What to Wear when Travelling in Australia

Michela Australia Travel Planning Packing Tips 10

Jeans & T-shirt. Skirt & blouse. Technical pants & T-Shirts. What shall I wear? An obvious question we all ask ourselves all the times before packing. What to wear when when travelling in Australia is challenging, especially for the first time traveller, who does not know much about the country and its environment.

Travelling around Australia means crossing different climate zones with varying conditions of weather and temperatures. You can be travelling from desertic areas of the Australian Outback with hot and dry weather to the mild Mediterranean climate of the South-West regions, too hot and humid areas of the Tropical North.

And this happens within a few hours flight. To enjoy Australia’s great outdoors and its diverse environment, you have to be active and quickly adjust to weather changes. And the weather can suddenly change in Australia with big temps drop overnight. So it’s good to be prepared and know when it’s the best time to visit Australia and pack efficiently.

How to choose what to wear in Australia for travel

To get active in the outdoors, you will need comfortable, light-weight travel wear that offers maximal freedom with any movements and high comfort in any situation and weather.

I always travel long-term in Australia and know how important it is to travel light and at the same time to wear proper clothes that make you feel warm, dry and protected in all weather conditions.

What not to wear in Australia

There are a few things that you should not wear when travelling abroad and especially in Australia:

  • Tight Jeans and Leggings, especially on a long-haul flight .
  • Synthetic fabrics for all kind of clothing, they are not breathable.
  • Dark colours, avoid black, blue and brown and prefer all pastel colours, beige, etc.
  • Singlets at the beach, the Australia sun is strong, cover your shoulders and arms.
  • Flip flops (thongs) in the bush or on walking trails.

On my solo travels in Australia , I have learned many things about the most suitable wear, so I put together these tips to help you get started with the essential things when packing for your Australia trip.

What to wear in Australia in Summer

Australian summer starts around the beginning to middle of December and lasts till the end of February, but March can have hot days. Depending on which region you travel to, the weather changes a lot. In the southern regions from west to east, the weather can be quite hot and dry so you will need to wear shorts with T-shirts, possibly in light colours.

I would recommend wearing long sleeves if you are sensitive to the sun. In Australia, you must protect your skin from the high UVs in the sun-rays.

At the beach, always wear a wide-brimmed hat and cover your shoulders and arms to avoid sun-burning. Make sure you protect your eyes from the intense sunlight with the right sunglasses.

In Northern Tropical Australia during summer, it will be raining a lot and, it will be hot and sticky with temps around 35-45°C, not the best time for a visit. If it happens to travel to North Queensland, Darwin, or Nort Western Australia, be sure you pack functional light-wear to minimise the high humidity’s side-effects in the air.

The perfect outfit for travelling in Australia during Summer

There are a few must-have garments that belong to your packing list for Australia. Here are my tips:

  • Shorts above the knee or just underneath. Choose some with multiple pockets. I have chosen these shorts with extra side-pockets of a light and breathable fabric. See them here .
  • A short sleeve-shirt or T-Shirt. I love the ones from Odlo ; they are the best for body comfort.
  • A wide-brim hat , I would suggest you get one in Australia as they are specially designed with an extension to protect your shoulders from the intense sun rays. Click on my favourite summer hat .

Read on to learn about the benefits of multi-functional wear.

What clothes to pack for Australia

I know how difficult it is to choose what to pack for Australia . Whether you travel to Australia, climate zones and weather conditions can change abruptly, even in peak summertime. So my best tip is to pack functional clothes that are multifunctional and can easily adjust to weather and temperature changes. Technical clothing that you can wear anywhere at all times.

Wear versatile travel clothes

Prefer functional clothing to jeans.

I love technical wear. It’s my favourite clothing for travel because of the ultra-lightweight. It allows you to stay dry; it adjusts to your body temperature; it keeps you dry and warm and comfortable with all-weather conditions. Most fabrics are technologically advanced; they are waterproof, breathable and moisture-wicking, i.e. they allow the body’s moisture to pass through.

Moreover, functional wear is easy-care and durable; you can wear technical clothing for years and years. When I am on the road, I use functional wear because of the highest comfort for travel, and I often wear travel clothes in everyday-life.

Choose clothing that allows the layering principle

This means trying to use a piece of garment in as many different situations. Either as a lower, a mid or an outer layer. I always pack these high comfort technical garments in my travel bag:

  • 3 singlets (light colours)
  • 3 T-Shirt  (light colours)
  • 1 long-sleeve shirt + 1 short-sleeve shirts
  • 2 fleece jumpers, one with sleeves and one without
  • 2 pairs of trousers (pants), 2 pair of shorts
  • 1 rain & wind jacket (foldable)
  • 1 waterproof jacket

What to wear in Australia during Winter

Australia is one of those countries where winter weather conditions can set in even in summer. Moreover, in most Australian regions, you get cool nights and warm days throughout the year. And one thing you must remember is that wind will be your travel companion, especially when you travel in coastal areas.

You should first pack for travelling in Australia during winter and summer too is rain and wind-jacket! I chose largely and can put an overlay on top of a fleece or a lighter jacket or shell.

Footwear – why 3 pair of shoes is the right number for travel

Footwear is essential when travelling in Australia as you will be walking a lot in all kind of weather and landscapes. You will constantly be outdoor. Therefore comfortable and suitable shoes are a must. The same principle is valid here. Pack possibly not more than 3 pairs of shoes that can be used in different situations. Like the example here below:

  • Technical Boots for outdoor activities, walking, hiking, in different environment+ climate.
  • Technical Sandals or sneakers for leisure activities, city walking.

Underwear and Sleepwear – discover multi-functional garments

You may think what? They are also essential garments as well as travel trousers, travel jackets and anything else. If you plan to be physically active in the outdoors, you need underwear that keeps you dry when you sweat.

Sleepwear is also essential, no matter what you use: either a pair of leggings and a top, a shirt or a pyjama. In Australia, temperatures drop dramatically in Outback areas and the forest. I tried to wear leggings and a top on my last trip, but it was no good in the Outback. I remember waking up feeling cold. In Melbourne, I discovered a functional Body Map that is ideal for running or using as a base layer. And then I turned my body map into a fantastic piece of travel sleepwear too.

Choose and pack travel wear with purpose

Make a list of things and outdoor activities planned and make a shortlist of categories along the time allocated. Here it is a simple example:

  • Outdoor 60%
  • Entertainment 20%
  • City Sightseeing 20%

This list will help you to identify what to pack for Australia quickly. It will also show you how to take advantage of multi-functional garments while combining clothing altogether and use them in different situations.

By choosing wisely what clothes to wear in Australia , it will be easy to know how to pack your luggage .

Finding a balance between choosing the right travel clothing and packing light is also crucial. While it takes time to create your packing ritual, travelling is the best way to put into practice ideas and develop new packing habits that work well and fit your travel style.

I’ve also put together this list of packing tips for Australia .

Pin it for later!

How To Plan A Trip To Australia

Pretraveller July 12, 2013 @ 9:09 am

Thanks for a great article. It is really important for visitors (and locals) to realise that Australia has many contrasting climates and seasons, so you DO actually need to bring warm clothes!

Winter (Jun – Aug) anywhere south of the Tropic of Capricorn gets really cold, and you will still need a jumper for night time in the northern parts of Australia. Summer mostly gets really hot, but I still have fond memories of almost getting hypothermia in Melbourne in mid-summer. The southern states have ‘changes’ which come through which can drop the daytime temperature significantly.

So the recommendation to pack good quality layers is a good one.

Rocky Travel July 15, 2013 @ 7:47 am

I agree. I experienced a sudden temperatures drop on Kangaroo Island in April. After a sunny, warm day, I got up the following day at 5°C. As bushwalking was planned, I was thankful to have packed high-quality outdoor wear to keep me warm. Nonetheless, my hands were ice-cold, and I could hardly take photos! I wish I could have worn warm gloves on that day!

Sarah July 16, 2013 @ 2:01 pm

Thanks a lot for this wonderful article. I really think these are useful tips. I will save them up to refer back when I travel to Australia next time.

Keith Kellett August 17, 2013 @ 10:42 am

Agree with all … but, most importantly, do not forget the hat!

Rocky Travel August 20, 2013 @ 12:27 pm

Oh Thanks for the hat, Keith! It’s really important in Australia, cheers!

Fernando May 19, 2014 @ 11:24 pm

Hello, great tips. what about wet suit ? its big and heavy should i pack that too? im planning on doing a lot of diving and surfing thanks

Rocky Travel May 23, 2014 @ 8:27 am

Hi Fernando! I would not pack a wet suit, as you will be able to hire it. However I don’t know the cost for hiring it. If you are just doing a diving/surfing holiday maybe it’s worth packing it, as the cost for hiring it sums up.

milly June 5, 2016 @ 9:12 pm

Keanah Finn July 30, 2017 @ 4:05 am

Flip flops is such a funny name for thongs. Australians wear thongs everywhere, no one worries about ‘infections’ what would be the point of them if we didn’t wear them to bathrooms, public transport etc. Otherwise great article!

My assumption about what to wear in Australia couldn’t have been further from the truth. It is no where near as laid back and casual as I thought it would be. Well, not everywhere.

Yes, Byron Bay and Surfer’s Paradise fit this stereotype – but Sydney? No way. Packing for Sydney is different than packing for other Australian cities. The same goes for The Outback and The Northern Territory.

Lucky for you we’ve got heaps of tips after living here! Find out what to pack for Australia year round!

What to Wear in Australia

Backpackers are so prevalent in Australia that as a local, you can almost sniff them out. Except you don’t need to–their clothes tend to give them away. So, what do you wear when you want to blend in with the locals? That’s what we’re going to explore in this guide.

Australia is quite obviously a huge country and so, the climate is varied. On the same day that people are shivering on the streets of Melbourne, the residents of Far North Queensland will be frolicking at the beach.

What to Wear in Australia: Sydney

Sydney has some of the best weather in the world, with hot summers and mild winters. Locals and travelers alike flock to the city’s famous beaches in the warmer months. In the winter, you can get away with wearing jeans and a t-shirt, with a light coat in the cool of the night.

what-to-wear-in-australia

Casual Chiffon Long Sleeve

Women in Sydney pride themselves on being well-dressed and healthy. In the early morning hours and late afternoon you’ll see Sydneysiders everywhere, jogging through the streets and sipping on green smoothies.

Planning to run when you travel? This running fanatic shares her go-to running clothes  to jog on the go!

what-to-wear-in-australia

Marly Flat Sandal

If you’re traveling to Syd in the warmer months, pack a few decent pairs of shorts, some nice tops, and a good pair of sandals for the day. And bring your hottest heels if you’re planning a night out.

I made the mistake of wearing flat sandals out for drinks one night by the Sydney Harbor. I felt very out of place when I realized I was the only woman in flat shoes in a sea of model-like women all wearing designer heels.

Public transportation is excellent in Sydney, so don’t worry about walking far in the city! Pull out your best stilettos for a night out in Sydney and don’t underestimate style when planning what to wear in Australia.

what-to-wear-in-australia

Striped Summer Beach Shorts

You’ll get a lot of wear out of a great pair of shorts – especially in the hot summer months.

Just remember what I said about dressing up in Sydney! Opt for a pair of dressy shorts with wedges when planning what to wear in Australia and leave the denim cut offs and rubber flip flops at home if you’re traveling in the city. The heat gets pretty intense here, so I’d pick a lightweight fabric for your shorts, and a pale color – like white or beige.

Tip:  The key to packing light is to c reate a travel capsule wardrobe which can easily fit into a carryon suitcase with the help of packing cubes !

what-to-wear-in-australia

Biker Leather Jacket | J.Crew Tee

Swap out most of the shorts for jeans or leggings in winter (I’d keep at least one pair on hand for the odd warm day), paired with some nice blouses or t-shirts and cardigans.

Ankle boots are always in fashion, as are short-skirted dresses with long sleeves. Bring a nice party dress and high heels for nights out on the town.

Heading to the spring races in Sydney? A fascinator is an absolute must!

In Sydney, who wears the best hair accessory is a bigger deal than which horse wins the race. Horse racing events are definitely more about the fashion than the horses – with women wearing gloves, hats and color-matching shoes with their designer dresses.

what-to-wear-in-australia

La Blanca One Piece Swimsuit

Of course, the city beaches are pretty spectacular, so don’t forget your bikini.

Suits from Amazon Swimwear are all the rage here, but any classic bikini with a few luxe touches will fit in perfectly. Accessorize your bikini with a matching Turkish towel – which are uber popular at hot-spots like Bondi Beach and Manly Beach.

what-to-wear-in-australia

Biker Leather Jacket | Leith Tank Dress

Just because Sydney has tons of amazing beaches doesn’t mean the dress code is “beach casual”.

I was shocked to discover the residents of Sydney tend to dress up more than other cities I’ve been to. Leave the casual clothes at home and put your best foot forward in high quality, fashionable clothes to fit in here. You can never be overdressed in Sydney – even when I think I’ll be overdressed I usually arrive to party feeling underdressed.

what-to-wear-in-australia

Blondo Villa Ankle Bootie

One thing to keep in mind is that it rains an awful lot in Sydney, in contrast to the popular belief of it being a constantly sun-soaked city. Be sure to pack an umbrella or light raincoat and a waterproof pair of shoes like these stylish leather boots.

It’s not uncommon to have a beautiful hot morning only to have hurricane-like rain come from no where around 5pm. Enjoy your sunny mornings at the beach, but throw a travel umbrella in your purse so you’re never caught off guard!

What to Wear in Australia: Melbourne

Melbourne is arguably the fashion capital of Australia, with the city’s inhabitants taking the content of their wardrobe very seriously. Summer wear in Melbourne is quite similar to that of Sydney’s–it’s in the winter months that the city really comes into its own.

what-to-wear-in-australia

Shop Sizes XS-4X:  J.Jill

In the shoulder seasons in particular, Melbourne can experience a range of weather, with temperatures changing in a matter of hours. The day can start off warm and sunny with a cold front hitting in the early afternoon before the city gets drenched in a deluge of rain. It’s best to be prepared for anything and everything.

Check out the easy packing solution for trips with both cold and hot climates!

what-to-wear-in-australia

Oversize Cotton Blend Sweater

The trick to surviving Melbourne’s temperamental temperatures is layering. Black is a popular color, with many women opting for skinny jeans or leggings.

Oversized sweaters with simple white linen shirts are popular in the winter, teamed with a brightly colored beanie. A scarf will be your best friend–you can keep it in your bag, whipping it out when the weather turns cool.

Read these tips on how to avoid boring all-black outfits  when you travel!

what-to-wear-in-australia

Timberland Sutherlin Bay Mid Back Zip Boot

It might seem tempting to wear canvas shoes, but they won’t be able to cope with the sudden changes in weather. I recommend a sturdy pair of boots (both my Timberlands and Doc Martens serve me well) or a pair of black or brown leather boots. Try to sway away from suede–it’ll get soaked within seconds.

Find out why leather boots are some of the best shoes for travel!

You’ll want a coat that is cute, practical, and goes with everything. I alternate between my black leather jacket and black wool coat, because once again, black goes with everything, darling

On a rainy day, I wear my bright yellow 66 °North raincoat. I figure that something of Icelandic design can probably withstand Melbourne’s weather and then some!

What to Wear in Australia: The Northern Territory

The Top End, also known as the Northern Territory, has what is probably the oddest weather of the entire country.

Towns like the capital of Darwin have only two seasons, known as the “Wet” and the “Dry”. The Dry is far more preferable and takes place in the winter months, from around May to September. Temperatures are usually around 70-89°F (21-32°C), which is quite similar to summer temperatures elsewhere in the country.

Whisper Cotton V-Neck Tank

In the summer, or the Wet–things get tropical. The Top End is ravaged by thunderstorms (and the odd cyclone). Humidity is high. You’ll start sweating the second you step outside.

Aussies who call this region home live in shorts, t-shirts, tank tops , and flip-flops (we call them “thongs”). Your best bet will be to avoid clothes with synthetic materials; stick to cotton.

If you’re visiting during the Wet (which is gorgeous, apart from the humidity) bring a change of clothes. You’ll find you’ll sweat through your t-shirt before you know it!

What to Wear in Australia: Tasmania

Tasmania’s climate is pretty close to that of Europe’s. Summer is mild and the winters are chilly. Snow is not uncommon in the cooler months.

Calvin Klein Chevron Packable Coat

I would pack similar clothes to that of Melbourne, with an emphasis on layering up, again. Bring a sturdy jacket , no matter which time of the year you choose to visit. In the winter, pack ALL your winter woolens!!

Icebreaker Oasis Longsleeve Crew

Start with a base layer of thermals (merino wool is warm and dry) and wear jeans or leggings and a long-sleeve t-shirt over the top. Consider packing a fleece and jacket, too. Accessorize with a beanie, gloves, and a warm scarf.

Enhance your basics with color and texture using these winter accessories  and find out why thermals are a must for traveling light (and staying warm) in winter!

Don’t forget to pack a sturdy pair of hiking boots, as Tasmania has some of nicest hikes in the country, patronized by travelers and locals alike.

What to Wear in Australia: The Outback

May through September is winter in Australia, and the prime time for visiting any of the sights in the Australian outback. The temperatures are quite nice during the day and tend to plummet at night. I wouldn’t advise visiting the outback during the summer months, unless you’re a big fan of searing heat, humidity, and flies.

The dead center of Australia is also known as the “Red Centre”. It’s home to two of the most famous sights of the country: Kata Tjuta (or “The Olgas”) and Uluru. Visitors to this region tend to stay on site in a small town known as Yulara, which was built for access to Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park. It features hotels at a range of different prices, as well as a hostel and a campsite.

During the day

Temperatures during the day in the Red Centre range around the high 60°s to low 70°s F (low 20°s C).

For this region, I recommend bringing several t-shirts, a long-sleeve shirt, leggings, a pair of jeans for the evening, and two pairs of shorts (one for exercise and one denim) in case the weather warms up in the middle of the day. A light sweatshirt might be needed during the day, too.

If you’re staying at a hotel in the nearby town of Yulara, bring your swimsuit in case you fancy a dip in the pool.

Here are the  best one-piece swimsuits  of the season!

When I did the Uluru Base Walk, I wore workout clothes–my normal joggers with Teeki leggings , which are made out of recycled plastic water bottles. (This pair  are certainly appropriate for a desert climate).

Dr. Martens Women’s Flora Leather Chelsea Boot

Bring a pair of boots with you. They don’t need to be hiking boots, as most of the walks around Kata Tjuta National Park are fairly tame. I brought my Doc Martens and was perfectly happy in them, day or night. I paired them with thick socks when the day cooled.

These are the best waterproof leather boots recommended by our readers!

If you have a pair of adventure sandals pack them, too. They come in very handy.

Occasionally water adventures require special shoes. Find out which water shoes to wear for which activities!

If you’re camping in the outback, you’ll be roughing it, but there are many opportunities to indulge in a little luxury here and there. This is mostly in the form of delicious dinners, where you may want to dress up a bit more.

In this instance, I’d wear jeans along with a nice shirt or blouse . It doesn’t have to be too fancy–this is the outback, after all.

Don’t forget to bring a coat. It doesn’t have to be of Nordic weather proportions, just ensure it will provide you with a little extra warmth on those cold summer nights.

From sporty to bold and colorful, find the most stylish and practical down jacket  for your cold weather travels!

what-to-wear-in-australia

Duofold Mid Weight Wicking Thermal Shirt

It may be surprising to hear that the outback can get quite cold at night. Ridiculously so–around 37°F / 5°C or lower once the sun has gone down!

The amount of clothing you bring should correlate with the type of accommodation you choose. All the hotels in Yulara are heated, with extra blankets available for those who like to snuggle up under their duvet. Bring along your winter pajamas (mine are a mixture of flannelette and thermals) and a pair of bed socks, just in case.

If you’re camping, I thoroughly recommend bringing not only a good pair of thermals (merino wool is the best fabric) and a fleece but your coziest sweatpants, too. You can wear them around the campsite and they’ll double up as pajamas at night.

General Australia Travel Essentials

what-to-wear-in-australia

Packable Sun Hat

  • A wide-brimmed hat . The Australian sun is particularly intense, especially in the desert regions.
  • Sunscreen . No matter the time of the year, be sure to pack at least SPF 30+ sunscreen for your face and slather it onto the rest of your person if you tend to burn easily.
  • Aloe vera gel . If you tend to burn, pack an “after sun” lotion to cool affected skin.
  • Skin moisturizer . Due to the harshness of the daytime sun and cold nights, you may find that your skin gets quite dry.
  • Panty liners or small packs of tissue. If you’re planning on hiking, you might want to bring along these items. These pantyliners  can be reused after washing.
  • Insect repellent . Insects aren’t as prevalent during the winter months, but bring along some repellent just in case you’re bothered by flies or other creepy crawlies during your outback adventure. Bushman’s is the best brand available in Australia.
  • A reusable water bottle . This will come in handy. You can fill it up at your hotel and take it with you on hikes and day trips.
  • Camera . It should go without saying! Empty your memory cards and bring additional batteries. This is an extremely photogenic corner of the world and you’ll want to start snapping away the moment you arrive.

what-to-wear-in-australia

Neutrogena Sunscreen

The most important packing tip is to bring and use sunscreen year round. I’m talking SPF 60+ here.

UV levels here are significantly higher than other areas of the world thanks to a hole in the ozone layer directly above the country. I can tell you that as a girl who previously lived in Spain and rarely wore sunscreen, the sun here is a killer. 20 minutes outside without sunscreen and I’m red as lobster. Pack your sunscreen!

If you’re planning on going to the beach (which I bet you are) use an organic sunscreen  to avoid spreading toxins into the ocean. It wouldn’t hurt to use a facial BB cream with some SPF, too.

Read these after-sun skincare tips to help you rejuvenate dull, dry skin!

what-to-wear-in-australia

Ray-ban55mm Polarized Sunglasses

Don’t forget your sunglasses either (they’re known as sunnies in Australia) and a sun hat!

Insect repellent will also serve you well, particularly in the summer months. Look for products that contain DEET –  this is one of my favorites !

What are the best accommodations in Australia?

We love  Airbnb for accommodation in Australia. Sign up here  for a free $40 credit!

I prefer to book “the entire home” instead of opting for shared accommodation on Airbnb. Aside from safety, I also like to feel like I’m living in the destination. It’s a small taste of local life plus you get more amenities than you would at a hotel such as a kitchen and washing machine.

Read these  Airbnb tips  for more info!

If you prefer the convenience and comfort of a hotel room, I like using both  Agoda.com  and  Hotels.com . Tip: Hotels.com gives you a free night for every ten nights you book!

For hostels, we recommend  Hostelworld  and  Hostelbookers . Always read the reviews before booking to get the best idea if the hostel is right for you. Some are quiet and family friendly while others are known for their party atmosphere.

Not sure about staying at a hostel?  Read this.

Thanks Alex. We are heading to Australia in March and will be visiting many different areas. This article gives me some great ideas to make my wardrobe comfortable and stylish. Thanks!

Going to Australia for a month is daunting enough. Thanks to this guide, I no longer stressed about being able to do this vacation with carry on luggage only. Thank you TFG!

Laura Verbeke

I discovered your website and haven’t stopped reading since 2014 when I was preparing for my first trip to Australia. Clearly, I’m a huge fan. Now, I’m visiting different Aussie cities during their Spring season. I’m still stuck on Melbourne clothes for Spring and a trip along the Great Ocean Road. Any suggestions?

Ariadne

They say Melbourne has four seasons in a day. Black is the locals go-to colour and the vibe is more European than Sydney – so think tailored. Layering is the key. Start with a packable rain jacket, light weight blazer, dressy jeans, a pretty dress that doubles with the blazer. Melbourne cup is a big deal, there are events nationwide. Dress to impress, including a fascinator. The Great ocean road is goegeous, but very windy in spring. Jeans, T-shirts, trainers, warm hoodie, packable rain jacket will see you through. You might be lucky and get a swim in late spring, but don’t pack just shorts, or you will regret it.

Jenny

What clothes and shoes do you suggest for winter in Brisbane beginning this last week of July to August?

Layna Schmitt

You are so right! The climates around Australia very so much. We are headed to Tasmania this Christmas and it’s all about layering. Trying to find a good but not bulky jacket to bring (even though it will be summer) the weather can be quite changeable there.

Sandra

Hi I was reading your blog and I wanted to correct you. There is no hole in the ozone layer above Australia. It has to do with the angle of the sun in relation to the earth as it orbits. In summer, Australia gets a lot of direct sunlight with long days and therefore it tends to be hot and you can get sunburned. Australians avoid being out in the sun without a hat, shirt, sunglasses and sunscreen during the middle of the day. BTW love your blog. I use it every time I travel to the northern hemisphere in our summer, your winter. It’s had to pack when winter here in Brisbane ranges from 7 to 21 deg C, and your going to somewhere where it actually gets cold.

Alex

Hi Sandra, thank you taking the time to share this with us and for your helpful advice. We always love hearing from a local ? So happy to hear you love the blog and that we have been able to help you with your packing! ❤️? Happy travels!!

Komal

What types of tops are suitable for visiting to melbourne

Hi Komal, it would depend on what time of the year you were traveling? In the fall months the temperature can change quickly so you might need a warmer top which you could layer for when it got chiller. In the winter are white linen shirt would work well which you could layer with a sweater. In the summer you could opt for a lightweight shirt or t-shirt. Hope this helps answer your question 🙂

Breezy

Great blog! Can you tell me what to wear in Southern Australia from summer to autumn (Feb to March)?

Alice

Great information shared and help me in my trip for Australia.

alex

Thanks Alice!

Alexia

Sydney used to be well dressed, 20 years ago. Not any more. Generally people don’t make much effort and anything and everything seems to be ok. A small number of women dress beautifully, most men do not. A tiny number of suburbs are stylish and are full of cafes and restaurants, the majority of Sydney is not like this. A few suburbs have beaches, most do not. Do not worry about how you dress for this city. As a Sydneysider it is really sad that style is virtually nonexistent. Melbourne style is world class and stylish dressing is everywhere.

Alexis

Sydney public transport is very erratic. Some inner city suburbs have excellent transport, the rest of Sydney is extremely lacking. Traveling by car is slow like being in a moving carpark, and parking is very expensive.

Thanks for the feedback Alexia! The authors of the article and I were impressed with the style on our trips but it’s interesting to know that it was once even more well dressed 🙂

Kate - Travel for Difference

It’s so funny to see foreigners try and pack for Australia – but you’re so spot on! It’s really not as laid back as so many people think (and no there aren’t any koalas wandering around the streets), a lot of the major cities are much fancier than what is often assumed. I think you’ve really hit the nail on the head X

Awesome Kate thank you for you feedback!

Jennifer Bradley

Just to add, you don’t need to pack loads of sunscreen or insect repellent – you can easily find both in shops from supermarkets to chemists. You’ll need the sunscreen all year round (higher SPF in summer), but insect only in summer. And although I live in Australia’s coldest city, I’ve never worn a down jacket anywhere, except to go skiing. So research place, as well as weather for each month – it varies. We just got back to Canberra after a month away and the weather ranged from -6’C to 35’C during that time – all in Australia.

Thanks for the feedback Jennifer!

Michelle B.

We are coming August 4th to Australia & New Zealand to do all the touristy things including bungee & snowskiing in New Zealand. HELP! I need to dress my 17- year old daughter & 19-year old son, husband & myself for 17-20 days. I’m certain that tourist bunny jumping and other things dictate different wardrobes. Possibly jeans will work daily???

Hi Michelle, I would highly recommend that you join our TFG facebook group and post any questions you have there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers that have the best advice and recommendations to share. I am sorry that I could not have been of more help. Hope you have an awesome trip! ?

Nice blog post about what to wear in Australia. The dresses and accessories are good enough for surfing on the beach.

Thanks Grace!

Thanks Catherine!

Sharon

This will come in very handy. Thx

Travel Fashion Girl

You’re welcome Sharon 🙂

Catherine

As a Sydneysider and TFG fan, I have to admit I disagree with some of the points made here. Sydney is pretty casual, and during summer there is a reason for that – it is simply too hot to overdress or dress up too much, with days and sometimes weeks consistently in the 85 degree Fahrenheit region, or about 30 degrees Celsius. Thongs or flip flops, particularly Havianas, are very popular, completely acceptable, and on some hot days at my workplace, the majority of people you see will be wearing thongs because your feet expand, closed in shoes are uncomfortable and, unlike other warm cities like Singapore or Bangkok, Sydney is an outdoor city so you are not constantly moving from one air-conditioned space to another. As for heels at night – this might be the case on a Saturday night, but for the most part flat shoes are absolutely fine. Many of us go from work to a bar or restaurant without having the opportunity to go home and change, so flat footwear is fine and will take you on your commute home.

I agree – we’re just back from a week in Sydney, where I did a lot of people watching. If you go to smart parties, maybe very high heels and fancy dresses are the go, but in summer, it’s usually too hot to get dressed up and hardly anybody does, unless they’re going to something high class. I saw shorts galore, (and some people shouldn’t have), short and long skirts, skimpy tops, kaftans, classy casual (especially at the opera house and galleries, although even at the opera house I saw shorts and thongs[flip/flops]) – and heels if they existed, were low or wedges. The dressiest garments I saw were sundresses.

Don’t ever forget the sunscreen – whatever the season – and a good sunhat helps. We did see some rain, but given the heat, it was very welcome.

Brooke Vlasich

As a lover of millinery, I am thrilled to see fascinators! I appreciate your knowledge about Sydney’s affinity for stylish clothes and the random downpours of rain since I hadn’t heard about those aspects yet. Thanks for a great informative post!

Thanks Brooke! I’m glad Kelly Ella Maz was nice enough to share her insightful tips!

Packing Tips for Clothing and Where to Find Stylish Travel Clothes That Are Designed and Made in Australia

The less you have to take with you when you travel, the better. Bringing more luggage will cost more if you are flying and make the trip much more crowded if you are driving. Either way, you can lighten your load with a few tips for efficient packing.

Think ahead

Before you pack anything, lay everything out on your bed and assess what you have. This strategy can keep you from accidentally packing two pairs of black flats or three white t-shirts. You can’t catch these mistakes if you pack as you go, so make sure and take the time to see everything all at once before you start placing them in your suitcase.

Choose lighter clothes

Bulky clothing will take up much more space in your luggage. Instead, go for thinner, lighter items, planning layers if it’s going to be chilly. For example, a Kathleen Berney cami and cardi is a better choice for travelling than a thick sweater. You can wear a lightweight sarong as a dress, skirt, shawl, swimsuit coverup, and more, making it a super versatile and easy-to-pack item to have.

Limit shoes

Shoes are space hogs, so scale yours back. All you need for most trips is one pair each of heels and flats. You can wear either one with dresses , pants, skirts, and even shorts. Place shoe heel-to-toe at the bottom of your suitcase or bag, filling them with socks or other small or fragile items to maximise space.

Wear bulky items on the plane

If you’re flying and you don’t have room for something you need, such as a bulky sweater or coat, wear it on the plane. You’ll save room in your luggage, and you’ll stay more comfortable if the plane is cold.

Pack for versatility

Many people make the mistake of packing a separate outfit for each day they’ll be away. However, you can pack much more lightly with a few interchangeable pieces. For example, you could choose a basic colour such as white, brown, or black, and plan to wear the same pair of pants with three different tops, or one jacket with several outfits. The beauty of Kathleen Berney’s easy-to-care-for clothing is that five minutes is all it takes to wash your pants and have them hanging over a chair or bathroom rail ready to wear the next morning.

Choose the fabric that is easy to travel with

Even if you feel fresh and energetic when you land, you won’t look it if your clothes are wrinkled. Look for wrinkle-resistant, quick-dry fabrics such as micro-fibres and washable silk. If you do make it to your destination only to find that your clothes have not escaped unwrinkled, try letting your outfit hang in the bathroom while you shower – the steam will help your clothes look as good as new.

After a recent two-week trip to Australia, I came back with a better idea of what I needed to pack—and what I didn’t. Your own Australia packing list will vary depending on how long you’re going, which part of this diverse country you’re visiting, and what time of year you’re traveling, but the following list of what to pack for Australia will give you a good start.

What to Pack for Australia: The Suitcase

Sturdy but lightweight, the Eagle Creek Expanse Carry-on has lockable zippers, a padded tablet sleeve, and heavy-duty wheels that are built to last.

What to Pack for Australia: The Personal Item

The Patagonia Atom Backpack is large enough to carry the essentials but small enough to comfortably use as a daypack on hikes or strolls around a city. Its materials are water-repellent and include recycled nylon and polyester.

What to Pack for Australia: In-Flight Essentials

  • Kindle or tablet : The flight to Australia is long , so you’ll want to keep yourself entertained with as many good books, movies, and games as you can manage.
  • Eye mask : Give yourself a chance to sleep by blocking out light from all the flickering screens around you.
  • Noise-canceling headphones : Playing your favorite tunes or podcasts can make that 14-hour flight a little more bearable.
  • Pashmina : A cozy travel scarf can keep you warm in a chilly aircraft cabin or serve as a substitute for that thin airplane blanket.
  • Eyedrops and saline nasal spray : Spending hours in an arid airplane cabin can dry out tired eyes and the mucous membranes in your nose; the latter can even make you more likely to catch a cold in flight .
  • Neck pillow : Bring the most comfortable option you have to catch some shuteye on the long flight to Oz.

What to Pack for Australia: Shoes

  • Comfortable walking shoes : Whether that means sneakers or slip-on loafers, comfortable walking shoes should be at the top of your Australia packing list.
  • Hiking shoes : If you’ll be spending much time exploring Australia’s many national parks and wilderness trails, you’ll want sturdy hiking shoes with good traction.
  • Flip-flops : These are a must if you’re planning any beach time during your Australia vacation.

What to Pack for Australia: The Jacket

  • Windbreaker or lightweight rain jacket : If you visit during the warmer months, you might not need much of a jacket at all for your trip to Australia, but it’s always a good idea to bring a lightweight option to protect yourself from rain or a chilly nighttime breeze.
  • Interchange jacket for men or women : For visits during cooler times of year, add one of these flexible three-in-one jackets to your Australia packing list. You can mix and match the layers of these coats to deal with just about any weather conditions.

What to Pack for Australia: Clothing

  • Jeans : These all-purpose pants are great for walking around cities.
  • Hiking pants : Lightweight, quick-drying pants are ideal for outdoor adventures.
  • Shorts : During the warmer months, shorts are a must-pack addition to your Australia packing list.
  • Layering T-shirts : Wear these as your only top layer in summer or as a base layer in cooler weather.
  • Lightweight sweatshirt : Consider one of these to wear over your base layer in fall or winter.
  • Compression socks : These Australia travel essentials can help prevent blood clots during those long transpacific flights.

What to Pack for Australia: Toiletries

  • Sunscreen : This is a must-pack no matter what time of year you’re visiting Australia. If you’ll be snorkeling or diving along the Great Barrier Reef, bring reef-safe sunscreen to protect the fragile coral.
  • Aloe gel : If sunburn strikes despite your precautions, soothe it with a cooling aloe gel.
  • Insect repellent : Fend off mosquitoes, biting flies, and ticks when you’re out in the Australian bush.
  • Over-the-counter medications : I don’t travel anywhere without a few basic medications, including a pain reliever , a remedy for an upset stomach , and an antihistamine . For an Australia trip, consider adding melatonin for jet lag.
  • First-aid kit : Consider packing a travel-size first-aid kit to deal with any minor scrapes or injuries.

What to Pack for Australia: The Purse

Travelon makes anti-theft purses in a variety of sizes, with features such as RFID-blocking pockets, slash-proof straps, and locking zippers.

What to Pack for Australia: Gadgets

  • Portable charger : Keep your phone, camera, and other devices charged on the go.
  • Universal adapter : This all-in-one adapter works in more than 150 countries, including Australia.

What to Pack for Australia: Accessories

  • Waterproof pouch : Protect your phone and other valuables when you’re in the ocean with this waterproof pouch.
  • Sun hat : Protect your skin and eyes from Australia’s relentless sun, especially in the Outback.
  • Sunglasses : Spending time at the beach or on the trails? Don’t forget your sunnies.
  • Reusable water bottle : This bottle rolls up for easy packing and is the perfect replacement for single-use plastic bottles while you travel.
  • Umbrella : This is especially useful in Australia’s rainier regions, including the northern parts of Queensland (especially around Cairns) and western Tasmania.

What to Pack for Australia (That I Didn’t)

  • Collapsible hiking poles : If you’ll be doing some hiking and you like having a pole or two for balance, throw this packable pair into your suitcase.
  • Bathing suit : I traveled at a cooler time of year, but swimwear is a must-pack if you’re visiting Australia in the warmer months.

What Not to Pack for Australia

Australian cultural is pretty informal, so you won’t need to dress up much for dinner. Leave your fancy clothes at home unless you’re traveling to Oz for a wedding or other formal occasion.

Travel + Lesiure / Madison Woiten

Having a travel wardrobe that offers the perfect ratio of style to comfort is always a bit of a balancing act to nail. Long days spent in tight quarters means that easy-to-style and comfortable-to-wear clothes are musts, especially if you don't want to start off your vacation looking like you just crawled out from under a rock in sloppy sweats.

Luckily, with Amazon's endless fashion options that marry function and coziness, you don’t have to choose. These handpicked travel clothes will have you looking and feeling your best as you navigate anything that the world and the airlines can throw at you. And it sure doesn’t hurt that, right now, you can pick up these men's travel outfit must-haves for under $60 . Scroll on, because your new travel wardrobe awaits.

Wrangler Men's Long-Sleeve Classic Woven Shirt

An all-around classic and reliable shirt, the Wrangler Long-Sleeve Classic Woven Shirt is built to last and to look good the whole time. Shoppers loved how the 100 percent cotton material resisted fading, shrinking, and fraying while still remaining light and breezy enough to be comfortable for summertime wearing. The generous fit also allows for easy layering should your destination forecast take a chilly turn.

Hanes Men's Ecosmart Fleece Sweatshirt

For ultimate coziness and quality, you can’t go wrong with a quintessential top like the Hanes Men's Ecosmart Fleece Sweatshirt . The longtime best-selling men's sweatshirt boasts plush, sturdy fleece that stays soft after multiple wears and washes, as well as double stitching at the neck and arms to increase durability. It also comes in 20-plus color options which, combined with that classic silhouette, makes for easy, versatile pairing with your favorite jeans, joggers, and slacks.

The Gym People Men's Fleece Deep Pocket Joggers

If, like me, you’re always paranoid about important stuff falling out of your pockets during travel, you’re sure to appreciate these deep pocket joggers. They're oversized side pockets ensure more than enough space for your everyday essentials, and the ribbed elastic waistband and tapered athletic design make for a super comfortable and sleek-looking fit that can be dressed up or down. Plus, they come in four different colors, as well as fleece-lined and unlined options to match your preference.

Flygo Men's Padded Puffer Vest

Want to stay warm while traveling but don’t want to wrestle with a bulky coat that takes up half of your bag space? The Flygo Padded Puffer Vest might be just the thing. It comes in a range of colors as well as three distinct styles depending on your preferred level of warmth. Shoppers loved the fit and toasty fleece lining, and mentioned that it’s perfect for travel as the multiple pockets allow you to safely stow your ID, wallet, and other important belongings. It’s already a whopping 40 percent off, but make sure to snag the on-site coupon for an additional five percent off.

Skechers Men's Relaxed Fit Braver Sneakers

A good pair of shoes can make or break a trip, and the Skechers Relaxed Fit Braver Sneakers will definitely make it. They’re super lightweight and supportive, and the air-cooled memory foam insoles will have you walking on — well, air. The bungee laces and easy, classic fit also mean that taking them on and off during airport security will be a breeze. But, the best part is that their suede panels and knit uppers give the everyday sneakers a dapper look, which means that you can get away with wearing them to dinner, shows, and other dressy occasions.

Champion Men's Classic T-Shirt

A great travel outfit starts with a great T-shirt, and works its way up. Comfortable, understated, and timeless (and not to mention 25 percent off), the Champion Men's Classic T-Shirt is the perfect base for your adventures, whether it's worn under layers for warmth or on its own with jeans and trousers for a casual look. Heck, it can even double as a pajama shirt in a pinch. It’s lightweight and the cotton blend is nice and breathable, plus it comes in 30 different color options so you can mix and match to your heart's content.

Van Heusen Men's Wrinkle-Free Long-Sleeve Button-Down Shirt

You shouldn’t have to sacrifice style for comfort when traveling, which is why we recommend packing the Van Heusen Men's Button-Down Shirt for your next trip. Available in six colors, the classically designed top creates an effortlessly, timeless look that suits any dress code, while the true-to-size fit and breathable cotton-polyester fabric blend will ensure that you feel just as good as you look. Not to mention a wrinkle-free design is always a plus for any frequent traveler.

Amazon Essentials Men's Straight-Fit Wrinkle-Resistant Chino Pants

There’s nothing quite like a good pair of chinos for a versatile travel piece. Whether you’re dressing for the airport, a casual day around a new town, or something a little bit more formal, these pants will fit the bill, and pair well with whatever is in your suitcase. Shoppers love the tailored look of the straight-fit cut and the feel and durability of the cotton blend material. The wrinkle-resistant fabric is also perfect for easy packing and wearing wherever you may be heading.

Jmierr Men's Long-Sleeve Shawl Collar Cardigan

It’s always a good idea to bring layers when traveling. Both so you have options when you get there, and so you don’t commit to one option as you alternately sweat and freeze your way through the multiple — multiple — different environments that come with the territory. This cardigan is perfect for jet-setting with its relaxed fit, sophisticated look, and lack of bulk that allows for easy removal and stowing. And, it has handy pockets to keep your daily essentials close by.

Coofandy Men's Short-Sleeve Wrinkle-Free Button-Down Shirt

Sleek, cool, and comfy, this short-sleeve number is ideal for when you want a more relaxed feel without sacrificing style points. The polyester-spandex blend is silky and wrinkle-resistant, making it a great, travel-ready option, and the 20-plus color options are just waiting to be paired with your go-to shorts, slacks, and jeans.

Libin Men's Stretch Golf Pants

Another great find from the travel pants department, these Libin Stretch Golf Pants don't need to be saved for the green. Their polished look makes them suitable for anything from a casual sightseeing day to a fancy dinner (and, of course, a round of golf). In their reviews, customers said that they’re “ ideal for travel ” due to their “lightweight, no-wrinkle fabric.” Available in eight colors, the moisture-wicking, ultra-stretchy fabric will have you looking sharp on and off the links. Make sure to snag that on-site coupon for an extra 10 percent off.

Swisswell Men's Polo T-Shirt

With a relaxed, active cut, performance fabric and over 20 style options, you definitely won’t regret bringing this versatile Swisswell polo along for the ride on your next trip. Apart from pairing well with any type of travel pants, the shirt's quality material won over reviewers, with one shopper highlighting that it’s “warm enough for chilly days and, yet, not too hot for spring or fall days.” The polyester-spandex blend is breathable, flexible, and perfect for active wear or just increased comfort during travel. Plus, you can grab an extra 10 percent off with the on-site coupon.
