Deep Purple announce Indonesia concert this March

Godbless, who opened for Deep Purple at their landmark 1975 concert, will return for the 2023 concert

Rock legends Deep Purple have announced an Indonesia concert this March as part of their 2023 world tour.

Deep Purple are set to perform at the Edutorium UMS in Surakata, Solo on March 10 for what will be the only concert announced for Southeast Asia so far, with the band having previously revealed four Japan concerts for the tour. Supporting them at the Indonesia concert will be local rock veterans Godbless, who opened for Deep Purple at their landmark 1975 concert in the country.

Several ticket categories have already sold out. Ticketing links for the remaining categories have yet to be released, but tickets for the Green A, Green B and Festival zones are set to go on sale at a later date. Green A tickets will be priced at IDR1,500,000, Green B tickets at IDR750,000, and Festival tickets at IDR1,000,000.

Following the Indonesia concert, Deep Purple are set to embark on a run of four dates in Japan that will see them performing in Tokyo, Hiroshima, Fukuoka and Osaka from March 13 to 19. The group will then embark on the European leg of their tour later this year in June.

No additional Asia tour dates have been announced as of the time of writing.

Deep Purple guitarist Steve Morse officially quit the band in June last year to care for his wife, Janine, who is suffering from aggressive cancer. “I’ll miss everybody in the band and crew but being Janine’s helper and advocate has made a real difference at many key points,” Morse shared in a statement at the time.

“As Janine adjusts to her limitations, she is able to do many things on her own, so we will try to play some shorter nearby concert tours with friends to, hopefully, get both of us out of the house!”

He had previously stepped away from the band in March to care for Janine, though he had shared at the time that he hoped to rejoin the band on tour later.

At the beginning of the Come Taste The Band tour, Deep Purple stopped off in Jakarta to play a show en route to Japan. It did not go well

Deep Purple ’s  Come Taste The Band  album was not an album that took the charts by storm. The only studio collection released by the Mark IV lineup (David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Jon Lord, Ian Paice and incoming guitarist Tommy Bolin), it received unexceptional reviews and crept into the UK Top 20, but worse was to follow as the band went out on the road.

The trek started in the Pacific, where Deep Purple stopped over for a single show in Honolulu on the way to New Zealand. After two shows there, the band crossed the Tasman for a run of eight dates in Australia, and with a quartet of pre-Christmas Japanese shows lined up, the band also accepted an offer from an Indonesian promotor to play a show en route.      

"It was a set-up," Deep Purple tour manager Rob Cooksey told writer Chris Charlesworth in his 1983 book Deep Purple: The Illustrated Biography. " The story from the word go was that we were due to play a theatre in Jakarta that held 7,000 people and, as we were on our way from Australia to Japan and had our own plane, it seemed like a good way to pick up some extra money."

The promoter wired an $11,000 deposit to book the band, but when Cooksey was shown the venue he was in for a surprise. The Senyan Sports Stadium stadium in Jakarta turned out to hold 125,000 people, two nights had been scheduled, the stage was built from orange boxes, and the security detail was provided by the army. Disturbed by the nature of what he found, Cooksey attempted to cancel the event, but was promised that a renegotiation would make him happy. 

The first night proceeded, with Purple playing a set that opened with Burn , included a cover of Hoagy Carmichael's Georgia (On My Mind), and featured the debut performance of Soldier Of Fortune . With 100,000 fans in attendance, Cooksey calculated that the band's gross for the shows should have been in the region of $750,000. And he'd only received $11,000. So he demanded another meeting.

“It started off quite pleasantly and then developed into an argument," said Cooksey. "Then they left me alone. Very soon after that there was an incident on one of the floors and Patsy [Collins, one of the band's personal bodyguards] was killed after falling six floors down a lift shaft. He fell through these central heating and pipes and water ducts right through into the basement but it didn’t kill him instantly. He crawled out and got into a minibus outside the hotel and just murmured 'hospital, hospital'. He died shortly after that."

Cooksey, Glenn Hughes and a second Deep Purple minder known as 'Paddy the Plank', were taken away by police and informally charged in connection to Collins' death, before the latter pair were released in time for the second show, during which riot police armed with machine-guns and fierce dogs attacked and injured 200 fans.

“It’s my opinion it was a set up to get me out of the way,” reported Cooksey. “The band had to play again that night and they were quite literally taken from the hotel at gunpoint and pushed up on to the stage. They let Glenn out to do it but they’d only played for 20 minutes when the place went crazy."

The tour manager remained in jail overnight, and was only released after paying $2000 to retrieve the band's passports, which had been handed over so that copies could be made. Further trauma awaited the band at the airport, where the plane's captain demanded $10,000 so that a punctured tire could be fixed, while Deep Purple's lawyer – freshly arrived from Los Angeles to make sure the band got paid – was allegedly threatened with a machete when he asked for the money, before making his excuses and departing for the first available flight out.

Late Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord was convinced that Collins' death had been no accident. "It appeared that he had fallen down an elevator shaft, but we knew that he was murdered," he told Guitar World in 1999. "It was after that first night that Patsy was murdered. The promoter never paid us. He took all the money and had us deported. He had our tour manager, one of the roadies and our bassist, Glenn Hughes, locked up on suspicion of murder."

In 2015, Hughes announced that he'd return to Jakarta to mark to 40th anniversary of Collins' death and to play a solo show. And four years later, Deep Purple published an updated trailer for an unfinished film about the experience, working title 1975 . It remains unreleased.

"Of course it's nice to come back. A lot has changed in Indonesia since 1975," Gillan said, referring to the year Deep Purple first performed in Jakarta, during which one of their hired bodyguards, Patsy Collins, was killed when he tumbled down an elevator shaft.

ead singer of legendary British rock band Deep Purple Ian Gillan told a press conference in Surakarta, Central Java, on Thursday that after 48 years the band was happy to be playing again in the country.

"Of course it's nice to come back. A lot has changed in Indonesia since 1975," Gillan said, referring to the year Deep Purple first performed in Jakarta, during which one of its hired bodyguards, Patsy Collins, was killed when he tumbled down an elevator shaft. 

Deep Purple is scheduled to stage its live show on Friday night at the Surakarta Muhammadiyah University (UMS) auditorium. 

In a short video posted on the band's social media accounts, Gillan invited President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, known to be an avid rock fan, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo and Surakarta mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka to see the live performance.

Gibran has said that organizers for the show did not provide a free ticket for Jokowi and that he had to purchase it himself.

For the Surakarta gig, Deep Purple will be reunited with Indonesia's longest-running rock band, God Bless, which will open the show. God Bless, fronted by legendary singer Ahmad Albar, opened Deep Purple's gig in Jakarta in 1975.

When asked about sharing the bill with God Bless once again, Gillan said he was thrilled. "It's amazing to be able to see them again here," the 77-year-old singer said.

Deep Purple Konser di Solo 10 Maret, Segini Harga Tiketnya

Grup band rock legendaris Deep Purple akan menyapa masyarakat Indonesia pada 10 Maret 2023 di Edutorium UMS, Solo. Pihak promotor akan menjual 9 ribu tiket.

CEO Rajawali Indonesia selaku promotor konser, Anas Alimi mengatakan tiket akan dijual dalam dua tahap yakni presale dan reguler. Untuk tiket presale akan dijual mulai Minggu (15/1).

"Hari Minggu besok presale tanggal 15 Januari hanya satu hari mulai pukul 09.00 WIB di deeppurpleindonesia.com," kata Anas kepada wartawan usai jumpa pers di Solo, Jumat (12/1/2023).

Sedangkan untuk tiket reguler akan dijual pada Selasa (17/1) sekitar pukul 09.00 WIB. Anas menjelaskan untuk harga tiket mulai dari Rp 500 ribu hingga Rp 2 juta.

"Untuk tiket ada beberapa kategori yakni Festival, Green B, Green A, Purple, dan Super Purple. Khusus untuk tiket kategori purple dan super purple, bisa diperoleh hanya melalui reservasi," ujarnya.

Anas menyebut Indonesia menjadi satu-satunya negara di kawasan Asia Tenggara yang dikunjungi oleh Deep Purple sebelum bertolak ke Jepang. Konser di Solo ini juga sebagai rangka world tour Deep Purple dan juga hadiah untuk hari jadi God Bless.

"Dalam rangka world tour-nya Deep Purple ya. Kami berhasil meminta dia untuk mampir ke Indonesia, dan istimewanya dia tidak mampir ke negara South Asia yang lain. Setelah dari Indonesia langsung ke Jepang," ungkapnya.

Dikutip dari Harian Kompas , 20 November 1975, band legendaris ini dibentuk pada Februari 1968 oleh Jon Lord, Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Paice, Rod Evans, dan Nick Simper.

Dalam perkembangannya, Deep Purple menemukan identitas rock-nya ketika Rod dan Nick digantikan oleh Roger Giover dan Ian Gillan.

Bahkan Guinness Book of World Records pernah menjuluki Deep Purple sebagai band paling bising di dunia.

Dari formasi ini, Deep Purple sukses memadukan instrumen klasik dan rock, seperti yang tercermin dalam albumnya tahun 1970 Concerto for Group and Orchestra dan Gemini Suite Live.

Menjelang 1972, kabar mengejutkan datang setelah vokalis utamanya, Ian Gillan keluar dari Deep Purple.

Gillan merasa tak berkembang ketika bersama band tersebut. Langkah itu kemudian diikuti oleh Roger Glover yang memilih bergabung dengan Nazareth.

Ini menjadi awal mula memudarnya kejayaan Deep Purple akibat konflik internal berkepanjangan.

Ganti vokalis

Pada 1973, posisi vokalis yang kosong sepeninggal Gillan diisi oleh seorang penyanyi David Coverdale.

Sementara kekosongan basis yang ditinggalkan oleh Glover diisi oleh Glenn Hughes yang sebelumnya tergabung dalam band Trapeze.

Dalam sejarahnya, Deep Purple sangat kerap bongkar pasang personel.

Kendati demikian, Deep Purple MK II oleh banyak pengamat dianggap sebagai lineup terbaik dalam sejarah karier mereka.

Harian Kompas , 23 Agustus 2003 memberitakan, pada masa inilah mereka merilis karya trilogi: In Rock (1970), Fireball (1971), dan Machine Head (1972).

Selain itu, single mereka sangat terkenal di dunia, seperti Black Night, Strange Kind of Woman, dan When A Blind Man Cries.

Album konser mereka, Made In Japan , juga menjadi salah satu album tertenar dan terlaris sepanjang sejarah.

Deep Purple Akan Tampil di Solo pada 10 Maret 2023

Deep Purple, band rock legendaris asal Inggris, dipastikan akan manggung di Solo, Jawa Tengah, pada Jumat, 10 Maret 2023.

Konser ini akan diselenggarakan di Edutorium Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta yang berkapasitas maksimal 10.000 penonton dengan kapasitas parkir 330 mobil di lantai dasar, dan 800 mobil di halaman gedung.

“Lokasi ini tentunya sudah menjadi concern kami dalam menjalankan acara konser di dalam gedung. Berbekal beberapa kegiatan akbar juga pernah dilakukan di tempat ini, tentunya dapat menjadi pilihan yang memadai untuk menyelenggarakan acara konser Deep Purple ini,” tutur Ernanto Setiawan selaku Project Manager Deep Purple - World Tour 2023.

DEEP PURPLE Announces October/November 2024 European Tour

One of Britain's most influential bands returns to the road in October and November 2024, as DEEP PURPLE brings the "=1 More Time Tour" to Europe this fall.

In July 2022, guitarist Steve Morse officially left PURPLE to care for his wife, Janine , who was battling cancer. He has since been replaced by McBride .

The =1 More Time Tour takes in five arenas

Rock legends Deep Purple have announced a five date UK tour for this coming autumn.

The =1 More Time Tour opens at Birmingham Resorts World Arena on Monday 4th November and visits London, Leeds and Manchester before concluding at Glasgow OVO Hydro on Sunday 10th November.

Joining Deep Purple at all five arena shows will be the always brilliant Glastonbury rockers Reef.

Tickets to Deep Purple’s =1 More Time Tour go on sale from Planet Rock Tickets at 10am on Friday 22nd March.

The current incarnation of Deep Purple features longstanding members Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Iain Paice and Don Airey alongside guitar maestro Simon McBride , who was recuited to the band’s ranks in 2022 in place of Steve Morse .

Since their inception in 1968, Deep Purple have sold more than 100 million records worldwide.

18 rock bands named after songs by other bands, including deep purple:, judas priest.

British heavy metal legends Judas Priest took inspiration for their brilliant name from the Bob Dylan song 'The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest' from his 1967 album 'John Wesley Harding.' The moniker was the idea of early Judas Priest bassist Brian 'Bruno' Stapenhill who exited the band in 1970 before they had laid down any recordings.

Deep Purple

Initially called Roundabout, the rock legends initially toyed with band names including Orpheus, Concrete God and Sugarlump but eventually settled on Deep Purple; taken from the 1933 Peter DeRose piano composition. The song was a huge favourite of Ritchie Blackmore's grandmother and she would often perform it on piano throughout Ritchie's childhood.

In 1988, Eric Martin, Billy Sheehan, Paul Gilbert and the late-great Pat Torpey named their new band after the Free song 'Mr. Big', which appeared on their breakthrough 1970 album 'Fire and Water'. Mr. Big later covered 'Mr. Big' on their third studio album 'Bump Ahead' in 1993.

After being dismissed from Hawkwind in 1975 following an arrest for drug possession in Canada, Lemmy started his own self-professed "fast and vicious" band and took the name Motörhead from the final song he had penned for Hawkwind just a few months earlier, 'Motorhead'. Two years later, Motörhead re-recorded 'Motorhead' as the opening track on their eponymous debut album.

Originally called Paris upon their formation in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania in 1983, singer Bret Michaels, guitarist Matt Smith, bassist Bobby Dall and drummer Rikki Rockett wisely ditched their tame sounding band name in favour of 'Poison'; a nod to the 1981 track 'Poison' by glam metallers 'Sinner'.

The Scottish hard rock veterans were called the Shadettes upon their formation in the late 1960s but were unhappy with what they perceived to be a 'lightweight' name. They decided to hit a boozer to discuss a new name when 'The Weight' by The Band started playing through the bar's soundsystem. Upon hearing the opening line "I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead" , bassist Pete Agnew suggested 'Nazareth' and the band agreed. The rest, they say, is history.

Danish rockers Volbeat took their name from the 1997 studio album 'Vol.Beat' by singer Michael Poulsen's previous band, the death metal act Dominus.

The Rolling Stones

Founder and original band leader Brian Jones gave The Rolling Stones their moniker after the 1950 Muddy Waters track 'Rollin' Stone'. The fledgling group played their first show as The Rolling Stones on 12th July 1962, at the famous Marquee Club in London.

The idea of former guitarist, singer and co-founding band member Max Cavalera, the Brazilian metallers called themselves Sepultura, which is the Portuguese word for "grave". Max took inspiration from one of his favourite songs, Motörhead's 'Dancing On Your Grave.'

Founded in Oxford in mid-1980s, Radiohead were originally called On A Friday in reference to their music rehearsal day at Abingdon School. When they signed a six-album deal with EMI in 1991, the imprint implored them to change their name and they ultimately took their band name from the song 'Radio Head' from Talking Heads' 1986 album 'True Stories'.

Washington DC punks Bad Brains named themselves after the Ramones track 'Bad Brain', which appears on their 1978 album 'Road To Ruin'.

Stefani Germanotta's stage name is derived from the Queen classic 'Radio Ga Ga'. Producer Rob Fusari claims to have been the person who coined 'Lady Gaga' in the mid-noughties when they worked together.

At The Drive-In

Influential post-hardcore noisemakers At The Drive-In got their moniker from a line in Poison's 1987 single 'Talk Dirty To Me' – "Cause baby we'll be / At the drive-in / In the old man's ford / Behind the bushes / Till I'm screamin' for more." The name was guitartist Jim Ward's suggestion shortly after the band former in 1993.

Formed in South Africa in 1999 as Saron Gas, the band ditched the name as their US label Wind-up Records noted its similarity to the toxic synthetic organophosphorus compound, sarin gas. Ultimately they settled on Seether after the 1994 Veruca Salt single 'Seether'.

The Sisters of Mercy

When they formed 40 years ago in Leeds, the gothic rockers took their name from the Leonard Cohen track 'Sisters of Mercy' from his seminal 1967 album 'Songs of Leonard Cohen.' The Sisters of Mercy took inspiration from Robert Altman's 1971 movie McCabe & Mrs Miller thats' soundtracked by three Leonard Cohen songs.

Stiff Little Fingers

Previously called Highway Star and The Fast, the Belfast punks eventually decided to call themselves Stiff Little Fingers after the 1977 Vibrators song of the same name.

Wisely abandoning the prospective band name Virgin Killer (a nod to the Scorpions), New Jersey thrash metallers Overkill ultimately honoured their other musical heroes Motörhead by naming themselves after the trio's 1979 album 'Overkill' and the single of the same name.

Panic! at the Disco

Although many people erroneously think that Panic! at the Disco are named after The Smiths' song 'Panic' and its chorus of "burn down the disco", former band leader Brendon Urie has said in multiple interviews that they take their name from a track also called 'Panic' by Californian emo band Name Taken. The song's lyrics read: "Panic at the disco/Sat back and took it so slow/Are you nervous?/Are you shaking?".

Deep Purple Announce Short UK Tour in 2024

E nglish hard-rockers Deep Purple embarked on the hefty Whoosh! Tour just last year, and the band isn’t done touring yet. They’ll be kicking off an international tour later this year through Europe, and a few tour dates in the United Kingdom have just been announced! The UK tour dates will include London, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, and Glasgow. Reef will be supporting the band for the UK leg of the tour. This is going to be a brief tour, but the band members can still put on an incredible show.

The Deep Purple 2024 Tour through the UK will kick off on November 4 in Birmingham, England at Resorts World Arena. The five-date tour will end on November 10 in Glasgow, Scotland at OVO Hydro.

There are a few options for Deep Purple fans who want to get tickets to the UK shows. As always, we recommend using Viagogo for any non-US concerts. Alternatively, Ticketmaster is going to be your best bet for presale tickets, and it looks like a few different presale events will be launching on March 20 and March 21 at 10:00 am local.
