  • Trivia Despite this movie being a sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008) , Josh Hutcherson is the only actor to return from that movie.
  • Goofs (at around 58 mins) After Sean falls from the giant bee and injures his ankle against a log several individuals say he has a "dislocated ankle" and his stepfather and grandfather reset it quickly and easily as you would do with a dislocated shoulder. Although it is possible to "dislocate" your ankle it is not only very difficult to do, but due to the unique, and very stable, make-up of the ankle (unlike the shoulder) it only occurs in conjunction with either a fracture or multiple ruptured tendons of the area. Something that is very serious and extremely painful and definitely not something that could be easily remedied by 'popping it back into place' and then the individual being able to walk about and hike.

Hank : [singing] I see trees of green, red roses too. I see them bloom, for me and for you. And I think to myself: What a wonderful world! I see giant bees, and I could have told ya: Don't trust Alexander - he's older than Yoda. And I think to myself: What a wonderful world! The island that we stand on... Well, it's currently sinking. Sending those secret codes - what the heck were you drinking? But it's all in the past, we wiped the slate clean! We're going to find Nemo's submarine! And you'll think to yourself: What a wonderful world. Oh, yeah...

Summary and Study Guide

First published in 1875, The Mysterious Island is one of Jules Verne’s most popular and enduring works. Set during the years of the American Civil War, it tells the tale of a group of castaways who end up on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, surviving thanks to their ingenuity, skill, determination, and the intermittent help of a mysterious power that appears to benevolently assist them in their times of greatest need. Translated and published in English the very same year as the original French edition, the novel incorporates themes and characters of two other novels by Verne: Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and In Search of the Castaways , both published during the previous decade.

This study guide uses the e-book of the 2001 edition by Random House, translated by Jordan Stump.

In the act of crash-landing, Cyrus is thrown into the sea right before the air balloon hits the shoreline, and the men spend several days searching before he is found a great deal inland. They have no explanation for how he could possibly have ended up in that location, and this proves to be the first of several mysteries they encounter during their time on the island.

The men, who all prove to be extremely resourceful, make the best of their situation. They build a temporary shelter near where they first landed on the island, dubbing it the Chimneys. The men explore large parts of the rest of the island, giving names to many of the geographical features and locations—inspired by the story of the family Robinson, who had done the same—and are quite capable and resourceful colonists. Eventually, they discover a large system of caverns in the granite cliffs on one side of the island, where they make their permanent home, Granite House.

Eventually, they build a canoe, sailing up and down the river. One day, they discover a large chest that seems to have washed ashore, filled with all manner of useful and wonderful tools and supplies that they could not have hoped to manufacture. On another occasion, they even discover the remains of their balloon, rescuing the canvas balloon and all the rigging to use it for clothing, material, and sails on the ship they build.

Once they have built their ship, they use an atlas discovered in the chest to sail to a nearby island that has been marked, where they discover a castaway named Ayrton. Out of his wits and suspicious, Ayrton eventually regains use of his reason and proceeds to live with the men on Lincoln Island (the name they have given their home island). Due to his solitary disposition, he chooses to live at the sheepfold in a house of his own.

Winter comes and goes, but the next spring the company is besieged by pirates who land in the bay near Granite House. In their skirmish with the pirates, Ayrton is captured and Harbert ends up shot and almost dying, but the men nurse him back to health. In one of the most mysterious events on the island, they eventually discover Ayrton deposited back in the sheepfold after a long spell of captivity and, at the same time, the remaining pirates all lined up in the grass, dead. The men vow not to rest until they have discovered the person behind all of these mysteries, but their search proves fruitless.

Returning to Granite House, the men busy themselves with work, spending most of their time building a new and much larger ship since their former ship was destroyed by the pirates. One evening, they are contacted by their mysterious benefactor. Led to a previously undiscovered underwater cavern, they discover Captain Nemo, captain of the Nautilus . He reveals that he was behind all of the mysterious events during their three years on the island, and he has now summoned them because he is on the brink of death. He also reveals to Cyrus that he believes the island is soon going to be destroyed by the activity of the volcano that lies at the heart of the island.

The men fulfill Captain Nemo’s dying wish of sinking the Nautilus below the sea and return to Granite House. They furiously work to finish their ship, but before they can do so, the volcano explodes, destroying the island and their ship in the process. Stranded on the rocks that remain, the men begin to lose any hope of survival, but just in the nick of time, the ship that had once left Ayrton on Tabor Island returns and rescues them. The men return to America and set up a new colony out west in Iowa, living out their days together in community.

journey to the mysterious island plot

Now streaming on:

"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" looks like nothing so much as one of those live-action adventures that Disney used to grind out in the 1950s — and hey, here's Captain Nemo's Nautilus to prove it. Also, a tree house to humble "Swiss Family Robinson," which contains a short-wave radio that has been assembled from old spoons, I think I heard.

The movie is very, very loosely a sequel to " Journey to the Center of the Earth ," with only two connections: It's inspired by a Jules Verne novel, and it co-stars young Josh Hutcherson as the hero Sean. The film opens with him on a motorcycle and being chased by cops, but not to worry; all he did was break into a satellite-tracking station to boost the power on a message for help sent by his grandfather from a lost island in the Pacific.

Sean, whose father in the first film ( Brendan Fraser ) has disappeared (from the cast, anyway), now has to deal with Hank ( Dwayne Johnson , aka the Rock). Hank is his new stepdad. Josh and Hank make friends by decrypting grandfather's message; Hank glances at it and intuits that the two-syllable words stand for dots and one-syllable words stand for dashes, which means Grandpa has had enough free time on his remote island to figure out a way to make Morse code several times longer than it previously was. Unanswered is why grandfather would encrypt a call for help.

This Hank, what a swell guy. He proposes that the two of them fly off to the Pacific and find Grandpa. On arrival somewhere, they hire a tourist helicopter pilot named Gabato, played by Luis Guzman as another one of those low-comedy guys who gets all worked up and is scared of stuff. (I enjoyed a reprise of this classic shot: Gabato runs toward camera, falls on stomach, looks up …and up … and up.)

Gabato has a daughter named Kailani ( Vanessa Hudgens ), a Polynesian beauty who wears a tank top and Daisy Dukes throughout the film. These four fly off in the helicopter, are trapped in a Force Five hurricane that rips it to pieces and are lucky enough to find themselves alive on the beach of the Mysterious Island.

This is your complete island. It has an active volcano; waterfalls with no apparent water sources streaming down cliffs; elephants the size of dogs, and giant lizards that are nowhere big enough to account for the size of their eggs. (Josh falls through the shell of one, splashes in a pool of yolk and is attacked by an unborn lizard chick.) Also on the island is the lost city of Atlantis, even though it's in the wrong ocean, and bees so big Sean and Kailani can both ride on the back of one. And Alexander Anderson, Sean's grandfather, played by Michael Caine , who will not be editing this role into his videos about how to act in movies.

I hope you understand I enjoyed most of this stuff. The director, Brad Peyton , apparently intended it as a genial parody of countless other movies in this spirit. There is, for example, a scene were Sean, Grandpa, Kailani and Gabato all sit around the old campfire and listen while Hank strums a ukulele and sings "What a Wonderful World." And I mean he sings it: every word of three verses. It's not every day you see the Rock channeling Gene Autry.

Sean deduces that Verne's novel contains everything they need to know, and this comes in handy when the volcano explodes, and the island begins to sink into the sea. Sure enough, Captain Nemo's submarine is still hidden underwater. Hank and Sean, trusting Verne, dive off a high cliff, and while holding their breath and swimming underwater, are able to (1) find the sub, (2) open the hatch by tugging and twisting it, (3) swim inside, (4) push a lever to fill it with air, and (5) get the power generator working by jump-starting it with an electric eel.

This is transcendently goofy. It isn't a "good" movie in the usual sense (or most senses), but it is jolly and good-natured, and Michael Caine and Dwayne Johnson are among the most likable of actors. Johnson is such a good sport, he even shows young Sean how to impress girls by flexing your pecs so quickly that nuts will ricochet off them. I can't think of any reason to pay extra for the 3-D.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a 2012 American science fantasy action-adventure film [4] directed by Brad Peyton and produced by Beau Flynn , Tripp Vinson and Charlotte Huggins. A sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008), the film is based on Jules Verne 's The Mysterious Island (1875). It stars Dwayne Johnson , Michael Caine , Josh Hutcherson , Vanessa Hudgens , Luis Guzmán , and Kristin Davis . The storyline was written by Richard Outten , Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, and the screenplay by Brian and Mark Gunn.

Theatrical release

Critical response, external links.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was released in cinemas on February 10, 2012, by Warner Bros. Pictures , New Line Cinema and Walden Media to mixed reviews, but was a box office success with a worldwide gross of $335 million, surpassing its predecessor. [3] It was released on DVD/Blu-ray on June 5, 2012.

Four years after his adventure in the center of the earth , 17-year-old Sean Anderson is arrested by the police for breaking into a satellite control center in hopes of enhancing a coded signal that could have been sent by his long-missing grandfather, Alexander Anderson.

Wanting to bond with Sean, his new stepfather Hank Parsons helps decipher the code, which leads to three books: Treasure Island , Gulliver's Travels , and Jules Verne 's Mysterious Island . Using the books' individual maps, Hank uses a backlight to make them a single island, complete with the coordinates to its location. Hoping to prove to Sean that there is no mysterious island there, Hank convinces Sean's mother, Liz, to let him take Sean to where the coordinates point to.

In Palau , Hank reluctantly hires helicopter tourism guide Gabato and his daughter Kailani (on whom Sean develops an immediate crush) to fly to the coordinates, as they are the only ones willing to take them. The helicopter gets caught in a cyclone and they crash into the Pacific, waking up on the island.

Moving in land, they are shocked to discover miniature elephants (which belong to a prehistoric species, the Dwarf sicilian elephant ) and giant butterflies, meaning the animal sizes are opposite. After coming across an egg clutch, Gabato accidentally wakes up a giant frilled lizard , which chases them throughout the jungle.

They nearly get eaten, but are saved by Alexander. He takes them to a hut he built from the wreckage of the ship that brought him to the island. He has a working radio, but due to the positioning of the satellite, it will be two weeks before they can call out.

The next morning, Alexander leads the group to the lost city of Atlantis , which rises every 70 years and sinks again after a couple of days. Although Alexander assures them the island won't sink for many years, Hank discovers sea water coming from underground, meaning they only have days before the island sinks. Their only means of salvation seems to be the legendary Nautilus , Captain Nemo 's submarine. Kailani enters Nemo's crypt and finds his journal, which shows that Nautilus is in a cave at Poseidon 's Cliffs.

To go there, they mount giant bees and fly over a high ridge. When giant bee-eater birds try to devour them, Sean saves Kailani's life, but dislocates his ankle. Hank and Alexander reset Sean's ankle, then the group has a bonding moment when Hank sings his rendition of " What a Wonderful World " to ease Sean's pain.

The next morning, the water rises greatly and Hank deduces that the island will sink in a matter of hours. Gabato is missing, having gone toward the island's volcano in search of gold. While Alexander and Kailani go after him, Sean and Hank head for Poseidon's Cliffs.

To reach Nautilus ' underwater cave, Sean and Hank create makeshift oxygen tanks and dive down fifty feet, but are nearly killed by a giant electric moray eel . The 140-year-old batteries have run down, so they engineer a way to start the submarine with the eel's electricity.

Kailani and Alexander find Gabato and convince him to escape with them instead of trying to take some volcano gold. As they near Poseidon's Cliffs, the volcano erupts. Sean and Hank arrive in Nautilus just in time to rescue the others from the water. Gabato pilots the submarine out of harm's way while Hank and Sean fire torpedoes into the path of falling debris. As they clear the dangers, Kailani kisses Sean for his bravery.

Six months later, Kailani and Gabato are well off, as he runs the most popular tourist attraction on Palau   – tours aboard the Nautilus . Kailani visits Sean on his birthday. While the family celebrates, Alexander arrives with a book for Sean's birthday present   – Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon , Alexander's suggestion for the next new adventure with the family. Liz protests, but Hank says, "Oh honey, it's only the moon. What could possibly go wrong?" The film ends with the camera panning to the moon.

After the commercial success of the first film, New Line Cinema and Walden Media purchased Richard Outten 's spec script, Mysterious Travels , in March 2009 to serve as the basis for the film. In the story, the characters embark on a journey to a mysterious uncharted island thought to have inspired the writing of three literary classics: Robert Louis Stevenson 's Treasure Island , Jonathan Swift 's Gulliver's Travels , and Jules Verne 's Mysterious Island . Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn were chosen to revise Outten's script. Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema announced that Journey 2: The Mysterious Island would be released on February 10, 2012.

Josh Hutcherson was the only actor to reprise his role. Due to scheduling issues, Brendan Fraser and Anita Briem did not return. Kristin Davis replaced Jane Wheeler as Sean's mother Liz. Dwayne Johnson played Sean's stepfather, who is forced to accompany Sean on the trip to find his missing grandfather Alexander (played by Michael Caine ) on a mythical and monstrous island. [5] Vanessa Hudgens was cast as Hutcherson's love interest, Kailani.

The theatrical release of the film was preceded by a Looney Tunes short film titled Daffy's Rhapsody , featuring Daffy Duck and Elmer Fudd in the first CG or 3-D depiction of these specific Looney Tunes characters. The short film's director, Matthew O'Callaghan, noted that " Daffy Rhapsody was originally recorded in the early 1950s as part of a kids' album". Unlike the earlier CG Looney Tunes shorts that appeared before Happy Feet Two and Yogi Bear , this short did not appear on the home video release of the film it accompanied.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was released in cinemas on February 10, 2012, by Warner Bros. Pictures , Walden Media and New Line Cinema . The film was accompanied by a 3D Looney Tunes short titled Daffy's Rhapsody . The short was originally going to play before Happy Feet Two , but was replaced with I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat to go along with the bird theme.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was released on DVD/Blu-ray on June 5, 2012.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island grossed $103.9 million in North America and $231.4 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $335.3 million, against a production budget of $79 million [6] surpassing its predecessor . [7] [8] In North America, the film earned a $6.54 million on its debut Friday, ranking fourth at the box office. [9] Over the weekend, it earned $27.3 million, coming in third place, much higher than the original's $21.0 million debut. [10] Outside North America, Journey 2 began its run three weeks before its North American release. [11] It topped the box office outside North America for two consecutive weekends [12] and three in total. [13] It surpassed the original's total outside North America. [14] Its highest-grossing region after North America was China ($58.4 million), [15] followed by Russia and the CIS ($17.6 million) and Mexico ($12.7 million). [16]

On Rotten Tomatoes , the film has an approval percentage of 45% based on 133 reviews and an average rating of 5.00 out of 10. The critics consensus states: "Aggressively unambitious, Journey 2 might thrill tween viewers, but most others will find it too intense for young audiences and too cartoonishly dull for adults." [17] On Metacritic , the film has a score of 41 out of 100 based on 27 critic reviews, indicating "mixed or average". [18] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A−" on an A+ to F scale. [19]

Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly gave the film a B grade, stating that "the movie flies by pleasantly, and is then instantly forgettable. Perhaps Jules Verne can explain the science of that". [ citation needed ] Randy Cordova from the Arizona Republic said: "Johnson can't save the movie, directed by Brad Peyton, from being a sloppy skip from one seemingly unrelated idea to the next". [ citation needed ] Roger Ebert , who gave the first film two stars, gave the sequel two-and-a-half stars, stating: "It isn't a "good" movie in the usual sense (or most senses), but it is jolly and goodnatured, and Michael Caine and Dwayne Johnson are among the most likable of actors". In August 2014, Carey Hayes and Chad Hayes were announced to write the script for a third film. [21] Brad Peyton and Dwayne Johnson were expected to direct and star in the sequel, respectively. [22] It was later stated that there would be two sequels. [23] By January 2018 however, Johnson stated despite the financial success of The Mysterious Island , and although a third film titled Journey 3: from the Earth to the Moon (based on the 1865 novel ) was intended, its development had been cancelled due to a lack of immediate interest and troubles in adequately adapting the novel. [24] Despite this, reports from Hollywood production insiders arose in August 2020, stating that a sequel was once again in development. In December 2021, Hiram Garcia confirmed that Warner Bros. Pictures wants a sequel film, though Seven Bucks Productions decided to delay development in favor of pursuing other projects. [25]

Movie Review

It’s not that Sean hates his stepdad, Hank.

He’s no little kid anymore, though. And he doesn’t need some new “rent” hovering over him, trying to get into his business. He’s a teenager now and can take care of himself.

Still, it was kind of fun that Hank knew so much about code-breaking from his Navy days. Together they were able to decode that puzzling message from his long-lost grandfather. And they even figured out the clues about the classic novels—Jules Verne’s The Mysterious Island, Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels and Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island —how they all fit together and were really about the same island.

It was really cool that Hank agreed to help him hunt down the map coordinates they found and head off on an adventure to find that secret island. They might even find Sean’s grandfather in the process! Maybe he needs to give Hank a bit more credit for trying to be a pretty good dad after all.

How many guys would shell out the kind of bank required to take this trip and hire a helicopter to check out a set of coordinates out in the middle of the Pacific? Not many. That’s definitely something in Hank’s favor.

The trip even gave Sean the chance to meet Kailani, the helicopter guy’s daughter. And boy is she cute! She’s not really giving Sean the time of day yet, but, oh well. All in all it’s been an incredible couple of days so far. And, well, Sean figures he might actually owe it all to Hank.

Sean would probably almost be ready to, kind of, tell Hank how he felt about him now … if that funnel cloud hadn’t disabled their helicopter and they weren’t crashing into the ocean. Isn’t it funny how life flashes before your eyes and things get so clear just before you’re about to croak?

Positive Elements

Hank does indeed do his best to make a connection with his standoffish stepson. And as the movie progresses, the two take great strides toward a true father/son bond. Hank talks of his own dad abandoning him when he was 8. And he makes it crystal clear that he isn’t going anywhere. As unexpectedly crazy as their adventure becomes, Hank always comes back to trying to protect Sean and make wise choices.

When Hank gives Sean a little advice about the opposite sex, his speech includes some wisdom about being sensitive and curbing a teen’s natural instincts—along with just a dash of silliness about “pec popping,” which could actually be construed, in a bit of a roundabout way, as a hedge against getting too serious too fast.

Hank’s sense of parental commitment even impacts Sean’s grandfather, Alexander, whom they do meet in the middle of their journey. Alexander had, in a way, abandoned his family in the pursuit of his research. And eventually the old scientist realizes that it’s not too late to reconnect and have the same kind of rewarding relationships that Hank is forming with Sean.

The helicopter owner, Gabato, becomes part of the adventuring crew after the crash. And we learn of his love and devotion for his daughter. He longs to send her to college to give her a better life, and he puts his own life on the line to try to dig up a large chunk of island gold to make that possible. Kailani voices her love for her dad, but tells him, “We’ll have all the wealth we need—as long as we’re together.” On several occasions, Sean makes brave choices to protect Kailani from island threats.

Spiritual Elements

When Gabato first sees the beauty of the island, he coos, “If this is heaven, I’m checking in.” When he finds the gold, he exclaims, “My prayers have been answered.”

Sexual Content

Kailani wears a figure-fitting, midriff-baring and cleavage-revealing outfit of shorts and a tank top. Sean immediately takes notice of her. And, later, they share a brief kiss. Sean’s mom sports a little cleavage too.

Violent Content

The island has a special “what is normally small grows large” property about it. And so there are several chase scenes involving giant birds, a king-sized lizard and an enormous electric eel. The result is several slo-mo images of upclose chomping mouths and barely missing snapping beaks. The birds and the lizard are all eventually knocked out cold (with the birds flying into other objects and the lizard getting thumped by rope-suspended logs). An enormous spider and some oversized centipedes are a little frightening-looking, but never a real threat.

During one chase Sean falls and dislocates his ankle. A ravaging funnel cloud snaps the tail of Gabato’s helicopter, sending it and everyone aboard plummeting to the ocean below. (The humans all survive. The helicopter, not so much.) When the mysterious island starts sinking, the land shakes, volcanoes erupt and mayhem ensues. Alexander, Gabato and Kailani fall into the churning sea and are moments away from drowning when Hank and Sean come to the rescue.

Crude or Profane Language

Two uses of “heck” and one “crap.”

Drug and Alcohol Content

Questioning someone’s poor choice, Hank wonders aloud what they were drinking.

Other Negative Elements

We see Sean riding his dirt bike to elude the police after he reportedly broke into a satellite facility. Comic relief guy Gabato delivers several light poop and body odor jokes. Hank tries to scare off a giant lizard with a lit road flare: When the creature bites the top off the flare, Hank looks at it and eeps out, “That’s emasculating.”

A sequel to 2008’s Journey to the Center of the Earth , this film takes the same “what if?” premise of the original (What if Jules Verne’s books weren’t fabrications of the author’s imagination, but a record of his scientific discoveries?) and expands on it nicely.

New cast additions add some heft and chuckles. The mysterious island itself has lots of color and pizzazz. And the ride-a-giant-bee-and-pick-up-a-teeny-elephant contrariness of that secret place makes the journey all the more crazy and fun. Plus, the snippets of clues from classic novels make you want to explore your local library shelves.

Then add in the fact that the filmmakers go to great lengths to explore the value of strong family bonds and lasting parental commitment—while the gang is running from the mayhem of giant birds and torrential flood waters—and you’ve got a light family adventure with a fair amount going for it.

During the press screening I attended, a particularly frenetic—but not too scary—chase sequence had just taken place. We were all sitting back from the edge of our collective seats as a character onscreen asked, “Everyone all right?” And out of the audience, a small, sincere and youthful voice piped up with, “I’m OK.”

The adults in the audience chuckled, but that little moment drove the real charm of this pic home to me. This is the kind of movie that will draw in its audience with an exciting ride and a heartwarming message while making sure that even the youngest in the family feels safe and secure. And if you ask me, that’s pretty “OK” indeed.

Journey 2: Mysterious Island

Journey 2 reveals the mysterious allure of islands

Jules Verne's works have much to offer the makers of CGI-prone, 3D-disposed kids' adventure flicks. The 2008 version of Journey to the Centre of the Earth did well enough at the box office, so a sequel was obligatory. We could have had Captain Nemo's submarine odyssey, the exploration of Africa from a balloon or a voyage to the moon by cannon-fired projectile. Instead, we get a trip to an island.

Even in Verne's day, this was considered a bit of a let-down. The author's publisher rejected the first version of what was to become The Mysterious Island with the reproach: "Where is the science?" To beef things up a bit, Verne got his adventurers blown off course while escaping from a war zone by balloon. Less thrillingly, the heroes of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island travel instead by downmarket tourist chopper.

Still, their destination is an island, and islands enjoy a special place in the human imagination. Those who can, including Marlon Brando, John Wayne and Mel Gibson, have insisted on actually owning one. Tiberius preferred to rule the Roman empire from Capri, while to create Nineteen Eighty-Four , Orwell felt obliged to maroon himself on Jura. A poet called Kimon Friar lived on 46 different islands ; a decorator called Andy Strangeway has slept on 162 ; a conservationist called Philip Conkling has visited a thousand .

The allure prompting such behaviour infected cinema from its beginnings. The first big-screen version of Verne's The Mysterious Island appeared in 1929, though the 1961 stop-motion animation is better remembered and the little-known Soviet version has its admirers. Island settings have sustained films as different as Jaws, South Pacific, The Wicker Man, Dr No and Il Postino, or more recently Mamma Mia!, Shutter Island and Archipelago.

Our preoccupation with islands goes back to classical times, while since the middle ages, both paradises and hell-holes have typically been envisaged on islands. This year, the BBC celebrates the 70th anniversary of its longest-running programme, Desert Island Discs , and Danny Boyle presents his Olympian extravaganza , entitled, fittingly enough, Isles of Wonder.

The role of islands in the human psyche has been much pondered , but the artefacts that they've inspired offer clues enough. Works such as The Tempest, Utopia, Gulliver's Travels, Robinson Crusoe, Treasure Island and Lord of the Flies may seem very different, but they utilise the same obvious but distinct features of isolation.

Islands are necessarily extrinsic; but, unlike deserts, forests or mountain ranges, they're also peculiarly finite. This makes them theatres in which alternative worlds can readily take the stage.

Evolution makes this happen automatically, as Darwin discovered in the Galapagos . Journey 2: The Mysterious Island relies on Foster's rule , which asserts that island life-forms may get larger if cut off from predators or smaller if denied mainland nutrients. That's why Michael Caine is subjected to the indignity of having to ride on a giant bee. However, as in so many island fictions, human character also evolves.

Islands provide distance from familiar ways of thinking and invite or require reassessments. Visits to them, real or imaginary, can be as conceptually disruptive as any sojourn in the contrived landscapes of science fiction. They enable us, as one writer has it, "to know ourselves as distinct from those around us, and, in so doing, forge a more articulated relationship with the world" . So it is, sort of, in Journey 2.

The film's protagonists are peculiarly unappealing. As romantic leads, Josh Hutcherson and Vanessa Hudgens are both vacuous and unpleasant. Luis Guzmán is drearily gross and The Rock seems to have wandered in from another movie. The quartet's adventures are mechanically predictable. When we reach the bog-standard redemptive climax to which they're subjected, we might weep with weariness, but for one thing. It's that island locale. This makes the whole thing somehow work.

Journey 2 is based on the idea that Verne, Stevenson and Swift's books were rooted in fact; that they were prompted by rumours of an uncharted island that does actually exist . The film ends up by reminding us that just such an enchanted isle is indeed real enough. It lies, however, not in the wide ocean's stormy embrace, but amid the boundless seas of the human soul.

A 2012 sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008) , directed by Brad Peyton, starring Dwayne Johnson , and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The story is a very loose adaptation of Verne's The Mysterious Island .

Four years after the previous movie, the now seventeen-year-old Sean ( Josh Hutcherson ) is fixated on finding his long-lost grandfather ( Michael Caine ), and, driven by the first film's revelation that Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth was a factual account, believes he has found the key to discovering him: by overlaying the island maps in Gulliver's Travels , Treasure Island and The Mysterious Island , he creates a map of a new island, complete with coordinates. Heading to the western Pacific to seek out the island, Sean and his stepfather Hank (Johnson) secure a helicopter for their search but are caught in a storm and crash on their destination, a lost land of dwarf elephants, giant butterflies and huge, aggressive lizards — and also, incidentally, the home of the lost city Atlantis. They discover that the island submerges and reemerges on a regular cycle, and, when they realize that it will soon vanish back into the sea, they set out on a frantic search for their only way off — the Nautilus , Captain Nemo's legendary submarine.

This movie contains examples of:

  • Artifact Title : A mild case. The title would have made more sense if they had left off the "Journey 2" part, but there is technically a journey (just not to the center of the earth and it's not particularly long as they spend most of the movie trying to get off The Mysterious Island ).
  • Atlantis : The lost city is located on the island. They also reference the fact the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea had Atlantis under the ocean.
  • Big Damn Kiss : Between Sean and Kailani in the movie's climax.
  • Canon Welding : This movie makes at least the settings of Journey To The Center of The Earth , 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea , and The Mysterious Island equally real in-universe, as well as parts of Treasure Island and Gulliver's Travels .
  • Alexander brings up the Vernians in the opening narration and is established as the original Vernian in the Anderson family.
  • Sean's wall displays articles referencing him and his uncle's expedition from the previous film.
  • Alexander references Max's death in the last film.
  • Death by Materialism : Narrowly averted with Gabato, who nearly dies trying to dig up a giant lump of gold. He isn’t motivated by greed, however. He just wants to give his daughter a better life and a good education.
  • Disappeared Dad : Hank’s father ran out on him when he was a small boy. As a result , Hank is determined to be the best stepfather he can possibly be to Sean.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul" : Henry... er, Hank. Actually, it's not made clear if Henry really is Hank's name, or if Hank isn't really a nickname, but all the same, Hank doesn't like being called Henry.
  • Fanservice : Vanessa Hudgens wearing a tank top and short shorts for almost the entire movie. Also, did any male viewers who saw it in 3D regret paying extra in the scene where she crawls out of a collapsing tunnel with the camera on her from behind ? Thought not.
  • Hank is a genuinely caring person, and does worry about Sean. But, the way he insults Sean's grandfather, in front of Sean , is just a tad mean-spirited. He gets better though.
  • Alexander, for mainly the same reasons. He and Hank pretty much take turns insulting and undermining each other for the first half of the movie before beginning to respect each other.
  • Practically the moment Kailani appears, in a tank top, the camera goes straight to her breasts.
  • As mentioned above, when Kailani is crawling out of the cave, the camera is focused on her butt.
  • Oh, Crap! : When Hank attempts to punch the giant lizard. Hank: I think I just made it worse.
  • Ominous Crack : The giant lizard egg that starts cracking under Gabato's weight.
  • Psycho Electric Eel : A very big nippy one in the sea cave where the Nautilus is hidden.
  • Remember the New Guy? : Alexander Anderson was never mentioned in the previous film, despite this film implying he was the one who get Max into Verne. Handwaved by the film noting that he was never around.

  • The Stinger : A mid-credits scene reveals that three small elephants survived the submerging of Atlantis, and they are seen swimming underwater towards that city. Indicating that the flora and fauna of the island have evolved to survive the islands cyclists submerging.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes? : Hank really doesn't like lizards and is freaked out by the overgrown one the group runs into on the island. "Why did it have to be lizards? Why couldn't it be snakes? "

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island Review

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

03 Feb 2012

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

At one point in awful ’70s disaster movie The Swarm, reacting to the news that buzzy insects have managed to down two military helicopters, Michael Caine turns solemnly towards a co-star and utters the immortal words, “I never dreamed it would turn out to be the bees. They’ve always been our friend.” It seemed certain that this would be the weirdest bee-based scene Caine would ever have to perform. But now along comes Journey 2, boasting an aerial chase in which the knighted actor – yes – rides a giant version of his ancient foes.

Happily, unlike The Swarm, this affable adventure is in on the joke. Directed by Brad Peyton, the man behind Cats & Dogs: The Revenge Of Kitty Galore, and so clearly Hollywood’s go-to guy for very silly sequels, Journey 2 gleefully piles on the implausibilities. So we get a comedy double-act between Caine and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson — as effectively bizarre a match-up as Arnie and DeVito — which sees them antagonistically call each other “Mary Poppins” and “Sasquatch”. A campfire sing-along recapping the movie’s plot to the tune of What A Wonderful World. And at least three moments in which Johnson reveals himself to be an expert in the exact puzzle they’re facing. Including, rather brilliantly, soil liquefaction.

It’s no-one’s definition of great cinema, but when a scene that starts with Johnson offering courting advice to his stepson degenerates into everyone bouncing berries off his chest, it’s tough not to smile. Inevitably, the on-message plot stuff is less fun. The one holdover from Journey To The Center Of The Earth — Brendan Fraser’s character barely gets a mention, but it’s implied he’s bailed on his nephew — Josh Hutcherson remains a fairly unengaging screen presence, though he’s not helped by having to constantly sulk at Johnson, one of the world’s most engaging stars. And the various character arcs (will the heroic boy and hot girl hook up? Will doofus helicopter pilot Luis Guzmán find some way to pay his daughter’s college fees?) won’t keep anyone on the edge of their seat.

So don’t expect Avatar (though there are giant lizards), rather a mild adventure that makes no sense at all but is eccentric enough to win through on charm. Not every big-budget fantasy, after all, sees the hero ball his fist and threaten to unleash the “thunder-cookie”…

Screen Rant

'journey 2: the mysterious island' review.

On the whole, Journey 2 is just a fun ride from beginning to end.

On the whole,  Journey 2  is just a fun ride from beginning to end.

In this sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D , we catch up with young Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson), now a bit older and getting into all kinds of mischief. Sean's mom (Kristin Davis) and step-dad Hank (Dwayne Johnson) try to pry the reason for his bad behavior out of the recalcitrant teen, and Hank finally manages to get the answer: Sean is trying to piece together the mystery of his missing grandfather, Alexander Anderson (Michael Caine), who went searching for a mysterious island of legend.

Working together, Sean and Hank decode a message from Alexander based on the famous adventure tales of Jules Verne, Robert Lewis Stevenson and Jonathan Swift. Sean immediately sets his sights on the island of Palau, the next step to locating his grandfather, and Hank - trying to bond with the boy and/or exhaust his curiosity - decides to chaperone the journey.

In Palau, Hank and Sean meet Helicopter tour guide Gabato (Luis Guzmán) and his daughter Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens) - who is pretty enough to make Sean risk a flight on her rusted copter into the eye of a hurricane that just so happens to hide the entrance to the mysterious island. Once they are (crash-)landed on the island, the party sets out to find Alexander - and then, find passage off of the mystical land mass before it sinks back into the sea, taking them with it.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island  is one of those "good for what it is" films - and what it is, is a light-hearted, family-friendly adventure film in the vein of  Goonies  or  Honey I Shrunk the Kids  (only not that good). The film is filled with cheesy dialogue and jokes, one-dimensional characters and an overdone plot that offers just a few notes of genuine heart or drama - but none of that really matters in this context. Kids will have fun with the material, and the adults accompanying them will be reasonably entertained as well.

Director Brad Peyton ( Cats & Dogs 2 ) crafts a suitable visual experience via some nice tropical locales and striking (but obvious) green-screen and CGI effects. Journey 2  is not likely to win any technical awards - but again, in the context of a kids' film, the visuals are sufficient. The 3D certainly adds to the fun - though it's more often than not used in that pop-out, 'in-your-face' manner meant to capture the fleeting attention of youngsters. But, to be fair, any movie that spends time showcasing The Rock bouncing CGI berries off of his pecs is just out to have a good time, rather than impress with its technical prowess.

Of course, all the silliness would be too much if not for the cast of actors who manage to ground it, and Dwayne Johnson and Michael Caine are two of the main reasons why this film works as effectively as it does. Both are great leading men in their own right, and the contentious relationship between Hank and Alexander (as Sean's competing paternal figures) creates some great banter, which are probably the movie's best moments.

Josh Hutcherson has become something of a bigger name since his first  Journey  film, but he does a good job holding the screen and potraying a somewhat layered protagonist - good qualities in a young lead. Hutcherson's chemistry with Johnson is also strong, and certain moments between Sean and Hank even manage to be somewhat moving as the film progresses.

Hudgens doesn't offer much except her pretty face (not that she's required to) and Guzmán gets the task of playing the irritating comic relief character - which he is certainly successful(?) in doing.

On the whole,  Journey 2  is just a fun ride from beginning to end. It's not a piece of classic cinema by any means, but between some great set pieces, a healthy mix of non-threatening action, (chessy) kid-friendly comedy, and some likable leading performers, you can easily set this Journey above the one that proceeded it.

BONUS: Journey 2 also includes a new 3D CGI Looney Tunes short featuring Daffy Duck and Elmer Fudd. It's a different look for Looney Tunes, featuring some new voices behind the iconic characters and a spastic, hyper-kinetic pace - but the young'uns should enjoy. Although, it is a little unsettling to end an animated short on an image of a 3D shotgun pointed in the face of a young audience. But I digress.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island  is now playing in 2D and 3D theaters.

What this new trailer does have is Dwayne Johnson riding a giant bee. The trailer is preceded by an uncomfortable intro by Johnson and star Josh Hutcherson that’s saved by the duo’s charm and some pec flexing by the former.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Michael Caine, Luis Guzman , and Vanessa Hudgens . Journey 2: The Mysterious Island opens in 3D February 10th.

I signed up to get Screen It weekly reviews a long time ago, when my kids were young and I wanted to know more about movies before we went to a theater or rented. Now one child is in law school, other in undergraduate, and I still read the weekly Screen Its! It helps me know what my husband and I want to see or rent, and what to have waiting at home that we all will enjoy when my "kids" come home. I depend on Screen It reviews. They usually just present the facts and let me decide if the movie is appropriate or of interest for my family and me. Thank you for providing that service, Screen It! Patti Petree Winston Salem, NC
I have 4 children who are now in college. I signed up for Screen It when my children were pre-teenagers. Often my children would ask to see a movie with a friend and I wished I could preview the movie prior to giving permission. A friend told me about ScreenIt.com and I found it to be the next best thing to previewing a movie. The amount of violence, sexual content, or language were always concerns for me and my husband as we raised innocent kids with morals. We constantly fought the peer pressure our kids received to see films that in our opinion were questionable. With the evidence we received at Screen It, our kids couldn't even fight us when we felt a film may have been inappropriate for them to watch. Thank you, Screen It. Dwayne Johnson admires his tiny elephant trunk in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island .

I didn't see 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth but considering the cast changes and the simplicity of the plot, I don't exactly think I missed out because of it. Gone is Brendan Fraser and Jane Wheeler as Sean's parents and instead Dwayne the Rock Johnson is now playing his step-father while his mother has been re-cast with Kristin Davis now playing the small, generic and thankless part of his mother.

When Sean, now in high school, receives a mysterious signal from his grandfather, he and Hank (Johnson) head off to Palau, near where they've determined the signal is coming from. Sean is convinced that the signal will lead them to Jules Verne's mysterious island. Hank just hopes to bond with his step-son. They hire Gabato (Guzman) and his daughter Kailani (Hudgens) to fly them to the coordinates in their tour helicopter. When the helicopter crashes the four of them find out that Sean was right and they are in fact on the Mysterious Island of legend and Sean's grandfather, played by a mischievous and under-used Michael Caine, is living there.

The plot is very lightweight and seems to be aimed at young children. The island is brightly colored and filled with dangers that don't generate any serious tension. You never feel that anyone is in any danger despite a giant lizard and an erupting volcano. Guzman is there to provide comic relief but he's so bumbling and immature that only the under five year olds will find much to laugh at.

Once they arrive on the island they learn that it is sinking and so they spend the rest of the movie trying to get off of it. This brings up the movies biggest plot hole. The island turns out to be Atlantis (although how it got into the middle of the South Pacific is never explained) and apparently it rises above the ocean and then sinks below it on a 140 year cycle. Somehow though, the exotic animals and vegetation keep coming back every time it rises back up above water.

It is only the likability of Johnson and Caine that make the movie watchable at all, at least by grown-ups. Caine is a scene stealer and I wish he was in it more. The back and forth between the two of them provides the funniest moments. Although I seriously question the decision to have Johnson sing a version of Louis Armstrong's "Wonderful World" while accompanying himself on the ukulele.

I actually paid the extra amount to see this movie in 3-D hoping that at least I would get some eye candy out of it, but I needn't have bothered. Apart from having some cherries bounce off of Johnson's pecs, the third dimension adds nothing to the second.

The ending hints at another sequel, possibly in space this time. I know that I for one won't be lining up to see it.

Vanessa Hudgens and Josh Hutcherson in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island may as well have been called Journey to CGI Island.  Other than a couple of sets and a few scenes filmed outside in Hawaii, most of this movie is animated.   The helicopter, the Nautilus, the creatures, the storm and most of the Island was all created on a computer screen.   And that includes those peck popping cherries as well.  CGI has its place in movies, but it eliminates the sense of discovery and adventure.  None of the CGI is at all convincing.

Scott mentioned the flaw in the history of the Islands 140 year cycle and how the exotic animals and vegetation keep coming back every time it rises back up above water.  Another flaw is that when the island sinks, it does so by breaking apart.  How have those thousand year old buildings survived every destructive sinking and rising?  None of this makes sense, but the entire film has ridiculous plot holes so it hardly makes a difference.

The biggest WTF scene for me was when Johnson and Hutcherson dive off the cliff, swim very deep into the ocean, find the Nautilus, open it's hatch and enter the submarine without flooding it in any way.  With a quick glance at the controls, they know exactly how to charge the batteries, start it up and drive it.  How they then collect their other three companions is likewise illogical.

As Scott also wrote, this is intended for children who will likely not question the ridiculousness of it all.  For adults however, this is as intellectual as an episode of "SpongeBob SquarePants."  The one and only scene I found amusing was when Hutcherson and Hudgens are about to share a "G" rated romantic scene and Johnson whispers to Hutcherson to, "Pop your pecs."

Scott liked and wanted more between Johnson and Cain.  I however, thought the film could have worked if it had been able to create more of a storyline between Johnson and Hutcherson.  The films story arc is supposed to be them bonding during an adventure, but it generates zero emotion.  It almost suggests a moment when Hutcherson tells Johnson to, "Come back."  as people in his life do not always do that.  That should have preceded a scene where Johnson almost does not.  It could have created a real moment with some genuine emotion.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is content to merely settle for lots and lots of CGI animation.  If as much effort was put into the writing as the especial effects, this could have been a decent film.  As it is, it is almost as unwatchable as it is pointless.

The 10 best Dwayne Johnson movies, ranked

K nown most prominently for his extensive history in WWE, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is and always will be an unstoppable boulder rolling down the hill of mediocrity and into the valley of triumphant victory. Before his extremely successful career in WWE, Johnson was a championship defensive end for the University of Miami. After going undrafted to the NFL in 1991, he began to take on his new name and persona: The Rock. As it turns out, this was just the beginning of the volcano for this rockstar, going on to become a globally known film presence following his rocky start in 2001’s The Mummy Returns .

His appearance in film and WWE was simultaneous for about five more years, but ultimately, he set his sights on the rocky road that is the American film industry. During this time and all the way up to 2007, Johnson was still being credited in films as “The Rock” or “Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.” After people got used to his stony good looks and wicked charm, Dwayne Johnson was a recognizable enough name.

After 20 years in TV and movies, Johnson has become so much more than what he was. Between all the work he has been doing, Johnson has founded his own luxury Tequila (Teremana), co-founded a production company (Seven Bucks Productions), as well as his very own exercise clothing line, and launched “The Rock” earbuds in collaboration with Under Armour. This man is not only a rockstar on screen, he is a rock-solid innovator of business and pleasure.

Johnson has even teased his fans on his hugely popular Instagram account that he might run for president, where he also posts inspiration for life, work, and exercise. This may seem over-the-top silly, but out of over 30,000 adults surveyed, 46% supported a presidential campaign for our action movie hero. What makes our guy so lovable? So many things, but today we will talk about the best Dwayne Johnson movies, ranking his top 10 (he has been in so many more).

Disclaimer: Since the Fast and the Furious series has taken off with no end in sight and launched Johnson into superstardom, they will be omitted from the list in order to appreciate his other works of film before his big deal.

10. Baywatch (2017)

  • Metacritic: 37%
  • IMDb: 5.5/10
  • Duration: 116m
  • Genre: Comedy, Action, Crime
  • Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Priyanka Chopra Jonas
  • Directed by: Seth Gordon

Getting our list going with a bit of a rocky start, Baywatch is a silly, fun action-comedy that takes its inspiration and just runs away with it. Plagued by big crime on their beautiful beaches, the exceedingly attractive and not-so-clever lifeguards of the bay decide to take matters into their own hands. Johnson plays Mitch Buchannon, the ‘Captain’ of his squad of bods. While this film does its best to revive the original series, it doesn’t quite do it justice with its crude jokes and confused plot. Despite that, the cast of characters (including Zac Efron) have their moments of glory — mostly in the form of physical prowess as they show off how much they worked out for their roles — but struggle to convey they are trying to act stupid in their roles. Overall, this film is not necessarily recommended but has some fun themes if you’re a big fan of the Rock or Efron.

9. Snitch (2013)

  • Metacritic: 51%
  • IMDb: 6.4/10
  • Duration: 112m
  • Genre: Thriller, Drama, Action
  • Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Barry Pepper, Susan Sarandon
  • Directed by: Ric Roman Waugh

Carrying the most serious tone of any film on our list today, Snitch surprises viewers with our leading man’s dedication. 18-year-old Jason is set up by a friend and receives a mandatory 10-year prison sentence, but his divorced father John Matthews (Johnson) decides he will do anything to keep his son safe. Based on a true story, this movie’s aim is to raise awareness of one of the prison system’s flaws. While the film overall doesn’t break any new ground film-wise, the performance from Johnson is impressive and consistent. In probably his best dramatic performance, Johnson’s character faces dangers like a drug cartel and major drug dealers threatening to end his life and leave his son stranded in prison. Opposite co-star Jon Bernthal, this is another movie on our list today that has a lot of potential, yet unfortunately, it falls flat a few too many times.

8. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012)

  • Metacritic: 41%
  • IMDb: 5.7/10
  • Duration: 94m
  • Genre: Adventure, Action, Science Fiction
  • Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens
  • Directed by: Brad Peyton

All-out corny fun for the whole family, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island delivers on everything you might expect from an unexpected sequel. In a sort of fan-fiction fusion piece, this film premise takes the more popular creative writings of Jules Verne ( 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Gulliver’s Island, Journey to the Center of the Earth , etc.) and combines it all to create a mish-mash of fun and excitement. Highlights of this film are our guy Johnson being Johnson, and a nice appearance from Michael Caine as the sassy and sarcastic grandfather. An important thing to remember before watching this movie: It’s a family and kids’ action movie. That being said, there are a few young stars in this film that didn’t go much farther afterward, and for good reason. Getting past the corny first 30 minutes, this film is basically just a display of Johnson’s many talents as he fights, sings, plays ukulele, gives surprising moments of sincerity, and does his peck dance for the world to see. There are also some surprisingly entertaining visual effects present in this film, which won’t go entirely unnoticed if you’re paying attention.

7. The Scorpion King (2002)

  • Metacritic: 45%
  • Duration: 92m
  • Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Drama
  • Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Steven Brand, Michael Clarke Duncan
  • Directed by: Chuck Russell

A spinoff tale stemming from The Mummy series, The Scorpion King is a fun action/adventure film that expands upon the fictional universe. When an evil ruler of the city of Gomorrah vows to destroy the outlying tribes, a skilled warrior and assassin named Mathayus is forced to unite them against a common threat. Johnson plays Mathayus, who is also interested because the evil leader threatens to destroy his homelands and the people who make them what they are. Though this film is based on the character from The Mummy Returns , this movie stands on its own and makes no attempts to piggyback on the charm of the original series. Due to this, the film gives everything that is expected from the cover: A studly and shimmering Johnson Johnson giving it his all. As his next big movie after his cameo in The Mummy Returns , this film was instrumental to Johnson’s career and where he would go next.

6. Fighting with My Family (2019)

  • Metacritic: 68%
  • IMDb: 7.1/10
  • Duration: 108m
  • Genre: Comedy
  • Stars: Florence Pugh, Lena Headey, Nick Frost
  • Directed by: Stephen Merchant

Very accurately based on a true story, Fighting with my Family gets into subject matter that Johnson can really get behind: WWE Wrestling. Besides his own self-starring action flicks that he produced ( Rampage, Skyscraper, Jumanji, Baywatch ), this was his first experience producing a film that was near and dear to Mr. Rock’s heart. A tight-knit, oddball wrestling family out of Norwich, England, aspires to join the WWE, but when only Paige — the youngest daughter — gets chosen at a recruiting event, the family encounters tests of separation and jealousy. Though we don’t see a lot of our Rock in this film, his presence is undeniably principal as he serves as a guide to our misguided main character. Since this is a true story, it’s no wonder that Johnson wanted this film to be made and this story to be told, considering he was really there in that time to help Paige and be the biggest man he has ever been: The Rock. This is the only role today where Johnson gets to show his roots to those who are unfamiliar with WWE, while also showing the world what the world of wrestling is all about.

5. Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)

  • Metacritic: 58%
  • IMDb: 6.7/10
  • Rated: PG-13
  • Duration: 123m
  • Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy
  • Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black
  • Directed by: Jake Kasdan

In the second — and not quite as good — installment of the revived and rejuvenated Jumanji films, Jumanji: The Next Level brings all the same fun and action it did before but with some new, familiar faces. The game has changed and the landscape is glitchy, causing all kinds of problems for our crew of friends and heroes, but there’s still only one thing to do: Save the world. In some ways, this movie makes some interesting comments about the world of gaming that we are currently in. The reason I say this is that the whole plot of this movie is because of the main character Spencer (Alex Wolff), who goes back into the game in order to become Bravestone once again. Who wouldn’t? To be strong, charming, and confident is any young man’s dream, all of which Dwayne Johnson is on an everyday basis. In this film, Johnson is actually inhabited by Spencer’s Grandpa, who is played by Danny DeVito. This means that Johnson had to do a loose impression of DeVito on screen, which didn’t really work great for me. The mannerisms of an older and sour man were spot on, but the speech he chose to take on was a bit distracting from the fun parts of the film. Either way, he still entertained throughout the film being the big, lovable guy we know him to be.

4. The Rundown (2003)

  • Metacritic: 59%
  • IMDb: 6.6/10
  • Duration: 104m
  • Genre: Adventure, Action, Comedy, Thriller
  • Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Seann William Scott, Rosario Dawson
  • Directed by: Peter Berg

In one of his earliest and very underrated films, The Rundown is an awesome buddy action comedy that delivers exactly what it promises. Like most Johnson films, this movie is a bit corny and over-the-top but entertains the socks off of unsuspecting audiences. Johnson plays Beck, a bounty hunter and “collector” who wants to be done with his life of violence and move on to start his own restaurant. His last job sends him to Brazil, where he must capture and return his boss’s son, played by Sean William Scott. Turns out, there’s a lot of political and social unrest in this little village of Brazil, where Beck gets caught up in being the hero once again. Throughout the movie, Beck continually says, “I don’t like guns”, which is great foreshadowing for an epic showdown finale that absolutely happens. Johnson is a strong and funny presence in this movie, which showed producers of that time that he was ready for more screen time in a similar fashion. Other than being a pivotal step in his career, this movie has a surprisingly impressive cast including Rosario Dawson and Christopher Walken as the bad guy. The chemistry between all of them is obvious, making this a great choice for our list today.

3. Central Intelligence (2016)

  • Duration: 107m
  • Genre: Action, Comedy, Crime, Mystery
  • Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Amy Ryan
  • Directed by: Rawson Marshall Thurber

This action-comedy film stars Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. Johnson plays Bob Stone, a former high school classmate of Kevin Hart’s character Calvin Joyner (a once popular athlete now working as an accountant). Bob, now a muscular CIA agent, reconnects with Calvin and needs his accounting skills to crack a case. It turns out Bob is on a mission to stop a dangerous criminal from selling top-secret satellite codes. Calvin gets dragged into the world of espionage and hilarious situations ensue as the unlikely pair team up.

2. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)

  • IMDb: 6.9/10
  • Duration: 119m

The Jumanji story is back for the first time in years, thanks to our leading man. In what was once a dark tale of family resentment and tragedy, this new addition to the universe is catered to a new generation of kids who spend arguably too much time playing video games. Similar to the original plot, a group of kids are sucked into a video game with only one way out: Finish the game. Provided with three lives this time, our characters have a lot more freedom to be wacky and careless with each other, which is exactly what is great about this movie. Despite it being another over-the-top action/adventure movie , this one has some of the best performances in any movie on our list today. Plus, that’s what The Rock does best, and we love him for it. Johnson plays Dr. Xander Bravestone, a muscly and charming archaeologist that literally uses a special power called ‘smolder’ against his enemies. This is a hilarious and meta way for Johnson to portray himself in a film, not only referencing himself as the big, buff, charming man he is but also harking back to his WWE days with the eyebrow smolder.

The greatest and undisputed best Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson movie is Moana , which is actually an animated movie from Pixar that was received with overwhelming approval. The story is about a young Polynesian woman named Moana, who is the daughter of the chief of an ancient island. Plagued by a curse because of the Demigod Maui and his mischief, Moana is called to the ocean — and by the ocean — to seek him out and correct the error of his ways. Maui (if you’re unfamiliar with Pacific Island mythology) is a demigod with a magical fish hook, giving him the power to shapeshift into any animal. Johnson voices for Maui, who is a stubborn and self-righteous character convinced he has done no wrong. In the film, Johnson’s voice acting is off the charts good, as he gives life to his character and becomes Maui. He even has some singing parts — since this movie has a handful of those — which are equally pleasant and surprising, reminding us what a multi-talented man he is. With help from the successfully enchanting and charming animation from Pixar, Johnson’s character is definitely his best, showing that you don’t have to show your face or rock-hard biceps to give an incredible performance.
