Roatán Cruise Port

Roatan Cruise Center

There are two cruise ports located on the island of Roatán.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

Carnival Cruise Line built this port/cruise center, which can accommodate two mega-ships. Carnival cruise ships dock here, along with Princess and Holland America cruise lines.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is a gigantic 20-acre welcome center with a “private” beach. Many cruisers will spend the day within the Cruise Center visiting the restaurants, bars, duty-free shops, craft markets, or just relaxing on the beach.

The Port of Roatán (Also Known as Coxen Hole)

This port can accommodate three cruise ships at a time. Ships from all of the other cruise lines (besides those mentioned above) typically dock here.

This port is within walking distance of Roatán island’s largest city, Coxen Hole. The port terminal has restrooms, taxi stands, tour and excursion pick-ups, and an ATM.

What Cruise Passengers Need to Know About Roatán Cruise Port

Roatan

Roatán’s official currency is the Honduran lempira (HNL). However, cash (including USD!) reigns supreme here. You can pay with U.S. Dollars on Roatán, just expect to get change back in lempiras.

The official language in Roatán is Spanish, but English (with a Creole twist) is widely spoken.

The time zone in Roatán, Honduras, is Central Standard Time, which is one hour ahead of the Eastern time zone.

Roatán is an island in Central America located just off the Honduras coast. Its climate is tropical rainforest, with temperatures hovering in the 80-degree Fahrenheit range year-round.

Mid-July through October is considered the “warm season,” with temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s. Roatán is very humid year-round, with humidity reaching 90% in the last four months of the year.

The rainy season in Roatán is from September through July.

Getting Around Roatán

The island of Roatán is 48 miles long and 5 miles wide at its widest point. It is safest to book tours (whether private or cruise ship excursions) to get around Roatán.

Whether you port in Mahogany Bay Cruise Center or Coxen Bay, activities are within walking distance. The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is a 20-acre complex with a beach, restaurants, bars, and shopping areas.

Coxen Hole is Roatán’s largest city. Activities and amenities, including shopping, restaurants, and bars, are within walking distance of the port.

Public Transit

There are many taxis and buses available for transport in Roatán. The “buses” are typically 16-passenger vans running regular routes between Coxen Hole and West End or French Harbour.

Taxis can be private “privado,” which costs a little more, or “colectivo,” which means you might pick up and drop off other people along your route. This is a fun way to chat with locals but might take a little longer to get to and from your destination.

Car Rentals

Car rentals are available on Roatán, with rental kiosks near the cruise terminal. The island is easy to navigate, just watch for horses and cows on the road.

The Best Roatán Shore Excursions

Roatan shore excursions

Roatán has a different vibe than other Caribbean cruise ports . This Honduran island has a Central American influence with a Caribbean twist.

Roatán is situated on top of exposed ancient coral reefs, and just off-shore is the second largest reef system in the world: the Mesoamerican Reef System, also known as the Great Mayan Reef.

The diverse culture and unique natural wonders of Roatán make for a one-of-a-kind cruise port experience. Here are 22 of the best Roatán Shore Excursions.

1. Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

Carnival designed this 20-acre port complex to be an excursion in itself. The 800-foot-long white sand Mahogany Beach is part of the Cruise Center. You can get off the ship and spend the day reading on a beach chair or swimming in the crystal clear waters.

This beach gets busier and louder as the day goes on, so grab your chair early or choose a different beach if you are looking for quiet. The Cruise Center has a mix of duty-free shops and retailers, including Diamonds International, Del Sol, and Piranha Joes.

If you are hungry, there are several restaurants in the Cruise Center. Stop by Fat Tuesday’s atop Monkey Hill for amazing views, some Caribbean Jerk chicken, and a cold and refreshing “Banana Banshee” Daquiri.

2. Magical Flying Beach Chair

This is a fun experience that is unique to Roatán. Immediately after disembarking at Mahogany Bay Port, there is a chairlift that you can take to transport you to nearby Mahogany Bay Beach.

You’ll find the Magical Flying Beach Chair up the hill and to the right of the Cruise Center. You can purchase an “all-day pass” for unlimited use.

Be aware that the Flying Beach Chair frequently stops for people to get on and off. The chance to see iguanas in the trees and the magnificent ocean view make this a pleasant option.

3. Shop ‘Til you Drop at The Town Center Coxen Bay

Roatan cruise port shopping

There is a fantastic variety of duty-free boutiques and local souvenir shops in The Town Center shopping area at the Port of Roatán.

Be sure to stop at “Yaba Ding Ding” for local handmade arts and crafts, including Garifuna and Lenca pottery artwork. If you love photography, you’ll marvel at the underwater photos by Roatán local Shawn Jackson in his gallery here.

4. Snorkel, Scuba, and Relax at West Bay Beach

The world’s second-longest reef system, the Mesoamerican Reef, lies just off the coast of West Bay Beach. This beach is 30-45 minutes from the cruise ship docks and has some of the best snorkeling and diving in Roatán.

The beach is public and free to enter. However, paying a nearby resort for their day-use fee gives you access to chairs and a break from the vendors trying to sell their goods and services.

If you want to snorkel or scuba, water taxis from West Bay Beach will take you closer to the reef.

5. Cuddle a Sloth at an Animal Sanctuary

Roatan sloth

Several animal sanctuaries exist in Roatán. These excursions typically include the opportunity to hold a sloth, feed monkeys, and interact with parrots and macaws.

You can book a private tour, which is a little more expensive but allows you to move through the animal sanctuary (and have the experiences!) more quickly. This experience takes around an hour, so it is a good one to bundle with other excursions.

6. Spend the Day at The Little French Key

This resort is a one-stop excursion spot. You can pay a fee to participate in activities like horseback riding, swimming with pigs, massages, manicures, snorkeling and scuba diving, kayaking, rope swings, and a gift shop. They also have a mini zoo where they can interact with animals.

Look for the VIP pass, which includes drink vouchers, a lunch plate, a massage, horseback riding, and access to a less-crowded beach. Little French Key is a 30-minute drive from the port.

7. Taste the Unique Flavor of Wild Honduran Chocolate at a Chocolate Factory

Roatan Chocolate Experience

Cacao beans in Honduras are unique because they are grown in the wild instead of on plantations. Several chocolate factories can be visited to try this tasty treat.

Factory tours are usually a part of a “bundled” excursion. If you are a chocolate lover, this is a “must” for treats and souvenir shopping in Roatán.

8. Scuba Dive at the Mayan Reef

You don’t want to miss the opportunity to scuba dive in the second-largest reef system in the world: the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Scuba diving is one of the top things cruisers recommend for porting here. Roatán has excursions available for every level of diver, from beginner to scuba-certified.

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is home to diverse sea life, including colorful fish, coral, sea turtles, eels, stingrays, sponges, starfish, shrimps, and lobster. Most Scuba excursions take place on the West Side, nearest the reef, and will take several hours.

There are many dive shops in Roatán. You can book a beginner scuba excursion, where you learn scuba basics in the safety of a pool and then venture to the reef. Many boutique diving excursions will allow you to use your scuba certifications for magnificent dives in the deep.

9. See the Island’s Diversity while Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is a relaxing way to escape the crowds and see the diversity of this beautiful island.

There are many different types of rides available, from beach horseback riding to mountain trails. Some excursions offer a combo that includes a ride through local villages, up into the mountains, and even a ride along the beach.

10. Bike Around an Island on Hydrobikes

If you are looking for an out-of-the-ordinary water sports experience, hydrobiking is an exciting choice. Hydrobikes have pedals like a traditional bicycle, but are on floats so you glide on top of the ocean.

Your guide will take you on a tour around a private island near French Key. Hydrobikes are easy for all skill levels and are an active way to spend a few hours in Roatán. Just be sure to put on plenty of sunscreen.

11. Eat and Beach at Ginger’s on Half Moon Bay

Half-Moon Bay is located on the West End of Roatán. It is an exceptional beach for swimming and snorkeling, and the location of a delicious Caribbean Grill called Ginger’s.

You can use the beach chairs at Ginger’s if you order food OR just come for the delicious fresh seafood. Catch a game on the TV and order coconut shrimp and a frozen mojito.

12. Cruise Through the Mangroves

Located on the East End of Roatán, this excursion includes transportation to Oakridge’s traditional Caribbean fishing village. The town is an interesting visit, with buildings constructed on stilts over the water and fishing boats bobbing in the bay.

In Oakridge, you’ll board an authentic cayuco (a small motorized canoe), and travel with a guide through a canal dug out in the mangroves many years ago to connect the harbors and bays. Parts of the tunnel are barely wide enough for the boats to get through.

The land in mangrove forests provides shelter for migratory birds and monkeys, so there is a good chance to see (and hear) unique Roatán wildlife.

13. Spot Sea Turtles Underwater and On Land

If you love sea turtles, Roatán is an outstanding place to see them in their natural habitat. This island has three types of sea turtles: Hawksbill, Green, and Loggerhead Turtles.

The best time to see sea turtles on land is during their nesting period from July to August, when they come ashore to nest on West Bay Beach and Paya Bay Beach. If you are in Roatán during the non-nesting months, you can also observe these beautiful sea creatures gliding in the crystal-clear waters.

Dive and snorkel excursions are available that will take you to spots where sea turtles frequent. Typically, they are on the West End.

14. Take a Historical Dune Buggy Tour to Punta Gorda

This half-day excursion will take you on an adventure up to the North Shore and the historic fishing village of Punta Gorda. Drivers need to be 16 years or older and have a driver’s license.

Follow a tour guide on an adventurous dune buggy drive to the Punta Gorda community. Once you’ve arrived, enjoy a dance and music show by the Garinagu (Garifuna), natives of Roatán.

Afterwards, you can purchase lunch from nearby restaurants, including Garifuna favorites like Machuca, a delicious mash of green and sweet plantains rolled into bites and dunked into tasty soups.

15. Monkey Around at Gumbalimba Park

This 20-acre beachfront adventure park offers many options for adventure seekers. Your tour guide will teach you about the history of the island of Roatán and its people while you hike around and observe animals, including monkeys and macaws, roaming in their natural environment.

After you’ve met the monkeys, you can get a monkey’ s-eye view of the park’s Trail Canopy Tour. You’ll zipline between 17 cable platforms extending from 120 to 500 feet in length.

Gumbalina also has water activities, including kayaking and going to the beach.

16. See Fish Without Getting Wet on a Glass Bottom Boat Ride

Glass bottom boats depart regularly from the beach at West Bay on Roatán. If you cannot snorkel or scuba but want to see the wonders of the reef, this is a fantastic way to do it.

These boats have windows that are underwater in a “semi-submarine” experience. Choose a glass-bottom boat ride if you want to witness the gorgeous marine life in Roatán without the hassle of sand and sunburns.

17. Underwater Scooter like a BOSS

If you want a unique scuba-like experience without the certification, you can book a BOSS (Breathing Observation Submersible Scooter) excursion. Your adventure will start with a catamaran ride out to the reef. Once you arrive, you’ll have the option to use snorkel equipment or try out the BOSS.

The BOSS submersible electric scooter has an oxygen-filled breathing helmet attached. You’ll be able to breathe freely while you scooter around 8 feet below the water surface, viewing the colorful marine life in Roatán.

18. Learn About Local Flora at the Carambola Botanical Garden

The 40-acre botanical garden is home to a variety of beautiful plants, including orchids, fruit and nut trees, flowering plants, medicinal plants, the world-famous Honduran mahogany tree, and the popular “Chocolate Tree.”

The botanical gardens can be visited as a self-guided tour, or for more money, you can have an informational guided tour by the founder of the garden. Plan on walking along the jungle paths for anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

19. Snorkel Right-off Tabyana Beach

The reef is more accessible from this beautiful beach. Unlike other beaches in Roatán, which require a short boat ride to reach the reef, you can explore it about 300 feet off the shore of Tabyana Beach, making it one of the best beaches for snorkeling.

Some excursions include snorkeling at Tabyana, or you can take a 20-25 minute taxi cab ride from the port.

You can relax on towels on the public beach or pay a resort fee to use nearby chairs. Local beach vendors aren’t allowed in roped-off areas, so if you want to relax without interruption, the resort fee is worth the money.

20. Spend the Day on the Private Island of Maya Key

Maya Key is a small private island that is located 3 minutes from the Roatán Cruise Terminal and 15 minutes from Mahogany Bay Cruise Terminal.

This 11.5-acre island has two beaches, a 70,000-gallon pool, an animal rescue center, jungle garden paths, a Mayan Interpretation Center, A Honduras Art Exhibit, a restaurant, and a shopping center.

Day passes for Maya Key start at $35 and include a tour of the wildlife center, access to the beaches and pools, and the use of restroom facilities. It will cost extra for the museums, food and drinks, lockers and shopping.

21. Roatan Craft Markets

Roatan Rusty Fish craft market

There are some awesome craft markets in Roatan. Many items are hand made by locals. One great shop is Rusty Fish, which uses recyclable materials.

22. Sample Local Rum at the Roatán Rum Company

Rum cakes, rum cigars, and, of course, rum are the stars of this excursion. Located between West End and West Bay, the Roatán Rum Company offers samples of unique artisan rums (dark chocolate, spiced, and Caribbean coconut, to name a few) and rum cakes.

Roatán Rum Co. is located right across from El Faro Lighthouse and next door to a small souvenir market. Many excursions combine the three.

23. Choose Your Adventure with a Customizable “Best of Roatán” Tour

If you are having a hard time deciding between all of these exciting excursions, a “Best of” tour might be the way to have your rum cake and eat it, too.

You can choose the activities you want and have the expertise of a local driver to get you where you need to go. Roatán is small enough that you should be able to fit in several activities, and tour guides are often flexible with the weather.

A customizable tour is a great way to experience all that Roatán has to offer.

Essential guide to Mahogany Bay and Coxen Hole cruise terminals in Roatán (Honduras): where cruise ships dock, all services, and amenities at the cruise terminals.

By: Editor-in-Chief Updated: May 30, 2023

Most cruisers do not realize that there are two distinct ports and terminals in Roatán. Frequent cruisers that have called at Roatán with the same cruise line may believe that the port where a specific cruise line docks is the only one in Roatán.

Where Ships Dock in Roatán

However, different cruise liens dock in two distinct ports. Carnival Corporation cruise ships dock at Mahogany Bay whilst ships from all other cruise lines dock at Port of Roatán Town Center (aka Coxen Hole).

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

The largest of the two ports in Roatán is the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center , located on the southwest coast of the island and owned by Carnival corporation. Obviously, this is the docking port (and Terminal) for Carnival ships but also for Princess, Holland & America, and all other cruise lines belonging to this corporation.

The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center has two berths where two mega ships can dock. The piers and terminal can get busy and crowded at times with over 8,000 passengers and crew.

The Mahogany Bay Terminal

The two piers of Mahogany Bay share the same exit before entering a wide walkway that leads to a vast 20 acre welcome center/terminal. Once passed a couple of stores on both sides of the walkway, you will be on large square opening into the left.

Here you will find every single service and amenity the cruise traveler many need: Restrooms, ATM, Phones, the inevitable duty-free shops with the ubiquitous brands found in the Caribbean, Grills, Bars, Restaurants and a craft market. At the end of this elongated square, you will also find an information booth, car rentals, the shore excursions hub and a taxi stand.

To the right side of the exiting walkway, it is impossible to miss the Magical Flying Beach Chair. This chairlift service transports guests from the main plaza directly to white sand of Mahogany Beach - the all day pass costs $14 USD. If you prefer, there is a shaded path to Mahogany Beach which is around 15 minutes walk away.

Mahogany Beach

The top attraction of Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is the beach. In fact, this is more like a private island run by Carnival Corporation and, in a way, is just an extension of your cruise ship. This 10-acre area with its over 800-foot-long beach is dotted with water-sports, beach activities, beach bars and grills.

Booking Excursions through Cruise Line vs. Private Company

When visiting Roatan on a cruise, one of the important decisions you’ll need to make is how to plan your onshore excursions.

You have two primary options: booking excursions through the cruise line or opting for a private tour company. Each approach has its pros and cons, and the choice ultimately depends on your preferences and priorities.

Booking through the Cruise Line

  • Convenience : Cruise lines offer a seamless booking process. You can reserve excursions online or onboard the ship, making it hassle-free.
  • Reliability : Cruise line excursions are vetted and coordinated by the cruise company. You can trust that they will be well-organized and adhere to your ship’s schedule.
  • Safety : Cruise lines prioritize passenger safety and have established protocols for excursions. They typically work with reputable tour operators.
  • Guaranteed Return : If your cruise line excursion runs late and causes the ship to depart without you, the cruise line is responsible for getting you to the next port.
  • Variety : Cruise lines offer a range of excursions to suit different interests and activity levels.
  • Cost : Cruise line excursions can be more expensive than booking independently, as the cruise line adds a markup for convenience and coordination.
  • Crowds : Cruise line excursions may have larger groups, potentially reducing the personalized experience.
  • Limited Flexibility : Itineraries and schedules are fixed, leaving limited room for customization.

Roatan Cruise Port

Booking through a Private Tour Company

  • Cost Savings : Private tour companies often offer excursions at lower prices, allowing you to get more value for your money.
  • Personalized Experience : Smaller group sizes mean you can enjoy a more personalized and intimate experience.
  • Flexibility : Private tours can often be customized to your preferences, allowing you to explore Roatan at your own pace.
  • Local Knowledge : Local tour guides can provide insights into the island’s culture, history, and hidden gems.
  • Diverse Options : You can choose from a wide range of specialized tours that may not be available through the cruise line.
  • Coordination : You’ll need to coordinate transportation to and from the cruise port, which can be less convenient than cruise line excursions.
  • Safety : While many private tour companies are reputable, there is a degree of responsibility on your part to research and choose a reliable operator.
  • Time Management : Private tours may not adhere to your ship’s schedule as rigorously as cruise line excursions, so you need to be mindful of the departure time.
  • Risk : In the unlikely event of tour delays, the cruise ship may not wait for passengers on private excursions.

Tips for Choosing

To make an informed choice, consider the following tips when looking at Roatan cruise port:

  • Research : Read reviews, check ratings, and gather information about private tour companies to ensure they have a good reputation.
  • Budget : Determine your budget and compare the cost of cruise line excursions with private options.
  • Interests : Choose excursions that align with your interests and the type of experience you seek.
  • Group Size : Consider whether you prefer a larger group experience or a more intimate one.
  • Flexibility : If you value flexibility and customization, private tours may be the better option.
  • Safety : Regardless of your choice, prioritize safety by following the guidance of tour operators and respecting local rules.

Ultimately, both cruise line and private company excursions offer unique advantages.

Your decision should be based on what matters most to you—whether it’s convenience, cost, personalized experiences, or exploring Roatan cruise port’s hidden gems with a local touch.

The Roatan Cruise Ports

There are two cruise ports in Roatan: Coxen Hole and Mahogany Bay . Coxen Hole (Port of Roatan) is a public port that is used by Virgin Voyages , Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, MSC Cruises, and other cruise lines. Mahogany Bay is a private port owned by Carnival Corporation and used by Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and Holland America Line. Both ports are located on the south side of the island, about 15 miles apart.

Coxen Hole Roatan Cruise Port

Coxen Hole is the main town and capital of Roatan, and it is where the public cruise port is located. This is the port that Virgin Voyages utilizes . It is a bustling port that has a more authentic and local feel than Mahogany Bay. Coxen Hole has a smaller shopping area with local vendors, handicrafts, and souvenirs. It also has a tourist information center, a bank, and an ATM.

Coxen Hole is the gateway to the rest of the island, and it is where you can find more options for shore excursions, transportation, and tours. You can take a taxi, a bus, or a water taxi to explore other parts of Roatan, such as West Bay, West End, Sandy Bay, or French Harbour. It does not have a beach within walking distance, but there are many nearby beaches that you can visit, such as Tabyana Beach, West Bay Beach, or Half Moon Bay Beach.

Mahogany Bay Roatan Cruise Port

Mahogany Bay is a modern and well-designed port that offers a lot of amenities and facilities for cruise travelers. It has a large shopping complex with duty-free shops, souvenir stores, restaurants, bars, and a pharmacy. It also has a transportation hub where you can book shore excursions, rent a car, or take a taxi.

The highlight of Mahogany Bay is Mahogany Beach, a private beach that is exclusive for cruise passengers. You can access the beach by walking for about 5 minutes, or by taking the Magical Flying Beach Chair, a ski-lift-style ride that costs $14 per person for unlimited rides. The beach is clean and spacious, with plenty of lounge chairs, umbrellas, cabanas, and water sports equipment for rent. There is also a beach bar and grill, a volleyball court, and a water park for kids.

Is Roatan, Honduras Safe for Cruise Port Passengers?

One of the common questions that cruise travelers have is whether Honduras is safe for cruise ships. Honduras is a developing country that has a high level of poverty, crime, and violence. However, Roatan is a separate island that is relatively safer and more peaceful than the mainland.

The cruise ports are well-secured and patrolled by security guards and police officers. The cruise lines also work closely with the local authorities and tour operators to ensure the safety and comfort of their passengers. However, this does not mean that you should let your guard down or ignore the common-sense precautions.

I felt safe all throughout Roatan. The locals were friendly and eager to have us visit as travelers. I also met a handful of travelers and ex-pats along the journey.

Things to Do in Roatan Honduras Cruise Port

Enjoy the beach.

The main attraction of Roatan is the beach! The island has over 40 miles of coastline, with white sand, turquoise water, and palm trees. You can find a beach for every taste and preference, from secluded and quiet to lively and fun. Many cruise port visitors will go to West Bay Beach. Tabyana Beach and French Key are also great options for a lovely, relaxing day.

West Bay Beach is one of the best beaches I’ve ever been to. I snorkeled along the shore and saw gorgeous colorful coral and fish. The water is very calm for swimming. And, the sand is a soft powdery white.

Along West Bay beach, there are several hotels and resorts, including the popular Infinity Bay Resort (pictured below). Infinity Bay Resort also boasts La Palapa, Beach Bar and Grill, a fun waterfront hangout with delicious seafood and flowing drinks.

Snorkel the Reef

Another major attraction of Roatan is the reef. The island is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world. The reef is home to thousands of species of fish, coral, and other marine life. It is also one of the best places in the world for snorkeling and diving, as the water is warm, clear, and calm.

You can find many spots and sites to explore the reef, from shallow and easy to deep and challenging. Some of the best spots and sites to explore the reef are West Bay Reef, Mahogany Bay Reef, and Mary’s Place which is a dive site on the south side of the island.

Experience the Culture

Roatan is not only a natural paradise, but also a cultural melting pot, with a variety of ethnic groups and languages. The island has a rich and diverse history and heritage, influenced by the indigenous, Spanish, British, African, and Caribbean cultures. You can experience the culture of Roatan by visiting some of the historical and cultural sites, such as the Roatan Museum which displays artifacts and exhibits related to the history, culture, and natural environment of the island, and Garifuna Village, the first Garifuna settlement in Central America.

Visit Roatan Chocolate Factory to see how the fresh chocolate is made on the island. While you’re there, scoop up some souveniers to take home!

You can also visit the Roatan Rum Company, which sells the most delicious rum cake! Some is packaged to easily take home from your travels, though you may have a tough time waiting to dig into it.

Encounter Wildlife

Roatan is not only a paradise for marine life, but also for land animals. The island has a diverse and abundant wildlife, with many species of animals, birds, reptiles, and insects. You can meet the wildlife of Roatan by visiting some of the animal sanctuaries and parks, such as Top Jungle, Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth Hangout, Arch’s Iguana and Marine Park, and Carambola Botanical Gardens and Trails.

Quick side note: Please do not touch or hold the sloths while visiting. This is considered animal cruelty, as sloths don’t like to be touched. Unfortunately, places that have branded themselves as sanctuaries are profiting over the exploitation of the sloths.

Tours from Roatan Cruise Port

Many travelers will take shore excursions hosted by their cruise lines, especially because of safety and assurance in getting back to the ship on time.

I recommend the following Shore Things for Virgin Voyages sailors:

  • For those who just want to hit the beach: West Bay Beach Transfer
  • For the best of the island: Trifecta Tour with mangroves pictured below
  • For adrenaline: Zip Line Adventure

Other cruise lines, like MSC, offer similar excursions.

However, you’ll get to see more of the island if you hire a local guide. Please email me directly to arrange private group tours.

I’ve gone on two trips with a local guide:

  • Private highlights of Roatan (west side of the island) – lookout points, island tour, Roatan Chocolate Factory , West Bay Beach , Roatan Rum Company , animal encounter at Jungle Top
  • Private Oak Ridge tour (east side of the island) – the “Venice of Roatan”, tiki boat, mangroves (pictured above), Trico beach bar, Reef House bar & beach. This is best for those who have been to Roatan before and are seeking a different experience.

It depends on which cruise port you dock at. If you dock at Coxen Hole (Virgin Voyages), you cannot walk to a beach from the port, but you can take a taxi, a bus, or a water taxi to one of the nearby beaches, such as West Bay Beach, Tabyana Beach,  or Half Moon Bay Beach. The ride takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the traffic and the destination, and costs about $10 to $20 per person, round trip.

At port, there will be many drivers aggressively trying to get you to drive with them. I would recommend taking a private tour but if you just want a ride, try to arrange with a reputable company in advance of your trip.

If you dock at Mahogany Bay, you can walk to Mahogany Beach, a private beach that is exclusive for cruise passengers. It takes about 5 minutes to walk to the beach, or you can take the Magical Flying Beach Chair.

Get Around in Roatan

roatan cruise port taxi

Roatan is a fairly small island in the Caribbean, but – like most Caribbean islands – the roads are winding and narrow. Even though places may only be a few miles apart, it can take you much longer to travel than it might back home. Keeping that in mind, here are some pointers on how to get around in Roatan.

Public Transportation in Roatan

Generally speaking, there are plenty of taxis and buses in Roatan so that you can easily get around without needing your own vehicle. The buses are 16-passenger vans that run regular routes between Coxen Hole and West End, and between Coxen Hole and French Harbour.

Taxis can be privado or colectivo – if you ask for a private cab, you will pay extra. But if you take a colectivo , you might pick up and drop off other people along your way. It’s a great way to chat with local residents!

If you’re visiting Roatan on a cruise ship, you can get a taxi directly from the port (either Port of Roatan or Mahogany Bay  through the contracted company drivers. Alternatively, if you do an organized shore excursion, the tour will provide your transportation. There is no need for a rental car during a cruise ship visit to Roatan.

If you are staying at a resort in Roatan, your resort will likely arrange your transport to and from the airport. Once you arrive at your resort, everything you’ll need will be right on-site. If you wish to see more of the island, you could rent a car for a day, but it’s usually better to arrange an island tour so you see more without needing to worry about driving yourself.

If you are staying in a vacation rental , check with the property manager for information on public transportation options. Some vacation rental homes are farther off the main road, so hailing a taxi won’t be easy. However, most property managers will have taxi drivers they regularly use who you can call to arrange all transport.

Rental Cars in Roatan

There are a multitude of options for rental cars in Roatan , including some international companies based at the airport and many local companies who will offer to drive the vehicle to you for extra convenience.

If you decide you need a vehicle during your stay, be sure to check what type of vehicle will be necessary for your neighborhood. Some vacation rentals require 4-wheel-drive vehicles because of hilly or unpaved roads leading to them. Others will be fine with a small economy rental. Just be sure to check in advance of your booking.

Roatan Neighborhoods

Where you stay while in Roatan will determine whether or not you need a rental vehicle during your vacation. If you stay at a resort in West Bay, you will likely not need one at all – you can arrange your airport pick-up and drop-off with the resort, plus any island tours will be easily arranged with the concierge.

If you’re staying in Sandy Bay, you can decide how often you’ll be heading out. If you plan to only go out a few times, taxis will suffice. But if your dive shop isn’t nearby, or if you want to try multiple different restaurants, or if you want to go to West Bay Beach a few times, then a rental car would make your stay more convenient.

If you’re staying on the East End, unless you’re at a resort, you will likely require a vehicle. Check with the property manager when you book your accommodation to see if a vehicle is included or available for rent. Otherwise, be sure to check what style you will require to ensure you won’t have any issues upon arrival.

Roatan Cruise Port at Coxen Hole: Attractions, Beaches, Weather

The Roatan cruise port at Coxen Hole is small in size but growing in popularity with western Caribbean cruises. It is one of two ports on the island.

Coxen Hole is the capital of the Bay Island and the largest city with a population of about 5,000 people.

Cruise visitors will disembark at what locals call Port of Roatan , which has a small but attractive cruise terminal. The “Town Center” has retail shops, restaurants and of course the starting point for excursions around the island. The port can accommodate one ship at the docks. If any others arrive at the same time, they have to anchor offshore and “tender” their passengers onto the island (transfer them via small boats).

Roatan gets plenty of attention on travel and real estate cable channels in part because it is such an inviting island. It is inviting because of long white sand beaches and great snorkeling and diving spots. It also is a convenient cruise destination; cruises also often visit the nearby port of Belize City.

Besides Coxen Hole, the other cruise port on Roatan is Mahogany Bay . Anyone traveling with Carnival Cruise Lines and related brands will land there instead. It’s a Carnival-built complex on 20 acres to the west of Coxen Hole.

It opened in 2009 as part of a trend among cruise lines to build private, commerce-oriented docking facilities.

Quick Travel Tips

Where is coxen hole and roatan.

Coxen Hole on the southwest side of Roatan is only 137 miles southwest of Belize City , which makes it an easy island to reach in combination with the Belize port. Its small size makes the visit a quick one too because of the lack of major attractions other than the beaches.

Attractions and Shore Excursions

With a small population of about 5,000 people, Coxen Hole has few cultural or historical attractions. It also has a smaller number of restaurants and duty-free shops for visitors compared to larger ports in the Caribbean.

Roatan Marine Park is a protected area of western Roatan between West Bay and Sandy Bay. It has many of the most popular diving and snorkeling spots and also some of the most popular beaches.

Gumbalimba Park is an animal preserve with parrots, monkeys, iguanas and turkeys, among other creatures.

It also has botanical gardens, a beach for swimming and other recreational activities. Activities include kayaking, snuba and scuba diving, a zipline canopy tour and the Jolly Roger Sail.

Carambola Botanical Gardens and Trails is across the road from Anthony’s Key Resort on the north side of Roatan. It has 40 acres of land for hiking, wildlife viewing and scenic tours. Garden hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Roatan Institute of Marine Science at Anthony’s Key Resort is a marine research and educational facility. Visitors can swim, snorkel or dive with dolphins.

Because local residents eat iguanas, a resident created The Iguana Farm to protect and breed the dwindling population. The farm has several thousand iguanas on the property. The best time to see the iguanas is early afternoon at feeding time. The farm is in French Key, just past French Harbour, which is about seven miles northeast of the cruise port.

South Shore Canopy is a popular zipline facility with visitors. This shore excursion has prices starting at about $50. It is nine miles southwest of Coxen Hole and near West End.

Adventurous visitors can dive as much as 2,000 feet on the Idabel, which is called the world’s deepest passenger submarine, and view marine life through a Plexiglas bubble. The tour is chartered and can carry two passengers and a pilot at any one time. It is at the Roatan Institute of Deepsea Exploration.

The Butterfly Garden is a five-minute walk from the main entrance of West End Village. Other than butterflies, the garden has tropical plants and trees, many hummingbirds, and a small collection of parrots, macaws, and toucans that have been acquired as rescue birds.

Beaches Near the Cruise Port

Coxen hole cruise port map.

Anyone not interested in snorkeling or diving may want to spend the day at the island’s famous beaches .

West Bay Beach on the southwestern tip of the island is the most famous and most popular because of its extensive white sands, resorts, restaurants and other facilities. Most cruise excursions go to a section called Tabyana Beach.

It is about a 15-minute drive from Coxen Hole, so cruise visitors need a taxi, bus, rental car or excursion bus to get there.

A five-hour shore excursion to the Sandy Bay beach will cost about $40. It’s less than 20 minutes from the port.

West End Beach is the closest beach to the Coxen Hole cruise port. Water taxis connect West End Beach with West End Village, which has an active nightlife, for about $2.60 U.S. at the time of this writing. It also is about 10 minutes by car.

Half Moon Bay is another popular beach. It’s a 20-minute drive from the cruise port.

Shopping / Restaurants

Roatan does not receive as many western Caribbean cruise visitors as Grand Cayman or Cozumel. As a result, the shopping opportunities are more limited.

Coxen Hole has an open air market, shopping plaza and supermarkets. West Bay Beach has stalls featuring local artists and retailers.

Roatan has more than 100 restaurants. They are concentrated around Coxen Hole, Mahogany Bay, West End Village, West End Beach and other popular tourist areas.

Restaurants around Coxen Hole include Frenchy’s 44, Bojangles, Haydee’s Diner, Nardo’s Bar and Grill, and Wood’s Place.

Local cuisine includes baleadas, pastilles, conch and other seafood specialities. Other local favorites include Honduran coffee, fresh local fruit smoothies and local gelato flavours.

Getting Around / Transportation

Roatan is only about 2.5 miles wide at its widest point but 40 miles long. So adventurous people with plenty of time will want to take advantage of available transportation options.

Many of the car rental agencies are located at the airport. None are located at the docks at the time of this writing, but many of them do provide pickup at both docks.

Taxi rates are fairly low. The rate from Coxen Hole to West End is about $2.20 U.S., according to Tourism Roatan. The rate from Coxen Hole to West End Beach is about $7.10.

It is important to note that rates are not fixed by a government agency or taxi association, so ask for the rates before getting into the taxi. Taxis sitting right by the docks are more likely to charge higher rates.

Two bus routes originate in Coxen Hole and go to the various popular points on the island including West End Bay. They cost about $2.60 one way to West End and Sandy Bay for a 10-minute ride.

Weather / Best Times to Go

The official dry season in Roatan runs from April through late July with an average high temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit and 30 degrees Celsius.

A rainy season tends to hit the island from late July to early September The peak rainy season goes from mid-January to the end of February.

As a result, western Caribbean cruises that visit the island are often quite popular during the spring and early summer.

If you’re taking a cruise to the western Caribbean, your itinerary might include a stop to the Honduran island of Roatán. There are two cruise ports there, one of them being the Carnival Corp.-owned Mahogany Bay.

Here, we’re going over everything you need to know about this beautiful cruise port, which includes shops, restaurants, a beach, and more.

What is Mahogany Bay?

The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is located on the southern side of Roatán, a 33-mile-long Honduran island located north of the mainland in the Caribbean Sea. The development, which opened in late 2009, is a joint venture between Carnival Corporation and local businessman Jerry Hynds.

Everything You Need to Know About Mahogany Bay Cruise Port in Roatan

The dock can accommodate two large cruise vessels, with the port area able to hold 8,000 people. There is no need for tendering at this port.

The project, which cost $62 million, encompasses 20 acres of waterfront property. Further, it includes a chair lift system (called the Magical Flying Chair) that takes visitors from the terminal building to Mahogany Beach.

The cruise port is likely named after Honduran mahogany trees. These are the most widespread species of mahogany and the only genuine mahogany species that’s grown commercially today.

Mahogany Bay is the second of two cruise ports on Roatán. The first is the Port of Roatán located west of Mahogany Bay in Coxen Hole. That port can accommodate three vessels at once — one docking alongside and two at anchorage.

The Coxen Hole cruise ship dock is where you will dock if cruising with Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, or MSC Cruises.

Getting to Mahogany Bay Cruise Port

Mahogany Bay is a private destination open only to cruise passengers. At the time of writing, only two cruise lines have sailings that include stops to Mahogany Bay: Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America Line. However, other Carnival Corporation brands (like Princess Cruises or Costa Cruises) can also call to the destination. Non-Carnival Corp. cruise lines may have agreements that allow them to stop at Mahogany Bay as well.

As the port is located in Honduras, the most common itinerary that includes Mahogany Bay are voyages to the western Caribbean. Some longer southern Caribbean voyages on Holland America also include a stop at Roatán.

Everything You Need to Know About Mahogany Bay Cruise Port in Roatan

Once you disembark your ship, walking off the dock will lead you straight into a large Dufry duty-free store. This area sells beach necessities and souvenirs as well as common duty-free goods like liquor and perfume. There is no option to avoid walking through the store. It’s part of the path that leads off the dock and out of the terminal area. The main shopping and dining area at Mahogany Bay is located just beyond the terminal and duty-free store.

Mahogany Bay Beach

If you want to head over to the port’s beach area, the easiest way to get there is via the chairlift. It costs $8 per child and $14 per adult for an all-day pass. Kids ages 3 and under ride for free, but keep in mind that there is a 32-inch minimum height requirement.

Those who want to skip the chairlift (and have some shade on their way over to the beach) can walk over from the shopping area in about 10 minutes. There’s a regular paved path, but you can also take the scenic route — a nature trail.

This trail takes you back into a wooded area and winds around the water. If you have mobility issues, we recommend either taking the chairlift or the paved path as the nature trail includes some slight elevation changes and has loose gravel. But if you want a nice trip through some flora on your way to the beach — and some great spots to take photos of your ship — consider choosing the nature trail.

There’s so much to do in the port area that you could spend your entire day ashore just enjoying what it has to offer. However, if you plan to go off exploring on your own or taking an excursion, there’s also a transportation spot with taxis and shuttles available.

What’s included at Mahogany Bay cruise port?

Visiting the 825-foot-long Mahogany Bay beach is a bit like having access to a beach club for the day. Hanging out on a lounge chair and splashing around in the surf are completely free for cruisers to enjoy. In addition to having complimentary access to the loungers, floating mats are free for guest use as well.

Additionally, the end of the beach area includes sand volleyball courts for visitors to enjoy. There’s also a basketball court and soccer field located behind the watersports rental area.

Clamshells and Cabanas

While many of the free loungers on the beach are in the shade, there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to snag a shaded one as they fill up quickly. To ensure that you’ll have plenty of shade during your beach day, you can rent a clamshell for around $30.

If you want to elevate your experience at Mahogany Bay beach, consider renting one of the beachfront cabanas. The air-conditioned cabanas can accommodate up to four guests and include the use of a semi-private beach area. They also include two loungers, a double wooden lounge bed with covered cushions at the beach, a hammock, a fridge stocked with soda and water, a bag of chips, beach accessories including four floats, a safe for valuables, a TV, WiFi access, and waiter service. The rental of a cabana also includes four chair lift tickets.

On Carnival Cruise Line’s website, a cabana rental is currently listed for $500.

Things to Do at Mahogany Bay

The cruise center just off the dock has a number of shops, including an arts and crafts market showcasing the wares of over a dozen Honduran artists. There’s also Del Sol color-changing apparel, bamboo bedding and clothing from Cariloha, Piraña Joe clothes and souvenirs, Harley Davidson, Diamonds International, Effy Jewelers, and much more. There’s even a pharmacy if you need first-aid supplies or medication.

Over on the beach side of the port area, in addition to lounging on the beach and swimming in the ocean water sports equipment is available for rent. This includes snorkeling gear, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, paddle boats, aqua cycles, and more.

The beach also has some food and beverage offerings, as does the main cruise center. That brings us to our next section…

Food and Drinks at Mahogany Bay

When you start getting hungry for lunch at the beach, head over to one of two Fat Tuesday’s locations in Mahogany Bay — the one closest to the beach is located adjacent to the beach area entrance. In addition to cocktails and other beverages, the menu includes food items such as quesadillas, nachos, wings, grilled chicken, ceviche, and more.

Other restaurants/bars that can be found at the beach area include Playa Tortugas Chill n’ Grill, El Hideaway serving up fresh seafood, and a venue offering Caribbean jerk chicken.

Over at the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center port area just off the ship, there are even more choices when it comes to food and beverages. A second Fat Tuesday’s location can be found here, as well as the Espresso Americano Coffee Shop offering fresh coffee from Honduran beans, Crazy Ice Gelato serving gelato and ice cream, and Hurricane Hole with frozen specialty cocktails.

Unlike some other cruise line private islands , you will have to head back to your ship if you are looking for free food options though.

Blue Lagoon at Mahogany Bay

If you want a more peaceful beach experience at Mahogany Bay, consider booking a package at Blue Lagoon, which is adjacent to the public Mahogany Bay beach area. There are two packages to choose from: the Blue Lagoon Package and the Blue Lagoon Deluxe Package.

Up to 50 visitors can book the regular package total, and up to 24 people can book the deluxe package, meaning the Blue Lagoon area accommodates a maximum of 74 guests total.

The Blue Lagoon has beach attendants and your own assigned waiter, plus free WiFi.

The standard Blue Lagoon package comes with:

  • Two all-day passes to the Magical Flying Beach Chair
  • Access to the beach at Blue Lagoon
  • The use of two inner tube floats
  • One double-lounge beach chair with covered cushions
  • Access to a shower area
  • Access to floating platforms in the swimming zone

The Deluxe Package comes with everything the regular package does, plus access to an upgraded lounge area with a four-post beach bed shaded in Sunbrella canvas with wrap-around curtains. Each lounge area comes with a cooler stocked with four water bottles and chilled wipes.

As an excursion through Carnival Cruise Line, the prices are currently listed as $75 for adults and $70 for kids ages 8 to 12. You must be at least 8 years old to ride, and there’s a maximum weight of 275 pounds.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

Mahogany bay’s cruise ship port.

Mahogany Bay cruise port shops

Remember that not every cruise ship visiting Roatan will use the Mahogany Bay cruise port.

Roatan, Honduras has two separate cruise ports , depending on which cruise line you’re sailing with: Port of Roatan and Mahogany Bay.

The Coxen Hole cruise ship dock ( Port of Roatan ) is used by cruise ships from Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, MSC Cruises and others.

The Mahogany Bay cruise port that we are covering today is only used by ships owned by Carnival Corporation. These ships are from cruise lines that include Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, and Costa Cruises .

The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center has two berths where two cruise ships can dock at once. The piers and terminal can get busy and crowded at times with over 8,000 excited passengers ready to explore the welcome center and isle of Roatan.

As you exit the pier you will be guided through a duty-free shop . The shop sells a variety of items including beach necessities such as water shoes and sunscreen as well as popular duty-free things. Prices are comparable to those on board the ship.

As you exit the store you will see the walkway leads to an open air plaza with lots of shops. This cruise center is where many of the excursions will meet. You can also book excursions here as well.

Where is Mahogany Bay?

where is mahogany bay

Mahogany Bay is located on the west end of the isla Roatan in the country of Honduras. It is about 5 miles from the island’s capital, Coxen Hole, which is also where the other cruise port is situated.

Roatan is one of three islands that is 31 miles off the coast of mainland Honduras. Roatan is the biggest and most populated of the three. It is about 140 miles east of Belize.

The island is part of the Western Caribbean Cruise itineraries and is one of the most popular destination ports for Caribbean cruises. From shopping, to eating out at local restaurants, to exploring nearby attractions such as Gumbalimba Park or Blue Harbor Tropical Arboretum – there’s something for everyone to enjoy! There are also plenty of beaches and water activities available for those looking for some fun in the sun.

How Big is Mahogany Bay?

Being only 5 miles wide at its widest point and 38 miles long, the Roatan island offers about 20,000 acres of beautiful nature to explore. Mahogany Bay is just a small part of the island and acts as the entryway into the gorgeous isle.

The cruise center covers about 20-acres of land and Mahogany beach takes up 10-acres of private land.

Note : Mahogany Bay is just the cruise port portion of the island of Roatan so there is much more to explore outside of the port. This article will focus mainly on the port of Mahogany Bay but will mention a few things outside of the area as well.

You can check out our article on Roatan here.

Things to Do in Mahogany Bay

mahogany bay port tips

There is something for everyone at Mahogany Bay. Whether you want to relax on the beach in your beach chair or take part in some exciting shore excursions, there is always something happening.

You can take a dolphin cruise, go snorkeling along the coral reef, or even try out kayaking in the bay. For those looking for more of an adventure, you can dive into the depths of Gumbalimba reef with a scuba dive or sail off on a catamaran tour from West End.

One of the cool things about this port of call is that you can enjoy an amazing beach day without having to spend any money at all. That’s right! The first thing on our list is totally free. Or rather, it CAN be.

If you wish to explore the outside area of the cruise port you will turn left and if you wish to visit the beach area turn right.

Here’s our list of top things to do when on a cruise to Mahogany Bay:

Mahogany Bay Beach

mahogany beach right near the cruise port, showing pier for snorkeling

Mahogany Bay Beach is for cruise passengers only, and it’s free to access. You will need to show your cruise card at the entrance. No transportation is needed to get to the beach as it’s right near the cruise port, although you can try the chair lift to make it easier (more on this later). The beach is about a 10-minute walk from the cruise terminal.

There are tons of water sport activities available. These include snorkel masks and fins, paddle boards, Zayak, Fun Cat, Sea Hammock, Aqua Cycle, Aqua Cycle Boat, Paddle Boat, Hobie Kayak, kayaks, umbrellas, and more.

While the Mahogany Bay Beach is free for cruisers the equipment rental does have an extra cost.  There are plenty of lounge chairs that are free to use, however. You just need to get there early to ensure access to them. If two ships are in port it might be more difficult to find an open lounger if you get there too late.

Only a few lounge chairs are in the shade so those fill up fast. If you want to make sure you have some shade on your beach day you can rent a clam shell for $26 for the entire day.

Loungers and clam shells at Mahogany Beach

If you want to upgrade your beach experience you can rent a cabana. Air-conditioned cabanas come with two lounge chairs, a hammock, beach accessories, a small TV, a safe to keep valuable safe, Wi-Fi, and waiter service in a semi-private beach area. There’s also a refrigerator stocked with sodas and water.

Fully air-conditioned beach cabanas come with two lounge chairs, a hammock, necessary beach items, free Wi-Fi and waiter service in a semi-secluded beach area.

The beach is over 800 feet long and offers some secluded lounger retreats, a dock for snorkeling, and a two-story gazebo that overlooks the pristine waters.

If you get hungry while hanging out at the beach there is an open-air restaurant right there. Fat Tuesday is also right outside the beach entrance and has an extensive menu with food and drinks. There are also 5 or 6 different places right in and around the main cruise center area.

There are restrooms and showers right there at the beach just near the restaurants, so you can rinse all the sand off before heading back to the ship.

Take the Nature Trail

The nature trail in Mahogany Bay will take you to the free beach area. There is a more straightforward path to get there as well but the nature walk offers some interesting vegetation along the way, along with some good photo ops of your cruise ship.

As the trail winds through the wooded area it bends around towards the water with only slight elevation.

Having to step over tree roots that could trip you up, be mindful there is some loose gravel along the path as well. If you’re walking to or from Mahogany Beach you might as well try the nature trail during one of your walks just to spice things up a little.

Ride the Magic Flying Chairlift

magic flying chairlift in mahogany bay

Tired of walking and just want a fun ride to the beach? At $14 per person ($8 for children) to ride the chairlift all day, this one can be a bit on the expensive side. And it might not be for everyone. After all, the walk to the free beach is only about .7 miles away and the walkway provides such lovely flowers and scenery along the way.

But the views from the Magic Flying Chair are pretty spectacular as well, and after a long day playing water sports at the beach you might just want to sit down and take in the stunning views of Roatan on your way back to the dock at Mahogany Bay.

Note: The chairlift will not save you time as it moves rather slowly. Also, you will be above the tree canopy which provides great views of the ship and water, but that also means you will be in the sun a lot.

Enjoy a Zip Line Adventure

A zip line adventure is a great way to experience the Caribbean! On your cruise to Roatan, you’ll be able to book a zip line excursion at the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center. The cruise center is within walking distance of the port and beach, so it’s easy to get there from your cruise ship.

The excursion takes you across the island, giving you a unique aerial view of Roatan that you won’t get anywhere else. If you’re looking for an adrenaline-filled adventure while on your cruise, taking a zip line tour is definitely worth it. You’ll be able to see stunning views of the Caribbean and even make stops along the way for some fun in the sun.

You can book an zip line adventure both at Extreme Adventure Park and also Gumbalimba Park. Each will cost about $100 per person.

Snorkeling in and Around Mahogany Bay

There are some amazing reefs around the island of Roatan. And with over 100 miles of coastline you have plenty of options.

But you don’t have to go far from the Mahogany Bay cruise port to find some great spots as well. Though the beach is man-made there is some great beginner-friendly snorkeling locations right off the pier. The reef has some great coral and marine life that most casual snorkelers will enjoy.

Here are some of the best snorkeling locations around the island:

  • Little French Cay
  • West Bay Beach
  • Starfish Alley
  • West End Reef
  • Palmetto Bay

Explore the West End of Roatan

Exploring the West End of Roatan is an incredible experience. From the lush, tropical forests to the pristine white-sand beaches, it’s easy to see why this area is so popular with tourists.

You can spend a day snorkeling or diving in the crystal-clear waters and then relax on the beach while watching the sun set over the horizon. There are also plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops to explore in the area.

Whether you’re looking for souvenirs or local cuisine, you’ll be able to find something to suit your needs. Be sure to take a cable car ride up into the mountains for breathtaking views of Roatan’s stunning landscape!

Spend The Day At West Bay Beach

west bay beach, Roatan

Located just off the port of West End and close to Mahogany Bay, West Bay Beach offers some of the best white sand beaches and crystal clear waters in the area. And this does come with a cost. For entrance into the beach area the cost is $27 for children and $35 for adults. Children 4 and under are free.

The drive from the cruise terminal to West Bay Beach is about 25 minutes long and will take you across mountainous jungles and incredible views.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach day or exciting water activities such as snorkeling, West Bay Beach won’t disappoint. The bay offers stunning views of the Caribbean Sea and nearby islands, while the beach area has plenty of loungers and umbrellas to enjoy your day under the sun.

The warm waters are also perfect for swimming and kayaking, making it an ideal destination for all ages. With so much to do and see at West Bay Beach, it’s easy to understand why it is one of Roatan’s most popular spots.

All-Inclusive Beach Club

roatan cruise port taxi

Excursions to the all-inclusive beach club are available through your cruise ship. It’s a 30 minute bus ride to the private beach club and everything is included from towels, umbrellas, lunch, and unlimited drinks.

You will have a server who will bring you drinks and lunch so you never even have to get out of your lounger.  There are also over the water cabanas that you can book.

There is a place just for kids and swings in the water if you want to get that perfect Instagram shot from your vacation.  Excursions generally last about four hours at the beach club before heading back to the ship.

Visit the Monkey and Sloth Hangout

Located in French Cay, Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth Hangout is a family-run animal sanctuary. At the Hangout you will get to interact with the sloths and monkeys and learn all about these fascinating creators. You will get to even hold a sloth, which is a unique experience in itself, and something you will never forget.

Besides the animal sanctuary, the family-owned company also offers island tours, kayaking, hydro bikes, and snorkeling adventures.

You can check out their website here .

Visit the Chocolate Factory

The Chocolate Factory in Roatan is located in the city of French Harbour. This popular factory offers a wide range of hand-crafted chocolates, from classic favorites to unique specialty flavors. Visitors can enjoy a tour of the factory and learn about the process of making chocolate from bean to bar.

Whether you’re looking for a delicious treat or something special for a loved one, the Chocolate Factory in Roatan is sure to have something that will satisfy your sweet tooth!

Check out the Roatan chocolate factory here .

Visit Mangroves and Iguanas

An excursion to tour the Garifuna Mangrove Tunnel will take you to the east side of Roatan to experience some local culture away from blatant tourism. You will get to see all kinds of things along the way, like the noncommercial French Harbor, French Cay, and the Iguana Farm with large green iguanas.

Then the tour will take you to an authentic Cayuco canoe where the guide will take you through the mangrove tunnel. With so much wildlife to see along the way this is definitely a tour for nature lovers.

Relax At Little French Key

Little French Key is a private island off the coast of Roatan, Honduras in the Caribbean Sea. It is best known for its picturesque beach and turquoise waters, ideal for snorkeling and kayaking. Visitors can take a Mahogany Bay Cruise from the Cruise Center to reach the island, which is also serviced by other day cruises. Once at Little French Key, you can relax on the white sand beach or lounge on one of the many hammocks strewn around the property.

There are several restaurants and bars that serve international cuisine and drinks for visitors to enjoy. Plus, there are plenty of activities such as swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and more. If you’re looking for a peaceful getaway with stunning views and plenty of activities to enjoy, then Little French Key is an excellent choice.

Visit Gumbalimba Park

Gumbalimba Park is a popular destination for visitors to the Caribbean island of Roatan. Located in West Bay, the park is accessible by cruise ship for an excursion or via a taxi from other parts of the island.

At Gumbalimba Park, you can take a zipline tour through the tropical jungle canopy and explore the beaches while snorkeling in the crystal clear waters.

The park also features a botanical garden with native plants and wildlife, as well as a replica of a pirate ship complete with cannons and rope bridges. You can also enjoy live music and traditional Honduran cuisine at the on-site restaurant and bar.

Whether you want to relax on the beach or get your adrenaline pumping on an exciting adventure, Gumbalimba Park offers something for everyone!

Website for Gumbalimba Park .

Take A Scuba Diving Lesson

In Roatan, West Bay Beach offers some of the most beautiful and vibrant coral reefs in the world. Here you can take part in an amazing excursion where you can learn how to scuba dive and explore the barrier reef.

With its crystal clear waters, abundance of marine life, and fascinating coral formations, it’s no wonder why so many people come here to take a scuba diving lesson.

Port Shopping

The shopping area at Mahogany Bay is filled with many unique stores that are sure to have something for everyone. From souvenirs to local crafts, there is plenty of merchandise to choose from in this duty-free shopping area.

After you have finished exploring the shops, you can relax on the nearby beach or take a dip in the crystal clear waters of Roatan.

Take An Island Tour

If it’s my first time to an island on a cruise I often like to get an island tour to really understand all the port of call has to offer. A good tour operator guide also knows all the popular places and even off-the-beaten-path locations known mostly to local residents.

Swim With Dolphins

Swimming with dolphins at Mahogany Bay, Roatan is an unforgettable experience. During this excursion, you’ll be able to observe dolphins up close in their natural habitats. You’ll also have the chance to see other fish, turtles and even stingrays while you snorkel.

The knowledgeable guides will provide you with all the necessary equipment such as masks and fins. They will also be available to answer any questions and to ensure your safety during the entire duration of your swim with dolphins experience.

Catamaran Ride and Snorkeling with BOSS

A catamaran ride with snorkeling is the perfect way to explore the beauty of the ocean around Roatan. With BOSS Excursion, you can take a private or group tour and enjoy the amazing views of the Caribbean Sea. During your tour, you can experience snorkeling while exploring the underwater world.

You will also have access to a variety of activities such as kayaking, paddle boarding and swimming in clear turquoise waters. Moreover, you can observe dolphins and other aquatic creatures from above or below the surface. All this is possible thanks to BOSS Excursion’s professional crew and well-maintained catamarans that provide a safe and comfortable journey for everyone.

Tips on Leaving the Port Area

If you want to really explore Roatan and all it has to offer you will want to get outside of the cruise center. There is one care rental company that serves the entire island or you can take a taxi. The entire island is broken up into zones by the local taxi association. A trip to Coxen Hole from Mahogany Bay will cost around $20 and all other zones can range from $15-$25.

In Zone A taxi rates will be based on the trip, but as soon as you leave Zone A the pricing will be based on the number of passengers.

If you have a large group that you want to keep together you can take a mini-bus. They are called “ Rapidito ” on the island. These mini-buses can accommodate a maximum of 15 individuals, and they will ensure that your party remains intact while you travel throughout the island. Prices can vary but may be around $300-$400 for a 5 hour use.

Hi, Leonorew,

Holiday Inn Vonogradovo is far from any metro station.

You can get the shuttle back the the airport and take a bus from the airport to Rechnoi Vokzal metro station, which is exactly where you need to get.

Your destination - The Northern River Port - is in walking distance from Rechnoi Vokzal metro station.

But timewise, it makes much more sense to take a taxi, moreover, if you consider that for the express Sheremetyevo-Rechnoi Vokzal you wil have to pay, perhaps, RUR 200 for two and for the taxi Vinogradovo-Rechnoi Vokzal about RUR 400 for two (about USD 15), the difference is not worth the lost time, IMHO.

Enjoy your trip

Dear PUPSA,

thanks so much for your reply. That is good information, and I agree that taking a taxi makes the most sense. I assume there will be someone to help us do just that at the Holiday Inn Vinogradova? who speaks English and can tell the taxi driver where we need to go...Thanks again, Leonore
