Old 97’s is an American alternative and country band, formed in 1993 by Rhett Miller and Murry Hammond, hailing from Dallas, Texas, U.S.

Frontman Rhett Miller and bassist Murry Hammond first collaborated in 1989 on Miller’s debut solo album “Mythologies”. With Miller’s subsequent tour his impressive songwriting and blend of folk and British pop came to the fore, and the two paired up again the year after to form the short-lived project Sleepy Heroes.

Before long the duo enlisted the help of lead guitarist Ken Bethea to record their debut demo, before recruiting drummer Philip Peeples, and officially naming themselves Old 97’s after the country ballad “Wreck of the Old 97”. The band’s debut album “Hitchhike to Rhome” appeared in 1994 to positive critical response and earned Old 97’s an dedicated alt-country fan base. Now signed to the newly operating Bloodshot Records, the band released their sophomore album “Wreck Your Life” in 1995. The album cemented their position within the alt-country genre and led to Old 97’s signing with major-label Elektra Records on the verge of a mainstream breakthrough.

In 1997 Old 97’s made their major-label debut “Too Far to Care” to more positive reviews and an extensive touring schedule to boot, including on the Lollapalooza tour. The band’s subsequent offering “Fight Songs” (1991) produced more of the same highly-polished country-pop songs and led to ever more impressive relentless gigging, however Old 97’s remained on the cusp of a breakthrough that seemed eternally out of reach. Following the release of their fifth studio album “Satellite Rides”, Miller took some time out to record his solo power pop album “The Instigator” in 2002, followed in 2006 by the orchestral “The Believer”.

Old 97’s period of inactivity ended in 2004 with the album “Drag It Up” followed soon after by the live album “Alive & Wired”. In an attempt to recapture some of their roots, the band’s subsequent album “Blame It on Gravity” was recorded in their hometown of Dallas and was argued as a return to form for the band, featuring some of their strongest songs to date. Shortly after bassist Murry Hammond released his own solo album titled “I Don’t Know Where I’m Going But I’m on My Way” in 2008, followed a year later by Miller’s fourth solo self-titled release.

A pair of live albums, initially intended as a double live album, appeared in 2010/11 “The Grand Theatre, Vol. 1” and “The Grand Theatre, Vol. 2”. In a collaboration with Waylon Jenning in 1996, a limited edition EP titled “Old 97’s & Waylon Jennings” was released on Record Store Day in 2013, followed by “Most Messed Up” in 2014, the band’s highest charting album, which reached No. 30 on the Billboard 200.

Live reviews

Old 97’s are notable for help pioneering the alternative country genre in the mid ‘90s with other acts like Uncle Tupelo and The Jayhawks, and their strong slant to rock and roll gives their performances a strong energetic vibe. Lead singer, Rhett Miller, approaches his songwriting by writing lyrics that are heavily influenced by the country genre, which have strong ties to storylines, and his musical presentation is delivered with a stronger force, often encompassing the sound of rockabilly music. Miller’s presents his vocal in a very raspy and sincere way, and often sings songs about his drinking and his rowdy behavior. Miller is often seen with an acoustic guitar on stage creating the richer, deeper sounds of the band’s music while Ken Bethea plays the grittier sounds on the electric guitar. Ken Bethea usually plays a Fender Telecaster, which allows him to get high treble sounds as well as a twang, which enhances the western vibe of Old 97’s.

Old 97’s give a highly intense performance when they take the stage. They blast through songs like “Timebomb” playing it with all of their energy. Rhett Miller exerts all his effort into yelling out the vocals and erratically strums his guitar like a loose canon. Old 97’s also veer into more subtle and beautiful territories with their performance when they play some of their ballads like “Question”, which helps convey Old 97’s diverse range.

Old 97’s play a great range of songs from their albums and even throw in some cover songs like Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried” into the mix. There is never a strong presence of stage theatrics during an Old 97’s concert as the band relies on their high energy performance and their tight chemistry with one another to make the show an impactful experience.

The last time I can remember seeing the Old 97's was back in '99 at Trees Lounge with some friends. The rocked it then, great performance.

I saw them again last night at Borderline in London. The venue is smaller and the boys rocked it better than I could have ever expected. Unfortunately the set was too short due to the hours allowed by Boris. But man, these have still got it. I will definitely see them again, if they tour. And next time I will make sure to be able to meet up with them after the set. Great band! a MUST SEE act!!!

They ROCKED!!! As usual. They were excellent hosts for the event. I was looking forward to hearing them perform stuff from their new album "Graveyard Whistling" which I really like! They didn't play as long as I would have liked but I know they had limitations set upon them. Either way their fun, upbeat, energetic performance was the perfect ending to the night!

Awesome show at one of my favorite venues in Denver, The bend played all their hits and some new songs from their most recent album. The Opening act; Oil Boom, was revived well by the crowd and had a rocking a Texas blues vibe.

"Rock and roll's been very very good to me," Rhett Miller sings on "Longer Than You've Been Alive," an epic six-minute stream-of-consciousness meditation on his life in music. It's a rare moment of pulling back the curtain, on both the excesses and tedium of the world of a touring musician, and it's the perfect way to open the Old 97's new album, 'Most Messed Up.'

"I wrote that song very quickly and didn’t rewrite one word of it," Miller explains. "It's sort of a thesis statement not just for this record, but for my life's work."

To say that rock and roll has been good to the Old 97's (guitarist/vocalist Miller, bassist/vocalist Murry Hammond, guitarist Ken Bethea, and drummer Philip Peeples) would be an understatement. The band emerged from Dallas twenty years ago at the forefront of a musical movement blending rootsy, country-influenced songwriting with punk rock energy and delivery. The New York Times has described their major label debut, 'Too Far To Care,' as "a cornerstone of the 'alternative country' movement…[that] leaned more toward the Clash than the Carter Family." They've released a slew of records since then, garnering praise from NPR and Billboard to SPIN and Rolling Stone, who hailed the band as "four Texans raised on the Beatles and Johnny Cash in equal measures, whose shiny melodies, and fatalistic character studies, do their forefathers proud." The band performed on television from Letterman to Austin City Limits and had their music appear in countless film and TV soundtracks (they appeared as themselves in the Vince Vaughn/Jennifer Aniston movie 'The Break Up'). Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan told The Hollywood Reporter that he put the band on a continuous loop on his iPod while writing the show's final scene.

'Most Messed Up' finds the Old 97's at their raucous, boozy best, all swagger and heart. Titles like "Wasted," "Intervention," "Wheels Off," "Let's Get Drunk And Get It On," and "Most Messed Up" hint at the kind of narrators Miller likes to inhabit, men who possess an appetite for indulgence and won't let a few bad decisions get in the way of a good story.

"A few people in my life said, 'You can't sing 'Let's get drunk and get it on,'" Miller remembers. "I said, 'What do you mean? I've been singing that sentiment for 20 years! I was just never so straightforward about it.'"

It was a trip to Music City that inspired Miller to throw away his inhibitions as songwriter and cut right to the heart of things.

"For me, this record really started in Nashville on a co-write session with John McElroy," he says. "I really admired his wheels off approach to songwriting, And I liked the idea he had for how he thought I should interact with my audience. He said, 'I think your fans want you to walk up to the mic and say fuck.' It was liberating." It reminded me that I don’t have to be too serious or too sincere or heartfelt. I just have to have fun and be honest. I felt like I kind of had free rein to go ahead and write these songs that were bawdier and more adult-themed."

The magic in Miller's songwriting lies in the depth that he lends his characters. Upon closer inspection, the hard partying and endless pursuit of a good time often reveals itself to be a band-aid covering up deeper wounds and emotional scars.

"There's a lot of darkness hidden in this record," he explains. "One of the big Old 97's tricks is when we write about something kind of dark and depressing, it works best when it's a fun sounding song. So it's not until the third or fourth listen that you realize the narrator of this song is a complete disaster."

If that description calls to mind The Replacements, it's no coincidence. Miller is a fan of the Minneapolis cult heroes, and now counts Tommy Stinson among his own friends and fans. Best known as bassist for the Mats and more recently Guns 'n' Roses, Stinson joined the Old 97's in the studio in Austin, Texas, to lay down electric guitar on ## tracks, elevating the sense of reckless musical abandon to new heights and lending the album an air of the Rolling Stones' double-guitar attack. It's a collaboration Miller never would have even imagined in 1994 when the band released their debut.

"We didn’t think we'd last until the year 1997," Miller laughs. "We thought the name would get a little weird when it became 1997, but we decided none of our bands had ever lasted that long, so let's not even worry about it. But as it all started to unfold, we realized we could maybe make a living doing this, and we were all really conscious of wanting to be a career band. It was way more important to us to maintain a really high level of quality, at the expense, perhaps, of having hit singles or fitting in with the trends of the time, and I'm glad we did that."

Twenty years on, it's safe to say rock and roll has indeed been very, very good to the Old 97's.

In nod to Old 97′s, Dallas band Ottoman Turks plans a ‘Tour of Deep Ellum’

Two decades after the 97′s took a lap around the neighborhood, another homegrown group plans to do the same..

The Ottoman Turks' Billy Law, Nathan "Mongol" Wells and Paul Hinojo, pose Friday, July 29,...

By Jonny Auping

6:00 AM on Aug 5, 2022 CDT

Back when Ottoman Turks were still wannabe musicians playing in the garage of front man Nathan “Mongol” Wells in 2009, they knew one thing for certain about the local music scene: AllGood Cafe was a place respected musicians played.

To perform at AllGood, you had to have made a little name for yourself in Dallas, or, at the very least, done something to impress owner Mike Snider, who used to book and promote shows at Sons of Hermann Hall and the now-closed Gypsy Tea Room. But anyone could stop by for lunch, talk music or take in the countless concert posters that make up a sort of Deep Ellum Hall of Fame.

Which poster young musicians find themselves gravitating toward might serve as something of an omen for how they’ll go about making their name in the city . For Wells, it was a poster from 2001 of the Old 97′s Tour of Deep Ellum, a two-night stand in which the Dallas natives, by that point a national success, returned home for performances at Trees and Gypsy Tea Room. That one always drew his attention.

Much surrounding those two nights has been lost to time, including any reviews, descriptions or footage of the 97′s’ shows. Or the fact that lead guitarist Ken Bethea — who conceived of the idea after hearing Reverend Horton Heat did something similar in the early ‘90s — had originally wanted the tour to include Sons of Herman Hall and Bar of Soap before it was whittled down to two shows. Or the record label drama happening at the same time which nearly forced the 97′s to split up. The AllGood poster is perhaps the only scrap of evidence that remains.

The poster for the of the Old 97′s Tour of Deep Ellum in 2001 hangs on the wall of AllGood...

In 2013, Ottoman Turks headlined a set at AllGood Cafe.

“That was the first venue in Deep Ellum where I think we actually had a crowd,” said bassist Billy Law.

“We packed the place out,” Wells remembered. “We were like, ‘We’ve made it. We’re Dallas musicians now.’”

Nearly 10 years later, they have solidified that claim, having sold out gigs all over Deep Ellum and the rest of Dallas-Fort Worth. And on Aug. 11–14 Ottoman Turks will re-create the Tour of Deep Ellum, this time with four consecutive shows, as Bethea had intended, at Three Links, AllGood Cafe, Double Wide and Twilite Lounge. The tour’s poster is a nearly identical re-creation of the one 21 years earlier.

“It’s such a fun idea that’s been in the back of my mind,” Wells said. “It seemed like after all these years it was time to make it happen.”

‘Chaotic and fun’

The original Tour of Deep Ellum might have been seen as something of a victory lap for the Old 97′s. They had released their fifth studio album earlier that year. They’d been enjoying their greatest commercial success up to that point, were touring nationally, became the poster band for the “alt-country” genre and appeared on The Tonight Show a few months prior.

But Deep Ellum was where it had all started for the group. The Old 97′s played venues along Elm, Main and Commerce relentlessly in the early-to-mid ‘90s, an era when the neighborhood also produced bands such as Tripping Daisy and Toadies.

“It’s such a fun idea that’s been in the back of my mind,” Wells said of the tour. “It...

“For me, every venue in Deep Ellum had its own appeal,” said Rhett Miller, the band’s songwriter and front man.

The Old 97′s were regulars at Naomi’s, a long since closed bar on Canton Street that Miller said, “literally could not have been any smaller and have been a functioning bar.”

One night at Naomi’s, Miller stuck the microphone in his mouth and lost a tooth pulling it out. “Everybody there was at risk of getting hit by the blood that came out of my mouth when the tooth came out,” Miller said.

The band scaled up to every size venue the neighborhood had to offer before booking shows all over the country.

If Ottoman Turks share a quality with the Old 97′s, it’s the distillation of Deep Ellum’s overflow of live music, frenetic pace and disregard for genres. Their songs blend country, rock and some sort of cowboy punk. It’s as if Tom Waits, Steve Earle, and Jack White got in a fight in a recording studio — and all of them won.

“I would like to think that, while we’re not the same genre [as the Old 97′s], we have the same vibe: chaotic and fun,” Law said.

In the re-created tour, the AllGood Cafe and Twilite Lounge shows are likely to be slightly less boisterous and will involve bringing musician friends on stage for surprise performances, an element of camaraderie Ottoman Turks wanted to carry on from the original tour. Both Pleasant Grove, the band that played Trees on the original tour, and Sorta, which played Gypsy Tea Room, were rising Dallas groups in 2001. The Old 97′s lent them opening slots to give them a larger platform.

“At the time, that was probably one of the biggest shows that Pleasant Grove had ever played,” said Jeff Ryan, Pleasant Grove’s drummer.

The band Sorta, which became a Dallas favorite, was founded by Trey Johnson, who died earlier this year of health complications. He was also the co-founder of State Fair Records, Ottoman Turks’ record label, and a vocal champion of the band.

The Three Links show will include the bands King Clam and Cliffs. “Cliffs are like our brothers,” Wells said.

“Soulmates,” said Law.

It’s Double Wide, though, on the outskirts of Deep Ellum, that’s nurtured Ottoman Turks’ chops as a rowdy, live band suited to win over eclectic crowds. It is their Naomi’s.

“We wouldn’t exist as a band if Double Wide hadn’t given us all those opportunities,” Wells said. “We’ve probably played there 20 times.”

“Way more than that,” Law corrected, doing the math. “I would say closer to 40 or 50.”

“You’re right, I guess we’re old now,” said Wells, 30.

‘That’s the story of how a band breaks up’

When Wells gazed at the Old 97′s poster in AllGood, he imagined a band on top of the world, but the reality was more complicated for the group.

While the Old 97′s’ March 2001 album, Satellite Rides , was their first to chart on the Billboard Top 200, music download software like Napster was changing the industry landscape, and the group’s label, Elektra Records, was reacting.

Ken Bethea, left, and frontman Rhett Miller of Old 97's perform during the Dia De Los...

“The record industry was at the beginning of its slow collapse,” Miller said.

Eventually, nearly everyone they had worked with directly at Elektra was let go. Satellite Rides had also completed their three-album contract.

Bethea said it was before a show in Chicago when Miller requested the four members meet at a cafe alone. Lunch among only the four was rare; they were close friends, but crew members and others usually lingered as well. Bethea and drummer Phillip Peeples still lived in Dallas, but Miller and bassist Murray Hammond had moved away.

At the cafe, Miller told the three that the record label was dropping the band, but was keeping him on as a solo act.

“That’s the story of how a band breaks up, right?” said Bethea.

Miller’s songwriting had long stood out to listeners. To Bethea, a Rhett Miller solo career seemed destined to overshadow the 97′s as a whole. The band had lasted eight years. Other groups from their era in Dallas had already broken up or were on the wrong end of a peak by 2001.

The Tour of Deep Ellum had already been organized before the meeting in Chicago. But now it took on a different tone. It seemed the band would be finishing things, right back where they started.

“There is no doubt that is what we were thinking and talking about,” Bethea said.

Fears of a breakup eventually proved unwarranted. True, Miller has enjoyed a successful solo career. But since the Deep Ellum tour in 2001, the Old 97′s have released 14 albums together. Later this month they will play a run of shows with the Turnpike Troubadours.

“I think there’s probably something to be said for that tour of Deep Ellum being a factor in helping us remember how much we loved each other,” Miller said.

Bethea, who is in a board game group with Ottoman Turks drummer Paul Hinojo, said that he “100 percent” will be in attendance for one of the Deep Ellum shows next week.

Having played together for years, Ottoman Turks now face their own individual pursuits, similar to the 97′s. Wells and Law both have solo albums coming out. And Joshua Ray Walker, who performed on The Tonight Show in February, won’t be with the band in Deep Ellum due to obligations from his solo tour. The band was a three-piece before Walker joined and are well-equipped to perform live without him.

But the Tour of Deep Ellum is no last hurrah for Ottoman Turks. They are currently writing and working on material for a third album.

“To me, the Turks will be forever,” Law said.

It’s a confidence that Miller also took into those Deep Ellum shows.

“I never thought the 97′s were going to split up,” Miller said. “I knew that it was rough, but I always believed, and still do, in the collective vision.”

When Ottoman Turks play loud, chaotic music all over Deep Ellum next weekend, it will be partly as tribute and partly because it is what they’re good at. If history repeats itself, they have a lot of music left in them.

Old 97’s Never Put Out an Album as a ‘Cash Grab.’ But Rhett Miller Says It Crossed His Mind

By Josh Crutchmer

Josh Crutchmer

If you wonder what motivates a band after three decades together, ask the Old 97’s. “It feels so unlikely that we’re here, in this moment, in our career and in our lives, and we’ve built something that’s really pretty unimpeachable,” Rhett Miller tells me. We’re sitting in his office — the basement room in his Hudson Valley, New York, home where he writes, seeks inspiration, and often streams solo shows online. “I don’t want to fuck it up.”

The Old 97’s are capping off a year spent celebrating their 30th anniversary with their 13th studio album, American Primitive , out April 5. The record features 13 tracks showcasing the band’s range and manages to sound both like a fresh project and classic 97’s. The hauntingly reflective “Where the Road Goes” dropped in February as the first single.

“This record reminded me a lot of our Grand Theatre stuff,” Hammond says in a video call with the rest of the group, referencing their 2010-11 back-to-back albums, which began as a simulated concert residency to work up the songs. “There was not much pre-production, we really kind of winged it, and we kind of reaped the fruits of that. It’s kind of neat when you don’t prep for things. Even if that’s not a great place to live, it’s a fun place to visit.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

The album’s curveball is “Incantation,” a slow, stripped-down track that centers Miller’s vocals while he laments “an invitation to rejoin the human race.” Tucker, he says, rescued the song from the demo pile.

“Now that I have kids who are entering adulthood, I get to re-experience all these firsts with them,” Miller says — his son, Max, is college-aged, and his daughter, Soleil, is a high-school senior. “One thing that it makes me do, as I look back at mistakes I was making in my younger years, is find that I’m giving myself a much more kind interpretation of things I have regretted over the years. The song ‘Incantation’ is me looking back at my young self, and saying, ‘All those things that you have been beating yourself up about for so many years, you don’t deserve the pain you’re putting yourself through.’”

On 'American Primitive,' the Old 97's Just Want You to Enjoy Life for 41 Minutes

Old 97's celebrate survival in new song 'where the road goes' with peter buck, see kevin bacon and old 97's play their ‘guardians of the galaxy’ christmas song on ‘fallon’.

“There was never a time when they sold millions and millions of albums — though I always thought they should — but 30 years later their legacy endures,” Thomas tells Rolling Stone in an email. “There are so many bands that may have had bigger moments, but so many of them disappeared — while the Old 97’s have only more strongly solidified their place in music history.  It’s a testament to the power of great songs played by great musicians.”

Such respect from peers has been a hallmark of the Old 97’s long before the author Stephen King broke the news on social media that they were releasing American Primitive . One of the showpiece concerts on the band’s anniversary tour was a sold-out, rain-soaked party at New York City rooftop venue Pier 17, with Drive-By Truckers and American Aquarium opening. The Truckers’ Patterson Hood joined the 97’s during their headlining set on R.E.M.’s “Driver 8.”

Drive-By Truckers have played out a similar career arc. So, it’s no surprise to learn that Hood admires both the music and longevity of the 97’s.

“Ten years is a milestone for a band that few ever reach,” he says. “Twenty, with the same personnel? Very few. The Old 97’s have now passed thirty years with the same four guys. They have been great and prolific and continued to grow and morph as they’ve all gotten older — yet somehow aren’t aging. Excellent songs and one of the most rip-roaring live shows anywhere.”

Hammond is quick to point out that those fan favorites were once new cuts on an album. He points to 2014’s “Longer Than You’ve Been Alive” as a late-era song that the group now has to play at every gig.

The touring dynamic has evolved along with the setlists. After a lifetime of hard partying, Miller found sobriety in 2015. The vibe, backstage and on the bus, chilled.

“Until about seven or eight years ago, our days would have been filled with drinking and partying,” Bethea says of the band’s past routine. “We’ve kind of moved past that, which is a good thing overall. At night, we do our set, and it’s just fun. I have fun nearly every time, as long as I’m not having a crackling wire, or something physical that I can’t manage.”

Peeples quips about another habit that has become integral to the band’s touring life: “You usually wake up to Rhett wanting to go play disc golf somewhere,” he says.

For his part, Miller seems locked into a perpetual state of creativity. If he’s not touring with the 97’s or keeping a steady slate of solo gigs, he’s writing, or talking about writing. When the band makes a record, Miller brings more music than can fit. He recently started a Substack, titled Time and Temperature , often writing multiple newsletters a week. He hosts a podcast, Wheels Off with Rhett Miller , showcasing candid discussions with artists, authors, and writers about the creative process. He records it in this same office he’s holed up in, talking about the band while his miniature poodle, Ziggy, dozes off on the couch.

The familiarity of home, and the rolling hills of the Hudson Valley, keep the drive to create from consuming Miller, but just barely — especially when it comes to the Old 97’s.

“I feel like I’ve always been hungry. I can’t imagine ever not being hungry to make the next record, or prove something,” he says.

As a writer, Miller has come a long way since he derided songs that get self-referential on “Longer Than You’ve Been Alive,” and his self-realizations permeate American Primitive . He reckons with one of the darkest moments of his life — a suicide attempt when he was 14 — on “Where the Road Goes.”

“I did not address that for years,” Miller says. “But I thought I should let that be a part of my story, because it’s true, and because it’s something we need to de-stigmatize generally, for kids. It’s embarrassing to admit any kind of weakness, but especially that kind of weakness. It seemed so dramatic. And then, if you talk about it, you feel like you’re just dining out on it. I always thought there was some trope of a suicide attempt that was not so much a cry for help, but a look-at-me gesture.”

He adds that self-doubt and the idea of being “less than” is inherent in the human condition. He calls it “the art killer” and says we need to embrace it to take away its destructive power.

“We acknowledge it, and we say, ‘I know you’re always going to be a part of me. I love you, because you came from a moment in my youth,’” he says. “’But I don’t have to listen to it.’”

Miller’s personal evolution reflects that of the band. Decades removed from industry pressures, they are more comfortable as an outfit than ever, and it shows on American Primitive . The songwriting and music are fresh — Hammond even plays a harmonium. But the sound is vintage: loud and unpolished, neither country nor punk. Not even “Americana.”

Miller is aware of this. He points out that many of his musician friends have long-since been embraced by the Americana genre while his band never was. “That world, they’re always getting invited to these big parties, and the Old 97’s never get invited, because we’re not country enough, or we’re too loud, or we jump around too much,” he says. “People playing the Americana Awards tell me that we’re their favorite band, but for whatever reason, we never get invited.”

Supreme court justices compare bribes to taking a teacher to cheesecake factory, trump and his team are already lying about what happened in court, neil young to perform lost 'cortez the killer' verses on summer tour with crazy horse.

“Watching that, I went back thinking how the Pixies are still loved because they’re doing this thing that they have always done. They’re being who they were always meant to be,” he continues. “So, let’s let the Old 97’s be who we were always meant to be.”

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
