Gov. tim walz appoints new explore minnesota tourism director.

Gov. Tim Walz on Monday appointed Lauren Bennett McGinty as the new director of Explore Minnesota Tourism. She takes over the role as the industry continues to rebound from the toll of the COVID-19 pandemic .

Bennett McGinty replaces former director John Edman, who retired in June after holding the job for more than two decades under four governors.

"I am honored to take on this important role as our tourism industry continues to work its way out of the pandemic. As we face challenges on our path to a new normal, we need to find creative ways to engage intra and interstate travelers," Bennett McGinty said in a statement. "I am committed to listening to the needs of tourism partners across Minnesota to deliver the best hospitality in the country and help travelers discover the unique experiences that exist in our great state."

Explore Minnesota is the state's official tourism office, creating campaigns to inspire people to visit and travel across the state. But the industry was hit hard by travel restrictions in 2020 during the height of the pandemic.

Travel spending in Minnesota decreased by $8.6 billion in 2020, according to state estimates. Leisure and hospitality employment decreased to an estimated 202,000 jobs, a 27% drop from 2019.

For the last decade, Bennett McGinty worked in various roles with Minnesota nonprofits, most recently as executive director of the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild. In that position she directed strategic planning, marketing and events for more than 160 breweries.

Walz said Bennett McGinty's marketing background will help boost Minnesota tourism after the pandemic.

"She will bring her expertise in marketing to engage our residents and attract new visitors and talent to our state," he said in a statement.

Her appointment is effective Nov. 15.

Welcome to cook county.

There’s so much to see and do in Cook County, you’ll want to make the most of every minute. Let us help you plan the ultimate trip up north. We designed our website as a tool to guide you through planning your vacation, so browse at will and discover our unique communities and outdoor adventure possibilities. Check out our calendar for arts and cultural events, races, concerts, festivals and more. Up here, each season holds a bit of magic and we often find our visitors return again and again to experience it all. Our home is your playground. Welcome!

Communities

Lutsen/tofte/schroeder, grand marais, gunflint trail, grand portage, discover the north shore region, view trails, lutsen, tofte, schroeder, boundary waters canoe area wilderness, lutsen, tofte, schroder.

Strung along the Lake Superior shore like beads on a necklace, the communities of Lutsen, Tofte and Schroeder serve as the southern gateway to Cook County, Minnesota. This region is the perfect vacation destination, whether you’re looking for romance, adventure, relaxation or family fun. It all happens here, where the great Lake Superior meets the ancient Sawtooth Mountain Range. There’s always something new to explore.

Grand Marais street with Northern Lights and Gunflint Trail sign

Lutsen Mountains

Artsy and quirky, the North Shore harbor village of Grand Marais welcomes creatives, families and adventure-seekers alike. The accolades almost speak for themselves. Grand Marais has been named America’s Coolest Small Town (Budget Travel Magazine), Top 10 Beach Getaways (Outside Magazine), and Next Great Adventure Town (National Geographic Adventure Magazine). In Grand Marais you’ll meet some of the most friendly, creative and talented people – both visitors and locals alike.

The number one question we hear from first time visitors is “ what is the Gunflint Trail? ” Do not let the name deceive you, once upon a time the Gunflint Trail was a primitive trail used primarily by foot or dogsled to move goods down to the port of Grand Marais on Lake Superior for trade. Flash forward several decades to today and you’ll find the Gunflint Trail is a  57-mile paved National Scenic Byway  that winds through the heart of the Superior National Forest at the edge of the  Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) and Canada’s Quetico National Park .

At the very tip of Minnesota’s Arrowhead Region, right on the Canadian border, sits the community of Grand Portage. It’s a place of enduring tradition, vibrant culture and access to outdoor adventure. Home to the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, this thriving community is one of the earliest Ojibwe settlements in Minnesota. It has long been a legendary meeting place, bringing people from many cultures together for centuries. Come to meet, connect and enjoy the people and things to do in Grand Portage.

BWCA Wilderness

Millions of years ago, ancient glaciers carved out the oldest rocks in the world. These antique carvings now make up the thousands of crystal clear lakes, rugged cliffs, hills, rocky shorelines and pine studded islands that are located in the northeastern most tip of the US and Canadian border in Minnesota. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) is where silence and serenity are here for you to discover. You will hear no traffic, ringing phones or notifications of any kind. Only the haunting call of the Minnesota loon lulling you to sleep.
