Most cruises follow a circular route between the southern end of Margaret Island at Margaret Bridge and just south of Liberty Bridge. This route covers most of the significant landmarks mentioned above in Budapest.

Offbeat Landmarks

budapest river trip

South of Liberty Bridge are two nice-to-see-but-not-obligatory landmarks, the National Theatre (below) and the Palace of Arts (above), which are as beautiful as the Parliament and Buda Castle.

Some cruises, like Legenda, Hungaria Koncert and Silverline, have a complete itinerary that includes these offbeat landmarks. ‍ ‍

1. Best Sightseeing Cruise Overall With Welcome Drink and Audio Guide

The illuminated Budapest Parliament at night, from the perspective of a Danube river cruise.

✔️ Best All-Around  — This cruise has it all for a complete sightseeing experience.

✔️ Welcome Drink  — Choose champagne, wine, beer, a soft drink, or mineral water.

✔️ Great Ship  — Modern, spacious, and well-kept, offering superb views from both decks.

✔️ Audio Guide  — Crystal-clear sound quality via headphones, and available in 30 languages.

✔️ Full Danube Curcuit  — Covers all the must-see and off-beat landmarks, from Margaret Island to the National Theatre/Palace of Arts.

✔️ Family Friendly - Generous discounts for children, including free tickets for ages 0-9 and 50% for ages 10-14.

❌  Pricy  — It's a bit more expensive than other cruises, but the added value makes up for it.

❌  Missing Free Lemonade  — It's not highlighted that the free lemonade is only offered in the summer season.

❌  Headphone Challenges and Hiccups  — The first pair didn't work, the second had a cable that was too short for my height (I'm 190cm), and the third functional pair lacked optimal comfort.

💡 Tip: All cruises have a generous cancellation policy , allowing a full refund if canceled 24 hours before the activity. Additionally, they offer a reserve now, pay later flexible payment scheme.

Legenda's river cruise offers a complete sightseeing experience with a  welcome drink  and an  audio guide in 30 languages.

Audio guide languages include: English, German, French, Italian, Croatian, Dutch, Hungarian, Hebrew, Arabic, Latvian, Finnish, Turkish, Russian, Portuguese, Estonian, Chinese, Thai, Romanian, Korean, Danish, Greek, Swedish, Slovenian, Japanese, Czech, Norwegian, Slovak, Polish, Lithuanian, Spanish.

Their  ship is modern and spacious , providing excellent views from both decks.

The  itinerary covers the iconic sights from Margaret Island to the National Theatre and Palace of Arts.

This cruise is  pricy but offers more value that backs up the higher price. The audio guide has clear sound quality through headphones but needs improvement in content quality and headphone comfort.

Overall, this cruise provides a  high-quality sightseeing experience with no major negatives , which is why it's number one on this list.

About Legenda City Cruises

Legenda is the oldest and most reputable cruise company in Budapest. They’ve been operating since (at least) 1990 and are still going strong.

Detailed Breakdown

Sightseeing & views.

The illuminated Budapest Palace and Buda side at night, from the perspective of a Danube river cruise.

  • Like on any boat tour in Budapest, the cityscape is breathtaking throughout the trip. The  best spot for sightseeing  on this cruise is the  top deck .
  • The cruise itinerary covers all of Budapest's landmarks, including the National Opera and the Palace of Arts.
💡 Tip:  For the best sightseeing and photo opportunities , choose a ship with large open-air decks that offer unobstructed 360° views like Legenda, Rubin Group, and Portum.

  • The Gondola is a modern vessel that offers spacious seating, openable windows during the summer, a bar, an audio guide with headphones, and AC/heating.

  • The cruise kicks off with receiving a complimentary welcome drink – choose from champagne, wine, beer, a soft drink, or mineral water. You also get to enjoy an extra free lemonade in the summer season.

The Lower Deck

  • The lower deck has a cozy bar at the back, near the stairs to the top deck. Rows of comfy seats offer plenty of room to move about, and the large windows guarantee fantastic views .

The Upper Deck

The top deck of Legenda City Cruises' sightseeing boat.

  • It's spacious with unobstructed 360° views from every angle. Ideal for photography and soaking in the city's beauty. Blankets are available upon request.

The Audio Guide

The audio guide controller and headphones on Legenda City Cruises' sightseeing boat.

  • This was the only audio guide could actually be heard out of all the cruises, thanks to the headphones, as the other ships have loudspeakers.
  • The audio quality was excellent , and the narration was available in 30 languages.
  • There's room for improvement contentwise. Around half of the mentioned sights aren't relevant to riverside attractions. Plus, the c ontent could dive deeper into the city's history, culture, and be more historically correct instead of telling stories, trivia and myths.
  • I encountered some issues with the headphones - the first set was defective, the second set had a cable that was too short, and the third set was uncomfortable and hard to wear.
💡 All the other cruises offer loudspeaker audio guides. Loudspeaker audio guides are often inaudible due to passenger noise. Other common issues include un-synced commentary, irrelevant sights/details mentioned, and infrequent audio.

2. Budapest Night Booze Cruise with Unlimited Prosecco and Lemonade

A row of glasses with prosecco on Rubin Group's booze cruise.

✔️  #1 Most Affordable Booze Cruise  — Experience Budapest's most economical unlimited prosecco cruise on the Danube.

✔️  Excellent Ship — The ship features a charming open-air top deck and two indoor decks with a sophisticated cocktail party-like ambiance.

✔️  Unlimited Drinks  — Drink all the prosecco and lemonade you want.

✔️  Leisurely 90-Minute Ride  — More than enough time to savor your drinks, though drinking responsibly is advised by your friends at Prosecco and Co.

❌ Mediocre Food Platter — For an extra 10€, the food platter is disappointing and hardly qualifies as 'gourmet.'

❌ Remote Meeting Point — The departure area near Margaret Island is not easily accessible.

❌ Inaudible Audio Guide — The ambient noise from passengers drowns out the audio guide, but most are too busy enjoying their drinks to notice.

❓ Is buying food or drinks while on a river cruise in Budapest possible? 💡 Food is not typically included on standard sightseeing cruises. However, you can purchase snacks and drinks at the ship's kitchen bar.

The Rubin Group's boat tour is an excellent choice for those seeking an affordable cocktail-party atmosphere with unlimited prosecco and lemonade. The attentive servers are always on hand to keep guests' glasses full.

The top deck boasts breathtaking 360° views of the cityscape during the 90-minute river cruise, while the two indoor decks offer a cozy and inviting ambiance.

As for the less rosy aspects of this cruise, the optional food platter isn't worth the 10€ price, and the audio guide may be difficult to hear over the party noise. Additionally, the meeting point is further from the city center, so getting there may take some extra time and effort.

Overall, if you're looking for a leisurely cruise centered around drinks and stunning views, Rubin Group's boat tour is an outstanding choice.

🎥 Video : Watch this Youtube video I made of Rubin Group's unlimited prosecco cruise. 📷 Instagram : Check out reels and photos of Rubin Group.

About Rubin Group

Rubin Group   is another solid company, operating since (at least) 2015. They specialize in gastro-themed events rather than standard sightseeing cruises.

Rubin Group's booze cruise ship, with guests waiting to board on the right.

  • The ship was impressive with a spacious 3-level design and a cocktail party atmosphere . Passengers were seated at 2-person tables .

The Top Deck

The illuminated Liberty Bridge Citadel Statue on Gellért Hill at night, from the perspective of Rubin Group's booze cruise.

  • The top deck offered stunning, unobstructed 360° views . It was the perfect spot for taking photos and enjoying the sights . This is the best place to be during the warmer months.

‍ The Mid and Bottom Deck

The interior of Rubin Group's booze cruise with guests enjoying themselves.

  • There are two indoor decks with  plenty of seats and tables  where the atmosphere is  cozy and inviting .
  • The first passengers to board tend to get the best top deck spots, so it's  worth arriving early   if you want a prime spot .

The interior of Rubin Group's booze cruise with guests enjoying themselves.

The Drinks Refills

  • The  servers were   attentive , constantly  refilling glasses  with prosecco as soon as they were empty.
  • Self-service lemonade  is available in two flavors — regular and one with a strange cucumber taste.

The Assorted Food Platter

Assorted food platter on Rubin Group's booze cruise.

  • The optional assorted food platter for 10€ wasn't what I was expecting.
  • It didn't match the advertised images and wasn't gourmet but ordinary , including simple fruits and vegetables, cheese and ham with two sauces, and a pastry dessert. The portion size was smaller than expected.
  • Save your money and skip the platter.
  • The loudspeaker  audio guide was inaudible  due to the passengers crowding out the narration.
  • They increased the volume upon my request, but the  audio guide's content was too basic .
  • 📅 Schedule: every day at 19:00 and 21:00
  • ❌ Pets allowed: no, except service animals
  • ❌ Wheelchair accessible: no
  • ✔️ Baby stroller accessible: yes (at least the bottom deck)
  • ✔️ Infant/children discount: free for children (age 0-3)
  • 📍 Meeting point: Budapest, Szent István park 5, 1137
  • ❌ The meeting point is north of Margaret Bridge , which is slightly out of the way compared to other centrally located cruises.
  • 🗺️ Use the 2 or 4/6 tram line  and get off at Jászai Mari tér . From there, walk 500 meters towards the north of Margaret Bridge until you spot a large red "0" sign .

3. Best Value Sightseeing Cruise With Welcome Drink

The Budapest Palace during the day, from the perspective of Portum Lines Crusing's sightseeing cruise.

✔️  Exceptional Value  — Costs 40-50% less than Legenda, while still offering a stellar experience, albeit with fewer non-essential amenities (such as audio guides and complimentary lemonade).

✔️  Fun and Lively — This cruise attracts a younger crowd, creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere.

✔️  Welcome Drink  — Options include prosecco, a seasonal cocktail, mulled wine, or a soft drink.

✔️ Great Ship  — The ship is modern, spacious, and well-maintained, with excellent views from both its decks.

❌  Inconvenient Location  — The meeting point near Margaret Island is not in the city center, thus getting there is a hassle.

❌  Prone to Crowding — The ship may feel cramped during peak travel times, especially the top deck.

❌  Limited Open Air Seats  — The coveted open-air tables on the top deck are claimed quickly and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

❓  Is it possible to reserve seats on river cruises? 💡 Seats on most river cruises are assigned on a  first-come, first-served  basis. But some dinner cruises might let you reserve a specific spot.

Portum Lines Cruising is an excellent  alternative to Legenda , offering a  lively and fun  sightseeing experience that's especially  popular with younger crowds .

Upon arrival, guests receive a  complimentary welcome drink of  prosecco, seasonal cocktails, mulled wine, or a soft drink.

While they  don't offer  amenities like an  audio guide or complimentary lemonade , the ship is modern and well-maintained, with  excellent views  of Budapest's top sights.

The  top deck  offers both open-air 360° and weather-protected roof-covered sections. While the  lower level  is cozy and comfortable, it's  best to head upstairs  to enjoy the views.

Reaching the  meeting point is inconvenient , and the  ship can get crowded  due to its popularity, especially on the top deck.

Overall, Portum Lines offers an  exceptional river cruise  experience at  great value , perfect for those seeking a fun atmosphere.

About Portum Lines

Portum Lines is a solid company operating since (at least) 2014. Their offerings are pretty slim compared to others but still superb in quality.

The Budapest Parliament during the day, from the perspective of Portum Lines Crusing's sightseeing cruise.

  • During the boat tour, you can enjoy the flawless cityscape of Budapest from certain spots with clear 360° views .
  • The cruise itinerary covers most of Budapest's landmarks, except the National Opera and the Palace of Arts.

  • The ship is spacious and well-maintained , with two levels similar to Legenda's sightseeing ship.

  • The top deck is divided into three areas - the front, middle, and back.
  • The front and back sections are open-air , with perfect 360° views - these are the best places to be.
💡 Tip: The best open air seats go fast! You must arrive early and be at the front of the line to snatch them.

  • There is a wide indoor section in the middle with tables and chairs lining both sides near the windows.
  • Although the views from here are good, they are even better outside in the open air section.

  • The lower level is comfortable, cozy, and spacious, with heating and air conditioning to provide a pleasant experience, even on rainy or cold days.
  • The lower deck is an indoor space similar to the upper deck's covered section.
  • Additionally, there is a small bar on board.

  • 🗺️ Use the 2 or 4/6 tram line  and get off at Jászai Mari tér . From there, walk 500 meters towards the north of Margaret Bridge until you spot the Dock 42 sign .

4. No Frills Budget Sightseeing Cruise

budapest river trip

When it comes to Budapest cruises, Silverline Sightseeing Cruise is a solid choice with friendly staff and a comfortable meeting point, but it doesn't quite stand out from the crowd.

Unlike most cruises, Silverline's cruise ticket does not include a welcome drink . However, the price is on the low-end . If it were not for their out-of-the-way location, I would recommend the Portum's similarly cheap cruise in a heartbeat.

With a relaxed 70-minute cruising time, this ride offers a leisurely pace that allows you to take in the sights and enjoy the moment.

They used to offer an audio guide , but it suffered from the common issue of being drowned out by the crowd's noise and not being in sync with the landmarks. They seem to have done away with it altogether.

In summary, Silverline's sightseeing cruise provides a leisurely tour of Budapest's iconic landmarks on the Danube. While not exceptional, it offers a decent experience.

About Silverline Cruises Ltd.

Silverline is a solid company operating since (at least) 2011. They have a decent range of cruise offerings, and run popular cruises in the sightseeing category.

budapest river trip

  • Like on any boat tour in Budapest, the cityscape is breathtaking throughout the trip. However, Silverline's ships have a roof and support columns on the top deck which means they do not provide a clear 360° view .

budapest river trip

  • The ship itself is decent , but it doesn't claim the title of the most modern or spacious vessel on the waters. It gets the job done without being overly impressive.
  • Silverline rotates boats frequently, so you may not get the same one I did.

budapest river trip

  • During my trip, I was on the larger two-level boat that previously had rows of seats, but has since been replaced with tables and chairs (according to photos).
  • The smaller boat now has the rows of seats , which I found to be cramped and lacking in legroom .
  • Both ships have roofs and support columns which partially block the view .

The Main Deck

budapest river trip

  • The main deck offers comfort with ample space, heating, and air conditioning . While indoor views are average , better panoramas await at the front chairs or the open-air section.
  • Welcoming and friendly staff at the entrance make a positive impression. I haven't interacted with the ship's crew so I cannot comment on that.

Unneccesary Stop

  • During my cruise, we made a stop at Batthyány tér (Buda) , even though no passengers got on or off.
  • 📅 Schedule: every day at 11:00am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm, 5:00pm, 6:00pm, 7:00pm, 7:30pm, 8:30pm, 9:00pm.
  • ✔️Air conditioning/heating: yes
  • 📍 Meeting point: Budapest Jane Henning rakpart 10, Dock 11, 1052
  • 🗺️ Use tram line 2 to arrive at Széchenyi István tér or Március 15 tér stop . Go towards Elizabeth bridge (white suspension bridge) and look for Silverline Cruises .

5. Best Cocktail Cruise With Three Cocktails

Cocktails with Buda castle scenery in the background.

Enjoy the stunning river views of Budapest while sipping on three delicious cocktails with Silverline's cruise.

However, it's important to note that there is no audio guide available and some of the views may be partially blocked by side columns.

🎥 Video: Take a look at the teaser video for the cruise to get an idea of what to expect. Keep in mind that the Cocktail Cruise and Pizza & Beer cruise are happening at the same time and place.

The beautiful sunset sky, from the perspective of Portum Lines Crusing's sightseeing cruise.

  • The scenery is breathtaking and you're taken all the way down to the Palace of Arts & National Theatre .
  • For the best views, head to the top deck . However, taking great photos can be challenging due to the roof and side columns obstructing the view.
  • The lower deck doesn't offer great opportunities for sightseeing or taking photos.

  • The ship is functional , but it is not the newest, most modern, or luxurious vessel available.

Drinks Menu

  • You can choose three cocktails from the options displayed in the image above.
  • Your cocktail may be served in plastic pint glasses instead of the fancy cocktail glasses shown in the picture.
  • 📅 Schedule: Every day 16:00, 18:00, 20:00, 22:00
  • ❌ Baby stroller accessible: no
  • ✔️ Infant/children discount: free for children (age 0-6) but food/drinks aren't included.
  • 📍 Meeting point: Budapest, Jane Haining Rakpart, Dokk 11, 1052

💡 Cruise alternative : Check out Hungaria Koncert's drinks cruise , which offers a cocktail cruise with folk music, onboard an atmospheric and luxurious ship.

6. Budapest Dinner Cruise with Buffet Libre, Folk Dance Show & Music

The dinner area of Hungaria Koncert's river cruise boat with guests enjoying themselves.

✔️  Buffet Libre  — this dinner cruise is a great way to taste various Hungarian dishes.

✔️  Two Welcome Drinks  — you can choose from various alcoholic and non-alcoholic options.

✔️  Great Atmosphere  — you feel like you're in an early 20th century cabaret and forget about the outside world for 2 hours.

✔️  Folk Dance and Music Show  — features one of the best live folklore music and dance shows with authentic and award-winning performers.

✔️  Full Danube Circuit  — the cruise covers everything worth seeing, from Margaret Island all the way down to the National Theatre/Palace of Arts.

✔️  Long Cruise  — the cruise lasts 1.5-2 hours, which gives ample time to eat, drink and see the sights at night.

❌  Not Great for Sightseeing  — the views from the ship are mediocre (no 360°, fences blocking the view), spaces for sightseeing are both few/small, the dinner and folk show are more interesting so you'll focus on that and won't see the sights.

❌  Not Fine Dining Quality  — the food is fine, but mid-range restaurants (and up) serve better quality food.

Hungaria Koncert runs this excellent dinner cruise with live Hungarian folk music and dance performance.

There's an unlimited buffet of various Hungarian dishes and a vibe that’s comparable to an early 20th century cabaret.

🎥 Video: Watch my video summary with live footage of Hungaria Koncert's dinner cruise.

About Hungaria Koncert

Hungaria Koncert is a cruise operator and organizes different touristic activities. They've been operating since (at least) 1995.

Cruise Duration

  • This cruise lasts 1.5 or 2 hours depending on which cruise you choose — 7 pm or 10 pm . This gives ample time to enjoy the delicious food, the unique folk performance, and explore the ship.

What's Included

Two Hungaria folk dancers on Hungaria Koncert's dinner cruise coming up the stairs.

  • You get to enjoy the show of award-winning music and dance performers who are going to give you an amazing time.

Laid table with cutlery and food on Hungaria Koncert's dinner cruise.

  • ‍ You get access to a buffet libre of a variety of Hungarian dishes . Meals include goulash soup, stuffed cabbage, beef stew, somlói Galuska, a variety of strudels, and more.
  • The quality of the food is good but isn’t Michelin 2-star grade. Even so, it’s a great way to try out a variety of Hungarian dishes at once.

Dance and Music Performance

  • On the top deck, there are folklore dance and music performances for dinner guests only.
  • The music gave the trip an early 20th century cabaret vibe .

  • The interior of the ship has a classical and luxurious feel , including chandeliers, a teak wood interior, custom-made floor carpet, intarsia decorated walls, and more.

  • There are two symmetrical indoor sections on the top deck and a total of four outdoor areas - two on the sides and two at each end of the ship.

  • The outdoor side areas are available for sightseeing guests; the rest of the level is reserved for dinner guests.
  • T he sides have 180° views , while the front and back are 360° , but fences obstruct the view.

The interior of Hungaria Koncert's river cruise boat with guests enjoying themselves.

  • The lower deck has the same look and feel as the rest of the ship. There is only one area accessible - immediately to the right of the entrance. This area is for people with non-dinner tickets. It includes a bar with reasonable prices, tables with chairs, and a folklore trio performance.
  • 📅 Schedule: every day at 19:00, and on weekends at 22:00
  • ✔️ Infant/children discount: free for children (age 0-5)
  • 📍 Meeting point: Budapest, Id. Antall József rkp., 1051
  • 🗺️ Use tram line 2 to arrive at Széchenyi István tér stop.  You can find Hungaria Koncert next to Széchenyi Chain bridge.
💡 Pricing 55€ vs. 72€ — What's the difference? Those with a regular dinner cruise ticket (55€) won't be able to see the folk dance show - they need to buy the 72€ ticket if they do. There's nothing stopping you from going over to the other side for a sneak peek, though.

7. Best Cocktails, Craft Beer or Wine Tasting Cruise

Hungarian folk music performers entertaining guests with violin music on Hugaria Koncert's cruise boat.

I have already mentioned the dinner cruise offered by Hungaria Koncert above.

However, they also offer a more affordable boat tour with drinks , which takes place on the same ship.

The only difference is that this event is on the ship's lower deck and features a live folk violin trio to entertain you.

There is also an open-air area where you can drink and enjoy spending time.

The basic ticket is reasonably priced and includes a drink . You can also upgrade to options offering craft beer, cocktails, exquisite wines, or even unlimited drinks .

The atmosphere is reminiscent of an early 20th-century cabaret.

🎥 Video: Watch my video summary with footage of Hungaria Koncert's cruise. Even though this is about their dinner cruise, you'll be on the same vessel.

Indoor Area

  • The bottom deck area has the same 20th-century cabaret feel as the rest of the ship.

Outdoor Area

  • The sides of the view offer 180° views, so unfortunately you can't see both Buda and Pest at the same time.

budapest river trip

  • The basic ticket is reasonably priced and includes a drink .
  • You can also upgrade to options offering craft beer, cocktails, exquisite wines, or even unlimited drinks .
  • If you buy the more expensive tickets you will be seated upstairs in the dinner guest area instead of slightly less luxurious bottom deck area.

8. Best Pizza and Unlimited Beer Cruise

Enjoy the stunning river views of Budapest while sipping unlimited beer and one pizza with Silverline's cruise.

9. Cheapest Sightseeing Cruise

The Budapest Palace during the day, from the perspective of Mahart-BKK's sightseeing cruise.

✔️  Cheapest Cruise in Budapest  — perfect for travelers that value affordability.

✔️  Unlimited Cruises  — for the same day with one ticket, excellent in case you have the urge to binge cruise in Budapest.

✔️  Great for Getting Around  — there's an option to disembark on Margaret Island or at any of the four other stops.

❌  Low Quality  — I'm not mincing words here, this is a bare-bones, low-quality sightseeing cruise.

❌  Smell of Fuel   — a strange smell is often present on the boat.

❌  Five Stops  — the boat docks and undocks 5 times during the cruise, which isn't fun.

❌ Crowded —  the ship is small and cramped to begin with but wait till the Hungarian pupils on school trips arrive.

‍ Update: This boat tour is only available during the summer season.

A dirt-cheap sightseeing cruise that ranks low in quality compared to other options. Great if you're on an  extremely  tight budget.

Note that this cruise does not have public reviews, as it is a public service boat service operated by a government-owned company (Mahart). Tickets must be purchased on the spot and cannot be reserved in advance.

🎥 Video: Watch my video summary with live footage of BK-Mahart's sightseeing cruise.

Detailed breakdown

BKK-Mahart's sightseeing boat.

  • It seemed old and in need of renovation.

The top deck with rows of seating on Mahart-BKKs's sightseeing boat.

  • Poor seat layout , crowded, partial view due to roof and side columns. It wasn't too crowded when I went, so it was acceptable.

The Bottom Deck

The interior of BKK-Mahart's sightseeing boat.

  • The smell of gas/fuel , poor seat layout, dim lighting, mediocre views, and uncomfortable seat cushions.

5 Stops During the Cruise

Embarking/disembarking on Mahart-BKKs's sightseeing boat.

  • The ship makes 5 stops , which takes away from the experience, but allows for a drop-off at Margaret Island . The smell of gas intensified during docking.

No Pre-Booking Available

  • It is not possible to book this cruise in advance, but tickets can be purchased in person at the BKK-Mahart kiosk .
  • 📅 Schedule: Tuesday-Saturday at 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00 and 20:00 (don't go on Mondays like I did!)

10. Historic 19th Century Steam Boat Cruise

budapest river trip

❓ Should I book river cruise tickets in advance? Is it worth it? 💡 Yes  — It's worth reserving your ticket in advance to ensure your place on the ship, although you can purchase tickets in person.

This is Budapest's only boat tour offering an authentic 19th-century historic cruise experience . The ship is a replica of the Hungarian paddle steamer , the Kisfaludy, which operated between 1847 and 1887 on Lake Balaton thanks to the initiative of István Széchenyi.

The cruise includes a welcome drink and an English audio guide (via loudspeakers).

The ship features an open-air panorama deck at the front (the best place for 360° views), a semi-covered rear area , and a small top deck near the captain's cabin.

There's also a must-see maritime museum on the bottom deck.

In summary, this cruise provides a high-quality sightseeing experience infused with historic flair you can't get elsewhere in Budapest.

🎥 Virtual tour: take a look at the ship through their interactive virtual tour .

  • Like on any boat tour in Budapest, the cityscape is breathtaking throughout the trip. The best spot for sightseeing on this cruise is the front panorama deck , where you board the ship.

  • The boat tour offers an authentic historical experience aboard a replica of a 19th-century paddle steamer , the Kisfaludy, that once sailed Lake Balaton.

19th Century Maritime Museum

  • On the lower deck, there is a captivating maritime museum that displays the lifestyle of 19th century sailors .

  • The small top deck has four tables , but the chimney and captain's cabin somewhat block the view .
  • The orientation of half the tables is perpendicular to the Danube, so one side of the city is always behind your back . The main deck doesn't have this issue.

budapest river trip

  • The main deck has a front open-air area with a 360° panorama . Additionally, there is a roof-covered rear area with equally splendid views.

  • You can take a closer look at the paddle wheel in the middle or visit the maritime museum on the bottom deck.
  • You can also find free umbrellas , which they likely hand out during rainy weather.
  • During the cruise, you can enjoy an English-speaking audio guide through loudspeakers.
  • The guide was synchronized with the attractions we passed by and provided brief introductions, trivia, and historical information about the landmarks.
  • Sometimes loudspeakers can get drowned out by the noise of a crowd, which makes them hard to hear. I didn't experience this during my daytime cruise, but it may be more challenging to hear during the more popular night cruise .
  • In between the narration, there's a pleasant classical piano music playing.
  • 📅 Schedule: every day at 4:30pm, 5:30pm, 7:00pm, 8:30pm, 10:00pm.
  • ❌ Air conditioning/heating: no

Frequently Asked Questions

How can i prepare for a river cruise during the winter or summer.

Summer: Have sunscreen, water, an umbrella, and sunglasses for daytime cruises in the warmer months.

In rainy weather, the open-air deck may be closed. In stormy weather, cruises are canceled. They'll either refund you or offer an alternative cruise if this happens. ‍

Winter: The heated cabin's windows tend to fog up, blocking the views, depending on how well the windows are insulated.

You can always go out to get a few photo shots, then rush back to the safety of the heated cabin. Open-air sightseeing during the winter can be less enjoyable due to cold weather and winds, so it's best to dress warmly, wear layers, and protect your face.

How can I avoid overcrowded boat tours?

If you want to avoid crowded boat tours, you can follow these steps: visit during the off-season, choose daytime tours instead of night tours, or opt for more expensive cruises.

About the Danube River

The Danube River is Europe’s second-longest river, meandering through 10 countries. Originating in Germany's Black Forest, it flows southeastward, carving its way through Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, and others before emptying into the Black Sea. Renowned for its scenic beauty, the Danube's banks are dotted with historic cities and charming villages.

The Danube River is not just a geographical feature but also a cultural and historical artery that has shaped the identity of the regions it traverses. Its waters have witnessed the rise and fall of empires, the exchange of ideas and goods, and the blending of diverse cultures. Along its banks, you'll find architectural marvels like Budapest's Parliament Building, medieval fortresses like the Iron Gate, and charming villages steeped in tradition.

No matter the cruise you choose, you shall begin your journey from one of these piers. Every boarding point is strategically located in the city hotspots, making it easier for you to explore the shopping corners, night markets, food streets, and more.

Here are some considerations for different times of the year: Spring (April to May): Spring can be a lovely time to cruise the Danube as the weather starts to warm up, and the riverbanks come alive with blossoms. The crowds are generally smaller during this period compared to the summer months. You will enjoy pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery. However, water levels can vary in spring potentially affecting the cruise itinerary. Summer (June to August): Summer is the peak season for Danube River cruises. The weather is warm and the days are long, providing plenty of daylight for sightseeing. You will have the opportunity to explore charming towns and cities along the river but be prepared for larger crowds in popular tourist destinations. Fall (September to October): Fall is another excellent time for a Danube River cruise. The weather remains pleasant, and you’ll experience beautiful autumn foliage along the riverbanks. The crowds begin to thin out as the season progresses, making it a more peaceful time to cruise. Wine enthusiasts may also enjoy visiting vineyards and tasting local wines in the Danube Valley during this time. Winter (November to March): While winter is the least popular time for Danube River cruises, it can offer a unique and festive experience. Some cruise lines offer Christmas market-themed cruises, allowing you to explore charming holiday markets in European cities along the river. The weather is cold, so be prepared for cooler temperatures, but the atmosphere can be enchanting.

Here are some well-regarded cruise lines known for their Danube River cruises: Viking River Cruises: Viking is a well-known and popular cruise line that offers a variety of Danube River cruise itineraries. They are known for their comfortable ships, cultural enrichment programs and included shore excursions. AmaWaterways: AmaWaterways is another highly regarded cruise line with a strong presence on the Danube. They are known for their exceptional cuisine, wine-themed cruises, and active shore excursions. Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection: Uniworld offers luxurious river cruises on the Danube with beautifully designed ships, gourmet dining, and unique excursions. They are known for their attention to detail and personalized service. Scenic Cruises: Scenic offers all-inclusive luxury Danube River cruises. They provide spacious suites, top-notch dining and a wide range of onshore activities. Scenic also includes drinks excursions and gratuities in their fares. Crystal River Cruises: Crystal offers upscale Danube River cruises with all-suite ships, gourmet dining, and a focus on cultural enrichment. They provide a high level of service and luxury amenities. Emerald Waterways: Emerald Waterways offers affordable Danube River cruises with a good balance of inclusions and optional activities. They are known for their modern ships and innovative onshore experiences. Tauck River Cruises: Tauck offers high-end Danube River cruises with a focus on cultural immersion. They include guided excursions, fine dining, and exclusive experiences. Avalon Waterways: Avalon offers a wide range of Danube River itineraries with a focus on panoramic views. Their ships feature open-air balconies, and they offer a variety of optional excursions.

There are several particularly scenic sections of the Danube River that are often considered among the most beautiful: Wachau Valley, Austria: The Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is often regarded as one of the most picturesque stretches of the Danube. This region is characterized by terraced vineyards, charming towns like Dürnstein and Melk, and historic castles, including Melk Abbey. The scenery here is a captivating blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Iron Gates, Serbia, and Romania: The Iron Gates is a dramatic gorge section of the Danube River, where the river cuts through the Carpathian Mountains. The towering cliffs, lush forests and the passage through the narrow gorge create a breathtaking landscape. Upper Bavaria, Germany: The Bavarian section of the Danube, particularly between Regensburg and Passau, is known for its idyllic countryside, charming villages, and well-preserved medieval architecture. The riverbanks are dotted with picturesque castles and churches. The Danube Bend, Hungary: Near Budapest, the Danube River takes a sharp turn known as the Danube Bend (Dunakanyar in Hungarian). This scenic region offers panoramic views from the hills overlooking the river and features historic towns like Visegrád, Esztergom, and Szentendre. Wachau and Kamptal, Austria: In addition to the Wachau Valley, Austria’s Kamptal region is also renowned for its beauty. This area is known for its vineyards, charming villages, and the confluence of the Kamp and Danube Rivers. Balkan Nature Reserves, Bulgaria: The Bulgarian section of the Danube River is home to several protected nature reserves, such as the Srebarna Nature Reserve and the Danube Islands, where you can experience the beauty of unspoiled wetlands and birdwatching opportunities. Danube Delta, Romania: The Danube Delta, where the river meets the Black Sea is a unique and biodiverse ecosystem. It is a paradise for nature lovers, with its labyrinthine waterways, reedbeds and diverse wildlife.

Here is a breakdown of the pros and cons of different months: Spring (April to May): Pros: Spring is a lovely time for cruising with milder weather, blooming flowers, and fewer crowds compared to the summer months. The landscapes along the way are lush and vibrant. Cons: There may still be some cooler and rainy days, and water levels can vary in the spring, potentially affecting the cruise itinerary. Early Summer (June): Pros: June offers longer daylight hours and pleasant weather, making it an excellent time for outdoor activities and sightseeing. Cons: It can be a bit more crowded as summer tourism starts to pick up, and prices may be higher. Mid-Summer (July to August): Pros: The weather is warm and sunny and everything is in full bloom. You will have plenty of daylight for exploration and a festive atmosphere in many towns and cities. Cons: It’s the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices. Some areas may experience hot weather. Early Fall (September): Pros: September is a popular choice for river cruising. The weather is still pleasant and you can enjoy the changing foliage along the way. It is also harvest season in wine regions. Cons: Prices may remain relatively high and popular ports can still be busy. Late Fall (October): Pros: Late fall offers crisp and cool weather perfect for exploring without the summer crowds. You can also enjoy the beautiful fall foliage. Cons: Some attractions may close for the season and the weather can be more unpredictable. Winter (November to December): Pros: Winter river cruises offer a unique and festive experience, with Christmas markets in full swing in cities along the route. Prices are often lower during this season. Cons: The weather is cold and days are shorter. Some attractions may be closed, and outdoor activities may be limited.

Here is a breakdown of the common durations for different types of dinner cruises: 1.5 to 2 Hours: Many standard Budapest dinner cruises that include a 2- or 3-course meal with drinks and live entertainment typically last around 1.5 to 2 hours. These cruises offer a relaxed dining experience while enjoying the scenic views of Budapest along the Danube River. 2.5 to 3 Hours: Some dinner cruises in Budapest those that offer a more extensive dining experience with multiple courses and wine pairings, can last between 2.5 to 3 hours. These cruises provide a more leisurely and upscale dining experience. Specialty Cruises: Specialty dinner cruises in Budapest, such as wine-tasting cruises or themed cruises with unique entertainment, may have varying durations depending on the specific program. These can range from 1.5 to 3 hours or longer depending on the activities and inclusions.

Budapest, Hungary - Twin Cities on the Danube River

Buda and Pest Are Fascinating Cities with Intriguing History

The Danube River runs right through the center of Budapest, dividing the city into two parts--Buda and Pest. Since the city links western and eastern Europe, Budapest has long had an intriguing history. River ships sailing the Danube always stopover in Budapest for the day, docking in a perfect place, with a marvelous view of Fishermen's Bastion and the Palace in Buda on one side and the downtown area of Pest on the other. The ships often wait until after dark to sail away since the city lights on the river are truly memorable.

Budapest has many fascinating sites on both sides of the river. Many of these sites are diverse, with fascinating histories. They range from churches such as St. Stephen's and Matthias to monuments, parks, and beautiful bridges across the Danube.

Since the ships dock conveniently near many of the tourist areas, passengers can explore the city on their own. In addition, river cruises usually include an overview tour of the city as part of the fare.

Budapest is also one of my favorite sail away ports in the world.

Budapest River Cruises

The Christmas season adds another layer of beauty to the already romantic charms of Budapest. Nestled in the heart of Pest lies Vörösmarty Square, home to the city’s largest yuletide market. The enticing aroma of national specialties permeates the air as vendors display traditional and contemporary handicrafts. At the cozy St. Stephen’s Basilica market, mulled wine keeps revelers warm as nightly light shows illuminate the church’s facade. Across the Danube in Buda, Old-World allure mingles with festivities in Fő Square, where seasonal events and an outdoor ice rink entertain.

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. You are not required to obtain a visa to enter any of the countries visited for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact the consulates or embassies  of Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania to determine what travel documentation is required.

International maritime security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied. Once you board the riverboat, your passport will be held by the purser temporarily to make copies.

Please Note: Longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note Regarding Crossing Borders between non-Schengen Countries: In order to clear customs at the non-Schengen ports, the Reception staff will take your passport during the cruise in order to show local authorities as we pass borders. The process is quick and efficient and there is no need for declarations, etc.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Your riverboat is registered in Basel, Switzerland. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour. Please refer to the Tauck Travel Protection section above for further details of the coverage we offer.

The water on board the ship is potable, and complimentary bottled water is placed in your cabin each day. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. , no other vaccinations are currently required for travel to Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania or Bulgaria. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country ,  please contact an embassy or consulate of Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria to determine whether additional vaccinations are required for your travel.

While a cruise from Budapest to the Black Sea is very relaxing and the pace leisurely, to enjoy this cruise, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. There is a moderate to significant amount of walking during our excursions, often along cobblestone streets, and at many sites there are multiple stairs or steps; for the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion.

Your riverboat has four decks: Sun, Diamond, Ruby and Emerald. On the ms Joy and ms Savor, the elevator runs between the Diamond Deck and the Emerald Deck. Please note on there is no elevator to the Emerald Deck on the ms Esprit and ms Treasures. There is no chair lift between any of the decks.

Because you will be cruising on a river and not on the open sea, you are never far from land and, therefore, there is no doctor on board. In case of emergency we can easily dock the boat and call for an ambulance or medical assistance.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate service animals on any river cruise for medical and legal reasons.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

On board the riverboat, smoking is permitted in a limited area of the Sun deck. Smoking (including e-Cigarettes) is not permitted in any cabin, the restaurant, the lounge or any other interior space.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The climate along the Danube River changes from temperate to continental to maritime as you cruise eastward. Budapest experiences long, sunny summers that are warm and humid. Bucharest experiences hot and dry summers with moderate humidity. The Black Sea coast is similar in climate to the Mediterranean with moderating breezes off the water. From June through August, the average high temperatures increase slightly as you travel east along the river until you reach the Black Sea and range from 72 to 83°F (22 to 28°C). The average low temperatures range from 57 to 64°F (14 to 18°C). Rainfall amounts in this region remain fairly constant throughout the year, although late spring and early summer are generally the wettest seasons of the year. Conversely, as temperatures rise, rainfall decreases as you reach the Black Sea.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is flexible and allows for layering. Casual, cotton clothing is always advisable. A light jacket or sweater for the sun deck is also recommended. Pack comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in, as many of the sites visited were built centuries ago and have uneven surfaces, some steep inclines and many steps.

During evenings aboard the riverboat, dress is resort casual.  Items such as slacks and collared shirts are appropriate for men.  For women, slacks, a dress or a skirt and blouse are suitable.  For dinner and throughout the evening, guests should refrain from wearing shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops or sneakers.  Your journey also includes one or two special occasion dinners, where a sport coat and tie for gentlemen and a dress/pantsuit for ladies are suggested.  (Your Tauck Director will advise you prior to those evenings.)

Bathrobes, slippers and hairdryers are provided in each guest room at the hotels and in each cabin on board the riverboat.

Valet laundry service is available at the hotels and on the riverboat for a fee. There is no valet dry cleaning available on the riverboat. Ironing facilities on the riverboat are available by request to the front desk. Category 7 cabins feature their own irons and ironing boards.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the riverboat.

We recommend you pack the following items for your cruise on the Danube:

  • Flat, rubber-soled walking shoes for onboard
  • Sturdy but comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in for onshore
  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your ship cabin while traveling

Experience the Danube from Budapest to Bucharest on a Viking river cruise

Simon Wilson

Simon Wilson

The rock sculpture of Decebalus Statue on the Danube river, near the Iron Gates and the city of Orșova, in Mehedinți County, Romania.

Simon Wilson boards a Viking river cruise exploring Eastern Europe and finds it etched with more history than we, perhaps, give the region credit for

In Hungary, they tell you they’ve spent 1000 years surviving every invader, from Genghis Khan to the Soviet Union. In Croatia, they show you how, with trucks turned into tanks, they fought off the brutal Serbian invasion until they couldn’t any longer, in the Balkan wars of the 1990s.

In Bulgaria, they honour 500 years of resistance to Ottoman rule. And long before that, to the Romans. In Romania, they mock the tyrant Nicolae Ceaușescu and his wife Elena, executed by firing squad on Christmas Day just 35 years ago.

You hear all this and you think, we have our own rich history. But it is a very short rich history. In Eastern Europe, cruising the Danube south from Budapest and then east, each day is a new chapter in a very long rich history, complete with towering Roman fortresses, dusky town squares and the cave churches and cathedrals of the Orthodox faith, where the artistic and religious treasures of centuries are displayed and have so often been hidden for safekeeping. It is, by turns, sobering and sublime.

One evening you glide silently up to the Iron Gates, sheer cliffs all around. Just over there is the astonishing 55m-tall head of the Dacian King Decebalus, carved from the hillside. He withstood the Romans 2000 years ago, although the statue is only 20 years old.

There are hydro dams with giant locks that take you down and down, and as you stand with your umbrella in the rain, you can’t stop thinking: Jason and the Argonauts came here.

A Viking river cruise ship on the Danube in Budapest, Hungary.

I love a good river cruise. It’s not just that you visit a different place every day but return to the same hotel room every night – although the benefits of that do begin to seem magical. No daily packing, no twiddling your thumbs in transit, and every day the delights of starting afresh.

In general, mornings involve a half-day tour for everyone who wants to go, usually by bus with some time for walking around and a guided visit to a major public attraction. Then in the afternoon and the evening, there are smaller, optional tours and visits: galleries, a biking or hiking trip, boutique concerts, home visits, archaeological expeditions, cooking classes, night-life excursions, botanical tours.

When there are just a couple of hundred passengers on your boat, the crew give you a boutique experience. Everyone gets to know the tour manager, or at least has a pretty good sense that they do. On the optional trips your group might be small enough to fit in a single minibus.

The suites are comfortable and roomy, with the external wall all windows, and the travel itself is peaceful. If you’ve booked a verandah room, you can sit outside, in private, right by the water as you slide into the evening.

Book a verandah stateroom and sit outside, in private, right by the water. Photo / Supplied

Or you can sit up on the roof, which is kitted out as a long terrace, with deckchairs, tables and sunshades, a walking track and outdoor games.

Most of the passengers were American. It’s fascinating, being among Americans right now. A few were pro-Trump, but reluctant to talk about it. Most were against. Possibly, one told me, because Viking the tour company, had done a lot of advertising on the relatively liberal PBS radio and TV.

One 89-year-old man from North Carolina talked to me one night about his fears for his country, and I realised he was crying.

You can make good friendships on a river cruise. And another thing: your ship will fit right in. It won’t tower over every town it visits, it won’t discharge thousands of passengers into choked city streets, it won’t burn large quantities of heavy fuel oil. The Viking ships are electric.

You dock quietly and gently, and you get to visit small and very wonderful places that couldn’t cope if there were 10 times as many of you.

And you’re on a great, wide, endlessly drifting river!

Jason and the Argonauts is a tale from before the fall of Troy. History flows through everything, not with a castle around every corner, as in Western Europe, but in town after town where they’ve suffered conquest after conquest and learned to survive.

And in the ruins and the regeneration, in the gilded icons and other treasures they kept safe, in the mountains and forests and on that wide river, it’s often very beautiful.

The Parliament in Budapest.

Budapest and Bucharest are the bookends to this trip. Hungary to Romania, with Croatia, Serbia and Bulgaria in between.

The Hungarian capital is a large city split in two by the river. The western Buda side features a long hill arrayed with castles, towers, churches and battlements. Pest, flat and to the east, is the commercial centre and also home to the enormous Parliament building.

Officially it’s a monument to the people, but really it was built by a small but very determined bourgeoisie with a point to prove. They wanted the old aristocracy to know they were the new life force of the country.

So they built a neo-gothic Parliament as impressive as Westminster, “inaugurating” it in 1896, the year Hungarians say marks the country’s 1000th anniversary. Across town in Heroes’ Square, the founding moment in 896 is commemorated with seven bronze statues of Magyar chieftains on horseback. They’re arranged around a tall column, topped by the archangel Gabriel, wings up, holy crown and double-barred cross of St Stephen, the first king, held high.

Hungarians seem extremely fond of their mythic heroes: the city is full of statues of them.

There’s much else to see and do, although our highlight wasn’t organised at all. We were browsing the shops when the sky filled suddenly with seething clouds and lightning flashes and the rain came thundering down. We ran for the nearest restaurant and ate the rest of the afternoon away with bowls of a glorious goulash and a bottle of local wine that wasn’t bulls’ blood.

Southwards beyond Pest, the Great Hungarian Plain rolls on forever. It’s flat, fertile and indefensible, and served as a highway into Europe for every invading army.

The theme repeats, over and over: resistance, conquest and occupation. On an excursion in Croatia, we visit Mandar, an elderly woman whose village was evacuated when the Serbs arrived in 1991. We eat her cakes and drink her plum brandy and she tells us the Serbs who occupied the village took everything valuable when they left – the doors, the window frames, the wiring ripped from the wall.

Some of them had been Serbian Croats already living there – her neighbours, her friends – before war broke out.

Later, in Serbia, we wander through the mighty fortress of Golubac, built in the 14th century on the site of old Roman and Byzantine settlements. They strung an iron chain from the fortress right across the river, to facilitate the collection of a kind of goods and services tax.

The restored 14th-century Golubac fortress, on the Danube in Serbia.

But Golubac wasn’t mighty enough and for 500 years Serbia lost control of it, first to the Turks and then to Bulgarians, Hungarians and finally Austrians.

Restoration of the 10 tall towers is well underway and there’s a fabulous collection of weaponry, jewellery and more on display, along with some captivating video histories. They even have concerts there.

In Bulgaria, we take a bus trip to Belogradchik, where the Romans built their barracks around the site of massive vertical rock formations. Our guide Benni reels off some of the shapes locals can see in these fingers pointing at the sky: a monk, a horseman, the Madonna, a schoolgirl, a bear, Adam and Eve, a wedding procession, a cuckoo, a camel, there are so many.

Rock formations and a Roman fortress at Belogradchik, in Bulgaria.

On the way, we pass abandoned factories, always with graffiti and broken glass, sometimes burnt out, the weeds growing high but the buildings not pulled down. The owners are absent, or they’re not owned at all, and the authorities do not have the money for repairs or even demolition. Or perhaps they have been kept as monuments to folly.

Benni is grumpy about this. She tells us everyone in Bulgaria is grumpy. The leaders who did so much damage under communism have never been held properly to account; many of them have prospered again. She says what most of our guides say: You are very welcome in our country and we want you to know the truth.

Sometimes the history reaches even further back. Lepenski Vir is a Serbian archaeological site overlooking the river, near the Iron Gates. When the hydro scheme was announced, archaeologists protested: the site was already known to be valuable. They were given the two years of the first dam’s construction period to find and save what they could.

You can buy little replicas of the result: hundreds of ceramic heads, human but with fish mouths. They also found the intact floor pans of huts, all identically formed, with the floors themselves made from smooth ferrous rock set around a fire pit. The rock would have transmitted warmth from the fires, giving these huts underfloor heating.

They were at least 1500 years old. The archaeologists dug deeper, and found another layer, with the remains of more huts, with the same floor pans. And deeper again, and again. By the time they had to stop, they’d gone back almost 10,000 years, and in every age the people lived in huts with identical floors.

The whole site was then carefully dug up and removed, and you can see it all laid out in layers now, safely preserved inside a glassed-in enclosure.

The Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest, Romania: the heaviest administrative building in the world.

In Bucharest, they have a Parliament even larger than Budapest’s, although it’s more recent and no monument to democracy. The Ceaușescus built it in the style of neo-classical socialist realism, better known as brutalist Stalinism, and it has the dubious distinction of being the heaviest administrative building in the world.

The Ceaușescus’ own residence is also a palace, although more domestically scaled. The building and its rooms are elegantly proportioned but opulently filled, with marble, parquet, tapestries, gold fittings and gold paint everywhere you look. There’s even an indoor swimming pool with frescoes on every surface. It’s as if the Roman Empire had been restored to life, and then, Vesuvius-like, snuffed out again.

Swimming pool with frescoes in the Ceausescu Palace in Bucharest, Romania.

History and an emerging modern life: they jostle for attention all along the eastern stretches of the Danube, while the river runs impassively through it all. The people welcome you, tell you their stories, show you their treasures, and you come away feeling deeply rewarded.

In Belgrade, the Serbian capital, the main street has been fully pedestrianised, like the main streets of almost every city and town we visited, and in the late morning, the old buildings and the street itself were alive with shoppers.

Pedestrianised street in Belgrade, Serbia.

At the bottom of that street, we came across what might just be my favourite homage to the great depths of time. There’s a Roman castle, some of its stone walls crumbling venerably, others lovingly restored. And beneath those walls, in an area that was once a moat, there’s a children’s park filled with dinosaurs. How’s that for history.

These 3 Classic Forms of Travel Will Dominate in 2024

Venice. Budapest. Nairobi.

The names set a hook: circles inked on a map, fingers tapped on a drawing room globe, stickers layered on a valise. We set off from here. We head there—to a great city, up a grand river, into the African wild. We plan and thrill at what’s to come. A journey that echoes of historic provenance and links us with travelers of the past but that seizes us by the collar amid the high-velocity hurly-burly of 21st-century life and says: Slow down. Regard. Savor.

These are grand journeys—these are the Great Journeys. But can something distinctly old resonate as powerfully today? Can we find the slow gear and inhabit the deeper beauty of such travel? With the murmurs of diarists and explorers in my ear, I set out on three Great Journeys to test the theory: Paris-bound aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express (VSOE); cruising the snow-flecked Danube to Christmas markets in Hungary and Austria, Germany and Slovakia; and flying into the Kenyan bush for a week on safari. What did I discover? Where do I begin?

"How do you find your cabin?”

My steward, Melissa, flicks her glance warmly at me while never losing track of the Veuve Clicquot she’s pouring. I’m dumbstruck—by her crisp posture amid the gentle shudder of our train car as it lumbers across the watery landscape outside Venice but also by the wild under-statement of the question

Simply put: My cabin is gorgeous. All I can manage is to blurt in clumsy French that I want to live here forever—but we both know that in less than 24 hours I’m going to step onto the platform of the Gare de l’Est and my life on the Orient Express will be over.

But what a cabin to inhabit until then. A jewelry box to human scale, this triumph of restoration and imagination is one of eight Suites installed in a pair of circa 1920s and 1930s cars that joined the VSOE this summer. The Suites are a new category between the train’s Historic Cabins and their haute-opulent cousins, six Grand Suites with full or twin beds, sofas, dining tables, and full baths.

The new Suites lie literally between the categories. Each has a commodious banquette and table—a setup that converts to a double bed (or two twins) with crisp white sheets—and an en suite bath. Rachel Johnson of London’s Wimberly Interiorsconjured the four distinct designs, each inspired by the train’s Art Deco heritage and the landscape we traverse (mine is La Forêt, the forest) and rich in French marquetry, ArtNouveau–style textiles, hand-blown and-etched glass fixtures, brass hardware, and a marble bath that would charm an aristocrat.

It’s enough to pass an entire day in this intimate Arcadia, but three dining cars beckon with their ebullient patterns and palettes, ample velvet and tassels. It’s said one can never overdress for dinner on the Orient Express, and jolly travelers oblige, with some in fully formal attire, others in thoughtful semiformal dress. The service brandishes lots of Champagne, while the rhythm of cocktail shakers and standards at the grand piano in the famed Bar Car “3674” sing a post-prandial siren song.

And this—brilliantly—is the sum of life aboard the Orient Express. It’s a journey of jostled, colorful mini journeys from my cabin down hallways so narrow they require side-ways slides, smiles, and nods; luxuriating at meals; chatting and laughing in the bar; and repeating with the cadence of lunch, dinner, nightcap, midnight brunch, and breakfast in my cabin as Paris looms to the west.

My only duty, really, is to discover I can roll down my window to let the cool Alpine air refresh my cabin, then lean my head out and spy my train’s gorgeous curves as it rounds bends north through Italy and Austria, then turns west across Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

To count cows and chalets, to wonder at the world sliding past. To look down at a book, to feel the soothing conversation of old wheels with stalwart rails. And to pause at border stops to step down to the platform, examine the navy shine of our cars with the gold letters telling the world who we are, and catch the curiosity of passersby. We lucky overnighters.

Here's to you, Maria Theresa, I think, lifting my steaming mug of glühwein in tribute.

It’s the perfect place to toast the 18th-century empress: I stomp my boots against the frost-glazed forecourt facing Schönbrunn, Vienna’s Baroque masterpiece that was her favorite palace, and take in the glimmering goodwill of the market stalls that surround me.

With mulled wine in hand, I’ve spent an hour in besotted stroll among vendors offering the bounty we imagine the idealized European Christmas market would contain: gifts and decorations made from blown glass, carved wood, pottery, needlework, even dried fruit—where plastic or paper cups seem never to have existed (all glühwein comes in decorative ceramic mugs, to keep as souvenirs or return for a small refund).

Despite the December chill the market is rich with aroma—roasted nuts, waffles, and crepes, with top notes of cloves, cinnamon, and citrus. Crimson-cheeked schoolchildren roam in excited packs, queuing up for chocolates. Crystal lights wink overhead, and I swear I hear classical music. Perhaps from the palace, perhaps in my head. It doesn’t matter, because this journey—up Europe’s Danube River—occupies that gently liminal geography between history and dream.

The empress is with me for the entire week—not just this Viennese afternoon. My journey is aboard the SS Maria Theresa, a cruise ship designed to honor her historic empire along the river. (And reign she does, overlooking the lobby’s marble double staircase from a massive 18th-century portrait.)

Fittingly Uniworld’s interior designer Toni Tollman has created the closest thing to a Habsburg palace on the water: My stateroom’s walls are covered in fabric; my bed canopied; my bathroom lined in marble. Antiques and artwork from the period keep company with gilded reproductions; in the resplendent lounge and bar, five murals by decorative artists at London’s Croxford and Saunders wrap the scene in Austrian rurals.

It would already be a Great Journey to ply this historic artery through Europe as we do, linking centers of art, politics, and culture. From Budapest we sail overnight into Slovakia and Bratislava, which, although rich with Gothic, Baroque, and Art Deco architecture, feels like a new European discovery after its years hidden away under Soviet rule.

Gliding through Austria we tour the museums and walk the grand boulevards of Vienna, meander and marvel at the sky blue Baroque tower in the riverfront village of Dürnstein, and leave our ship for the day to drive up to cinematic Salzburg. Finally, we cross the German border and to Passau, another startling discovery of Baroque and Rococo architecture both church-like and civil. Each day we tread nimbly down our gang-plank into each world to feel the overlapping sunbeams—and shadows—of empire.

And of course, at this time of year, the journey takes on the additional patina of the Christmas markets, each speaking its own dialect of history, food, and crafts. From honey wine in Bratislava to spun sugar in Passau, I taste (and try to pronounce) something new every day. I collect a few glühwein mugs. And I thank, again, Maria Theresa for her imperial inspiration and for the water that ties this world together.

Today is a day for elephants.

We can feel them out there, roaming the Kenyan grasslands; it’s just a question of finding them. We joke that the only elephant we’ve seen so far has been on our bottle of Amarula, the creamy African liqueur that plays a sweet role in our sundown ritual. But today, my safari-mates and I assure one another, climbing into our Land Cruiser, is a day for elephants.

This is the optimism of the adventurer, and a safari of any length, anywhere, hands you the chance to occupy that exotic position. But it’s a double down to anchor that safari at Mahali Mzuri, the luxury tented camp created by Sir Richard Branson’sVirgin Limited Edition. For one, the camp leaps forward in design, leaving the traditional silhouettes (and colonial aftertaste) of pale canvas tents behind for swooping shelters inspired by the bows carried by Maasai hunters. Secondly, Branson chose land adjacent to Kenya’s famed Maasai Mara reserve (where so many safari operators go) and helped steer it, with other partners and Maasai people, into conservancy.

So we spend a week here in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, sometimes in pursuit of spotting the fauna famed for this part of East Africa—lions, cheetahs, leopards, Cape buffalo, antelope, giraffes, warthogs, hyenas, jackals, and yes, elephants—but other times in conversations with Mahali Mzuri’s partners at a nearby school, with elders who work to manage cattle movement to ease the burden on the habitat, and with leaders of a handicraft collaborative offering financial independence to local women. After so many years of tourism taking from Kenya’s ecosystem and cultural currency, this approach to parity and partnership with people and animals and habitat feels like a new form of an adventurer’s optimism.

In other words, it might be enough to bounce merrily along river valleys and across ancient volcanic plains, seeking encounters with these astonishing members of the animal kingdom, pausing for bush picnics, and gathering after dark below the spread of a baobab for a campfire, songs, and dancing. But it’s far more to know that my Great Journey into the African bush treads lighter and joins a forward-looking relationship with this fragile global treasure.

And then, one brilliant late morning under the Kenyan sun, we find our elephants. It’s a threesome: a newly born calf, trotting gamely to keep up with its older sibling, then nuzzling the rear leg of its mother, who gracefully allows her baby back into the family’s rhythm.

I watch from the quiet of our SUV, as I had watched from my ship pulling into a historic port, as I’d watched from the cabin of my train, and think yet again: This is the gift of the Great Journey. An opportunity to be small, to observe, to be led. To be slow. To be taught. To draw memories close to the chest, and to dream of the next great chance. To spin the globe and let the globe spin us.
