City announce Global Trophy Tour 2022

man city trophy tour 2022

Following successful tours in 2018 and 2019, City once again invite fans across the globe to see one of world sport’s most iconic trophies, live and in person.

Since 2018, City have visited over 30 countries with the Premier League trophy, including recent trips to Brazil, India, and Australia.

This year, the tour aims to bring international fans closer to the club than ever before.

Starting in France later this week, the trophy will be joined by City defender Aymeric Laporte , before heading to Houston and Green Bay in the United States as part of Man City ’s Summer Tour 2022.

The trophy will then make its way to Spain, Japan, UAE, Korea and, for the first-time ever, Mexico, Norway and South Africa.

In addition to the international visits and in a first for City and the Premier League trophy, a stop on the 2022 Trophy Tour will take place on Roblox.

The experience will provide an opportunity for young fans and gamers alike to interact in a digital world with the Premier League Trophy, collect unique items and meet other fans.

The trophy will be accompanied by a City legend, who will join fans at a free event for a Q&A and photos with the trophy.

To celebrate the club’s first visits to Norway and South Africa, exclusive screenings of the Manchester derby and Manchester City’s away clash with Liverpool will take place respectively, allowing fans to experience a matchday in their home cities like never before.

Further match screenings during the Trophy Tour will also be announced in due course.

SHOP THE NEW 2022/23 CITY HOME KIT

Throughout the Trophy Tour, Cityzens will also have the chance to enter exclusive giveaways and competitions for special City prizes and meet Official City mascot Moonchester as he joins the global tour.

Nuria Tarre, Chief Marketing Officer at City Football Group, commented: “Celebrating our historic success with our fans around the world is hugely important to Manchester City and it’s fantastic that we are able to bring back an Official Trophy Tour this year for the first time since 2019.

“As our global following continues to grow, we are eager to provide new and exciting opportunities for our fans around the world. This year’s Trophy Tour will bring authentic City experiences to a number of countries - some for the very first time – to allow fans to get closer to their club and celebrate our success with us, both physically and through digital activations.”

Haider Rafique, Global Chief Marketing Officer at OKX, said: “As this iconic trophy embarks on its global tour, we are delighted to be building on our global partnership to bring this iconic symbol of excellence to Manchester City fans from all around the world.

“Just as Manchester City are disruptors in the world of football, OKX are disrupting the world of finance as we bring true financial freedom within reach for everyday people. That the club is stepping into Roblox for part of this tour also speaks to its hunger for innovation and new fan experiences. We look forward to helping Man City harness crypto and Web3 to create more of these cutting-edge new fan experiences going forward.”

Details for each city’s trophy tour will be announced shortly and fans can keep up to date at www.mancity.com/trophytour and via the Club’s social media platforms.

All Trophy Tour visits are subject to COVID and travel restrictions.

Man City To Celebrate Historic Treble With Global Trophy Tour

Manchester City fans will have a chance to see the club's three major trophies up close as the team embarks on a global trophy tour, presented by OKX, later this year.

The tour will showcase the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League trophies that City won in a remarkable 2022-23 season, becoming the first English club to achieve the treble.

The tour will begin in Manchester, where the club will engage with the local community, before heading to several countries across Asia, Europe, Oceania, North America, and South America.

Some of the destinations include Japan, Korea, Greece, China, India, Australia, UAE, Norway, Argentina, America, and Brazil. More locations will be announced in the coming months.

City fans in the UAE will be able to join the celebrations from October 5 to 8, when the tour arrives in Abu Dhabi. They will be joined by City legend Aleksandar Kolarov, who will take part in a football festival and a screening event for City's match against Brighton.

"Man City can win everything" — Pep Guardiola's midfield Messi Rodri on tiredness, trebles, and perfect partner

It's easy to conclude that nothing ever really changes for the relentless machine that is Manchester City.

Just like last season, when they wandered off with a historic Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League treble , they are primed and firmly in contention across those three competitions. It's just what they do.

Last weekend's 1-1 draw at Anfield left them third in the Premier League, a point behind Liverpool and leaders Arsenal in a knife-edge Premier League title race. The Gunners are up next at the Etihad Stadium after the international break.

Real Madrid will be out for revenge in the Champions League quarterfinals after being demolished by City in the semis last season, while Saturday's routine 2-0 win over Newcastle United secured a record sixth-consecutive FA Cup semifinal spot. They will face Chelsea at Wembley .

However, sometimes the things the most important people in the building want to change don't change. If City truly are inevitable, it becomes hard work for the likes of Rodri — arguably the most influential man in their locker room behind Pep Guardiola.

MORE:  How Man City dominated Newcastle United to reach FA Cup semifinals

"I don't remember exactly the number of games I played, but I had a talk with the club and the coach because it's not healthy," Rodri told reporters on City's preseason tour of Japan and South Korea last August, the glorious 2022/23 campaign that saw him score the winner in the Champions League final against Inter Milan having been one of hard toil.

The Spain international played 4,465 minutes across all competitions, 349 more than City's next most-used outfield player, Erling Haaland. That's the equivalent of almost four games.

"You can do it for one season, but when it's two or three in a row, it can be worse for the team because your physicality can drop. So, I have to watch out. We have already spoken that it cannot always be like this.

"The important thing for me is that they know the situation and they know that for the next few seasons we will have to watch out."

Fast forward to the Etihad Stadium mixed zone after his typically accomplished display against Newcastle and the Rodri who chatted to a small group of journalists while clutching a boxed-up post-match meal and a bottle of fruit juice certainly needed to refuel.

He's already on to 3,012 minutes and would be City's most-used player were it not for four matches missed through suspension. If Guardiola's team go the distance once again, he'll probably hit last season's "never again" total.

"I know, I know, I agree with you," he said with a rueful chuckle when his workload was raised. "To be honest, I've tried to take care of my body a little bit more. I spoke with the team in this sense and I think I have rested a little bit more. Let's say it like this."

Rodri has arguably become as important to Pep Guardiola as Lionel Messi

He didn't sound overly convinced. But Rodri is also on a run of 62 games unbeaten across all competitions — a new record in English club football. If that's enough of a reason to keep asking him to go back to the well, consider those four games he's been forced to sit out this season. City lost all of them.

Save for him resting up as an unused substitute during the FA Cup games against Huddersfield Town and Luton Town, opportunities for recuperation have not been worth the wider risk of defeat. Guardiola's teams are famed for their collective brilliance and it is hard to remember a time when removing one part has felt so undermining.

"It's not only just resting. It's a bit how you play also," said Rodri, who is trying to find solutions on the go. "Maybe in the games you are 3-0, 4-0 up, not giving everything and trying to [manage] your body until the end of the season. This is something I've been working on this year."

Rodri's overwhelming importance to City's trophy bids this time around also speaks of a team not quite up to the level of 12 months ago. If everything was working exactly as it should, no player, however excellent, would be as important as he is right now.

Yet the 27-year-old has no doubt we will see the best of this champion team at crunch time. Asked whether City have another level to find this year, he saw no reason to be diplomatic or manage expectations.

"Yes, of course. I always say the same: you will see the best version of this team at the end of the season," he said.

"Always it happens because of the manager, because of the standards of the club, because of ourselves and the ways we have learned over these years. This is what we want to do.

"We asked the lads to rest as much as possible. I know it's tough but we have friendly games [for our national teams]. It's important to play for our national teams but also to think about the end of the season. I think the best is yet to come."

Does Pep Guardiola ever change his tactics?

In some respects, the impression of nothing ever really changing for City is Guardiola's grand illusion — one he creates with countless tiny tweaks to keep the ship on course. It's a trait of the managerial greats; something that, for example, makes talk of a "United Way" for those who pine for the Sir Alex Ferguson glory days at Manchester United a complete misnomer. He too was always changing and subtly shifting to keep on winning.

Consider the version of City that Guardiola settled upon 12 months ago, with John Stones roving into midfield from centre-back to create the numerical superiority of the false-nine City with the added bonus of Haaland plundering buckets of goals at centre-forward.

It looked as if Guardiola's final innovation when it came to the full-back position was to kill it off completely. But a key element of the Newcastle win was both Kyle Walker and Josko Gvardiol playing high and wide, allowing Jeremy Doku and Phil Foden to enjoy themselves as inside forwards alongside Haaland.

Plenty of Guardiola's solutions this season have been pragmatic rather than aesthetically pleasing. Take Julian Alvarez playing in midfield, often being careless in possession but weighing in with vital goals and assists. Walker and Gvardiol are hardly the fabled full-backs of Guardiola's Barcelona when it comes to playing as auxiliary wingers, but their occupying space out wide allowed Foden to thrive as City's creative fulcrum during Kevin De Bruyne's five-month injury absence.

It means more clubs in the tactical bag of keen golfer Guardiola, but there was also something more familiar against Newcastle as Mateo Kovacic played alongside Rodri in midfield and the pair clicked through 293 passes — the same amount all 16 Newcastle players used managed between them.

Croatia international Kovacic was a low-key signing from Chelsea last summer and a loose-cannon showing against Arsenal last October — one of those Rodri suspension games — set him back in terms of having Guardiola's trust for the big occasions. An exemplary substitute appearance against Liverpool where he played a huge role in quelling the Anfield storm should have put those fears to bed. Rodri certainly hopes so.

"If I give you my honest opinion, I think he's great for me," he said. "He's the kind of player you can pass to him, he passes again and we control all the game. He's an experienced player, he's won a lot.

"You saw it in the last years at Chelsea and Real Madrid, wherever he is. He will be definitely so, so important for us until the end. I have no doubts about this."

"Champions again, ole ole" has been the Manchester City fans' terrace soundtrack in 2023/24. And here they are again at the business end of the season. Different, but the same all at once.

"I think, if you ask ourselves before the season which position we would be able to be in, it would be exactly this one," Rodri said. "Involved in every competition, wanting to fight for everything and this is the situation that we're going to get after the international break."

A double treble? Really?

"We can win everything, of course," he added. "It will be so, so tough. We asked ourselves at the beginning of the season to put us in a situation where we could at least fight to the end and this is the situation.

"The job is done up until now and now we have to do the last push."

Carlos Alcaraz defeats Daniil Medvedev again in Indian Wells title rematch

Carlos Alcaraz arrived at Indian Wells full of doubt about his twisted right ankle. He’s leaving as a two-time champion.

He defeated Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (5), 6-1 for the second straight year in the BNP Paribas Open final on Sunday, earning his first title since winning Wimbledon last year.

Iga Swiatek beat Maria Sakkari 6-4, 6-0 in just over an hour to win the women’s title, with Swiatek losing just 21 games in six matches during the 12-day tournament — an average of 3.5 games per match.

Alcaraz sprained his ankle at the Rio Open in late February. His first practice at Indian Wells lasted 30 minutes without any movement. His first practice with his fellow pros “was really tough for me,” he said in a Tennis Channel interview.

INDIAN WELLS, CALIF. -- THURSDAY, MARCH 8, 2018: The sun sets behind the mountains.

Commentary: Even after 25 years, Indian Wells continues to live up to its tennis paradise hype

Indian Wells has hosted one of the world’s most prestigious tennis tournaments over the last 25 years thanks to its steadfast founders and devoted fans.

March 3, 2024

Alcaraz outlasted Jannik Sinner in a three-set semifinal after needing three sets to get out of his second-round match.

“After every match I was feeling better,” Alcaraz said. “I was getting more confident after every match. Winning a Master 1000 again, a really important tournament to win, gives you motivation to keep going.”

Alcaraz became the first man to defend his Indian Wells title since Novak Djokovic won three in a row from 2014 to 2016. He beat Medvedev 6-3, 6-2 last year in the Southern California desert.

“It’s definitely your court, you like it here,” Medvedev told Alcaraz during the victory ceremony. “Hopefully you can one day let me play a little bit better here.”

Carlos Alcaraz hits a return during his victory over Daniil Medvedev in the singles final at the BNP Paribas Open.

Medvedev led 3-0 in the first set while Alcaraz had eight unforced errors over those games. The Spaniard won three games in a row to tie it, 3-3.

The players held serve the rest of the set, with Alcaraz serving a love game to get into the tiebreaker. He led 3-0 and 5-2 before Medvedev tied it 5-5. Alcaraz won the next two points to close it out.

Alcaraz got the only two breaks in the second set, when Medvedev had one winner and nine errors.

For the match, Alcaraz hit 25 winners and had 26 unforced errors, while Medvedev had 11 winners and 23 unforced errors.

Swiatek improved to 20-2 this year, with her wins leading the WTA Tour.

It was a repeat of the 2022 final, in which Swiatek beat Sakkari 6-4, 6-1. Sakkari hasn’t defeated the Polish star since 2021.

Swiatek raced to a 3-0 lead in the opening set. Sakkari recovered to win three straight games, including a break of Swiatek. She served a love game to tie it, 4-4. Swiatek lost just two points on her serve the rest of the set, wrapping it up with a forehand winner in the corner.

Swiatek was more dominant in the second set, breaking Sakkari three times all in love games. She lost just five points in the set.

Swiatek hit 15 winners and had 11 unforced errors in the 1-hour, 8-minute match. Sakkari had eight winners and 18 unforced errors.

Alcaraz and Swiatek earned $1.1 million each for their wins. That’s less than the $1.26 million the women’s and men’s champions received in 2023. This year more prize money was allocated to the earlier rounds, reducing the champions’ share by nearly 13%.

Golf

The PGA Tour had its chance. Now it’s Scottie Scheffler’s time to dominate

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLORIDA - MARCH 17: Scottie Scheffler of the United States walks to the 18th tee during the final round of THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass on March 17, 2024 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. (Photo by Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images)

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — There she was again up on that hill, the same one as a year ago, this time carrying the next generation of the Scheffler family. Meredith Scheffler stood overlooking TPC Sawgrass’ 18th green Sunday with a large sun hat shielding her face and the protruding belly carrying their first child due next month. See, Scottie Scheffler cries just thinking about Meredith. He cried with her the morning two years ago before he won the Masters. When he won this same tournament a year ago, he raised his arms in celebration, seemingly having a moment with the Florida crowd. But no.

“I was really just looking at Mere on the hill,” Scheffler said last week, reminiscing from the back of his throat, choking up, tears in eyes as he trailed off.

But this time he had to wait. A Sunday 64 gave him the comeback lead at The Players Championship, but for another 40 minutes, he’d have to wait off on the driving range for the pack of Wyndham Clark, Xander Schauffele and Brian Harman to try and catch him with a birdie on 18. Harman’s putt missed. Schauffele’s didn’t have a chance. And once Clark’s birdie putt spun around the cup and out to give Scheffler a record second consecutive Players title, he didn’t even see it. Scheffler just heard the groans hundreds of yards away and high-fived his caddie, Ted Scott. Then Scheffler eventually made his way up to the Sawgrass clubhouse. And running down those stairs to meet him midway was Meredith, her arms thrown around him, squeezing each other tightly for a full minute. By the time they released, Scheffler’s face was bright red.

“Yeah, I always get emotional when I talk about Meredith for some reason,” he said two weeks ago. “I think Mere has such a good understanding of how much work it takes to get to this point. To win a tournament like this. All the work we put in day in, day out in order to be able to do this.”

But when Scheffler won this tournament a year ago, he was still in ascension. He was on his way back to No. 1, a clean-shaven 26-year-old learning how to become a star.

A bearded Scheffler returned to reclaim it Sunday as a man. As a soon-to-be father. As the undeniable, undisputed best golfer in the world. And it’s everything that’s happened in between that makes what comes next so clear.

Because he gave his competition a chance. Those first three years, when he learned to be a pro. He gave them a year when every 5-foot putt was a question mark. And this week in Ponte Vedra, he gave them two days in which he was simply “slapping it around” as a neck injury threatened his tournament . No matter how many head starts and free passes Scheffler gave the rest of golf, none of them were enough. The field wasted their opportunities. They missed their window. Now Scheffler is fully formed, battle-tested and about to dominate the sport indefinitely.

man city trophy tour 2022

The putting was their chance. Scheffler’s been on a two-year run of ball striking not seen since prime Tiger Woods, but his putting cratered. It messed with him. He fell outside the top 100 on putts within 10 feet, and the questions every week centered around the topic only frustrated him more. Yet even with a dud putter, no golfer could catch him as world No. 1. And then Scheffler found it. All of a sudden, once he could putt at a positive level one week ago at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Scheffler left the rest of the field gasping for air as he ran away for a five-shot lead.

So Friday, when Scheffler hit a second-round shot on No. 11 and felt it aggravate his neck, he was out of it, right? He couldn’t get his club back. He needed to be massaged before the next three holes. He and caddie Scott guessed on club choices because they didn’t know what would happen on any given swing. When he still shot a third-round 68 to put himself five back of the leader, Schauffele, he described his round as “just using my hands as much as I can … get it up there somewhere near the green and hopefully get up-and-down or make some putts.”

During the second round, Scheffler told Scott it was so painful that it was hard to chip. Scott told his wife, “I don’t know if he can finish this tournament.” Saturday, he was more frustrated he couldn’t hit the shots he wanted. The conversations before each swing turned into Scott saying, “A normal you would be an 8-iron. How normal do you feel?” At times Scheffler could hardly move.

“It just shows you what tenacity, resilience, whatever fancy word you wanna use to describe Scottie Scheffler,” Scott said. “Toughness. But also, he’s got great hands.”

So by the time Scheffler felt close to normal Sunday, it was like the best golfer in the world gave the field a five-shot head start.

He hit his 92-yard wedge on No. 4 that took two bounces, spun left and fell into the hole for eagle. He made a 17-foot putt on No. 5 to get within two shots of Schauffele. His 238-yard tee shot into the par-3 8th bounced perfectly off the front rough to 16 feet, and he made that, too. Once he easily birdied 9 to shoot the front nine at 5-under par — two shots better than anyone else in the top 15 — the leaders began to notice another familiar name next to theirs.

“Yeah, of course,” Clark said.

“It’s just another week,” Schauffele joked.

Scheffler is reaching that tier, that zone, that aura when his name rises up the leaderboard and everyone realizes they’re screwed. Because the rest of Scheffler’s round was less about his brilliance (though he was), but about the ways none of Schauffele, Clark or Harman could keep it together and execute with him on their tails. Clark bogeyed No. 10 and parred the 326-yard, par-4 12th that the field averaged 3.740 on. Schauffele lost control of his driver to bogey both 14 and 15, and left an eagle putt on 16 short. And Clark excruciatingly missed that birdie putt on 18.

But Scottie, he went and grabbed it. He stepped to the 12th tee, that short par 4 that threatens with water left, and went for it. He launched a comically high-arcing drive into the air that hung there for seemingly minutes. It hit the green along the front right slope, and still the crowd refused to cheer until it could confirm its safety. But then that tee shot settled in the center of the green. And the fans erupted, giving him a full ovation as he walked to the green. By then the gallery knew. Scheffler was about to win the golf tournament.

He “only” birdied one more hole to shoot his 8-under-par round of 64 — tied for the lowest winning final round in Players history — but his work was done. He did what Scheffler does. He hit targets. Set up easy two-putts. Got out of there with a lead that nobody could catch.

He was asked if he could have envisioned holding that trophy Friday as physiotherapist Marnus Marais massaged his neck on the 14th tee.

“Yeah, I think so,” Scheffler said. “That’s probably why I kept playing.”

That kind of thinking is rare. Not just the presence of mind to say it, but the wherewithal to do it. That’s the way Tiger Woods thinks, and for better or worse that is now the kind of company Scheffler will keep. He has only one major. He knows that. But since he won that 2022 Masters, his last six majors have gone T2, T21, T10, 2, 3 and T23. More are coming.

What’s frightening for the rest of golf is that he could go through the putting woes, he could go through all the frustrating close finishes when he couldn’t quite win and come out of the gantlet stronger. His ball striking keeps getting inexplicably better. He can run away with a signature event at Bay Hill and then win The Players with a bad neck. The greatness of Scheffler isn’t how good he is. It’s that he can bound over the hurdles and not lose his stride.

But what’s always made Scheffler so different without a golf club in his hand is how unaffected he is by fame and this greatness conversation. He often jokes about losing his green Masters jacket. He talks constantly about how he values his home life and family far more than a silly game like golf. He cares a great deal about golf, but it does not define him. And not allowing golf to define him means not allowing his best and worst moments to take him off track.

“I really do have a great support system,” Scheffler said Sunday. “I’m very thankful for it. I have a great wife, and if I started taking my trophies and putting them all over the house and walking in all big-time, I think she would smack me on the side of the head and tell me to get over myself pretty quickly. Winning golf tournaments doesn’t give me any brownie points at home, so I just try and do my best.”

And as Scheffler’s celebratory news conference wrapped up, one final question arrived. It was about Tiger, who famously spent 281 straight weeks at world No. 1.

Scheffler heartily laughed because just three weeks ago at the Genesis Invitational, a fan shouted: “Congrats on being No. 1, Scottie. Eleven more years to go.”

“Eleven more years to go,” Scheffler repeated quietly. In that moment, he felt playfully humbled. And he heard a new goal.
