All about Off-Peak tickets

Here’s what you need to know about our Off-Peak tickets.

What are Off-Peak tickets?

Off-Peak tickets are for trains that run at quieter times of the day. They’re great value if you don’t need to travel at busy times.

Are Off-Peak tickets single or return?

You can use them for both a single and a return journey. If you book a return, you can travel back on any day within 30 days of your outward journey. So that’s a nice bit of wiggle room.

When can I use Off-Peak tickets?

You can use Off-Peak tickets on any journey during these times:

  • Outside the rush hours on Monday-Thursday
  • All day Friday if your journey starts or ends at London Euston only
  • All day Saturday on all journeys
  • All day Sunday on all journeys

Want Off-Peak tickets for Monday – Thursday?

Check your journey below. Please note some journeys have extra restrictions on Off-Peak tickets.

See Off Peak train times

When can I buy Off-Peak tickets?

Can i reserve a seat.

Yes of course, just choose one when you book.

All about Super Off-Peak tickets

Super-Off Peak tickets are even better value than Off-Peak tickets. However they are only for quiet times of the day and for journeys to and from London Euston or to and from Milton Keynes Central.

What are Super Off-Peak tickets?

Super-Off peak tickets are for trains that run outside busy times and for certain journeys only.

Are Super Off-Peak tickets single or return?

Both. Want a return? You can travel back on any day within 30 days of your outward journey.

When can I use Super Off-Peak tickets?

Only on these journeys:

  • Trains to or from London Euston, Monday- Sunday
  • Trains to or from Milton Keynes Central, Monday-Sunday

Only at these times:

  • If you’re travelling towards London, your train must not arrive at London Euston before 1pm
  • If you’re travelling away from London, your train must not leave London Euston between 4pm and 7pm

These times apply even if you’re leaving or joining the train at Milton Keynes Central.

When can I buy Super Off-Peak tickets?

You can buy these tickets at any time.

Yes, just pick your seat when you book.

What if I want a different journey?

You may be able to get Super-Off Peak tickets from another train company. You can still book through us.

When are Off-Peak trains?

During the week, Off-Peak travel times fall outside the morning and afternoon rush hours. So, if you don’t need to be at your destination at 9am, you can save money by booking an Off-Peak ticket. It also applies all day on Fridays for customers travelling to and from London Euston*, as well as throughout the weekend on all routes.

*Excluding journeys to/from Milton Keynes Central

GET EVEN MORE WITH CLUB AVANTI

Club Avanti offers everything from 10% off your next journey, to a free First Class or Standard Premium ticket.

Terms and conditions apply

Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak?

Choose off-peak if:.

  • You want to save money on your ticket
  • You’re happy to travel outside popular times
  • You don’t want to be restricted to trains running to and from London Euston or Milton Keynes Central

Choose Super-Off Peak if:

  • You want to save more
  • You’re happy with a smaller choice of trains
  • You’re happy to have more restrictions on the time you can travel
  • Your journey starts and ends at either London Euston or Milton Keynes Central

When can I travel with an Off-Peak return ticket?

You can book your Off-Peak tickets at any time, but you must travel during the middle of the day, in the evenings or at any time on weekends, avoiding the morning and late-afternoon rush hour. Our weekend Off-Peak hours start from Friday morning for Euston departures, meaning customers can travel on any train from as early as 05:05 to make the most of the weekend.

Off-Peak Friday offer excludes journeys from Milton Keynes to London Euston. Our journey planner will always show you Off-Peak tickets for valid journey times, so just enter your journey details to find your best ticket options.

Can I get a refund for Off-Peak tickets?

If you can no longer use your ticket, our Off-Peak are both fully refundable, minus a £10 administration fee. If you purchased your ticket from our website or app, you can apply for a refund through the My Account section of our website.  For more information on Refunds then please use the link below:

Click here for more information on refunds

Can I break my journey?

Break of journey is allowed on the outward and return portions of Off-Peak tickets unless otherwise indicated by a restriction shown against the ticket's validity code.

You may start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station along the route of travel on Off-Peak tickets unless the ticket restriction for the journey you are making does not allow it.

Many of our Off-Peak restrictions involve the time you arrive or depart London Euston. As such, if you plan to break your journey further north, you may be able to travel at what's locally a Peak time, but is still valid for your ticket if you've left London or will arrive in London at an Off-Peak time.

For example, you could be travelling from Shrewsbury to London but would like to break your journey in Birmingham. An early morning journey solely from Shrewsbury to Birmingham might be Peak on its own but, if your ticket's restrictions only refer to arrival times in London, you can make one leg of your journey at 'Peak' time, break your journey in Birmingham, then arrive later in London as per your ticket restrictions.

If you intend to start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station, please call 03457 48 49 50 to check if it is available on your specific journey.

Fare for everyone

If you're travelling on one of our trains, you must have a ticket that's valid for travel on that service. To make it fair for everyone, there are different ticket types available and our team are onboard to help with any queries.

Manchester’s tram network, known as the Metrolink, is an extensive and efficient system that covers many parts of the city and its surrounding suburbs. With over 57 miles of track and 92 stations, it is the largest tram network in the UK, and it continues to expand.

It’s a reliable mode of transportation for those who want to explore restaurants (family restaurants manchester) and bars (bars manchester) in the city centre or enjoying art galleries (art gallery manchester) and shopping malls (shopping mall manchester) near the suburbs.

For first-time visitors to Manchester, the tram network can be a little overwhelming at first. With a lot of routes, stops, and destinations to choose from, it can be challenging to navigate the system.

However, with a little bit of preparation and some insider knowledge, using the trams can be a breeze!

With this guide, you’ll be able to use the trams with confidence and enjoy a smooth and stress-free journey.

A Guide to Manchester Trams How do Manchester trams work

The Manchester tram system operates every day, with a frequency of one tram every 12 minutes on all lines.

If a stop is served by more than one line, trams will arrive more frequently. You can view the Metrolink map to check which line(s) serve your stop.

Manchester Tram Times

The operating hours of the tram system are from 06:00 to 00:00 every Monday to Saturday and 07:00 to 00:00 every Sunday.

To support commuters, there are also additional peak services for busy tram stops. Here are some specific schedules for some routes.

Unfortunately, Manchester trams are not free. As with most public transport systems, you will need to purchase a ticket to use the trams.

However, the good news is that the ticket prices are quite reasonable, and there are several options available to suit your needs.

When travelling on Manchester’s tram system, it’s important to know the different ticket options available to you and their corresponding prices.

Manchester Tram Prices' Homepage

Kindly note that the prices listed above are accurate as of March 2023. These are subject to change without notice.

Where can you buy tram tickets in Manchester

If you’re planning to ride the Manchester trams, it’s important to know that you must have a valid ticket before boarding. Fortunately, there are several ways to purchase tickets in the city

Tram passes for Manchester Masterlink can be bought at ticketing machines, in PayPoint Outlets, via the pay-as-you-go app and system, and through the Get Me There website.

1. Tram stops ticketing machines

At any tram stop, you can easily purchase a variety of tram tickets and travelcards from a ticket machine. These machines accept credit or debit cards.

On  top of that, it also accepts contactless payments up to £45 and cash with change given.

Here, you can buy single tickets or travelcards for 1-day, weekend, 7-day, and 28-day journeys for adults, children, concessions, and families.

2. PayPoint Outlets

PayPoint Outlets' Homepage

PayPoint outlets can be found in various local shops, convenience stores, newsagents, and petrol stations throughout Greater Manchester. You can easily identify these outlets by looking for the PayPoint sign.

Apart from travel tickets, PayPoint outlets offer a wide range of payment services — making it ideal for both residents and tourists.

When it comes to purchasing travel tickets, you can choose from a variety of options, including System One travelcards for 7-day or 28-day travel, Metrolink tram season tickets, and Wayfarer tickets.

Simply visit a PayPoint outlet and ask for the type of ticket you need.

3.  Contactless Pay-As-You-Go

One option is to use the contactless pay-as-you-go system. This involves using smart readers located at tram stops to pay for your journey.

Before boarding the tram, you simply touch your card or mobile device to the reader to begin your trip. When you reach your destination stop, you must touch out with the same card or device to complete your journey.

If you’re travelling with others, each person will need to use a separate card or device. Unless each of the riders has their own card or device,  this may not be a suitable choice when travelling as a group.

Some of the accepted modes of payment for contactless pay-as-you-go include Mastercard, Maestro, Visa, V PAY, smartphones with a mobile wallet, smartwatches with a mobile wallet, and other devices with a mobile wallet.

4. Get Me There Mobile Ticket Application

Get Me There Mobile Ticket Application's Homepage

Another convenient way to purchase tram tickets in Manchester is through the Get Me There mobile ticket app. You can easily download the app from getmethere.com or mobile application stores.

This app allows you to buy weekend, both 7-day and 28-day travelcards for Metrolink trams without needing to purchase a printed ticket.

However, for single and return journeys, using a contactless card or device with smart readers on stops to pay for journeys as you go is the easiest option.

5. Get Me There Website

Get Me There Website's Homepage

One way to purchase and store tram tickets in Manchester is through the getmethere.com website. You can select from a variety of travelcards and tickets online and save them on a smart card.

This method is particularly useful if you want to buy a day ticket or season ticket in advance. You can purchase a ticket up to 7 days in advance, and it will be available for collection from the day after you buy it.

This is a convenient option as commuters can simply use a smart reader at a tram stop to retrieve their ticket.

Additionally, when you create an account, you can either request a Get Me There card or link a compatible smart card you already have to your account.

Can you use a train ticket on the tram

Visitors can use their train tickets on the tram in Manchester. If you have a train ticket that takes you anywhere in Greater Manchester and into Manchester city centre, you can use it on the trams in the Metrolink city zone without any extra cost.

This means that you can save money on your transportation costs by using a train ticket to travel to Manchester and then using the tram to get around the city centre, especially if you have multiple trip tickets.

However, it’s important to note that this offer is only valid in the city zone, so if you need to travel outside of this area, you will need to purchase a separate tram ticket or travelcard.

Other Tips to Remember when Using Manchester Tram's Homepage

However, to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey, there are some important things to keep in mind when using the Manchester tram. Here are other things to keep in mind before riding the Manchester tram for the first time.

1. Purchase your ticket before boarding the tram

Unlike buses, you cannot purchase tickets on board the tram. Make sure to buy your ticket from a ticket machine, the Get Me There mobile app or website, or a PayPoint outlet before boarding.

Note : If you do not have a valid ticket or pass, you could be fined a minimum of £50.

2. Keep your ticket with you at all times

If you purchase a physical ticket, make sure to keep it with you throughout your journey. Losing your ticket could result in a fine.

Alternatively, you can store your ticket on your phone using the get me there app, but make sure your phone is fully charged to avoid any issues.

3. Check which line(s) serve your stop

The Metrolink system has multiple lines, and not all trams stop at every station.

4. Be prepared for bus replacement services

Sometimes, tram services are disrupted due to planned engineering works or unexpected incidents. In such cases, bus replacement services may be provided to ensure that passengers can still get to their destination.

Be prepared for bus replacement services' Homepage

The maximum speed of a Manchester tram is 50 miles per hour (80 km/h). However, the actual speed depends on several factors such as the route, the traffic, and the safety regulations.

All lines have a frequency of one tram every 12 minutes. However, stops served by more than one line will have trams arriving more frequently.

It is important to tap out when you leave the tram, or you may be charged a higher fare than you need to pay — £50. If you forget to tap out, you should contact Metrolink customer services as soon as possible to explain the situation and resolve the issue.

The operating hours of Manchester trams are from 06:00 to 00:00 every Monday to Saturday and 07:00 to 00:00 every Sunday.

Terms and conditions for using your TfGM concessionary travel pass

  • Under the rules of the national bus concessionary travel scheme set out in the Transport Act 2000, your pass entitles you to free off-peak travel on local bus services in England.
  • Under the ‘Local Concessionary Travel Scheme’ your pass entitles you to travel for free on all buses within Greater Manchester between 9.30am and midnight, Monday to Friday, and all day at weekends and on public holidays. Your pass also entitles you to add tram and train to your pass, for an annual charge. This gives you unlimited off-peak travel on Metrolink and trains within Greater Manchester. You can then travel on Metrolink trams and trains after 9.30am on Monday to Friday, and all day on weekends and public holidays.
  • You can get more information about concessionary travel for Greater Manchester residents from www.tfgm.com or any TfGM Travelshops.
  • You must touch your concessionary pass to the smart reader when boarding a bus, and when you start and end each journey on Metrolink trams, in order to validate your entitlement to free travel. You must do this whenever you are entitled to travel free of charge. Metrolink readers are at every stop on the network.
  • Always show your concessionary pass to the bus driver, ticket inspector or train conductor where there is no smart reader present or if it is not working.
  • You must present your concessionary pass on request to a TfGM or transport operator official.
  • Do not allow another person use your concessionary pass. Your right to free or discounted travel is not transferable. Your concessionary pass does not cover the travel of carers or companions.

  • When using your concessionary pass on any service, you must also comply with and observe the passenger regulations, conditions of carriage and bye-laws of that service (as applicable).
  • Your concessionary pass is valid up to the expiry date shown on the front of it, as long as you continue to live in Greater Manchester, or until we decide otherwise.
  • The photograph on your concessionary pass must be a true and current likeness of yourself.
  • Your concessionary pass is not valid if it is damaged or altered in any way.
  • Your pass can be taken from you if it is not used in compliance with these terms and conditions.
  • If you are told that your concessionary pass is no longer valid for travel, you must pay for your journey. The transport operator may retain your concessionary pass in such circumstances, and you should contact TfGM to request a replacement.
  • You must contact Transport for Greater Manchester immediately if:
  • your concessionary pass is lost or stolen or you move home;
  • you believe your concessionary pass is faulty (for example, it is frequently rejected by smart readers);
  • you are no longer eligible for concessionary travel;
  • your concessionary pass has expired.
  • Do not use your concessionary pass after it has expired or has been replaced.
  • Do not damage or deface your concessionary pass. Damaged concessionary passes should be returned to TfGM and a replacement applied for, which you may have to pay for.

What are the off-peak hours for trains in the UK?

A Train Station Platform with people walking onto a trian.

If you’re keen to spread your wings and travel more in 2022, after two years of Covid restrictions, you could do a lot worse than venture somewhere by train – especially if you’re planning a break somewhere in the UK.

Rail travel can be expensive in this country, but you can make big savings by choosing to travel off-peak.

But, what hours count as ‘off-peak?’

Please be seated.

What are off-peak train tickets?

Man inserting a subway pass.

Off-peak train tickets are cheaper than ‘anytime’ tickets and can be used at less busy times of the day.

There will be restrictions on your travel date or time of day, and you’ll only be able to travel on specific routes or companies.

When are trains off-peak in the UK?

While exact times can vary depending on the provider, there is a general rule of thumb for what hours are considered to be off-peak.

Off-peak tends to begin at 9:30am from Mondays to Fridays in cities and large towns and 9am across the rest of the rail network.

In London, off-peak times run from Monday to Friday from the first service to 6:30am, and then again from 9:30am to 4pm, and after 7pm

Weekends and bank holidays operate off-peak fares all day across the country.

You can use the National Rail journey planner to choose your times and tickets to see if off-peak applies to your desired travel time.

off peak travel manchester

Available at quieter times of the day, Off-Peak tickets offer great value and flexibility.

You can buy them prior to the day of travel or just before your journey. Even better, you can use them any time at weekends and bank holidays.

Using your Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak tickets depends on your journey and day of travel. You can get more information and ticket options using our online booking tool or app.

In general, Off-Peak hours begin at 09:30 from Monday to Friday in cities and large towns, and at 09:00 everywhere else. Restriction applies to Single, and both outbound and a return portion of a return ticket, Super Off-Peak tickets will have further restrictions. If in doubt, please check https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ticket-types/ticket-validity-finder/ to verify your ticket for your selected journey.

Find the right train ticket for you.

We've designed a whole range of ticket types to suit your travel needs. If you're simply looking for the cheapest fare, book an Advance ticket and you could save over 50%. You can grab a bargain with our off-peak trains too. Save more money by buying your train tickets online with us or through our  TPExpress app . Here you'll benefit from no booking or card fees and get an automatic seat reservation too. Booking through our app also gives you the option to download the tickets straight to your phone. 'Appy days. Let's find the right train ticket for you:

Advance Purchase (AP) train tickets are your route to finding the best train fare and offer savings of over 50%. Advance tickets go on sale up to 24 weeks ahead of the journey and are available to purchase up to 15 minutes before departure on most routes, subject to availability. They are always one-way. Advance tickets are available for both Standard and First Class train travel and they are only valid on the specific train service chosen at booking. Make sure you pay attention to the specific time and date written on your ticket. They are train company specific, so you’d only be able to use an Advanced Purchase ticket stating ‘TPE Only’ on a TransPennine Express service, unless the ticket stated ‘and connections’ (meaning travel is allowed on appropriate connecting services owned by other train operating companies). You can now  change your Advance train ticket  for free and will only have to pay the difference between an old and new fare.

The Airport Advance is just the ticket for travel to and from Manchester Airport.

It works the same as a regular Advance, but it’s more flexible in case your flight to the UK experiences any delays. Just make sure you book your train ticket from the Airport at least an hour after your scheduled arrival time; that way, if your flight is delayed, you'll still be able to travel up to three hours after the time on your train ticket. If the next service to your destination is timed to depart more than three hours after the original departure time you may use this service. If your flights delayed, don't forget to endorse your ticket at the Manchester Airport station ticket office before you board the train.

These are the most flexible train tickets with no restrictions on the time of day you can travel between your chosen stations. Due to this flexibility, they can be a little more expensive. There are four types of anytime ticket: Anytime Day Single  tickets and Anytime Day Return tickets need to be used on the date shown on the ticket. Single tickets can only be used for one journey. For return tickets, you’ll need to return on the same day you departed. You can travel at any time that day and up until 04:29 the following morning. Anytime Return tickets (also known as Open Return) allow you to travel within five days of the date shown on your train ticket and return journeys must be made within one calendar month. Anytime Short Return  have the same conditions as the Anytime Return but the outward journey is valid for one day not five. The return journey can still be made within one calendar month. All four types of Anytime ticket are available for both Standard and First Class train travel, and can only be used once each. You can download the tickets on your mobile with the TPE App, but if you prefer the physical thing you can opt to receive your tickets by post, or collect your pre-paid tickets from ticket vending machines at participating stations.

Off-Peak travel offers cheaper train tickets during quieter times of day. There are four types of Off-Peak ticket: Off-Peak Day Single  tickets, Off-Peak Day Return tickets, Off-Peak Return tickets and Super Off-Peak tickets. They can all be bought in advance or on the same day. Off-Peak Day tickets can be Single or Return. They are only valid for one journey on the specific date shown. For return tickets, this means you must return on the same day you departed (or before 4:29am the following day). Off-Peak Return tickets are different. They allow you to travel after a certain ‘peak’ time in the morning. This peak time can change between train operating companies so always check before you travel. They also allow you to return within one calendar month of your outbound journey (or up until 4:29am after the last day of validity), as long as you travel during off peak hours. Super Off-Peak tickets are just like Off-Peak Return tickets but they have different time restrictions. Peak times vary between operators and ticket types so make sure you check the terms of your ticket before travelling. To check, you need to look for the two character restriction code on your ticket e.g. XX. You can then visit www.nationalrail.co.uk/XX (replacing 'XX' with your code) for the full conditions of your ticket.

If you travel regularly along the same route, buying a Season Ticket online is the best way to save time and money on your train tickets. Season Tickets are available to buy on a Smart card in stations or on our website and they can be topped up online. Regular Season Tickets are available for seven days, a calendar month, and any period between one and 12 months, and can be used for travel any day within the validity of the ticket. They must be used on routes between the stations stated on the ticket before the expiry date and be accompanied by a photocard. There are lots of benefits of having a Season Ticket , including free First Class travel on TransPennine Express weekend services for no extra cost for those with monthly or longer Season tickets. Flexi Season Tickets offer eight days of travel in 28 days - any time between the same two stations. It’s a flexible solution that’s perfect if you need to travel to work a couple of times a week at peak time Monday to Friday. Pay for the days you need, spend the rest wherever you like. These tickets are generally only available with a Smart card but some retailers may offer it as a ticket or eticket. These tickets are available to anyone over 16 and 50% discounts are available to those with a 16-17 Saver and Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Card. When can I travel? Which are off peak times?

Travelling into London? You can travel on any train arriving at London Waterloo (or any station in zones 1 to 6) from 10:00.

If you're travelling away from London, Standard Class and First Class tickets have slightly different rules:

Standard Class : travel on any train leaving London Waterloo from 09:00

First Class : travel on any train leaving London Waterloo from 09:00, except trains leaving between 16:00 and 19:00. You also won't be able to travel on:

  • Trains leaving Vauxhall between 16:04 and 19:04
  • Trains leaving Clapham Junction between 16:07 and 19:09

You can sometimes travel earlier, particularly if you're travelling long-distance - these are called easements. For the best way to find out which trains you can use your ticket on, book through our website.

When can I buy an Off-Peak ticket?

You can buy anytime from twelve weeks before you travel, right up to when you arrive at the station from the ticket office or machines. To help make sure customers don't get on the wrong train with a ticket that's not valid, some of our ticket machines won't sell Off-Peak tickets until shortly before they can be used.

Are there any extra discounts on Off-Peak tickets?

With our super off peak tickets you can save 34% extra with all railcards on Standard Class Off-Peak fares and up to 34% on First Class Off-Peak fares if you hold a Senior , HM Forces or Disabled Persons Railcard . You can also save on child tickets for all Off-Peak fares!

If you’re travelling in a group of 3 to 9 people, you can save a third on tickets with GroupSave discounts.

How can I buy an Off-Peak ticket?

The easiest way to buy your ticket is through our website, on our app or at any ticket office or machine.

Find out more about ways to buy your ticket.

Can I break my journey with an Off-Peak ticket?

Generally, yes. You'll normally be allowed to break your journey with an off-peak ticket. Some journeys may mean that you can't, and you should check the full restrictions on your ticket to see if you can or not.

Help! I need to travel on a different train - can I change my off peak ticket?

Off-Peak tickets give you some flexibility - if you can still use an Off-Peak ticket on the train you now want to travel on, you can just catch that one instead!

If you want to travel during peak time, you'll just need to pay the difference between the Off-Peak fare and the Anytime fare. There's no admin fee to pay but you will need to do this before you travel - even if you plan to do it on board the train, you might still be liable for a Penalty Fare if you board without making sure your ticket is valid.

If you've been delayed by the railway (for example, if you miss your connecting service because of a delay to your train) then you can use your ticket on the next train. If your ticket wouldn't normally be valid on that train (for example, if it's a peak time train) then speak to the ticket office or on-board team to get your ticket stamped or signed to allow you to travel.

If you've been delayed by something that's not within our control, then you can use your ticket on the next Off-Peak service.

If a delay on one of our trains means you end up being 15 minutes late or more to your destination, you may be entitled to claim compensation under our Delay Repay scheme.

There are engineering works now and I don't want to travel. Can I get a refund?

If there's a change in journey times or mode of travel (a bus replacement service) and you no longer want to travel you can claim a full refund on the unused tickets from your original retailer.

If you're buying your tickets more than six weeks before you travel, we always recommend that you check timetables again at the six-week mark. This is because of changes to how the industry plans trains for engineering work.

Chairman Loudermilk Releases January 6 Initial Findings Report

March 11, 2024.

WASHINGTON   - Today, Committee on House Administration's Subcommittee on Oversight Chairman Barry Loudermilk (GA-11) released his "Initial Findings Report" on the events of January 6, 2021 as well as his investigation into the politicization of the January 6th Select Committee.

Click here to view the initial findings report.

Click   here   to view the one pager.

Upon release of the report, Chairman Loudermilk released the following statement:   "For nearly two years former Speaker Nancy Pelosi's January 6 th   Select Committee promoted hearsay and cherry-picked information to promote its political goal – to legislatively prosecute former President Donald Trump,"  said Chairman Loudermilk.  "It was no surprise that the Select Committee’s final report focused primarily on former President Trump and his supporters, not the security failures and reforms needed to ensure the United States Capitol is safer today than in 2021. "The American people deserve the entire truth about what caused the violent breach at the United States Capitol of January 6, 2021. It is unfortunate the Select Committee succumbed to their political inclinations and chased false narratives instead of providing the important work of a genuine investigation. In my committee’s investigation, it is my objective to uncover the facts about January 6, without political bias or spin. My report today is just the beginning."
