Rich Culture

Stemming from a long and rich history

A charming, easy and under-discovered country

Ecuador is a beautiful and exceptionally varied country with a range of distinct geographical environments. From the coastal region, where you’ll find  Guayaquil , the country’s biggest city and main port to the Galapagos Islands, to the highlands of the Andes where beautiful mountain scenery and indigenous communities await, there is so much to discover. Ecuador doesn’t allow its visitors to become complacent, as there is always another landscape and adventure to discover.

For nature and wildlife lovers, there are exceptional places to discover, including the cloud forest north west of the capital of Quito, where you can spot beautiful hummingbirds, hike and swim by waterfalls in crystalline natural pools. There is also the world-famous Amazon, where wildlife is its most diverse, giving you the chance to spot anything from jaguars to tapirs to bright-billed toucans.

Ecuador’s cities are just as abundant with culture and history as its jungles are with wildlife. The capital,  Quito , is a vibrant city home to the fascinating and visually stunning Compañía de Jesús and La Capilla del Hombre (Chapel of Man), an art museum designed by the artist Oswaldo Guayasamín and dedicated to the people of Latin America.

Over in the  Otavalo  area you can see examples of beautiful Ecuadorian craftsmanship at the artisan markets. Here, locals adorn their famous traditional dress, known around the world for its unique woven designs.

Arguably the country’s most awe-inspiring features come in the form of its spectacular volcanoes, such as  Cotopaxi  and  Chimborazo  where, due to its location upon the equatorial bulge, its summit is the farthest place on the earth’s crust from the earth’s core.

And, of course, mainland Ecuador ties in beautifully with a trip to the  Galápagos Islands . It’s well worth spending some extra time discovering the cities, rainforests, volcanoes and markets that make this such an exciting and vibrant country.

Whatever you are looking to explore, Ecuador will never disappoint. Get inspired by browsing through some of our most popular example trips below. Then call one of our expert Ecuador Travel Designers to start planning the journey of a lifetime.

Where to go

Squeezed between mountain peaks amid the dramatic Andes, Quito’s setting is just as dramatic and inspiring as its character and identity, which can be discovered in everything from historic streets and bustling markets, to vibrant restaurants and awe-inspiring nature.

What started out as a small port town has impressively developed into a vibrant, bustling city; the largest in Ecuador in fact.

The heart of Ecuadorian craftsmanship and folk traditions, Otavalo is the place to experience authentic Ecuadorian culture. The handicraft market here is world renowned and a good place to pick up some excellent souvenirs, as well as learn more about the indigenous identity of Ecuador.

The central sierra of Ecuador is a beautifully scenic highland area and it’s here you’ll find the aptly named Avenue of the Volcanoes.

The Cloud Forests

Encountered where the Andean highlands run down to the Pacific coastline, set amid tumbling hills blanketed in exuberant rainforest and home to diverse and abundant wildlife, hidden here are some of Ecuador’s most stunning and delicate cloud forests.

One of the world’s last great natural areas of wilderness, the Amazon is a truly awe-inspiring location that has to be experienced to be fully understood. Home to one fifth of the world’s fresh water, the sheer scale of the Amazon River is breathtaking, with new fish, bird and animal species constantly being discovered amid its wild landscapes.

A vibrant colonial city set in the south of Ecuador, Cuenca is the country’s third largest city and is packed with historic landmarks and rich heritage.

Midwest Lowlands

Heading east of Guayaquil, and just before you hit the mighty Andes mountains, you’ll find yourself in Ecuador’s midwest lowlands. Despite being just 74km from the country’s biggest city, it is a quiet and secluded region and perfect for exploring Ecuador’s natural beauty.

Set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Chimborazo volcano, Riobamba is primarily used as a base for excursions into the surrounding wilderness, although there are a handful of attractions within the city to keep you occupied, even if your stay is a brief one.

Shortened from Baños de Agua Santa, meaning Baths of Sacred Water, it will come as no surprise that the town’s greatest attraction is the hydrothermal springs of the Cascada de la Virgen (The Virgin’s Waterfall). Baños is also known by the moniker ‘The Gateway to the Amazon’, for it is the only city located in the mountain region found just before the start of the Amazon jungle.

I worked with David in mid-2023 to plan a trip at the end of the year. I started thinking about Belize but as I thought more about it and described things I like to do, David and I agreed on Ecuador. I asked David to help me plan a trip on 3 pillars: culture, great food, and some physicality. David…

Great trip to Ecuador through Jacada. David and Anabel made sure that everything went smoothly. Will definitely use Jacada again.

Jacada helped us arrange a 14-day trip of a lifetime to Ecuador. All accommodations were top notch and all our guides were fantastic. We had a fantastic time!

Jacada organized a completely custom made 17-day tour for our family of 4 to Ecuador and Peru, including the Galapagos and Machu Pichu. They really listened to our preferences and every details of the trip was well planned, super fun, and exceeded our expectations most of the time. Would highly recommend Jacada. We will definitely book with them again.

Amazing family vacation in Ecuador thanks to Jacada Travel and their local partner. Everything worked to perfection. We wanted boutique luxury and that's exactly what we got: beautiful and unique hotels, amazing food, personalized service and Galapagos at its best

Classic Galapagos: Central Southern Islands (Grand Queen Beatriz)

We enjoyed the trip very much. Too bad there was a change of guides in the middle of the tour. Roberto and Alexis were both very good but it is natural for a person to make comparisons. They are quit different people in their mannerisms and the way things present the information. We feel the star in the crew was Giovanni, our cabin steward. Always around to help. One day our wet swim suits disappeared only to return all nice and dry.

Overall I enjoyed to tour very much and learned a lot. The itinerary was a bit confusing at times - there were some things Intrepid hadn't updated or changed and some passengers weren't very pleased about it. Meals and accommodations were great, guide was knowledgeable and made it interesting. I would recommend to a friend. Christina Patrick

Guide, boat and crew great. Other passengers great. Breakfast and lunch good, dinner hit and miss. Snacks great! Activities great. Too much food though! Even weather pretty good! Animals the best! Only negative was meeting person was cold/distant-not a good first in person impression considering how rude gadventures were to me in the online and phone booking process.

Overall, it was great. The guide Johan and the crew were nice and helpful, paying attention to safety. The ship was clean. The hot tub could be a little hotter. The shower handle was marked wrong, pointing cold for hot water, though we figured out on the 2nd day (another passenger told me). Meals were pretty good, but snacks served at the deck when we return from a day trip were the most enjoyable. Coffee/tea cups were not enough - I would have taken a personal mug if told in advance. The last night/morning harbored at Puerto Ayora was very hard for us. The choppy water caused us motion sickness, and we felt swaying for a few days after the trip.
This trip was everything and more than I hoped for. Apart from some problems with Avianca airline which is out of Intrepid’s control, the trip ran smoothly and covered all the things it said it would. The scenery and wildlife were spectacular, the crew were very professional and the food was in abundance. Nothing seemed to be a problem to them. My cabin had one bed light not working that I reported and also the toilet seat was very loose making it interesting in rough seas! and there was a broken handle which had been hidden in the drawer none of which was an issue as I was lucky enough to have the cabin to myself. I would query the location of the hotel accommodation and ask why it is not closer to the historical town? EVERYTHING else was just perfect- really!
The tour was excellent! The amount and variety of activities were perfect.

Ecuador: Luxury & Private Custom Trips

Seated at the equator on the Pacific Coast of South America, Ecuador is a small country that delivers outsize travel appeal. Within a land area comparable to Nevada, you’ll find dense Amazon rainforest, a string of sawtooth highland volcanoes, Cloud Forest, a rugged coast, and its crowning gem: the Galápagos Islands. Food, architecture, wildlife watching, birding, hiking, hacienda stays, indigenous culture, and outdoor recreation ring out like a siren’s call to travelers. And thanks to easy and sometimes direct connections to the U.S., it’s a jet lag-free destination that can be enjoyed within a week or two.

What is Ecuador best known for?

Undoubtedly, Ecuador is best known for the Galápagos Islands, Amazon rainforest, and high-altitude capital of Quito—but there’s much more to be experienced in this geologically diverse country.

Ecuador FAQs

A luxury trip to Ecuador might span anywhere from one to two weeks, depending on the length of your Galápagos cruise and how many places you hope to visit on the mainland.

Ecuador’s currency is the US Dollar. ATMs are widely available, even in some of the more remote locations. Still, you should carry some cash in case you find yourself in an area without a working ATM (ATMs often break down in Ecuador) and for tipping. It’s important to have smaller bills ($1, $5, $10, $20) as many merchants will refuse larger denominations. Credit cards are pretty widely accepted; however, cash is usually the way to go in rural locations.

Spanish, as well as several indigenous languages, are spoken in different regions of Ecuador. English is also spoken in most major cities and by those working in hospitality. Extraordinary Journeys will arrange English-speaking guides and drivers for your trip.

A luxury Ecuador trip might require a combination of private transfers, domestic flights, motorized canoes in the Amazon, and ships in the Galápagos. Not to worry, Extraordinary Journeys will coordinate all logistics and transfers.

Ecuadorian cuisine is diverse and reflects influences from indigenous, Spanish, and African culinary traditions. Food varies by region, from Locro de papa (a cheesy potato soup) in the Andean Highlands to coastal ceviche, offering travelers an ever-shifting gastronomic adventure.

Like anywhere, exercise situational awareness and mind your personal belongings when traveling in cities like Quito and Guayaquil. The Galápagos, Amazon, and Cloud Forest are considered quite safe.

Hiking Cotopaxi in Ecuador is a challenging endeavor that requires a reasonable level of physical fitness and preparation due to its high altitude and demanding terrain. Cotopaxi is one of the highest active volcanoes in the world, with its summit reaching about 19,347 feet above sea level. Altitude sickness can be a concern for many hikers attempting this climb. You’ll also want to be comfortable hiking in the dark—most summit attempts start in the very early hours.

Ecuador is one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth. More than 1,500 bird species have been recorded within its borders along with an incredible number of plants, reptiles, amphibians, and countless varieties of insects. For wildlife enthusiasts, the type who are drawn to an African safari, Ecuador will absolutely deliver.

  • The Amazon Basin, and the Ecuadorian Amazon in particular, is home to truly astounding biodiversity and is believed by many to contain the most diverse set of species on the Earth. This includes: 800 species of fish (including three varieties of piranha), 350 species of reptiles, more than 300 species of mammals (including jaguars), thousands of species of insects, and is a birdwatcher’s paradise.
  • Compared to the enormity of the Amazon, Galápagos is a very small archipelago, but the number of animals and nature of their survival and evolutionary traits are sure to impress the savviest traveler. When visiting the islands, some animals you can look forward to spotting are giant tortoise, marine and land iguana, dolphins, sea lions, penguins, blue-footed boobies, an immense number of birds, and much more.
  • As one of the largest flying land birds, the Andean Condor is a magnificent sight and a must-see species for all birders visiting the Andean Highlands .
  • The Cloud Forest is home to incredible flora and fauna, including 300 species of moths and butterflies, sloths, monkeys, frogs, bears, 400 species of birds (cock of the rock, hummingbird, toucans…), and many more.

No, American citizens do not need a tourist visa to visit Ecuador.

When is the best time to travel to Ecuador?

Situated on the equator and lacking four true seasons, Ecuador is considered a year-round destination. The most popular time to travel to Ecuador is June through September and during festive season (December 20 through January 5.) If you wish to avoid the crowds, we recommend you go during the shoulder seasons of May, October/November, and January/February.

When planning a luxury trip to Ecuador, it’s important to understand that the weather varies drastically by region. What’s more, altitude directly affects the climate, so each location’s “best time to visit” may be nuanced. Generally speaking, Ecuador has two main seasons—the wet season and the dry season.

● One thing you can be sure of is that Quito is a cool and consistent city. Due to its high elevation and location very near to the equator, the weather is springlike year-round.

● The Andean Highlands experience afternoon showers from about January through May. The dry season, perhaps the best time to visit, is June through December. This region is characterized by warm days and chilly nights (though the higher you are, the colder it will be).

● The Amazon is hot and humid and sees precipitation throughout the year. However, some months, including April through July and again in October and November, are wetter than others. Higher water levels result in better wildlife viewing in the Amazon as animals can become more active. If you don’t mind getting a little wet, it’s a year-round destination!

When is the best time to travel to the Galápagos Islands?

There really isn’t a bad time to visit the Galápagos Islands.

Although the archipelago sits on the equator, the cool Humboldt Current brings cold water into the region, and with it, rainfall and cooler temperatures. In this regard, we should think in terms of wet and dry seasons.

The wet season runs from December to May and is when seas are the calmest and temperatures are the warmest. If you’re hoping to swim or snorkel, the wet season is ideal for both warmth and visibility.

Dry season spans June through November. June boasts the warmest temperatures of the season, but the water temperature is cooling, and the seas are relatively calm. By July and August, the air and water temperatures have tempered, rain showers arrive, and seas are churning. In September and August, the air temperature is warm, but the water is cool, and the seas are rough.

Weather aside, you may also want to consider whale and waved albatross migrations if you hope to see either.

Where to travel to in Ecuador

Both Quito and Guayaquil are served by a variety of airlines with direct flights from the U.S., including American, Delta, United, and JetBlue. Once there, we recommend staying one to two weeks. Because it’s in the same time zone as many U.S. cities, jetlag won’t drag you down.

Quito , the capital of Ecuador and a UNESCO World Heritage site is a lively city with one of the best-preserved historic centers in Latin America. Whether you’re a history buff, a sucker for delicious food (and chocolate), an adrenaline junkie, or a geography enthusiast (straddle the equator!), there is something here for you. Resting at 9,350 feet above sea level, Quito is the second-highest capital in the world, so the city can quite literally take your breath away.

Galápagos Islands

The Galápagos Archipelago , another UNESCO World Heritage Site, is often found at the top of travelers’ bucket lists. The Galápagos is such an immense and important marine reserve that it has earned the moniker of a “unique living museum and showcase of evolution.” Travelers have the option to take a cruise ranging anywhere from four to eight nights or spend their time in a land-based lodge. Multi-day cruising offers the best wildlife viewing experiences as you will visit different islands, but a lodge is an excellent option for families with young kids or those prone to seasickness.

Ecuadorian Amazon

The Ecuadorian Amazon offers exceptional biodiversity within a tropical rainforest that blankets much of the country’s eastern side. We prefer the eco-lodges of Yasuní National Park and Biosphere Reserve, which is 99.73 percent undeveloped and boasts some of the highest per-square-foot biodiversity on planet Earth. To reach this remote outpost, you’ll fly into Coca and then take a two-hour motorized canoe ride up the Napo River—a journey that’s as scenic as it is logistical. Canoe excursions, wildlife tracking, tower lookouts, canopy walks, birding, photography, and even wellness treatments await.

Andean Highlands

With towering Andes peaks and a string of volcanoes (“Avenue of Volcanoes”) mingling amid pastoral valleys, the Andean Highlands should not be overlooked. Pick your pace, from a thrilling ascent of snow-capped Cotopaxi to shopping Otavalo’s local markets or horseback riding through the ranchland that hugs our favorite haciendas. The region also affords travelers a special opportunity to engage with indigenous culture and tradition; Quechua can still be heard throughout the Highlands, and Inca ruins and relics can be found in the region.

Cloud Forest

The Cloud Forest , a lush, misty, high-altitude forest represents one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world. The low-hanging fog, towering mountains, and cascading waterfalls set a magical scene. An abundance of orchid species grows throughout the otherwise green hills, and the equally abundant birdlife and butterflies flitter amongst the colorful backdrop. With several bio-reserves, wildlife refuges, and conservation areas,[CR5]  this prime location for eco-tourism offers hikes, birdwatching, and even an open-air cable car to view the forest from just above the treetops. There’s white-water rafting and river tubing, too.

Culture and customs.

About 65 per cent of Ecuadorians have a mixed European background and 25 per cent are indigenous (there are more than a dozen distinct groups). The rest of the population is predominantly from either Spanish or African descent. It’s a small country, but food, dress, dialects and customs can vary throughout.

Ecuador’s two largest cities – Quito and Guayaquil – split most of the population into mountain living and coastal living. People from the coast (Guayaquil) call mountain people (Quito) conservative, whereas mountain people have been known to argue that those from the coast are uncultured. While usually contained to light banter, this rivalry sometimes creates tension between the two cities.

Eating and drinking

Ecuadorian cuisine is largely shaped by its abundant fresh produce. Seafood and plantain dominate the coast, with dietary staples including ceviche, tropical fish (particularly corvina or sea bass) and seafood soups such as encebollado.

Creamy coconut milk is commonly used to create flavourful sauces. Look for the word ‘encocado’ on menus – it means the dish is served in a coconut sauce.

Foods to try in Ecuador

1. locro de papa.

A classic Ecuadorian potato and corn soup, usually served with cheese, corn and avocado.

2. Encebollado

Usually made with albacore tuna, encebollado is a pickled onion fish soup. Ecuadorians swear this soup is the ultimate hangover food.

There are many variations of this dish, but just about all of them use seafood as its core ingredient, such as fish, shrimp, octopus, squid, crab, clams or lobster. It’s diced and then marinated in various ways for flavor.

4. Ceviche de chocos

Vegetarians don’t need to feel left out while everyone is feasting on all the ceviche – ceviche de chochos is a vegetarian alternative. An indigenous bean called chocho is combined with onions, tomatoes, cilantro (coriander), limes, oranges and tomato sauce, then topped with maiz tostado (toasted corn nut), chifles (plantain chips), avocado and hot sauce.

Geography and environment

Tucked away on the continent’s Pacific coastline, Ecuador is one of the smallest countries in South America . Bordering Colombia in the north and Peru in the south, Ecuador contains its own segments of some of South America’s most famous landmarks, including the Amazon rainforest and the Andes.

Like many other South American countries, Ecuador’s coastline boasts a large number of pristine beaches. Mantra, Crucita, Canoa and Montanita are among the famous spots, however there are many other national parks and small coastal towns that offer their own variations of beachside bliss.

Ecuador’s capital, Quito, is located in the north of the country and is renowned for its colonial architecture. To the west of the city is Pichincha, one of Ecuador’s many spectacular volcanoes.

Adding to Ecuador’s list of natural wonders are the incredible Galapagos Islands, which lie about 1000 km west of the mainland. These volcanic islands are famed for their association with botanist Charles Darwin, who spent considerable time studying their incredible biodiversity.

Follow in the footsteps of Darwin on our 10 day Best of Galapagos trip

Top 5 natural marvels of Ecuador

1. volcanoes.

Ecuador is a climbing and mountaineering paradise, with some of the grandest (and most active) volcanoes in the world. Just south of Quito lies the ‘Avenue of Volcanos’, which includes the country's highest peak, and no less than nine awe-inspiring volcanos.

Ecuador is a beach lover’s haven, with a well-earned reputation for supplying some of the most gorgeous spots on South America’s Pacific coast. While there are no shortage of backpacker havens and crowded Ecuadorian holiday spots, those seeking a little more privacy should check out the beautiful Manta and the gorgeous Machalilla National Park.

3. The Andes

Hard to ignore, the Andes form Ecuador’s rocky spine and are home to breathtaking tropical valleys, snow-capped peaks and fresh mountain lakes. A welcome escape from Ecuador’s hot summers, the Andes offer an unforgettable array of high-altitude adventures.

Explore the Andes and the Amazon on our 8 day Ecuador Highlands trip

4. The Amazon

Rich in color and natural diversity, Ecuador is blessed with a sizeable portion of the famous Amazon rainforest. Lying to the west of the Andes, this incredible jungle is home to some of the world’s most fascinating and unique species, as well as being an ideal place to enjoy activities such as canoeing, trekking and bird watching.

5. Galapagos Islands

Journey to a lost world and discover a wildlife sanctuary that continues to inspire visitors and scientists alike. Relatively untouched by human life, the Galapagos is an ecological Disneyland, the jewel in Ecuador’s already glistening crown.

If you're looking for gifts to take home after your trip, you'll find plenty of local markets throughout the country. Here are a few top shopping spots to buy local goods and souvenirs in Ecuador.

In Quito, the Olga Fisch Gallery is an excellent place to shop clothing, ceramics, paintings and other creations by Ecuador’s best artisans and craftspeople. Be aware that the gallery focuses on high-end products and the price tags reflect the quality.

Otavalo Market in the city of Otavalo – the largest and most famous market in South America – is the best place in the country to shop for handmade artisan goods including alpaca sweaters, textiles, ceramics, leather products, jewelry and woodcarvings.

Known locally as Plaza de los Ponchos, Otavalo Market has been around for hundreds of years, predating Incan times. Vendors sell their wares seven days a week, though Saturdays and Wednesdays are the best days to go when more vendors are set up. Like most markets in Latin America, bargaining is accepted.

Despite popular opinion, Panama hats are not from Panama, they are an Ecuadorian creation. Originally woven using local straw along the coast, these days they’re mostly made in Cuenca.

The city’s hat factories offer an interesting glimpse into the production of this UNESCO-listed craft. Make sure to shop around if you are in the market to purchase your own Panama hat as price and quality vary greatly (between USD 10 and USD 250).

Cuenca is also famed for its ceramics. Artesa and E. Vega Galeria – the workshop of Ecuador’s most famous artist, Eduardo Vega – are two notable places to shop for quality ceramics.

Festivals and events

Ecuador has a busy festival calendar. Here are some of the country's most popular events:

1. Carnival

While many associate colorful costumes and giant floats with Carnival, celebrations in Ecuador are a bit different. Here, the week before Lent (usually in February) is marked with boisterous water/food fights.

Friends and strangers alike can expect to be doused in all kinds of things including flour, water balloons and eggs. If this sort of play sounds more annoying than fun, head to Ambato, where flour is replaced with flowers.

2. Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun)

Commemorating the June solstice and harvest, this festival is celebrated by indigenous communities across South America. The main event in Ecuador takes place in Otavalo, where barbeques, bonfires, traditional dances and parades go on for a week.

3. Mama Negra

The most important event on the Latacunga calendar features a parade of characters in flamboyant costumes, dancing, drinking and general revelry. Honouring both the Virgen de las Mercedes and the 19th century liberation of African slaves, it’s so important it happens twice – once in September and then again in November.

4. Cuenca Independence Day

Celebrations fill every corner of the city each November as Cuenca commemorates its independence from Spain. Overlapping with the annual Day of the Dead festival, streets fill with people taking in parades, dances, and sporting events; crafts fairs are held across the city; and food vendors set up at cemeteries while families visit the graves of loved ones.

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to Ecuador?

Most travelers do not need a visa to enter Ecuador. This includes visitors from Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, the UK, Ireland and most other Western European countries. Visa-exempt travelers will receive an entry stamp valid for 90 days on arrival.

Some travelers will need to apply for a visa prior to departure including citizens from Kenya, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Please contact your nearest Ecuadorian embassy for more information.

In any case, your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Argentina.

When is the best time to visit Ecuador?

There are two seasons in Ecuador, wet and dry, and they vary depending on the region. For the most part, Ecuador is a sunny, warm country, and even the wet season will bring its fair share of sunny days.

The best time to visit is largely dependent on your itinerary, although it should be noted that the Christmas period (December to January) is often the busiest, so be prepared for large crowds.

In the Amazon, August and December through March are the driest seasons and April to June are the wettest. In the highlands, the dry season is from June to September as well as December. The Galapagos and coastal regions are mainly influenced by ocean currents.

The hot and rainy season runs from January to April. It doesn't rain much, but you can expect some downpours at times. From May to December, it can be a bit cooler with more overcast days.

The high seasons in the Galapagos (June through August, December and January) are generally determined by holiday trends and not by weather conditions

Is tipping customary in Ecuador?

While tipping isn’t mandatory, tips are very much appreciated by service workers and guides. Leaving a 10% tip is customary in restaurants. Some automatically add a 10% service charge to your bill, in which case an extra tip isn’t required.

What is the internet access like in Ecuador?

Internet can be accessed at internet cafes and hotels in large cities and towns but is limited in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Ecuador?

Cell phone coverage is good in Ecuador’s cities, but may not be available in rural and mountainous areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Ecuador?

Ecuador has a mix of Western-style flushable toilets and squat toilets. Either way, always carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as these are not always provided. You’ll notice that most flushable toilets have a wastebasket next to them. This is because toilets in Ecuador can’t handle toilet paper and will overflow if you try to flush it. Instead, always put used toilet paper in these baskets.

What will it cost for a...?

Short bus ride = USD 0.20 Juice = USD 1 Street food snack = USD 1.50 Simple lunch = USD 3-5 Sit down dinner at a cafe or restaurant = US$10

Can I drink the water in Ecuador?

Travelers should avoid drinking tap water in Ecuador. For environmental reasons, try to avoid bottled water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found as some hotels provide this. Remember to peel fruit and vegetables before eating and avoid ice in drinks.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Ecuador?

Credit cards are usually accepted by hotels, large retailers and tourist sites but are less commonly accepted by smaller vendors and family-run restaurants and market stalls. Always carry enough cash for smaller purchases in case credit cards are not an option.

What is ATM access like in Ecuador?

ATMs are easily found in the large cities and airports, although are less common in rural and remote areas. When traveling out of the city, be prepared by having enough cash, as ATMs aren't always available.

Do I need travel insurance before travelling in Ecuador?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of your trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.  For more information on insurance, please go to:  Travel Insurance

Will I experience altitude sickness in Ecuador?

Most people can start to feel the effects of altitude at over 2000 m (6561 ft) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. Quito, as well as other tourist spots, sit above this elevation and some travelers might experience symptoms of altitude sickness, including shortness of breath, headache, nausea and loss of appetite. It’s important to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader at once if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have any health concerns before undertaking the trip. Particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition or take any medication.

Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Ecuador?

Ecuador requires proof of yellow fever vaccination if you are travelling from a country with risk of yellow fever. Many South and Central American countries pose a risk (including Argentina, Brazil and Colombia), so if you are planning on visiting other nearby nations before Ecuador you may be required to get this vaccine.

Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule your vaccination 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective. No other vaccines are required in order to enter Ecuador but some are recommended for protection against disease.

Is Ecuador a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Ecuador is a relatively hassle-free destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers. Same-sex marriage was legalised here in 2019 and LGBT discrimination is illegal. In saying that, conservative attitudes still exist throughout the country and LGBTQIA+ travelers are generally advised to use discretion when it comes to public displays of affection.

In the big cities like Quito and Guayaquil, there are many gay-friendly hotels, bars, clubs and cafes, however, they can be harder to find in smaller cities and towns.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex  or ILGA before you travel.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

ECUADOR LUXURY TOURS

Luxury travel ecuador.

Home to the legendary Galapagos Islands and one of the first UNESCO World Heritage sites, Quito, there’s a reason private tours of Ecuador are high on the lists of many world travelers. The Galapagos Islands host the most biodiversity anywhere on Earth, and it was this unique wildlife that inspired Darwin’s revolutionary theory of evolution. Maybe even more remarkable, the island animals have no fear of humans because of the lack of natural predators, making for unforgettable experiences as you explore the archipelago. The country’s mainland has a lot to offer, too. Perched between the peaks of the Andes, the capital city of Quito boasts incredibly well-preserved colonial architecture in the historical center. Experience the impressive diversity of the ethereal cloud forest during your luxury tour with a secluded forest lodge as your base for private excursions into the surrounding nature. In the scenic Andean highlands, travelers can visit sprawling working haciendas and explore markets brimming with colorful goods created by the prominent local indigenous population. Journey into the heart of the jungle while touring the Ecuadorian Amazon to enjoy unique flora and fauna from sunrise to sunset.

ECUADOR'S HIGHLIGHTS

The Galapagos Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, have the most diversity of living creatures in the world. Encounter an unfathomable variety of wildlife, including albatrosses, penguins, boobies, giant tortoises, whales, and dolphins, and discover why Charles Darwin began his ground-breaking theory of evolution here. Our Galapagos tours journey through the islands from a base either on the land or sea. Blue Parallel travel experts will help you select the perfect option depending on your preferences and group size. For sea-based explorations, there are a variety of ships to choose from, ranging from 40 passenger shared vessels to 16 passenger privately chartered yachts. For those who prefer a land-based tour of the Galapagos, accommodation options vary from sleek, modern eco-lodges to luxurious glamping tents.

Nicknamed “the Florence of South America” for its beautiful and well-preserved colonial architecture that is mixed with indigenous influences, Quito has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978. While visiting Quito on a private tour of Ecuador, explore the capital city’s narrow streets and its most impressive churches with a private guide and enjoy exclusive access to the Convent of Santo Domingo in the evening. This opulent church was constructed in a Latin American Baroque style and is known for its breathtaking interiors and beautiful views of the city from its rooftop. Indulge in a gourmet meal in Quito’s vibrant culinary scene, where many restaurants highlight traditional Ecuadorian cuisine and ingredients.

Take a private tour into the heart of the Amazon rainforest to discover its unique flora and fauna. The Ecuadorian Amazon also offers a fascinating look into the lives of indigenous populations. Using a luxury eco-lodge as a base, enjoy daily excursions with your expert naturalist guides to explore the Amazonian jungle from sunrise to sunset. Visit a mysterious parrot salt lick in the early morning to watch the Napo river banks come alive with the colors and sounds of hundreds of birds. During the day, trek through the terra firme forest to see ancient trees, bromeliads, and orchids, as well as different species of monkeys, birds, or even tapir. In the evening, a night walk will introduce guests to the nocturnal wildlife of the area. Our bespoke Amazon tours also offer guests a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit a local Kichua village where female community members will show their extraordinary way of life.

Stunningly picturesque, the Andean highlands are not to be overlooked when planning your luxury tour to Ecuador. To experience this incredible region, stay at Hacienda Zuleta, a working, colonial-era farm located between the peaks of the Andes mountains at over 9,000 feet above sea level. This charming property has been owned by the family of former President Galo Plaza Lasso for more than 100 years. While at the hacienda, enjoy horseback riding on their exclusive breed of Andean Zuleteño horses, a mixture of Spanish-Andalusian, English, and Quarter horses. En route to the highlands from Quito, stop at the famous Otavalo market, one of the most important indigenous markets in Latin America, where one can purchase everything from livestock to fresh produce to artisanal jewelry and crafts.

Cloud forest

The varying altitudes of the cloud forest create cooler temperatures than the Amazon and numerous microclimates, resulting in an incredible assortment of flora and fauna. So while it is less well known than some of Ecuador’s other highlights, the beautiful cloud forest is a perfect addition to a tour of Ecuador. Perched on a plateau at 3,117 feet, the five-star Mashpi Lodge is both a private, luxurious hideaway in the clouds, as well as an active nature reserve. Trek through the enchanting cloud forest with a personal guide who will point out some of the fascinating plant and animal species of the area, including orchids, trees, frogs, and 400 species of birds. The forest is equally as intriguing at night - as the sounds and smells of the forest intensify, listen to the croaking of nocturnal frogs, spot nocturnal birds, and then turn off your flashlight to observe sparkling fireflies and bioluminescent fungi.

Ecuador Luxury Travel

Best of ecuador tours and vacations.

Ecuador has some of South America's most diverse landscapes, from the Amazon to the Andes. Travel to Ecuador with Galapagos Islands are a necessity, but our Destination Experts recommend spending time in Ecuador on land and at sea to see everything.

After a private tour of Quito's colonial buildings and standing at the middle of the world, unwind at a remote Amazon rainforest lodge. Take a horseback ride through the Andean foothills or shop for goods at Otavalo's famous market with your private guide.

Mainland Ecuador Tours: Your Gateway to Nature’s Masterpiece

Have you ever felt like there's a world of adventure out there waiting for you, but you're not quite sure where to start? South America is full of fascinating places—it can feel impossible to choose a country that combines your love for nature, wildlife, history, gastronomy, and architecture into one unforgettable journey.

Ecuador may have eluded your travel radar until now, but it's time for a revelation. Imagine a place where biodiversity meets colonial charm, where you can stroll on cobblestone streets one day and find yourself in a secluded Amazon Jungle lodge the next. The world of Ecuador awaits, and you've been missing out on its breathtaking landscapes.

Allow Quasar—a family-founded Ecuador tour & travel company—to reveal the hidden gems of our homeland. Whether you complement your Galapagos luxury cruise with a seamless Ecuador tour or plan a personalized mainland-only expedition, your adventure with Quasar promises an "aha" moment that's long overdue.

Map of Ecuador

Ecuador, often whispered as South America's best-kept secret, is where your adventurous spirit meets paradise. Tucked between the equator and the Andes Mountains, this biodiverse country is surprisingly accessible. But what truly sets Ecuador tours apart is how easy it is to personalize your journey to perfection, with local Guides to help you explore your way.

Adventure enthusiast, we see you. We know you’re searching for the next meaningful travel experience that takes you off the beaten path into authentic culture, memorable meals, and rare wildlife. A cookie-cutter trip won’t do.

Look no further than our most popular Ecuador travel itineraries, designed for travelers like you who want to experience life, not escape it.

Begin your journey in the heart of Quito's historic center, the very first UNESCO World Heritage site. Condé Nast even hails it as "Latin America's Best Preserved Colonial City." On a private luxury tour, stay in authentic Spanish-style colonial hotels nestled amidst the old town's charm. Don’t be surprised if you feel like you’re in Europe—without the jet lag!

Wind your way through cobblestone streets and hilly lanes, passing centuries-old Spanish-style residences adorned with garden courtyards. Marvel at the opulent golden altar of La Compañia Church and savor a chocolate-tasting session featuring the finest cacao in the world. Colonial Quito is the perfect base for other day tours in the region, including Otavalo and the Andes Highlands.

VIEW AVAILABLE TOURS

From Colonial Quito, embark on multi-day guided adventures to explore Ecuador's pristine national parks, colonial haciendas, and lush cloud forests like Cotopaxi and the mystical Mashpi.

Ecuador boasts pristine national parks, stunning colonial haciendas, and unspoiled cloud forests. For a taste of Ecuadorian country life, rustic mountain-side Haciendas preserve their essence while providing unique comfort and service. And if you seek unique wildlife encounters in the Central Andes Highlands, our Glamping experiences offer active exploration, gourmet cuisine, and unparalleled immersion in nature's wonders.

Combine an Amazon Adventure with your Galapagos Cruise or Mainland Ecuador tour for the ultimate wildlife safari in the Western Hemisphere. It’s surprisingly easy to journey from the high-elevation Colonial city to a luxury lodge in the Amazon Jungle.

Ecuador's headwaters offer prime habitat, exceptional wildlife viewing, and immersive river cruises in the Amazon basin. Extending your stay in the Amazon is the easiest and most cost-effective way to explore the Earth's largest tropical forest. A quick 30-minute flight from Quito takes you to Coca on the Napo River, followed by a scenic 2-hour motorized launch up the river to your lodge or river cruise. Here, you'll encounter Pygmy Marmosets (the world's smallest monkey species), blue morpho butterflies, and a rich variety of birds, from Toucans to Scarlet Macaws, in one of the planet's last truly wild frontiers.

Most consider Cuenca the country’s most beautiful city, a step back in time reminiscent of Europe! We also call this vibrant urban hub Ecuador’s ‘city of rivers’. Cuenca is made for walking, a city that has preserved its cobblestone streets and whimsical feel. Modern shops and cafés mix with the Spanish-style mansions of old, with a slew of museums, churches, and squares to revel in. It’s the perfect place to pause, breathe, and indulge in fine dining.

For guests who want to avoid elevation in Quito and the Andes, Guayaquil on the Pacific coast is an excellent option. Guayaquil is the perfect place to see the surrounding fantastic haciendas and try the best chocolate in the world. The stunning beaches of Ecuador are yours to explore!

After an unforgettable Galapagos Yacht Safari, don’t forget to sit back and reminisce. The Galapagos Islands are also home to beautiful beaches with soft white sand providing a feeling of paradise that deserves a few extra days to soak up the sun and relax.

For those seeking a luxury island tour, our carefully selected accommodations on Santa Cruz and San Cristobal Islands offer a tranquil haven where you can extend your Galapagos experience. Immerse yourself in the gentle rhythms of island life, take leisurely strolls along pristine shores, or simply savor the feeling of absolute relaxation as you indulge in spa treatments. The magic of Galapagos awaits.

Top 5 Frequently Asked Questions About Traveling to Mainland Ecuador

1. what is the best time to travel to ecuador.

Ecuador's equatorial location makes it a year-round destination with a remarkably diverse climate. Whether you're drawn to the lush rainforests, the highland cities, or the coastal regions, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the mild weather and low humidity in many parts of the country.

For exploring the Andean highlands and cities like Quito and Cuenca, the dry season from June to September is often considered the ideal time. During this period, you can enjoy crisp, sunny days and cooler evenings, making it perfect for outdoor adventures and city explorations.

For those interested in experiencing an Ecuador Amazon tour, the months from November to February offer fewer rain showers, making it easier to explore the lush jungle and its incredible biodiversity.

Ecuador's diverse climate means there's no wrong time to visit, but your choice should align with your specific interests and activities. Whether you prefer the Andes, the Galapagos, or the Amazon, Ecuador has something extraordinary to offer year-round.

2. WHAT MAKES ECUADOR AN IDEAL DESTINATION FOR ADVENTURE TRAVELERS?

Ecuador is an adventure enthusiast's paradise for several compelling reasons. Its geographical diversity means you can experience high-altitude trekking in the Andean mountains, thrilling jungle expeditions in the Amazon rainforest, and world-class snorkeling and diving in the Galapagos Islands—all within a relatively compact area.

This accessibility allows you to pack a remarkable variety of outdoor activities into a single trip. Additionally, Ecuador offers a perfect blend of cultural immersion and adrenaline-pumping experiences. You can hike ancient Inca trails, raft down exhilarating rivers, mountain bike through scenic landscapes, and witness unique wildlife in their natural habitats. With passionate local guides and diverse ecosystems, Ecuador beckons adventure travelers seeking unforgettable experiences in a setting that's as breathtaking as it is exhilarating.

3. IS IT EASY TO TRAVEL TO ECUADOR FROM THE USA OR CANADA?

Traveling to Ecuador from the U.S. or Canada is exceptionally convenient. One of the key factors contributing to this ease is Ecuador's use of the U.S. dollar as its official currency. For American travelers, this eliminates the need for currency exchange and the associated hassles, allowing for a seamless transition.

As far as logistics go, both the U.S. and Canada have well-established flight routes to Ecuador, with major airlines offering direct flights to major cities like Quito and Guayaquil. These flights make access to Ecuador's incredible landscapes, vibrant cities, and diverse cultures remarkably straightforward. Whether you're planning a Galapagos adventure, an exploration of the Andes, or an Amazon rainforest expedition, getting to Ecuador is the first step toward a journey filled with unparalleled experiences. And rest assured: Quasar’s team of destination specialists will seamlessly plan and coordinate every detail, so you can focus on enjoying your time in Ecuador!

4. WHAT KIND OF WILDLIFE WILL I SEE IN MAINLAND ECUADOR?

Our Mainland Ecuador tour packages offer a treasure trove of wildlife experiences. In the Andean highlands, you can spot Andean condors majestically soaring through the skies. In the mystical Cloud Forests, you might encounter the vibrant plumage of the quetzal or the elusive spectacled bear, the only bear species native to South America. The Amazon rainforest reveals a stunning array of biodiversity, from playful river otters to vibrantly colored macaws. And, on the Pacific coast, humpback whales migrate to Ecuadoran waters, offering thrilling whale-watching opportunities.

Ecuador's mainland boasts over 1,600 bird species, making it one of the world's premier bird watching destinations. With the extraordinary range of ecosystems within Mainland Ecuador, you'll witness the captivating richness of life on Earth.

Ecuador & The Galapagos Islands Luxury Tours

Luxury travel to ecuador & galapagos islands.

Indigenous villages in the inland highlands, a plush cloud forest mountain, the backwater streams of the Amazonian Rainforest, the uniquely remarkable Galapagos Islands… Ecuador rewards travelers handsomely.

Straddling two hemispheres, Ecuador may be small but it has a dynamic character. It is most identified with its Galapagos Islands archipelago, some 650 miles west of mainland Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean. Nothing quite compares to the thrill of observing wildlife on these natural volcanic islands, where the animals do not run or fly away when humans approach. It was here that Charles Darwin discovered conditions that helped shape his ideas on evolutionary theory. Life evolved on these islands in isolation, separate from the rest of the world. Distinctions exist even from one island to the next. With a visit to these special islands on the life-list of so many nature travelers, and as a leader in sustainable tourism best practices, Big Five wants to help insure that the Galapagos does not become another “go now before it’s too late” travel destination.

Big Five has raised the sustainable travel bar higher by linking the Galapagos with exploring the incredible natural and cultural heritage of mainland Ecuador, which includes some of the established indigenous markets that have existed for a millennium. Once the Inca Empire’s northernmost territory, it boasts important archeological sites as well as pre-Inca fortresses. In the highland valleys, Quechua-speaking communities continue traditions of weaving, artwork and handicrafts using many of the same techniques as generations past. There are opportunities to travel upriver via dugout canoe into the still-virgin Amazon Rainforest to stay at a simple ecolodge run by the ancestral Waorani people, where small-scale ecotourism might just help them stay in their forest. The history of Ecuador’s traditional peoples reaches back some 11,000 years, and it is estimated that 25% of Ecuador’s population today is of indigenous heritage. The beautifully preserved cities of Quito and Cuenca are noted for sumptuous 16th-century art and architecture. The tapestry of Ecuador, from the Galapagos, to the Amazon, to the Andes, from distinctive wildlife to authentic highland cultures, makes this a land of adventures.

A trip to the surreal volcanic islands of the Galápagos 500 miles off the coast of Ecuador is an extraordinary wildlife expedition. This archipelago of 21 islands was designated a national park in 1959, a strategy that has been protecting the islands and their surrounding

waters ever since. Luxury cruises here bring a biodiverse wildlife adventure, with creatures that appear to have stepped from the pages of National Geographic. Visitors explore the main islands – Isabella Island, San Cristobal Island, Santa Cruz Island and Santa Fe Island – by sea and on foot, encountering marine and land iguanas, giant tortoises, fur seals and sea lions, plus blue-footed boobies, penguins, cormorants, finches and frigatebirds. The sports-minded will revel in the dozens of opportunities for hiking, snorkeling, diving, kayaking and surfing. Cruises from mainland Ecuador begin in the port of Manta, and

for those flying into the Galápagos, Santa Cruz is the most popular embarkation point. Private motor yachts and luxury catamarans allow for complete comfort, while delivering incredible itineraries conducted by renowned naturalists. Small-ship cruises of no more than 100 passengers are nimble enough to skirt around the islands and into inlets, searching for wildlife that has existed on this exotic equatorial island grouping for centuries.

Luxury Adventure Tour of Ecuador & the Galapagos

(12 Days - Departs Daily on a Private Basis ) Quito, Cloud Forest, Galapagos cruise (5 nights)

This tour combines Ecuador's incredible natural and cultural treasures with the best hotel in Quito, a luxury lodge in the Andean cloud forest, and a cruise in the Galapagos Islands.

Begin in  Quito , a historic city among snowcapped volcanoes in the Andes. Overnight at a beautiful mansion-style hotel in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage district. With your private local guide, tour the city center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with Spanish colonial-era architecture, including museums and churches with spectacular interiors.

Continue to an upscale lodge surrounded by the beautiful  Andean cloud forest . During your stay, explore the jungle with a naturalist guide, search for orchids and butterflies, visit the hummingbird viewpoint, ride the gondola through the forest canopy, climb the observation tower and swim in waterfalls.

Next, spend six days exploring the  Galapagos Islands —a dream destination for nature lovers—on one of our preferred expedition cruises. Each day, tour different islands with an expert naturalist, and get close to giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, marine iguanas and other iconic Galapagos wildlife. See the cycle of life up close, which depending on the season, might include mating rituals, newborns feeding, territorial squabbles, and more. Snorkel among sea turtles, playful sea lions and schools of brightly colored fish. Upon request, we arrange private yacht charters, SCUBA diving and other options in the Galapagos.

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, quito – opulent welcome to the old city.

Snow-capped volcanic mountains stand above Ecuador's capital, gazing down on a city that meanders through a valley. You're greeted at the airport and descend into Quito, driven down the slopes to the largest preserved colonial city in South America. At the heart of Quito is Plaza de la Independencia, where history hides beneath the ground, and fabulous 16th-century buildings gaze over a statue of independence. Your hotel is one of these buildings, and your balcony has a prime view. Recently redeveloped, the hotel relives the pomp and razzmatazz of when it was owned by a Spanish conqueror. Every detail harks to a distant era, fully immersing you in the city's past while you're relaxing in the bedroom. There's an astonishing dedication to the minute, from the feather quill on your side-table to paintings that hang above faded wood chairs. Check-in and relax... this opulent Ecuador journey has only just begun.

What's Included:

Quito – The City's Charming Heritage

Exploring Quito's streets is like pulling back the layers of history, each building providing a new and distinct narrative. Today you're guided by a local and walk to monuments that symbolize the city's development; like La Compania, a church that's completely covered in gold leaf, or the Presidential Palace, where history and modernity blur on the courtyard. Visit the historic courtyards of bishops and conquistadores, now converted into public spaces with vibrant atmospheres. Admire how churches were sculpted from a myriad of styles, the neoclassic frescos beneath Moorish domes. Then lunch at San Francisco Square, a place that rolls to the ambient beat of street musicians. To complete the tour you take the teleférico, a cable car that glides to the slopes of Pichincha Volcano. Expect staggering views of the city and the volcanoes that surround it.

Galapagos Cruise – Iconic Birds and a First Night on the Water

Birds flutter and squawk on North Seymour Island, huge colonies of rare species gathering in a mass of feathers. There are blue-footed boobies, with the colorful adults joined by adorable fluffy babies. Magnificent frigatebirds are mating, the males competing to showcase their biggest and brightest red chest. Nazca boobies also nest here, a third iconic species to start your Galapagos exploration. After the flight from Quito, you'll transfer immediately to your yacht for lunch and the short cruise north to this famous island. Land iguanas also fill the trail, many so well camouflaged that you must look hard before you step. And none of this wildlife feels threatened by your presence. Intimacy is one of the great highlights of exploring the Galapagos. For the next eight days, you're going to be getting breathtakingly close to its wild riches.

Yours will be one of the archipelago's most luxurious boats, a lavish and large boat that offers premium levels of exclusivity. The boat's size offers extremely spacious cabins as well as different social areas. Relax in the bar lounge, enjoy the sumptuous restaurant, and rest on the wide upper deck, watching the ocean waves as the sun paints the dusk sky. Three naturalist guides are on board, allowing you to choose from a variety of activities throughout the cruise. Then there are the little touches, like cocktails with the crew, ceviche, and sushi when you return from an excursion, or a library full of books on the Galapagos. After your excursion to North Seymour, you enjoy a first dinner and night on board, with the yacht sailing through the night to the far western islands.

Galapagos Cruise – Abundant Wildlife on Barren Floreana Island

Fernandina is a landscape of contrasts, the archipelago's youngest island alive with the scars of volcanic history. Lava flows and tuff stone layers climb the cliffs, all witnessed as you first ride by dinghy and then hike on the island. Despite the barren feel, wildlife is abundant here, and this is the most untouched site in the whole Galapagos. Hawks swoop besides diving penguins, huge marine iguanas rest beside flightless cormorants, sea turtles swim past, and a flurry of seabirds soar overhead. Today's excursions are at Punta Vicente Roca and Punta Espinoza on Fernandina. The snorkeling is outstanding at both and arguably the best in the whole archipelago. An afternoon land excursion on Fernandina also provides some staggering photos, the volcanic landscape littered with endemic wildlife.

Galapagos Cruise – Unusual Reptiles on Isabela Island

At Urbina Bay on Isabela Island, you don't need to dive to explore the marine world. The ocean floor uplifted here, leaving vivid corals and shells above sea level. You'll spend the morning at this unique site, a place where dazzling land iguanas and giant tortoises come to feed on what arrived from the depths. Whales are also regularly spotted here and the leisurely early afternoon on the ship offers a great chance to see them. This afternoon's excursions are at Tagus Cove, and you can choose either kayaking or snorkeling before a hike to the mystical center of Darwin Crater. It's another dramatic landscape, with the distant summits of other active volcanos visible from the rim.

Galapagos Cruise – Fascinating Landscapes and Marine Worlds

Land at Rabida's red beach and take a stroll, the unusual volcanic sand filled with the antics of marine iguanas and sea lions. Keep a lookout for Darwin's finches here as several of these famous species can be seen. With their distinct beaks, these finches have come to showcase natural selection better than any other species, with each species reflective of their available food. Snorkel off the beach here and there's a good chance of encountering white-tip reef sharks and manta rays, with the marine world framed by resplendent red rocks. A glass-bottom boat ride is an alternative option here for submarine exploration. Like each day, these activities are followed by a hearty buffet lunch and a few hours to lounge on La Pinta.

You cruise to Santa Cruz Island for an afternoon focused on two very different species. Bright pink flamingos feed in a brackish lagoon while well-camouflaged land iguanas can be seen nesting on the surrounding rocks. As always, you're getting wonderfully close, and there's no second-guessing whether the wildlife will be around. Galapagos wildlife sticks to predictable sites, meaning you're guaranteed to see these strange characters. A three-course dinner is served before the yacht cruises to its next destination. Stargazing from the upper deck can be phenomenal while the barman has a full menu of drinks to extend the evening into the night.

Galapagos Cruise – Wild Giant Tortoises and the Highlands of Santa Cruz

Giant tortoises are unique to their islands in the Galapagos. Each developed a different shaped shell dependent on the island. They were crucial to Darwin's research and today is focused around these gentle giants. In the morning, visit the Charles Darwin Research Station, where researchers explain how endemic species are being conserved. After lunch at the poolside, you weave into the highlands where these huge reptiles lounge on the lush grass. Hundreds can be spotted, from the recent babies to males that weigh over 550 lbs. These are phenomenal creatures, living life at just three heartbeats a minute and capable of surviving a whole year without food or water. They sense vibrations in the earth, so whenever you walk too close, they will hide their necks in their shells. But wait patiently for a moment and the tortoise will open its protective layer for an indelible photo.

Galapagos Cruise – Incredible Snorkeling and History on Floreana Island

Floreana Island was a site for pirates and buccaneers, and its maritime history is lived out in Post Office Bay. For over 200 years, letters were posted by leaving them in a barrel for any departing ships to deliver. A labyrinth of channels extends from this bay and enchants for the rest of the morning excursion. Dinghy rides and snorkeling allow you to observe the creatures that have come up from the oceanic depths. Spend the afternoon at Punta Cormorant and Champion Islet, an extinct volcanic cone that attracts a fabulous collection of marine and birdlife. Snorkel with sea turtles, explore an olivine-crystal beach, and spot more pink flamingos at a serene inland lagoon. As always, all activities are fully guided. Another advantage of cruising on a boat like yours is the quality of the guides. The best guides naturally get promoted to the best boats, meaning you get a team of experts narrating the bewitching stories of the wildlife you encounter.

Galapagos Cruise – Sea Lions, White Sand, and Black Lava on South Plaza Island

Colonies of sea lions fill the Santa Fe beach, spreading out from the sand to the surrounding slabs of volcanic rock. Some are mischievous, ambling towards you and twisting their necks in a show of inquisition. Others are boisterous, flopping their weight around and grunting menacingly. Mothers guard babies with a watchful eye while males clash heads as they seek to win female attention. During the morning, you can kayak and snorkel with these sea lions, as well as standing alongside them on the beach. The endemic Santa Fe iguana is another highlight of the morning walk.

South Plaza Island is equally alive with the antics of sea lions. Its white sand juxtaposes with the black fields of lava that jut along the coastline, then you walk uphill to find land iguanas waiting patiently beneath a grove of prickly-pear cactus trees. Countless birds cover the cliffs, including blue-footed boobies, egrets, and rare lava gulls. After the walk, return onboard for cocktails with the crew and a farewell dinner in the restaurant. Your guide presents a slideshow of photos from the trip, allowing you to relive the wildlife moments from the last week of cruising.

Zuleta – A Luxuriant Hacienda in the Highlands

Depart the Galapagos on a morning flight to Quito, where you're greeted at the airport and transferred into the Highlands and Hacienda Zuleta. Set in 2,000 hectares of green landscape, this historic hacienda offers an idyllic and elegant place to spend your final three nights in Ecuador. The property dates back 500 years although it's only been in presidential hands for the last century. Galo Plaza Lasso used this as his weekend home during his presidency before retiring here permanently until his death in the '80s. While countless stately and royal guests have stayed here, it's only recently been opened to the public. With just a handful of rooms, residing here really feels like you're a guest of the family. Lasso's children and grandchildren greet guests for wine and cheese in the evening, and the hacienda's multiple living rooms offer opulent places to relax beside the fire. After arriving in the late afternoon, enjoy a tour of the property before complimentary drinks and a fine three-course dinner.

Day  11 - 12

Zuleta – Lounging in Presidential History

These final days are all about relaxing at the Hacienda and enjoying the huge surrounding grounds. Various hiking trails lead into a green Andean Valley, where spectacle bears can be spotted, and condors fly overhead. Some take you along cobbles to a condor breeding sanctuary while others rise high into the forested mountains above. A deluxe collection of horses live at the property, and horse riders can select their mount from a menu of different characters. All meals are included, and they're crafted from ingredients produced on the farm. Each is served at your request, and there are always options on the menu. Soft drinks and freshly-squeezed juice are also included, as is the hacienda's unique coffee that's made from fragrant essence. The Lasso family converses with guests during the evening, and there's always a log fire burning, either in your room or in one of the living areas. This is one of Ecuador's finest treasures, a chance to explore history while relaxing in the quiet brilliance of the Highlands.

Quito – Departure from Ecuador

A two-hour private transfer takes you towards Quito and the international airport. The return flight takes you away from Ecuador, but memories of natural wonder and luxury will live on for many years.

Trip Highlights

Detailed Description

Ecuador's historical wonders blend nature with culture. From the quaint streets of World Heritage Quito to the wild cliffs of a remote Galapagos island, the country delights in showcasing its inimitability to visitors. Experiences are exclusive here, whether you're surrounded by endemic birds, horse riding through Highland reserves, or admiring green sea turtles. Elevating the uniqueness of the destinations are three very different pieces of luxury accommodation. Begin your luxury tour of Galapagos Islands and Ecuador at the Plaza Grande, a fabulous hotel with five centuries of Quito's history carved into walls. Spend eight days on La Pinta, a stunning yacht taking you on a cruise to the Western Galapagos Islands. Then soak up the opulence of Hacienda Zuleta, a home that's housed the family of a former Ecuadorian president for over a century.

Quito's charming central streets are an ideal introduction to the country. Your hotel balcony overlooks the central Plaza de la Independencia while the interior takes you back to the excess of early colonial conquerors. A walking tour provides a glimpse of the city's glory, including a church that's completely laced in gold. Three nights in Zuleta are an equally historical way to complete the trip. Set in 2,000 hectares of nature reserve and a working farm, the glorious Hacienda offers sublime relaxation and the chance to horse ride beneath the swooping wings of condors. Spend evenings chatting with the owners, drinking wine and sampling the products from the onsite cheese farm.

La Pinta is one of the Galapagos's most luxurious yachts, offering an elegant cruise through the islands. For eight days, experience luxury Galapagos tours via cruise to the archipelago's most iconic sites, bringing intimate encounters with its surreal wildlife. You'll hike across volcanic lava flows, wander past flamboyant nesting sites, kayak with sea lions, and make daily snorkel and glass-bottom boat excursions. Afternoons and evenings are downtimes on the boat, allowing you to lounge on the spacious deck and watch the islands slowly drift past by. All meals are included, served in the superb dining room while drinks are shared in the open lounge. La Pinta's size offers exclusivity, with space on board allowing you to continue a private experience. Like Quito and Zuleta, the yacht allows you to experience Ecuador's wonder in the grandest of style.
