Trip of the Month: November 2023

Northern Scotland and the Scottish Highlands is home to enough great golf to fill just about any length itinerary and this trip that our clients booked for May 2024 incorporates all that is great about the area. Big name courses like Royal Dornoch and Cruden Bay are no-brainers. However, it’s just as important to include some lesser-known hidden gems like Moray, Fraserburgh, and even the nine-hole Covesea links, to ensure a complete, all-encompassing golf experience. Likewise, no trip to the area is complete without some non-golfing adventures, and whisky-tasting (in Scotland’s primary Scotch-producing region!) plus a few castle visits (in Scotland’s “Castle Country”) surely add to the experience. This is a trip we were excited about that has it all!

Arrive at the Edinburgh Airport and drive 3 hours north to Inverness.

The Kingsmills Hotel is a 4-star hotel in Inverness, in the heart of the beautiful Scottish Highlands. The hotel’s history actually dates to the 18th century, but today serves as a luxurious holiday retreat with a variety of rooms that mix classic and contemporary features, an indulgent spa, two great eateries – the Inglis and the Conservatory, plus the best stocked whisky bar in town. It’s good old-fashioned Scottish hospitality at its finest.

Drive 35 minutes northeast to Nairn.

The Nairn Golf Club is definitely the hidden gem of the Scottish Highlands. The beach sits ominously along the right side of the first seven holes, and then it’s the gorse that becomes the real hazard. With greens that are some of the best in Scotland and views of the Moray Firth from every hole, it’s simply a joy to play.

Heading east from Inverness towards Nairn sits Cawdor Castle, a historic 14th century castle known for it’s beautiful gardens and connection to Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Nearby, you’ll find plenty more that showcases the beauty and rich military history of the area, including the Culloden Battlefield, Clava Cairns, Fort George, and so much more.

Drive 1 hour and 15 minutes northeast to Lossiemouth.

Moray Golf Club was founded in 1889 and Old Tom Morris himself laid out the venerable old track. Deep revetted bunkers and undulating gorse lined fairways protect par on the natural-feeling layout, which starts and finishes in the heart of Lossiemouth and sits adjacent to the town’s Royal Air Force base. It’s unpretentious and welcoming and quintessential Scottish golf at its finest.

Drive 5 minutes west to Lossiemouth.

Just down the road from the venerable Moray Golf Club, the aptly named Covesea is a true hidden gem along Scotland’s northern Moray Coast. 9 holes bop and weave amongst spectacular rock formations in a setting that is truly hard to beat.

Drive 1 hour north to Dornoch.

If you have looked into course rankings, you know the critically acclaimed Championship Course at Royal Dornoch has a lot of fans. Somewhat secluded in the Scottish highlands, the setting feels timeless but despite being one of the Scotland’s oldest golf clubs, the out-and-back course design feels a bit more complex that many of its contemporaries. The trademark raised greens actually match the shape of the entire property, so both your touch and endurance will be tested.

The Glenmorangie Distillery is located just south of Dornoch in Tain, alongside the Moray Firth. Swirling with aroma and flavour, the facility is the beating heart of whisky making that dates to 1843. Immersive distillery tours pull the curtain on Scotland’s tallest stills, with expert guides willing to share knowledge built across generations.

Drive 15 minutes northeast to Castle Stuart.

Unlike most traditional Scottish clubs, which had to be built in or near local town centers for logistical reasons, the site on which Castle Stuart sits was selected solely for its aesthetics. The property sits overlooking the Moray Firth and Black Isle beyond, and it’s evident that both the course and the clubhouse were designed to feature the views. Its not all looks though, as the genius of Gil Hanse crafted a championship test that has now hosted four Scottish Opens, and counting.

The legitimacy of monster sightings might be debated, but there is no doubting the stunning beauty of the British Isles’ largest lake. Cruises depart from various loch harbors and feature tales of history, scenic views of Urquhart Castle and, of course, possible Nessie sightings.

Drive 2 hours and 30 minutes east to Aberdeen.

Undoubtedly Scotland’s greatest whisky-producing region, the small Highlands region of Speyside is home to over half of all Scotch distilleries and produces many of the world’s best single-malts. The area along the River Spey is beautiful and important, as Scotch production has played a huge role in shaping the local economy for centuries. Its a must-visit for the attentive visitor.

The Marcliffe Hotel is a 5-star hotel located in the leafy suburbs 15 minutes west of Aberdeen. The property is a passion project of dedicated owner Stewart Spence and he leaves no stone unturned to ensure a luxurious experience for visiting guests: stylish rooms and common areas full of character, fine-dining at the Conservatory Restaurant, an extensive wine and whisky list, a relaxing spa, and outstanding, friendly service that keeps guests coming back year after year.

Drive 20 minutes northeast to Aberdeen.

The club’s championship Balgownie Course shares a lot of the same attributes as Scotland’s more famous Open hosts and itself hosted both the Senior Open and Scottish Open. It’s a historic members club, one of the oldest in Scotland, and the history is palpable in the venerable old clubhouse. The demanding course itself is obviously the main attraction though, and many have suggested the front nine, which plays closest to the North Sea through imposing dunes, is the best in Scotland.

Aberdeenshire, Scotland’s Castle Country, has more castles per square mile than any other part of the country. A day along “Castle Trail” surely starts with the cliff-top Dunnottar Castle but any number of popular castles are also nearby (Drum, Crathes, Fraser and Fyvie, Slains). Adventurous castle goers could also head west past the fairytale Craigievar Castle to the mighty Balmoral Castle, home of the Royal Family.

Drive 50 minutes north to Cruden Bay.

Cruden Bay is our pick for the most underrated course in Scotland. The club itself is authentic and welcoming. The scenery is stunning with views of the North Sea from elevated coastal terrain. And most memorable is the layout itself, which is quirky and tons of fun.

Drive 40 minutes north to Fraserburgh.

The links of Fraserburgh are home to the world’s 7th oldest golf club (which dates to 1777!) and are beautifully and naturally set near Scotland’s northeast coast at the windy convergence of the Moray Firth and the North Sea. The great James Braid helped with the design, which tumbles across undulating fairways amongst substantial coastal dune and truly epitomized the classic Scottish links experience.

Drive 1 hour and 30 minutes south to Carnoustie.

The 7-time Open host showcases all that is wonderful and challenging about links golf: undulating terrain, riveted pot bunkers, firm and fast fairways, and of course the Barry Burn which famously swallowed Jean an de Velde whole during his infamous collapse at the 99 Open. You will struggle to shoot your handicap and you will love every minute of it.

Drive 1 hour and 30 minutes southwest to the Edinburgh Airport.

The DoubleTree by Hilton at the Edinburgh Airport is just a half-mile from the Edinburgh Airport and features updated rooms, a pool and spa, The Space bar and lounge with seasonal dining options, plus a complimentary airport shuttle. It’s ideal for a stress-free final night in Scotland.

They organised 3 car seats for the kids and they were at Nadi airport waiting for us. The best bit was on the return from Shangri la when Nadi flooded yesterday. Another supplier (will with hold their name) stranded their passengers and we were told by other people and the hotel we would not fly as the road to the airport was flooded. So I spoke to Rebecca at Mick's who communicated with me regularly on WhatsApp and they organised everything. The collected our two families and our luggage and drove us in the normal van to an agreed point where they waited until the truck arrived, yes they organised for us to get safely accross the flooded parts of the road in a truck as the road was under water, then once on the other side another van met us and they helped get kids and bags quickly on our way. It wasn't glamorous at times but got us there only just in time for the flight with all the changes and cars blocking the road. Thanks again for checking we got there ok too. Booking with Micks was easy, however when we arrived at the airport the driver was no where to be seen. We waited, and eventually emailed and called (going through the kind concierge desk at the Nadi airport). They said they would be there in 10-15 minutes. We waited 30 more and ended up going with another driver. I emailed Micks to let them know we found other arrangements and to cancel our return trip. I got an email that the driver was finally there over an hour after we arrived. They then offered to refund me 50%. After multiple emails back and forth I finally got a full refund. The other company we ended up going with was less expensive (even with the “discount” Micks offered) and we ended up booking an amazing private cultural tour through them. We got into the van to find a flimsy, loose fitted seat that was nothing of the kind. There was no added protection whatsoever for our baby in the event of an incident. This made us anxious. My sisters and I can ride very well, we didn’t just want to walk in a line. This company was able to organise a local race horse for me. I got to gallop a beautiful grey stallion down the beach, in and out of the water. When I got back I asked to remove the saddle and took him swimming in the ocean. I told them I would do it at my own risk. What an amazing experience. They have horses for all levels. If you can ride, this may be the only place for u. I did try a couple of other village horses but cut the ride off after 5mins. Make sure you pre organise if u want a spirited horse. I gave them 24hrs notice. Finally got through today (2 weeks later) on the telephone and the best response was we will email you! This is a dodgy operation. I made a point of checking the arrivals to see if anyone from Mick's tours were waiting for me so that I could apologise, there was absolutely no-one there so they clearly got my message that the transfer was cancelled. I was in contact with Mick's tour and always received a response, nothing was too hard. Hotel transfers from Nadi to Doubletree Resort and return a week later all went very smooth. Our day trip to the giant tree, Mud Baths and Village Tour was great in an air-conditioning car was perfect. We never felt rushed at any location or hassled to be back to the car and our hotel, even got to go into Nadi to look around. We recommend for service and price. Tips: Giant Tree was very cool and peaceful - take good walking shoes. Mud Baths - really good experience. Once in a lifetime thing to do while on holidays. Village Tour - what better way to give back and meet the locals. Nadi - busy and lots of fun. Good time to stock up of anything you may want or need back at the hotel/resort. Unfortunately to an unsuspecting Australian we thought $1500 FJD was acceptable although it was not. We were picked up from Denarau and taken to Tau village which was just over an hour or so. We were charged $10 FJD for Sarongs for men and women ( this was outlined ) although they were cut up pieces of material not sarongs. We were expecting a traditional culture tour, no one was dressed up in traditional clothing. No “ warriors “ we were asked to donate to the church, we were then asked to pay $5 per coconut. They sang a couple of songs and then they asked us to donate for singing those songs. We did not get a school tour because it was school holidays but still had to pay full price. We were cooked a lovo lunch in what looked like a rubbish burn pile. All up we spent $1700 Fijian on this tour not including the necklaces we purchased. I felt this was a huge money grab and felt they were so rude constantly asking for money. The things we got should have been included for $1500 We then spoke to the resort they said the tours should cost no more than $200 per group. I have received a lot of messages saying the company is renowned for ripping off tourists. Always book with your resort for tours. When we arrived the car was waiting but there was no seat, and the guy kept trying to upsell us to other tours the whole time. Then for our return trip, even though we confirmed with them they day prior, the car never showed up. And we had no contact from them to say they were running late. Meet the driver out front of the airport with a 9 seater bus insisting we would all fit in it. After refusing to get into one bus we had to wait an hour for another bus to pick the rest of us up. Also used this company for my husbands bucks party a few days later to go from the Warwick resort to Nadi and again confirmed a bus for the 18 people and was sent a mini bus and car to all fit in. Going back from Nadi to the Warwick resort the wheel come off the bus. The passengers had to make their own way back to the resort. I organised a return transfer 2 days before our trip with Mick's through the lovely Rebecca who was super quick to act on her emails. Once we arrived in Nadi, It was quite busy and dark on our arrival (8:30pm), so we were not able to find our drivers for the first 5 mins, however the information desk staff were able to assist. Rebecca and Api greeted us warmly and drove us to a local market for some quick supplies, and then to our hotel. On our transfer back to the airport for our return flight, Abel drove us. He was waiting for us at 6:15am on the dot for our morning flight. As first time visitors to Fiji, we were not aware of how terrible traffic gets, so we were EXTREMELY grateful for Abel's quick thinking and amazing navigation to get us to the airport with plenty of time to spare! 200% recommend booking your transfers and tours with Mick's! Quiet getaway with our family....we had a fantastic time at this cabin in Blue Ridge, GA. There were a total of six of us, two adults and four kids. The accommodations were super comfortable. Let me tell you, the pictures don't do this place justice. The views are incredible and the house is immaculate and so nice. This home is new and has lots of room. The decor was fabulous. Loved the carport. The architecture flowed well throughout and was very detailed. The positioning of this cabin relative to the Mountain View as a backdrop was perfect. The hot tub was awesome. The online photos of this cabin were spot on. I could go on and on.... The cabin was adequately stocked. This cabin is a bit pricey, but well worth it when you see what it has to offer. The directions to the cabin was very accurate. The GPS got us very close to the cabin and I mean very close. You could tell a lot of thought went into the construction, build, and layout of this cabin. This was our first visit to EBR and I don't think we could have picked a better home in the mountains to stay at to celebrate our wedding anniversary.
