17 Things To Do on Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas Cruise + 2020 Itinerary

Excited to go on your next cruise? You’re in luck! Read all about Quantum of the Seas cruise by Royal Caribbean, one of the World’s leading luxury cruise lines.

As you know, Royal Caribbean operates cruises all over the globe. In this guide, I’ll be sharing my cruise experience on Quantum of the Seas , which is currently sailing in East Asia and Southeast Asia.

I used to think of cruise ships as giant ferries decked with a pool area and cramped cabins. Now, my perception has been totally changed after going on my first Royal Caribbean cruise.

Quantum of the Seas is not your typical cruise ship, it’s more of an all-inclusive resort combined with a theme park, ON SEA! You can go skydiving, surfing, bumper cars, rock climbing and more. With all the incredible activities onboard, you’ll be asking yourself “Am I really having this experience on a cruise ship?”

Scroll down for a list of top things to do. PLUS extra tips that can help you plan and enjoy the most out of your cruise.

I’ve included photos from my Instagram page @detouristaHQ . Feel free to use IG’s “Save” feature and check out my feed for more travel inspiration.

17 Attractions & Things to Do

1. enjoy your luxurious stateroom.

Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

It was my first time to go on a Royal Caribbean cruise & I was especially excited to check out the accommodations onboard.

I stayed in their balcony stateroom and it did not disappoint! The space was certainly big enough for my lonesome. I enjoyed restful sleep on the extra comfy bed plushed with luxurious crisp linens. The stateroom is designed for two people and it can accommodate up to four people thanks to the pull-out sofa bed.

All staterooms and suites are maintained by a stateroom attendant. The bed was pristinely made up every time I came into the room.

I loved the balcony & sitting area. It’s the perfect place to unwind after enjoying the many activities onboard and shore excursion tours. There’s in-room WiFi available, so you can stay connected while you’re on holiday.

2. Eat All You Can, All Day, Every Day

Windjammer Marketplace - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Rest assured you can indulge in delicious food during the entire journey. There’s over 20 food & beverage options onboard.

Quantum of the Seas offers complimentary restaurants and cafes featuring buffet-style dining or multi-course menus. These complimentary options are included in the cruise fare. You can grab or order all-you-can from breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even satisfy your late-night cravings.

Complimentary dining at Quantum of the Seas

Windjammer Marketplace — Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Continental. Beautiful sea views especially from the al-fresco area at the back.

Café @ Two70° — Open for breakfast and lunch.

Cafe Promenade  — Open 24 hours.

3. Indulge in Specialty Dining

Jamie's Italian - Quantum of the Seas

You can also dine at the specialty dining restaurants onboard (for a fee, in addition to the cruise fare). During the cruise, we tried Jamie’s Italian, the restaurant created celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. Whatever you can find in a Jamie’s Italian restaurant on land, the same product you can find on the ship. The main difference is that they charge a flat fee, which includes most of the items on the menu. You can try different dishes to your heart and stomach’s content!

Specialty and ala-carte dining at Quantum of the Seas

Jamie’s Italian — Italian restaurant by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

Devinly Decadence — American Healthy Cooking.

Chops Grille — American-style steakhouse.

Izumi — Pan Asian, Japanese.

Kung Fu Panda Noodle Shop

La Patisserie

Solarium Bistro

Johnny Rockets

4. Get Immersed in Starwater

Starwater show at Two70 - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Starwater is one of the best performance shows I’ve seen anywhere, on land and at sea! It’s one attraction you shouldn’t miss! I was left spellbound by the caliber of the talent plus the immersive high-tech visuals at the Two70 theatre.

I was completely mesmerized by the singing, dancing & choreography. Many of the numbers include aerial acrobatic feats, which was stunning to watch. Elevating the theatrics beyond anything I would have expected on a cruise is the animated backdrop, six Roboscreens and a panoramic Visarama projection screen displaying stunning digital imagery. The 12K high definition Visarama screen spans the entire back of the ship and is three decks high!

5. Relax at the Pool Areas and Sun Deck

Outdoor Pool Deck 14 - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

You can find Quantum of the Seas’ swimming pools on Deck 14. There’s a large outdoor pool surrounded by sun loungers where you can get a good tan. Beside it is the H2O Zone, a mini water park for kids.

A giant LED screen overlooks the outdoor pool. Fancy watching movies at night, under the stars?

I’m sure my fellow Asians would be happy to know there’s a covered pool area protected by a soaring glass roof and the adults-only Solarium with cascading pools reminiscent of a tropical stream. Four Jacuzzi-style hot-jetted tubs called Whirlpools are also found on the deck beside the outdoor and indoor pools.

6. Grab a Snack and Coffee at Two70°

Two70° deserves a special mention because it’s one of my favorite parts of the ship. I’ve already mentioned that it’s used as a theatre at night for the Starwater show. During the day, Two70° transforms into a beautiful space that’s part cafe, part bar, and part activity space. The Visarama screen is hidden away, revealing the giant floor-to-ceiling glass windows with magnificent 270-degree sea views.

Two70 - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

The adjacent Cafe Two70 (complimentary) serves breakfast and lunch. Two70° is THE place to enjoy coffee and food with a scenic ambiance.

7. See the View from North Star

The North Star is one of the iconic features of the ship that’s easy to spot. Like a unicorn’s horn, the crane-like structure can be found soaring on top of the ship. At the end is a glass capsule-shaped viewing pod that rises 300 feet above sea level and provides 360-degree views.

North Star - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

While the ship is in port, in cities like Hong Kong and Singapore where the downtown area is relatively near the cruise terminal, the North Star offers beautiful views overlooking the cityscape. While at sea, the North Star’s pod can be maneuvered out over the water providing a thrilling view.

8. Go Skydiving at Ripcord by iFly

Ripcord by iFly - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Ever wanted to know what’s it like to float on air? Well, you can have a go at RipCord by iFly and have your flying experience at seas. Quantum of the Seas is the first-ever ship to have a wind tunnel installed on a cruise ship. It was my first time to try a free-fall skydiving simulator. It was a lot of fun from suiting up to the actual flight, which lasted around “60 seconds.”

9. Hang Ten at FlowRider

FlowRider - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Found beside Ripcord by iFly is the surf simulator called FlowRider, another exciting feature that’s available on Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships. The FlowRider allows participants to catch artificially generated waves by “bodyboarding” (with a boogie board) or “flowboarding” (similar to surfing but with a smaller board).

10. Get Active

Fitness Gym - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

There are plenty of options onboard for those who want to stay fit during the cruise or simply want to do something active between rounds at the buffet. The fitness gym is complete with cardio machines, weight machines, and free weights. There’s even a dedicated space to do yoga. Best of all, the gym, which occupies almost the entire forward (front) part of Deck 16, offers amazing unobstructed sea views.

If you want to take in the view and sea breeze while running laps, you can even find a 553-meter running/jogging track on Deck 15.

The multi-purpose SeaPlex indoor sports and entertainment arena hosts different activities including soccer, basketball, volleyball and organized activities like dance classes.

11. Play Games

Seaplex bumper cars - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

The SeaPlex is also a great venue for games and fun activities. Here, you can find areas for foosball, table tennis, air hockey, the Xbox Live Lounge, and an arcade room. Bumper cars and rollerskating sessions are held at the SeaPlex. You can check the timings of all activities in the Cruise Compass (daily schedule planner).

12. See the Royal Theatre Shows

Royal Theater show - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Another good reason to check the Cruise Compass is the schedule of the evening shows at the Royal Theatre. I was impressed with all the entertaining shows that we watched! Like Starwater, the shows feature world-class performers and spectacular choreography thanks to Royal Caribbean’s own in-house production company.

13. Go Shopping

Royal Esplanade - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Head to the shops near the Royal Esplanade on Deck 4 and The Via on Deck 5 for your retail therapy session. Enjoy duty-free shopping & and a wide selection from health & wellness products, make-up, watches & eye-wear to art pieces.

14. Explore The Decks

Butterfly Wall at the Elevators (Lifts) - Quantum of the Seas by

With a total of 16 floors, the massive Quantum of the Seas offers lots of Instagramable photo opportunities. Here are some of my favorite spots:

Royal Esplanade

Bird’s eye view of the whitewater trailing behind the cruise ship — Open area at the aft (back) of Deck 14. Al-fresco area at the backmost part of Windjammer. Have your photographer go up the stairs for a stunning top-to-bottom angle.

Giant Magenta Bear — Deck 15, beside the rock climbing wall

The Via — In front of Jamie’s Italian and Tiffany & Co.

Butterfly Wall — Aft Elevator Lifts. A glass-bottom floor can be found at the stairs Deck 14-15.

Retro Van and Carpe Diem Wall — Deck 15 aft, along the running track

American Icon Grill

15. Have a Drink at the Bionic Bar

Bionic Bar - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Experience a high-tech bar at the Bionic Bar. Just enter your order on a tablet to get the robot bartender to prepare your drink!

16. Celebrate Your Special Day

Marcos' birthday dinner - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

The trip was very memorable not only because it was my first time to go on a Royal Caribbean cruise, but my birthday also happened to fall on the day while we at sea. Going on a cruise is one of the best ways to celebrate special occasions since you’ll be treated to a feast and lots of fun activities all day.

17. Experience the Shore Excursions

Marcos enjoying Vietnamese Phin Coffee, Hoi An

One of the main benefits of going on a cruise is getting to travel to different places in one trip. You can rest easy in your comfortable stateroom and wake up to a new adventure every day. The cruise itinerary typically alternates days at sea with a day docked at port, during which you can take a shore excursion and go about exploring.

Quantum Of The Seas Overview

The Quantum of the Seas is Royal Caribbean’s showcase ship. Designed to WOW, Quantum of the Seas is on the cutting edge of cruising with features like the North Star, which is a capsule that takes passengers over the edge of the ship 300 feet above the water for 360-degree views of open ocean. Inside the ship passengers have the chance to experience never before seen spaces on a cruise ship, like the Seaplex, which is a multi-use area that will play host to bumper cars and a roller skating rink. Quantum of the Seas ’ Two70 is an expansive lounge that, with the help of digital screens and aerial performers, turns into an interactive performance space at night.

  • Passenger Capacity: 4,180 (double occupancy)
  • Year Built: 2014
  • Last Refurbished:  2019

Royal Caribbean's Ripcord Skydiving Simulator aboard Quantum of the Seas

  • Ripcord by iFLY Royal Caribbean has done it again. They’ve already created ice skating rinks onboard ten of their ships, and have the FlowRider surf simulator that allows you to surf while on the pool deck. Now, you can sky dive on the Quantum of the Seas. The skydiving is simulated and called Ripcord by iFLY. Essentially you gear up and enter a chamber that pushes air up causing you to float and experience the thrill of flying.

Royal Caribbean's North Star aboard Quantum of the Seas

  • North Star The North Star is an innovative feature that’s truly revolutionary. It’s a jewel shaped capsule surrounded by windows that is connected to the ship via an arm that takes the capsule over the edge of the ship. The North Star provides views unlike any other as it allows you to travel over the edge of your ship while sailing through the majestic Atlantic or soothing Caribbean Sea. This experience is not to be missed, and is especially magical at sunset.

Royal Caribbean's Two70 Theater onboard Quantum of the Seas

  • Two70 At the stern of the ship, you’ll find Two70, an inventive space where three decks are transformed into one lounge where the sun shines in through the windowed walls. By day this is a lounge with a gourmet marketplace. It has a library and space for enriching craft classes, demonstrations and lectures. At night the space becomes an entertainment venue with 100-inch LED video screens and aerialists putting on dazzling productions.

Quantum Of The Seas Itineraries

Quantum of the seas review, review of quantum of the seas.

The 2014-built Quantum of the Seas is the first Quantum-class Royal Caribbean vessel, with sisterships Anthem OTS (2015) and Ovation OTS (2016). Similarly designed are the "Quantum-Ultra Class" Spectrum OTS (2019) and Odyssey OTS (2020).

The vessel (IMO number 9549463) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311000267) and registered in Nassau .

Next is shown a Quantum-class ship as looked from above.

History - construction and ownership

Royal Caribbean International (RCI) is a US company, trademarked brand and subsidiary owned by Royal Caribbean Group (RCG/shipowner). RCI was established in 1968 and currently has over 1/5 of the worldwide cruise market. RCI also has RCG's largest fleet by both vessel number and GT tonnage (ship sizes and capacities).

All RCI liners have names ending with "of the Seas".

Royal Caribbean Quantum-class ships - NorthStar

The 4200-passenger ship Quantum OTS is a next-generation Quantum Class ship. The new class of ships was known in the past under the name "Project Sunshine". The Quantum-Class is larger than the earlier Freedom by 13,000 GT. With these new dimensions, the class became the second largest in the fleet of the cruise company after the Oasis class.

Decks and Cabins

Quantum Of The Seas staterooms (2094 total, in 33 grades) include 125 Suites, 1446 Balcony, 148 Oceanview, 375 Inside (including Virtual Balcony) and also 28 Studios (Balcony and Interior). Most cabins are sized 180-200 ft2 / 17-19 m2. Most cabin balconies are sized 55 ft2 / 5 m2. The largest is the Royal Loft Suite (1660 ft2 / 152 m2 plus 620 ft2 / 58 m2 wraparound terrace). Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 22.

The boat has 16 decks , of which 15 passenger-accessible and 9 with cabins.

The new “Royal Suite Class” booking category (suite accommodations only) provides the ship’s highest paying passengers with the ultimate all-inclusive cruise experience of Royal Caribbean, marked by Coastal Kitchen exclusive access, 24-hour personal butler service, included gratuities, all-inclusive drinks, free Internet and thermal suite unlimited access.

Quantum OTS also has RCI's Virtual Balcony Interior cabins (with floor-ceiling 4K UHD screens that receive real-time video streaming from the ship's outside cameras). Compared to the Oasis-class, Quantum-class liners have larger staterooms, more connected cabins (for families with kids) and Studios (designed for solo travelers).

Passengers on Quantum of the Seas are offered plenty of dining options to choose from (25 onboard dining options, of which 14 are complimentary), with multiple choices for light bites as well. Itineraries

Quantum of the Seas itinerary program is based on 4- and 5-day short Asia roundtrip cruises from Shanghai and Hong Kong . During her Inaugural season, Quantum operated on Caribbean voyages out of Bayonne (Cape Liberty) New Jersey.

During winter 2019-2020 (November through April) the Quantum ship was homeported in Singapore for a total of 34 itineraries to Penang Malaysia , Phuket Thailand and Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon Vietnam . This deployment increased the Royal Caribbean's passenger capacity in Singapore by 30%.

Starting on December 1, 2020, the homeported in Singapore Quantum OTS became RCI's ever-first ship in operation since the fleet pause on March 14. The season (later extended through February 2022/14 months) had scheduled only Cruises to Nowhere (2-3-4-night "Ocean Getaways"/roundtrips) available for Singapore residents only and with no call ports along the route. The liner's max passenger capacity (4819) was limited to just 1000.

During summer 2021 (May through September), RCI planned to deploy Quantum OTS in Alaska - joining there the fleetmate Ovation OTS . Both liners were scheduled to operate 7-night roundtrips from homeport Seattle WA (leaving on Mondays). RCI's Alaskan season 2021 also had itineraries planned for Radiance OTS and Serenade OTS - both homeported in Vancouver BC and Seward AK (7-night one-ways). However, in late-January, RCI canceled Quantum's Alaskan 2021 season (April 25 through October 14) and the ship remained in Southeast Asia. Ovation-Serenade-Radiance ships' Alaskan schedules remained unchanged.

Following Ovation OTS , Quantum OTS became the second RCI vessel deployed in Australia (season 2022-2023). Quantum's inaugural Australian season (Nov 1, 2022, thru April 12, 2023) was based on homeporting in Brisbane QLD , and 6- to 10-day roundtrips visiting NSW (Sydney), Tasmania (Hobart), Queensland (Airlie Beach, Yorkeys Knob, Willis Island), South Pacific island ports in New Caledonia and Vanuatu, as well as 2-night/3-day Samplers ( cruises to nowhere ).

In November 2025, Quantum OTS starts homeporting in Los Angeles (joining the fleetmate Navigator OTS ) to operate 3- to 6-day roundtrips to Baja Mexico. Quantum's 2025-2026 season (October 2 through April 21) grouped 11 different itineraries and a total of 44 departures out of LA. Cabo San Lucas is visited for a 2-day/overnight stay.

Quantum Of The Seas Wiki

On February 11, 2011, under “Project Sunshine”, the shipowner RCCL announced the order of a new vessel. It represents a new passenger ship class of all three units, the first of which (Quantum) was delivered in 2014. On February 29, 2012, RCCL announced the order of the second “Sunshine” ship – Anthem (launched in 2015).

On January 31, 2013, the new vessel class was officially named “Quantum Class”. On this day were also officially announced the names of the first two vessels – Quantum and the Anthem OTS. The third vessel of this class (Ovation) was scheduled for launch in April 2016.

Quantum OTS is Royal Caribbean's first Quantum-class vessel, with "WOW" sisterships Anthem of the Seas  (2015) and Ovation of the Seas  (2016). There is a possibility the RCCL cruise company to order a fourth Quantum-class ship, as such an option was included in the contract.

Ship's godmother is Kristin Dawn Chenoweth (1968-bornUS actress and singer). It was delivered to RCI on October 28, 2014. Quantum OTS was initially homeported at Bayonne's Port Cape Liberty (New Jersey) . The Inaugural Cruise (maiden voyage) was on November 2, 2014. The itinerary was a Transatlantic crossing from the UK to USA (Southampton to NYC / Bayonne NJ). In 2016, Quantum was homeported in Shanghai China  for roundtrips to ports in Japan and South Korea,

Quantum OTS refurbishment 2019 review

The ship's first  drydock refurbishment  was in 2019 (October 19 - November 16) done in  Singapore  (at Sembcorp Marine Shipyard). The USD 65 million drydocking project included general maintenance works, technical overhauls, refreshed interiors and new attractions. Deckplan changes include adding two new team gaming experiences - a Laser Tag and an Escape Room.

  • vessel width: 162 ft (49 m), waterline width 136 ft (41 m)
  • virtual balcony's LED screen is 80-inch 4K (ultra high-definition)
  • jogging track length 436 ft (133 m)
  • North Star's height is 300 ft (92 m) and turns every 15 min.
  • SeaPlex' bumper cars are 15
  • On each voyage, the ship is loaded with fresh fruit (25 tons), fresh vegetables (36 tons), fish (10 tons), eggs (79,000), still water (22,200 L), sparkling water (12,000 L).
  • In the vessel's construction were used 37,000 tons of steel, 346 tons of glass. It took 41,600 man hours to build it.
  • Engines/power: two Wartsila diesel (type 12V46F, power output 14400 kW each), two Wartsila diesel (type 16V46F, power output 19200 kW each), two Caterpillar engines (type 3516C HD (power output 2500 kW each)
  • Diesel-electric propulsion: two ABB thrusters (type Azipod XO, power output 20,5 MW each), plus four Brunvoll bow thrusters (type FU115, power output 3500 kW each)
  • A signature feature of the vessel is the top-deck located giant Polar Bear statue (named Felicia).

All Quantum-class liners don't have the top-deck Viking Crown observation lounge and the ice skating rink. There are also differences in the Royal Promenade (shopping mall area). Entertainment options are brand new, with many "firsts at sea" present in the line's brochures.

The list of ship's revolutionary new (WOW) features includes:

  • "virtual balcony cabins" - all the Inside cabins feature a floor-ceiling 80-inch HDTV screen (203-cm) for real-time views (live camera feed showing the passing scenery). All Quantum cabins are ~9% larger than on Oasis-class ships.
  • Bionic Bar (capacity 2 drinks per minute) uses 2 robotic arms to prepare mixed beverages (muddled, stirred, shaken and strained). Those can be ordered via an app (tablets or smartphones). Orders are displayed on large LED screens around the bar. The robotic bartenders use 30 different spirits and 21 mixers (8 sodas, 6 juices, 3 syrups, sugar, mint, limes, lemons).
  • Two70° (located decks 5-7 stern, 3-story-high with a 270° panoramic view) - this lounge includes a cafe, an ice bar, at night it becomes a venue for nouveau-cirque-style production and a disco club.
  • SeaPlex complex (deck 15 mid) - full-size basketball court, a roller-skating sports arena, bumper cars, table tennis, "food truck" (casual dining).
  • "RipCord by iFLY" - it's the RCCL's new skydiving simulator (reservations to be made online prior to sailing).
  • "NorthStar" - the sensational and absolutely complimentary observation tower (forward of the top deck) - a glass-walled capsule on a long rotating arm will lift small groups of passengers over the ship's edge (up to 300ft/91m above sea level).

Quantum Of The Seas Review: Pros, Cons, And Tips

Quantum of the Seas cruise ship in Vancouver

Are you booked on the Quantum of the Seas and seeking a ship review; I’ve got you covered. Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas set the bar for innovation, luxury, and entertainment at sea. It is the flagship of Royal Caribbean’s ground-breaking Quantum class and was launched in 2014.

With its state-of-the-art technology, diverse dining options, and thrilling activities, there’s never a dull moment on this floating oasis. In this blog post, we’ll share our onboard experiences on this incredible ship during our cruise to Alaska.

Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser or a first-time voyager, you will be amazed by the dazzling amenities and dining options.

My wife Karen and I sailed recently from Vancouver to Alaska on the Quantum of the Seas. It was an unforgettable journey enhanced by all the ship had to offer.

This was our 2nd cruise on a Quantum-class ship, as we previously completed a repositioning cruise to Hawaii from Vancouver, BC .

Even though we had a different itinerary and were cruising to the warmer waters of Hawaii, I was so impressed with the Ovation cruise ship that I wanted to try its sister ship, the Quantum of the Seas.

Quantum Of The Seas Overview

The Quantum of the Seas accommodates 4,180 passengers (double occupancy), with a maximum capacity of 4,900. There are 1,500 crew to operate the ship and serve the passengers.

The ship was full during our cruise and had virtually no vacant cabins with over 4,300 passengers onboard. There were over 300 children, which is below average for a Quantum of the Seas sailing.

If you are considering a bucket list cruise to Alaska on the Quantum of the Seas, here are some of the best things to enjoy on board:

RipCord by iFLY : Experience the thrill of skydiving without jumping out of a plane with this indoor skydiving simulator.

FlowRider : Test your surfing skills on this 40-foot-long surf simulator.

Two70 : A multifunctional entertainment venue featuring panoramic windows, transforming into an immersive multimedia experience. The shows are unique and sensational, with six robotic video screens and aerial performances at night.

SeaPlex : The SeaPlex is the largest indoor active space at sea. It offered roller skating, bumper cars, a basketball court, dodgeball, and more.

North Star : This observation capsule takes you 300 feet above sea level, providing breathtaking 360-degree views of the ocean and the ship.

North Star on the Quantum of the Seas

Bionic Bar : Be served by robotic bartenders who mix and serve cocktails based on your custom order.

Solarium : An adults-only retreat with cascading lagoon pools, hot tubs, and a bar, perfect for relaxing and soaking up the sun.

Royal Esplanade : A lively shopping and entertainment district featuring boutiques, bars, and cafes.

Adventure Ocean : If you are traveling with kids, Adventure Ocean provides age-appropriate activities, games, and workshops to keep them entertained throughout the cruise.

What We Liked And Didn’t Like

As with any cruise ship, there are things you like and some you don’t like. It was no different on the Quantum of the Seas during our sail to Alaska.

Remember, this was our experience, and you may encounter a very different scenario. Here are our thoughts, and while some are minor, this will help if you choose Quantum on a future cruise.

  • Staterooms have a tea station. Karen and I love our tea, and a kettle is a big convenience for us.

Our Quantum of the Seas balcony cabin with tea station

  • The cabins are spacious. Our balcony cabin had a trundle bed to easily accommodate four.
  • The Quantum offers 20 venues to get food or beverages. With so many choices, the eating spots never seemed crowded at meal times.
  • Having two indoor pools for a cold destination like Alaska is ideal.
  • There’s so much to do on the Quantum because of amenities like FlowRider, iFly, Northstar, bumper cars, roller skating, and more. So, there’s no room for boredom on a sea day.
  • They put signs on the poolside loungers reminding us not to save space on loungers. This is a problem on many cruise lines, with passengers getting up early to throw towels on loungers for the entire day.
  • Having the Day-of-the-Week signs in each elevator. When traveling, have you ever forgotten what day of the week it was during your vacation? I know some travelers like it that way!
  • We liked the larger balconies. Our balcony had chairs with footstools to lounge and listen to the waves.

Cruise balcony with lounge chairs and footstools

  • At our first port in Ketchikan, Royal Caribbean had all guests meet in the Royal Theater before disembarking the ship. Thousands of people tried to reach one venue in a line that ran along half the ship, resulting in late excursions.
  • Karen has several food allergies, and the restaurant manager repeatedly served her the wrong food. She informed the dining room staff of her allergies before and on the first day of our cruise.
  • The toilet in our cabin had a problem known as “Delayed Flush.” Occasionally it would not flush after use or would flush 5 minutes later after pushing the button multiple times. We called Maintenance, and they did something while we were outside of our cabin. However, the problem persisted.
  • As the ship was full, many events we wanted to book showed as ‘Sold Out’ frequently. It was difficult to get bookings, and some reservations we had disappeared due to problems with the Royal Caribbean app. Plus there was long waits for the bumper cars.

Long wait line at the bumper cars

  • Karen took the Premium North Star Experience at USD 69 per person while sailing into Endicott Arm. It was raining outside, so visibility was poor, but it was made worse by the steamed glass inside the pod.
  • Service on the Quantum was not as good as we experienced on the Ovation of the Seas a year earlier.
  • Two mornings, there was no hot water to take a shower. Cold showers just aren’t our thing, especially in a cold destination.
  • Karen’s app stopped working on day five.

Dining On the Quantum Of The Seas

When reviewing a cruise ship, dining is a huge part of the cruise experience, especially if you’re a foodie. As a mega-ship, many dining options exist on the Quantum of the Seas.

Guests can enjoy many in their cruise fare, but the food and experience are much better if your budget can include one of the specialty restaurants.

The Quantum has four main complimentary restaurants: The Grande and Chic on Deck 3 and Silk and American Icon Grill on Deck 4. The menus are the same each evening across all four rooms.

Many cruise lines have reduced their dining options after the COVID pandemic. The Quantum still had one “classic” – New York Strip Steak – that repeated each night.

Two Maine lobster tails

The Premium Selections were an additional charge for Maine Lobster Tail (USD 16.99), Filet Mignon (USD 19.99), and Surf & Turf (USD 34.99). This was my first time seeing this format on any main dining option.

The advantage is that you can have a ‘Specialty Restaurant’ quality without booking at another restaurant. Specialty dining restaurants fill up fast, with many passengers making reservations before they board the ship.

Windjammer Marketplace is Quantum’s casual buffet on Deck 14 and a great place to eat any time of the day. However, we were surprised when it closed early some evenings at 9 pm.

We used it primarily for breakfast or lunches and loved the self-serve, where we could get exactly what we wanted.

Here are some of the other popular dining venues available on the Quantum that are at no additional cost:

Salads from the Two70 Café

The Café @ Two70 : This café next to the Two70 serves gourmet salads, sandwiches, soups, and more.

Solarium Bistro : A casual spot offering a healthy breakfast and lunch dining venue.

Room Service : We tried room service for breakfast near the end of our cruise. The delivery was on time, and the food arrived hot. However, there’s a delivery charge of USD 7.95.

Coastal Kitchen : Exclusive to Suite guests and Pinnacle Club members. They offer Mediterranean influences and California cuisine.

Sorrento’s Pizza : Hand-tossed, New York-style pizzas with both classic and innovative combinations.

Café Promenade : This is the only 24/7 venue and offers coffee, pastries, sandwiches, and more.

SeaPlex Dog House : Located in the SeaPlex on Deck 16, this fun eatery looks like a food truck at sea. I was impressed they served gluten-free, and the food was very good.

SeaPlex Dog House

Specialty (additional cost) Dining Venues : Four specialty restaurants are available on the Quantum of the Seas. You can save money by booking ahead before embarkation day.

These restaurants fill up quickly, so make your reservations as soon as possible to get the date and time you want. Here’s a full review of dining on the Quantum , including specialty restaurants and menus.

Tip for dining time: Try to get the dining time you want when booking your cruise. Since our cruise sailed at maximum capacity, guests found it impossible to change their dining venue and time.

Quantum Of The Seas Cabin Review

We originally booked an interior stateroom to experience a virtual balcony on our cruise. However, Royal Caribbean invited us to bid for an upgrade through their RoyalUp bid for an upgrade program.

Karen is a “master” at finding cruises at the right price. We won our bid, and received a balcony stateroom on deck 13. While it was under the buffet, we never heard any noise.

Our balcony cabin was contemporary, spacious, and with lots of storage. We were short some hangers, but guest services solved that problem by providing extra.

Quantum balcony stateroom

One of the amenities I like best is the kettle in the cabin. It’s great to be able to make tea without leaving the stateroom.

However, I was surprised that the kettle didn’t come with an assortment of teas, coffee, sugar, or cream. We frequently grabbed extra tea bags and sugar packs from the Windjammer to keep our supplies in the cabin.

Our private balcony was larger than those on competitor lines. In fact, we received two footstools with our lounge chairs so we could recline and listen to the ocean waves.

You can read a full review of our Quantum balcony cabin .

RipCord By iFly

RipCord is a fun adventure and allows you to simulate skydiving at sea. The activity takes about one hour, but you get just one minute of solo flying in the wind tunnel.

With the help of a giant fan blowing wind from underneath at 150 miles per hour (240 kph), you’ll feel light as a feather in the tunnel. I’ve seen kids as young as 3-and-a-half participate, but families of all ages are welcome.

A professional flyer is in the chamber with you all the time. You must watch a safety video first and answer questions about if you have had previous health issues that would prevent you from flying.

Karen doing Ripcord by iFly

Karen tried iFly on our Quantum cruise and had as much fun as the first time on the Ovation of the Seas cruise. Royal Caribbean offered complimentary sessions on port days, and guests had to pay USD 29 on a sea day.

With the ship at maximum capacity, finding an available time slot was hard, so we had to keep trying each day as slots opened up. You need to book using the app, and you can do ONE complimentary and ONE paid session.

Alternatively, you could book a lesson, but these were very expensive.

Tip for doing iFly : If you want to do iFly and want photos or video, you cannot take a smartphone or camera with you. So, have family members book DIFFERENT time slots so you video each other.

The FlowRider surf simulator lets you practice your surfing or boogie-board skills while cruising at 22 knots at sea! Thirty thousand gallons of water per minute move at 30 miles per hour (48 kph) under you.

I have never surfed, so I took the easy lessons laying flat on a boogie board. After a couple of tries, I was on my knees.

Quantum of the Seas FlowRider surf simulator

The FlowRider is a popular area on sea days, and we would watch the surfers try their skills. Many are beginners and fall after a minute.

Watching the pros who can slalom back and forth on the waves and never fall down is impressive. You must meet minimum height requirements of 42 or 48 inches, depending on your chosen activity.

Be sure to sign up on the Royal Caribbean app. There are different times available depending on what level of surfing skill you have. And don’t worry if you’re cruising to Alaska; the water is heated.

Tip doing the FlowRider: Bring a Rashguard top or extra layer for cold weather destinations like Alaska.

Climbing Wall

Adjacent to the iFly, you’ll find an enormous rock climbing wall, offering climbing for all levels of experience. A staff member will help you attach the safety harness; then, you’re free to pick your path.

You don’t need to sign up using the app. Just show up when the ship opens the climbing wall. However, the wall can be closed during strong winds for safety reasons.

Karen standing under the magenta polar bear

Nearby, remember to get your selfie with the giant magenta polar bear.

The North Star is unique to Royal Caribbean and a must-do ride on the Quantum of the Seas. It is bookable through the RC app, but be sure to know if there is a fee for each ride.

The pod takes up to twelve guests and is wheelchair accessible. There are up to 3 contrasting experiences on the North Star:

  • Complimentary Basic Experience – free in port – 12 mins.
  • Extended Experience (at sea) – USD 19 – 15 mins.
  • Premium Experience – USD 69 – 20 mins.

The complimentary ride is usually available in port, and the other paid-for experiences are available at sea. The Premium Experience is available in unique locations near glaciers.

Riding the North Star in Vancouver

They fill up fast since there were limited spaces for the Premium Experience. Karen paid for the Premium Experience as we cruised into Endicott Arm. She got the last timeslot at 6:20 am.

Tip for doing North Star : Book a time slot for the basic experience on embarkation day. Most guests don’t know you need to book by the app, so you’ll have a good chance of finding an opening.

View From North Star In Endicott Arm

Weather plays a big factor in your experience on the North Star. We went on the North Star while docked in Vancouver and visibility was great.

However, due to pouring rain and cold, the conditions in the pod were not ideal in Endicott Arm. The rain pelted the exterior glass making visibility poor, resulting in a bad experience.

Also, the cold outside air caused the glass inside the pod to fog up, making visibility worse. Even after frequently wiping off the condensation, the glass would fog up again.

Ultimately, Karen complained to Guest Services, requesting a refund due to the poor Experience. After much persistence, hassle, and negotiating with the Royal Caribbean agent, they reduced the total fare by 30%.

Riding the North Star in Endicott Arm

Be wary of booking the North Star – Premium Experience in Alaska unless you are sure the weather will be clear. Sunny days in Alaska are often rare!

Two70 on Quantum of the Seas is an innovative venue that combines cutting-edge technology, immersive performances, and stunning ocean views.

The name refers to the 270-degree panoramic views offered by the floor-to-ceiling windows that span three decks at the ship’s aft.

According to Quantum staff, Royal Caribbean built the Two70 venue at the cost of USD 39,000,000, more than the original Royal Caribbean vessels! The six robotic monitors are 8k resolution, and the video system was USD 6 million.

Two70 is one of our favorite areas on Quantum-class ships because of its location, design, and nearby café. I love watching the wake of this massive ship as it cruised to Alaska.

During the day, Two70 serves as a comfortable, modern lounge with ample seating. You can relax, read a book, work, or enjoy the breathtaking ocean views.

Two70 venue on Royal Caribbean's Quantum class vessels

The space transforms into an entertainment venue at night with state-of-the-art lighting, sound, and special effects. However, if you book one of the evening shows through the RCI app, be sure to arrive early.

One of the signature shows during our cruise was “Starwater.” We booked through the app, but our booking disappeared without explanation! When we tried to book again, the show was sold out.

Tip for attending a sold out show in the Two70: Arrive 20 minutes early and join the ‘Stand-by line.’ Many people with bookings don’t show, and the staff let stand-by passengers enter the show 10 minutes before it starts.

Vistarama : includes 18 projectors that create a seamless 100-foot-wide and 20-foot-tall digital canvas on the aft windows. The result is stunning visuals and 3D animations that make a panoramic video format.

Six agile robotic screens move in sync, displaying dynamic visuals and interacting with live performers during shows.

Aerial performers and acrobatics : Talented performers showcase their acrobatic skills, often suspended from the ceiling or performing alongside the Roboscreens. This results in a unique fusion of technology and live entertainment.

Two70 Café : This casual café located within Two70 offers a selection of sandwiches, salads, soups, and desserts, as well as specialty coffee and tea. You can enjoy a light meal or snack while enjoying the ocean views or watching the ongoing performances.

Karen often picks up a healthy snack at the Two70 Café. As she suffers from multiple food allergies, she trusts the serving staff there to know what ingredients are in each item they serve.

The SeaPlex is a multi-purpose venue on Deck 15 at the ship’s forward section. Being totally enclosed, guests can use it during all weather and climates – including Alaska!

The SeaPlex

Most cruise ships have a basketball court, which is usually outside with no covering. The SeaPlex is much better because it is climate-controlled.

During our cruise, Royal Caribbean used the SeaPlex for popular activities such as bumper cars, basketball, pickleball, dodgeball, and roller skating.

These are authentic bumper cars where you drive to collide with your neighbors. It’s great fun for couples and families of all ages.

Karen and I drove the cars twice during our Alaskan cruise. However, they are very popular, and you typically need to join a long line.

There are 15 cars per 3-minute session, but be prepared to wait for your 3 minute ride. We joined the end of the line, and it was 45 minutes before our turn. Even though cars can seat two, most couple rode separate cars.

RCI only offered the bumper cars three times during our seven-day Alaska cruise.

On the second level of the SeaPlex, you can find Play Station, foosball, air hockey, and ping pong tables.

Tip for riding the bumper cars: go on embarkation day when guests are still getting their bearings on the ship. You’ll enjoy the venue with fewer people and you may even get to ride twice.

This state-of-the-art device is a robotic bartender that can mix your favorite drink. The Bionic Bar was the first of its kind at sea when the Quantum-class ships launched.

Quantum of the Seas Bionic Bar

During evenings, it’s a popular hangout with two robotic arms mixing passenger drinks. Karen and I did not try it on our Quantum cruise because I had ordered a “Bahama Mama” drink on our earlier Ovation cruise.

Drinks are the regular drink price of USD 13. If you purchase the Drinks Package, you can use it at the Bionic Bar. However, if you’re a Diamond loyalty member with four drink coupons daily, you cannot use these to get a free drink at this bar.

Even if you don’t drink, watching the mechanical arm in action is amusing.

Solarium And Other Pools

There are four pools on the Quantum, with a nice mix of both indoor and outdoor pools.

Quantum of the Seas pool deck

The indoor pools are great when cruising to Alaska, where temperatures can be very cool during May and September.

The indoor pools were well utilized since we cruised to Alaska in mid-May. Adults can enjoy an outdoor pool in warm weather destinations, and there’s a shallow one for kids too.

One of my favorite pool areas is the Solarium, with tiers of pools and hot tubs with a massive glass ceiling above. However, it is also a popular area, so come early if you want a lounger.

Many passengers prefer the adults-only Solarium. While not family-friendly, it is a great relaxing area, regardless of the weather outside.

We noticed something new on the Quantum of the Seas cruise: bright pink signs on many lounge chairs reminding passengers NOT to save chairs. Passengers saving chairs early in the day is a nuisance on most cruise ships.

Adults-only Solarium pool

I have seen passengers arrive very early in the morning and put a baseball cap and towel on two chairs. The irony is they did not return to the chairs until a few hours later.

For young kids, there is a separate area with its own lifeguard. Known as H20 Zone, it’s a safe pool area with sprays and other amusements to entertain your young ones.

Shopping On The Royal Esplanade

The Royal Esplanade is on Deck 4, the main shopping area aboard the Quantum of the Seas. During sea days, there are sales with many passengers shopping for bargains.

Like on the Ovation of the Seas, I felt like I was shopping at a mall on land and not at sea! Being tourists, we found a great deal of USD 15 each for Royal Caribbean T-Shirts as souvenirs of our cruise.

Guests shopping at the Royal Esplanade

The Royal Theater

Royal Caribbean is renowned for its high-quality production shows at sea. We enjoyed excellent performances each evening cruising on the Quantum of the Seas.

Entertainment ranges from singers, comedians, Broadway-style shows, and more. The Royal Theater spans Decks 3-5 and holds approximately 1,000 people.

It was nearly full most evenings, with an early and later show. For us, the shows add to the overall value of a vacation at sea because they are included in your base fare.

The Oasis-class ships include a large pool so that shows can also consist of aquatic features. We love the shows on Quantum-class ships but look forward to the entertainment on Oasis-class ships on a future cruise.

Bars And Night Clubs

The Music Hall is a large, multi-deck venue for various performances, information sessions, and queueing up for excursions. It seats up to 200 people and is busy throughout the day.

It comes alive in the evening with bands and other acts performing. There’s a ‘country-western’ style, so you will feel like you’re in Nashville, Tennessee.

A dozen other bars and clubs are scattered throughout the ship for your drinking and listening pleasure.

Harp & Horn Pub

The Harp & Horn Pub often featured live music in the evenings, and the Schooner Bar often had a piano player.

On warm days, the North Star Bar allows you to enjoy a drink at the foot of the North Star pod while enjoying pool views.

Health And Fitness On The Quantum Of The Seas

The Vitality At Sea Spa and Fitness Center is well equipped and what I expected. It has the usual services, including thermal loungers, massages, saunas, acupuncture, and much more.

However, it does not offer a jetted tub or pool, which I have enjoyed on other cruise lines. Limited spa services are free, so be prepared to add to your cruise charges.

Some cruise lines offer saunas or steam rooms on specific days as promotions. Fitness and exercise equipment are free unless you want a personal trainer or group fitness classes.

Quantum of the Seas thermal spa

Here’s the cost (at the time of this writing) for various spa treatments:

  • Acupuncture (50 min) – USD 199
  • Fire & Ice Nail Manicure – USD 79
  • Couple Teeth Whitening – USD 358
  • Full leg waxing – USD 85
  • Couples Seaweed Massage – USD 599
  • Pro-Collagen Facial – USD 179

A large running track on Deck 15 is a popular venue in the early morning. If you are on a running program during your cruise, you can continue using the following table:

I used the exercise equipment room several times during our cruise to try to reduce the 5-lb weight gain that happens on cruises. It was an excellent facility with lots of equipment of all types.

I did a combination of cardio and weights, and there was more variety of equipment than at my local fitness center back home.

However, with a full ship, getting a treadmill in early morning was sometimes difficult. Regardless, there was so much equipment that the wait was never more than a couple of minutes.

Royal Caribbean’s Loyalty Program

My wife Karen has good status in RCI’s loyalty program because of the number of times she has sailed on one of their cruise lines. Karen has higher status on Celebrity Cruises, which transfers to Royal Caribbean as both are owned by Royal Caribbean International (RCI).

As a result, Royal Caribbean invited us to attend a private event to recognize all passengers with Platinum status or above. There were over 200 people at the event, primarily a ‘Meet and Greet’ with introductions by several officers.

We were all greeted by the ship’s officers and given a glass of champagne or Mimosa. One of the fascinating segments of the event was recognizing the Top 3 Pinnacle-status passengers.

Enjoying a mimosa at the Top Tier Event on Quantum of the Seas

Pinnacle passengers have accumulated over 700 points, each being a day cruised. The top cruiser was a gentleman out of Florida who had 5,250 points! He had the equivalent of cruising for 14 YEARS with Royal Caribbean! How is that even possible?

Granted, during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was possible to get double points, and as a solo traveler, he also earned double points. It was staggering to think he’s done at least seven sailings on most vessels but a colossal 39 cruises on the Allure of the Seas.

All cruise lines have loyalty programs, and RCI is one of the better programs due to its perks and bonuses. Karen and I try to cruise ALL cruise lines, but if you prefer staying with one you know and like, check out the RCI loyalty program.

Other Services and Amenities

The Quantum of the Seas has the typical services you expect on all cruise ships for your convenience and safety. Here are a few for your information.

Internet access at sea is no longer a ‘nice-to-have’ for many cruisers and families. Royal Caribbean began upgrading its ships in 2022 with Starlink technology developed by SpaceX.

Since our cruise was to U.S. and Canadian ports, we chose a less-expensive option of upgrading our local cell phone plan to include roaming. For about USD 50 USD, Karen and I had internet access during about 75% of our cruise.

However, if you want to be connected 100% of the time during your cruise, Quantum offers two packages – Basic and Surf + Stream.

You purchase per device, and the Basic package is suitable for email, text updates, or staying connected. Most passengers opt for the high-speed Surf + Stream package for video chat, media uploading, etc.

You must get the high-speed package if you are considering working during your cruise with the occasional Zoom meeting. Fellow cruisers told us the Wi-Fi speed was good, and they were happy with the performance.

Pricing is subject to change, but this will give you an idea of what to expect for the Surf + Stream package:

  • Price per device per day -USD 26.99.
  • More than one device – USD 19.99 per device per day.

Royal Caribbean Wi-Fi pricing

You will save on the overall cost if you are a Loyalty member with higher status.

Tip for saving money on Wi-Fi: You can purchase Wi-Fi for one device and share it. Each person must log out to allow the other to use it.

Medical Services

You’ll find medical services on Deck 2 but their hours change throughout the cruise. However, in an emergency, you can get help anytime through one of the house phones.

Note that essential services such as motion sickness medication are no-charge. Although, you can quickly run up a bill if you get injured and require medical attention.

Other than frequent reminders for “Washy-washy” (of your hands) at the Windjammer buffet and hand sanitizer stations scattered everywhere, there were no visible COVID protocols.

If you get COVID during your cruise , you must notify Medical Services, who will advise you on their protocols. Post-pandemic, most cruise lines ask passengers to quarantine in their existing cabins once they test positive for COVID.

Karen sitting in the Wonderland chair

Smoking Areas

There are a couple of smoking areas aboard the Quantum of the Seas. There are covered and open areas but no interior spaces.

You are NOT allowed to smoke on your balcony or in your cabin.

In the past, professional photo-taking appeared to be an essential source of business for cruise ships. However, on the Quantum, there was less pressure to have our picture taken.

I appreciated this because of the constant ‘up-sell’ for services during the cruise. However, there are still frequent opportunities throughout your cruise to have your picture taken.

The Photo Center is on the forward section of Deck 5. On our cruise, the only photo purchased was Karen’s skydiving adventure in iFly at the cost of USD 25.

Final Thoughts

My cruise on the Quantum of the Sea was my 3rd cruise aboard a Royal Caribbean ship. This mega-vessel provided an impressive cruise experience. The more I cruise on RC ships, the more I like the brand.

In 2014, Quantum of the Seas set a new standard for cruising with its innovative features, such as North Star, Two70, iFly, Seaplex, and more.

Our Quantum of the Seas favorite chair

However, our Alaskan cruise on the Quantum of the Seas was not as good as our experience seven months earlier on the Ovation repositioning to Hawaii. To be fair to RCI, the Ovation had only 3,000 passengers compared to our 4,300 on the Quantum.

There were fewer choices in food, and the meals were of lower quality. Also, the overall service was lacking.

There were three instances where the Restaurant Manager served Karen food she was allergic to. While she caught the first two instances, she became sick after eating something she was allergic to the third time.

When cruising at capacity, getting complimentary iFly, North Star, and a booking for the Two70 presentation wasn’t easy. Time slots opened up each evening at 8 pm, so check daily. While there were some issues during our cruise, the pros outweighed the cons.

In closing, we love the Royal Caribbean line and look forward to sailing on the Oasis class soon. The cruise line will launch the larger Icon class in 2024 and set the standard again for cruising.

I hope this review helps you in your research on the Quantum of the Seas. I know you will enjoy it as much as we did!

Can you tell me if there are elevators that are not glass?

Forever Karen

Wednesday 27th of September 2023

Glass elevators tend to be mid-ship around the atrium area. If you prefer not to ride in one, take an elevator at the bow or aft instead.

Thank you so much for your thorough review! My husband and I will be cruising on Quantum this Oct. from Vancouver to Hawaii. Just recently having been on the beautiful Symphony that we loved, I hope we aren't disappointed by Quantum. Unfortunately, the reviews I've read lately haven't been all that favorable. Now, I'm second guessing myself for booking it. We normally cruise on Oasis class ships and have never cruised with 4 consecutive days at sea! Yikes! I hope we don't get bored. Any tips on things to do sea days. We are 65 and even though I'm in good shape, I'm not surfing! Ha!

Jo, the larger ships are great for ocean crossings. You can relax in the Solarium adult-only pool, go to the spa, enjoy the North Star, bumper cars, and more.

Monday 3rd of July 2023

Hello, with being offered the drink package (non alcoholic package) for additional cost. I am still kind of confused as to why we would pay extra for that? If it is available to us (coffee, tea, water) at any of the complimentary cafes or dining? I do understand it is optional. But is it worth it or would I be fine without the upgrade?

While coffee, tea, and select juices are available, the non-alcoholic drink package includes specialty coffees such as lattes, cappuccinos, and mochas. You can also get fresh squeezed juices, soda, and bottled water with the package.

Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas Cabins and Suites

quantum of the seas cruise ship video tour

 Tripsavvy / Linda Garrison

The Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas cruise ship has 2,090 cabins and suites. The categories include 1,571 with balconies, 148 ocean view, 375 inside with virtual balconies, and 34 wheelchair accessible. Families enjoy the 16 family-connected staterooms, while solo travelers love the 12 studio staterooms with balconies or the 12 studio interior ones.

The cabins and suites on the Quantum of the Seas are very similar to her sister ship the Anthem of the Seas .

All of the cabins on the ship have a private bathroom with shower, and some also have a bath tub. All cabins are accessible using the ship's high-tech RFID WOWband wristbands. No more digging in your pocket or bag for the room key; you just hold the wristband in front of the lock and it opens. Nice feature, and it's also used to make purchases on the ship.

Let's take a detailed tour of some of the different cabin and suite categories on the Quantum of the Seas.

Superior Ocean View Cabin with Balcony

The superior ocean view cabins with a balcony on the Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas cruise ship are 198 square feet with a 55 square foot balcony. This cabin is slightly larger than the same category on some of the other ships in the fleet, except for the Anthem of the Seas, which is the Quantum's sister ship. For example, the superior ocean view with balcony on the Oasis of the Seas is 182 square feet, and the same category on the Jewel of the Seas is 189 square feet.

In addition to a private balcony with a great view, the superior ocean view cabins on the Quantum of the Seas  have a sitting and vanity area, private bathroom with shower, and two nice closets that flank each side of the bed.

Interior Cabin

Each of the 375 inside cabins on the Quantum of the Seas have a virtual balcony. What's a virtual balcony? It's a video of the view from the cabin if it had a balcony. This high-definition screen spans nearly floor to ceiling and provides real-time views of the ocean and destinations. The cabin in this photo measures 166 square feet, but some of the interior cabins are larger. The virtual balcony can be seen on the left side of the photo. It provides a real-time look at the same view a balcony would have. In this case, it's a view of the sea, but at other times it would be the port of call.

Ocean View Cabin

Measuring 182 square feet, ocean view cabins are slightly smaller in size than balcony cabins, and have a large window rather than a balcony. The Quantum of the Seas has 148 ocean view cabins.

Superior Ocean View Cabin

The Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas has 8 cabins in category F, superior ocean view. These cabins are larger than other ocean view cabins, measuring 302 square feet. They also feature a large picture window with a spectacular forward-facing view. A lounge chair nearby makes the view even better.

Super Studio Ocean View with Balcony

The 12 cabins in category SB of the Quantum of the Seas are the super studio ocean view with balcony. They measure only 119 square feet, but have a balcony with 55 square feet. These are a new cabin category for Royal Caribbean and are perfect for a solo traveler, although the bed is large enough for two. Solo travelers will not have to pay the single supplement for this category, and the bathroom and bed are the same size as in a standard double cabin.

Sky Loft Suite with Balcony

The Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas has 3 sky loft suites with balcony in category SL. This large suite measures between 673 to 740 square feet, depending on the location. The balcony is 183 square feet and is large enough for a dining area. The suite has space on two decks and great views from the two-deck panoramic window. The lower deck has a seating area, full bath with shower, and dining area. The upper deck is reached via the stairway and has a loft bedroom with king or twin beds and a full bath with shower.

Royal Family Suite with Balcony

The Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas has 4 suites in the royal family suite with balcony, category FS. These family suites sleep up to 8 people, measure 543 square feet, and have a balcony with 259 square feet. The suite has two bedrooms and two full baths, making it perfect for a family group.

Quantum of the Seas Family Junior Suite with Balcony

Smaller family groups of 4 or 5 can enjoy staying in a family junior suite with balcony (category FJ) on the Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas. The ship has 28 of these suites, and they measure 301 square feet, with an 81 square foot balcony. The suite has a separate bedroom with either a king or twin beds, a sitting area with a sofa bed, and both a full bath with a tub and a half bath.

Superior Grand Suite with Balcony

The Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas superior grand suite with balcony sleeps up to 4 and measures 351 square feet, with a 259 square foot balcony. The suite has a separate bedroom, separate dressing area, a full bathroom with tub, and a second entrance that opens to the living room. The sofa in the living room converts to a double bed. The huge balcony wraps around a corner of the deck and has enough room for both a seating area and private outdoor dining.

Owner's Loft Suite with Balcony

There is only one owner's loft suite with balcony, category OL, on the Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas, but it's a gorgeous accommodation. It has 975 square feet spread over 2 decks, with the bedroom and a full bath with shower in the second deck loft. This sleeping deck space also has its own private balcony. On the main first level of the suite is a sitting area with a sofa bed, dining table, and a split full bath with a shower. The two-level panoramic window overlooking the large balcony on the main deck offers great views of the sea.

Spa Junior Suite with Balcony

The spa junior suite with balcony on the Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas measures 267 square feet, with an 81 square foot balcony. The bedroom area has either twin or king bed and the sitting area has a corner settee. The most distinctive feature of this spa suite is the split bath with a soaking tub and large separate shower with frosted glass that allows natural light in from the living area. The toilet and second sink are in a separate half bath.
