Planning a trip to a national park can be challenging, but planning to visit five national parks in around 2 weeks can be nerve-wracking.

Now, there’s a stress-free way to plan what very well could be the trip of a lifetime: Let the experts at tour operator Collette work out the details.

Travelers on its 12-day “National Parks of America” tour will have the chance to explore five national parks, beginning with Grand Canyon National Park. What’s more, as the tour makes its way north, travelers will also see famous sights such as Mount Rushmore National Memorial and the Crazy Horse Monument.

“There are so many natural beauties across the Southwest,” Jaclyn Leibl-Cote, president and chief customer experience officer at family-owned tour operator Collette, told TravelAwaits . “Collette travelers get to see them all as part of the ‘Natural Parks of America’ tour. Our product design team works hard to ensure that our tours feature all of the must-see spectacles of the region, including the Grand Canyon and Mount Rushmore.”

The Tour’s Itinerary

Travelers on the National Parks of America tour will have the chance to “experience the grandeur of the American West,” as they explore five national parks over the course of 12 days, according to Collette .

“In Arizona, contemplate the vast beauty of the Grand Canyon, and in Yellowstone, relish iconic sights like Old Faithful and Yellowstone Lake,” Collette explains. “Marvel at the magnitude and color of Zion’s cliffs and the hoodoos and spires at Bryce Canyon.”

The trip also winds through the Bighorn Mountains and the Sioux Nations Territory before reaching Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Monument.

The National Parks of America tour’s highlights include visits to:

  • Grand Canyon National Park
  • Lake Powell
  • Bryce Canyon National Park
  • Zion National Park
  • Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Jackson Hole, Wyoming
  • Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks
  • Old Faithful in Yellowstone
  • Sheridan, Wyoming
  • Bighorn Mountains
  • Crazy Horse Memorial
  • Mount Rushmore

The Tour’s Other Experiences

Collette’s National Parks of America tour, which starts in Scottsdale, Arizona, includes several cultural experiences as well.

For instance, the tour includes a visit to the artists’ colony of Sedona, meetings with Native Americans to discuss their culture and way of life, and a stop at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, which features a tribute to Buffalo Bill Cody.

There’s even a chuck wagon dinner and cowboy entertainment.

Seats, which start at $4,799 per person, are still available for August 19–30, 2023; August 25–September 5, 2023; August 26–September 6, 2023; and other trips in September and October.

You can see the trip’s full itinerary, learn about its highlights, find info about adding excursions, and even book reservations at Collette’s National Parks of America webpage .

Grand Tours of the American Southwest: Rough it from $63 a Day or Go Upscale from $150

By Frommer's Staff

The sunsets over the Grand Canyon are just as awe-inspiring in the fall. The aerial views just as wide and expansive. The tourists mouths just as agape. One of the few things that change is the price of travel packages, which decrease. Take a gander at these trips to the American Southwest that include the Grand Canyon and more.

Collette Vacations (tel. 800/340-5158 ; www.collettevacations.com ) is selling an escorted eight-day " Deserts, Canyons and Casinos " package that includes stops in Arizona's Tucson, Sedona, Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon, as well as a final stay in Las Vegas. Prices start from $899 (before taxes and security fees) for the land-only version; add air, and the base price is set at $1,189 for departures out of Chicago. This popular trip fills up quickly -- in fact, the only two remaining departure dates are February 24 and April 24, 2006. (Departure dates for May 2006 and beyond will be released "in a couple of weeks" according to a Collette reservationist.) Prices include ground transportation in an air-conditioned tour bus, six-nights' accommodations along the route, entrance fees to sights and 11 meals (six breakfasts and five dinners). The tour promises viewings of the Grand Canyon from many different vantage points. Sedona famous for its spiritual importance to Native American and red rocks, is a small Western town set within rocky hills and surrounding mountains known for its beauty. The town's shops are filled with Native American artifacts, Western-themed art, and fashions such as fringed suede jackets and cowboy hats. Flagstaff, a short ride south of Grand Canyon's southern base, is a town filled with youthful energy due to the surrounding colleges and music nightlife.

Sun Trek (tel. 707/523-1800 ; www.suntrek.com ) focuses on small groups (no more than 13 people) traveling in a more rugged fashion (tent camping, for example) in parts of the American West, Alaska, Canada, Mexico and South America. The "Discounts and Specials" section of its site lists several last-minute getaways. Its three-week "The Southwest" tour, departing from San Francisco on October 2, 2005, is based-priced from $1,285. For that price, you'll visit San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles (including Universal Studios), and several national parks and natural sites including the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley in Utah, Lake Powell, Bryce Canyon, Death Valley, Zion National Park and Yosemite. Two nights are hotel stays; the other 18 nights will be spent in tents. If you're interested in a guided tour of the American West, this al- encompassing outing covers all the bases, leaving you with a breadth of knowledge and experience regarding the region. If you take the October 2, 2005 tour, Sun Trek offers a 20% discount. The same tour leaves October 9, 2005, and then resumes again in March 2006.

Green Tortoise Adventures (tel. 800/867-8647, www.greentortoise.com ) offers a "Canyons of the West" tour stopping at some of the more popular rock and canyon-oriented sites along the way. The nine-day, land-only trip costs $449 for the sightseeing and travel and $121 for food and entrance fees to the National Parks; it departs on October 7, 2005. Tours start in San Francisco and end in Las Vegas where connecting flights to San Francisco are available at additional cost. This tour, which travels by bus, stops in Bryce Canyon National Park and Monument Valley, catches a sunset at the Grand Canyon and drives a stretch of Route 66. This is a camping trip, but the interior of the tour bus converts to a rolling hostel that Green Tortoise representatives call a "a really fun slumber party." Travelers can bring their own tents for evenings when the bus stops, but since the tour covers ground during the dead of the night, you'll be sleeping some inside the vehicle.

Colorful, Spirited, Exhilarating

Explore all the places we go in South & Central America

Destination must-sees.

South America ms1

Buenos Aires:

The capital city of Argentina, birthplace of the tango, home to a mosaic of European-styled architecture and South American spirit, it’s nearly impossible not to fall head over heels in love with this very special place. It’s often called the “Paris of Latin America” and lives up to its name with incredible food, fantastic shopping, stunning architecture and culture galore.

South America ms2

Iguazu Falls:

Located at the crossroads of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, Iguazu Falls is thought of as the most beautiful waterfall in the world. The Brazilian side of the falls has a walkway along the canyon that allows visitors to go all the way out on an extension to the lower base of Devil’s Throat.

South America ms3

Machu Picchu:

A visit to one of the world’s most legendary sites is an absolute “must do” for anyone who travels to South America. High in the Andes Mountains in Peru with stunning panoramic views, this spectacular 15th century collection of structures and terraces will leave you awestruck.

Chilean Fjords:

An unforgettable full day cruise will bring you to visit the stunning Serrano and Balmaceda glaciers. As the cruise passes through the Seno Ultima Esperanza, or “Channel of Last Hope,” you’ll see the untouched beauty of Bernardo O’Higgins National Park, Chile’s biggest natural reserve.

Destination Must-Dos

South America md1

Tango Performance, Buenos Aires:

Dance! The Tango is arguably one of the greatest contributions Buenos Aires has made to world culture. The famous dance has somewhat seedy beginnings, as you may expect, but today it’s ultra glamorous and very entertaining. Visitors can enjoy glitzy tango shows, but anyone inspired to perfect their moves can find a willing teacher in salons, cafes and at dance events.

South America md2

Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro:

This is one of the most famous and beautiful beaches in the world. To the left you can see Sugarloaf and Fort Duque de Caxias, and to the right is Copacabana Fort. Walk the 2.2-mile-long beach and try some of the refreshing coconut water while you view the incredible sand sculptures.

Lima, Peru:

Take a walking tour through the historic city center of Lima, Peru to discover the city’s fascinating history. The city center is one of the most important tourist destinations in all of Peru due to the number of historically significant landmarks.

south america md4 1 winery

Santiago, Chile:

Indulge in a visit to a local winery in Santiago and enjoy some lunch complete with a sampling of some of Chile’s renown cabernet and carmenere wines. An expert winemaker will tell you about how wine is made in Chile. Cheers!

Expert Advice

diana

As you prepare to explore beautiful South and Central America, enjoy a casual dress style and be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes! Closed toed shoes are recommended, as many grounds are uneven or are dirt paths. Bring a swimsuit as several of the hotels have swimming pools.

South America e2

You're in for a treat as you sample the delicious flavors of South American cuisine. The climate provides the area with a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and meats to be sampled and savored.

South America e3

Peru provides one of the greatest shopping experiences in all of South America with its diversity of products. You will find many handicraft markets as well as top end ceramic shops, art galleries, jewelry stores and clothing boutiques, particularly in Lima and Cuzco. The Andean heritage is still very alive in Peru. Look for colorful Andean textiles in the form of blankets, ponchos, shawls, and scarves.

Essential South America

See our travelers on tour, brochures that feature our south america tours, destinations in south america.

Peru is one of South America’s premier destinations and not just because of its status of the land of the ancient Incas, the ruins of Machu Picchu and the Peruvian Andes; it’s also full of many cultural, historical and archeologically significant sites. But it is also known for its world-renowned food scene. Higher end restaurants are popping up everywhere with cuisine influenced by Latin America, Europe and even the Amazon and everyone is taking notice.

If you are up for a larger than life experience consider the country of Ecuador. Despite its small size, Ecuador offers much more than one might ever imagine. The diverse landscape includes the Galapagos Islands; nearly 1400 miles of Pacific coastline, grasslands, volcanic mountains and the Amazon Rainforest and jungle. Considered a multicultural wonder, it is home to 44 different indigenous and ethnic groups whose culture and history contribute to the wide variety of delicious cuisine, all adding up to one big adventure for you!

This long and narrow country offers a variety of different ecosystems to explore. From the world’s most arid desert in the north, lush forests and coastal shores, to the frozen land in the south that is home to penguins, the activities are endless. Whether it’s sighting volcanoes, horseback riding or simply sipping on the world renowned wine, an adventure awaits. Speaking of wine, Chile has many vineyards and over 20 different types of grapes – a wine tasting is a must.

Spotlight on South Dakota featuring Mount Rushmore & The Badlands (2024)

Good itinerary; I would have preferred to not drive up to Belle Fourche as it meant we had only 30 minutes at the hotel before leaving for dinner. But the rest of the itinerary was very good. Was not pleased with Kol restaurant: service poor and food not good, All other meals, though not gormet were fine and the regional entertainment was good and fun. Loved the time we were able to spend at the Badlands, Mt Rushmore and Custer SP. Brenda is wonderful.

I was a little nervous before the start of the trip because there were some complications trying to confirm the trip. It was partially my fault because I did book the trip relatively last minute, but I do believe there was some miscommunication on both ends that could have been avoided from the very beginning. The biggest problem was the method of communication. I did not understand that in order for the information to be relayed correctly, you had to message through the communication portal on touradar's website. That was not explicitly made clear, and it took several days and conversations with multiple people to finally realize that. Once that was made clear, everything ran much more smoothly, but I definitely think for the customer's sake especially new customer, someone needs to be very clear in explaining that and confirm with the customer by having them relay it back to them. Thankfully, once everything was booked and confirmed, the trip ran wonderfully! I had such a blast. My tour guide was amazing and the group I was with were incredible. I am definitely looking forward to booking another trip in the future.

Canyon Country featuring Arizona & Utah (Scottsdale, AZ to Las Vegas, NV) (2024)

We started the trip in Phoenix, just as the US was beginning to adjust to the effects of the Corona Virus. For the first few days, the main indication of the problem was decreased attendance at the national parks we visited. But by the next to last day of the tour, we had to cut the trip short because Las Vegas was effectively closed. The bus driver and the tour director were excellent, making sure that we stayed safe as the outside world started to collapse. A special thank you to the last hotel we stayed in (the Majestic View Lodge in Springdale Utah). The manager, head chef, and staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome and to feed us even though just about everything around was closing.

Tour Activity Level

The activity level for this tour:

You’re a leisurely traveler. You typically take it easy and discover the energy of a new place by people-watching or soaking in the atmosphere at a local café. You can climb at least one flight of stairs, board a coach, and walk unassisted at a relaxed pace for up to 60 minutes without difficulty. You can easily handle altitudes up to 5,000 feet.

You like a balanced approach to travel. Walking two to three miles over the course of a day is no problem for you. You can partake in a two-hour leisurely walking tour, covering up to two miles (with included breaks). You can handle a variety of terrains, from cobblestone streets to moderate hills with relative ease and without assistance. You can climb two flights of stairs with ease. There may be 1 to 2 days on this tour when walking tours can cover 3 to 4 miles over uneven terrain. You can handle altitudes up to 6,000 feet.

You’re an on-the-go traveler. You don’t want to miss a thing, so walking and standing for longer periods of time (2-3 hours) isn’t a big deal. A moderately paced two-and-a-half-hour walking tour, covering several miles, hills, and uneven surfaces, is no problem for you. Walking four miles over the course of a day is very doable, as is climbing into and out of various modes of transportation (tuk-tuk, cable car, zodiac, etc.). You can climb three flights of stairs easily and handle altitudes between 6,000 and 9,000 feet. Expect some longer days balanced with free time to recharge or set out on your own adventure. This level is not a fit for travelers who require mobility assistance devices.

You’re ready to seize the day, whatever it may bring. You lead an active life at home (walking, biking, and half or full day hikes are things you may enjoy) and 10,000 steps a day is normal for you. You can handle longer walking tours (more than 3 hours covering 3+ miles at a steady clip) and activities that involve traversing uneven terrain, steep slopes, standing for periods of time, and varying altitudes and temperatures. You don’t mind being on the go with some early starts, late-nights, and full days. You can handle altitudes of 9,000 feet or higher with little to no issue. This level is not appropriate for travelers who use wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility assistance devices.

Southwest Airlines Fare Sale

Travelers hoping to save money on spring flights might want to check out Southwest Airlines. This major airline has a flight sale, with one-way fares as low as $49. However, this sale ends at 11:59 PST on March 14, 2024.

Fare deals are available for select flights taken between March 26, 2024, and June 05, 2024, throughout the continental United States. Select flights from/to Hawaii and San Juan, Puerto Rico, taken between March 26, 2024, and May 22, 2024, are also available for the fare deal. Additionally, this travel deal is only valid for Tuesday and Wednesday travel.

Blackout dates apply, including March 26, 2024, through April 03, 2024, which includes the Easter holiday. However, a deal to celebrate Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and maybe a graduation can be found if you arrive or depart on sale fare days.

Note that a 21-day advance purchase is required to get the travel deal. If booking with points, the government fees from $5.60 per one-way flight will still need to be paid.

While some terms and restrictions apply, plenty of deals can be had. But booking soon is essential to get the $49 deal available for select travel. On top of the two free-checked bags that come as a Southwest perk, traveling with this sale can help save money this spring and early summer.
