Star Trek Online is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by Cryptic Studios and published by Perfect World Entertainment. Released in 2010 for Microsoft Windows and later for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the game allows players to explore the vast Star Trek universe, command their own starships, and engage in both ground and space combat.
Despite some issues, Star Trek Online has managed to maintain a loyal player base and is often regarded as an enjoyable experience for fans of the franchise.
A Familiar Universe with Infinite Possibilities
One of the primary attractions of Star Trek Online is the opportunity for players to immerse themselves in the beloved Star Trek universe. Set approximately 30 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis, the game’s storyline spans across various series and films, allowing players to engage with familiar characters, iconic locations, and even participate in major historical events from the franchise.
The game features several episodic story arcs that are structured like traditional Star Trek episodes, complete with voice-overs from actors who have appeared in the series, such as Leonard Nimoy (Spock), Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine), and Michael Dorn (Worf).
While the game’s narrative is engaging and provides an authentic Star Trek experience, it occasionally suffers from pacing issues and a lack of cohesive storytelling. Nonetheless, the overall experience remains enjoyable for Star Trek fans and newcomers alike.
Star Trek Online’s gameplay can be divided into two main segments: space combat and ground combat. Space combat is undoubtedly the game’s greatest strength, with players able to command their starships in epic battles against various enemies, such as the Borg, Klingons, and Romulans.
The ship customization options are extensive, allowing players to tailor their vessels to their preferred playstyles, whether focusing on firepower, defense, or support roles.
Navigating through space in Star Trek Online is a thrilling experience, with the game’s expansive universe offering plenty of opportunities for exploration and discovery.
The game’s space combat mechanics are deep and rewarding, requiring players to manage their ship’s power distribution, shields, and weapon systems, all while positioning themselves strategically to gain an advantage in battle.
Ground combat, on the other hand, is often criticized for its clunky mechanics and repetitive nature. While improvements have been made over the years, it remains one of the game’s weaker aspects. The third-person shooter gameplay can feel slow and unresponsive at times, with enemies often lacking variety and posing little challenge.
Despite these shortcomings, the game’s ground missions do offer some entertaining moments, particularly when playing with a group of friends or fellow Star Trek fans.
Character Creation and Progression
Star Trek Online offers a high level of character customization, with players able to choose from various Star Trek races, such as humans, Vulcans, and Klingons, or even create their own alien species. The game’s skill system allows for a diverse range of character builds, providing players with the freedom to explore different playstyles and choose between various career paths, such as Tactical, Engineering, or Science Officers.
As players progress through the game, they will earn experience points, skill points, and expertise, which can be spent on improving their character’s abilities and unlocking new skills. Additionally, players can collect and equip various items, such as weapons, armor, and devices, to further customize their character and improve their performance in both space and ground combat.
Graphics and Sound
Considering its age, Star Trek Online’s graphics are somewhat dated. However, the game’s art direction and design capture the essence of the Star Trek universe, providing an immersive experience for fans. The various alien worlds, space stations, and star ships are all rendered with attention to detail, and while the visuals may not be cutting-edge, they still manage to convey a sense of wonder and exploration that is central to the Star Trek experience.
The game’s sound design also plays a significant role in enhancing the overall atmosphere. The voice acting, featuring iconic Star Trek actors, adds an additional layer of authenticity to the experience, making players feel as if they are part of an actual Star Trek episode.
Community and Population
While Star Trek Online’s player base is not as large as other popular MMORPGs, it boasts a dedicated community of fans who are passionate about both the game and the Star Trek universe.
The game has a healthy mix of solo and group content, with the latter being accessible through various in-game tools, such as the Looking for Group (LFG) system, ensuring that players can find others to team up with for challenging missions or large-scale events.
The game also features several social hubs, such as Earth Spacedock and Deep Space Nine, where players can interact, trade items, and participate in various activities together. The community is generally friendly and welcoming, making it easy for new players to find help and advice as they embark on their journey through the Star Trek universe.
Free-to-Play vs. Pay-to-Win
Star Trek Online operates on a free-to-play model, with an optional premium “Lifetime Subscription,” granting access to additional content and perks. The game’s in-game store, known as the “C-Store,” offers a variety of items for purchase, such as ships, costumes, and convenience items. Some pay-to-win elements exist, such as purchasing powerful ships and equipment, but they are not necessary to enjoy the game’s core experience.
Players can also earn a premium currency called “Zen” by participating in the game’s “Dilithium Exchange,” which allows them to trade in-game earned Dilithium for Zen. This system provides a way for dedicated players to access premium content without spending real money, although the exchange rate can be subject to fluctuations based on player-driven supply and demand.
Star Trek Online is a solid MMORPG that provides an engaging experience for fans of the Star Trek franchise. While the game has its flaws, such as dated graphics, lackluster ground combat, and some pay-to-win elements, its space combat, character customization, and vast universe more than make up for these shortcomings.
If you can overlook these issues and are willing to invest time in exploring the game, Star Trek Online is a journey worth embarking on for both Star Trek fans and MMORPG enthusiasts.
Star Trek Online offers a unique and immersive experience for those looking to explore the final frontier. With a wealth of content, a passionate community, and a strong connection to the source material, this game remains an enjoyable option for fans and newcomers alike.

Star Trek: Infinite announced for fall 2023 release on PC and Mac
Paradox Interactive, the famed maker of Europa Universalis , Hearts of Iron , Crusader Kings , and other games in the grand strategy genre, announced today Star Trek: Infinite — a strategy title aiming for a fall 2023 release on PC and MacOS and set in the decades before Star Trek: The Next Generation .
The game’s press release notes players “will run an entire fleet within the Star Trek universe,” and players will “command one of four major powers in the galaxy: the United Federation of Planets, Romulan Star Empire, Cardassian Union, or Klingon Empire.” Each faction has “individualized traits, stories, quests, and more to make their play feel distinct.” The developer promises more information during Captain Picard Day on June 16 .
A short trailer accompanied the announcement and showcased a fleet of Federation ships encountering a Borg Cube. You can check out the official teaser trailer below.
“It is an honor to bring one of entertainment’s most iconic properties to life for our players and Star Trek’s multigenerational fanbase,” said Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive. “We know how much this franchise means to fans all over the world, and we are working closely with Nimble Giant and Paramount Consumer Products to create a faithful and fulfilling game that lives up to their expectations.”
Infinite is developed in collaboration with Nimble Giant Entertainment, a studio based in Argentina and responsible for titles such as 2021’s Hellbound and 2020’s Quantum League and Rocket Arena .

Star Trek Online – Xbox Series X|S Review
Star Trek has had quite the resurrection over the last few years. From Discovery to Picard and even animated shows in between, the new Star Trek Universe that is being built is slowly becoming something quite special.
As a kid I watched the adventures of Captain Jean Luc Picard on Star Trek The Next Generation. I was never the biggest fan of the show, something didn’t quite resonate with me. Perhaps it was the neat bow tied at the end of most episodes, or maybe it was the whole uniformity of the universe that didn’t sit well. Either way, Star Trek was never one of my favourites.
Later when Captain Janeway journeyed to the far reaches of space with Voyager, I started to get into things a bit more. The charismatic Ben Sisko and his giant space station never clicked with me either, I had no idea what it was about a sci fi series (my favourite genre) that I couldn’t adjust to. A little franchise called Star Wars may be to blame; Luke Skywalker and his adventures across the galaxy just sang to me. Now, I hear ya, stereotypical geek talk of Trek Vs Wars, but bear with me.
In 2009 a reboot/alternate reality version of the original Star Trek was unleashed to the world. And I loved it.
Finally I had figured out what was wrong and it allowed me to divide Star Trek into two separate eras – Film Grain Trek and Shiny Lens Flare Trek. This may come across as blasphemy to Trekkies but the shiny Star Trek finally made me fully appreciate the franchise. Silver and gleaming white hallways combined with sleek retro-future looking computer consoles slotted everything in place for me. This look was continued with Star Trek Discovery (another divisive show) and I absolutely loved it. This was a Star Trek I could buy into.
Now while I have gone back and rewatched the Kelvin Trilogy as I was preparing this review, I was also drawn back to another series that again divided fans – Enterprise. Taking things back before Captain Kirk was in diapers really worked for me, and while Captain Archer may have been part of my Film Grain era, I really enjoyed the episodes I watched. Anyway, that’s plenty of groundwork laid down, let’s get down to the main event.
Star Trek Online is a MMORPG that has just celebrated its 13th anniversary. Debuting on PC in 2010, the game made its way over to Xbox on 2016. I initially fired up the game way back when it launched for Xbox and thought it was decent, but short on campaigns. The loading was abysmal and systems were very complicated. Has any of this changed for the recent Xbox Series X|S update? Let’s see.
Right off the bat, there are way more starting points than before. We now get the option of six starting points for our new character, each with a different race or time period to select. Most importantly for me, they have added in the Discovery era. Hopping right in I found the story engaging (pun intended) and the missions short and punchy, not often common for a MMO game. I finished the discovery campaign in a few hours and was sad to see it go. That’s when I knew Star Trek Online had its hooks in me.
For those who have never played Star Trek Online, the game is very welcoming to newcomers. 90% of the content can be played solo, only really requiring groups at the latter stages of the endgame and for PVP. Playing very much like Mass Effect Lite, Star Trek leans heavier into RPG than it does MMO at the start. I would say this is an absolutely great starter MMORPG for those unfamiliar with the genre.
Gameplay, as I said, is very much like the Mass Effect series , conversing with characters from across the Star Trek Universe (many voiced by original actors) to shoot outs planet side. Combat doesn’t have as much of a chunky feel to it and can feel a tad too light and flimsy at points. Taking the battle to the stars, ship combat is an absolute highlight, balancing systems and learning ship positioning. All in, the package (for a free to play title) is well rounded and enjoyable.
So, we need to address the actual upgrade… and I say that lightly. Frame rate is improved across the board, and that means running around Starfleet has never been smoother. Sadly this optimisation is the only true next gen upgrade, and it doesn’t hold a stable 60fps. Graphics may have had a bit of a spit shine but scream more original Mass Effect 1 than the Legendary Edition Remaster . Menus are still laggy for whatever baffling reason, and a lot of patience is required in trying to even apply a new uniform to the crew.
Disappointing upgrade aside, Star Trek Online is still a very easily recommendable title, especially at the whopping cost of free, and no forced microtransactions, as those are mostly cosmetic. Sure, the odd ship may be more powerful than the ones earned or given in-game, there is nothing more significant than a point or two. The various storylines are going to be devoured by Star Trek fans as the cameo appearances and authentic voice acting really put the cherry on top.
An all round fun experience that sadly hasn’t been given the Series X|S boost it deserves, a Shiny Lens Flare look is what would really go down a treat in Star Trek Online. For me, the starships should glisten and the shine in every aspect should be forefront, and sadly the graphics did not receive a huge boost like this. The lack of features brought by the Xbox Series X|S upgrade does not detract from the fun available in Star Trek Online, but you’ll need to look past the 2007 graphical style.
I’ll finish with a direct quote from our review coverage back at Star Trek Online’s Xbox launch in 2016 , as it still remains true to this day.
“ At the end of the day Star Trek Online is a great game. Okay, the ground combat is definitely rough around the edges as well as occasionally annoying with its targeting system. And yes, I did encounter a few bugs that were extremely frustrating, and the visuals will never blow you away. However, it still doesn’t detract from the quality of the experience being offered here. Space combat can be great fun, as well as seeing and hearing about all of the iconic places, characters and sounds from years of Star Trek, and for free, there’s no reason to not jump in.
What are you waiting for captains? Engage!”

Star Trek Online Review
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is back to filming but when can fans expect its return to screens?
S tar Trek: Strange New Worlds is the front and center of the Star Trek universe currently. It's arguably the best show of the Nu Trek era (when it avoids silly ideas like musicals) and has shown itself to be able to craft compelling stories on par with the original. It's truly been a joy to watch the franchise find itself with this new series.
Strange New Worlds is going to have a long delay, however, between seasons. The show was heavily impacted by the writers and actors strike of 2023, causing massive delays to the show's filming. The show's first two seasons debuted in May of 2022 and June of 2023, making a late spring, early-summer release possible. That's not what we're getting, however.
No, the show was set for a five-month filming schedule and apparently started filming in December of 2023. The crew had a bit of a break but are back at it now, but a June 2024 end date is still the goal. That means that the show won't be out this summer, as the past two seasons were. And it's very unlikely the show will make it out this year at all.
With the post-production window oftentimes going into the season, it seems highly unlikely that the show will be done in time for a summer or even a fall release. A holiday 2024 window could exist, as shows tend to do well around that time, but it's also possible that the show is just not out this year at all. The delay will suck, especially considering how the second season ended, but it's what has to happen for the best possible product.
Season two ended with The Gorn making a play on defenseless people and The Enterprise positioned to either help innocent people survive, therefore starting a war, or let them die a horrific death.
