Warner Bros. Discovery Poised for Turnaround With Strong IP and Streaming Strategy, Analyst Says

warner brothers studio tour instagram

Benchmark  analyst Matthew Harrigan reiterated a Buy rating on  Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc  (NASDAQ:WBD) with a price target of $20.

The re-rating follows this weekend's robust $81.5 million Dune: Part Two U.S. opening.

The market is averse to recognizing an ongoing turnaround at the Warner Bros. studio and a fair likelihood that DTC can generate sustainable $1 billion+ in EBITDA post-2025, Harrigan stated.

Assuming creative and strategic execution, Warner Bros. Discovery will benefit enormously from the studio/DTC/network triad with evergreen IP and an unparalleled film and TV library, somewhat moderating the linear rating and advertising decay rates as consumption gravitates toward streaming.

As per the analyst, the Harry Potter and Dune series will also benefit Maxm.

A re-architecture of the TV ecosystem toward hybrid pricing and continued global licensing should buttress the value of the legacy Discovery Networks non-fiction and lifestyle programming and sports with new original scripted shows as the most challenging element.

Dune: Part Two opened to a strong $81.5 million domestically, the best opening since last October for Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour film at $93 million, although it was likely to exceed the studio's conservative $65 million projection, Harrigan noted.

The global tally was $178 million, although it has yet to open in sci-fi receptive China and Japan.

It is a positive for Warner Bros., although the film admittedly cost $190 million to produce and ~$100 million to market, with economics shared with Legendary Pictures, as per the analyst.

The 2021 Dune: Part One release garnered $402 million globally, although this was depressed by Warner Bros.' pandemic hybrid approach with a simultaneous streaming debut with a 2x+ result plausible for the current release, Harrigan said.

Significantly, the spinoff series Dune: Prophecy will be on Max later in 2024, with the prequel exploring the origins of Dune.

According to Harrigan, Studio positives include the relaunch of the studio animation business under DreamWorks veteran Bill Damaschke, the new partnership with Tom Cruise, the start of filming on James Gunn's Superman movie under new DC leadership, and the rapprochement with J.K. Rowling supporting the new Harry Potter content for Max as early as 2026.

Harrigan projects first-quarter revenue and EBITDA of $10.35 billion and $2.14 billion, respectively.

'Dune: Part Two' brings spice power to the box office with $81.5 million debut

Movie theaters were looking for a savior and Dune: Part Two is delivering on the promise. Armed with sandworms, big screen spectacle and the star power of Timothée Chalamet, Denis Villeneuve 's science fiction epic stormed the North American box office this weekend earning $81.5 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Internationally, it earned $97 million, bringing its global debut to $178.5 million.

"Denis made a really extraordinary and special film and its been really exciting to see people respond," said Mary Parent, a producer on both Dune films and chairman of worldwide production at Legendary. "It was made for the big screen and it feels like it's being received as a cinematic event."

Fresh air weekend: 'dune' director denis villeneuve; the science of memory.

It's the first major hit of 2024, and one that was sorely needed by exhibitors. Although there have been holdovers from December that have continued to earn, like Warner Bros.' Wonka (also starring Chalamet) and Sony's romantic comedy Anyone But You , the box office is in a bit of a drought. In the first two months of 2024, no films have crossed $100 million domestically. The highest earning movies have been The Beekeeper , Bob Marley: One Love and Mean Girls .

Dune 2 rode a wave of great reviews (94% on Rotten Tomatoes) into a marketplace that was essentially free of competition. Warner Bros. released it in 4,071 locations in the U.S. and Canada, where audiences across the board gave it the highest PostTrak marks and an A CinemaScore. According to exit data, men accounted for 59% of opening weekend ticket buyers and 64% were over the age of 25. The sequel was primarily financed by Legendary and its production budget, previously reported to be in the $122 million range, is closer to $190 million.

"It really captured the marketplace," said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution. "It's a cultural moment globally."

Premium large format screens like IMAX and 70mm accounted for 48% of the opening weekend business. It marked a March record for IMAX, which made up $18.5 million of the overall take. Villeneuve filmed the movie using IMAX cameras. Unlike Oppenheimer , it was shot on digital, but with the extra time with the strike delay they were able to make film prints as well and the film format is proving a popular draw for audiences.

"Our most iconic film locations are virtually sold out for weeks," said IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond.

Movie Reviews

'dune: part two' takes the first film's stunning visuals to a new level.

The $81.5 million debut is also a record for its director Villeneuve, and stars Chalamet, Austin Butler and Rebecca Ferguson.

Originally planned for an October 2023 release, Warner Bros. bumped the movie to March amid the Hollywood strikes that would have prevented its starry cast from doing the promotional circuit. The global promo tour has been on hyperdrive for about a month, driving conversations with buzzy interviews, the viral sandworm-inspired popcorn bucket and eye-popping fashion moments from the stylish young cast – peaking with Zendaya's silver cyborg showstopper (vintage Mugler) in London. They've made stops in Mexico City, South Korea, Abu Dhabi and New York City.

"We worked very hard to be ready for that (original) date but we very much felt that, especially with this incredible cast, that it was worth waiting for," Parent said.

Goldstein added that there was "a lot of debate" over whether or not to release it during the strikes but they knew that they needed the cast to "fully realize the movie."

'Dune: Part Two' is a grand spice-opera

Pop Culture Happy Hour

'dune: part two' is a grand spice-opera.

"You don't make movie stars any place other than theaters," Goldstein said. "Cinemas, on the big screen with the big sound and that shared experience makes a big star, or show the talent of a big star anyway."

The first Dune opened under complicated conditions in October 2021. It was one of the last films of Warner Bros.' divisive plan to simultaneously debut its major movies in theaters and on its streaming platform. And yet it still earned over $40 million in its first weekend and went on to gross over $400 million worldwide.

"Denis Villeneuve is up there with Christopher Nolan as a filmmaker whose name alone inspires people to go to the movie theater," said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.

This weekend, he added, "moves the needle in a big way."

Going into the weekend the box office was down about 20% from the same point last year (when "Avatar: The Way of Water," a 2022 release, was lifting everything). The closest equivalent this year is "Wonka," still a hit, but not as big as "Avatar 2." After the "Dune" weekend, the deficit will be closer to 13%.

Could Dune really exist? What scientists think of our favorite sci-fi worlds

Could Dune really exist? What scientists think of our favorite sci-fi worlds

"It shows how important one movie can be to the overall health of the industry," Dergarabedian said. "But this is not a one-hit wonder for March. It's a momentum business. Now we're going to get the wind back in the sails as we head further into March, April and the summer movie season."

Warner Bros. is one of those studios that will be back in short order with another big film, in "Godzilla x Kong" at the end of March, followed by "Furiosa" in May, the "Beetlejuice" sequel in September and the "Joker" sequel in October.

"This is our year," Goldstein said. "Exhibitors are fighting for their lives but we can be clever and collaborative with them to keep our business relevant to audiences."

A visit to Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood and their ‘Classics Made Here’ tour

If you’re looking to take a studio tour while visiting Los Angeles, there are numerous options to choose from. Some of them are fairly basic tours of a movie studio, and on the opposite end of the spectrum is the Universal Studios Hollywood “World-Famous Studio Tour” which is more of a theme park attraction. But the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood is a nice blend of the two. You’ll get a lot of foot-on-the-ground access to the working studio lot, but there are also certain areas designed specifically for the tourist experience. And now, Warner Bros. Studios Tour Hollywood offers a specially guided tour for fans of Hollywood’s golden age, called “Classics Made Here.”

wb classics tour

Full disclosure, one of my first jobs when I moved to Los Angeles was as a tour guide at Warner Bros. But a lot has changed since those days of mine, driving the extended golf cart full of tourists around the studio.

wb classics tour

It begins in a gallery space where you’ll wait to hear your tour group announced for departure. In this room, you’ll see a large recreation of the iconic WB water tower and several soundstages with a map of the studio below your feet. It’s a very cool display, especially if you have some prior knowledge of the studio lot layout. Here you’ll find various galleries highlighting the history of Warner Bros. For those guests interested in the classics, you’ll want to spend extra time in the “Classics to Contemporary” section.

wb classics tour

Once your group is called, you’re escorted into a movie theater where you’ll see a montage of Warner Bros. clips, getting you even more hyped for the tour. Although this is the same montage shown to the other tours offered, it still features some of the classics. It wouldn’t feel right having a WB montage without including “Casablanca.”

warner bros classics tour

After the montage plays, several tour guides come into the theater introducing themselves to the various groups. The tour guides who give the “Classics Made Here” tour are specially trained. They are fans of the classics themselves and are able to share more knowledge of the classics. As we hop onto our golf carts to ride around the lot, this is the portion of the tour that differentiates itself most from the standard tour.

Our well-informed tour guide, Jorja, was sure to ask us at the top of the tour if we had any favorite classics. She asked this in order to make sure she was showing us what we wanted to see. So, if you’re going on a WB tour, don’t be shy when this question is asked. They all want to make sure you’re enjoying the tour, so speak up.

warner bros classics tour

Each of the tour carts are equipped with several monitors that are able to show clips of the locations you’re visiting, seen in films and TV. Earlier, I mentioned how the montage in the movie theater was the same for all tour groups. In this case, the clips shown are specially made for the “Classics Made Here” tour, only featuring the classics and history of the studio lot.

For me, the magic of a studio lot has always been the backlot sets. In the Midwest backlot, movies including “The Music Man,” “East of Eden,” “Rebel Without a Cause,” “Bonnie & Clyde,” and so many more were all shot there. But these old backlot sets don’t still exist simply because of their history. They’re all still used today. In fact, while I was visiting the lot, they were setting up the space for a new shoot.

wb studio backlot

Perhaps the most iconic location on the “Classics Made Here” tour is the last remaining exterior set from “Casablanca.” On the backlot French Street, this façade has been used in countless projects. But it’s never changed too much in order to honor its place in cinematic history. French Street can also be seen in the classic WB film, “Now, Voyager” starring Bette Davis.

wb studio backlot casablanca

After visiting a couple of other backlots, including New York Street where classics like “The Big Sleep” and “The Maltese Falcon” were shot, we headed onto the front lot, which houses the soundstages. We went into soundstage 25, one of the few soundstages commemorated with a name and plaque. Stage 25 is called “The Big Bang Theory” stage, as all twelve seasons of the hit sitcom were shot inside. The stage is currently used for the show “Bob Hearts Abishola,” but that doesn’t mean it’s only used for current projects. On the sides of each soundstage there are plaques highlighting some of the projects that shot inside. Stage 25 was used for classics including “The Adventures of Robin Hood,” “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” “Casablanca,” “Giant,” and more.

wb soundstage

On the front lot sits soundstage 16. This is the largest soundstage on the lot, and one of the largest in North America. The stage was raised from the bottom up for the film “Cain and Mabel,” adding onto its height. Another classic shot in here was the drag race sequence in “Rebel Without a Cause” starring James Dean.

wb soundstage

After our exploration of the backlot and front lot, our tour guide dropped us off at “Stage 48: Script to Screen.” Fun fact, in reality there are less than 48 stages on the Warner Bros. main studio lot. Stage 48 was given this name, as the building that once sat on this land was numbered building 48.

This self-guided portion of the tour links you back up with all other tours. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t classic memorabilia to check out. Inside, you’ll find costumes and memorabilia from “Casablanca,” and “My Fair Lady,” plus the leading ladies and gangsters of yesteryear cinema. It’s also worth noting that guests will be able to visit the real sets of modern classics like hit TV shows “Friends” and “The Big Bang Theory” in Stage 48.

casablanca

After touring Stage 48, learning about the script to screen process, grabbing a bite at a recreated Central Perk, and shopping in a one-of-a-kind “Friends” themed store, it’s back on the golf cart for a short trip.

On the way to the tour finale, we took a pit stop by the “Friends” fountain in order to snap a picture. The original location of this iconic fountain was down the street at the Warner Bros. Studio Ranch, but the public cannot gain access to that smaller lot. It was recently moved to the main lot in order for tour guests to enjoy it. For those interested in the classics tour, it’s fun to note that although this fountain was made famous by “Friends,” it was also used by The Three Stooges.

friends fountain

After that short pit stop, you’ll hop on another golf cart taking you to the “Action and Magic Made Here” self-guided finale. In here you’ll mostly find props, costumes, and photo opportunities featuring DC Comics and Harry Potter. But, for those classics fans, the last thing you’ll see before entering the gift shop are the airplane scene costumes from “Casablanca” and Professor Harold Hill’s suitcase from “The Music Man.” It’s a nice reminder that without the classics that made Warner Bros. the brand that it is today, there would be no modern classics.

the music man

Overall, if you’re looking for a studio tour with a great mix of real-life studio production and elements created especially for tourists, you can’t go wrong with any Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood option. If you’re a fan of classic cinema, the “Classics Made Here” tour is the one you’ll want to book. For those of you who want an even more expanded tour experience, they offer a Studio Tour Plus, as well as a Deluxe Tour. Learn about all of your tour options at www.wbstudiotour.com .

Warner Brother’s Studio Tour: Exploring the Backlot and the Gilmore Girl’s Holiday Event

Studio tours are a popular tourist attraction in Los Angeles, and multiple studios offer them. I have been on the Paramount Studio Tour, the Universal Backlot Tour, and now the Warner Brothers Studio Tour. I have enjoyed each one, and while this one may be the most touristy of the studios to visit, it is still a lot of fun. Here is all the information, and we also went during the special Gilmore Girls Holiday event that they do at the end of each year (note that this is not available outside of the holiday event).

warner brothers studio tour instagram

  • Tickets were $69 for adults (in January of 2020)
  • Check the website for available dates
  • Parking is $15 unless you can find street parking
  • Tours take about an hour and a half, then more time for you to explore the interactive exhibits.
  • They don’t allow video, but they allow photos in most areas.
  • This information was from my visit in 2020
  • Read more about my favorite spots in Los Angeles here

Getting There

warner brothers studio tour instagram

When you book your tickets, you will get an email with information about getting to the lot and what you can bring. The studio is located right off the 134 Freeway in Burbank. We planned to park in the garage but were able to find free street parking close by, so be sure to check and to read signs.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

When we arrived, we got in line to go through security and then got in another line to be divided into tour groups. There were tons of people here and many tours going out regularly. After getting put into our tour group, we loaded up in golf carts (three to a row) and set out to enter the back lot.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

Almost immediately, we stopped and were given a guide to explore the first area. The tour has lots of ons and offs, so you will be walking through sections and also taking the golf cart as well.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

The first place we toured had a lot of costumes and pieces from both Aquaman and Wonder Woman.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

There was also a second floor with a bunch of costumes and props from the Harry Potter movies. We were rushed through this area pretty fast, but it was cool to see all of the props they had on display.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

Next, we loaded into the golf cart for what was the most extended driven section of the tour.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

On this drive, we got to go through New York Street and Hennesy Street, which are two of the central filming locations on the backlot.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

Both of these looked like full cities, and many famous movies were filmed here. We then entered the jungle set, which is one of the only ones at a movie studio in the USA.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

The jungle set had been used for everything from ER and Jurassic Park to True Blood and Million Dollar Baby.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

The tour continued through more office buildings and costume areas on the backlot before getting to the sound stages.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

The first stop for us was at a prop car exhibit that they had set up, which had a dozen different batmobiles from the movies.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

This was my favorite part of the tour, as I am a huge batman fan.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

Waking across the street, we went into the prop area. Our guide told us that this is not always on the tour but since we were there on a holiday and it was not busy we could see it.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

The prop area was gigantic and had everything you could imagine from lamps and decor to a replica oval office. We only saw 10% of the area though, and it was still an overwhelming amount of stuff. It would be fun to spend more time in this area.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

The last stop we had on the tour was visiting a sound stage. We were told that they usually only go in one but since it was a holiday we got to go in three.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

We were only allowed to take photos in the first one though, which was a set for the show Shameless. The other two sets we visited were for Conan’s TV program and the show MOM. It was fascinating to be able to visit these sets and learn more about how the shows were filmed.

Interactive Area

warner brothers studio tour instagram

After the tour ended (it was about an hour and a half), we were dropped off at Lot 48, which is an interactive area where you can go at your own pace.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

This is one of the highlights of the tour as they have many different sets you can see and take photos in. I was also told I could take video here as well.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

The highlights here are the Friends set, and the Big Bang Theory set. The Friends set had a long line, but we waited in it, and they were kind enough to take photos with your phone. At the Big Bang Theory set, we were not allowed to take phone photos, but it was cool to see. They also had a real Oscar Statue that they let you hold for a photo here as well, which was a neat touch, and there are exhibits on costumes and sound design.

Gilmore Girls Holiday Special (only during a few weeks in December)

warner brothers studio tour instagram

After walking through the store, we were able to step onto the Anywhere USA backlot, which had been set up to look like the Gilmore Girls set (much of the show was filmed here).

warner brothers studio tour instagram

I know nothing about this show, but my wife loves it, so I walked around with her and took her photos.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

She loved being able to walk inside of one of her favorite shows and had a blast drinking Luke’s Coffee and visiting Star’s Hollow town square and Lorelai’s house.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

We spent about an hour here and watched the sunset, and the lights turn on on the houses. It was great that it never felt rushed and that they allowed you to take as much time as you wanted.

warner brothers studio tour instagram

After we were done, we boarded another shuttle and headed back to the entrance. I was a little cynical when I started the tour and saw how many people were there, but I have to say, this is an enjoyable thing to do in Los Angeles. If you are looking to tour a movie studio, I highly recommend it, and if you are a Gilmore Girls fan, then be sure to catch the holiday event they have next year. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Fast forward to 2023 and the Warner Brothers Studio Tour is still great – but has been streamlined with even more unique experiences for visitors.

Buying Tickets And Starting The Studio Tour

The ticket buying process is simple – you can purchase them online and see right away which tours are still available. The studio has a paid parking garage which is immediately next to the entrance where you’ll start your tour.

You’ll begin the experience with a video presentation that lasts about ten minutes and gives a nice overview of the studio’s history, location, and what you can expect as the tour begins.

As you exit the theater, one of the tour guides will drive you around the backlot on a small tram that holds about 15 people. It’s not a crowded experience – each tour is quite intimate and you shouldn’t have any trouble at all hearing the trivia tidbits or seeing things they’ll point out along the way.

is the warner brothers tour worth it

The Warner Brothers Studio Tour finally begins!

You’re likely to see some notable locations as you cruise around the lot. For fans of the show Friends , you’ll see where they filmed the introduction of the popular sitcom and splashed around in the “Friends fountain.” You also may spot the Tanner’s San Francisco home from Fuller House or the cafe featured in Shameless . Be on the lookout for the courthouse – it’s used in many films but notably was where Batman & Robin went to visit Commissioner Gordon in the 60s TV series Batman .

Friends set at Warner brothers studio tour

While you’re on the backlot tour you’ll likely stop to see one of the actual production sets for a current television show. Back in 2007 – I remember getting to visit the sets of The West Wing; ER; and Gilmore Girls. Since I don’t watch much television these days, I wasn’t really familiar with the sets we were able to see this time. The good news is – even if you don’t know the show, it’s still really interesting being on a sound stage and seeing how they produce television programs.

You’ll also likely visit some of the empty facades which line the streets of the backlot. It’s interesting to hear which classic films or shows previously used the same buildings – with different paint jobs or decorations. Warner Brothers is known for making good use of everything they already have built! It’s cool how many of these buildings you get to see during the Warner Brothers Studio Tour!

Dress Appropriately For The Tour!

The first part of the tour is almost completely outside (the tram has no doors or windows) and you’ll be subject to whatever the weather happens to be doing. Bring a light jacket in the winter months or prepare to be hot in the summer months.

Explore Warner Brothers Studio Tour Visitors Center

The second part of the tour takes place in a visitors center where you’re able to take as much time as you want to explore. You can even grab a bite to eat! It’s here where you are able to have some really interesting hands-on experiences and learn about the production process that takes place at Warner Brothers.

Warner brother studio tour

You’ll have a chance to try your hand at voiceovers and see how sound effects are produced for films. You’ll learn about the process for creating a musical soundtrack and how to creatively use camera angles. There are quite a few wardrobe pieces on display from notable films and even a section of drawing cartoons – like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck.

See The Set of Friends and Big Bang Theory Set

The most popular attraction for guests at the visitors center is getting to see the Friends set. The iconic sitcom is still popular and people love getting the chance to sit on the Friends couch.

Personally, my favorite part of the Warner Brothers Studio Tour was having the chance to sit in Sheldon’s spot on the set of The Big Bang Theory. For no additional charge, you can have your photo taken while you visit the set Friends or see the Big Bang Theory set. (They also offer a paid version if you’d prefer a higher quality image. I just used my Iphone!)

Now on to the third and final part of the Warner Brothers Studio Tour – a tram whisks you away to another building that’s connected to where you started your tour. This building has memorabilia and artifacts from various Warner Brothers productions like Batman Returns, Superman, and Harry Potter. (I’ve honestly never seen Harry Potter – but if you read the books or watched the movies – this is something you’d probably really enjoy.)

Warner brother studio tour

Again – you’re allowed to take your time browsing and once you’re finished, you’ll exit back into the main lobby where you can go through the Warner Brothers Studio Tour gift shop or head back to your car in the garage.

Is Warner Brothers Studio Tour Worth It?

Overall, the Warner Brothers Studio Tour is a great bargain if you’re looking for the best backlot tour in Los Angeles. If you can find a southern California resident to tag along – the tickets are about $10 cheaper!

You can find tickets and tour times on their website . They also offer a “deluxe” tour experience for a much higher price – but for the average person – the general tour is going to be more than enough.

Movie theaters were looking for a savior and “ Dune: Part Two ” is delivering on the promise. Armed with sandworms, big screen spectacle and the star power of Timothée Chalamet , Denis Villeneuve ’s science fiction epic stormed the North American box office this weekend earning $81.5 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Internationally, it earned $97 million, bringing its global debut to $178.5 million.

“Denis made a really extraordinary and special film and its been really exciting to see people respond," said Mary Parent, a producer on both “Dune” films and chairman of worldwide production at Legendary. “It was made for the big screen and it feels like it’s being received as a cinematic event.”

It’s the first major hit of 2024, and one that was sorely needed by exhibitors. Although there have been holdovers from December that have continued to earn, like Warner Bros.' “ Wonka ” (also starring Chalamet) and Sony's romantic comedy “Anyone But You,” the box office is in a bit of a drought. In the first two months of 2024, no films have crossed $100 million domestically. The highest earning movies have been “The Beekeeper,” “Bob Marley: One Love” and “Mean Girls."

“Dune 2" rode a wave of great reviews (94% on Rotten Tomatoes) into a marketplace that was essentially free of competition.

“It really captured the marketplace,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution. “It’s a cultural moment globally.”

Premium large format screens like IMAX and 70mm accounted for 48% of the opening weekend business. It marked a March record for IMAX, which made up $18.5 million of the overall take. Villeneuve filmed the movie using IMAX cameras. Unlike “ Oppenheimer ,” it was shot on digital, but with the extra time with the strike delay they were able to make film prints as well and the film format is proving a popular draw for audiences.

“Our most iconic film locations are virtually sold out for weeks,” said IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond.

The global promo tour has been on hyperdrive for about a month, driving conversations with buzzy interviews, the viral sandworm-inspired popcorn bucket and eye-popping fashion moments from the stylish young cast – peaking with Zendaya’s silver cyborg showstopper (vintage Mugler) in London. They've made stops in Mexico City, South Korea, Abu Dhabi and New York City.

“We worked very hard to be ready for that (original) date but we very much felt that, especially with this incredible cast, that it was worth waiting for," Parent said.

Goldstein added that there was “a lot of debate” over whether or not to release it during the strikes but they knew that they needed the cast to “fully realize the movie.”

“You don’t make movie stars any place other than theaters,” Goldstein said. “Cinemas, on the big screen with the big sound and that shared experience makes a big star, or show the talent of a big star anyway.”

The first “ Dune ” opened under complicated conditions in October 2021. It was one of the last films of Warner Bros.’ divisive plan to simultaneously debut its major movies in theaters and on its streaming platform. And yet it still earned over $40 million in its first weekend and went on to gross over $400 million worldwide.

“Denis Villeneuve is up there with Christopher Nolan as a filmmaker whose name alone inspires people to go to the movie theater,” said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.

This weekend, he added, “moves the needle in a big way."

Going into the weekend the box office was down about 20% from the same point last year (when “Avatar: The Way of Water,” a 2022 release, was lifting everything). The closest equivalent this year is “Wonka,” still a hit, but not as big as “Avatar 2.” After the “Dune” weekend, the deficit will be closer to 13%.

“It shows how important one movie can be to the overall health of the industry,” Dergarabedian said. “But this is not a one-hit wonder for March. It’s a momentum business. Now we’re going to get the wind back in the sails as we head further into March, April and the summer movie season.”

Warner Bros. is one of those studios that will be back in short order with another big film, in “Godzilla x Kong” at the end of March, followed by “Furiosa” in May, the “Beetlejuice” sequel in September and the “Joker” sequel in October.

“This is our year,” Goldstein said. “Exhibitors are fighting for their lives but we can be clever and collaborative with them to keep our business relevant to audiences.”

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. “Dune: Part Two,” $81.5 million.

2. “Bob Marley: One Love,” $7.4 million.

3. “Ordinary Angels,” $3.9 million.

4. “Madame Web,” $3.2 million.

5. “The Chosen: Season 4, Episodes 7-8,” $3.2 million.

6. “Migration, $2.5 million.

7. “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Hashi,” $2.1 million.

8. “Wonka,” $1.7 million.

9. “Argylle,” $1.4 million.

10. “The Beekeeper,” $1.1 million.

Is the Warner Brothers Studio Tour Worth It?

The answer to this is a big fat…MAYBE.  I’m serious.  I’ll detail why below.

Are you an avid television and movie watcher?

If you are a tv or movie buff, this tour is likely to be interesting for you.  During the tour, the tour guide pointed out, for example, that “The scene from Gilmore Girls where Rory’s car was hit by a dear was filmed in this spot here.”  If you know, you know.  If you don’t, you’ll probably hear facts like that and say, “Meh.”  For my family…we LOVE facts like this as we love watching shows together.

Do you want to see behind the curtain?

Something we didn’t expect to see was how some things are filmed.  For instance, we got to enter a sound stage and see the inside of the “All American” house set.  We learned things like even though the set is inside of a building, there are special lights that make it look like day or night time coming through the windows.  Or how the very real looking pool is in fact…not.

You also get to see a set of buildings that is often seen on various tv shows and movies.  You don’t know until they tell you though, because the signage and decor is changed out depending on the show filming there.  It’s pretty neat.

Do you care if you see the Friends or Gilmore Girls sets? Read this…

Oh my friends…this is a major point of contention for me.  I’m serious.  I sent a scathing email to the company when they sent me a survey asking how I liked the tour.  Ok, so here’s what you need to know.

You purchase your tickets to the tour online and in advance.  If you wait until the day of (in my experience), all online tickets will be sold out.  Also, their refund policy is the following, “All sales are final with an exception of a 24 hour cancelation request prior to your scheduled tour date.”  So…you are pretty locked in once you buy a ticket.  The website states that the Warner Brothers Studio is a working studio and therefore there is filming going on.  There might be some closed sets.  Do they tell you in advance or is there a calendar of planned closures?  Weeeeeeeelll….

It went like this…

Warner Brothers Studio Tour Gilmore Girls Scene

We got on the tram tour, the guide talks about various Gilmore Girls scenes.  As we come up to the outskirts of the Gilmore Girls set my family starts cheering.  The guide keeps driving past it.  It was not until my husband asked if the Gilmore Girls set was part of the tour that they guide apologetically let us know that he found out that morning that the set was closed to tours that day.  He stated that it is usually a part of the tour.

So…that’s my long-winded way of saying, if you care about specific sets, don’t get your hopes up.  It is very possible that you will not see all of the sets they show on their website.  Not only that, there is no advance notice so that you can plan which day you go to ensure you see the set you want to see.

However, don’t worry if you are a big Friends fan.  The tour is so Friends heavy, they even have a Friends cafe.  Big woop to my family as we could care less about Friends.  We did get a fun picture on a recreation of the Friends couch and coffee shop set though, so there’s that.

Is DC Comics and Harry Potter your thing?

DC Comics and Harry Potter is a big part of this tour.  The two combined have their very own building with lots of props and fun things to look at.

Does your family enjoy photo opps?

Warner Brothers Studio Tour Friends set

Common questions about the Warner Brothers Tour

How long is the studio tour.

The guided part of the Warner Brothers Studio Tour is about an hour.  You’ll be on a little tram with your own guide.  The guide will drive you around, make some stops, and give you some details about movie/show magic, or scenes that might have been filmed there.

Can you visit the Gilmore Girls set?

The honest answer is, there is no guarantee that you will see the Gilmore Girls set during your tour.  The studio does not list which sets will be closed in advance.  Therefore, you really just take a gamble as to whether you will see the sets you are hoping to get a look at.

Is there a lot of walking on the Tour?

I personally don’t think the Warner Brothers Studio Tour involved much walking.  If anything, it’s definitely light walking as you look at things, but nothing intense.  Think walking at a museum 😉

Do you see celebrities on the Tour?

We personally did not see any celebrities during the Warner Brothers Studio Tour.  We went on a Sunday.

Warner Bros. Discovery Narrows Q4 Loss Despite 14% Decline in Ad Revenue

Warner Bros. Discovery narrowed its fourth-quarter loss by a significant margin as cost reductions and reduced content production caused by last year’s Hollywood labor stoppages helped it maneuver around a 14% decline in advertising sales and other onerous conditions for traditional media companies.

The owner of the TNT and TBS cable networks, the Warner Bros. studio and the Max streaming service reported a loss of $400 million in its fourth quarter, or 16 cents per share, compared with a loss of $2.1 billion in the year-earlier period, 86 cents per share.

Revenue for the year came to nearly $10.3 billion, a decline from $11 billion in the year-earlier period.

Warner Bros. Discovery is, like many of its rivals, grappling with the exit of many consumers from cable subscriptions, a dynamic that crimps what was once a steady flow of revenue. As more TV viewers migrate to streaming video on demand, traditional media companies have been caught between a rock and a hard place, forced to invest in new broadband venues like Max, while reckoning with the fact that digital revenue may never match what was generated by linear operations.

The company’s studio operations saw revenue fall 18%, largely the result of the Hollywood labor strikes. The effects of the work stoppages on TV production offset increases in revenue from movie releases such as “The Color Purple” and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” and from games such as “Hogwarts Legacy.”

Revenue from TV networks fell 8%, due in part to a 3% decline in distribution revenue and a 14% fall in advertising sales. Warner Bros. Discovery said its exit from some regional sports networks and a soft market for U.S. TV advertising affected performance during the quarter.

Revenue from the company’s direct-to-consumer operations rose 3%, spurred by gains in advertising on Max.

On the earnings call, Zaslav said WBD will launch the Max ad-supported plan in more than 40 markets by end of 2024; currently, that’s available only in the U.S.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav

Warner Bros. Discovery has become the first Hollywood conglomerate to turn a profit for its streaming unit for a full year. In 2023, the company, led by CEO David Zaslav, reported a profit of $103 million, compared with a loss of nearly $2.1 billion for all of 2022 for what it calls its “Direct-to-Consumer,” or DTC, unit.

Picturehouse takes 'from hilde, with love' for u.k., new bbc chair to "confront hard choices" amid "tough" financials, wants to provide a "sanctuary".

The company had improved its streaming unit bottom line throughout two of the first three quarters of 2023. In the first quarter , it had swung to a $50 million profit from a year-ago loss of $654 million. In the second quarter, its streaming loss narrowed to $3 million compared with a bigger year-earlier loss. And in the third quarter, its $111 million streaming profit compared with a $634 million loss a year earlier.

All in all, WBD had entered fourth-quarter earnings season as the only Hollywood giant approaching a profitable year in the unit housing its streaming business. Over the first nine months of this year, it had swung from a loss of $1.85 billion for the January-to-September 2022 period to a $158 million profit for the first three quarters of 2023, saying it would break even or even post a profit for all of 2023.

WBD on Friday also gave an update on its global streaming subscriber base, which had ended the third quarter at 95.1 million, down from 95.8 million in the second quarter. The company ended 2023 with a total of 97.7 million streaming subscribers. “Total DTC subscribers were 97.7 million which included 1.3 million subscribers from our acquisition of BluTV,” WBD said. “Excluding BluTV and TNT Sports Chile, subscribers increased by 0.5 million.”

Full-year DTC unit revenue climbed 5 percent to nearly $10.2 billion. Among the contributing factors were higher ad revenue and the fact that WBD has been licensing more of its content to third parties.

Operating expenses in the segment dropped 3 percent in the fourth quarter, and selling, general and administrative expenses declined 8 percent, “primarily driven by more efficient marketing-related spend,” the company said.

With Netflix profitable and being seen by some observers as the king of streaming , Wall Street has been looking for Hollywood conglomerates to make their streaming business units profitable after an initial focus on subscriber growth. These units are not directly comparable though as they sometimes don’t include all streaming operations of a company or include additional business. WBD’s DTC segment, for example, consists of its streaming and premium pay-TV services, meaning HBO is part of it.

WBD on Friday also posted free cash flow, a key performance metric for management, for its fourth quarter that pushed its full-year 2023 figure above its guidance target.

The company also achieved its year-end goal for debt reduction. Its net leverage ratio, defined as total debt divided by the sum of the most recent four quarters of adjusted EBITDA, came in at 3.9 times as of the end of 2023. WBD had targeted ending the year at four times or below.

On the call, CFO Gunnar Weidenfels indicated that the ad situation as improving in the current quarter: “Domestic ad sales are pacing meaningfully better quarter to date as we are beginning to capture the benefits of our strong upfront deals start last year,” he said.

And its studios segment reported an earnings miss amid difficult year-over-year comparisons, the impact of the dual Hollywood strikes and the fact that the company released more movies in the fourth quarter than in the year-ago period, meaning higher marketing costs. Adjusted EBITDA for the unit fell 30 percent to $543 million as revenue decreased 18 percent to $3.2 billion.

Within the studios unit, content revenue declined 20 percent, “TV revenue declined significantly primarily due to the impact of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and certain large licensing deals in the prior year,” but theatrical revenue “increased due to the larger release slate in the current year quarter ( Wonka , Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom , and The Color Purple ),” WBD noted. “Games revenue increased meaningfully due to the continued performance of Hogwarts Legacy , including the fourth-quarter launch on the Nintendo Switch.”

So-called other revenue rose 12 percent in the fourth quarter, helped by the performance of the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo, “partially offset by the impact of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes on studio production services.”

Fourth-quarter networks unit revenue at WBD dropped 8 percent to $5 billion, with adjusted EBITDA falling 11 percent to $2.2 billion. The AT&T SportsNet business exit “negatively impacted” the year-over-year comparison, the conglomerate said.

Distribution revenue decreased 3 percent, “primarily driven by declines in U.S. pay-TV subscribers, exiting the AT&T SportsNet business, and the transfer of TNT Sports Chile from Networks to direct-to-consumer, partially offset by increases in U.S. contractual affiliate rates and inflationary impacts in Argentina.”

Advertising revenue decreased 14 percent, “primarily driven by audience declines in domestic general entertainment and news networks and soft linear advertising markets mainly in the U.S. and, to a lesser extent, certain international markets, as well as exiting the AT&T SportsNet business.”

“After executing against our strategic plan to reposition the company, we are now on solid footing with a clear pathway to growth,” said Zaslav in the earnings report Friday. “We generated $6.2 billion in free cash flow and paid down $5.4 billion in debt in 2023, which puts us at 3.9 times net leverage.”

WBD shares were down more than 5 percent in premarket trading.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
