Coonoor, Tamil Nadu: The Complete Guide

A Tea-Focused Heritage Getaway in the Hills

coonoor places to visit timing

Dinodia Photo/Getty Images

As a tourist destination, Coonoor in Tamil Nadu is overshadowed by the popular hill station of Ooty , which sits above it. However, it's starting to realize its potential, while still remaining a quieter retreat away from the crowds. Tea is the big draw there. This Coonoor travel guide will help plan your trip.

Prior to being developed by the British in the 19th century, Coonoor was a sparsely populated hilly area inhabited mostly by local tribes. It formed part of the kingdom of Mysore, until the British defeated ruler Tipu Sultan in the fourth Anglo-Mysore war in 1799 and gained control of it. They decided Ooty was an ideal place to send their sick soldiers to recuperate, due to its cool European climate. A large number of British relocated there as well. Some of them began experimenting with tea growing in Coonoor, and finally succeeded after much trial and error.

In 1856, the tea from Coonoor Tea Estate received favorable reviews at a London auction. However, unfortunately, the size of land under cultivation wasn't enough to make the venture profitable. The lives of the early planters were difficult. Finding enough suitable and available land was a challenge, plus they had to contend with malaria and wild animals in the forests.

Nevertheless, by the end of the 19th century, viable tea plantations had been established on about 3,000 acres of land around Coonoor. A social club for the planters, the Coonoor Club had also been built and still functions as such today.

Although it took a while for Indians to like drinking tea (which is hard to believe, given their current widespread addiction to it!), the planters were able to sell enough tea in London to make substantial amounts of money. Their lifestyles became lavish and they swanned around in elegant bungalows with dance floors, manicured gardens, and tennis courts.

These days, Indians have replaced the British planters. Yet, Coonoor remains the place where the world-class Nilgiri tea originated.

Coonoor is situated about 1,850 meters (6,070 feet) above sea level in the mountainous Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu, in the far western corner of the state. It's not far from the borders of Kerala and Karnataka. The closest major cities are Bangalore in Karnataka (about 300 kilometers/185 miles north), and Kochi in Kerala (about 280 kilometers/170 miles south). Coimbatore, a large city in Tamil Nadu, is 68 kilometers/42miles south of Coonoor and also has an airport that receives flights from all over India.

How to Get There

The most picturesque and memorable way of reaching Coonoor is to take the UNESCO World Heritage Nilgiri Mountain Railway Toy Train . It runs all the way from the foothills at Mettupalayam, where the nearest major railway station is, up to Ooty. However, the best scenery is along the stretch from Mettupalayam to Coonoor. Make sure you book well in advance.

Alternatively, Coonoor can be reached via National Highway 181. Taking this road, the travel time is about two and a half hours from Coimbatore, or four hours from Mysore in Karnataka. The route from Coimbatore passes through dense forest is undoubtedly spectacular. However, if you suffer from motion sickness, you may want to avoid it or take precautions. The sharp ascent and frequent hairpin turns can be torturous, especially if you get a driver who speeds up and brakes suddenly.

Coonoor is a refreshing destination to escape the summer heat, from March to May. Keep in mind that May is peak season, due to summer school holidays. If you're not fond of rain, avoid October and November, as the northeast monsoon brings heavy downpours and may trigger landslides along the road. Coonoor also receives rain from the southwest monsoon, from June to September, but not quite as much. December to February is the dry winter season. Temperatures during this time range from around 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) at night to 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit) in the day. The overnight temperature has been known to drop as low as zero on occasion in January, though!

What to Do There

Not surprisingly, Coonoor is one of the top places to visit tea plantations in India . Tranquilitea, a local tea industry pioneer, offers 90-minute gourmet tea tasting experiences twice-daily at their tea estate on the slopes of Tenerife Hill in Coonoor. You'll be able to sample the teas and gain insight into how they're made. (What's not well known is that Nilgiri teas are grown at altitudes higher than Darjeeling teas, giving them their intense aroma). Follow it up with a delicious High Tea there. You can also see how tea is processed at Highfield Tea Factory, Brooklands Tea Factory, and Homedale Tea Factory.

Coonoor town is characterized by the usual rampant concrete construction and chaos that's common in India, and has very little of the colonial appeal you may expect. Hence, it's best to head to Upper Coonoor, where a more refined and peaceful atmosphere prevails.

The Green Shop in Upper Coonoor's Bedford is worth visiting for its range of natural, fair-trade products such as honey, beeswax items, spices, herbs, grains, coffee, chocolates, essential oils, and garments. It's run by the Last Forest, an initiative of the Keystone Foundation , which works to improve the livelihoods of indigenous communities. There's another branch in Ooty that serves food and has an interesting bee museum.

If cheese is your thing, you'll be pleased to know that cheese-making is a tradition in the Nilgiri mountains. Acres Wild combines it with organic farming. To find out how to make your own gourmet artisan cheeses, stay at their farm on the outskirts of Upper Coonoor and take their compact 2-day cheese-making course . It's possible to extend the course if you want to learn the techniques for extra types of cheese. Otherwise, stop by Baker's Junction in Bedford to buy their cheeses (try the Colby, Gruyere and signature Camembert).

Upper Coonoor is an enjoyable neighborhood to stroll around. 12-hectare Sim's Park sprawls down a hillside and is the main attraction. It was established in 1874 by J. D. Sim, who was the secretary of the Madras Club, and is said to have as many as 1,000 types of plants from all over the world. The park is open daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and costs 30 rupees per person to enter. The annual fruit and vegetable show, in May, is renowned. Even though a lot of day-tripping tourists visit the park, it remains much less crowded than the botanical gardens in Ooty. From Sim's Park, wander along Kotagiri Road, past old colonial bungalows and tea gardens (you can do a loop and end up back at Sim's Park via Walker's Hill Road).

Dolphin's Nose Road will take you east of Upper Coonoor to a viewpoint of the same name. It provides an arresting vista of the Nilgiri mountains and Catherine Falls. You can stop off at another viewpoint, Lamb's Rock, on the way. It overlooks the Coimbatore plains. If you're feeling energetic, it's possible to trek to Dolphin's Nose from lesser-known Lady Canning's Seat nearby. Trekking from Catherine Falls to the small hill station of Kotagiri is recommended as well. Wandertrails offers this guided trek.

The ruins of 18th century Droog Fort, used by Tipu Sultan, is another great destination to trek to. The scenic but somewhat strenuous trail goes through Nonsuch Tea Estate.

The lush vegetation around Coonoor is also home to many species of birds. Avid birdwatchers can join this four-hour birdwatching experience .

Those who are interested in Coonoor's heritage should include isolated (and rather haunting) Tiger Hill Cemetery on their itineraries too. This largely overgrown British Gothic cemetery, set up in 1905, is where the British tea planters are buried. There's another older cemetery next to All Saints' Church, with graves of British soldiers dating back to 1852.

Where to Stay

For a complete tea experience, stay amid the tea gardens. Top options include Tranquiltea's Tenerife Hill (authentic Badaga indigenous cuisine is served, which is a bonus), the Tea Nest on Singara Tea Estate, Storyteller , or Sunvalley Homestay . Glendale Tea Estate's Runnymede and Adderley guesthouses are budget options.

Many of the accommodations in Upper Coonoor are British planter's bungalows that have been converted into hotels, and they have fascinating histories. The Gateway Taj hotel on Church Road , which was originally the famous Hampton Manor, is the grandest option. Second is Neemrana's Wallwood Garden.

SerentipityO's 180° McIver has a 180 degree view of Coonoor town and six rooms in an ancestral bungalow built in the early 1900s. The delightful Strathearn Bed and Breakfast provides intimate boutique accommodations in a 120 year-old Scottish bungalow.

Tranquilitea offers an interesting option in Upper Coonoor for visitors who'd prefer to stay in self-contained accommodations. The Club House is housed in the shell of a converted tea warehouse and has two luxurious suites with their own kitchenettes. A personal chef can be provided if you don't want to cook.

The YWCA Wyoming guesthouse is the best budget choice in a heritage property. Or, check out Kumar's Mountain View Cottage .

Where to Eat and Drink

You'll find the best vegetarian south Indian food in Coonoor town at inexpensive Hotel Sri Lakshmi, opposite the bus stand. Another decent option for a non-vegetarian south Indian meal in town is Hotel Ramachandra, about five minutes walk from the bus stand. The signature Wellington Paratha is a delicacy there.

If you like sweets, drop into historic Crown Bakery in the heart of Coonoor town and pick up some iconic varkey biscuits.

La Belle Vie, the classy restaurant at 180° McIver, has an eclectic Indian and European menu. You'll also get delicious pizzas at the cozy Open Kitchen in Bedford.

For fabulous coffee and cakes, Ababa Cafe in Bedford is the place! Or, for Indian-style tea and snacks, hit up The Chaiwala. It's a tiny, family-run place in Upper Coonoor.

Hopscotch, at the Vivek Hotel , is fun retro-style pub with live music and a pool table.

The British, who ruled the country during colonial times in tropical India, had to put up with oppressive summer heat, dust, and humidity, which made them uncomfortable and worn out. As they were used to chilly and pleasant weather, they searched for cool locations on high hills that would be comparable to the English climate. For a few months, they did not have to work themselves into a sweaty mess on the plains in the blazing sun. They were successful in their arduous hunt for hilly areas to cool down in the summer getaway. The intrepid British were responsible for discovering and developing the majority of the hill towns in the Himalayas in North India, as well as the Eastern Ghat and Western Ghat mountains in South India.

Coonoor Travel Guide: From Places to Visit to What to Pack

Here is a complete Coonoor Travel Guide, covering everything from Places to Visit in Coonoor to What to Pack for Coonoor.

Coonoor, with its sprawling tea plantations and panoramic valleys, is the second most visited tourist place in the Nilgiris, after Ooty. Coonoor is just 17 kilometers from Ooty and is popular as a weekend getaway on its own terms or it can be clubbed with an Ooty tour .

Check out my comprehensive Coonoor travel guide here for all the information you need to plan an awesome trip.

Coonoor Travel Guide: Places to See

The most important places to visit are easily accessible by road and can be covered in one or two days’ time.

Sims Park is a botanical garden in Coonoor, a must see place.

Established in 1874 by the then Madras mayor, J. D. Sims, Sim’s Park is a Japanese-style botanical park stretching over 30 acres of land in Upper Coonoor. The park is home to some exotic plants and trees that co-habit with native fauna. Sim’s Park is less than 3 kilometers from Coonoor Railway Station and the main bus depo. You can go boating in the lake here.

Ashley’s Tip: Sim’s Park hosts an annual vegetable show in the month of May, in which skilled artisans design and exhibit vegetable crafts in different shapes and sizes. May will be a great time to plan your trip to be part of this show.

Lamb’s Rock

Lamb’s Rock is a must-see spot in Coonoor with its mesmerizing views and quaint surroundings. Located just 7 kilometers from Coonoor Railway Station, and en route to Dolphin’s Nose viewpoint, Lamb’s Rock is a great place for hiking and picnicking with family.

This is the place to lose yourself to nature amidst chirping birds and playful monkeys.

After reaching the parking area, you have to buy tickets and once you enter, you have to take the paved way, twisting and turning through a pine forest, to reach the viewing point. The place is named after a certain captain Lamb who earnestly pursued paving the way to the viewpoint.

A family hiking to Lambs rock, a place to visit in Coonoor

Dolphin’s Nose View Point

Dolphin’s Nose is a viewing point about 12 kilometers from Coonoor town. It is a mountain with a spectacular view of Catharine Falls on one side and several smaller water falls on the other side, facing Kotagiri. The viewing point got its unusual name on account of the elongated tip of the mountain that resembles a dolphin’s nose.

You can drive till the entrance of the viewing point, from where you need to get tickets for a nominal charge. Once inside, you get a 180-degree breathtaking panoramic view of the Nilgiris from a height of 1550 meters.

Ashley’s Tip: If you want to make the most of your visit to Dolphin’s Nose, plan to spend half a day there, carry a picnic basket and spend some quality time with your dear ones. If you are in a hurry and planning to cover major spots in Coonoor in just one day, you can avoid this place. During peak season and weekends, you can expect long lines of traffic and it could take a while to get inside. If you are in a hurry, get down somewhere on the way and click photos on the roadside. I bet you, they are going to be spectacular!

A view of Dolphins nose viewpoint, a place to visit in Coonoor

Catherine Falls

Catherine Falls is a waterfalls that is a must-see in Coonoor.

Although situated in Kotagiri, Catherine Falls can easily be made part of a Coonoor trip as it is just 22 kilometers from Coonoor Railway Station. Catherine Falls is a double-cascaded waterfall, where the upper cascade is at a height of 79 meters.

If you are pumped for hiking, drive to the Catherine Falls viewpoint parking area, and hike through the tea plantations across a local village for one kilometer to reach the viewpoint. Listen to the music of nature in the murmurs of the falls and you bet the walk will be as beautiful as the view.

Ashley’s Tip: There are no eateries in the stretch to Catherine Falls, so it is best to carry sufficient water and snacks with you, but do not leave any trash behind!

Tea Plantations

A visit to Coonoor is incomplete without a stroll through its tea plantations and an experience of tea tasting in one of its tea factories. Highfield Tea Factory is the most famous tea factory in Coonoor.

Here, you can learn about the tea-making process and taste a variety of flavored teas. In Coonoor’s tea plantations, you will most likely find a photographer who will get you dressed in the traditional attire of tea plantation laborers and get you some amazing photographs, posing and holding the traditional tea leaves basket amidst the plantations.

Best Time to Visit Coonoor

Coonoor is a year-round tourist destination, but October to March is considered the best time to visit. Check out here what each season will feel like in Coonoor.

March to June

The summer months of March, April, May, and June are considered peak seasons in Coonoor. This is because

  • The schools close for summer vacations during these months,
  • Sim’s Park hosts an annual vegetable show in the month of May, attracting a huge crowd from across Tamil Nadu
  • Tourists in the plains throng to hill stations to escape the extreme heat in the summer months

During the summer months, Coonoor stays warm at a temperature between 25 °C to 37 °C.

Ashley’s Tip: While this is peak season, there have been instances of drought and water shortage in March in recent years. It will be best to look up any water-shortage news about Coonoor before you visit in the summer months.

July to October

July is the beginning of the monsoon season in Coonoor which peaks in September. During this time Coonoor gets quite slushy. If you want to avoid the crowd or intent to spend most of your trip in a tea plantation or a resort with in-house activities, this might be the best time as hotel charges are the cheapest during the monsoon season.

Post-monsoon, when the rains get lighter in October, you can see the lakes and waterfalls at their mightiest. The valleys turn green with the spurt of new fauna making it a spectacular time to visit.

November to February

This is the time when the rains start making way for chilly and misty weather in the Nilgiri hills. Coonoor is only mildly cold at a temperature ranging between 10 °C to 20 °C making your trip a pleasant one.

How to Get Around in Coonoor

Hiring a private car, bike, or auto rickshaw is the best way to get around and visit all major attractions. You can contact your hotel to arrange a vehicle for you. If you are on a one-day visit and arrive by train, you can hire a taxi or auto rickshaw just outside the station to take you on a day trip.

Ashley’s Tip: Put your haggling skills to best use when hiring a vehicle in Coonoor.

Coonoor Travel Guide: Where to Eat

Compared to Ooty, Coonoor has fewer options for restaurants. I have listed some of the best restaurants in Coonoor here.

Café: Open Kitchen, Third Wave Coffee, Cafe Koffi Bean, Cafe Fully Loaded

South Indian: Sri Ramachandra Lunch Home, Coonoor Railway Station Food Court

North Indian: Khana Khazana Pure Veg Indian Restaurant,

Asian: Bagaicha Restaurant (Chinese, near Sims Park)

Continental: Café Diem (Reservation required), La Belle Vie, Hopscotch

Where to Shop in Coonoor

Coonoor is a great place to shop for tea, chocolates, and cheese. You can also buy spices, Toda handicrafts, and woolen wear here.

Coonoor Main Bazaar : Woolens, trinkets, spices, and handicrafts (unleash your haggling skills to get great discounts)

Green Shop, Coonoor: Organic honey, chocolates, souvenirs, essential oils, organic soaps and self-care products, Toda-embroidered shawls, and runners.

Highfield Tea Estate: Tea powder, chocolate, cheese

What to Pack for Coonoor

Coonoor being a winter destination, you will need to pack accordingly. If you are planning a long trip to the Nilgiris, covering Ooty, Coonoor, and Kotagiri, here is a two-week winter packing list . The must pack items for Coonoor are listed here:

Clothing : If traveling in the winter months from November to February, carry heavy woolens; at any other time of the year, light woolens will do.

Footwear : Carry comfortable sneakers as there will be lots of walking over uneven and slippery surfaces.

Umbrella or Raincoat : If visiting in the monsoon months from July to September, a raincoat is a must. Nilgiris receive rain in 9 months a year, so it is best to carry an umbrella with you for any unanticipated rain.

Lifestyle : Carry sunscreens and use them even if it is not so sunny, as you are exposed to a higher level of UV rays on hill stations due to their altitude. Don’t forget to throw your moisturizer and lip care cream into your toiletries bag during the winter months to avoid dry skin and chapped lips!

What's the best place to see the April 2024 solar eclipse? One state is the easy answer.

coonoor places to visit timing

An April solar eclipse will bring a fantastic sky spectacle over the homes of tens of millions of Americans — but time is running out to make plans to join them.

Travelers will want to find an area with clear weather within the 115-mile-wide path of totality , "Standing anywhere else is useless, you have to be in that zone," said eclipse chaser David Makepeace, also known as the Eclipse Guy . "That's what makes it special."

The eclipse's path will cross 13 states from Texas to Maine, and experts say the southern end of the path has the best chances for good viewing. Texas' typically sunny weather, major cities ready for tourists and location under the path all combine to make it an easy recommendation for people willing to travel.

But not everyone will want to travel to Texas. And there's other factors to consider when picking a viewing spot, including traffic, which some experts warn could rival or surpass that of the 2017 solar eclipse .

"It will likely be the most-viewed astronomical event in American history," eclipse chaser Michael Zeiler, who runs the Great American Eclipse website , said. While 31 million people live in the path of totality, millions more are expected to flock to the narrow band of land that will be temporarily be plunged into darkness on the afternoon of April 8.

Travel agencies across the country continue to be busy booking weddings, honeymoons, "buddymoons," and other eclipse-focused events as the big day approaches. Accommodations were still available at several major cities in the eclipse path as of Friday, including in Dallas, Indianapolis and Cleveland. A sampling of small towns in the path also had space available.

But don't worry, there's still time to decide where to go to get the best view, and USA TODAY has some ideas for you.

Why is this eclipse so noteworthy?

Total solar eclipses are very rare events to begin with, as they only occur every 18 months around the world, Dave Clark, operator of National Eclipse.com , said. Many of them occur over the ocean or very remote parts of the world .

And the one in April will come right through three countries in North America: Mexico, the U.S., and Canada. "This is a very rare, tremendous opportunity ... a once-in-a-lifetime event for most people," Makepeace said.

In the U.S. alone, hundreds of cities and smaller towns in 13 states lie along the path. Others will see a partial eclipse.

And compared to the total eclipse in 2017, this one is longer in duration, has a wider path of totality, and occurs over or close to many major cities, according to Space.com .

Among solar eclipses, experts say a total solar eclipse stands out, and is far more impressive than the annular "ring of fire" eclipse the U.S. witnessed in October .

This will also be our last chance to see one for a while: In North America, the next total solar eclipse won't be until 2044,  according to NASA .

The best eclipse viewing is expected to be in Texas

Weather remains the biggest wildcard when it comes to seeing eclipses. With this eclipse, the general thinking is that the farther south you are the better, due to decreased cloud chances. That means Texas is a natural destination for many eclipse chasers.

Specifically, Zeiler says the Hill Country of Texas – which includes San Antonio – "has the best weather prospects in the U.S." for eclipse viewing. Also, the eclipse will last longer in Texas than in any other state in the U.S., according to the National Eclipse website.

But anything is possible weatherwise on eclipse day itself: It could be cloudy in Texas and clear in Maine, Clark said.

And if you are socked in with clouds, prepare to be disappointed. The skies will darken quite a bit, but that's about all you will see. "For those few moments, it will feel dark and stormy," Makepeace said.

April's eclipse can be viewed from cities, towns or rural areas

Eclipse experts emphasize that where you go is really a personal preference, if you want to experience it in a city, small town or a rural area.

One upside to seeing it in a rural area is that there won't be tall buildings around to obstruct the view, Makepeace said.

A downside to small towns and rural areas is the onslaught of traffic that could overwhelm their road infrastructure . Lorain County, in Northeast Ohio west of Cleveland, for example, is telling its residents to have three days worth of food, fuel and water on hand, due to the traffic that's expected.

Astrophysicist Antonella Fruscione, who lives in the Boston area, will be traveling all the way to San Antonio with 18 family and friends – some from as far away as Europe – to see the total eclipse. "It's very close to the center of totality and the high probability of no clouds in April," Fruscione said.

What's important besides weather?

Zeiler, a veteran of 11 total solar eclipses on six continents around the world, says to look at two factors in addition to weather: mobility and accessibility.

"There's no single 'best' place, it depends on a couple of factors," Zeiler told USA TODAY.

By mobility, he means ease of travel both before and especially after the eclipse. Before the eclipse, if you're in a car, "have a road network available where you can evade clouds," he said. And after the eclipse, traffic jams will be a real problem, so having multiple routes away from the eclipse will be crucial.

By accessibility, he's referring to available accommodations. He said cities like Dallas would be a good choice due to the plentiful places for tourists to stay.

A view of a short dock stretching out over a calm body of water during the daytime. A small boat rests at the end of the dock. A bridge runs across the water, and on one side of the bank are tall buildings.

“Keep Austin weird” is the decades-old mantra in this capital of live music, colorful characters and, of course, Texas. But Austin, now the country’s 10th-most-populous city, is looking very different: Tesla Cybertrucks are pulling up beside pickups as this college town, home to the University of Texas, just keeps growing. South by Southwest , the signature music festival and conference, starts March 8, but any spring or autumn weekend is an invitation to fall in love with the city. Admire the skyline from a kayak on Lady Bird Lake, treat yourself to barbecue (it’s Texas, after all), and spend an evening carousing Sixth Street until you find your crowd. But whatever you do, for the love of Willie Nelson — one of those colorful Austin characters — start each morning with a breakfast taco.

  • The Line ’s prime location means that many of its rooms — and its pool — overlook both the Colorado River and the Congress Avenue Bridge. There is also a Veracruz All Natural stand in the lobby, so you can get delicious breakfast tacos without changing out of your slippers. Rooms start at $215.
  • Austin Motel on South Congress Avenue is easy to spot thanks to its iconic, phallic neon sign that reads, “So close yet so far out” — an accurate description of the proximity to downtown and the hip vibe of this redesigned motor lodge with a heated pool and a courtyard perfect for predinner drinks with fellow travelers. Rooms from $203.

  • Austin is smaller than Houston or Dallas, but driving or using a ride-hailing app like Uber is still the easiest way to get around. Solar eclipse 2024: Here's what you need to know to watch it in south-central Pennsylvania

coonoor places to visit timing

In just a few weeks, residents in Pennsylvania will be able to watch a spectacular show in the sky − a total solar eclipse.

"This is the must-see astronomy event," said Brian Lada, a meteorologist with AccuWeather.com. "If you're going to see one, this is it."

Some areas in Pennsylvania, such as Erie, will be in the perfect position to see the total eclipse, he said. The south-central part of the state, including Adams, Lebanon and York counties, will not be in the sweet spot, but observers still will be able to see much of it.

Here's what you need to know about the solar eclipse:

What is a total solar eclipse?

During a total solar eclipse, the moon passes in between Earth and the sun, and the face of the sun is completely blocked, according to NASA . The sky becomes dark, and the temperature drops about 10 degrees.

Weather-permitting, observers will be able to see the sun's corona − its outer atmosphere − which is usually obscured by the bright face of the sun, the government agency says.

Nocturnal animals sometimes will wake up during a total eclipse while others think it's time to go to sleep, NASA says.

Some locations in the United States, such as Erie, Pennsylvania , will be in the path of totality, where the moon's shadow completely covers the sun. Outside of those areas, observers will notice the sky appears slightly darker than before the eclipse, depending upon how much of the sun is covered, NASA says.

When is the total solar eclipse?

The total solar eclipse will happen on Monday, April 8.

"The duration of totality will be up to 4 minutes and 27 seconds, almost double that of The Great American Eclipse of August 21, 2017," according to  Great American Eclipse .

The next big total solar eclipse in the United States will occur on Aug. 12, 2045.

Which U.S. cities are in the path of totality?

The total solar eclipse will pass over Mexico, the United States, and Canada, NASA says.

The following major cities in the United States will be in the path of totality:

  • Dallas, Texas
  • Idabel, Oklahoma
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Poplar Bluff, Missouri
  • Paducah, Kentucky
  • Carbondale, Illinois
  • Evansville, Indiana
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Erie, Pennsylvania
  • Buffalo, New York
  • Burlington, Vermont
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire
  • Caribou, Maine

What time will the total solar eclipse happen?

Times to view the solar eclipse will vary depending on where observers are located.

According to TimeandDate.com , here are the times to view the solar eclipse in south-central Pennsylvania:

  • Partial eclipse begins at 2:05 p.m.
  • Maximum eclipse begins at 3:21 p.m.
  • Partial eclipse ends at 4:33 p.m.

What will observers in south-central Pa. see of the solar eclipse?

South-central Pennsylvania, including Adams, Lebanon and York counties, is not in the path of totality, but observers in this area will see more than 90 percent of the solar eclipse if it's not cloudy.

"All that's going to be left is just a little sliver of sunlight in the sky for a period on April 8th," Lada said.

The best time to look at it will be 3:21 p.m., he said.

Observers should look to the southwest, about halfway up in the sky, to see it, said Todd Ullery, planetarium director for the York County Astronomical Society and solar system ambassador for NASA.

Don't forget to wear proper eye protection − special solar glasses or welders glass No. 14 − while viewing it, he said.

The solar eclipse will not have a sunset effect in south-central Pennsylvania even though most of the sun will be covered, Ullery said. It will seem more like a cloud has moved in front of the sun.

During the maximum part of the eclipse, shadows will be sharper and give an eerie atmosphere, he said. That's because a smaller amount of the sun is visible, making the crisp-edge shadows.

Watch for a comet, too, during the solar eclipse

It's possible that observers might be able to see a comet during the total solar eclipse, Ullery said.

It's called Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks .

It would have to be 100 times brighter than normal to be seen, Ullery said. However, comets do sometimes get really bright when near the sun.

Those with special telescopes might be able to point them in the direction of the comet to find it, Jeri Jones of Jones Geological Services in Spring Grove said.

Where to see the solar eclipse in south-central Pennsylvania

South-central Pennsylvania residents do not have to go anywhere special to see it unless they travel to a location in the path of totality to see the full eclipse. All they need to do is step outside.

Some events are being planned in the region to celebrate the celestial event.

The York County Astronomical Society plans to have telescopes at John C. Rudy Park for people to be able to safely look through them to see the crescent sun, Ullery said. More details will be announced closer to the time.

A solar eclipse party is planned from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. April 8 at Codorus State Park. It will be in the classroom building area along Marina Road.

Jeri Jones of Jones Geological Services in Spring Grove and Red Lion Telescopes will have instruments available for the public to safely view the eclipse. The Friends of Codorus State Park will be handing out solar eclipse glasses while the supplies last.

Solar eclipse viewing safety

Do not look directly at the sun. It could damage your eyes.

Now is the time to buy the special solar eclipse glasses from reputable companies for the upcoming event before they are sold out. Welders glass No. 14 is another option.

Buy them now: Everything you need to know about solar eclipse glasses, including where to get them

Anyone who has the glasses from prior events should make sure they are still safe to use, Ullery said.

Use a clear lightbulb to check for any pinholes or crinkles that would indicate damage, he said. After that, check them against the sunlight, but be prepared to discard them if anything extra bright can be seen.

An alternative to glasses is to take a colander outside and let the sunlight pass through the holes, Ullery said. View the shadow on the ground to see the crescents.

"... over the two-hour period of time that the moon is moving in front of the sun, you can watch the shape of the sun change by looking at the shadow caused by the colander," he said.

See a Map of Where the Deadly Texas Wildfires Are Spreading

T he second-largest wildfire in U.S. history, and the largest in state history, is currently sweeping across the Texas Panhandle , burning through more than one million acres of land.

Two people have now been confirmed dead as a result of the blazes. Joyce Blankenship, an 83-year-old grandmother was discovered in the remains of her burned home, while Cindy Owens, an Amarillo woman in her 40s, died Tuesday after she exited her truck for an unknown reason while driving in the Texan city Canadian. Sgt. Chris Ray of the Texas Department of Public Safety said that "the fire simply overtook her," NBC reported.

The largest of the fires—which spans nearly 1.1 million acres—began at Smokehouse Creek and was 15% contained as of Sunday, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.

Map of wildfires in Texas and Oklahoma.

The Windy Deuce Fire in Moore County, which covers more than 144,000 acres, was 55% contained on Sunday. The Grape Vine Creek fire, at 34,800 acres, was 60% contained. The Magenta Fire in Oldham County, spanning approximately 3,300 acres, was 85% contained. The 2,000-acre 687 Reamer Fire was 10% contained.

On Sunday, Moore County Sheriff’s office warned that a new fire was possible in the Canadian River area because of high winds, low humidity, and large amounts of grass. The office told residents to prepare to evacuate if necessary.

Fire officials from Lubbock, Texas, help put out smoldering debris of a home destroyed by the Smokehouse Creek Fire in Stinnett, on Feb. 29, 2024.

Evacuations have been ongoing across the region. Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a state of disaster declaration in 60 counties earlier in the week. Citizens of Moore, Potter, Hemphill, and Hutchinson counties have been forced to leave their homes. Evacuation orders were also issued for communities in Wheeler, Allison, Kelton, and Briscoe, but those were reportedly lifted earlier this week.

Fourteen fires were also burning in the neighboring state of Oklahoma, across more than 319,000 acres, on Sunday—part spillover from the Smokehouse Creek blaze. Oklahoma’s Department of Agriculture, Food & Forestry reported two new fires that burned 933 acres.

The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag warning —indicating dangerously dry and windy weather—until 9 p.m. Sunday for Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle. A cold front was expected to move into the area on Monday and could bring some relief.

Multiple vehicles and multiple residences are seen destroyed by the Smokehouse Creek Fire in Canadian, Texas, on Feb. 29, 2024.

During a visit to the southern border in Brownsville, U.S. President Joe Biden spoke out about the fires, thanking first responders for “risking their lives to save others” and urging locals to heed official warnings.

“When disasters strike, there is no red state or blue state where I come from. There are just communities and families looking for help,” he said, adding that Texas has received $13 billion in relief funding throughout his presidency. He also linked the disaster to environmental concerns, noting: “I love some of my Neanderthal friends, who still think there’s no climate change.”
