9 incredible luxury family safari lodges for the ultimate African adventure

Melissa Klurman

Giraffes and zebras and elephants — oh my! What child wouldn't want to go on an African safari and see these wondrous animals up close, in the wild and in their natural environments? (Not to mention, lions, warthogs, antelope, cheetah, jaguar, wild dogs and the myriad other wild things that call the African bush their home).

How, though, do you take the kids on a bucket list African safari and have not only the space, but also the comforts and attention, necessary to keep you all happy?

The answer is simple: luxury safari lodges built for families.

These incredible accommodations run the gamut from elegant villas to multi-bedroom glamping tents. What they all have in common is plenty of room to spread out, ultra-luxurious furnishings, gourmet dining and top-tier service all within arm's reach of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world.

Take your family along to these nine fantastic lodges in Africa.

Singita Pamushana Malilangwe House — Zimbabwe

safari lodge

Perched high on a sandstone ridge overlooking the shimmering expanse of the Malilangwe Dam sits Singita Pamushana, the only safari lodge located in the exclusive, 130,000-acre Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve.

I've been on dozens of safaris and found this safari lodge to be a truly special wild corner of Africa: You'll never see another safari vehicle as you explore the reserve populated by endangered black rhino and large populations of elephant, cheetah, wild dog and leopard.

Captivating views of wildlife-filled wilderness stretch everywhere you look, but the camp itself is a family-friendly oasis of paved walkways (a rarity at African safari camps), protected from wildlife, so you can walk without an escort in the evenings.

Also perfect for families: The five-bedroom, five-bathroom Malilangwe House, an expansive, exclusive-use African home overlooking the Malilangwe Dam.

Among the highlights of this sophisticated retreat are a large, private infinity pool, a spacious dining room and living room with floor-to-ceiling windows, and a chef's kitchen — complete with a personal chef. It's designed with a mix of traditional Shangaan materials mixed with a bright palette that makes the house feel fun for kids instead of stuffy.

Another perk of staying at Malilangwe House: A private vehicle and dedicated driver and ranger will take your family on twice-daily game drives tailored to suit your personal interests, whether that's looking for majestic birds or herds of elephants.

Age considerations and rates: Children of any age can join on game drives, but they must be over 16 and older to participate in a bush walk.

All-inclusive rates start at $12,390 per night for up to six guests, or $14,380 per night for seven to 10 guests, at off-peak times (Jan. 6–31, May and Oct. 1–Dec. 14) and rise to per night rates of $16,220 for up to six guests and $18,880 for seven to 10 guests during peak periods (July and August and Dec. 15 –Jan. 5).

Time + Tide Chongwe House — Lower Zambezi, Zambia

safari lodge

For all the comforts of home, but with a dramatic change of scenery, Time + Tide's two-story, four-bedroom, four-bathroom private Chongwe House feels a bit like if the Swiss Family Robinson hired an interior designer to create an upscale treehouse home.

Open-air rooms incorporate natural elements such as rocks and stone slabs and look like they've been carved from a secret tunnel of caves.

There's also furniture created from fallen winter thorn trees, couches perched on river rocks, slab rock coffee tables, open-air bathtubs that seem to float over the river, outdoor rainfall showers open to the sky and terraces that jut into the open air. It's a dream destination for kids made complete when elephants follow the river walk by the private pool.

A dedicated house staff — including a cook and a private guide — will help plan your days and accompany your family on not only game drives, but also on treks that take advantage of the unique river setting such as canoe safaris, boat cruises and angling trips to catch tiger fish.

Age considerations and rates: Children of all ages are welcome at Chongwe House; minimum age for walking safaris is 12.

All-inclusive rates start at $900 per adult, per night (minimum of six adults) in April, May and November, and $1,200 per adult, per night in June to October (the property is closed the rest of the year). Children 4 to 18 pay 50% of adult rate, children 3 and under stay free.

Natural Selection's Safari House — Etosha, Namibia

safari lodge

For a desert-focused safari destination, Namibia thrills with the ability to see both black and white rhinos along with fascinating desert species such as black-faced impala, oryx and the elusive Hartmann's zebra, in addition to lion, cheetah, eland and antelope species.

To experience a desert safari with your family, Natural Selection's aptly, if not creatively, named Safari House, a private use farmhouse in Etosha Heights Private Reserve, bordering famed Etosha National Park, fits the bill.

The farmhouse offers a home-away-from-home feel with overstuffed couches and lots of comfortable spaces where little ones can unwind after a long day listening for the crashes of white rhinos the area is known for.

Don't think, though, that luxury isn't at play at this three bedroom, three bathroom farmhouse. There's a fully fenced and enclosed swimming pool and adjacent lush garden — ideal for kids to safely play in — and a full kitchen with a private chef who can serve meals catered to your family's tastes inside in the dining room or outside under the open Africa sky by your boma (fire pit).

A private safari car and guide will tailor game drives to your family's interests either on excursions to the waterhole just a mile from the house or traversing the private reserve.

Age considerations and rates: Children of any age can join on game drives, but they must be over 12 and older to participate in a bush walk. The entire property can be yours for $2,100 per night, all-inclusive, for up to six adults and three children.

&Beyond's Tengile River Lodge — Sabi Sands, South Africa

safari lodge

Two enormous free-standing (and air-conditioned) suites are connected by a covered walkway to create a self-contained family suite at Tengile River Lodge nestled in Sabi Sands, the exclusive private reserve that borders famed Kruger National Park. From this posh lodging perch, you and your family will be able to view animals that are drinking from and following the Sand River, which runs alongside the camp and right outside the family suite.

This double unit comprises two suites, so your family will get not one but two pools, plus two spacious decks with sunken living rooms, two outdoor showers and two oversize tubs that could also be mistaken for plunge pools. When booking the family suite you can also arrange a private safari vehicle and guide for the duration of your stay so you can look for the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) and explore the 5-million-acre Sabi Sands conservation area (roughly the size of New Jersey) in comfort.

Age considerations and rates: Children ages 12 and up are welcome at Tengile. The all-inclusive rate for the family suite is $6,385 per night for four people.

Asilia's Jabali Private House — Ruaha National Park,Tanzania

safari lodge

Tucked into Ruaha National Park, an expansive wilderness area that's nearly half the size of Switzerland, is Jabali Private House, a stylish stand-alone property that gives your family the exclusive run of the three-bedroom home and the surrounding area without encountering other guests nearby. The private house includes two bedrooms lightly decorated in a light and airy, cream-toned palette so you can focus on the views outside instead of the spaces inside.

Whether you're lounging in beanbag chairs on the deck or floating in your infinity pool, you'll be able to keep an eye on the bordering Ikuka escarpment where large herds of elephants can often be seen. Jabali Private House also comes with the included services of a private chef who can offer cooking lessons in the house's kitchen as well as a curated menu for your family.

A private vehicle and guide will cater game drives specifically to your family's interests.

Age considerations and rates: Children ages 5 and up are welcome at Jabali.

Low season (November–Dec. 19 and Jan. 6 –March 14) the all-inclusive rate is $4,375 per night; high season (July to October and Dec. 20–Jan. 5) it is $6,130 per night (rates are for entire house).

Great Plains' Mara Nyika — Maasai Mara, Kenya

safari lodge

For true "Out of Africa" vibes, it's hard to beat this luxurious tented camp tucked into the lush green plains of the Maasai Mara's Naboisho Conservancy where you and your family will have a front-row seat for the great migration of thousands of wildebeests and zebra. Although you'll be able to see wildlife here any time of year, the best chance to see peak numbers during migration are August through October.

Mara Nyika is a Relais and Château property that demonstrates why tented "glamping" safaris in Kenya became the industry leader. Picture copper soaking tubs, leather couches and rich silk carpets all within the canvas walls of ultra-plush tents.

Mara Nyika sleeps just 14 guests across an area spanning 50,000 acres — so you won't have to share the camp with other people. Unique to this kind of tented safari, the camp has two new family suites comprising two bedrooms each. In such a remote spot, it's a special perk to have your kids staying under the same roof in spacious accommodations, and not in cots crammed into the corners of a tent.

Activities here include not only morning and night game drives but also the unique opportunity to visit a local Maasai Mara community. One more reason: You can take the kids on a hot air balloon ride across the Maasai Mara to spot wildlife.

Age considerations and rates: Children ages 6 and up are welcome at Mara Nyika.

All-inclusive rates per two-bedroom family suite per night range from $3,600 for off-peak (April–June 14; November–Dec. 19) to $7,050 for peak season (June 15–Oct. 31, and Dec. 20–Jan. 10).

Toka Leya, Wilderness Safaris — Victoria Falls, Zambia

safari lodge

A visit to Victoria Falls, also known as Moasi a Tunya ("The Smoke that Thunders"), is a popular part of an African family safari. When I visited with my own daughter, I chose Toka Leya , a Wilderness Safaris property, for its fabulous location perched right on the Zambezi River and its family tents that comprise two en suite bedrooms with four-postered, canopied beds and a shared living room with an enormous deck to relax on.

We found it to be a very laid-back stay after some hectic travel — until, that is, the monkeys started jumping on our tent roof (actually a real perk of this safely fenced lodge). Another family perk of the river-front lodge — a real pizza oven serving up hot and gooey cheese-topped, wood-fired dough that we enjoyed to a chorus of hippos nearby.

Since this is a lodge and not a hotel, there are plenty of activities included in the rate: game drives into a nearby wildlife reserve; boat trips on the Zambezi River; and yes — the best for last — escorted trips to Victoria Falls, where you'll feel the mist of the falls as you witness the thundering waters up close.

Prepare to get wet — very wet — in peak season, February to June, but having a private escort means someone will be waiting with a nice, dry towel and a bottle of chilled water once you get back to the vehicle.

Age considerations: Recommended minimum age for Toka Leya is 6 years old. All-inclusive rates range from $684 per person, per night (Jan. 6–March 31) to $870 per person, per night (June through October).

Royal Malewane's Africa House — Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa

safari lodge

If your safari plans include an extended family group for a special reunion or celebration journey, this is the safari you've been looking for.

Royal Malewane's Africa House (part of The Royal Portfolio) in South Africa's Greater Kruger National Park bills itself as a "bush villa" and it delivers the type of grandeur that description conjures. There are six en-suite bedrooms, all with outdoor showers and decks, and space for 12 guests to spread out and fully relax. Since the house is completely self-contained, the kids can wake up early or play without worrying about disturbing anyone. (Also note that there is an additional room to house a nanny or private guide, photographer or pilot.)

The home is elegantly furnished with antique furniture, carved four-poster beds, plush silk pillows and Persian rugs, but it will still feel comfortable for kids since there are pops of color and whimsy, outdoor day beds to relax on, and a private pool.

A dedicated staff is included with a stay at Africa House, so you'll have a personal chef to plan meals to please all palates, plus two private cars and guides if you've brought nine to a dozen people, or one guide and safari car for groups of eight or less.

On those game drives you'll have a fantastic chance of spotting the Big 5 of African lore that Kruger is renowned for: lion, elephant, leopard, Cape buffalo and rhino.

Age considerations and rates: Children of all ages are welcome at Africa House.

All-inclusive rates start at $14,000 per night for one to eight guests (with one private vehicle) and $17,000 for nine to 12 guests (with two private vehicles)

The Stable Cottage, The Manor at Ngorongoro — Tanzania

safari lodge

A rolling verdant grass lawn leads up to The Stable Cottage at Ngorongoro , a whitewashed Dutch Colonial manor house that feels more like a country estate in Europe instead of the famed safari conservation area that's attracted travelers since the time of Teddy Roosevelt.

Don't worry though — just beyond the comfy confines of this spacious private home is the wild Africa you've come to explore. Here, your kids will have plenty of space to spread out across two floors, featuring a master bedroom and twin bedroom — each with their own individual bathrooms — a family lounge area downstairs, and another twin room, plus a bathroom and playroom upstairs.

Along with an elegant home to call your own, The Stable Cottage comes with the option to book a full "game package," which I highly recommend. With this package, your family with receive a private vehicle and driver/ranger for guided gamed drives to search for wildlife like lions and zebra in Ngorongoro Crater or Lake Manyara wildlife area. More uniquely, you'll also be able to participate in horseback riding on the estate, a truly special way to explore this corner of Africa.

Age considerations: Children of all ages are welcome at The Stable Cottage.

Rates range from $2,729 per night for all-inclusive use of the cottage, including all safari outings (April 1–May 31) to $3,826 per night (July 1–Oct. 31 and Dec. 20–Jan. 3).

One&Only's Gorilla's Nest — Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

safari lodge

For safari aficionados, there are few adventures more thrilling than trekking up a volcano to search for the elusive and endangered silverback gorillas in their natural habitat.

For families looking to expand their safari travels beyond their vehicle, gorilla trekking ranks high as the penultimate safari, a thrilling and immersive opportunity to view nature on foot. You'll hike into the deep jungle with your small safari group and expert guide and then trek into the mountains until you rendezvous with one of the remote families of gorillas that the rangers work round-the-clock to protect. You may have to work a bit to finally meet these incredible primates, but it's a moment you and your family will never forget.

When you're not adventuring into the bush, you'll have a luxurious base for your exploring at the incredibly swank One&Only's Gorilla Nest . The jungle-chic chalets are tucked into the eucalyptus forest and make you feel like you're living in the trees. The family option, the two-bedroom Forest Lodge, stretches over nearly 1,000 square feet and includes two bedrooms: one giant primary suite and a second room that can either be for two children 12 and under (although note that gorilla trekking is ages 15 and up) or one "adult" over 12. This is a sleek modern hideaway, but it still offers old school safari touches such as a fireplace and a standalone bathtub with forest views.

Age considerations: Children 10 and up are welcome on property. Note that visitors should be comfortable in rugged walking and hiking environments — the only way to see the endangered mountain gorillas is to trek into the mountains.

The all-inclusive property rate for a family of four starts at $7,800 per night. Note that while on-property activities are included in the nightly fee, gorilla trekking fees of $1,500 per person, per trek are paid directly the Rwandan government and are an additional cost.

Beautiful Safari Lodges

Kiwi Curated

The most beautiful safari lodges.

Just the thought of an African safari has travelers dreaming up scenes of breathtaking wilderness, sunrise bush walks and wide open skies. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime trip where hot air ballooning, stargazing and Big Five sightings are simply part of the daily routine. With regular visitors that include elephants and lions, these 10 safari lodges are among the most beautiful wildlife havens on earth.

Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge

A maze of twisting water channels, papyrus-fringed banks and floating islands teeming with wildlife—known as the river that never finds the sea, Botswana’s Okavango Delta, known as the river that never finds the sea, is the jewel of the Kalahari. And in the heart of the Delta, guests will find Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge . Melting into the surrounding forest canopy of wild palms and gnarled fig trees, eight thatched cottages reside in leafy clearings right on the edge of the waterways. The unassuming outer appearance of these lodgings goes unnoticed, even by animals at times who occasionally wander by, but inside are oases of tranquility. While guests have a chance to set their sights on the Big Five by vehicle or foot, there’s also the option to take to the air with a scenic helicopter flight over the Okavango Delta’s mosaic of plains and lagoons.

Zannier Hotels Sonop

The beauty and boundlessness of Zannier Hotels Sonop , set within the remote and unspoiled setting of untouched Namibian desert, channels the opulence of an old-world safari. Constructed on top of granite boulders, the hideaway’s 10 spacious tents are carefully selected with everything one may need for an authentic safari escape—binoculars, maps, travelers’ tales, telescopes, antique desks and handmade stationery. The lodge captures the restorative essence of the desert landscape with a spectacular open-air infinity pool, spa, fitness center and daily yoga to truly integrate guests’ well-being with the natural world. When desert adventure calls, guided excursions include horseback riding, private dining atop sand dunes and hot air balloons or private sunset safaris where one may just spot oryx, jackals or leopards. The magic continues after dark with a nightly gala-style dinner, open-air cinema and stargazing.

Singita Lebombo Lodge

Giving guests a front-row seat to South Africa’s expansive Kruger National Park is Singita Lebombo Lodge . Sculptural and bold, the light-filled lodge suspended above the N’Wanetsi River blends ever so beautifully into the untamed terrain of Singita’s private 33,000-acre concession. Thirteen completely glass-walled suites with “eagle’s nest” views draw from contemporary safari living while communal areas of the lodge offer elegant and meditative spaces immersed in a dramatic landscape of giant euphorbia trees. On game drives, guests are encouraged to step down from the vehicle and become actively involved in tracking animals. Once back at the lodge, there’s a multi-level retreat that boasts a library, wine studio and a 25-meter lap pool to be enjoyed.

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

Where endangered black rhinos are protected, giant tusked elephants wander the forests, male lions stalk the grasslands and flamingos crowd the soda lakes, guests will find Ngorongoro Crater Lodge . Surrounded by miles of pristine African wilderness at the eastern edge of the Serengeti in northern Tanzania, the lodge is the ideal base to explore the three-million-year-old caldera and the surrounding conservation area. Divided into three camps, 30 suites with banana leaf ceilings, grand chandeliers and grass roofs are perched on the edge of the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater, providing spectacular views of the area that plays home to the great migration of wildebeest and zebra. From guided walking safaris around the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater to visiting a Maasai cultural village, this elegant baroque châteaux transports you into one of the most famous African landscapes.

safari lodge

The only permanent camp in the Serengeti’s remote south, Sanctuary Kusini offers front-row seats for when the great migration passes through at full throttle. While the main lodge is set around a cluster of rocky outcrops, 12 open-plan tents are positioned carefully to give spectacular views of the surrounding plains. Each tent has its own butler, and features a small library and elevated viewing deck. While most come to Africa looking for wildlife, one of the most spectacular sights is the night sky. Offering some of the best stargazing in the world, sit around the lodge’s campfire for a cosmic safari and allow the camp manager to reveal the universe right before your eyes.

Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge

Guests travel from far and wide to Rwanda to hike into the Parc National des Volcans in search of the majestic mountain gorilla and the enchanting golden monkey. To see these animals in their natural habitat is surely one of the most thrilling wildlife experiences possible, and you can make it a dream come true at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge . A spectacular forest retreat situated on the foothills of the Virungas mountain range, this lodge features individual cottages with decks and fireplaces, plus two patio areas that afford wonderful and dramatic views of the surrounding countryside.

Ulusaba Private Game Reserve

Ulusaba means “place of little fear.” That’s because the koppie (hill) where Ulusaba Private Game Reserve ’s Rock Lodge sits provided the ancient Shangaan warriors with the perfect lookout point—meaning guests are treated to unforgettable views of world-renowned Sabi Sands. The Richard Branson-owned lodge is two lodges: one on top of a small mountain with panoramic views and a second in the heart of the 13,500-hectare  bush close to all the action. Staffed by locals, these lodges feature South African décor, plunge pools and great views of the animals as they stroll past on their way to the nearby watering hole.

andBeyond Kichwa Tembo Camp

Sprawled out along the banks of the Saparingo River, where riverine forest meets the sweeping plains in the seasonal path of the great migration, andBeyond Kichwa Tembo Camp dazzles with a contemporary safari feel. Maasai-inspired interiors are complemented by organic gardens, a massage tent and a rim-flow swimming pool literally on the edge of the Mara offering one of the world’s most extraordinary views. For added glamour to your luxury safari, guests are also treated to morning bush cappuccinos, evening sundowners on game drives and a complimentary pair of Swarovski Optik binoculars.

Royal Zambezi Lodge

With lions roaring in the distance and hippos playing in the river, the luxurious thatched suites of Royal Zambezi Lodge furnish a perfect base from which to explore wild and beautiful Zambezi National Park. Here, binoculars aren’t needed—elephants wander along the river’s edge as you watch from a plunge pool on your private deck. You can also get up close and personal with crocodiles and hippos on a river canoe trip. But if relaxation is more your style, retreat to your airy tent for an afternoon nap or get pampered at the bush spa.

Singita Pamushana Lodge

Guests have exclusive access to 130,000 acres of untouched wilderness and can immerse themselves in nature on bush walks, sundowner boat cruises, excursions to rock art sites and twice-daily game drives to catch a glimpse of a rare black rhino. Plus, having your own private plunge pool amid lush gardens and hills is the perfect way to end any thrilling safari adventure.

Top 10 Safari Lodges in Africa in 2020

This year’s World’s Best Awards survey closed on March 2, just before widespread stay-at-home orders were implemented as a result of COVID-19. The results reflect our readers’ experiences before the pandemic, but we hope that this year’s honorees will inspire your trips to come — whenever they may be.

If there’s one type of bucket-list vacation that will need no embellishment, it’s a safari trip . For those who love wild places, there’s nothing comparable to seeing nature free from human intervention — elephants wandering through camp, hyenas sniffing the tires of your Land Rover, lions napping in the dust of a dry riverbed at midday, unbothered by your camera clicking furiously just yards away. Training your eye to spot a leopard tail hanging from a distant tree, or to distinguish a hippo track from an elephant footprint, gives you a connection with the natural world that you can’t get digitally. It’s a truly transformative experience, one made even better by choosing the right lodge — like the ones T+L readers have chosen as the best safari lodges in Africa.

Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city or resort based on their locations and amenities.

Related : The World's Best Awards 2020

The T+L readers who weighed in know that luxury is all in the details: a hot water bottle and coffee just the way you like it makes a crack-of-dawn wake-up call feel pleasurable, and a guide who’s intimately familiar with every inch of the terrain can help you spot wildlife without a herd of other vehicles crowding the view. This year’s winners represent destinations both established (the Serengeti, the Masai Mara) and emerging (Rwanda’s gorilla treks are still relatively new, yet have taken off in recent years). Yet each has something special to recommend it.

Safari-goers from lodges across the Mara make the bumpy middle-of-the-night drive to Governor’s Camp (No. 8), in part to bask in its renowned sunrise balloon rides. No. 9, andBeyond’s dreamy Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, sits on the caldera rim, so you can be the first ones into the crater in the morning and the last out at night — and the camp’s lush grounds are a magnet for zebras, which will graze unperturbed as you walk mere feet away. Gibb’s Farm (No. 7) captures a kind of relaxed, understated luxury that feels livable — as one reader wrote, “If you want to feel like you are in Africa, but also in the most gorgeous hotel in Napa, and everything is sustainable, thoughtful, and lovely, this place is for you.” Angama Mara (No. 10) is the very site on which many scenes from Out of Africa were filmed, making it the ideal spot for Dinesen superfans (Robert Redford not included).

From homey, family-friendly spots (like No. 7 Gibb’s Farm) to ultra-romantic honeymoon destinations (No. 2 Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti is a standout), this list of the best African safari lodges has it all. Read on to see all the rankings and learn about this year’s No. 1, Singita Kruger National Park.

1. Singita Kruger National Park, South Africa

Score: 98.25

More information: singita.com

Singita Kruger has an edge over other Kruger camps: it’s really two properties in one, each with a distinct audience, aesthetic, and environment, so that you can get two trips in one. The seven-suite Singita Sweni, the newer of the two properties, is nestled among the trees on a riverbank, where you can glimpse crocodiles wallowing in the shallows and the big cats coming to lap at the water’s edge. Higher up on the ridgeline, Singita Lebombo is open and airy, with a sun-drenched parcel of land and 13 suites that feature decks with hanging beds should you care to sleep under the stars. Both properties share unfettered access to Singita’s 33,000-acre private concession, a thicketed patch of Kruger ecosystem where you’ll round a bend and find yourself face-to-face with a tower of giraffes gorging themselves on acacias. Sundowners of G&Ts and Singita’s house-made biltong cap off the day, but don’t fill up on snacks — both properties have fantastic dining programs thanks to Singita’s own cooking school, a highly competitive program that trains promising local students for culinary careers at the company’s lodges and around the world.

2. Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Score: 97.82

The Best South Africa Safari Lodges

Treehouse bedroom at a safari lodge in South Africa

South Africa is one of the best countries to see wildlife in its natural habitats. Not only is accommodation here often more affordable than Tanzania, Botswana and Kenya lodges , but South Africa also home to all of the Big 5 and a plethora of other animals in its national parks and private game reserves. But where’s best to stay when observing its wildlife?

In this post, we’ve got some of the best South Africa safari lodges as fantastic options for you – from budget camps to the most luxurious safari lodges in South Africa.

Visiting South Africa? Check out this  2 week South Africa itinerary  for some more inspiration.

Africa on Foot in Klaserie Private Nature Reserve

Africa on Foot is an intimate safari lodge in the heart of Klaserie Private Nature Reserve – just outside Kruger National Park. The accommodation is very comfortable, with each guest/couple or family staying in one of five chalets – a mud brick hut with a thatched roof. Our chalet even had an outdoor shower, which gave us an incredible encounter with monkeys while we showered in the afternoon! Guests can also opt to stay overnight in the treehouse, giving uninterrupted views of the game reserve without even leaving their bed.

Guests start the day with a hot drink and snack in the communal lounge, before setting out on jeeps into the park. During the game drives, the guide and tracker treat guests to their knowledge of the animals and the park itself. You could be lucky enough to see all of the Big 5 in the reserve, as well as wild dogs,  hippos  and hundreds of bird species too. After spending the morning spotting wildlife, guests return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast cooked fresh by the staff, and then spend the afternoon relaxing in the lodge and eating lunch before another game drive in the evening. During this evening game drive, the staff lay on sundowner drinks and snacks overlooking the waterhole, while you listen out for lions roaring in the distance. After the sun has set, the jeeps head back to the lodge for a delicious dinner (vegetarian and vegan options available!) and drinks around the campfire.

The highlight of the lodge is the opportunity to go out on walking safaris, led by a highly experienced tracker who could spot tracks and disturbed plants. This led us to have a  very close encounter with a rhino  that I will never forget!

Bukela Game Lodge in Amakhala Game Reserve, Eastern Cape

If you are planning on going on a wildlife safari in South Africa and want to experience eco-luxury at its best, you need to visit Amakhala Game Reserve on the Eastern Cape and  stay at Bukela Game Lodge . Bukela Game Lodge offers beautiful glamping tents complete with a queen sized bed, fireplace and private terrace.

The common areas are beyond cozy and it won’t be long before you feel right at home. In addition to a pool and cocktail lounge, Bukela also has a viewing platform with a clear view of a popular wildlife watering hole that giraffes, elephants, zebras and warthogs like to frequent.

Would Be Traveller South Africa Safari Lodges - Bukela Game Lodge at Amakhala Game Reserve in South Africa

Because the hotel is a part of the game reserve, don’t be surprised if you wake up and find that there’s no water – it just means that the cheeky elephants have stopped by overnight, damaged the plumbing and helped themselves to some fresh water! At night, a ranger will also escort you back to your room from the dining room…just in case you run into some animals in the dark. You can’t be more immersed in nature than at Bukela.

Though the rooms and facilities are stunning, the absolute best part about Bukela is the twice-daily game drives with their experienced rangers. The rangers at the Amakhala Game Reserve are incredibly knowledgeable and respectful towards the wildlife, and the private 18,000 acre reserve is home to the “Big 5”: lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalo and leopards. There are also plenty of giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, and a variety of antelope species – we even spotted a cheetah with three of its newborn cubs!

Vuyani Safari Lodge in Moditlo Private Game Reserve

The Vuyani Safari Lodge is based within the Moditlo Private Game Reserve in Hoedspruit, just a stone’s throw from Kruger National Park.

The secluded honeymoon suites provide the perfect setting for feeling at one with the reserve and feeling all by yourself so you can enjoy your stay in a lovely private setting.

It’s not all relaxation though. With 2 game drives per day included in the stay, you will be getting 5 am wake-up calls for your morning drive and will go out again at 3 pm for the second drive lasting about 3 hours each (longer if you happen to find one of the big 5 which is likely to happen). The evening drive includes a stop by a lake to watch the sunset whilst sipping a cocktail or a glass of wine.

The reserve has an abundance of wildlife and you will certainly be spoilt with the range of animals you’ll come across, including a friendly pair of Cheetah brothers who were rescued and raised on the reserve. The reserve has the big 5, see if you can spot them all!

The staff here are second to none and cannot do enough for you. You will experience world-class food where the chef will cater for any and all dietary requirements. You’ll never be hungry!

Phinda Mountain Lodge in Phinda Private Game Reserve

Phinda Mountain Lodge has to be one of the best safari lodges in South Africa. Managed by &Beyond (which also manages some beautiful lodges in Botswana !), it is located in Phinda Private Game Reserve, a 3 hours drive from Durban, in KwaZulu Natal. It can be reached by car, but there also are charter flights from all over the country, including Cape Town.

What makes the lodge and Phinda amazing is the safari experience. Here, guests have a chance to see all the Big Five, and to do so in a completely responsible and ethical way. Rangers are accompanied by trackers, and jeeps hardly ever carry more than 6 passengers. No more than 3 jeeps at a time are allowed to view animals, and depending on the animal no more than one. Rangers are perfectly trained to look for the animals and to make sure all guests get the best experience possible.

The lodge itself is a fantastic experience: completely immersed in nature, this is the kind of place where animals roam freely. Nyala love to drink from the guests’ plunge pool (there is one in each room) and even elephants have been caught doing so. The rooms are very large and comfortable, and all feel like a little private enclosure. There is a very comfortable king-size bed, a bathroom with a shower and a separate Victorian-style bathtub, with &Beyond beauty products range. And if the comfort of the room isn’t enough, there even is a spa for incredible treatments.

Would Be Traveller South Africa Safari Lodges - Phinda Mountain Lodge

The view from the dining area is fantastic, and the food served at the property is simply excellent. Breakfast is scrumptious, and so is lunch. Dinner location varies every night, and guests can find themselves dining in the boma or even in the middle of the forest, for an incredible al fresco experience.

All personnel is kind, ready to help and incredibly professional.

Phinda Mountain Lodge certainly isn’t a budget option, but it is worth every penny!

Mala Mala Main Camp in Sabi Sand Game Reserve

Mala Mala is a private game reserve located within the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. At 33,000 acres, it’s the largest and oldest private Big Five game reserve in South Africa. There are three camps on the Mala Mala site: ‘Main Camp’ which caters for fifty guests, ‘Sable’ for families, and ‘Rattrays’ for just sixteen guests, which allows for a more intimate experience.

The private rooms at Mala Mala Main Camp are designed like a traditional South African hut complete with a huge bed, workspace, outdoor shower and unfenced deck outside to watch for wildlife. Not that there will be much time spent in camp instead of out in the wilderness!

Would Be Traveller South Africa Safari Lodges - Mala Mala

Sabi Sand shares 19kms of unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park, allowing wildlife to move freely between the two. It meant that our sightings are basically constant, whether it was a group of thirteen hyenas bathing in a watering hole, a troop of baboons racing along the riverbank, a tree filled with vultures or even the white rhino we spotted at the gates of Mala Mala on our way back home. If you’re looking for a luxurious safari experience, Mala Mala is a great choice!

Mala Mala is a 40-minute jeep ride from Skukuza Airport.

Naledi Bushcamp just outside Kruger National Park

Located in a private game reserve on the edge of Kruger National Park, Naledi Bushcamp is that rare safari lodge – small, luxurious and affordable. The camp only has three suites, but some have more than one bedroom so at most there are 11 people staying at once. Rooms have private terraces and some come with outdoor showers or plunge pools. And because you’re right out in the bush the animals often come to you – you may even have monkeys making a dive for your lunch one day!

Would Be Traveller South Africa Safari Lodges - Naledia Game Lodge

The day starts with a 5 am wake-up call before a three-hour morning game drive in an open-top jeep. After a big breakfast, there’s free time to relax by the pool or find a quiet spot to curl up with a book. Or Naledi offers a few different activities. There’s a walking safari or a trip to a hide where you can watch birds and giraffes at the watering hole while sipping on a G&T. After lunch, there’s more free time before the afternoon game drive which includes sundowner drinks and snacks, followed by drinks by the campfire and a three-course dinner outside by candlelight.

The food is a real highlight at Naledi, with lots of fresh produce and local dishes, ending up with a big braai on the last night. The staff help makes it memorable too – each night a different member of staff eats dinner with the guests so you can find out more about their lives. There’s a really friendly ethos and lots of special little touches that make it feel luxurious. And all your food and activities are included in the price, so the only extras are alcohol and tips.

Safari Lodges and Camps Explained

Open the curtains to a herd of buffalo; admire silhouetted elephants while fine dining beneath the moon; drift off to the sound of nature’s lullaby…lodges and camps aren’t just places to stay, they’re an integral part of the experience. Africa’s unique accommodation ensures that the safari never stops and you’re going to love the relaxed evenings, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the wild.

There are Plenty of Accommodation Options

Accommodation is a wonderful and often unexpected treat in Africa. Lodges and camps blend seamlessly into their surroundings and their non-obtrusive style ensures that wildlife isn’t scared off. Often they use the natural surroundings as unique features; we can recommend some beautiful tree houses, or luxurious camps forged from granite boulders in remote Kenya.

The setting is always exquisite and the views defy the imagination. Some are perched high above the landscape and you can really savour the scale of Africa. Many overlook permanent water, either a river or a waterhole. Every animal must come to drink so you enjoy a whole procession of wildlife when you’re relaxing at the camp or lodge. Evenings are the most popular time of day for the animals to quench their thirst, so you’ll be lounging on the balcony admiring the show.

Boutique and Unique Properties

Safari accommodation is both the compliment and the contrast to a day of exploring; you still get to enjoy the animals, yet there’s a luxury and serenity to bring you down from the adventure. You’ll even be able to lie on the bed and enjoy the wildlife, sometimes by sight and definitely by sound.

Always expect space and seclusion. And always expect something unique. Camps and lodges have been boutique since way before boutique became a buzzword. We love how everywhere you stay has something memorable about it, whether that’s an outdoor shower overlooking hippos, a decadent deck for watching elephants, or having a massage while admiring migrating zebra. Often the accommodation is so good you’ll happily spend the whole day just sitting back and taking it all in.

One of a Kind Designs

Design is also unique. Some have an old-world charm, evoking the sense of the explorers from the early 1900's. Others showcase contemporary African style, with outlandish art or opulent wooden fittings. At certain camps you have a Masai or Samburu warrior accompanying you when walking around the open grounds, while at others there are massage therapists waiting to knead out any travel aches.

Our accommodation picks are luxurious

We only recommend camps and lodges that meet certain standards for comfort and luxury. They provide you with a private space, often with a personal deck or lounge area for relaxing. You’re never squashed next to another tent or room as all camps have seemingly endless wild grounds. For honeymooners we know some outstanding camps where private rooms are accessed on bridges over the floodplains or ladders into the forest canopy.

Communal lounges and decks are where you can meet other visitors and really savour the grandeur of the settings. As most camps are on a small scale, there’s always a friendly and inclusive atmosphere, especially when everyone is sharing their safari tales around the fire.

Lodges, camps, mobile camps? There are some specific differences. Lodges are permanent structures and can come with salubrious extras, like private plunge pools or spa facilities. You can think of them as luxury hotels in the wild, complete with everything you’d expect from a four or five-star establishment. Some have electric fences to keep the wildlife from getting too close and most have magical views.

Lodges vs Camps

Our passion for Africa helps us recommend some outstanding lodges all over the continent. If you’re a little apprehensive about accommodation in Africa, then a lodge makes a great first stop as it gently eases you into the experience. Remember, safari first developed as a luxurious travel experience, so it’s always had an infrastructure that caters to discerning needs. Many of the lodges have been around for decades and have pioneered the modern safari experience.

Camps are smaller, enabling them to be situated in the areas that are richest in wildlife. We love the enchantment of a safari under canvas and the opportunity to immerse all your senses in the landscape. Canvas walls enable you to hear everything and wild Africa creates a spectacular song; the drumbeat of hooves, lion roars, elephants trumpeting and sporadic calls echoing from the trees.

Most luxury camps aren’t that much like typical camping trips. They usually have large en-suite bathrooms, featuring Western-style toilet seats and some fancy extras. The locals have devised ingenious ways to get you a hot shower in the bush, piping the water from a roaring fire straight into your bathroom. Don’t be put off Africa by thoughts of the bathroom. You’ll be astonished at how good they are. And for those who like a bath with a view, we can recommend some private outdoor bathrooms that fully immerse you in nature.

Here’s a general guide on what to expect:

Luxury Eco Tented Camp These camps have minimum impact on the environment, providing basic tents with solar power, tarpaulin floors, bucket showers, and simple furnishings. Eco camps can also be mobile which means they move with the animals and are usually private. Luxury Tented Camp Permanent or semi-permanent camps, offering canvas tents with semi-solid flooring and upgraded furnishings. These are intimate camps, with usually no more than 15 tents. Luxury Tented Lodge Modern, permanent camps featuring structured tents with hard wooden flooring and canvas walls. These camps usually have running showers, and sometimes feature a swimming pool.   Luxury Lodge The most luxurious option, these lodges offer permanent solid rooms and suites. Lodges can have bigger occupancies, and usually feature a communal swimming pool and a spa.

Elephants drinking from the swimming pool? Honeymoon seclusion and champagne picnics? Somewhere for the children to run free? We understand that everyone has their own tastes and expectations. Working with the full range of camps and lodges ensures we can tailor a holiday that perfectly suits your needs and desires.

Luxury safari lodges in South Africa…

Nottens Bush Camp

Sabi Sands, South Africa

Nottens Bush Camp exterior shot

If you are looking for a really special stay during your safari in South Africa, you should consider Nottens Bush Camp in Sabi Sand Reserve. It is one of the most luxurious safari lodges in South Africa.

The lodge has, unlike many others, no fence and no electricity so you are really staying in the bush (in one of the nine exclusive, private suites).

A guard brings you to your room after dark and we experienced why they do so. One night we almost stumbled over a hyena on our way to our room.

We were so shocked and happy that we had a guard with us. Another night my parents woke up and heard a strange noise in front of their room.

They got out of bed to take a look and there was an elephant eating the plants that stood on their porch.

From your room in African style, you are overlooking an open area with a waterhole, so sit on your porch and enjoy the panoramic views and the wildlife passing by. You will see zebra, elephants, antelopes, and many other animals pass by.

Nottens Bush Camp is one of the original game lodges in South Africa and is known for its highly experienced rangers. and the area is great for spotting leopards.

This family-owned lodge goes the extra mile. After our first safari, we entered our room. All the candles and lanterns were burning, the bathtub was filled, rose leaves everywhere and a bottle of South African Vonkelwijn (champagne) was waiting for us.

In the evening all the guests are sitting at a big table to share the most thrilling stories about their safari.

They organize two game drives a day. One at 05.30 in the morning and one at 15.30 in the afternoon. In between those safaris you can relax beside the pool or enjoy a massage at the Nature Spa.

Sabi Sands is also home to Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge which is one of the most family-friendly safari lodges in South Africa .

Phinda Mountain Lodge

Phinda Game Reserve, South Africa

luxurious private pool at phinda mountain lodge

Phinda Game Reserve , in KwaZulu Natal, is home to some of the most beautiful, luxurious lodges in South Africa.

The best by far is Mountain Lodge. As the name says, this is located in such a way as to afford beautiful views across the bushveld to panoramic mountains.

The lodge is blissfully isolated on top of a hill. Once there, you will walk to the common areas where you will find the dining area, where a decadent breakfast and lunch, as well as afternoon tea are offered every day.

So much care is taken in the selection of the ingredients that you even have a choice of several types of coffee and roasts. The common area is also where the bar is located, with a seating area directly facing the mountains, for incredible views.

On the way to your room, you will find the beautiful pool and the spa, perfect for a relaxing afternoon – before you drive away on one of the game drives.

Rooms are incredibly comfortable, with large beds with a pillow menu; a sitting area with a fridge and all sorts of drinks and snacks.

There is a deck with a plunge pool – a favorite of local wildlife which is free to roam the grounds. It is not uncommon to spot nyalas and at times even elephants drinking from the pool!,

There is also a very spacious bathroom with a large shower and a Victorian-style bathtub.

At Phinda Mountain Lodge you will feel welcome, pampered and you will be able to fully relax while enjoying nature and the unique wildlife of this part of the country.

Singita Sweni Lodge

  • Kruger National Park, South Africa

Contributed by sustainable travel bloggers Oksana & Max from Drink Tea & Travel

Singita sweni luxurious safari lodge

Singita Sweni

Located in Kruger National Park,  Singita Sweni Lodge  epitomizes the definition of a lux eco-safari stay.

The lodge is located on 33,000 acres of exclusive concession land on the banks of the Sweni River. This meant that hippos, crocs, elephants, and other wildlife can often be spotted meandering past the lodge.

Singita Sweni Lodge offers an intimate setting far away from the crowds associated with Kruger National Park .

There are only seven large luxurious suites on-site and each one is designed to bring the outdoors in.

They have large floor-to-ceiling windows, big wooden decks, and modern decor with natural elements incorporated into the design.

For us, one of the highlights of staying at Singita Sweni was their strong focus on sustainability.

They have an ethos of “touching the earth lightly” and their efforts were visible in every element of our stay. All meals are crafted with seasonal produce and sourced from local suppliers.

Plus, Singita Sweni Lodge is involved in a number of conservation and social initiatives in the community. One such project was the creation of their solar power plant. Its implementation has meant the lodge can save close to 1,000 tonnes of carbon emissions a year.

Of course, we also loved the morning and afternoon game drives. We had many wonderful sightings of lions, giraffes, zebras, elephants, buffalos, hippos, waterbucks, and other antelopes.

Plus we came across the most unique sighting of them all – a unique white lion, spotted only in this part of Kruger National Park!

If you are looking into a safari in Africa we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Singita Sweni Lodge for an eco-lux experience. It’s a truly one of a kind destination.

Zebra Hills Safari Lodge

Manyoni Private Game Reserve

Zebra Hills Safari Lodge - super luxury safari lodge

Zebra Hills is nestled in the private game reserve of Manyoni in Zululand, and is a sure shot delight for wildlife enthusiasts.

Being part of a private reserve gives the lodge owners and guides a lot of flexibility in terms of game-watching and safari hours.

This is one of the highlights, alongside the spectacular zebra-themed decor in the bedrooms, common areas, bar, and dining room.

The perks of living in a private reserve are aplenty, but my favorite bit was enjoying traditional braai in the evenings whilst you wait for the lions to come for a refreshing sip of water in the adjoining water hole.

This is the only place where I have watched lions on foot. Yes, that’s right. The waterhole is just across the swimming pool/barbeque area and if you stay put, it is easy to spot a few thirsty beasts loitering around to quench their thirst.

With no restrictions on safari hours, the night safaris offered umpteen nocturnal sightings with our top game sightings of the day being three cheetah cubs on a kill followed by a charging black rhino.

Such sightings are a dream for true wildlife lovers and Zebra Hills, with its ultra-luxury sleeps and skilled naturalists, made our dream vacation come true.

Sabi Sabi Sand Game Reserve in South Africa is also on our list of best safari lodges in Africa.

There are four camps on the property: Bush Lodge, Little Bush Camp, Selati Camp, and Earth Lodge. The latter is the most expensive, with a modern design that seeks to blend in with the surroundings. The favourable time to see animals is during the dry season, which lasts from May to September, so plan your trip around that.

10 Best Safari Lodges Header

Time spent on safari is an integral part of any South Africa holiday , with discerning visitors delighted by the sheer number of incredible safari lodges on offer there. When planning trips, many South Africa safari-goers will automatically gravitate towards the private reserves surrounding the world-famous Kruger National Park , which is renowned for its amazing wildlife and superb range of lodges to complement this.

For those who want to spread their wings a little, there are plenty of other choices to consider.

If you are doing a family holiday to South Africa then the malaria-free reserves of The Eastern Cape , as well as the Madikwe Game Reserve in the North-West province also blend luxury with wonderful wildlife viewing and world-class guides.

Further east, the reserves of KwaZulu-Natal are amongst the finest in the country and have a superb array of wildlife to see, allied with the fact that the reserves of the area were the first in the world to focus on rhino conservation.

Wherever you choose to go, out experts will be able to recommend the best lodge for you, but here are what, in our opinion, are the 10 finest lodges in the country and should feature high on any traveller’s list, perfect for a luxury South Africa holiday.

Phinda Rhino And Lion

1. Royal Malewane

When we are asked the question “what is the best safari lodge in South Africa?” it has hard to not immediately respond with the answer of Royal Malewane. Guests staying at the main lodge can choose between the beautifully designed luxury suites, all of which have their own unique style, antique furnishings and private swimming pools, or the sprawling royal suites which are even more spacious with two bedrooms, catering for both families and groups of friends travelling together. Even more luxurious are the luxury farm suites, a more modern take on safari rooms, but complete with the traditional touches and private pools that make Royal Malewane so enduringly popular.

Larger groups are able to book the Farmhouse on an exclusive basis, ensuring a private chef, housekeeping team and guides, or plump for the outstanding Africa House, one of the continents most iconic and desirable places to stay. Hosting up to 12 guests, this beautifully designed villa is crammed with owner Liz Biden’s most treasured furnishings and artwork. A stunning swimming pool overlooks the bushveld of the Thornybush Game Reserve and the world-class guiding team is on hand to ensure an unparalleled wildlife experience is enjoyed by all guests. Nothing is left to chance at Royal Malewane, guests’ every needs are planned from well before they arrive and the on-site team are on hand 24 hours a day to ensure no-one wants for anything from the moment they arrive to the sad time that they say farewell.

2.) Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge

The premier offering from the Sabi Sabi stable of lodges, the stunning Earth Lodge is one of the most uniquely designed properties in all of South Africa, offering its guests the best of everything that visits to the country has to offer. The main lodge, as well as the suites, have all been built out of baked earth and straw, so their construction was completely eco-friendly and lends a unique purple-brown hue to the buildings. The vast suites have their own indoor sitting areas, huge beds and gloriously appointed en-suite bathrooms with luxury toiletries provided. There is a private outside area with huge comfy sofas, a hanging chair and swimming pool – the perfect place to relax in the afternoons and have some well-earned down time. The main area is a huge open-plan dining and indoor lounge area and the cuisine is amongst the finest any lodge in Africa has to offer.

Chef swap programmes with renowned London restaurants have helped to develop unique and innovative menus, accompanied by a vast wine list which boasts some of South Africa’s finest vintages. The bar is made from a huge piece of driftwood, with bar tenders proudly serving South African wines, craft beers and a huge array of spirits. Mix all of these factors with the outstanding guides and superb game viewing for which the Sabi Sand is renowned and you have a truly incredible place to spend a few days in the bush.

3. Singita Bolders

For many years now Singita has been renowned for offering the finest safari experiences that Africa has to offer, with painstakingly designed, impeccably run and gloriously located lodges throughout the continent. Safari aficionados gently argue about which of their lodges is “Number One” but for us it is hard to beat their Sabi Sand lodge Singita Boulders. Found in one of South Africa’s prime game viewing areas, a private reserve bordering the Kruger National Park, the lodge offers an unrivalled game viewing experience in the company of some of the country’s best guides. Big cat sightings, especially leopard, are outstanding here, whilst resident packs of wild dog move through the reserve and guides will always keep an eye out for them. The lodge overlooks a sweep of the Sand River, offer breathtaking sunsets from the sprawling deck and infinity pool.

The lounge, bar and dining area is an amazing place to relax, with outstanding food, a wonderful wine collection and unique cocktails served throughout the day. The spa offers an extensive range of treatments for individuals and couples – a lovely way to break up a day in the bush. The suites are amongst the most luxurious anywhere in Africa, with curtain-encased four poster beds, indoor sitting areas, beautifully-appointed an-suite bathrooms and private decking areas complete with rim flow swimming pools. If you love the finer things in life and have an appreciation for some of the most extraordinary wildlife sightings anywhere on Earth then Singita Boulders is without doubt the place for you.

4. The Outpost

Unique and innovative design has taken a while to take hold in the safari lodge world, with most operators preferring to stick with traditional styles and design. Tucked away in a private concession in the far north of the Kruger National Park, The Outpost proudly broke this mould, offering guests who make the journey up here a truly unique and innovative safari experience. The suites are built on a hillside, hidden from one another by the bushveld and built “side-on” so wherever you are in the suite you get the amazing bush views. Indeed, the fronts of each room can be fully “rolled-up” to maximise the views. The granite baths have been specially sited to maximise these views, so we highly recommend a post morning game drive bath with the sights and sounds of the bush rolling out in front of you.

When relaxing in the public area guests can choose between the open plan and open-fronted lounge area, which is packed with comfy sofas and private places to hide away, or the beautiful swimming pool area, complete with loungers and staff on hand to serve drinks. The food is outstanding, defying the remote location to offer guests a culinary experience to delight the senses, accompanied by amazing wines from renowned South African vineyards. If unique design is your thing, along with getting away from the crowds then we couldn’t recommend anywhere more than The Outpost – it is truly a sight to behold.

5. Madikwe Safari Lodge

If you are looking for the ultimate in luxury in the Madikwe Game Reserve, then look no further than the amazing Madikwe Safari Lodge. The camp is split in to three “satellite” camps, with one dedicated to families, with the others hosting couples, so you will always be accommodated with like-minded guests, which helps to enhance the experience. The feeling of luxury hits you the moment you arrive at your lodge, with a huge open-sided lounge area filled with deep sofas and bar area to greet you. In the rooms the feeling of luxury continues, with wonderfully comfortable beds, spacious bathrooms with outdoor showers and open decking areas complete with their own plunge pools.

Minibars come filled with an array of drinks and snacks, with the lodge able to offer in-room dining for guests celebrating special occasions. The guides are outstanding, navigating Madikwe’s extensive road network with the utmost authority, giving guests up close and personal with the incredible wildlife that the reserve boasts and telling them all about what they are witnessing. This beautiful part of South Africa has been somewhat bypassed by those looking for luxury, but Madikwe Safari Lodge is undoubtedly one of the leading lodges in the country and always right at the top of our list of places to recommend.

6. Phinda Vlei

When looking for luxury safari lodges, the size of where you stay is always an important factor. Smaller properties mean a more favourable staff to guest ratio, fewer people in game viewing vehicles and more space in which to spread out and relax. With these factors in mind, few lodges are more desirable than the delightful Phinda Vlei Lodge, a 6-bedroom lodge found in the heart of the Phinda Private Game Reserve’s breathtaking belt of sand forest. The elegant lounge area is a wonderful place to relax with comfortable sofas, a bar area and stunning views out in to the forest. Meals focus on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients are served outside, or in the lovely dining room which has a roaring fireplace at one end. The chefs are incredibly innovative and pride themselves in offering some of the finest cuisine of any of the South African lodges.

The suites are a wonderful blend of modern stylings and traditional touches, with the curtain-draped four-poster beds an especially alluring feature. Fully stocked minibars mean that guests are able to take afternoon drinks out on to their verandas which look out in to the eerily beautiful sand forest whilst the sparkling plunge pools are a great place to cool off in the heat of the afternoon. A truly wonderful lodge, Phinda Vlei is perfect for those who like the finer things in life with plenty of privacy and personalised service.

7. Thanda Safari Lodge

When seeking luxury many safari-goers place a premium on space, allowing them to spread out, relax and revel in glorious isolation. When it comes to offering space, nowhere in South Africa does this to the extent of Safari Lodge. The suites are utterly vast, accessed by a raised walkway from the main area with a huge open deck complete with swimming pool, covered day bed and even a private boma for candlelit evening meals the first thing that you see. Sitting back, relaxing on the deck or swimming in the pool and taking in the views over the bush is the perfect way to spend the afternoons. Inside the suites the bedroom and sitting room areas are separated by a roaring fireplace, which is lit for guests on cold winter evenings and is a wonderfully homely feature. The bathrooms have plenty of space, twin vanities and baths that look out through the windows over the bush.

The feeling of space continues in the main area where the large open-plan lounge and bar area leads out on to the decking area, another popular spot to relax in the afternoons and take in the sights and sounds of the bush. A stay at Thanda is a very special experience, with the wide-open spaces of the bush replicated by the design of the lodge to offer one of the most luxurious safari experiences that South Africa has to offer.

8. Tswalu The Motse

One of the (somewhat unfair it must be said) criticisms of safaris in South Africa is that they are too “samey” with similar ecosystems found throughout much of the country, leading to very similar wildlife experiences wherever you go. So, if your idea of luxury is something off the beaten track and truly unique then you should look no further than Tswalu The Motse, a stunning lodge in the heart of the private Tsawlu Kalahari Reserve. Privacy really is the watchword here, with the spacious suites able to host guests throughout the stay, with space for private dining, relaxing in between game drives and enjoying the views out over the desert. That said, the main area of the lodge is wonderfully spacious, with plenty of private nooks where guests can relax, enjoy meals, drinks and the outstanding service for which the lodge is renowned.

The swimming pool is very welcoming – afternoons in the desert can get especially hot, whilst the decking area is great for alfresco meals when the weather allows. The notion of privacy is extended to safari activities, with all guests given their own guide and safari vehicle, meaning they are able to explore the reserve to their heart’s content. Special wildlife sightings here including rhinos, legendary black-maned Kalahari lions and endearing meerkats, all spotted in some of the most mesmerising landscapes that the Rainbow Nation has to offer. This is a very special place indeed, the ideal spot to round off any journey to South Africa – undoubtedly one of its crown jewels.

9. Shamwari Eagle’s Crag

South Africa’s Eastern Cape has long been beloved of visitors to South Africa for the safari element of their trips and being malaria free with a pleasant climate and an easy drive from another popular tourist area, The Garden Route, it is easy to see why. For a long time it did lack the really “uber-luxury” lodges that draw visitors to South Africa and was perhaps missing out the visitors who wanted something truly special to stay accordingly. In recent years that has all changed, thanks in the main to the massive investments the world-famous Shamwari Game Reserve, home to the Born Free Foundation, made in their lodges and safari offering. Their programme of improvements has allowed them to compete on an even footing with other lodges across the country and nowhere embodies their bold vision better than the gorgeous Eagle’s Crag. Tucked away at the base of jagged hillsides where eagles are known to nest, it is a wonderfully modern take on safari lodges, with lots of dark woods, private spaces to eat and relax and open sides to maximise the incredible views.

The food is outstanding, amongst the finest in the country with bold and innovative menu choices, alongside traditional favourites, complemented by a dream-like wine list. Exquisite bedrooms welcome guests when they get back from game drives, with light, modern furnishings, plenty of space and a lovely outdoor decking area, complete with a sparkling plunge pool which is a wonderful addition to the lodge. Those who want the convenience of a safari on the Eastern Cape, but with luxuries that other areas of the country are renowned for need look no further than the glorious re-invention of Eagle’s Crag.

10. Kwandwe Ecca Lodge

When planning family holidays to South Africa safaris are always an important element of the trip, but often there are not the same number of luxury options that visitors travelling has couples have to choose from. One of the long-standing exceptions to this has been the outstanding Kwandwe Ecca Lodge, a luxury family-friendly lodge in the heart of the exclusive Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, a remote parcel of land in the rolling hills of the Eastern Cape. Guest staying here can expect all of the luxuries associated with modern safari lodges – spacious rooms, the finest linens, private plunge pools and stunning views. Combine these with a beautiful main area that boasts a stunning swimming pool, incredible cuisine and top-notch service, anyone staying at Kwandwe will want for nothing throughout their stay.

It is undoubtedly the dedication to offering the ultimate family safari experience that elevates Kwandwe in to the upper echelons of South African safari lodges. The three family suites allow parents bring children of all ages to the lodge. Safari times and lengths are tailored to ensure that families can all enjoy their game viewing together, but there is also a babysitting service to ensure adults can enjoy longer game drives should they wish. Children can learn to cook with the chefs, acquire animal tracking skills or simply enjoy a film and popcorn should they wish. Meal times can also be staggered, meaning the entire safari experience is optimised and no-one from the youngest to oldest guest misses out on anything they want to do.

‘Vulture Culture’: More than just your typical safari experience

Vulture restaurant … Tour guide Moses Garira feeds vultures at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge recently.

Deep inside the heart of the Zambezi National Park, against the stunning backdrop of the thundering “smoke” of the Victoria Falls, lies the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge.

Here, in this seemingly serene park teeming with wild fauna, is a story that goes beyond your typical safari experience.

It’s a story about the delicate balance between tourism and the unwavering commitment to conservation. It is about the silent heroes of the ecosystem.

Standing tall and proud, one of the lodge’s guides Moses Garira, has a passion for wildlife conservation that burns brightly. But a special species of interest close to his heart is often misunderstood and maligned, but plays a crucial role in the ecosystem: the vulture.

It’s 1pm, and Garira leads guests to the “vulture restaurant” in the bushes below, a stone’s throw away below this iconic tourist resort.

His voice carries a sombre undertone when he speaks of the plight of these endangered species. They are misunderstood because they are believed to be mythical by the locals and maligned because they are loathed by wildlife poachers.

But unbeknown to many, these majestic birds act as nature’s sanitation crew, cleaning up decomposing carcasses, hence prevent the spread of diseases.

However, their effectiveness in quickly spotting a carcass makes them unwitting victims of poachers.

Poachers, desperate to conceal their crimes, lace carcasses with poison, a tactic that tragically claims the lives of nature’s health workers.

Poisoning has had a tragic toll on their numbers.

This is exacerbated by the fact that vultures have a long gestation period – they only hatch two chicks per year.

In order to protect these natural health workers, Victoria Falls Safari Lodge has devised a novel vulture protection strategy by creating a “vulture restaurant”, drawing up to 200 vultures at a time and serving up leftover meat.

This is under its long-running conservation programme, the Vulture Culture Experience, as a way to save this endangered bird species.

This ensures their survival and, in turn, safeguards the delicate balance of the ecosystem.

At the vulture restaurant, Garira explains how vultures are silent sentries of the wild when they circle above a dead animal as this alerts rangers.

“In Victoria Falls, we mostly have the white-backed vultures and the hooded vultures, and studies have been done to ascertain why vulture population has dropped year in year out and, unfortunately, it has been discovered that vultures are facing a variety of human created challenges,” Garira said.

According to a report by the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust, poachers have recently gotten increasingly skilled in their illegal wildlife trophy hunting, substituting less obvious weapons like cyanide and agricultural poisons for rifles.

The death of hundreds of vultures by a single poisoned elephant can have catastrophic cascade effects on vulture populations.

Garira added that sometimes the use of poison is not targeted at the vultures, but by people targeting predators that are killing their beasts.

“Some of the farmers contribute to the decimation of the vulture population as well; when a farmer finds that one or two of its beasts were killed by predators they think of eliminating those predators by lacing poison in the leftover carcasses so that when those predators come to finish eating their kill, they will feed off the poison and die,” he said.

“Sometimes they do not fall for the trap, so the vulture locates the carcass and feeds off it and dies, meaning humans have the potential to wipe out these endangered species,” he added.

The Vulture Culture Experience is a big hit with visitors to this premier resort town since it allows them to see vultures up close and learn about their ecological significance and the threats to their survival.

The tale of the vultures at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge is a important reminder of how intertwined all species are in nature and how crucial it is to preserve them, regardless of how small or big they may appear.
