Ford House, Meadow Brook Hall open holiday season with tours

Those with a passion for historic homes, lights and the holidays have two great options this season. Grosse Pointe Shore’s Ford House and Rochester’s Meadow Brook Hall are offering visitors two grand ways to experience their properties with outdoor light shows and indoor holiday home tours.

The Ford House opens its holiday season Thursday with the debut of Starry Lights, a completely new light attraction. Created by Wixom-based company Blue Water Technologies, the same company that creates the light show for Glenlore Trails in Commerce Township. It features an immersive and interactive light display on the grounds of the estate.

“We were really impressed with what they did (at Glenlore Trails) and wanted to have a whole different experience for visitors,” said Clare Pfeiffer, the Ford House’s director of communications and engagement. “It’s that kind of technology but put into context with the Ford House.”

The light show begins at the visitor center, taking guests on a three-quarter  mile walk to the house, through the meadow, to the play house and back around, experiencing a series of projections, LED screens and animations along the way. With the interactive component, visitors will experience lights that may change or move with them, as well as surprises like singing trees. Video animations that tell stories, as well as vintage home videos of the Ford family, will be projected on to the façade of the house.

“It will be just a really neat experience and completely different than what we’ve done in the past but really fun and interactive and a nice way to get out and do something at the holidays,” Pfeiffer said.

In addition to the light show, guests can experience the Ford House’s new visitor center that opened earlier this spring. The 40,000 square-foot building features its new restaurant, the Continental, which will be open for guests to enjoy before or after their walk, though reservations are recommended. Guests will also be able to enjoy concessions and a warming station by the house with hot coca, spiced cider and snacks.

On the inside, visitors can enjoy self-guided tours at their leisure to experience an early-20th century Christmas like the Ford family would have done. The home will feature traditional holiday décor, including a variety of Christmas trees and a finely set dining room table.

“When somebody walks into the house, they get a nice, warm family Christmas feel,” Pfeiffer said.

Further northeast, Meadow Brook Hall is debuting its first ever light show with Winter Wonder Lights. The event features light displays throughout the grounds with varying themes that correspond with different aspects of the home, like chimney-shaped lanterns and stained-glass projects that echo the design of the house, or snowflakes made from horseshoes in a nod to the family’s love for horses.

“It’s just another level of connecting the history of Meadow Brook with the outdoor experience,” said Meadow Brook’s Director of External Relations Shannon O'Berski. “But if you knew none of that, it’s still incredibly cool.”

The grounds will also have festive concessions, like glow-in-the-dark cotton candy and seasonal drinks, as well as an outdoor café and bonfires.

Visitors to Winter Wonder Lights will also get a peek at the inside of the home with a delineated path that takes them through the main floor, which O'Berski said answers the question of “What does it look like inside that building?”

“There’s nothing more intriguing than seeing this house all lit and wondering what’s inside,” she said.

For the full home experience, guests can take part in Meadow Brook’s annual Holiday Home Tour, which is celebrating its 50th year.

The self-guided tour gives visitors access to all three levels of the home, decked out in opulent holiday décor, including 50 Christmas trees, hundreds of feet of garland, thousands of lights and a 10-foot tall poinsettia tree created by 150 live plants. A child-friendly scavenger hunt invites participants to follow footprints from “Cleo,” the home’s former family dog, to locate specific aspects of the house.

“It’s something different to do, and it makes it really engaging,” O'Berski said.

Santa will also be making visits to both homes this season. The Ford House will offer two “Breakfasts with Santa” on Dec. 12 and 19, where Santa will visit with guests during their meal and hear children’s Christmas wishes. Meadow Brook’s “Santa Saturdays” adds live reindeer to the mix for children to visit as well.

Masks are required indoors at both estates.

Ford Mansion at Morristown National Historical Park

Ford Mansion at Morristown National Historical Park

The Ford Mansion at Morristown National Historical Park is where General George Washington stayed during the Continental Army’s encampment at Morristown during the winter of 1779-80. Entrance into the mansion is by guided tour only.

Ford Mansion tour days and times vary based on the season. Call the (973) 539-2016 x 210 to get the latest schedule. Tours last about 45 minutes.

Entrance into the Ford Mansion at Morristown National Historical Park is by guided tour only. Free tickets are obtained at the Washington’s Headquarters Museum , which is located a short walk from the mansion. While free, you still need a ticket to join a tour.

There is a limit of 10 people per tour, and you can only get tickets for the next tour that has available tickets. For example, you can’t come in first thing in the morning and ask for tickets to the 3 PM tour unless all tickets for tours prior to 3 PM have already been sold. The exception is if you have more people in your group than there are tickets remaining for the next tour, in which case you can get tickets for the tour after that.

I visited the park in late June and took two tours, one on a Sunday and one during the week. On Sunday I showed up about ten minutes before the 11 AM tour and had no problem getting a ticket—there were ten people in my group. However, tickets get harder to come by as the day wears on. The lady at the information desk told me that by 2 PM on weekends all of the tickets for the rest of the day are usually gone. Also, the busiest day is Saturday, and most tours sell out. During the week I had no problem getting a ticket.

MANSION HISTORY

The Ford Mansion was built by industrialist Jacob Ford between 1772 and 1774. A colonel in the Morris County Militia, Ford died in 1777 of pneumonia that he caught while on duty, so by the time the winter of 1779 rolled around, the house was owned by his widow, Theodosia. She allowed George and Martha Washington to stay at the house during the Continental Army’s winter encampment at Morristown from December 1779 until early June 1780. In addition to her four children, her six servants, and the Washingtons, the house was occupied by five of Washington’s aides (one was Alexander Hamilton) and eighteen of his servants (slaves included), not to mention visitors with their own staffs of servants who stayed for short durations throughout the winter. At times there were as many as one hundred people in the house, with up to 80 percent of them being servants.

High ranking officers, and not just George Washington, stayed in Morristown at private residences. At such homes they enjoyed a warm fire and quality food and drink. In the meantime, just five miles away at Jockey Hollow, lower ranking officers and enlisted men had to endure bitter cold and near starvation. Over one hundred men died from various causes by the time spring rolled around.

After the war, the Ford Family descendants lived in the house until selling it in 1870 to four men who converted it into a museum. Business went well until the Great Depression hit in 1929. When the men could no longer pay the bills, they donated the property to the National Park Service. In 1933, Morristown National Historical Park was created. It was the first Historical Park in the National Park system.

A tour of the Ford Mansion begins in the Washington’s Headquarters Museum. After a brief introduction, the guide will take visitors to the mansion. There are two floors in the house, and there is no elevator. Those in wheelchairs or those who have trouble climbing stairs will not be able to attend (the museum, however, is handicap accessible).

I went on the mansion tour twice because the first time around I forgot to load my camera with a working battery. I had two different guides, so I can say that the topics discussed depend on the guide. The first was a lady who focused on the Fords, the house itself, how the upper class society people spent the very cold winter, and how all of the different people in the house coped with each other. The second guide was a man who talked more about Washington’s use of the house, the conditions during the winter of 1779-80, and the war itself.

The tour begins in the first floor parlor where Washington’s staff members set up an office. Supposedly it was so cold in the room that even with the fireplace going the inks at the tables near the windows often froze. The tall secretary desk and the main table are original pieces that belonged to the Fords and were used by Washington and his men. The rest of the items in the room are authentic antiques from the 1700s.

Washington had his own office in a separate room nearby. None of the furnishings in this room are original.

Theodosia Ford gave up the master bedroom to George and Martha Washington. Most likely Washington had his own bed, for he was too tall to use standard beds of the time. The mirror on the wall, dresser, chair, and the small dressing table are original to the Fords and were most likely used by the Washingtons.

Two other bedrooms were used by Washington’s five aides. Three aides slept in one room and two in the other. They had their own camp beds similar to the ones on display. The bed near the fireplace with no covering is an authentic antique camp bed, while the others are reproductions. When moving, the beds could be folded up and packed into a wagon.

The bedroom where Theodosia Ford stayed was the dining room under normal circumstances. It also served as the family room for her and the children since most of the other rooms in the house were taken by guests. The chair with the metal plaque on the back is an original Ford Family dining room chair.

With so many people crammed into the house, every nook and cranny had to be used as a sleeping space, including the hallways. This is where the Ford boys slept.

The kitchen was extremely large for the time, which shows how wealthy the Fords were. Notice the oven built into the right side of the fireplace.

The servants lived on the upper floor. The ceiling remained unfinished because there was no need to spend more money than necessary on the servants’ quarters.

There is one item in the house that actually belonged to George Washington: one of his travel chests. It is not known why he left it behind, but it remained in the house when the Ford’s lived there and when it was operated as a museum.

GROSSE POINTE SHORES, MI - A new holiday lights nighttime walkthrough has been illuminated for the season at one of Michigan’s most historic homes, the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House.

Located at 1100 Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe Shores, this house was designed by Albert Kahn. Edsel and Eleanor Ford moved into this estate in 1928. Edsel was the only child of Clara and Henry Ford. Edsel and Eleanor had four children.

The holiday lights outdoor experience is called Starry Nights and opened on Thursday, November 18. Visitors can take a stroll along the estate’s pathways where they’ll experience interactive lights and sound, projected animations and more.

The Starry Lights experience is produced by Bluewater Technologies Group , the same group behind Glenlore Trails in Commerce Township .

“We noticed Glenlore Trails and thought it was a really cool outdoor experience. I even took my family out there,” Clare Pfeiffer, dir. of communications and engagement at the Ford House told MLive. “We had been looking to change up our holiday light walk and were inspired by what they did and reached out to them. Turns out to be a great partnership for both of us. They have such cool, creative technology for light experiences we could never do on our own.”

The outdoor experience is 3/4 of a mile and takes place every Thursday through Sunday evening through January 9. Tickets , which can be purchased here , are $20 for adults in advance ($25 at entrance), $12 for kids ($15 at entrance).

Senior Adventurers group resumes trips with visit to Edsel and Eleanor Ford House

ford mansion christmas tour

After a months-long hiatus, the Senior Adventures group at First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham made a trip to visit the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores. Donna and Brian Zabowski led the group.

The beautiful estate was built between 1926 and 1929, with further development continuing in the 1930s and beyond. The house sits along Lake St. Clair and is listed as a National Historic Landmark. It features a visitors center and The Continental Restaurant, which opened this year.

Edsel Ford was the only child of Henry and Clara Ford. He became president of Ford Motor Company and was married to Eleanor. She was the niece of J. L. Hudson and was a philanthropist and society leader. They bought the lakefront property from Henry Ford and hired Albert Kahn to be the architect.

The Fords and Kahn traveled to England to study the architecture of manor homes prior to the design of their home. The resulting home has many architectural details purchased from European homes and castles, as well as lavish wooden furniture that is centuries old.

Docents led the tours of the beautiful home decorated for Christmas. They provided details about the lifestyle of Edsel, Eleanor and their four children, as well as information about the rooms and their decor.

Fascinating stories evolved. In the dining room a large table was beautifully set as well as a smaller table. The docent noted that there was no chandelier because Eleanor preferred candlelight. The smaller table was for the children and their governess. At age 12 the children could join the adults.

The second story featured the four-room suite for Eleanor and Edsel including a sitting room, bedroom, bathroom and dressing room. In the sitting room Eleanor handled business affairs, correspondence, entertained guests and occasionally ate meals. The floral decor was added after Edsel died in 1943. She lived in their home until her death in 1976.

“The sitting room for Eleanor is very beautiful and elegant,” Valerie Derrick, one of the guests, said.

The bedrooms of the children were also interesting to see. The rooms were all connected together, Jack and Jill style. The governess’ room was located between the youngest boys’ rooms. Edsel II’s room featured more modern decor including a table with a built-in radio and a modern bathroom.

The library on the first floor was the family room for the Fords. The room was purchased in England. The Ford family had a warm and affectionate family life. They all enjoyed reading and had an extensive collection of books. Family Christmas celebrations were held there, and games were played year round.

In Edsel’s study, an American flag was displayed. It was a gift from Admiral Richard Byrd and had a note thanking Edsel for his support of Byrd’s expedition to the South Pole. An inconspicuous door led to the darkroom Ford used tor his photography hobby.

The children had a separate entry door to the home with a mudroom attached. A hidden door connected to a stairway and a basement playroom. There were many hidden doors and passages in the home.

One hidden passage led to the garage area where Edsel Ford went to meet his chauffeured transportation. On some occasions he traveled in his boat to get to the Ford Rouge Plant. He dug a channel and used the sand to create Bird Island, which attracts migrating birds and has a path for viewers.

Edsel Ford was a major benefactor for the Detroit Institute of Arts. He supported the murals painted by Diego Rivera and donated many valuable paintings. Reproductions of donated paintings by Renoir, Matisse and others are featured throughout the house, contributing to the joy in seeing all the beautiful furnishings.

Although visiting the Ford House in December did not enable the group to see the gardens, descriptions of the work of landscape architect Jens Jensen enlightened them about this additional beautiful feature of the grounds.

A children’s playhouse is another feature of the grounds. It was a gift to seven year old Josephine Ford on her seventh birthday. It is built to 2/3 scale.

“As I visited the house, I looked around and imagined being a part of life there and the mindset of the time,” Brian Zabowski said.

“The legacy is amazing, it is so nice that we can enjoy it today,” Bazil Hunt added.

Others may enjoy the beautiful Ford House for tours. Contact 313- 884-4222 for information.

Ford Cove Project

Ford House, the historic estate of Edsel and Eleanor Ford, is teaming up with the Great Lakes Commission (GLC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for a project to restore disappearing wildlife habitats along the shoreline of Ford Cove on Lake St. Clair — part of Michigan’s Great Lakes waterway.

Experience the historic family home of Edsel Ford, the only son of Henry Ford, and his wife, Eleanor. The estate is located on a sprawling estate with beautiful grounds and gardens on the shore of Lake St. Clair in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan, north of Detroit.

The estate was their home, where the couple raised their children — Henry II, Benson, Josephine, and William Clay — entertained friends and enjoyed hobbies. When Eleanor passed, she opened the estate to the public.

Now a National Historic Landmark, visitors from all over the world come to wander, wonder, and explore the beauty of this 1928 National Historic Landmark and uncover a unique piece of the American automotive story in metro Detroit.

The estate includes the historic residence and outbuildings, 87 acres of ground and gardens, and a new Visitor Center with exhibits, dining, shopping, and special event spaces. Ford House is open year-round for grounds walks, tours, educational programs, special events, private rentals, dining, shopping, and more.

Whatever you choose, there’s a path for you here and a story behind every corner.
