When travelling the world on miles and points, is the CIBC Aventura program worth it?

CIBC-aventura-guide

When travelling the world on miles and points, is the CIBC Aventura program worth it? How does the Aventura program work? What’s an Aventura point worth? One way for me to find out was to apply for a credit card earning Aventura points and see what they could do. This review describes my experience and impressions of the program as it relates to funding travel.

Table of Contents

What is the CIBC Aventura program?

How are aventura points earned, can aventura points be converted to another program, how can aventura points be used, what’s an aventura point worth, 1. flexible travel reward, 2. flight rewards, 3. shopping with points, what’s to like about the cibc aventura program, shortcomings of the cibc aventura program.

CIBC Rewards is the in-house propriety program of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC). The reward currency is commonly referred to as Aventura points.

The CIBC Travel Rewards Centre is CIBC’s in-house travel portal. It’s operated by Merit Travel Group, an independent travel agency.

Aventura points are earned through credit card sign-up bonuses and everyday spending. Depending on the credit card, bonus points can be earned on promotions, bookings at the CIBC Travel Rewards Centre, and spending in accelerated earning categories such as groceries, gas, and dining. CIBC has ten Aventura-branded credit cards:

  • CIBC Aventura Visa Card
  • CIBC Aventura Gold Visa Card
  • CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Card
  • CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Privilege Card
  • CIBC Aventura Visa Card for Students
  • CIBC U.S. Dollar Aventura Gold Visa Card
  • CIBC Aventura Visa Card for Business
  • CIBC Aventura Visa Card for Business Plus
  • *CIBC Aventura World Elite MasterCard
  • *CIBC Aventura World MasterCard

*CIBC MasterCards are no longer available to new applicants.

Aventura points don’t expire if an Aventura-earning credit card account is in good standing. The primary cardholder can pool points by moving them from one Aventura-earning credit card account to another.

Contrary to what you might read on the internet or be told by a seller at an airport kiosk, Aventura points cannot be converted to Aeroplan (except in special circumstances). They were before CIBC co-branded Aeroplan cards were transferred to TD in 2014, when the ability to convert Aventura points to Aeroplan was discontinued. However, grandparenting protection remains in place for cardholders of three select cards held since before October 1, 2013:

  • CIBC Aventura World Elite MasterCard

Aventura points earned since then can be converted, if they have been moved to the card held before 2014. Conversion is at the rate of 1:1 and points can only be converted in increments of 10,000.

Aventura points can be redeemed for travel, gift cards, donations, merchandise, experiences, credit card statement credits, or contributions to various CIBC financial products.

As with most reward programs, travel purchases usually return the best value. On most travel redemptions, Aventura points are capable of a value anywhere between 1 and 2.2 CPP (cents per point). Most travel booked through CIBC’s in-house travel portal returns a value of 1 CPP. When booking ‘Flight Rewards’ using CIBC’s Aventura Flight Rewards Chart, some redemptions offer a return of up to 2.2 CPP in value.

Credit Card Genius has calculated the value of Aventura points when redeemed for purposes other than travel. For example, charitable donations are valued at 1 CPP, CIBC financial products and statement credits at 0.83 CPP, gift cards at 0.71 CPP, and merchandise at an average of 0.71 CPP.

Occasional promotions on gift cards can return a redemption value of 1 CPP.

How to use Aventura points for travel

There are three ways to redeem Aventura points for travel.

A ‘Flexible Travel Reward’ applies to online bookings for flights via the ‘Flex Travel’ option on the Aventura Flight Rewards Chart or through online or telephone bookings at the CIBC Travel Rewards Centre.

CIBC’s-online-travel-search

Unless there is a promotion in effect, this option returns a value of one cent per point, considered the baseline value for most proprietary reward programs’ travel purchases.

Redeeming a Flexible Travel Reward involves booking through the CIBC Travel Rewards Centre and applying points to the purchase. It doesn’t apply to bookings through other suppliers.

Check for promotions in effect at the CIBC Rewards site. In the past, there have been auctions, accelerated earning rates on travel bookings, and flights for fewer points.

CIBC-aventura-flight-promotion-porter-airlines

Flight Rewards are based on the Aventura Flight Rewards Chart for round-trip flights in various cabin classes, from basic economy to first class. Each group of regionally based destinations displays a sliding scale of points required for flights with a maximum base ticket price. The base ticket price is exclusive of taxes and other charges.

CIBC’s-aventura-flight-rewards-chart

A greater value (than one cent per point) is possible with these redemptions the closer the cost of a flight is to the maximum ticket price listed on the chart. For example, the Canada and US (Long-Haul) travel region category shows a maximum ticket price of $800.  Paying 35,000 points for a ticket with a base fare of $800 returns a value of 2.2 cents per point.

In the following example, a return flight in premium economy from Toronto to Los Angeles costs 35,000 Aventura points plus $194.07 in taxes and fees using the Flight Rewards option. Taxes and fees can be paid in any combination of points (at a value of one cent per point) and cash (charged to a credit card). If the traveller pays in points, the total would be 54,407.

aventura-toronto-la-flight-example

In the same example, the Flex Travel option (at a value of one cent per point) shows a base fare of $744 for a total cost of $938, including taxes and other charges or 93,807 Aventura points.

aventura-price-toronto-la-example

By choosing the Flight Rewards option in this example, the traveller has achieved a value of 2.1 cents per point on the base fare and saved 39,400 Aventura points compared to the Flex Travel option.

Any excess cost over the maximum ticket price can be paid for in cash or points (at a fixed value of one cent per point). As shown in the following example of a round-trip business class flight from Vancouver to Calgary, the excess appears as ‘OVERMAX’ in the search results.

CIBC’s-aventura-vancouver-calgary-example

The Aventura cardholder must have at least 80% of the points required to obtain the desired flight, and tickets are non-refundable unless advised otherwise. As the CIBC Travel Rewards Centre is the booking agent, any irregularities related to flight cancellations or ticketing errors will require their intervention, as opposed to the airline. Such is the dilemma of travellers who use third-party booking agencies.

‘Shopping with Points’ involves booking through vendors other than the CIBC Travel Rewards Centre. However, the rate of 8,000 points on each $50 purchase works out to an abysmal value of 0.625 cents per point. A 2022 promotion (extended to March 31, 2024) doubled the value of 8,000 points to $100, or 1.25 cents per point.

CIBC’s-shopping-with-points-50-per-cent-promotion

Redeeming points for travel purchases using the Shopping with Points option involves the following steps:

Make a travel purchase such as a flight, vacation package, cruise, hotel stay, or car rental at a vendor of your choice using a credit card earning Aventura points. The charge must be in Canadian dollars.

Log into CIBC online banking (or mobile banking) and search for the transaction under ‘Pending’ in your transaction history. Chances are the charge will appear as soon as the booking has been confirmed. However, it could take a few days to post, so keep checking back.

aventura-shopping-with-points-charge-pending

Click on ‘Redeem with Points’ (the link to redeem with points needs to be active on the transaction). If it’s an eligible travel purchase, the required points will automatically be reduced by 50% under the current promotion. If the redemption is successful, confirmation will immediately appear within the credit card account.

aventura-redemption-successful-shopping-with-points

The credit will be posted to the respective credit card account within two business days.

aventura-travel-redemption-refund

This redemption option is only available while the purchase is still pending. The Shopping with Points Terms and Conditions state that it’s non-refundable, non-exchangeable, and non-transferable. Therefore, making a refundable booking with the vendor is always preferable. Many miles-and-points enthusiasts turn Aventura points into cash with refundable bookings. With the current elevated Shopping with Points promotion, it’s a viable strategy to consider if you have no travel bookings planned before the March 2024 deadline.

  • Depending on the credit card, CIBC offers travel perks such as lounge access through the Visa Airport Companion Program membership and passes, NEXUS fee rebates, and an attractive Mobile Device Insurance benefit.

For more information on the NEXUS program, see Is a NEXUS card worth it? and How to apply for a NEXUS card .

  • There are regular first-year-free promotions where the annual fee is waived for the first year. Many come with improved sign-up bonuses. In addition, it pays to check rebate and affiliate sites such as Great Canadian Rebates for elevated sign-up bonuses when applying through their portal.
  • It’s possible to hold more than one credit card of the same type (e.g., more than one Aventura Visa Infinite) at the same time. CIBC can be quite generous with approvals.
  • CIBC is more likely than other banks to waive the annual fee on request. It may also be possible to obtain a prorated annual fee refund when cancelling or product switching a credit card.
  • The redemption value of a ‘penny a point’ is easy to understand. The system calculates the exact amount with no sliding scale or topping upwards. My one-way flight from Cairns to Brisbane on Virgin Australia cost $129.08, translating into a precise redemption of 12,908 Aventura points.
  • There’s a no-fee card in the Aventura family (CIBC Aventura Visa Card). Applying for, or product switching to the no-fee card, can help preserve a relationship with CIBC. It can also serve a useful purpose by protecting existing Aventura points in an account between applications for other cards.  However, partial redemptions (part points, part cash) offer the means to use all Aventura points with no ‘orphan points’ remaining in an account.
  • Aventura points can be transferred from one account to another in the Aventura family. This applies to accounts held by the same cardholder. The process is efficient and instantaneous. For holders of the CIBC Visa Infinite Privilege card, it can be done online. For cardholders of other cards, contact the CIBC Rewards Centre to execute the transfer. Unlike TD Rewards, where a minimum of 10,000 points can be transferred, any number of points can be moved from one account to another.

For more information on the TD Rewards program, see When travelling the world of miles and points, is the TD Rewards program worth it?

  • Online bookings are limited. For example, online flight searches are limited to those originating in Canada or the USA. Calling the Travel Rewards Centre is inconvenient and can be costly when trying to make a booking from another country.
  • The Aventura Flight Rewards Chart applies to return flights. One-way flights can only be redeemed as a ‘Flexible Travel Reward’ at a value of one cent per point.
  • Rewards are non-refundable, non-exchangeable, and non-transferable. With the exception of refundable bookings with vendors where the pending charge is redeemed with points, there are no refunds on any travel purchased with Aventura points.
  • Hotel prices at the CIBC Travel Rewards Centre can be seriously inflated. For a booking via Expedia and redeemed using ‘Shopping with points,’ I paid $373 for a two-night stay at a Halifax hotel. The same hotel with the same dates at the CIBC Travel Rewards Centre, researched within minutes of each other, revealed a cost of $515.

future-inn-halifax-expedia

  • Other than redeeming points while a charge is pending, there’s no post-purchase option to redeem points against existing reservations or previous travel purchases.

The inability to convert Aventura points to other programs makes them less valuable than reward currencies such as AMEX Membership Rewards and RBC Avion Rewards, which can be converted to reward programs where it’s possible to extract much greater value.

Aventura points can be a beneficial reward currency in a diversified miles-and-points portfolio. When viewed as a secondary program along with, for example, TD Rewards and Scene+, they can reduce travel costs by funding miscellaneous travel expenses. These include train and ferry tickets, boutique hotel stays, flights with regional airlines, tours, and various travel experiences.

CIBC is to be congratulated on the current promotion with an elevated redemption value through Shopping with Points. Hopefully, the promotion will be extended beyond March 2024 and become a standard feature of the program.

Money We Have

  • $139 annual fee – First year free
  • 15,000 Aventura points when you make your first purchase
  • 20,000 Aventura points when you spend $3,000 in the first 4 months
  • 25,000 Aventura points when you spend $6,000 in the first 4 months

  • Earn 1.5 points per $1 spent on gas, grocery, and drug store purchases
  • Earn 1 points per $1 spent on all other purchases
  • Visa Airport Companion Program membership and 4 free annual passes

The CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Card is CIBC’s top CIBC Rewards credit card. There’s typically no annual fee and the welcome bonus is usually worth about 35,000 points. That means you’re getting at least $350 in value for free. Plus, you get a Priority Pass / DragonPass Membership with 4 free complimentary visits each yea, a NEXUS application fee rebate, travel insurance, and mobile device insurance. There’s a lot to like about this card.

As for the earn rate, you’ll get 2 points per $1 spent on CIBC travel; 1.5 points per $1 spent on eligible gas stations, grocery stores, and drug stores ; and 1 point per $1 on everything else including dining and entertainment.

You also get a decent amount of insurance coverage with this card. That includes travel insurance. mobile device insurance, and extended warranty. Even though there’s a yearly fee of $139, the first year is usually free. That said, there is an annual income requirement of $60,000 or a household income of $100,000 to qualify for this card.

Final thoughts

Although not as popular as some of the bank travel rewards programs, CIBC Rewards is pretty good. Points are easy to accumulate and you can use them with no blackout dates. The fixed travel schedule allows you to get more value out of your points, so maximize it if you can.

Well, my review of CIBC Rewards Points is overwhelmingly negative. You’d be extremely lucky to find anything close to a saving of $228 for a 10,000-pt redemption, especially if your destination is outside Canada. Even if you can find flights that work schedule-wise (I almost always didn’t), you can’t book any flights with an origin outside of North America and only economy fares – and you sometimes can’t get anything but the rock-bottom economy fare on a Westjet flight. I switched to the Scotia Passport VISA Infinite to get something more like a cash-back card (redeem 10,000 points for $100 rebates on past travel purchases on the card) that gives me 2 more lounge visits per year and no transaction fees on foreign currency purchases. No more frustrations!!

Thanks for this helpful post, Barry. The points are not bad, but I found the hotel redemptions to be pretty pitiful in Japan (even with using the Expedia trick). You will have much better luck using the points in North America. Way more hotels to choose from.

Now that our travels are grounded, I’ll have to look into other ways to use the points up. Thanks for listing the other redemption options.

There is absolutely some good value to be extracted from CIBC rewards. Your comment about gift cards reminded me about a recent promo where you could purchase gift cards at 1cpp with a certain retailer and then purchase other gift cards in store with those gift cards to open up even more options.

Might not be the best value, but I find it depends on what fits your life best!

The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce is the result of a 1961 merger between the Canadian Bank of Commerce and the Imperial Bank of Canada. The Canadian Bank of Commerce traces its roots all the way back to 1867, founded to compete against the Bank of Montreal. The Imperial Bank of Canada’s history, likewise, is nearly as long. Founded in Toronto in 1875, the Imperial Bank of Canada steadily grew until finally merging to create the bank commonly known today as CIBC.

CIBC is another of Canada’s Big Five banks, managing over $650 billion in assets and employing more than 40,000 people to serve 11 million customers worldwide. Like its competitors, CIBC also offers a flexible credit card loyalty program that can prove quite valuable in the right scenario. So, keep reading to learn all about the CIBC rewards program and how you can make it work for you.

CIBC Rewards Overview

Like the other big banks’ credit card rewards programs that we’ve looked at thus far, CIBC’s rewards program likewise rewards customers for making purchases with their CIBC-issued credit cards . CIBC awards each cardholder points based on the value of their purchase, and those points can be redeemed for a variety of rewards such as travel, gift cards, merchandise, CIBC financial products, statement credits, and charitable donations.

In the following sections, we’ll summarize the best ways to make the CIBC rewards program work for you, allowing you to maximize the number of points you earn and the value of those points when they’re redeemed.

How to earn CIBC rewards

Earning CIBC rewards points works the same way as earning rewards points in other programs that we’ve looked at. CIBC credit cardholders simply use their credit cards to make purchases, and they then receive points based on the value of that purchase and the terms of their specific credit card.

A customer must, of course, have a CIBC credit card in the first place before he or she can earn CIBC rewards point. As of this writing, CIBC offers five different rewards credit cards, each of which come with different features intended for a certain type of customer. We’ll summarize the key features of each CIBC rewards credit card below.

o  Suite of travel insurance products

As this summary shows, the CIBC Visa Infinite Privilege card offers by far the greatest benefits. But its $200,000 annual income requirement and steep $499 annual fee render it very exclusive and perhaps even impractical for many consumers. Further, there are other rewards credit cards that offer similar benefits for a lower annual fee.

However, CIBC’s second-tier card, the Visa Infinite , strikes a nice balance between cost and value. In other words, the Visa Infinite seems to provide more bang for your buck considering the relatively modest $120 annual fee. For this fee, cardholders still receive a host of valuable benefits including complimentary airport lounge access, a NEXUS fee waiver, a suite of travel insurance products, and the chance to earn 35,000 bonus points in the first year of membership.

Finally, CIBC’s basic Visa card allows cardholders to earn rewards points on purchases they would make anyway, although the 1 point per $2 spent ratio is a bit lower than comparable cards from CIBC’s competitors.

CIBC rewards points value

The real-world purchasing power of a CIBC rewards point varies depending upon the type of reward for which it is redeemed. Like other rewards programs we’ve seen, CIBC rewards points can be redeemed for various types of rewards including travel, merchandise, and gift cards. Similarly, CIBC rewards points are most valuable when redeemed for airline tickets and least valuable when redeemed for statement credits.

How to redeem CIBC rewards points

Members redeem their CIBC rewards points, as you can probably guess by now, through their online banking account. From their online portal, members can redeem their points for travel through the CIBC Rewards Travel Centre, for merchandise and gift cards through CIBC’s rewards catalogue, and as a form of cash back by applying points to receive a statement credit.

The following sections will set out the approximate value of a CIBC rewards point when redeemed for each class of reward.

  • Redeem CIBC rewards points for travel

There seems to be a split among the various credit cards rewards programs when it comes to redeeming points for travel. Some programs that we’ve seen allow members to make a point-for-point redemption regardless of destination. In other words, a rewards member in such a program simply redeems however many points are necessary to cover the exact price of a ticket.

Other programs, by contrast, allow members to redeem a set number of points for any ticket up to a certain price. CIBC, as we’ll see, essentially provides customers access to both options.

To redeem points for travel, CIBC rewards members have two options. First, they can book travel using rewards points directly through the CIBC Rewards Travel Centre. When booked this way, members may redeem a set number of points to book any flight within a certain geographic region, provided the base ticket price does not exceed a predetermined maximum.

The various travel tiers are set out below

–    Canadian Short Haul flights

o  10,000 to 20,000 points

o  Book any flight within a province, territory, or US or to an adjoining province, territory or state

o  Maximum ticket price of $400

–    Canadian Long Haul flights

o  25,000 to 35,000 points

o  Book any flight to any location within Canada or the continental United States

o  Maximum ticket price of $800

–    Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, Central America, Caribbean

o  40,000 to 60,000 points

o  Book any flight to any location in these five regions

o  Maximum ticket price of $1,000

–    Europe

o  50,000 to 70,000 points

o  Book any flight from a major gateway in Canada or the United States to select European destinations

o  Maximum ticket price of $1,300

–    The rest of the world

o  75,000 to 125,000 points

o  Book any flight from a major gateway in Canada or the United States to select destinations in Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific, the Middle East, or South America

o  Maximum ticket price of $2,000

These figures indicate the best value is the Canadian Long Haul flight. Assuming a member books an $800 ticket for 35,000 points, this comes out to a value of 2.28¢ per point ($800/35,000 = 2.28).

Using the same method, we can determine points max out at the following values for each of the remaining classes of flights:

–    Canadian Short Haul: 2¢ per point

–    Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, Central America, Caribbean: 1.67¢ per point

–    Europe: 1.8¢ per point

–    The rest of the world: 1.6¢ per point

As an added benefit to CIBC rewards members, if a particular flight doesn’t fit within any of the above travel tiers, members can still use CIBC rewards points to pay for the flight as long as it’s booked through the CIBC Rewards Travel Centre. When booked this way, points have a flat value of 1¢ per point. In other words, members receive $1 toward the cost of the flight for every 100 points they redeem.

Redeem CIBC rewards points for gift cards and merchandise

CIBC rewards members can redeem their points for gift cards and merchandise from a variety of leading establishments through the CIBC Rewards Centre.

Gift cards typically cost around 7,000 points for a $50 gift card or 14,000 points for a $100 gift card. This works out to a value of .7¢ per point. And points redeemed for merchandise typically carry a similar value of around .7¢ per point.

Redeem CIBC rewards points for experience

CIBC rewards members can also redeem their points for a variety of exclusive experiences, including dining experiences, vacations, tours, and more. But CIBC puts a unique spin on how they allow members to redeem points for experiences. Instead of pricing each experience at a set number of points, CIBC auctions each experience. In this way, members use their points to bid on the experience they wish to purchase. The highest bid wins!

Other redemption options

Other options to redeem CIBC rewards points include statement credits, CIBC financial products like an RRSP or TFSA , payments on a CIBC line of credit, and making a donation to charity.

For 12,000 points, members can make a $100 payment toward any CIBC financial product. This works out to a value of .83¢ per point.

For 2,500 points, members can make a $25 donation to CanadaHelps.org, coming to a value of 1¢ per point.

And for 4,000 points, members can receive a $25 statement credit. Redeeming points for statement credit works out to just .62¢ per point. Still, if you don’t have any travel plans coming up, this provides a convenient way to make a dent in your next billing statement.

Getting the Most Out of Your CIBC rewards

As we’ve shown, the best way to get the most value for each reward point is to use points to book long haul flights within Canada or the continental United States. Working out to about 2.3¢ per point, points put toward domestic long-haul flights are worth nearly four times as much as points redeemed for statement credit and around 35% more than points used to book international flights. And at 2¢ per point, using points to book domestic short haul flights is nearly as good as a deal.

How CIBC rewards Compare to other loyalty program

The CIBC rewards program is quite similar to others that we’ve seen. For current CIBC customers, especially high net-worth customers in the market for a premium credit card, the CIBC Visa Infinite Privilege offers a wide array of benefits for the frequent traveler. The second-tier Visa Infinite card, too, offers many of the same enticing and useful benefits for a much more reasonable annual fee. In any event, CBIC rewards points are quite value when redeemed for either short or long domestic flights.

  • Pros and Cons

Ultimately, the flexibility that the CIBC rewards program provides by allowing customers to book any flight through the CIBC Rewards Travel Centre could prove quite useful. And points become even more valuable when a member’s desired flight falls within one of the pre-set travel tiers.

On the flip side, members are constrained by the fact that CIBC rewards points can only be redeemed for travel though the CIBC Rewards Travel Centre. While at least one other rewards program allows members to book any travel they desire, then apply points toward the cost of that travel, CIBC members don’t have that luxury. But in return, CIBC rewards points can ultimately provide more value when applied toward certain flights.

What sets the CIBC rewards program apart from its competition is its relatively generous sign-on bonuses. With the potential to earn up to 35,000 bonus points in the first year of membership, cardholders could easily score a free flight or two simply by signing up for a CIBC rewards credit card and meeting the bonus criteria. So, if you don’t currently have a rewards credit card, CIBC’s Visa Infinite or Visa Infinite Privilege could be the perfect card to, both physically and financially, get you where you want go.

How to Maximize the CIBC Aventura Airline Rewards Chart

CIBC Aventura is the flagship travel rewards program by the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, and Aventura Points can be earned through CIBC’s Aventura-branded credit cards.

Aventura Points can be redeemed for gift cards, purchases, hotels, car rentals, and more, but the most valuable redemptions can be found by using the Aventura Flight Rewards Chart to book flights.

In this guide, we’ll go over the details of the Aventura Flight Rewards Chart, the steps for booking a flight, and how to redeem Aventura Points for maximum value.

What is the Aventura Flight Rewards Chart?

The Aventura Flight Rewards Chart provides the best option for redeeming Aventura Points if you’re looking to extract maximum value.

The Flight Rewards Chart provides a summary of the flight categories, the number of points necessary to redeem for that category, and the maximum base fare ticket value of the redemption flight.

A quick glance at the chart will give you a pretty good idea of how many points you’ll need to book a particular flight.

While you can redeem Aventura Points against travel purchases, you’ll end up getting a value of 1.25 cents per point (all figures in CAD) at most, under a promotion that runs until March 31, 2024.

cibc travel rewards hours

Meanwhile, with the Aventura Flight Rewards Chart, you can boost the value received up to 2.29 cents per point, depending on the flights booked.

As a reminder, you can earn Aventura Points  on CIBC’s suite of Aventura credit cards, which often come with a nice welcome bonus. The Aventura cards currently on offer from CIBC are:

How Does the CIBC Aventura Flight Rewards Chart Work?

The CIBC Aventura Flight Rewards Chart is composed of five categories that correspond to your flight’s origin and destination.

The number of Aventura Points required for a flight depends on a handful of variables, including where you’re flying to and from, the base fare cost of the ticket, and the dates of travel.

Regardless of which category your flight falls within, Aventura Points will only cover the base fare up to the maximum ticket price listed in the corresponding band; all other taxes and fees will need to be paid in cash or with points at a lower redemption value (1 cent per point).

For example, if you’d like to book a flight from Vancouver to Seattle, by referencing the first category band, you’ll see that you need to use 10,000–20,000 Aventura Points, which would cover up to a maximum base fare ticket price of $400.

If the ticket price exceeds the maximum base fare listed for the category (in this case $400), you’ll need to cover the difference either by charging your CIBC credit card or by redeeming Aventura Points at a baseline value of 1 cent per point.

The number of Aventura Points listed in the categories is for round-trip economy flights booked online through the CIBC Rewards Centre or by calling CIBC at 1-888-232-5656.

The Aventura Flight Rewards Chart

As mentioned above, the Aventura Flight Rewards Chart is composed of five categories that correspond to your flight origin and destination.

The first category is for short-haul flights, either within a Canadian province or US state, or between adjoining provinces and/or US states.

For these itineraries, it’ll cost 10,000–20,000 Aventura Points for a round-trip economy ticket, with a maximum base fare price of $400.

The highest value that we’ve seen for flights booked within this category is 2 cents per point, which is based on maxing out the base fare ticket price of $400 and redeeming 20,000 points.

It’s worth noting that the number of points required for a redemption tends to correlate with the cash value of the base fare. This means that the closer the base fare gets to the maximum amount in each category, the more points you’re likely to need to redeem for that ticket.

Based on our research, and given the way the program and prices seem to be designed, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll find a ticket that both maxes out the base fare and is being offered at the lower end of the points range.

That being said, if you do find a ticket with these characteristics (i.e., a $400 base fare for only 10,000 Aventura Points), you should definitely consider scooping it up as it’s offering an uncharted value.

The second category in the Aventura Flight Rewards Chart is for long-haul domestic or transborder flights, which include flights from any location in Canada or the US to any other location in Canada or the US (excluding Alaska and Hawaii).

For these itineraries, it’ll cost 25,000–35,000 Aventura Points for a round-trip economy ticket, with a maximum ticket price of $800.

Within this category, the best redemption value you’re likely to find is 2.29 cents per point, which is calculated by maxing out the base fare ticket price of $800 and redeeming 35,000 points.

The third category is for longer-haul flights from any location in Canada or the US to Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska, Bermuda, Central America, or the Caribbean.

These itineraries will set you back between 40,000–60,000 Aventura Points for a round-trip economy ticket, with a maximum base fare price of $1,000.

Flights booked within this category offer a value of up to 1.7 cents per point based on a redemption of 60,000 Aventura Points for the $1,000 maxed out base fare price.

The fourth category is for flights to select destinations in Europe from a major gateway in Canada or the US.

Flights within this category range from 50,000 to 70,000 Aventura Points for a round-trip economy ticket, with a maximum ticket price of $1,300.

When booking a flight within this category, you can aim for a value of up to 1.9 cents per point, which assumes a maxed out base fare of $1,300 for a redemption of 70,000 points.

The fifth and final category is for flights from major gateways in Canada and the US to select destinations in Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific, the Middle East, and South America.

These itineraries cost between 75,000–125,000 Aventura Points for a round-trip economy ticket, with a maximum ticket price of $2,000.

Flights within this category have an upper value of 1.6 cents per point when you redeem 125,000 Aventura Points for a maxed out base fare of $2,000.

How to Book Award Tickets with the CIBC Aventura Flight Rewards Chart

Once you’ve got some Aventura Points  saved up, and you’re ready to book a flight, you’ll want to start by logging in to your CIBC Aventura account, either on the CIBC Rewards Centre website or through the CIBC banking app.

After logging in, select the “Travel” tab. This will take you to the travel search form.

In the travel search form, make sure that you select the flights category, and then enter your origin, destination, dates, and the number/type of passengers travelling. For cabin class, you’ll need to select economy to find eligible reward flights.

Once the fields have been completed, click the “Search Now” button.

The search results will list all the flights that are eligible for points redemptions in two columns.

The left-hand column shows the Flex travel options, and here you’ll find the cost of same flights using Aventura Points at a value of 1 cent per point, plus taxes.

In the Flight rewards column on the right, you’ll see a breakdown of the points required for the flight using the Aventura Flight Rewards Chart, plus the cost of the taxes.

Since we’re specifically looking to book a flight using the Aventura Flight Rewards Chart, let’s use the results on the right-hand column.

After you’ve found a flight within this column that suits your needs, select the flight by clicking “Continue.” This will take you to the passenger information and payment page.

This page contains the flight details and price summary, as well as forms to input traveller information and payment information. You’ll need to fill in the traveller information for each passenger.

For the payment information, you can choose to pay with a credit card, or if you have enough points left, you can pay the taxes using your points at a value of 1 cent per point.

It’s worth repeating here that this isn’t a particularly good value for your points, so we don’t typically recommend this option.

Once everything’s filled in, click the “Complete your purchase” button at the bottom, and you’re all set.

When it comes to booking reward tickets using the Aventura Flight Rewards Chart, there are a few things to keep in mind.

First, it’s important to know that in order to access the Rewards Chart flights, you’ll need to be booking a round-trip ticket, and your travel must begin in and return to the same city.

One-way, multi-city, and open-jaw fares are not eligible for the Rewards Chart rates but can be booked using Aventura Points at a rate of 1 cent per point within the Flex Travel category.

Secondly, although the Rewards Chart states that long-haul flights to Europe are to be booked out of major gateways, we’ve found some flights in this category flying out of smaller airports with connections through a larger hub.

When searching for flights, it’s worth checking your preferred airports first, just to see if there’s any availability that fits within the eligibility criteria.

Lastly, if the ticket you’d like to book is over the maximum base fare, it’ll be flagged in your search results with an “OVERMAX” notation, and the price details break down what’s covered by the Aventura Points and what’s not.

To book this flight, you’ll need to pay both the taxes and the difference between the actual base fare cost and the maximum base fare threshold listed in the booking category.

How to Maximize the Aventura Flight Rewards Chart

When it comes time to redeem your Aventura Points , you’ll want to make sure you’re getting the best value possible.

Here are some tips and tricks to ensure you’re using your Aventura Points to their fullest potential.

Use the Full Base Fare

As described above, your Aventura Points only cover the cost of a redemption ticket up to the maximum base fare ticket price listed in each category.

Therefore, to access the best possible value from your points, you’ll ideally want to book flights that come as close to that upper limit of this price as possible.

For example, if you’re booking a flight from Toronto to Los Angeles, you’d want to look for flights with a base fare of as close to $800 as possible to maximize the value of your points.

To better understand how this line of thinking works, let’s look at these three example itineraries based on the Rewards Chart’s second category, with reward flights ranging from 25,000–35,000 points:

In Option 1, the flight has a base fare of $280 and costs 26,600 Aventura Points. This exchange gives you a value of 1.1 cent per point.

In Option 2, the flight has a base fare of $446 and costs 32,500 Aventura Points. With this choice, you get a value of 1.4 cents per point.

Finally, in Option 3, the flight has a base fare of $740 and costs 35,000 Aventura Points. By getting as close to the $800 maximum for the cost of the base fare, the value of each point is now 2.1 cents, or almost double the value of the flight in the first example.

Now, this isn’t to say that you should find the most expensive flight just for the sake of it, but rather, if you find a flight near the maximum base fare, you can be certain that you’re extracting the best possible value.

To determine the base fare of a reward flight, you’ll want to look at the “Flex” travel column on the left-hand side of your reward flight search. In this column, select the “view price details” link.

You’ll now see a screen that shows the flight’s base fare per passenger, as well as the taxes per passenger. Using this information, you can determine the value of any rewards flight in the program.

Book Positioning Flights

When booking long-haul award flights with points, one reality is that you’re often limited to departing from and arriving in major cities.

Furthermore, more airlines fly to the United States than fly to Canada, so you may find yourself in a situation where you need to get from your location to a larger city in order to take advantage of another award flight.

In these cases, the CIBC Aventura Flight Rewards Chart can be a great way to bridge the gap.

For example, if you need to get from Montreal to New York City, you could redeem 10,000–20,000 Aventura Points , plus taxes, to get you there and back, allowing you to take advantage of awards sweet spots in other programs.

Leverage Flexibility

One of the best features of the CIBC Aventura Flight Rewards Chart is that you can book with any airline without worrying about blackout dates.

With some loyalty programs, your redemption options are limited to a specific number of award tickets that are bookable with points; however, with the Rewards Chart, that’s not the case.

The Aventura Flight Rewards Chart can be used to book any available flight regardless of dates or award availability.

This can be particularly useful if you’d like to travel on an airline that isn’t part of any alliance and is otherwise tricky to book with points.

For example, if you’d like to fly from Vancouver to Manila with Philippine Airlines, you can use your Aventura Points  to book an award flight that would be very difficult to obtain through another avenue.

The flexibility of Aventura Points can also be helpful for booking flights during busy times of year, such as March Break or Christmas.

Finally, you can also use your Aventura Points in tandem with other loyalty programs to help fly you and your travel companions.

Since the Aventura Flight Rewards Chart isn’t subject to the same availability issues as other loyalty programs, your Aventura Points can come in clutch in cases when you need more award seats than are showing available.

For example, suppose that you and your friend want to fly from Toronto to London with British Airways in economy class, but there’s only one seat available to book through British Airways Executive Club.

In such a case, you could book one passenger through Executive Club and then book the other passenger using Aventura Points via the Aventura Flight Rewards Chart.

The CIBC Aventura Flight Rewards Chart lets you redeem your Aventura Points for flights around the world.

By taking advantage of the flexibility of Aventura Points  and by aiming for award flights with higher base fare prices, you can maximize the value of the program.

Leverage the Aventura Flight Rewards Chart for short-haul positioning flights, for use in tandem with other loyalty program bookings, or for difficult-to-find fares, and take advantage of all that your Aventura Points have to offer.

The many benefits of travel credit cards

A credit card can help make any trip more enjoyable and hassle-free both while you’re on vacation and when you’re booking your trip. By taking advantage of points, benefits and safety precautions, a travel reward credit card can also earn you great perks like airline tickets, reduced bills for hotel stays, money toward vacation packages and more.

Travel credit card safety tips:

Take a backup credit card.  That way you have one card for daily use and another for emergencies. Leave all other credit cards and unnecessary wallet items at home. This way, you can continue to earn points and perks without risking the loss of other credit cards.

You don’t need to tell us if you plan on using your CIBC credit or debit cards while travelling. No matter where you are, CIBC’s fraud detection systems will protect your accounts from suspicious and unauthorized transactions. If we suspect fraud on your account, we’ll contact you via text message, email or an automated call. Please make sure your contact information is up-to-date on your CIBC Online Banking profile.

Keep your travel credit cards in separate, secure places. To avoid the possibility of both cards being stolen, store the emergency card in a hotel safe and the other securely on your person.

Get a chip credit card and (where available) authorize purchases with a PIN number. A PIN number will protect your travel reward credit card from unauthorized purchases better than your signature.

Travel reward credit card benefits

Earn points for everyday purchases.  The points you earn with your travel credit card can be redeemed for hotel reservations, rental cars, airplane tickets and other merchandise.

Plan trips with a personal travel agent.  Some travel rewards credit card companies will put you in contact with a travel agency to help you plan your itinerary.

Manage finances with exclusive online tools.  Credit card companies may give you access to online tools to help you better manage your finances so you can budget for more vacations.

Earn CIBC Aventura Points

CIBC lets you earn Aventura Points primarily through its credit cards. There are four CIBC Aventura credit cards: three CIBC Aventura credit cards for consumers and one for SMEs. You will find the details below.

The earning rate is quite simple: $1 spent = 1 Aventura Point earned .

Spending at gas stations, grocery stores and drugstores earns 1.5 Aventura Points for every dollar spent.

CIBC Rewards travel purchases earn 2 Aventura Points for every dollar spent.

CIBC Aventura credit cards such as the CIBC Aventura ® Visa Infinite* Card or the CIBC Aventura ® Gold Visa* Card offer you CIBC Aventura points as a sign-up bonus. The financial institution regularly runs First-Year Free offers .

Redeeming CIBC Aventura Points

We will not mention the redemption of Points for various products purchased through the CIBC Rewards portal because, as in other programs, this is an inferior use of Points.

You can redeem your points to purchase a flight .

The number of points varies depending on the destination: for example, a short-haul flight can range from 10,000 to 20,000 Aventura Points with a maximum value of $400. If you can get that kind of return (10,000 points for $400), you get a 4% return which is excellent.

These tickets apply to Economy class flights only.

Taxes are extra and must be paid in cash or at the rate of 100 Aventura Points = $1.

If you don’t have the necessary amount of Aventura Points, you can purchase additional points up to 20% of the amount needed. But as with other programs, the price – 3 cents a point – is not very attractive again.

Finally, it is possible to make a mixed purchase, point and cash, but the redemption rate is fixed: 100 points = $1. The 1% cash back rate is therefore restored.

Finally, you can redeem your Aventura points to reduce your credit card balance, but the rate is not very interesting: 4000 points for $25, which is a 0.6% return.

CIBC Costco Mastercard Review 2024: Avid Costco Shoppers Should Not Leave Home Without It

Updated: Mar 19, 2024, 9:04am

Fact Checked

Few no-annual-fee credit cards come with impressive earning potential, but the CIBC Costco Mastercard is an outlier. With an estimated earning potential of over $400 per year, CIBC’s starting Costco Mastercard can compete with other expensive cash-back cards.

Though the term “cash back” is a slight misnomer: Cardholders get a Costco-specific gift certificate that’s only usable in Canadian Costco warehouses—though Costco-frequenters may not see that as an issue for themselves, or their supply closets. And as we note below, the rewards might be more flexible than at first glance.

The no-annual-fee part of the Costco card is a bit misleading too, since you do have to hold a Costco membership to get the most benefit from this card—and those aren’t free.

Lacking a welcome bonus and having arguably lower-than-usual spending thresholds on gas and Costco.ca purchases, the card is not perfect. But, for Costco shoppers that want a card that rewards them for making use of Costco’s (typically) lower prices, it’s a great addition to their wallet.

  • No annual fee
  • $0 supplementary cardholder fee up to three cardholders
  • Earn 3% cash back on restaurant and Costco gas purchases
  • Cash back use limited to Costco warehouses only
  • Low annual spending reward limits
  • No welcome bonus

Table of Contents

Introduction, quick facts, cibc costco mastercard rewards, cibc costco mastercard benefits, how the cibc costco mastercard stacks up, methodology, is the cibc costco mastercard right for you.

  • Doubles as a Costco membership card, so you need less in your wallet
  • Send money abroad to over 120 countries with a $0 transfer fee
  • Add up to two additional cardholders at no cost
  • Cardholders can access CIBC’s Pace It Installment Plan with eligible Costco purchases, allowing them to spread payments at low interest rates over a fixed term
  • Earn 3% cash back on restaurant and Costco Gasoline purchases
  • Earn 2% cash back on non-Costco gas purchases and Costco.ca purchases
  • Earn 1% cash back on all other purchases including at Costco
  • Built-in mobile device insurance with $1,000 of coverage for devices purchased with the card
  • Purchase security insurance for 90 days after the eligible item’s purchase date
  • Extended warranty insurance, extending the manufacturer’s warranty on eligible items to a maximum of one additional year

One of two Costco Mastercards offered by CIBC, the CIBC Costco Mastercard comes with solid cash-back rewards in addition to easy-to-meet application requirements. To qualify, applicants need to make $15,000 in annual income and have a good or excellent credit score . They also need to have a valid and active Costco membership—a cost of approximately $60 plus tax.

Cardholders earn 3% cash back on all restaurant and Costco gas purchases, 2% on all other gas purchases and Costco.ca purchases and 1% on all other purchases. While all gas purchases are capped at an $5,000 threshold—after which fill-ups only earn 1% cash back—those are still decent numbers for a card with no annual fee.

Though the CIBC Costco Mastercard has decent earning potential given its lack of annual fee, the additional perks are around industry standard for no-annual-fee cards. Cardholders have access to purchase insurance for 90 days after an eligible purchase and extended warranty of up to one additional year.

One major drawback of the Costco-branded credit card is its redemption policy. Cash-back rewards are redeemed once per year in the form of a Costco gift certificate, which is only redeemable in a Canadian Costco warehouse—and does not include Costco.ca. Though that severely limits the cash-back use, Costco lovers will have no problem niching down at their favourite store.

As an added bonus, cardholders can access low-rate installment plans through CIBC’s Pace It Installment Plan Program. Large eligible purchases of over $100 at Costco or Costco.ca can be put on an fee-free installment plan with the following interest rates:

  • 6 months: 5.99%
  • 12 months: 6.99%
  • 24 months: 7.99%
  • Earn 3% cash back on all restaurant and Costco gas purchases
  • CIBC Costco Mastercard doubles as your Costco membership card

Earning Rewards

Like any other cash-back card, earning rewards with CIBC’s Costco Mastercard is simple. Purchases made at restaurants and at Costco gas stations earn 3% in cash back, other gas purchases and Costco.ca purchases earn 2% cash back and all other purchases earn 1%. Note that all gas purchases have an annual spending cap of $5,000, after which gas purchases—including those made at Costco—will only earn 1%. The same goes for Costco.ca purchases, which are capped up to $8,000 annually.

Redeeming Rewards

Redeeming your cash back is easy, but your spending locations are limited. Primary cardholders are given a Costco gift certificate each year equal to the cash-back amount they earned. This gift certificate can only be redeemed in Canadian Costco warehouses, which excludes Costco.ca.

That said, a number of cardholders have written on Reddit that they can redeem their gift certificate for any purchase and receive the remaining balance in cash at checkout. Forbes Advisor Canada has not verified these claims, but if true, the card’s redemption program has a lot more flexibility than at first glance.

If you’re a Costco Executive Member, you’ll earn even more cash back with CIBC’s Costco Mastercard. Executive Members also earn a 2% annual certificate each year, up to a maximum of $1,000, based on their purchases of eligible items. CIBC’s gift certificate is a separate reward that could come at a different time of the year, depending on when you first signed up for your Executive Membership. But, the Executive Membership is not cheap, coming in at $120 per year—double the price of a standard membership. Still, the potential for two gift certificates as an Executive Costco member who also holds this credit card is a nice added bonus for what you’d be paying.

Readers should note that Costco’s website states explicitly that their similar reward certificate to the CIBC Costco Mastercard—the Executive Member annual 2% certificate, for example—cannot be exchanged for cash in-store.

Rewards Potential

Depending on your spending habits and how diligently you fuel up at Costco, this card has impressive earning potential for no annual fee .

Forbes Advisor Canada estimates that based on average Canadian consumer spending habits, cardholders could earn a net cash back of up to $422.58 each year. That kind of cash back rivals the BMO CashBack World Elite Mastercard , which made our list of best Cash Back Cards in Canada . The card itself is only limited by the caps on the highest earn rates it offers and the fact that the cash back you receive cannot be spent anywhere other than Costco.

  • Add two additional cardholders at no cost: CIBC’s Costco Mastercard allows for three authorized users with no annual fee for each of them.
  • No rewards cap on restaurant purchases: All purchases made with the card at eligible restaurants earn 3% cash back—with no annual spending cap.
  • Mobile device coverage: Cardholders can get up to $1,000 in repair or replacement coverage for a mobile device purchased with their CIBC Costco Mastercard.
  • Pace your purchases: CIBC Costco Mastercard holders have access to special interest rates using CIBC’s Pace It Installment Plan on Costco and Costco.ca purchases.

Interest Rates

  • Regular APR Min: 20.75%
  • Cash Advance APR: 22.49% (21.99% for Quebec residents)
  • Balance Transfer APR: Undisclosed
  • Cash Advance Fee: $5 within Canada, $7.50 outside Canada
  • Balance Transfer Fee: Undisclosed
  • Foreign Transaction Fee: 2.5%
  • Annual Fee: $0
  • Overlimit fee: $29
  • Dishonoured cheque/insufficient balance transfer fee: $40
  • Account maintenance fee: $10
  • Dishonoured payment fee: $42

CIBC Costco Mastercard vs. PC Financial Mastercard

Compared to CIBC’s offering, the PC Financial Mastercard has a slightly different schema with solid earning potential. Rather than earning cash back, PC cardholders earn 10 PC Optimum points per dollar spent on purchases made in Loblaw-owned stores, 30 points per one litre of fuel at Esso and Mobil gas stations and 10 points per dollar spent on all other purchases. With 10 PC Optimum points equaling one dollar in cash, the card has similar earning rates for Costco cardholders that shop in Loblaw-owned stores. But, CIBC’s card gas earning are based on per-dollars spent, not litres used, so cardholders will notice a difference with gas prices being as high as they are.

The PC Financial Mastercard also has a brand-only redemption process, as PC points can only be redeemed in Loblaw-owned stores.

Though identical in the lack of annual fees, that’s where the similarities stop. CIBC’s Costco card jumps ahead of PC’s in terms of earning power, earning approximately $130 more per year according to our research. Additionally, CIBC’s offering comes with extended warranty and purchase protection perks that PC’s card lacks. That said, the PC Financial Mastercard has a small welcome bonus of 20,000 PC points—valued at $20.

CIBC Costco Mastercard vs. Walmart Rewards Mastercard

Similar to CIBC’s Costco card, the Walmart Rewards Mastercard earns brand-specific cash back. This time it comes in the form of Walmart Reward Dollars at a rate of 1.25% on Walmart in-store and Walmart.ca purchases—and 1% in rewards for all other purchases. Those earn rates are also similar to CIBC’s Costco card, with Costco purchases earning 1% cash back, but CIBC’s card has better cash-back rewards on non-branded purchases, such as gas and restaurant buys.

Because of the greater earning rates of the CIBC card it comes well ahead of Walmart’s offering in terms of earning potential. Walmart’s Mastercard earns just over $300, which is $120 less than the CIBC Costco Mastercard. Sure, both cards come with helpful installment plans for consumers looking to make strategic purchase decisions.

CIBC Costco Mastercard vs. Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard

It’s well known that Amazon is the largest online retailer, and shoppers that use Amazon for all of their essentials would be well-served to use the Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard. Amazon cardholders pay no annual fee, earn 1.5% in Amazon points on eligible Amazon.ca and Whole Foods purchases, with all other purchases earning 1% back. The Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard also comes with a $65 Amazon Gift Card on approval and 5% back on eligible Amazon.ca purchases, restaurant purchases and Whole Foods stores and other grocery stores in the first six months—up to $3,000. That’s a total welcome bonus of over $200 in value.

To top it off, Amazon’s card earns nearly the exact same as CIBC’s, not including the welcome bonus. Amazon’s card also comes with rental car insurance , lost baggage assistance and ticket replacement assistance—perks that CIBC’s offering does not have. Because of these factors, Amazon’s card is a better pick for those that spend a lot of time, and money, on Amazon.ca.

When determining a rating for individual credit cards, the Forbes Advisor Canada editorial team factors in an exhaustive list of data points. With this card, the scoring model used takes into account factors such as, but not limited to, cash-back rates and categories, fees, welcome bonuses, and other benefits and features. Keep in mind, what may be best for some people might not be right for you. Conduct informed research before deciding which cards will best help you achieve your financial goals.

Avid Costco shoppers that use the Canadian warehouse retail giant on a regular basis can cash-in on big earning rewards on standard purchases—especially if they fuel up at Costco. That said, if you’re looking for a card with a bit more perks, or with more extensive cash-back rewards categories, there are other options out there.
