Where's Santa in Norfolk 2023

Read on for more on santa's grottos, santa by steam and santa's workshops in norfolk in 2023, updated 28/11/2023.

At this time of year Father Christmas becomes an incredibly busy man, but as he’s so friendly and thoughtful he will always find time to listen to your wish lists.

There’s nothing that Father Christmas loves more than talking to children, so he uses his super magical powers to whizz all over the county and can be in many places often at the same time!

You’ll find him in cosy cabins, in sparkly grottos, on festive trains and on horse-drawn sleighs in town centres, shopping centres, garden centres and family attractions. As he gets exceedingly hungry on his travels he even turns up for breakfast and lunch at some places!

So, along with his many helpers, do look out for Santa at the following locations this festive season…

PS. Don’t forget to leave out a treat or two for Santa and his reindeer on Christmas Eve. The cheeky elves have told us he likes smelly socks, but we think he would rather tuck into a tasty mince pie!

What’s On at Christmas in Norwich – Events and Attractions 2022

What’s On at Christmas in Norwich – Events and Attractions – If you love Christmas, you might find yourself on a city break in Norwich, the City of Stories: shopping in independent stores; dining in friendly one-off eateries; soaking up Christmas music as you pass a busker; taking a walking tour of the city’s historic pubs; sipping warming gluhwein at Sir Toby’s on Norwich Market; riding in a vintage drophead 1950’s Bentley or following a new sensory experience trail of Wandering Words.

norwich at christmas

“Norwich is a city at Christmas that offers you a bit of everything” said Norwich City Host Supervisor Richard Mitchell. “It’s a city to wander down ancient, cobbled streets with burgeoning festive windows, through winding pedestrian walkways festooned with twinkling Christmas lights or around the centuries old Anglican Cathedral where if you time it right the building echoes with carols during choir practice. There’s also some exciting new things to do this year too.”

norwich at christmas

In 2012 Norwich became the first city in England to be awarded UNESCO City of Literature status, therefore celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2022. On a first time visit to Norwich there’s no better way of experiencing the city than by following  Wandering Words  – a specially commissioned trail from the National Centre for Writing and Norfolk & Norwich Festival. Exploring Norwich through your eyes and your ears, listen on your phone (via a QR code at each trail location) to immersive audio recordings of poems and soundscapes. Five writers who have a connection with Norwich have responded creatively to celebrate the 10th anniversary. This is experiencing history in a totally new way.

Start your break as you mean to go on by eating and drinking, it’s Christmas! Enjoy all manner of festive foodie events in an  Igloo  presented by  The Assembly House . Book a  Shop & Stay break for £350  for two people which includes parking, breakfast and afternoon tea.

Another ‘new’ launching in Norwich this Christmas is  Yalm , an old Norfolk word meaning ‘to eat hungrily’. Yalm – in the art nouveau Royal Arcade – is an exciting new food experience. A two-storey food arcade showcasing a mix of Norfolk’s finest talent, kitchens and bars under one roof. With a keen eye on quality, the aim is to create an exciting, modern food experience offering all-day dining and drinking –the perfect spot to come and yalm with friends in one of the city’s most spectacular surroundings.

The Royal Arcade, The Norwich Lanes, The Cathedral Quarter, Elm Hill and Magdalen Street  are all locations where you’ll find the lion’s share of independent shops in Norwich. Boutiques, antiques, second-hand books, collectable teddy bears, galleries, lifestyle, jewellery, beauty, local crafts and vintage. As well as Jarrold. Norwich’s only award-winning independent department store over five floors including wine bar, deli and seafood restaurant.  Castle Quarter  and  Chantry Place  are the malls to visit for all your high street favourites.

The Tunnel of Light  (17 November – 5 January, free) with its mesmerising 57,000 LEDs returns to Hay Hill as does festive projections onto the 70ft walls of Norwich’s medieval castle (17 November – 5 January). Quite a sight in Norwich after dark. Whilst the city’s millennium building  The Forum  glows with warm golden lights and its large Christmas tree.

The Forum plays congenial host to many a festive market including Norwich’s largest,  Festive Fair at The Forum  (24 – 27 November, free). Here soak up seasonal swing with Norfolk tenor Benjamin Lake, while sensational soprano Catherine Joule will be singing Christmas carols and more. Shoppers will love the East Anglian stalls galore selling everything from jewellery, pottery, textiles, woodcraft, glassware, art, preserves, calendars, cards, prints, Christmas decorations, chocolates, candles and clothes.

Man’s best friend gets a bit of a treat too when The Forum presents  Santa’s Grotto for Dogs  (10 December, free). With many of us now travelling with our pooches (dog friendly rooms at  The Maids Head Hotel ), this is a fun and light-hearted seasonal event where you are actively encouraged to match your Christmas outfit with your dog’s Christmas outfit! Don’t miss it!

If you’re a writer, a reader or both then the National Centre for Writing’s  City of Literature Publishing Fair  (3 December, free) will keep your creative juices flowing and give you the opportunity to pick up some gifts. Help celebrate the vibrant independent publishing culture of the East of England at the event where you can meet publishers, browse and purchase their work, and take part in a series of interactive sessions throughout the day.

In between shopping and sightseeing stop for a fragrant  Glühwein at Sir Toby’s Beers , Norwich’s smallest bar. With or without a top up of rum or brandy this is a great place to people watch and slow down to enjoy the ambience of Norwich and its Christmas lights.

And it wouldn’t be Christmas without a traditional panto. Every year Norwich Theatre Royal excels itself with a show to end all shows. It’s hilariously funny, wonderfully colourful and bursting with local cliches. As well of course with catchy song, music and dance. See  Jack and the Beanstalk  (10 December – 7 January) starring Joe Tracini, Amanda Henderson, Linda John-Pierre and everyone’s favourite panto dame Richard Gauntlett.

Although there are quite a few sleeps to Christmas, November is the month when Christmas markets and fairs get going, giving you the chance to get organised with your gift shopping early.

Other events like festivals of light tend to start in November too, making the most of the dark evenings and atmosphere the colourful lights create. This is a great month to experience festive events, as tickets tend to be cheaper and crowds smaller.

Many events which start in November run right through December until Christmas, so check the dates as you decide which events to add to your festive diary.

Norwich Market at Christmas

This festive period, you don’t need to look any further than Norwich Market for the perfect Christmas – from gifts to lunch on the big day, and there’ll be little activities for children too.

Councillor Adam Giles, cabinet member with responsibility for Norwich Market said:

“Norwich Market is a special place all-year-round, but it has an extra sparkle at this time of year.

There really is something for everyone and if you are able to support these small local businesses we look forward to welcoming you there this Christmas-time.”

Josh Worley, chair of Norwich Market Traders Association and co-owner of Water + Earth said:

“Norwich Market is once again getting well into the festive spirit and hosting a number of events and activities in the lead-up to Christmas for everyone to take part in.

For us traders, setting up Santa's Grotto, and the many events taking part within it, is our way of giving a little something back to the families who support our incredibly diverse group of independent traders, and help make our historic market the place to shop for ethical, thoughtful and locally-sourced gifts this Christmas.”

What’s on?

Extra festive fun – activities especially for younger customers

Traders have worked together with the markets’ team to host a number of activities to keep little ones amused while you grab what you need from Norwich Market.

Thursday 17 November – The city will attract thousands of extra visitors turning out for the Christmas Switch on . Norwich Market’s lights will be switched on that day and many stalls will be open late that evening to keep you in tea-time treats or some late-night shopping to start grabbing your gifts.

Saturday activities

Stall 132 will be the venue for Saturday activities from 11am to 3pm, as follows:

Saturday 26 November – Father Christmas will be at the stall where little ones can say hello, get a small gift and post their letters.

The first hour from 11am to midday will be a quiet hour for children who would prefer to visit Santa at a quieter and calmer time.

Saturday 3 December – Bring the kids for festive face-painting.

Saturday 10 December – the lovely people from And Eat it and Cuppie Hut will have baked cookies for little ones to decorate

Saturday 17 December  – Father Christmas makes a return.

The grotto (on stall 132) will be opened daily from 1 December to post letters and will also feature a selfie-booth.

What to buy…

There are too many stalls and fantastic products to list them all, but here are just some of the Christmas highlights.

From gourmet gifts for the foodies in your life… Birchley’s has the most amazing tea advent calendars and The Little Red Roaster can cater to the tastes of any coffee lover. Sir Toby’s Beers and Substrata are the place to find new favourite tipples, and Churros for the People to sample Spanish delicacies. Don’t forget Trev’s Sweets and Treats for those with a sweet tooth. Even your furry family members are taken care with a visit to Joe’s Pets.

…To the eco-conscious You can pick up sustainable, earth-friendly beauty products from Water + Earth and if you’re looking for pre-loved and vintage items, you are sure to find a steal from Lovering and Co, Taxi vintage clothing, No-one Famous and Supply. Give tired items a new lease of life or get those favourite trousers taken up or in at PDP and Shoes and Keys. Be sure to check out new kid on the block The Upcycle Workshop, specialising in jewellery.

Getting you and the house ready for party season… From haircuts to weaves and eyelash extensions – Downtown Cuts, Kojak’s, ZB Hair and Mama B’s Brows have got you covered.

Get your home ready to greet your guests with seasonal centre-pieces, wreaths and garlands from Cary’s and Pond’s Flowers, or stunning succulents from Planted.

Don’t forget Mick’s Foam Stall and Norwich Electrical Stores for the DIY jobs you know need doing, or The Haberdashery and The Yarn and Craft Store for your Christmas craft supplies.

Give yourself a break from the hustle and bustle… When you need a break from all the browsing and buying, why not let someone else take care of lunch? The hardest bit will be what to pick – traditional fish and chips, spuds, bangers, bacon butties pies and peas, or Mediterranean meals to a taste of Asia, and so much more!

What to serve on the big day… For the freshest seasonal fayre – fruit and veg, cheeses, game, seafood and sweet treats – you’ll be totally spoilt for choice.

Find out the full list of stalls on the Norwich City Council website and don’t forget to follow the official Facebook and Instagram accounts run by the traders.

Parade Of Lights Hitting Broad Street This Saturday Published: November 26th, 2021 By: Sarah Genter

Parade of Lights hitting Broad Street this Saturday

NORWICH — The holiday season kicks off this Saturday with the return of the annual Parade of Lights. The parade, which marches down Broad Street, is set to begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 27.

"There is going to be a Parade of Lights this year, how exciting is that?" said Business Improvement District (BID) Board Member Mindy Chawgo. "There was not one last year. It takes a full year to plan, so I'm really pulling this out of my back pocket."

Despite the shorter than usual planning time, Chawgo reported the parade already has upwards of 50 participants. In addition to the multitude of floats, spectators can also enjoy coffee and hot chocolate provided by area vendors, and visit Santa in his igloo after the parade.

"Different vendors will be open a little bit later during the parade to serve cocoa and coffee," said Chawgo. "And then Santa will be the end, and he'll get dropped off in his igloo so that everybody can get a picture with Santa."

Chobani will also be holding their case giveaway in East Park after the parade.

"They give away a case of yogurt to every person. So they'll set up on the whole stage, and they'll line the stage with their cases of Chobani, and they'll do their case giveaway right after the parade. So you'll see a line from the stage around the park, going down the main road. It's great, people love it. They're so generous," said Chawgo. "And this ends the parade. So Santa Claus will come through at the very end, and he'll get in his igloo, and Chobani will do their case giveaway, and that completes the night."

The Parade of Lights has been a community staple for several decades since it's inception, estimated to be in the early 1980's, according to the Pennysaver and Evening Sun Publisher Richard Snyder.

"Unfortunately, I don't really remember exactly the year the parade started, probably in the early 80's. But at first it was the Pennysaver, the radio station, and the Evening Sun working in cooperation with the Norwich Merchants Association to make it happen. We didn't own the Sun at the time so it was basically the three media sources in the area that committed to plan and promote the event," Snyder explained.

Over the years, the parade grew to become what area residents know and love today. The date was changed from the Friday after Thanksgiving to the Saturday after, and the Pennysaver and Evening Sun took over as the main sponsor.

"As the years went along, Matt Cooney sold the radio station and we purchased the Evening Sun, so the Pennysaver and Evening Sun became the primary sponsor of the parade," said Snyder. "The other significant change was moving the parade to the Saturday evening after Thanksgiving. This came about at the suggestion of the City Fire Chief at the time, John Tighe, who previously was with the Corning, NY Fire Department.

"In Corning their holiday parade was in the evening and was known as the Festival of Lights Parade featuring their area’s fire department decked as rolling christmas trees full of lights. Using the chief’s knowledge and his coordination, and encouragement, of the area’s fire departments, our own version of the Holiday Festival of Lights Parade was born about 20 years ago."

Last year, the beloved parade was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Snyder said during the planning process for the 2021 Parade of Lights, the decision was made to pass on the role of organizer to a new group.

"As we set about planning this year's event, we decided it was time to pass the torch on to others, to not only keep the parade going, but to make it even better," he said. "With this in mind, I reached out to our friends at Chobani who then reached out to the Norwich BID, and they jointly have agreed to take up the stewardship of this Norwich tradition. The Pennysaver and Evening Sun will remain as a media sponsor."

"Chobani reached out to me and asked if there's something we could do. They do their case giveaway, so they wanted to do their case giveaway that night," said Chawgo. "Normally it's funded by the community. This year it's going to be funded by Chobani, which is great."

Going forward, Chobani has already signed on to be a sponsor of the Parade of Lights for several years, according to Chobani Internal Communications Senior Director Jeff Genung. Additionally, the BID will continue to plan and organize the parade every holiday season.

"So this was my learning curve year," Chawgo explained. "Which, I still think it's gonna be phenomenal. And then next year will be full bore, a full year of planning."

"The passing of the torch came from need, and came out of desire to make this community still have this amazing memory that we could all have together and share," she added. "So, to me, that's why we're doing it."

Snyder thanked previous participants and coordinators for helping to keep the parade going strong over the years.

"As a result of the tremendous cooperation of our county’s Fire Departments, who use their trucks to light up Broad Street each year in large numbers, the parade has been a success. Also our two major parade coordinators during this period, first Linda Green and then Mike McCormick, along with many of our own employees, put in a great deal of time and effort to make the parade as popular as it has been," he said.

"Plus, if it wasn't for the financial support of all types and sizes of business and organizations, the parade never could have lasted so long," he continued. "Each year the list of supporters and participants was long, but for me NBT was a key partner, and in the last 5 years or so Chobani has made their presence known with their tremendous yogurt giveaway in the park after the parade."

While the annual parade has seen some changes this year, it is still set to be a community event meant to bring people together.

"I want it to feel homey, I want it to feel like we're there together," said Chawgo. "To me, everything is about getting together and being together, and everything else is just the icing on the cake."

"Personally I’m proud that so many children have grown up with the memories of fun, music, and of course, Santa coming down Broad Street in all his splendor," said Snyder. "But it is truly all of the families that have braved the cold, and in some years the snow, that have made this parade so special."
