Lagunitas TapRoom & Beer Sanctuary Reopens April 13th

The Lagunitas Brewing Company is reopening its Chicago TapRoom & Beer Sanctuary within the 300,000-square-foot brewery in Douglas Park on April 13.

“We’ve missed our Windy City friends and family, who have been waiting and asking for this day to come. All I can say is thank you for your patience and welcome back,” said Paige Guzman,  Lagunitas’ Chief Marketing Officer. “Reopening the TapRoom was no easy feat, but it was a labor of love. I’m proud of our incredible team who worked tirelessly to make this happen and reopen our doors to our fans once again.”

Upon entering the purple building doors, travel through what can only be described as a Willy Wonka-esque corridor lit by a celestial mural and a dancing laser light. Wander into the tasting room, known as The Basement, to sample fresh brews or play an oversized Jenga game and drum set. Stroll up to the main TapRoom surrounded by glass to catch live jams on stage, tune into a game, take a brewery tour or venture out onto the network of catwalks 26 feet above the brewery for a bird's eye view of beer production.

The TapRoom’s 32 draft lines include the year-round Lagunitas IPA and Little Sumpin' Sumpin', non-alcoholic options like Hoppy Refresher and IPNA, and a rotation of seasonals and one-off tap-only brews. The menu also features pub grub and munchies. The Hogunitas Sandwich and Beer Mussels will be back on the menu, as well as many new Latin-inspired dishes that pair with Lagunitas’ beers.

“Our doors are open to all kinds and creeds; punk rockers, misfits, ivy leaguers, weirdos, Waldos, Sparkle Ponies, and everything in between. Come as you are. We always have a spot for you at our bar,” said Lagunitas’ Brewmonster Jeremy Marshall.

The TapRoom & Beer Sanctuary is located at 2607 W. 17th St. It is open Thursday 4-9 p.m., Friday 4-10 p.m., Saturday 11:30 a.m. – 10 p.m., and Sunday 11:30 a.m.– 9 p.m.

After a delay, lagunitas sets new target date to reopen brewery taproom.

Lagunitas Chicago

Lagunitas Brewing is reopening its Douglass Park factory taproom on April 13 — a few months after its original plan to reopen in late 2022.

The Petaluma, Calif.-based beer maker shuttered the in-house bar, situated above its brewery floor, amid the COVID pandemic. Lagunitas told Crain's early last year it was eyeing  late 2022  to reopen the taproom, and then pushed the target back to 2023. The company closed its Seattle taproom permanently around that time and needed to focus on that, Chief Marketing Officer Paige Guzman said in December.

The Seattle location opened in 2017 and was Lagunitas' only taproom outside of Chicago and Petaluma, where it also brews its beer. The Chicago brewery makes products for Lagunitas' customers east of the Mississippi River; the taproom has remained closed during the pandemic to protect brewery workers. The Seattle taproom only produced beers that were sold at its own bar.

The Chicago taproom, which opened in 2014, offers 32 Lagunitas draft lines.

“We’ve missed our Windy City friends and family, who have been waiting and asking for this day to come," Guzman said today. "All I can say is, thank you for your patience and welcome back."

Lagunitas brewery tour

What a great brewery tour!  Very friendly staff explain and distribute the samples in the tastings room which is laid out with comfortable chairs and games including large scale Jenga, foosball and a great old pinball machine.  The tour itself was similarly relaxed and informative as we wandered along a catwalk above the huge brewing and processing plant.  There's is a gift shop and a full bar/restaurant at the end of the tour.  A great visit and we will definitely be back the next time we have guests in town!

This is a good tour for aficionados of micro brewery beer. A brewer delivers an explanation of the history of beer, the brewing process and the Goose Island facility. There is then a tasting of 6 of their beers only available in the brewpub. We attended the tour at the Clybourn pub at a cost of $10 per person (which also includes a souvenir pint glass). While a reasonable price because of the souvenir, I did expect larger samples similar to those in other tours like that of the Sam Adams brewery. The guide was knowledgable and pleasant although she delivered the talk at such a incredible speed it was actually hard to hear / follow. Still, it is a good tour and a nice place to sit afterwards and quaff a few of the beers you enjoyed most from the tour.

We took the Living Social Beer Tour today through Living Social. We met at Atlas Brewery on Lincoln on the north side.We were provided with a pizza and salad lunch and 4 beer tastings. We did not have a choice on the beers we tasted. The food was good, but not exceptional. After eating we boarded the trolley and traveled to Finch Brewery for a tour and a beer. The facility was very small. The guide was personable and did a good job explaining the beer making process. The advertisement stated we would receive a "Living Social" glass at this site. In actuality, it was just a plain glass with no markings at all. The trolley then took us to Wicker Park to Moonshine for 6 more tastings. AT Moonshine there were plates and silverware on our tables but we were not given an opportunity to order any food. The vibe was nice and the beer samples were interesting but at this point in the day some food would have been appreciated. The cost for the tour was $55. per person and it lasted from 1 pm to 4:30. The trolley tour was enjoyable as it took us through many lovely Chicago neighborhoods.

Lagunitas to Reopen Chicago Brewpub After Three-Year Slumber

The North Lawndale brewery will once again serve food and pour from 32 taps

A taproom’s bar at night.

Three years after closing its brewpub, Lagunitas Brewing is reopening on April 13 to the general public in North Lawndale, near Douglass Park.

The closure was a part of a glut of shutters as restaurants coped with their health, government mitigation measures, and dwindling consumer confidence during a pandemic without a COVID vaccine. Some places announced temporary closures but never returned. In the case of Three Floyds’ brewpub in Munster, Indiana, the brewery shifted strategies to permanently close. Though, in happier news, the Dark Lord Day music and beer festival is returning to the grounds in May for the first time since 2020.

For breweries, running a restaurant added to the pressure. Retail sales increased with on-premise consumption suspended through parts of the pandemic. That kept breweries busy even though they had to sort through separate COVID regulations that applied to places that made food or beverage. In that world, beer makers were considered “essential workers.”

Before closing in March 2020, Lagunitas had built up a following in the Midwest with beers like A Lil Sumpin’ Sumpin’ and Willettized. Founded in Lagunitas, California in 1993, it opened its Chicago brewery in 2014 near Douglass Park. Its independent vibe proved popular with drinkers and big breweries noticed. In September 2015, the multinational company that owns Heineken purchased a 50-percent stake in Lagunitas. Two years later, Heineken’s parent purchased the remaining 50 percent

The brewery also ran a Seattle taproom that is permanently closed. A spokesperson told Crain’s back in December that labor conditions made it hard to reopen in Chicago. They wanted to reopen in winter 2022.

The brewpub will reactivate its 32 taps on April 13 and the kitchen will once more serve up sandwiches, mussels, and more. Chicago’s beer scene has changed a lot since 2014. A lot has changed since 2020. For example, breweries are offering non-alcoholic options. Lagunitas sells sparkling hop water. Chicago has even added an extra “S” to Douglass Park to distance itself from the original honoree who was a slaveholder. More directly impacting the brewery, there remain concerns about permanent financial damage from the pandemic. There’s the worry that taprooms aren’t keeping as busy. Guinness is ignored that doom and gloom and are scheduled to open its Chicago taproom this summer in Fulton Market .

But there’s also renewed interest in the area as restaurants such as Soule move into the area. Riding that momentum, Lagunitas’ fans could return to the Chicago TapRoom & Beer Sanctuary on April 13. They’ll be open Thursday through Sunday, according to a news release.

Lagunitas Chicago TapRoom & Beer Sanctuary, 2607 W. 17th Street, planned for a Thursday, April 13 reopening.

Lagunitas Tour

Welcome to the newest edition of Tim’s Blog.  As we transition from our 6 months of winter into our one month of spring, I have realized it is really nice to drive home from work before the sun sets.  More likely than not, our month of spring will be sprinkled in a day or two at a time in between 5 days of cold, blustery rain, or even worse, snow showers.  What would a Brewer’s Opening Day game be without snowflakes?  We can thank George Petak for getting us Miller Park, where it doesn’t matter what the weather is.  If the name doesn’t ring a bell, Google him.  The Brewers may have disappointed us on Opening Day, but the NCAA Championship Game did not.  Villanova and North Carolina put on a great display of what the Big Dance is all about, tough defense, great coaching, clutch shooting and all concluding with a basket at the buzzer to win the championship.  Congrats to the Wildcats!  I can hear some of you asking yourselves, “Is this a weather/sports blog, or what?”  Sorry, I’m easily distracted.  Ask any of my co-workers.  By the way, Carrie Underwood should have gotten “Best Female Performer” at the ACM Awards in Las Vegas.  Miranda Lambert?  Really?  (I told you that I was easily distracted)

We were all properly primed for the tour.  Our guide was a young man known as “Mad Dog Miles”, an energetic guy with a gravelly voice and passion for Lagunitas.  He delivered his rhetoric with wit and humor, like a finely tuned comedian.  As we opened the door into the enormous 300,000 square feet facility, the first thing we see is their stockpile of beer being aged in 100’s of whiskey barrels from the Willet and High West Distilleries.  They will age to perfection until they reach a happy ABV around 12% before being kegged or bottled.  I hope to get my hands on some of these when they are released.

Otto’s Wine and Spirits is featuring Lagunitas for the entire month of April with a great price on 6 packs.  Stop in and see us and pick up some of these great beers.  And don’t forget to get all of your tailgating beverages while you are there, too!  See you soon.  Go Brewers!

The stories are true...mostly.

Hang on to your beers… we’re going on an adventure through our flagship brewery! Come discover all-things-Lagunitas including our history from a kitchen stove to our Undercover Shut Down. Check out the brewing process, sample our hop-forward beers and other unique brews, and have some fun along the way. Thankyouverymuch for coming along!
