Voyager Restaurant

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

We grabbed sandwiches from here on our way out to the ferry to go home from our trip. It was cold and windy, so we ate them in the car. I can think of better ways to enjoy food this delicious, but being so delicious... offset having to eat in the car. The shrimp po' boy I had wasn't truly a po' boy (it was more of a fried shrimp sandwich), but it was great. It really has nothing to do with a review, but there were seven of us (customers and workers) in the store at one point while we were waiting for our food. Not one straight white male among us, which may be the first time that has ever happened in a room on Orcas . . . it was nice to see some diversity on the island. Voyager is definitely going on my list of must-visit places when in Eastsound. Everything on the menu looks great, and I want to try it all. More

Highly recommend for their sandwiches and salads. We wandered around town trying to find someplace that could accommodate vegan and gluten free and found their great vermicelli salad. The bahn mi was excellent with very tasty bread and generous with the toppings. Fresh and delicious!... The staff was very friendly and helpful and had a nice drinks selection including a funky basque cider. More

voyager restaurant orcas island

This tiny and lovely new restaurant is off to a great start. it specializes in lunch-seafood and sandwiches, with an intriguing menu with some Vietnamese specialities. the food was fresh and delicious. there may be 6-8 tables and small bar area with stools.

Fantastic addition to Eastsound. Sandwiches and salads, as well as beer and wine with a small outdoor patio (as well as indoor seating). Chicken sandwich is incredible. Friendly staff. Highly recommend!

This place doesn’t exist anymore. Something called West End Kitchen is about where this supposedly was. Very sparse menu and strange assortment of esoteric wines with no posted prices.

there food is great five star rating i highly recommend the salads i am a vegan so it was good that they had some greens in there food

Voyager is a charming little sandwich and seafood shop in the heart of Eastsound owned and operated by a longtime local couple. It has a great, local, welcoming vibe and atmosphere. There are 5 small tables that can be joined for larger groups, two counters... with stools, and more seating on the patio out front when the weather is agreeable. Everything I’ve had on the menu so far has been especially well balanced and delicious with unique and very thoughtfully cultivated flavors. The green salads are made of local, island-grown fresh (very fresh) greens and house made dressings that pay homage to the greens without overpowering them. I loved the Kale Caesar and enjoyed the seasonal Mixed Green salad even more. The fresh, island-local baguettes and rolls are finished in an oven as the other ingredients are prepared. The Grilled Skirt Steak sandwich was the first sandwich I ordered over a weekend and it was delicious. Lots of flavor and texture, none of it overpowering the other. Just so we’ll balanced. I enjoyed pairing their Basque Cider with it (they have a great by the glass wine list, local beers, and sodas as well). The Fried Shrimp Po Boy, prepared with a Crystal remoulade, just the right amount of bacon, and lettuce and tomato, was excellent as well. The Pork Bahn Mi was the nearest to a religious experience I’ve ever had with a sandwich. Jon, the chef owner, really knows how to prepare pork. And the cilantro aioli, house pickled veggies, chilies (*hot, adjust as needed!), and fresh herbs on the warm baguette come together in an exceptionally delicious way. Everything seems to be a win on the Voyager menu. More

The San Juan Islands consist of more than 100 islands and islets nested at the northwest corner of Washington State. This is a rugged and rural part of the country where you can find more than a few impressive restaurants tucked into the small towns. Often ingredients are sourced from farms on the islands themselves and in the nearby Skagit Valley; seafood like oysters and halibut come straight out of the surrounding Salish Sea. Especially in the summer, this is one of the best places in the Northwest to get away from it all. As usual, this list is not ranked but organized geographically from north to south.

Matia Kitchen

After some business-related drama that led Matia to shut down and reopen in a new Eastsound location, it’s back to being one of the region’s big destination restaurants. The menu changes daily, but expect delights like tomato custard tart topped with cured salmon roe or sourdough pancakes with smoked egg yolk jam and roasted beets.

Brown Bear Baking

Helmed by two alums of the artisanal San Francisco Baking Institute, Eastsound’s Brown Bear Baking is a cozy spot for croissants, boules, and brunchy classics like quiche and croque monsieur. Fusing classic French techniques with the archipelago’s agricultural bounty, Brown Bear’s small-batch baked goods feature Skagit Valley heirloom wheat and seasonal fruits like apples and peaches from island farms. The well-stocked bakery case typically dwindles fast as locals start their day with a bear paw or almond croissant, but the sit-down brunch and lunch menu entices with smoked salmon quiches and forest-foraged mushroom pasties.

Rosario Resort and Spa

This gorgeous vacation spot, tucked away on a forested peninsula on Orcas Island, offers some serious waterfront views overlooking Cascade Bay. At the resort’s Mansion Restaurant, the menu highlights locally sourced ingredients in dishes like smoked halibut and potato croquettes and coal-roasted duck with grilled zucchini and ramp pistou.

Matthew’s Smokehouse

Formerly a steak and seafood restaurant, owner Matthew Carpenter changed the Deer Harbor family business into a smokehouse in 2020, serving up brisket, pulled pork, and sausages in sandwich or plate form alongside classic comfort and soul food sides like mac and cheese, collard greens, and potato salad. In a nod to its roots, juicy cheeseburgers and fish tacos with beer-battered Pacific cod still grace the menu. For an extra dose of warm Southern-style hospitality, a big grassy lawn with picnic tables, cornhole games, fire pits, and views toward the Deer Harbor Marina makes for a buzzy community gathering place on sunny afternoons.

Buck Bay Shellfish Farm

The drive to the far side of Orcas Island is worth it for the bay-fresh oysters, garlicky steamed clams, and other local seafood at this no-frills bistro in the town of Olgas. Dine outdoors on the sun-drenched grassy lawns overlooking the idyllic bay where the farm grows its own Salish Sea oysters and clams. Start with BB Farm’s oysters on the half-shell and halibut ceviche before moving on to mains like decadent crab mac and cheese with red rock and Dungeness crab meat mixed with gruyere and smoked Tillamook cheese on panko-crusted cavatappi pasta. The Island Roll, a brioche roll heaped with Pacific cod, shrimp, scallops, and halibut with herb aioli and a sprinkling of salmon roe, is another favorite.

Foraging is a cornerstone of this San Juan Island restaurant, hidden in a forested plot away from busy Friday Harbor. The day-to-day menu is impossible to predict, but it can include ramps, fiddlehead ferns, sea beans, and whatever else is growing outside. Local farms and fishermen give the menu a boost on meat and produce with raw oysters, duck breast, and racks of lamb.

Downriggers - Friday Harbor

Yes, it’s true that this stylish seafood eatery’s location right by the ferry dock in Friday Harbor can make it pretty busy, especially in the summer high season. But it’s worth braving the wait. With an airy outdoor patio and large windows looking out onto the bay, both indoors and outdoors come with fantastic views of the port, with bald eagles flying overhead and float planes cruising in for a landing. This is the classic San Juans backdrop for Downriggers’ Pacific Northwest sea-sourced and land-based offerings like scallop gnocchi or locally raised organic chicken with truffle jus and mushrooms. One must-order is the crab tater tots, with chunks of Dungeness crab and shredded potato mixed and battered together.

Guemes Island General Store

Largely residential Guemes Island has a refreshing lack of tourist attractions. The island’s living room, though, is the Guemes Island General Store, near the ferry terminal. A big patio and live music draw evening visitors, and full-fledged meals and shareable charcuterie boards are built around local ingredients like Skagit Valley beef, Methow Valley grains, Samish Bay cheese, island-grown mushrooms, and Salish Sea salmon.

A view of the Guemes Island General Store, a two-story building with a sign out front that says “General Store,” and diners sitting on an outdoor patio

Bakery San Juan

A favorite of locals and visitors alike, Bakery San Juan has all the requisite favorites from the oven: pastries, cookies, cakes, and thin-crust pizza, plus bread made with wild yeast for hearty sandwiches. They’re all great to-go options for anyone headed to the ferry. The Island Pepperoni, with the bakery’s mozzarella and island-made pepperoni, is a must-try, and frozen whole pizzas are available, too.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bakery San Juan (@bakerysanjuan)

Haven Kitchen & Bar

There aren’t many dining options available on Lopez Island, but residents of “the friendly island” can find a wide-ranging selection at this casual waterfront restaurant in the main hub of Lopez Village. Eclectic options range from fried cauliflower “wings” to foraged mushroom toasts to a slow-roasted pork shoulder burrito. The wood-fired pizzas here are also excellent, as are the seasonally inspired cocktails.

A top-down image of food at Haven, with a soup on the right, along with several cocktails

Ursa Minor’s Nick Coffey — who trained in Seattle under acclaimed chef Matt Dillon — is helping to transform his corner of the San Juans into a legit dining destination. Staffing shortages have put a hold on in-person dining in the rustic-chic dining room but the to-go game is still strong with the likes of hand-sized fried chicken sandwiches and fermented-and-double-fried French fries.

Lopez Island Creamery

Before hopping on the ferry in Anacortes to head out to the islands, make a detour to this San Juans staple that’s been churning out small-batch, handcrafted ice cream for more than 40 years using local cream and berries. Originally founded on Lopez Island in 1982, the creamery recently moved to the mainland both to reduce its carbon footprint from frequent ferry trips and expand its operations, opening a splashy new factory and storefront in Anacortes in early 2022.

Where To Eat & Drink On Orcas Island

Where To Eat & Drink On Orcas Island image

Aimee Rizzo

October 24, 2023

A trip to the San Juans is just another great part of living in Seattle. You drive an hour and a half to Anacortes, hop on a boat, and then you’re in another world, surrounded by marine wildlife, beautiful nature, and small-town coziness. And while there are 172 named islands and reefs to visit, Orcas is one of three that you can get to by ferry. Between all the hiking, kayaking, and whale-watching, you’re going to need to eat and drink—which is where this guide comes in handy. Whether you’re in the mood for pizza, enchiladas, or giant muffins, here are our favorite restaurants and bars on Orcas Island.

imageoverride image

A nice sit-down meal at Houlme (formerly known as Hogstone's Wood Oven) is simply a given on any trip to Orcas. The restaurant just consists of one little magical room where you sit with friends, passing around beer-pickled clams, pizzas topped with goat cheese and garden herbs, glasses of low-intervention wine, and really f*cking good buttery potato balls with cheddar foam. It's incredibly special, delicious, and downright mandatory if you went through all of the trouble to place yourself on this island.

imageoverride image

The Barnacle

Aside from the closed-until-further-notice Champagne Champagne (we miss you), The Barnacle is our favorite bar on Orcas. When the lights are low, all of the reclaimed wood and ambient rope makes it feel kind of like you’re in an old ship bobbing on open water—only you’re a little tipsy from fantastic cocktails instead of seasickness. Their drinks have a ton of variety, from smoked Manhattans to mojitos with freshly-muddled blueberries, mint, peach, and Mexican mole bitters. If you’re a patio pal, they have a gravel patio with extra seating.

imageoverride image

Brown Bear Baking

While there may be a few brunch staples on this island, what you really need instead is a big post-hike latte and a continental breakfast involving pastries from Brown Bear. For starters, we wouldn’t mind requesting their cream cheese-stuffed pumpkin muffin loaded with crunchy pepita streusel in place of birthday cake every year. Between those and orange morning buns, ham and cheese tartines on housemade bread, and crackly almond bear claws, don’t be surprised if you end up stopping here every morning instead of branching out to try something new. Also, don’t be surprised when you grab a couple of bags of granola for the ferry ride home.

imageoverride image

Mijitas Mexican Kitchen

Mijitas serves such great Mexican food that we’re almost angry they don’t have a location in Seattle. Silver lining: It’s just another excuse to make the trip. Whether you’re looking for a handful of fried prawn tacos for takeout or a plate of delicious Dungeness crab enchiladas out on their brick-lined patio, Mijitas is a terrific Mexican restaurant you shouldn’t overlook. Even if you just pop by for guacamole and horchata.

Girl Meets Dirt

Girl Meets Dirt isn’t a restaurant—it’s a retail shop that makes incredible homemade fruit preserves, bitters, and shrubs. But we say it still counts, especially if you twist open a jar of quince marmalade for a taste in the parking lot. You may have seen a limited number of Girl Meets Dirt products at Seattle supermarkets, but there’s nothing quite like standing in front of their entire stock, all while sniffing out apples, pears, and plums steeping away in the back. Not to mention they also offer special edition reserve spreads, Laguiole cheese knives, San Juan sea salt, and custom tumblers made by Forest Ceramics. And if you’re reading this with no plans to travel at all, they have an online shop that ships nationwide.

Island Hoppin' Brewery

Playing cornhole at Island Hoppin’'s outdoor space is a great way to spend an afternoon. Their beer is very good—like the “Feel The Bern” chili-infused blonde, or their hoppy Elwha Rock IPA. The best combination in the house, though, is a frosty glass of raspberry wheat alongside a package of Lummi Island smoked salmon. Just be sure you have a designated driver—there aren’t any rideshares available on Orcas Island, and this brewery is pretty far off the main Eastsound strip. You could walk, but we can personally attest to the fact that it's not a fun stroll.

Clever Cow Creamery

Someone wise once said that vacations aren’t complete without ice cream. OK, we admit it, that was us. Still, Clever Cow is the best spot to grab a scoop on the island, whether you have yours in a housemade waffle cone or as an affogato garnished with chocolate-covered espresso beans. Their flavors range from local lavender and vanilla bean to matcha almond and kale balsamic, and everything here is a pretty stupendous treat no matter the time of year.

Doe Bay Wine Company

Our ultimate happy place on Orcas Island is on a barstool in the back corner at this little wine and cheese shop, with a flight and large wedge of fontina. While you’ll find a lot of locally produced bottles here, we recommend Doe Bay’s own label, called The Orcas Project—their pinot noir Rosé is one of the best in the state, and their smoky-tart skin-contact Marsanne would rule any campfire gathering you attend.

imageoverride image

Orcas Island Farmer's Market

No trip to Orcas is complete without a lap (or two) at the farmer’s market, and it’s a great place to get a literal taste of the island in one afternoon. There are a bunch of treats to buy like baked goods, jams, and even personal pizzas, but the one thing you can’t miss are the homemade Salvadorean pupusas. The masa dough is fluffy, the fillings are flavorful, and the accompanying curtido slaw is tangy with the right amount of acidity. Grab one along with a stack of carnitas tacos and watermelon aguas frescas for a pretty perfect to-go lunch.

Boathouse Ciderworks

When you’re getting ready to go back to Seattle, even with a booked ferry reservation, you still need to arrive an hour before the boat departs. This leaves you with some time to kill. We like to think that’s why Boathouse Ciderworks exists. It’s a bar right next to the Orcas ferry docks that serves a few different types of hard ciders brewed in-house, from classic dry and semi-sweet to versions infused with Cascade hops or rose petals. So, you could sit in the car cleaning out your glove compartment for 45 minutes, or you could go drink a flight while snacking on bowls of spiced popcorn or hummus on their waterfront deck. Your call.

More
