Masai Mara fly-in safari essentials and information

Must do on a masai mara fly in safari.

Masai Mara is of course the showpiece of this flying route. The Mara is among the greatest places in Africa for an outstanding safari experience. From its stunning scenery to its dense wildlife, which includes views of the Big Four (Lions, Elephants, Buffalos, and Leopards) from the Big Five.

Large numbers of lions, cheetahs, elephants, rhinos, African buffalo, wildebeest, Giraffe, Zebra and many more animals are found in the park in their natural habitat, unconfined and free to roam the vast wilderness stretching for miles on end.

Visitors may enjoy trips to native Maasai villages and witness a way of living that has stayed unaltered for centuries, in addition to spectacular vistas in the sky and unique perspectives on animals.

Visitors can also include a custom itinerary including other national parks such as the beautiful Tsavo East with some of the largest herds of elephants in Africa residing there as well as Amboseli National Park and the best beaches Masai Mara has to offer.

Animals viewed on a Masai Mara fly-in safari?

The terrain of Masai Mara is just as appealing as the species, and it’s much more stunning from above, but don’t forget your binoculars, as there’s an astounding diversity of wildlife concealed in these arid plains.

A plethora of wildlife congregates around the waterholes, and game drives give several views of lions, wildebeest, giraffe, and zebra from among numerous plains animals. Meanwhile, the game reserves are home to large numbers of elephants, leopards and rhinos.

Also keep a look outside for springbok and oryx, as well as rarer wildlife like the aardwolf. Buffalo, eland, gazelles, impala, and waterbuck were also discovered. Visitors will undoubtedly enjoy viewing these majestic animals in their natural surroundings.

Factors to consider when booking a fly-in safari?

The first things to think about are your finances and the length of time you have allocated for your vacation. Fly-in safaris are ideal for time-pressed vacationers.

It’s also worth considering whether you would like to see more of a region than simply the specific places into which you’ll be traveling. Traveling from region to region provides a more in-depth understanding of a nation, its people, and history than soaring over it.

This is especially true in Masai Mara, with its magnificent landscape, superb roads, and active local culture as you fly by. If you are prone to travel sickness or are a fearful flier, a fly-in safari may not be the best option for you.

Aircraft used on a Masai Mara fly-in safari?

The Cessna 210, a highly engineered small airplane with a single engine, is the most preferred for charter flights. It has a great reputation and is a six-seater that can accommodate up to four individuals. Perfect for beautiful flights.

The Baron is a slightly bigger and faster aircraft that is similarly flown by a single pilot but it has two engines. It can accommodate up to five persons.

A Cessna 404 can carry up to eight people. It is the Cessna 210’s elder sibling, with twin engines and two pilots. Ideal for bigger parties that want to fly in the same plane. More room and comfort.

The Cessna Caravan is a superb aircraft that accommodates up to 12 people and one pilot. The ‘4×4’ of small planes, capable of operating from rough airstrips, has a high-winged single turbine aircraft that is great for picturesque aerial photography.

Luggage restrictions on a fly-in safari?

On bush flights, luggage capacity might be quite restricted. The Cessna 206, for example, has just a tiny space under the seats, and bags are frequently squeezed in to fit within. As a general rule, soft duffle bags are preferable over hard-framed suitcases with wheels.

Some providers set quite strict weight limitations and will count your hand bags and even coats in the total. Most employers allow roughly 15kg per person as a general rule. Don’t be startled if an airline inquires about your own weight.

This is frequently done in order to securely balance the smaller aircraft. If you have too much luggage, you may be able to pay for a cargo ticket on safari routes.

What is the average cost for a Masai Mara fly-in safari?

The average cost for a Masai Maran fly-in safari is $2,500 – $4,000 per person for fly-in excursions whilst accommodation and activity add-ons can add to this price.

What are the advantages of a Masai Mara fly-in safari?

The advantage of a Masai Mara fly-in safari includes saving a lot of time by avoiding long, bumpy road journeys. You’ll also see another side of this incredible landscape and wildlife which you wouldn’t otherwise see from the ground and enjoy the thrills of descending over the vast savannah.

Are Masai Mara fly-in safaris safe?

Masai Mara fly-in safaris are indeed very safe with private charter aircraft well maintained and piloted by professionals with years of flying experience and safety training. Each aircraft typically carries up to 12 individuals whilst larger planes seat 35 – 50 passengers.

Around 10 am you will be met at your hotel in Nairobi and brought to Wilson Airport for your flight to the Mara North Conservancy. On a cloudless day, during your short 45-minute flight, you can watch as the landscape changes below you. The Mara North is a private conservancy, forming a part of the Greater Mara Ecosystem. The area boasts phenomenal wildlife and due to the fact that the conservancy strictly controls the vehicle density in the region, you are set to have an exclusive safari experience during your stay. On your way to the Elephant Pepper Camp, you will already receive your first taste of the game viewing the region has to offer. Located in the valley of the Mara North Conservancy, with vast views of the plains ahead, the Elephant Pepper Camp will be your home for the following three nights. Lunch will be served at the camp and in the afternoon, you will embark on your first proper game drive. At sunset, you return to your camp and enjoy a delicious three course meal. Welcome to the bush – your adventure has begun! Lunch | Dinner

Day 2 | Mara North Conservancy

Awake in the early morning hours and head out for a game drive with the rising sun. Many animals are most active at dawn and you will want to make the most of your awesome location. The area is famed for its many predators – lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas are spotted more commonly than in many other regions. They prey on the zebra, buffalo, wildebeest, impala, and eland found nearby. Breakfast will be a picnic in the great outdoors, before heading back to your camp at noon. Here you will have a chance to sit back, relax and enjoy the serenity of your surroundings. In the afternoon, another game drive gets underway and perhaps you spot some of the animals you missed earlier on. Then, as the sun begins to set over the savannah, you enjoy a sundowner drink and slowly return to your camp for another fantastic dinner. Your second night on your Masai Mara fly-in safari. Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

Day 3 | Masai Mara Game Reserve

On safari, no day is like the other – you never can tell what awaits you. To make the most of the day, a hearty breakfast is served at camp before you depart on a full day’s game drive in the Masai Mara Game Reserve. You will cover wide, open grasslands, dotted with acacia trees along the way. Your safari guide is skilled and experienced and will help you spot animals which might otherwise have gone unnoticed. There is no rush today, so observe the behaviour of the various animals you encounter and learn more about the natural world. A picnic lunch will be provided, and in the afternoon, you return to your camp. Here you enjoy the evening by sitting by the campfire, with a starry night sky above you and the sounds of the African bush around you. Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

Day 4 | Mara North Conservancy – Nairobi

For those whose thirst for adventure is not yet quenched, a morning bush walk, escorted by a local guide is offered. A wonderful way to stretch your legs and immerse yourself in nature. What vaccinations are needed and is Kenya a malaria region?

  • In general, East Africa poses no higher health risks than many other destinations. Please consult your GP or a tropical disease institute regarding appropriate vaccinations etc. before your departure. For your own safety please inform us about any intolerances or allergies you may have against any medications or of any medical conditions (e.g. high blood pressure, epilepsy, asthma, heart conditions, etc.) when you book your trip. Please also inform your guide before the start of the tour.
  • In theory, there is a possibility of contracting malaria in all East African countries. Malaria is caused by one-cell parasites and transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes. Different medications can offer a prophylaxis but some need to be taken before you start travelling. You should consult your GP or the institute for tropical diseases to get medical advice. Our experience suggests that medications which have been on the market for some time (e.g. Lariam) can lead to severe side effects and therefore may compromise your trip.
  • Prevention is always better than cure; the best prevention is not to get bitten by wearing long trousers, socks, closed shoes and long-sleeved tops during the evening hours. The use of anti-mosquito sprays and creams can further help to reduce the risk of being bitten.

The great wildebeest migration Kenya

The Masai Mara Game Reserve is arguably Kenya’s most popular game sanctuary. It is the most famous and most visited game reserve in Kenya. The film ‘Out of Africa’ was made to a great extent in this reserve. Virtually every type of wildlife can be seen at the Mara.

A spectacle worth seeing is the annual migration of millions of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle from Serengeti plains across the Tanzania border and the Mara River to reach Maasai Mara grazing fields from late June.

The dramatic crossing of the river and the preying on the migrants by predators can be viewed from early July to October. The reserve abounds with birdlife since the dose to about 452 species has been recorded. Hot air balloon safaris are readily available in this park.

Breakfast at Leisure then view game as you drive to the airstrip to board your Nairobi bound flight departing at 1115hrs to arrive Nairobi at 1300hrs .On arrival, our driver will meet you and drive you to your hotel where your Amboseli-Masai Mara Air safari ends.

  • 532dylanj 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Honeymoon Safari and beach trip I found Ongeri through a YouTube video and have had the most pleasant and wonderful time interacting with them. From getting a quote to having an amazing trip in Kenya, they have been very helpful. I was dealing specifically with Cazeah from the organization. She was responsive and made suggestions that suited our liking. This was a special honeymoon trip and Ongeri helped us enjoy it by making sure all the logistics were taken care of. The driver we spent most of our time with and was our Safari guide was Patrick. He was on time everyday, dedicated and very knowledgeable. We felt very safe with Patrick, he was good natured, and very dependable. We are very pleased with our experience and highly suggest others book their safaris with Ongeri. • DianaCK 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Simply out of this world! Ongeri Expeditions organised for our family of 4 from London a bespoke safari trip to the Masai Mara. From the very beginning they were extremely attentive, flexible and able to accommodate everything we wanted. The trip itself was simply out of this world. The organisation was exceptional to the finest details and we were able to experience the beauty and splendour of the game reserve whilst staying in the incredible Sanctuary Olonana lodge. I cannot recommend Ongeri Safaris highly and enough and will recommend to everyone. Read more Written June 2, 2023

I highly recommend Ongeri Expeditions to anyone looking to book a safari or vacation in Kenya. Abner was there for me right from the start all the way until we got back home. Some of the flights I had booked myself did not go smoothly, but Abner took care of booking road transfers to get us to our first camp near Amboseli without delay. We packed a lot into 7 days, Amboseli, Masai Mara and Diani beach. We just loved every minute of it! Read more Written February 3, 2023

I got a chance to Learn and see different types of giraffes and birds cause i only knew limited types. I had an amazing trip, not forgetting the friendship bonds , an excellent driver who acted as our tour guide and also my splendid view was of a memory of elephants together with a baby elephant feeding with her mother. I was so shocked to see a hippopotamus playing in the mud because it did not cross my mind that hippopotamus are found in Amboseli. Read more Written April 13, 2022

  • 62marcz 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Reliable operator who can give you the perfect daytrip or safari into the wild where others don't go I've done a very well organized day trip around Nairobi with Ongeri Expeditions as my time was limited this time. I've seen some of the highlights like the Nairobi National Park, Elephant Orphanage and Giraffe Center. Ongeri Expeditions is a reliable company with nice staff, good drivers and cars. Will definitely recommend Ongeri Expeditions for day trips but I look forward to do longer trips, as safari's, on my next visits with them as well. Nice staff with eye for detail. Abner is a lovely guide who gave me a lot info about the animals as the birds which we saw and enjoyed his enthusiasm for nature. Read more Written January 2, 2022
  • N9743MCjoshg 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Maasai Mara Safari! We booked Ongeri Expeditions to try and catch the wildbeast migration to Maasai Mara, but many animals did not migrate this year from Tanzania. We also wanted to see as much of the other wildlife (elephants, big cats, hyenas, etc…) we could during the game drives. Ongeri Expeditions was good at communicating the trip details and plan. Accommodations at Osero Camp were excellent. All the people booked to support our safari were very friendly and attentive. Ongeri Expeditions booked the entire safari, including: transport to and from Nairobi to visit Maasai Mara, the stay at Osero Camp, and game drives. The price for a three day package was very reasonable and good value for the price paid! We didn’t have any opportunity to see the wildbeast crossing, but Ongeri Expeditions’ guide spotted many elephants, giraffes, lions, cheetahs, leopard, hyenas, ostriches, many varieties of antelope, hippos, and crocodiles! Ongeri Expeditions is a local Kenyan tour company which is loved by the Kenyan people. The communication before and during the Safari trip was very timely and professional. The itinerary was discussed and tailored to our needs which is what every traveler loves. The trip was worth every coin and although I didn't get to see the Wilderbeest do an actual river crossing I was able to see so many lions, Elephants, cheetahs in the wild. A full service oriented experience! Even though we had lost an hour of our game drive time, the team made sure we had the best experience in Nairobi National Park and we got very lucky to see many animals and to get a whole lot of background information on the surroundings, wildlife and Kenya as a whole. 3 NIGHT Flying Safari

  • 2 ACTIVITIES

Enjoy 3 nights in one of our three Masai Mara locations Governors’ Camp , Little Governors’ Camp or Governors’ Il Moran Camp.

Nairobi to Masai Mara

When you arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport you will be met and driven to Wilson Airport for your Governors’ Aviation flight to Masai Mara. The flight takes around 45 minutes and you fly over the scenically beautiful Great Rift Valley. On arrival in the Masai Mara, it’s a short game drive en route to the camp, before an al fresco lunch overlooking the Mara River (or marsh in the case of Little Governors’). Embark on a thrilling afternoon game drive at around 3:30pm and return in the dusk for drinks and chatter around the campfire, before your dinner. Fall asleep to the night-time chorus of the Masai Mara!

Masai Mara Game Reserve

Arise early each morning to make the most of your spectacular location. Each day will offer you the option of three game drives within the Mara National Reserve, immersing yourself in this rich wildlife destination.

For a particularly memorable and unforgettable experience, enjoy a surreal journey in a hot air balloon, with  Governors’ Balloon Safaris (please note that this is an extra cost), over the Masai Mara plains.

This adventure begins just before dawn; depart the camp at 5.15am to the Governors’ Balloon Safaris take off site, located just behind Little Governors’ Camp. The fabulous sunrise flight lasts approximately one hour depending on weather conditions. On landing, sit down to a delicious bush breakfast, freshly cooked on balloon burners in the middle of the Mara plains. Toast your return to Mother Earth together with your pilot over a glass of sparkling wine. Game drive back to your camp.

Masai Mara to Nairobi

On your final day, head out on an early morning game-drive at sunrise, followed by breakfast at the camp. If you are departing the Mara on a late afternoon flight, there will be an opportunity for one more game drive (late morning) and a delicious lunch back at the camp. After lunch you will be transferred to the airstrip to catch the PM flight with Governors’ Aviation. On arrival in Nairobi, you will be met and transferred to a restaurant for dinner (dinner to be paid direct). After dinner, transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your international flight home.
