Day Trip from Munich to Zugspitze, Germany’s Highest Peak

February 2, 2020

As the train chugs and makes its way along snowy wonderlands passing by the traditional Bavarian houses, forest covered in mist, snowy white fields, and trees blanketed with a fresh layer of snow; all you can do from the coziness of your train is gaze out and marvel at the breathtaking scenery. Want to know more about this amazing Alpine experience in Germany? Let’s take you on a day trip from Munich to Zugspitze, Germany’s Highest Peak.

Your journey to the highest peak of Germany starts with boarding the cogwheel train that takes you all the way up to the Zugspitzplatt and then hopping on to a cable car or continuing the journey that takes you all the way up to the top of Germany. The cable car is the faster option, so opt for the cable car if you have limited time on hand.

munich to zugspitze tour

Located south of the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Zugspitze  stands tall at 2962 meters, is part of the Zugspitze massif and there are many other peaks and plateaus nearby. One of them is Zugspitzplatt which is a high karst plateau dotted with numerous caves. Zugspitze is famous as Germany’s highest peak. It was first climbed in 1820 by Josef Naus.

There are three glaciers, including the two largest in Germany: the Northern Schneeferner with an area of 30.7 hectares and the Höllentalferner with an area of 24.7 hectares. The third is the Southern Schneeferner which covers 8.4 hectares.

How to reach Zugspitze

munich to zugspitze tour

Day trip from Munich to Zugspitze is very popular. Trains from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen are convenient and run hourly. It takes 2 hours to reach Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Right next to the Garmisch station, you have the Zugspitze Bahn(station). The train goes to Grainau, Eibsee, and all the way up to the top of the peak.

munich to zugspitze tour

There are two options –

Option 1: Take the cable car from Eibsee straight up to the top of the peak in just 10 minutes.

Option 2: Continue your journey in the cogwheel train all the way up to the Zugspitzeplatt and the Zugspitze glacier and then from there hop on a cable car which takes you all the way to the summit.

munich to zugspitze tour

Buying an individual pass for the Seilbahn for the cable car that goes from Eibsee to the peak of Zugspitze is around 40 Euros per person. The best thing is to buy the Deutsch Bahn Zugspitze Summer or Winter Combo ticket . This ticket includes trains from Munich to the top of the peak including cogwheel trains and cable cars.

Tip: Don’t forget to check the LIVE  Web Cams for the exact weather conditions before planning your visit.

If you love skiing and want to choose from other options that are available. Do check the prices of day passes at their official site.

Cable Car from Eibsee

As mentioned earlier, you can opt for the cable car from Eibsee. It is beautiful to see the entire façade of the mountain from the glass-clad cable cars that can hold up to 120 people. The cable car that was opened in 2017 is one of a kind experience. It is the world’s longest free span at 3,213 m offering breathtaking views of the idyllic Lake Eibsee, Alpspitze, and Waxensteine.

THINGS TO DO IN ZUGSPITZE

Apart from taking in the amazing views from the summit, don’t forget to enjoy cuisine from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy and wash it all down with a German beer at the highest Biergarten of Germany at the super cool Panorama 2962   restaurant. It offers impressive views of the valley with panoramic glass windows to take it all in.

Here is a list of things that you can do in Zugspitze.

  • Glacier Hike
  • Toboggan Run
  • Snowboarding
  • Stay at Iglo village in winter
  • Münchner Haus (only open in summer)
  • Visit Germany’s highest church
  • Zugspitze-Exhibition

What to Pack

In winter make sure you are dressed well as the temperature drops below zero near the summit. A good winter jacket, boots, gloves ( a must), beanies, hand warmers, scarf, sunglasses and don’t forget to wear your thermals. Make sure you also carry your power bank and extra battery for your camera. There are power sockets at the summit near the lift in case you are out of your phone battery.

You don’t need winter jackets and boots in summer though but make sure you wear comfortable shoes for walking and wear a light jacket.

I’m a complete wimp when it comes to heights, so I’m glad to read this vicariously through your post! I do, however, like the look of the views from the cable car, and in all that snow too! Thanks for the tip on getting the combo ticket, that sounds like a good deal.

February 3, 2020 at 6:27 pm

I like your winter photos, the contrast of the red jacket and white snow. It is excellent. I want to take a cable car to the top. Views are breathtaking. And would like to eat dinner in the Panorama restaurant. For sure, I would like to make a glacier hike.

' src=

February 3, 2020 at 8:56 pm

I love your photos! The view from the cable car looks amazing. I haven’t experienced snow or winter yet but hopefully someday.

February 4, 2020 at 7:36 am

This sounds a lovely trip I’d like to do. Everything looks so pretty in the snow and the views must be spectacular especially if you opt to take the cable car. I think I’d enjoy the sledding before heading inside for some food and beer. I like the idea of extending the trip with a stay at the Iglo village.

I am heading to Munich this summer and I am so thankful for your blog because now I have the idea of what to do while I will be in Munich for a week. I will surely take a day trip to this wonderful Zugspitze. Thanks for sharing information about what to pack and how to reach there. I will prefer a cable car over a cogwheel train for killer views.

' src=

February 4, 2020 at 2:52 pm

This is such a beautiful trip. I felt I was there. All my trips to Europe have been in summer and your post makes me experience during winters.

' src=

February 4, 2020 at 9:41 pm

Talk about a winter wonderland! I was recently in Munich but wasn’t aware of this area. The cable car ride sounds fabulous. I would love to give the toboggan run a go and stay at the igloo village

' src=

February 6, 2020 at 1:27 am

Your photos in Zugspitze feels like a setting in Game of Thrones it’s just so surreal. I would take the train option though to head there at least there’s lesser time on a cable car as I freak out with cable cars. And oh the church would be a great addition in exploring this wonderful scenery.

' src=

February 6, 2020 at 12:14 pm

Now that is quite a stunning journey. The whole cable car ride must have been something . I wouldn’t mind the cogwheel train too, bet you can see some other aspects of this winter wonderland. I am all for that toboggan…actually you look quite cute pulling it 😀 Loved your pictures as usual. Good and useful tips about how to get there, where to stay etc.

' src=

February 6, 2020 at 10:33 pm

Did you really ride that wooden sled??? SO cute!! I love Germany so much, but I’ve never been in the winter. The Iglo village sounds fun to explore, too. I really want to go to Europe in the winter sometime. I love the boots and coat combo, too. Adorable!

' src=

February 7, 2020 at 8:06 am

All of this looks so so dreamy. Am simply in love with those pictures that you managed to take from the cable car. Looking at your photos, and seeing the amount of fun you guys had, I also want to experience this for myself. Haven’t been to Germany yet, but now I will visit Germany specially in the winters, and experience this for myself too.

' src=

February 7, 2020 at 1:41 pm

I love Europe in winters the most. Everything looks like a winter wonderland. I just returned from Switzerland and it was as beautiful as your pictures. Too bad I didn’t carry my red jacket as you did 😛 I love the cogwheel trains that take you to the top of the mountain. I am definitely putting this trip for my next year. I loved the pics you took from the cable car.

' src=

February 7, 2020 at 3:16 pm

Your post made me nostalgic as I loved Zugpitze from Munich and also enjoyed the cable car ride. Cable car from Eibsee is the beautiful part of this tour as the view from top is really splendid. I too had hot chocolates at Panorma 2962 restaurant with view of snowy mountains. Staying at Igloo village in winter would also be nice to do here.

' src=

February 9, 2020 at 2:40 am

Wow that view from the cable car is breathtaking. I am definitely not a person who loves snow. But I can do it for a day or so if we are going on a trip like this. It looks like a winter wonderland . Thanks for sharing all the important information

munich to zugspitze tour

The Zugspitze and Upper Bavaria

An uplifting day on the zugspitze and in the bavarian alps.

We go to the Top of Germany on this tour via a modern cable car up to the top of the Zugspitze mountain. At just shy of 3,00o meters (9,700 ft), the views from the summit are spectacular – one can see all the way to Italy on a fine day. On the visitors platform there are lookout platforms facing every direction. Up top there are a few restaurants, including Germany’s highest Biergarten, a museum, a weather station and you can even cross the border at the top, as part of the Zugspitze is in Austria. We can also visit the bowl, which is a ski area in winter. Although there are three ways to get up & down the mountain, we now almost exclusively use the record-setting new cable car from the Eibsee.

We have several nice options for the rest of the day, including spending time at the Eibsee (Lake Eib), visiting the resort town Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Linderhof Palace, Oberammergau, or even riding an alpine coaster or a short hike through a dramatic gorge.

Garmisch is a fantastic Pure Bavarian village and the host site of one of the four original alpine ski races. It is a lovely stroll down the main car-free street amongst the wonderfully painted buildings. Oberammergau is another lovely town known for the Passion Play and wood carvings. Linderhof Palace is extravagant and secluded, and a true highlight. It is where King Ludwig II spent most of his time. The enchanting gardens are a delight.

If you are nature lovers, we can spend some time at the Eibsee or walk the loggers’ trail through the exciting Partnach Gorge. Another action activity is riding an alpine coaster, which is basically your own private sled on rails (or on a track). This is a great family activity.

View of the Zugspitze (right peak) from the Kreuzeck Bahn

Tour Highlights

  • Trip up to the Zugspitze via modern cable car (the historic cog-wheeled train is a slower option)
  • Spectacular panoramic views over the top of the Alps.
  • “Cross the Border” between Germany and Austria on top of the mountain
  • Visit the bowl, get in the snow and maybe even sled a bit
  • Background information on the Alps and Bavaria
  • Plenty of time for lunch and some shopping

Tour Details

  • Door-to-door transportation to and from your hotel or designated place
  • Start time is usually 8:30 or 9:00 and we arrive back in Munich around 6 or 6:30 pm
  • Experienced, knowledgeable and friendly driver/guide
  • Simple and transparent pricing with no hidden costs

Tour Options

  • The fabulous Linderhof Castle, the home of King Ludwig II of Bavaria
  • A stop in the center of the resort town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen

For families and active travelers:

Zugspitze: The most important information at a glance

  • Distance from Munich:  approx. 90 kilometers
  • Altitude:  2,962 meters above sea level
  • Mountain railroads:  Bayerische Zugspitzbahn, rack railroad and cable car - in 45 minutes to the top station at 2,588 meters
  • Special features:  Hiking and climbing, stop for refreshments at the summit restaurant, glacier ski area with 20 kilometers of slopes, toboggan runs for children and adults, historic rack railway
  • Requirements for the ascent:  surefootedness and no fear of heights
  • Tourist traffic:  On weekends when the weather is nice it can be very crowded.

Panorama, alpine pastures, mountain sports: the highlights for visitors

  • As the highest mountain, the Zugspitze offers a  spectacular panorama  in good weather conditions: On the ApspiX viewing platform, you can look out over the Zugspitze, the Waxensteine, the Alpspitz north face and down into the Höllental.
  • Not far from the top station, visitors* can enjoy local delicacies in the  Panorama Lounge  or in the Sonnalpin glacier restaurant.
  • Among the highlights of Zugspitze are the many  sports on offer  in summer and winter: Climbing, paragliding, trail running, skiing and snowboarding, tobogganing are just some of the many opportunities for sports on the mountain.

With the cable cars up the Zugspitze

Skigebiet Zugspitze Gondel

The  historic Zugspitz cogwheel cable car  was put into operation in 1930. It starts in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and stops at several stations along its route: Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Hausberg, Kreuzeck, Alpspitzbahn, Hammersbach, Grainau, Eibsee. The terminus of the rack railroad is the glacier, the Zugspitzplatt. From there, the glacier cable car will take you to the summit.

The  Zugspitze cable car  starts at the Eibsee and takes you to the summit of the Zugspitze or directly from the summit to the valley. The valley station of the  Tyrolean Zugspitze cable car , also a gondola lift, is located in Ehrwald/Obermoos.

The  Zugspitz Gletscherbahn  connects the Zugspitzplatt with the summit. It is a cable car that was put into operation in 1992. It covers a distance of 1,000 meters in length and 360 meters in altitude in just 4 minutes.

Hiking through the Reintal or over the Gatterl to the Zugspitze

Zugspitze

It takes about 11 hours through the Reintal valley - it is the easiest but longest route to the Zugspitze. From the ski stadium in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the route first leads through the wild Partnachklamm gorge, then along forest paths to the Bockhütte hut at 1052 meters.

It continues along an easy mountain trail to the Angerhütte (1370 meters), then somewhat steeper uphill to the Knorrhütte. If the tour to the Zugspitze is too much for you in one day, you can spend the night there. Alternatively, a little further on is the Reintalangerhütte, from where it continues onto the wide Zugspitzplatt.

After the Sonn-Alpin station it gets sweaty: over a scree field you reach the summit. The path is partly secured, especially in the upper area. Those who are not quite free from giddiness should end the tour at Münchner Haus.

A shorter alternative is the Gatterlroute: It leads from Ehrwald to the Knorrhütte. From there on, the tour is identical to the Reintal route. The Knorrhütte can be reached from the valley station of the Ehrwalder Almbahn. From the mountain station you continue to the Pestkapelle. There begins the climb to the "Gatterl"- a saddle, which is reached at the end over easy rocks. In this area there are wire rope belays. Then it goes over the Plattsteig to the Knorrhütte. If you still want to shorten the tour, which takes about 7 hours, you can use the Ehrwalder Almbahn to save just under 400 meters in altitude.

Quick check: The most important information about the ascent:

  • Altitude profile:  approx. 1,400 vertical meters
  • Duration:  approx. 11 hours from Reintal, or approx. 7 hours from Gatterl
  • Requirements:  Surefootedness and head for heights

For experienced: Ascent from Höllental and Stopselzieher

Zugspitze Hoellental und Stopselzieher

The tour over the Austrian Schneekar and Stopselzieher is with a good 5.5 hours the shortest way to the Zugspitze, but also very demanding:

From the Eibsee or alternatively from Obermoos, the paths go steeply to the Wiener Neustädter Hütte at 2213 meters. There then begins the via ferrata (difficulty levels A and B) - appropriate equipment is urgently required. Spectacular is the passage of the Stopselziehers - a natural rock tunnel. Through terrain that is secured in many places, the route then leads to the ridge and summit.

The most eexciting ascent is via the  Höllental :

From Hammersbach, the trail leads through the impressive Höllentalklamm gorge, but this can also be bypassed on the Stangensteig trail. At the Höllentalangerhütte, climbers must decide whether to reach the summit in one day or two.

In any case, you should be fit, because after the hut it gets tricky: The "ladder" and the exposed "board" are key passages. The latter is equipped with steel pins as footholds. Over scree it goes to the Höllentalferner, where you need crampons in parts. In addition, you should definitely walk there on a rope because of the danger of crevasses. The summit is then reached via further climbing passages and the ridge. The tour has difficulty level C in some places and is only suitable for experienced mountaineers.

  • Altitude profile:  Stopselzieher approx. 1,730 vertical meters, Höllental approx. 2,200 vertical meters.
  • Duration:  approx. 6 hours from Stopselzieher, or approx. 8 hours from Höllental.
  • Requirements:  Climbing experience, sure-footedness, no fear of heights.

With children on the Zugspitze: Info for families

Zugspitze Familie

  • Can I climb the mountain with children?  The ascent on foot takes about 7 hours and requires a good physical condition (so if in doubt with small children, rather use the cable cars or plan a two-day tour). For the subsequent summit climb, the children must be sure-footed and free from vertigo.
  • Which highlights should the children not miss?  The historic cogwheel railroad, summit adventure trail for kids, ski kids' land and watching athletes* climb and paraglide.
  • Is there a tip for our family hike?  A spectacular panorama without much effort is offered by a ride with the Zugspitzbahnen directly to the summit.

Climbing, paragliding, trail running

Athletes also find ideal conditions on the Zugspitze:

  • High-alpine tours,  via ferratas  and climbing gardens offer a special kind of mountain experience for every level of difficulty.
  • There are take-off sites for  paragliders  on Zugspitze at Osterfelderkopf and Kreuzeck. For experienced flyers, the take-off from the Alpspitz summit is a real highlight.
  • Well-developed trails and hiking paths are the ideal running location for  trail runners  and all this in front of the breathtaking natural scenery of the Zugspitze.

Winter fun on the Zugspitze: skiing and tobogganing

Zugspitze Skigebiet Garmisch

The Zugspitze is also a worthwhile destination in winter, especially for  winter sports  enthusiasts. If the weather plays along,  skiing  fun at Zugspitze even goes from November into May.

There are three slopes for  tobogganing  fun: the toboggan slope at Schneefernerkopf, the Sonnenklar toboggan run and the Wetterwandeck toboggan run. A toboggan run is even possible in summer if there is enough snow: from June to September there is a toboggan run from the Gletschergarten restaurant in the direction of the Zugspitze glacier - the equipment can be rented.

How to get from Munich to Zugspitze

  • By train:  From Munich main station by train to Weilheim, continue by train in the direction of Mittenwald to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and take the Eibsee bus to Zugspitzbahnhof - Grainau (travel time: 3 hours).
  • By car:  Via the A95 motorway to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. In town, the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn is signposted (journey time: approx. 70 minutes).

Nearby destinations

  • The nearby  Eibsee  is one of the most beautiful lakes in Bavaria due to its clear, shimmering green water
  • Waterfalls, narrow stone paths and winding rock faces: the  Partnachklamm  gorge near Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a special kind of natural experience
  • The  Königshaus am Schachen  was built from 1869 to 1872 according to designs by Georg Dollmann and served King Ludwig II as a place of recuperation during his stays in the mountains

He is so well informed and gave us an absolutely amazing tour of the castles and Weiskirche. We have taken other tours in the past, and he was by far the best guide we've ever had. He knew the history of each location and answered all of our questions. We highly recommend Christian if you are considering a tour! Read more Written October 9, 2023
  • ArchAngel521 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles MARVELOUS Experience! Absolutely marvelous experience! We arranged a private tour exactly to our interests. We went to the Alpine Coaster, a thrill for the younger members of our group. Then via Oberamergau, a rolling tour, and to Neuschwanstein. Stefan picked us up directly at our hotel door exactly on time in an immaculate Mercedes-Benz van. He had worked with us personally through the whole process of our changing plans and requirements, pre-arranging reservations and tickets, and making everything run like clockwork. He was extremely knowledgeable about the history of Bavaria, Maximilian II, Oberamergau, and could pretty much answer any question put to him. I'll add that he was an extremely safe driver, and accommodating to our requirements from a child's carseat to handling a folding wheelchair. If you a looking for a private custom tour of Munich, Bavaria, or Salzburg I cannot reccomend Sightseeing-Bavaria Exclusive highly enough!! Read more Written August 8, 2023

Took a Grey Line Tour, which was tremendous as we had a lovely bus and a great tour guide.... the castle is a nice hike up the hill, wonderful views from the walk up, the bridge view is out of this world and a timed entry into the castle for the tour was perfect and not a long wait. A few of the rooms were closed for renovations but the rooms that were completed by Ludwig and shown were stunning!! Just a perfect day trip to see this unfinished masterpiece of King Ludwig. Also nice memories of the Disney movie! Easy trip by a tour bus from Munich. Read more Written July 20, 2023
  • TravelingTiff007 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Catered to what you want I booked this because I wanted to see Neuschwanstein Castle but was not sure how to get there or what else to see. Our guide, Thomas, was informative and very easy to get along with. Since we didn't have a set schedule, he was able to point out a few items not listed on the itinerary, which made for a great time. Thomas even showed us around Munich and circled places on the map for us to see on the remainder of our trip. We enjoyed his stories and was very happy he chose great music on the ride around the (just over) 11 hour tour. Dankeschön, Thomas!! Read more Written May 31, 2023
  • travisl91 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great experience with Christian This tour is pricey but completely worth it. We were picked up from the center of Munich and transported privately in a very comfortable Mercedes van to Lindhoff palace before the tour busses had arrived. Coordinating tickets/time slots/etc at Neuschwanstein can be difficult given how popular it’s become but that was all taken care of for us and our guide Christian made sure we were heading in the right direction at the right time to make sure we made our slot. Christian also was a treasure trove of information about the local area/history/etc. We stopped at a beautiful lake in Austria and a quiet small town with a UNESCO heritage cathedral and small beer garden where there were no other tourists in site other than those that biked there - it was a completely different experience than if we had done it with a large group on a bus. This is definitely the way to see Bavaria from Munich! Read more Written May 28, 2023

  • nad0731 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic time with Sightseeing Bavaria! We had a fantastic day with Sightseeing Bavaria Exclusive! It started out with a prompt hotel pickup by our guide, Thomas, in a clean comfortable car. It was a clear sunny day (apparently this is not typical for this time of year) and the drive was stunningly beautiful. We headed out to the Alpine Coaster. Unfortunately, there was an accident on the way that caused quite a bit of traffic but that ended up working out to our favor because, once the accident cleared, there was hardly a line at the alpine coaster! We had so much fun on our first alpine coaster ride and our guide was a good sport when my sister took the tracks down pretty slowly. He was even kind enough to drop us off to go get in line while he looked for parking. Next, we headed out to Neuschwanstein Castle. Again, our guide dropped us off at the bus stop while he looked for parking and ran up the hill to meet us at the Castle. He took great photos of us on the bridge in front of Neuschwanstein Castle and then escorted us to the meeting point for the Castle tours. He waited outside while we took the tour and then brought us back to the car. On our way back to Munich, we stopped twice at the Pilgrimage Church of Wie, a beautifully well-preserved church, and a gorgeous lake right at sunset. We had a great day with Thomas and highly recommend Sightseeing Bavaria! It was great to have a private guide so we could move at our own pace and we had great conversations throughout the day with Thomas, which allowed us to get a better understanding of Bavarian culture. I will happily use Sightseeing Bavaria the next time I am in the area and recommend you do too! Read more Written November 25, 2022

Getting From Munich to Zugspitze By Train

Train Services | The best way to reach the summit of Zugspitze is traveling with a combination of regional Deutsche Bahn (DB) and Zugspitze trains. DB train runs normally hourly from Munich Hauptbahnhof main train station to Garmisch-Partenkirchen . At peak times, it runs twice per hour. From there, taking the cogwheel Zugspitze train can take you to the Zugspitze glacier and Zugspitzeplatt. There, a further ride with the Gletscherbahn cable car will take you to the summit. Alternatively, it’s also fun to take the Seilbahn cable car by hopping off at Eibsee from the cogwheel train. This will take you less than 10 minutes to reach the summit. Train Tickets | Depending on the season, a combination of DB + Zugspitze trains are available. For an adult ticket during summer is 73Euro, and 65Euro. Updated price info. can be checked on DB website. Combi-ticket for ascent and descent of the Zugspitze trains in conjunction with the cogwheel train, Gletscherbahn, and the Seilbahn is also available. This ticket costs 57Euro in Winter times, and 63Euro during Summer. It’s a good idea to view pricing from the Zugspitze website , as family ticket and single ascent/descent rides are shown there. Train Times | The journey from Munich Hauptbahnhof to Garmisch-Partenkirchen takes about 1.5 hours. Continuing with the cogwheel train to the summit will take around 75mins. If using the Seilbahn cable car transiting from Eibsee will only take 7mins.
