2, situated between Terminals 2C, 2D, 2E, and 2F.

It is accessible via the free CDGVAL shuttle (from Terminals 1 and 3), the Paris Aiport N1 bus (stops at Terminals 2A, 2C, 2D, 2E, and 2F), and the Paris Aéroport N2 bus (stops at Terminals 2G and 2F).

A few things to know about the train :

  • Cost: around 11,8€
  • From 5:30am until 00:30am
  • Takes 40 min from the center, rides every 20 min. More during rush hour

CDG Airport to Paris by Taxi/Driver

For a comfortable and straightforward journey, consider the road with a taxi, private driver or even Uber.

Taxis are readily available at designated ranks, offering a door-to-door service. They have a flat-fee from airport transits which makes it easy. They usually take any debit/credit car but will often push towards car.

Paris airport taxi fare to center

Visitors to Paris have two travelcard options.

  • The simplest of these is a PARIS VISITE CARD , which can be bought online, or else at any Paris metro or RER station, main train station or airport..  Prices start at €14.90 for one day (zones 1-3),  €24.30 for 2 days, and go up to €81.80 for unlimited travel anywhere on the network for 5 days.
  • Cheaper but more complicated to set up are different Paris NAVIGO PASSES . Two of these are available for visitors a) The easiest navigo pass for tourists is the Navigo Easy pass. This can be bought at any metro or RER station. The card costs 2 €, and can then be loaded (by machine or at a counter) with "T" tickets, either single tickets at €2.15 each, or a "carnet" or 10 single journey tickets at the reduced rate of 17.35 € for 10, and/or a daily Navigo pass, costing from €8.65 for 2 zones, to €20.60 for all five zones.. The pass is not personal, no photo is needed, but two people travelling together will need two passes. b)  For the Navigo Découverte , a passport photo (size 25 a 30 mm) is needed. The pass can be bought at any Metro or RER station. The card itself costs 5€, then it can be loaded from a machine or counter with day, week or month passes.. The day rates are as for the Navigo Easy pass; a week pass costs  €30.75 (all zones), and a month card is €86.40 (all zones)
