A travel cat litter box setup in a car works pretty much the same way. The difference is that you have more freedom about where you set up your box.

You may want to just set up the box in your trunk or back compartment. Or bring your cat into a restroom. I advocate getting a cat carrier that comes with its own litter box , or one that is large enough to fit a portable tray.

I caution against setting a portable litter box outside in a parking lot or rest area because your cat could get spooked enough to run.

Also, it has proven to leak after just a few uses, in some cases, so we suggest ensuring that it is emptied and wiped clean after each use, if possible. Also, there have been some difficulties folding and rolling it so that it stows away properly.

Can You Put a Litter Box in a Cat Carrier?
